🍑 —If you could make a connection between your favorite character and another work you care about (whether a crossover/fusion or a wonderfully “pretentious” literary reference) what would it be? How would it work?

Hmmm this is a tough one because I honestly don’t do/think of crossovers very much? I rly like working within a piece n finding things to expand on inside it. I may unfortunately have to go w the boring answer of I probably wouldn’t JNDBDBD It’s not like I don’t read stuff either but I’m not exactly a literature man in my passions as reading takes a lot of brain power, so idrk any quotes or overarching things id try to tie in? This is honestly kinda interesting to me on its own that I just. Don’t have anything. But ig that’s just how it is fhdhdjbd I’m not rly a crossover or references dude I suppose.

Maybe something with Miguel/2099 stuff and Terry from Batman Beyond? Somth ab future versions of characters n legacies n Terry’s thing of helping an older roughened guy care ab ppl again, and the fact that he had spiderman inspo in his making, idk. But that’s more just a musing more than anything serious.

I have many n don’t have one (I have a super hard time with single favorite characters) so I will not be giving all of them n just give some rapid fire thoughts from across the board.

I love trans Miguel O’Hara and Gwen Stacy esp from the spiderverse movies as I think those readings of them are a very thematically appropriate and fascinating way to explore them, and I love trans people

Comics Steven from MK paints the body’s nails and gets them regular manicures/pedicures/hair care treatments, etc n has an extensive collection of Bath and Bodyworks soaps and scrubs and lotions. They also have semi-sensitive skin and he’s very aware of ingredients and what will work for them

Hera w359 is aLso such a trans woman to me there is so much ab the self and holding it and creating it and breaking from the miles people tell you to stay in and finding the humanity in yourself and creating a new sense of self outside of programming and the literal voice someone forced you to have. I love her so dearly and aUGGH

Show!Steven from MK has a record player and is very careful about taking them out of the sleeves, but not careful about how they end up stacked up. Jake does CDs. Marc downloads random tracks onto their phone or only listens via YouTube (not YouTube music just looking up on YouTube)

🫐—What’s your favorite underrated thing in your fandom? (A ship that only you seem to write for, a character there’s almost no fics about, a trope that criminally hasn’t been written yet, etc.)

Well this isn’t rly underrated bc stuffs still kicking off but if someone hasn’t already, a timeloop fic for ATSV Miguel would slap absolute ass. I’m also on the (sort of but also not always?) rare train of genderqueer jake, and ofc the very rare train of some-flavor-of-transfem Marc. Also love non binding and non top op trans men/mascs and would lOve to see that around more. I’m also someone who does a lot of inhuman body exploration which while not uncommon in the big scheme I find a way to work into a lot of my headcanons for characters at some point and can be a huge draw (like to Ted n Jack from wwbn, the MK sys with weird Khonshu body effects and differing levels of human connection, or Miguel w his many mutations n differing levels of spider ppl connection).

20 Questions for fic writers

@cchapsticck tagged me and given we should have an update on CWSTAU by the end of this month, figured I should post.

1. How many works do you have on AO3?

4 - Most of my work isn't published. I've written a lot but just...not put it out there. I've always been a chicken. However one I archived/deleted and the other is on an account I don't associate with this one, and is on long term hiatus. The other is on someone else's account that will be explained below and just, /gestures.

2. What’s your total AO3 word count?

18,760 (published) but to give ya'll some idea of how much of Conventional Weapons is sitting waiting to be edited/refined, I have 14k sitting in gdocs

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Stranger Things, Danger Days. This is a labor of love towards both fandoms, and when the main CW is done, I have pieces that are going expand with both the characters of ST and DD. Any other non-DD things will go on my other account (not associated here).

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

adlfkja only got the one baby. But I'm so thankful for each and every one of those kudos.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I do! It may not always be coherent or the best comment, but I try to give people some sort of response as they've gone that extra mile to provide me a comment. Every kudo, every comment means so much to me. Seriously, I wrote this expecting an audience of like, 2 people, and knowing so many more are enjoying it means the world to me.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

There is a timeloop fic that remains in the drafts that has a horrible ending, but I don't know if it will ever be published. As of right now, no angst endings here. Complicated, messy, but not angst ridden, really.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

The ending of Conventional Weapons is already written--its been written for a long time (before the middle parts were even written) and I don't know if it's the happiest ending, but it's the most hopeful.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Nah, I'm too niche for that lol.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Smut with emotion? IDK. There are plans for smut in CW but I think they are going to be 'missing scenes' published after the fact that people can read/not read at their leisure. I enjoy writing it, but it isn't really what this story is about, and I honestly don't feel that it works with the main body of this story. Hence, the "click here to read the sex" aspect of what is going to happen. The 'sequel' things may be more explicit, as they aren't the direct story.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

Gestures to what this entire blog/project is about.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Nah.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Nope!

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

While not a traditional co-written piece, @cchapsticck has provided insight that has really helped me move this along, and the key mantra in the fic itself is from them. Their art has also really been important as well. They sell themselves short on their additions, really. Their help, esp early on, in helping me shape the world, means that this fic is what it is now.

14. What’s your all time favorite ship?

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Look, the story that's on hiatus may never be finished. And hey, that's okay. I have a few that I've got outlines for, that may never get past that. I'm a slow writer, I always have been. I really dont want to let anything else get rolling until CW is done anyways.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Look I'm going to be honest, I have no fucking idea. I will say I think I'm pretty good at characterization, and I usually feel confident in my choices for the character--in a 'yes they would do this given the situation' and a 'yes they would say that'. Given it's an AU I get more wiggle room, but I feel really strongly about Steve and Eddie's characterization, and I know that not everyone feels the same way I do regarding them--but I'm confident in my character choices in the story. [This goes for my other stories as well but--]

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

I hate writing action. I suck at it, and I try to avoid it, despite evidence to the contrary. Trying to keep track of all the balls in the air is just annoying as hell. Also despite this fic having a real overarching plot, I have really wanted to keep it 'vibes' based more than plot, cause things get to plot heavy and I start to worry I'm a bore. It's where my insecurities start to sneak in, which lets my writing to become a lot weaker in turn.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

Note: all my statements are assuming you aren't fluent in the language you are trying to write in, and you're a native English speaker. Maybe a word or two is okay? But unless you're fluent, you're gonna make it sound weird. If a character is speaking in German, just say they are speaking in German. Unless it is absoLUTELY important to the narrative that the phrase be in a foreign language, in the fic--do the work to make sure it's correct. Get a native speaker to check it, put in the translation somewhere. But again, ask yourself once, twice, three times if it's necessary.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

I didn't consider it fanfic at the time but I absolutely wrote a 'fix it' chapter for the end of The Great Gatsby for class once lol. That was the beginning.

20. Favorite fic you’ve written?

This one. Again, I know it's niche, but CW is such a labor of love, and means so much to me. It's not perfect, I'm slow going because of school and work, but I've never felt so secure in my own work and felt such joy when I'm working on it.

Ymir’s Role in SnK: Not Over Yet?

Fandom has been pretty up in arms since we learned of Ymir’s death. Understandable. Here we have another Dead Lesbian on our hands, and worse, she was killed off-screen, probably well before Reiner delivered her letter to the Survey Corps, and all we get is one little image of her.

Also, her motivations have been difficult to pinpoint for the fandom. Was it that she felt sorry for Reiner and Bertolt? That she felt a connection to them (because she was one of them/a mainland Eldian)? That she felt guilty for eating Marcel? That she really felt this could save Historia?

In the second guidebook there is a little information on Ymir’s true motivations for doing this, as translated by @tsuki-no-ura. You can read it here on their blog.

Afraid that Marley’s hand will extend towards Historia, she decides to work together with Reiner’s group.

It both does and doesn’t make sense. Ymir wasn’t “playing” soldier--it was her life, or what she had left of it, anyway.

So why hand herself over to the enemy? How will that help Historia--help Paradis? And while I’m at it, how much information does Ymir have on the state of things in Marley at this point, anyway? She can’t know much; she was a mindless titan for 60 years! And before that, she was a brainwashed child. It seems pretty foolish to hand herself over to Bertolt and Reiner when she doesn’t even have half of the complete picture.

So why go to Marley? Why hand herself over to the enemy? Why give them another weapon with which to smash Paradis, and also Historia, into the ground?

This is about to get really long and very image-heavy, so buckle up for the long ride, friends.

I don’t doubt for a second that Ymir went with Bertolt and Reiner to save them and to save Historia, but it’ll take some finagling to get an understanding of it.

Let’s look really quickly at Ymir’s letter.

And then...

Later she takes that “no regrets” statement back and says her one regret is not being married to Historia, but we know she was being watched and was probably not capable of saying everything she wanted to. Still, I think we can take her words at face value, though; in the end she was able to make her own choices.

And for the record, I don’t think she hoped Marley would somehow miraculously leave Historia alone--I think she only expected to buy a little extra time.

Consider the fact that Marley would come after her and the Jaw Titan eventually anyway, that it was thanks to Reiner and Bertolt that she was given a shot at a life that had love in it. If they hadn’t broken down the wall, she would have died outside having never met Historia. She definitely wasn’t grateful for the death and destruction, but eating Marcel gave her her humanity back, and the hole in the wall let her be a regular person for just a little while.

Ymir was never going to have a long life; she knew that. So she used what little she had left of it to repay Reiner and Bertolt and to buy some time for Historia.

The canon all but confirms it back in the 11th volume. When Eren asks who the enemy is, Reiner interrupts Ymir’s answer with, “Ymir!”

At the time this seemed silly and defeatist, but with our current set of knowledge, this actually makes a lot of sense. Marley was always intending to get the Founding Titan and wipe Eldians away like an inconveniently spilled soda. Like I said, sentiments toward Paradis have probably been pretty...steadily terrible, so her world of sixty years ago isn’t much different. The inevitable is coming. I don’t think Reiner is lying. He tells her that they can’t guarantee her safety at all, and in the end that does turn out to be true. But he says if it’s just Krista, maybe there’s a possibility. The End is Nigh, et cetera and so on.

Speaking of Historia, their offer to help Ymir isn’t selfless. Obviously.

What’s really interesting here is that Reiner, Bertolt, and Annie know that Historia is important, but...they don’t know how that is. They just think she may have access to information.

But speaking of Historia, I’ll be the first to admit that what confuses me the most about her right now is that it’s hard to say for sure who exactly knows she’s part of the royal family. Ymir knew, but she’s dead now. I don’t think it’s possible that Reiner figured out the truth.

Marley knows the king was overthrown, but either Marley is conveniently leaving out crucial information or they don’t actually know the circumstances of this uprising. Both are pretty equally possible. You’d think them knowing exactly who was in charge in Paradis would be important, especially considering that she is the very last of the royal Fritz line (minus Zeke, but we know they don’t know that about Zeke).

The Tybur family supposedly has kept tabs on the goings-on in Paradis--though how, I’ve no idea.

Is it possible the royal line doesn’t matter anymore because they no longer carry the founding titan?

That would make sense. Willy says that someone rose up against King Fritz and stole the Founding Titan.

Then we get this line from Willy’s speech:

So Reiner is the one who told Marley that Eren could activate the founding titan power.

We know that in order to utilize the founding titan power, you have to be part of the royal bloodline; the problem with Eren stealing it is “The Vow Renouncing War.”

In other words, Eren is terrifying because he’s not caught by intrusive thoughts of laying down and dying...because he’s not of the royal family. We also know that the only reason he was able to use the founding titan’s power was pure coincidence.

I know this feels like it’s veering way off course, but trust me, I think it could matter. Let’s continue with Eren. After he has this realization, he stands up, freaked out.

And apologizes twice for interrupting the meeting.

Hange’s expression here is so suspicious I wouldn’t be surprised if she was covering for Eren immediately afterward with the “he’s dealing with a stage of life” excuse.

Eren contemplates this further.

I like this scene a lot because it gives us a glimpse at the kind of man Eren will soon become: he’s starting to think things through and he doesn’t blindly trust anyone, not even Mikasa and Eren. At least, he doesn’t trust his half-baked ideas enough to share them, and he also wishes to protect Historia.

The problem here, too, is that if Eren consumes a mindless Historia titan, he may not actually be immune to the will of the 145th King Fritz--the idea being that if he can use the power there’s enough royal blood in him that it should enact the passivity that affected the others who held the Founding Titan before him--most recently Freida Reiss.

So all right, Eren from four years ago has a half-baked idea of what might enable him to use the founding titan’s power. He also knows what let him use it last time: contact with Dina. He knows he has that same power if he works with Historia. And now that he knows who Zeke is, he will have that same power if he works together with Zeke.

Meanwhile, Reiner saw Eren activate the power, thinks he has full control over it, and reported it to his superiors.

So Marley thinks Eren is capable of destroying the world.

He’s probably not--not alone, anyway--but they don’t know that.

Falco does’t understand everything, but he does know that what Marley wants is literally sitting right in front of him. Yikes.

Now, look. We’ve speculated about Eren’s motives a lot. Maybe he’s working with Zeke for some specific reason. And hey, the canon gives us something else interesting, too.

The very nature of the Attack Titan is that no matter what happens, it keeps moving forward toward freedom. Kruger thinks these are memories coming to him, but since the Attack Titan is all about heading into the future, and the first “episode” is called “To You, 2000 Years from Now” what might be interesting is the idea that the Attack Titan holder actually possesses some minor knack for Future Sight.

In which case...maybe by now Eren has seen something that we’ve not been privy to.

Or maybe they really are in a timeloop and my crack ending theory will end up correct. Future Sight makes a little more sense. ;)

Let’s go back to Historia for a second.

Eren of four years ago didn’t feel comfortable telling anyone about his idea. In the narrative it’s brought up in the military meeting and at the award ceremony. He doesn’t want to do anything to hurt Historia. She is his friend. A trusted companion.

And returning to the military meeting Eren interrupted...

When Hange talks about who the enemy is, Eren remembers Ymir...who knew the enemy was the world. Remember Reiner’s words: “Do you think this world has a future?”

So here we have a lot of crossed wires, but the most interesting by far is that Marley believes Eren has the Founding Titan and is capable of using its power. The reality is that he needs Historia to do anything with it. And if Marley knew about Historia, they would know already that Eren lacked that power on his own.

And they would go after Historia--probably to kill her if they’re truly so afraid of the titans in the walls coming after them.

“But Eren doesn’t actually need Historia to do this,” you might be thinking. “He has Zeke.” Assuming he is working with Zeke, yes...he does. But Marley doesn’t know about Zeke’s royal lineage.

So here things could go a few ways: maybe Eren has replaced Historia with Zeke. Maybe Eren intends to eat Zeke to gain both another titan power and the royal blood necessary to wield the Founding Titan. Hell, maybe Zeke’s even in on this plan because of Reasons. It’s also possible that due to Plot Reasons, Historia will become relevant again, either to the Paradis crew because her talent as a member of the royal family is needed, or to the Marley crew for the, uh, same reason. (Or more like, to prevent Paradis from using her.) I’d like to believe that Isayama wouldn’t ignore Historia for the duration of this series, at least.

So back to Ymir and the title of this post. How could she possibly have a role to play after all of this time? Well...through Porco.

Something interesting I noticed is that while Porco is busy being an asshole to Reiner about how “oh if they’d have chosen me instead things would be better blah blah” (easy to talk shit about, of course, because he wasn’t there), Reiner’s angry face does an about-face.

Interesting that this is the first thing Reiner thinks to ask. But it also seems to be the first time Reiner has really sat with Porco and discussed the whole “inheritance” angle--at least, in recent memory. Because you’d think Porco would have told this to Reiner already by this point...

He says he only understood “a bit” about Ymir, but from what little he says, it seems to me like he might have understood much more than that. His expression also turns kind of sad when he relates this information, which points toward him being sympathetic toward Ymir.

It makes sense. He knows her life, now, and so he knows how horribly his people were treated in a past he’s not old enough to otherwise be privy to. He knows that Ymir started out similarly to any of them: a mainland Eldian.

But one thing he doesn’t mention that he may be aware of is Historia. This makes Porco the only person who could have that knowledge, and who could piece it together. Imagine if he saw her--touched her hand?

Ymir may be dead, but her memories live on. Yeah, they’re in Porco, and he’s not exactly the sweetest guy in the world, but we’ve seen his, erm, less than stellar loyalty to Marley. He may dislike Reiner, but with these memories he’s got a lot more to dislike about Marley than he does about Reiner. After all, who put Marcel in a position to die? Marley. Who keeps pushing Pieck to stay transformed for ages and not always giving her enough recovery time? Marley. Who put Ymir out there in the first place? Marley.

Yeah, he’s gonna still dislike Reiner, but I feel like part of that has faded; his jibes just aren’t that spirited, not like they were when he was a kid.

Right now Porco is in a pit, but he’s with Pieck who recognized that soldier...and it’s possible that if Porco accesses Ymir’s memories down there, he might know who that soldier was...and after that, well, the possibilities are endless.
