Why I volunteer
Tumblr media
Rhodri Jones is Head of Membership Services and Digital Participation at WCVA. His job is extremely varied from developing the membership offer to technical management of the website to managing the customer database to providing information and advice on a variety of topics through his governance work. Here he describes what volunteering he does and why he does it.
Community First Responder
First Responders units are volunteers who live and work in the local community. They attend emergency calls received by the ambulance service and provide care until the ambulance arrives. The aim is not to replace the ambulance service, but to ensure that in circumstances such as cardiac arrests that defibrillation and other time-critical life-saving techniques can occur as soon as possible, maximising the chance of the casualty’s survival.
I respond from home in Aberaeron and from work whilst in Aberystwyth and have attended hundreds of incidents over the last 10 years and saving lives in the process. I’ll never forget one person whose life I saved tracking me down and phoning me up and saying “It’s thanks to you that I’m here today and according to the Hospital staff the initial treatment you gave undoubtedly saved me”.
Trustee Aberaeron Memorial Hall
Built after the First World War and for the use of the inhabitants of Aberaeron the current trustees have turned the hall from a sad looking unloved hall into a vibrant, well-heated community venue that is used regularly. As a trustee, my main responsibilities are as chair of the buildings sub-committee and through this work; we have invested heavily in insulation, new windows, new heating system, new kitchen and refurbished toilets. Additionally my vast knowledge of policies and procedures is always put to good use. On a personal note, the hall will always have a place in my heart as my wedding reception was held there in 2003!
Tumblr media
Secretary Aberaeron Town Improvements Committee
This organisation is responsible amongst other things for organising the annual Aberaeron carnival. As the previous Chairman/Vice- Chairman and the current Secretary I have been instrumental in developing safety and traffic management plans for the various events. These events are always hard work both at the planning and delivery stages but when thousands of people turn up the buzz is amazing, and the positive feedback makes it all worthwhile. We have an exciting Fundraising project soon to be announced for the town so watch this space!
Tumblr media
Director Cardigan Bay Seafood Festival
This not for profit festival was established by a group of local fishermen in 1997 to show what fish was available locally and how it can be prepared. It aimed at demystifying fish and shellfish and increasing demand of such a local product that was increasingly rarely sampled in the homes of local people. At the annual festival visitors get a chance to watch chefs prepare local fish and sample dishes that they can then attempt at home. Local lobster, crab, mackerel, mullet, seabass and much more, are cooked in all different styles. As one of the three directors, my responsibilities focus on the infrastructure, finances, logistics and safety for the event including 50 plus volunteers. Although the event only lasts a day it takes a whole year of planning!!
In summary, my volunteering is about giving something back to my community where I work and live and I hope that this insight will spur others into volunteering.

Why I #lovevolunteering
Tumblr media
Fiona Liddell is Volunteering Development Manager at WCVA. Her job is focused around the promotion and support of volunteering in Wales. She describes here what volunteering means to her in a personal capacity.
Our job, and our family circumstances each give us particular vantage points from which to see ‘our world’. One reason why I #lovevolunteering is that it gives me opportunities to get involved in different aspects of my community and to see and experience things from a different vantage point.
Let me give you a couple of glimpses of where my volunteering takes me.
Volunteer Usher
Tumblr media
As a volunteer at the Sherman Theatre in Cardiff I steward for performances in the main and studio theatres. Volunteers are there to ‘look after’ the audience, helping people to find their seats, sorting out queries or difficulties and, hopefully, adding to their visit with a friendly, welcoming smile.
Being prepared for all eventualities is important, so regular training is given in evacuation procedures and on how to deal with tricky situations. What do you do if someone turns up with tickets for the wrong night? Or if an audience member’s behaviour is visibly annoying others?
Briefing before each session clarifies details such as whether late comers are allowed entry, drinks allowed or whether there are any special effects or hazards to be aware of. There may be musical instruments or props to ‘guard’ during the interval from prying hands.
Tumblr media
At a recent volunteer training session most people said that the best thing about volunteering was the chance to see the shows, including many that they would not otherwise have booked to see. I would agree with that. (And I have certainly seen some shows I would not have booked to see!) I might add that helping others, in a small way, to see and enjoy good theatre brings its rewards too.
The recent production of The Emperor’s New Clothes was aimed at the under fives. There were pushchairs to park and parents to reassure that restless or fidgety children were not a problem. The show was delightful, but it was an equal delight to see (and hear) such little people enraptured by the magic of the drama. For many of them, so their parents told me, it was an entirely new experience.
Conversation sessions with Asylum Seekers and Refugees
Tumblr media
For an hour or so each week the Trinity Centre, Cardiff is a buzz with the conversations of about 100-200 asylum seekers and refugees and about 50 volunteers. Sessions are organised by Cardiff Student Action for Refugees (STAR). They prepare handouts to prompt conversation around such topics as health services, the natural environment and free time and hobbies. Not being a student, I am there under the auspices of Space 4 U, which provides a welcome space for asylum seekers and refugees and coordinates a programme of weekly activities at the Trinity Centre, of which this is one.
These are not formal lessons (which happen at other times in the week, with qualified tutors), and conversations can go in many directions. In recent weeks we have shared information about our ‘good habits’ and ‘bad habits’ (not to be reported here, sorry!) and exchanged heated views on Brexit.
Asking about someone’s personal history is ‘out of bounds’, due to the painful nature of many people’s histories, but sometimes these unfold naturally. I will never forget one young man’s story of his tortuous journey from Eritrea to the UK, including a suffocating boat ride across the Mediterranean. Or how another became homeless when he was granted ‘leave to remain’ in the UK and the allowance and housing he received as an asylum seeker instantly stopped, leaving him destitute.
These conversations and the insights that come from them often leave me feeling humbled. They often leave me angry, too, at what people have to suffer.
Volunteering is fun?
Volunteering may not always be ‘fun’ but it enriches our vision and experience and makes us more ‘rounded’ as human beings. It can take us to places we would otherwise not go, and to meet people we would otherwise not meet. Hopefully it makes a positive difference not only to us, but to others too!
#lovevolunteering
To launch our recent Youth Volunteering and Branding Consultation report and share some of our findings we will be running a #lovevolunteering (#carugwirfoddoli) campaign this Valentine’s Day, Tuesday 14th February.
We’ll be sharing reasons why people love volunteering, using survey results and quotes from our partners hoping to inspire as many people as possible to volunteer! Get involved on Twitter and Facebook @GwirVol and don’t forget to use our hashtags #lovevolunteering and #carugwirfoddoli’.

How Volunteering Abroad Program Can Enrich Your Life
When you are looking for the reasons why you should volunteer, it is not only about helping those who are less fortunate but also playing vital role in improving the lives of community with your efforts. Being a volunteer, we offer our time and services for the noble cause without expecting anything in return. But the reality is that volunteering will bring a number of benefits and rewards that you have never expected. This is what makes volunteering an important opportunity for your own life.
The benefits of volunteering are well documented in the form of positive impacts on the affected community with your individual participation. This is the reason why most of the schools and colleges make volunteering a compulsory requirement for their students.
Assist Those Who Are Less Fortune and Need Help
Unfortunately, everyone is not born with all the opportunities and facilities, sometimes the region where you grow up will have a life of poverty and hardship for you. There are countries where people are struggling for basic things like housing, education, and safety and health care facilities. On the other hand, we are having good life, finish our high School education and obtain our college degree for a bright future filled with good possibilities. But, all these things are just a dream for many people.
Volunteering is just a small step to improve the lives of those who really need your help to improve their future and life. By participating in volunteering abroad programs, you can help those people and experience the reality of lives, new culture, beliefs and contribute your efforts in making their lives better. You can look for non-profitable organization like Love Volunteers that provide different volunteering abroad programs like women empowerment, wildlife conservation, education, healthcare and many more in various developing countries around the world.
Volunteer to Enrich Your Life
Volunteering will play a vital role in enriching your life in different ways, though that may not be your primary intention. Working on volunteering abroad programs, you will come face to face with the problems encountered daily by the disadvantaged communities, and understand how to deal with them while adjusting the life outside your comfort zone. This will help in enhancing your various skills like teamwork, leadership, problem-solving and management skills.
Moreover, volunteering provides you an opportunity to travel abroad and experience different cultures, assist local community or environment project while travelling the world at the same time. Ultimately, volunteering abroad programs will prove beneficial in boosting your self-confidence and allowing you to deal with real- world problems that you can’t experience in your job or college time.
If you are also interested in volunteering for any aboard program then you can approach a trusted organization Love Volunteers. At Love Volunteers they give you plenty of volunteering abroad programs from which you can choose the one according to your talent, skills and preferences.
