References to Italian culture in the film Pixar’s Luca

One of the most anticipated animated films of this year is Luca from Pixar Studios. Not only because Pixar is well known for making good animated films, but for the story, themes and the references to Italia the film has.

In this post I’m going to talk about how Luca potrays Italian culture and its customs. This is going to be based of what has been shown in the trailers (Trailer 1 and Trailer 2). If there are any references I missed, add it on the comments section or reblog this post.

Credits to @healingn0tes for explaining me things she picked up from the trailers. She herself is Italian and we have talked a few times about Luca before. She offered to help me with writing this article by showing me some aspects from Italian culture and architecture. Most of my points are based of what she told me. So, Thanks again for your big contribution.

Let´s start:

The song from the second trailer is ¨il gatto e la volpe¨ (The cat and the fox) from Edoardo Bennato. He is a very popular Italian singer known for writing songs based on old folklore and stories. Some of his songs have lyrics that are supposed to be ironic and satire, often addressed at the establishment and those self-proclaimed as "the good".

The town were the film takes place seems to be based of Ligurian towns near the sea. The fictional town, Portorosso, appears to be a mix between Portofino or Portovenere and Monterosso. The director of the film, Enrico Casarosa,is Italian and from Genoa, Liguria.  Liguria is a region of north-western Italy and is bordered by the sea, the Alps and the Apennine Mountains.

¨The architecture and the in between building streets is typical of Genoa and Ligurian cities. They're called "Caruggi" in Genoan dialect. Old buildings were built close to each other because people could escape from a window to another using wooden planks in case they were attacked from the sea.¨ (Thanks Healingn0tes again for telling me about this)

Portorosso is a reference to the Studio Ghibli animated film Porco Rosso. In this film the protagonist is Italian. 

The protagonists of the film appear to be based of a mythological sea creature called the Cola Pesce ( Peix Nicolau). They are like mermaids, half man-half fish. There is a legend about a kid that gets cursed by his mother and is forced  to live in the water like a fish. 

The cat in the trailer is based of a real life cat, Seppia, that was adopted by local fishermen and lives in Boccadasse, Genoa.

The old men in Trailer 1 are playing a card game called Scopa (Broom), which is very popular in Italy. There is also a Spanish variation of the game called Escoba (Broom) that often played in South American countries.

There are traditional ice cream shops and during summer tables are put outside for the people to sit in.

According to the director the film is rooted in the 50´s or 60´s.

Neue Probleme mit Luca App

"Wollen Sie der Quelle der Datei vertrauen?"

📷 Und wieder hat es die Luca App erwischt - durch eine neu entdeckte Sicherheitslücke in der dieser App könnten Verschlüsselungstrojaner in die Gesundheitsämter transpotiert werden. "Glücklicherweise" gibt es bei den meisten Gesundheitsämtern nur lokale Datenbestände, so dass es nicht zum Super-Gau der (nicht-existierenden) deutschen Corona-Datenbank kommen kann.

Durch die oder besser eine der Sicherheitslücke/n beim Check-In können nicht nur die persönlichen Daten ausspioniert werden, damit könnten dann ganze Gesundheitsämter lahmgelegt werden. "Aktivieren Sie diese Inhalte nur, wenn Sie der Quelle der Datei vertrauen" – das könnte das Letzte sein, was ein Gesundheitsamtsmitarbeiter sieht, bevor all seine Dateien verschlüsselt werden, schreibt die Zeit.

Diese Warnung gibt Excel immmer dann aus, wenn die automatische Prüfung in der Microsoft-Software Auffälligkeiten erkennt. Und die Luca App soll ja angeblich eine Quelle sein, der man vertrauen kann.

Ein "Glück" wäre es dann, wenn die Verschlüsselung nur diesen PC mit der Excel-Datei trifft. Ist das Gerät bereits Teil der Software Sormas X, die z.Zt. (also 1,5 Jahre nach Corona) in den Ämtern implementiert wird, dann sind die Ämter untereinander vernetzt. Welche Teile dann von dem Angriff betroffen sein können, wäre eine spannende Frage ...

Gibt es keinen Schutz, warum ist so ein Angriff nicht abzuwehren? Was in Excel passiert ist eine "CSV-Injection". Excel interpretiert Textinformationen, die mit einem "=" beginnen als Formeln und versucht sie auzuführen, bestenfalls nach der oben beschriebenen Warnung - und schon ist es passiert.

Immer wieder die Luca App?

Wir hatten schon vor Wochen über eine Lücke berichtet und auch der Regensburger IT-Experte Markus Feilner hat sich kürzlich mit einem Offenen Brief an Stadtspitze und Stadtrat gewandt und vor gravierende Sicherheitsmängeln bei Schlüsselanhängern gewarnt. Schlüsselanhänger zur Luca-App in fünfstelliger Anzahl für Menschen, die keine Handys mögen oder keine besitzen haben Städte quer durch die Republik gekauft. Wie Regensburg-Digital berichtet, ist aber völlig unklar, ob diese Schlüsselanhänger jemals funktioniert haben. Der Sprecher der AG KRITIS, eine Arbeitsgruppe von Experten, die sich mit dem Schutz kritischer Infrastrukturen beschäftigt, spricht angesichts der Probleme mit den Schlüsselanhängern von „defekt by design“. 13 von 16 Bundesländer kauften die Lizenzen der Luca App. Die Einnahmen aus Steuergeld für die Firma Nexenio beträgt bisher (Anfang Mai) rund 25 Millionen Euro.
