SCOTUS Leaning Left? - 03/19/2024
State's Attorney's General from Missouri and Louisiana yesterday gave their oral arguments to the Supreme Court of The United States on that the Biden team breached the first amendment by coercing social media outlets to remove content associated with the 2020 election and Covid-19, claiming it was misinformation. Louisiana's AG, Liz Merrill said that she feels "cautiously optimistic" on the court's upcoming decision. She also said that she believes this case to be "hugely important." Yet the justices overall seemed to be indicating that they are unwilling to restrict the ability of government in pushing social media to censor content that might appear as harmful to the public. Liz Merrill continued to say, "We are engaging in a lot of conversations now about how modern technology adapts to tried and true principles of liberty and justice and freedom that protect us and have protected us since the Constitution was ratified." She continued on about her cautious optimism that the justices will land where she wholeheartedly believes they should land, in favor of protecting free speech: “And that’s some of the concerns that were laid out here with regard to where the line is drawn from encouragement to coercion, that there is a way to sort of determine that that’s what judges do every day … and it will be a fact-based inquiry.”
Dr. Aaron Kheriaty, who was standing with the attorney generals, said this to the Epoch Times: “Clearly, several of the justices grasp what is at stake, they review the evidentiary record carefully, and I’m optimistic that they will do the right thing.” He continued after expressing his belief that social media platforms have censored truthful speech at the behest of the government: “we need not make the case that the speech that was censored was truthful in order to win the legal argument. The reason for that is that the government has no role in deciding what is and what is not truthful speech and policing and forcing that speech to be removed from the public square. The government’s only job is to draw the line between legal and illegal speech, illegal speech being very narrowly defined by the courts, jurisprudence.”
Missouri Attorney General, Andrew Bailey said this: “I think the justices appropriately recognized the level of government activity here and then it was coercive in nature.” Justice Clearance Thomas made the point that sometimes: "the tech companies in question are blurring the lines between private action and public enforcement." - noted Bailey. When questioned whether the censored content was true, he said: “This has never been about truth; it’s always been about power. But the distinction between truth and untruth really exemplifies why the federal government is not in the truth-determining business. If they don’t think something is true, then their authority is to speak out against what they believe is untrue, not to censor speech.”
Mary Holland, President and Gerneral Counsel for the Children's Health Defense, chaired by Robert F. Kennedy Jr, said this: “If the justices decide unwisely, what we wrote in our brief is we are living in a brave new world … We already have a massive censorship complex, and that will get bigger and it will get more entrenched.” She went on, telling the Epoch Times: “It’s incredibly disappointing to me as a liberal that the classical organizations that defended free speech like the ACLU is not involved in this case.” Regarding the pharmaceutical industry, she said: “My colleague told me that 70 percent of Democrats favor censorship today. I can’t fathom that. You know, it used to be that the Left, so-called, was skeptical of big, big, big business. And now they’re embracing emergency use authorization, medical products that have the potential to cause severe harm. I’m flabbergasted.” She's disappointed with the liberal movement, saying: “Historically, it was liberals who stood up for free speech.”
Another party listed in the case, journalist Jim Hoft, opined that the government was "lying" about the reasons for censorship. He believes this is a “very pivotal case,” and if the government is allowed to “get away” with the censorship experienced by the parties in this suit, “it’s only going to get worse.” He continued telling the Epoch Times: “This has to be where they put a stop to this. The government shouldn’t be doing this, especially when they’re wrong, and pushing their own opinion, silencing dissenting voices. Of course, it’s against the Constitution. It’s a no-brainer.”
My own personal opinion, I think the government should only allow social media platforms to censor or remove content that is illegal, obscene as defined by their stated guidelines, defamatory, or that which clearly encourages illegal acts and/or self-harm or suicide. I don't think they should be allowed to alter or remove in any way any content they don't agree with, politically or otherwise. Even if the content in question is not truthful or misleading. The counter to lies should be to post the truth, not to remove them. I also think, in spite the justices appearing to be leaning more to the left and censorship, that they will more likely rule on the side of free speech, but I wouldn't hold my breath...

I'm on a Marco kick now. Here's the start of my Marco Animorphs playlist I'm now apparently putting together (songs are grouped together thematically). 90s only for that extra animorphs vibe.
General Marco Vibes

Ironic (by Alanis Morissette) - "And life has a funny way of helping you out when you think everything's gone wrong and everything blows up in your face."
Flexy Boy (by Merrill Nisker (Peaches before she was Peaches)) - "Flexy boy! Flexiable! Changes shape!"
Burning Rubber (by Mr. Mirainga) - "When I'm drivin' my speed demon machine, flyin', three digits, man. Nothin' you've ever seen. Cam and crankshaft turning. Smell the engine burnin'."
Girls and Boys (by Blur) - "Girls who are boys who like boys to be girls who do boys like they're girls, who do girls like they're boys."
Clever (by Jill Sobule) - "I can be clever, I can be clever. I can charm your pants off, I can be clever. I can be funny, I can make you laugh."
I'm gonna be rich and famous
Supermodel (by Jill Sobule) - "And my hair will shine like the sea. And every one will wanna look just like me 'cause I'm young and I'm hip, so beautiful."
Perfect World (by Liz Phair) - "I wanna be cool, tall, vulnerable, and luscious. I would have it all if I'd only had this much."
Throw My Name (by Merrill Nisker (Peaches before she was Peaches)) - "I want to walk into a room and not have to explain who I am or what I do because people will know my name."
I'm not always easy to be around
Have You Ever (by The Offspring) - "Have you ever buried your face in your hands 'Cause no one around you understands Or has the slightest idea what it is that makes you be?"
Basket Case (by Green Day) - "Neurotic to the bone, no doubt about it. Sometimes I give myself the creeps. Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me. It all keeps adding up. I think I'm cracking up. Am I just paranoid?"
Answers (by Goldfinger) - "That's when I realize, that I see what I'm really selling. You tell me where your skeleton's hiding. Tell me all and I'll tell you. You think you have a real good fucking answer, a fucking answer I'll give you."
If I had a nickel for every time I tried to kill my mom, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice
Walking On Broken Glass (by Annie Lennox) - "Since you abandoned me, my whole life has crashed. Won't you pick the pieces up, 'cause it feels just like I'm walking on broken glass."
Disarm (by Smashing Pumpkins) - "I used to be a little boy, so old in my shoes. And what I choose is my choice. What's a boy supposed to do? The killer in me is the killer in you."

Wish (by Nine Inch Nails) - "Climbed up real high, now fall down real far. No need for me to stay. The last thing left, I just threw it away. I put my faith in God and my trust in you. Now there's nothing more fucked up I could do. [...] I'm the one without a soul, I'm the one with this big fucking hole."
It's Not That Serious (by Jennifer Lopez) - "It should concern you, that I'm always one step ahead of you. So that should let you know that what you do I have done before, it's nothing new. So run those games on someone who can be fooled."

Tumblr media

The UI design of each menu in Destiny is meant to evoke a sense of unique importance, with each item always given its own square, each of which contains an easily digested icon and nested information when hovered over by the fully movable selection circle. In presenting itself in this way, the game is emphasizing that while there are going to be some items or buffs that are more valuable overall, they aren’t necessarily going to more valuable to every single player, especially when it comes to customization and weapon/armor loadout.

My Best Girl (1927)
The film starts out at The Merrill Department store where a very exhausted stockgirl named Maggie Johnson (Mary Pickford) is given a moment to attend to the sales counter. There she encounters a charming handsome man who pretends to be interested in purchasing some children's toys but, after many humorous demonstrations by Maggie, the manager comes over and gives the man his time card. The man is said to be Joe Grant (Buddy Rogers) though in reality he is the son of the owner; making him Joseph Merrill. To prove to his father he is ready for his engagement, he has taken the job of stockboy under an assumed name.
Annoyed, Maggie takes Joe back to the stockroom and tells him to get to work. He is so inept that she calls him, 'The Dumbest Stockboy in the World' though she promises to take him under her wing, much to his amusement.
A few days later, after her shift, Maggie is outside waiting for Joe. She appears to have a crush on him. Some of her coworkers tease her but eventually warn her that Joe is coming, causing Maggie to hop on her ride home from work: the back of an open truck. Joe is swarmed with salesgirls who try for his attention causing him to not focus on Maggie. Determined Maggie throws her bag on the ground as the vehicle pulls away. Joe picks it up and chases the truck down to give it to her. After three more times of this, he finally grows weary and jumps in the truck to join Maggie, who feigns innocence.
The two flirt and Maggie shows him pictures of her off-kilter family. Once they reach her home, she invites him in for supper only to find her family is causing a commotion. Her father (Lucien Littlefield) is an elderly postal worker who is meek and easily subdued. Her mother (Sunshine Hart) is a dramatic woman who enjoys going to random funerals and makes frequent use of smelling salts to avoid fainting. Her sister Liz (Carmelita Geraghty) is a flapper who has a boyfriend who gets her into trouble. Maggie does her best to hide the goings on but eventually caves and sends Joe on his way hoping to have dinner with him another day.
Time passes and Joe's mother is planning his engagement announcement party. However, she has not mentioned it to him, hoping to make it a surprise. Joe has been promoted and is now Maggie's boss. However, he still eats lunch with her every day in the stockroom. During one such lunch, after receiving the note to join his parents for dinner (for the surprise party), Maggie gives him a watch for his birthday. He is touched and puts it on. Shortly after this he accidentally catches his sleeve on a nail. Trying to pull himself free, he accidentally puts his arm around Maggie, and after the mutual surprise the two kiss.
Enamored with each other they head out on the town to walk in the rain. Joe begins to spend money and she tells him he'll end up in the poorhouse. Joe offers to buy her dinner at a nice restaurant but, embarrassed by her shoddy work clothes, Maggie declines. Joe gets the idea to tell her they should follow the store's company motto, "We're all a family" and that, if they were family, they could eat at the Merrill Mansion. Maggie, thinking he is joking, agrees. Meanwhile, her sister is arrested because of her association with her boyfriend and is taken to night court. Her family frets at not being able to find Maggie, who they believe needs to help Liz out of the mess. Maggie had tried to call them, but after a few rings (while her father made his way to the phone) she hung up.
Arriving at the Merrill Mansion, Maggie is amazed that it is the real deal. Joe is amused by her reluctance but eventually gets her into the mansion, much to the butler's amusement. Maggie is extremely reluctant until Joe convinces the butler to say 'a Merrill employee eats here almost every night!' Maggie relaxes and tells Joe they should pretend to be Mr. and Mrs. Merrill. Joe is extremely amused by this, and at her lack of formal dinner habits.
At the surprise engagement party, Joe's family sits concerned. They return home to find Joe and Maggie, who has hidden under the table. Joe admits he is 'Joseph Merrill' but before he can explain further his fiancée (Avonne Taylor) arrives and kisses him in front of Maggie. Maggie, heartbroken leaves. Joe, upset, tells his fiancée he had broken Maggie's heart and must go after her.
Maggie walks and walks until she returns to where Joe and her shared a moment which happens to be by the night court. She sees her family arrive and after they chasten her they enter the court to try to save Liz from prison. Meanwhile, Joe arrives at the same spot only to be helped by a homeless man who had watched their interactions. Joe enters the court to hear Maggie's passionate plea for her sister, whom the judge eventually lets go.
While Maggie fetches water for her 'on the verge of fainting' mother, Joe walks over to Maggie and apologizes, saying he did not love his fiancée and would not marry her. He then proposes to Maggie which causes (for a change) her sister to faint. While everyone tries to revive Liz, Liz's boyfriend makes a remark to her father about Maggie 'taking up with the Merrill boy' implying that it was only for sex. Joe, offended, punches him and begins to fight in the courtroom.
The next day, Maggie is back home, reading the paper which has headlines about their romance. Joe's father (Hobart Bosworth) arrives at the home. He tells Maggie he wants to send his son to Hawaii until the scandal blew over, which Joe agreed to. However, Joe apparently made plans to bring Maggie as well and marry on the boat. Mr. Merrill, not happy with this, tries to buy Maggie off with a check for $10,000 just as Joe arrives, unaware his father is there. Joe tells Maggie his plans and she becomes upset. Angry, she begins a whole tirade against him trying to find out if he really loved her or not. She begins to claim she is just a jazz girl and knew who he was all along. That she was a gold digger and just after his money and, thanks to his father, she now had what she wanted. She even plays a jazz record and puts on lipstick in an attempt to prove her point.
Joe begins to cry, and Maggie, touched, breaks down and admits that none of it is true and the real reason she cannot go away with him is because of her family (who had been listening in the living room the whole time) who needs her more than he does. Her father becomes livid and declares it was time 'he became the father of the family' and takes charge of his wife and daughters. In a comedic scene he commands everyone (including both Merrills) to pack Maggie's things for the ship which leaves in ten minutes.
After an extreme car ride, the couple barely make it to the departing boat. Once boarded, the father realizes he never gave Maggie her suitcase. He tries to throw the suitcase onto the boat, but it ends up in the ocean. The couple waves goodbye and eventually get crowded back from view. When the crowd leaves, we see the couple kissing.

@stories-from-thedas whispered: 💝💝💝 - Elisabeth, Mia, and Edgar send 💝 + a muse and i’ll talk about my ship preferences for them
ELISABETH AMELL
ELISABETH & ALSTAIR - okay, i was kind of posting about it last night but alistair literally means the world to eliza, romantic or not.  he’s the first person she meets outside of the circle (besides duncan) who really interests her and takes an interest in her.  he’s funny, friendly, sort of stupid, and kind of really fucking cute.  on top of that, they go through this huge trauma together which has a way of bonding people rather they like it or not and she really attaches to him after that.  she loves him - in any verse, no matter what, and she’d do anything to keep him safe and i think it’s really cute but also sort of tragic.  because she’s been so deprived of love all these years that she doesn’t know how to love in small doses and i think she keeps it bottled up once she realizes it, even though she knows it’s safe, because she’s scared of scaring him with just how much she cares about him.  but she’s always got his back, and obviously alistair always has the warden’s back, and i think they’re just... very sweet.
ELISABETH & LELIANA - hah.  i bet anyone who knows me expected me to say elisabeth and cullen second but i’m actually dying to ship her with a leliana.  i think that they’d be really fucking cute because they’re both BABY in origins and leliana has all these incredible stories and fun tales and eliza eats all of them up like she’s so desperate for this knowledge that leli has to share.  i think about them traveling together after origins and just seeing things and seeing orlais and writing letters when they can’t be together and being gay and shit and it literally just.  ugh my poor lesbian heart can’t fucking take it.  i think they’d be adorable.  where the fuck my leli’s at.
ELISABETH + CULLEN - yeah it’s here.  i’m a slut for cullen / amell and i think everyone knows it.  i really like the two of them together because i like the healing aspect of the ship.  like they’ve both been through so much shit and they’re both carrying so much weight on their shoulders and i think they can find a lot of forgiveness and solace and healing in each other and that’s very sweet.  elisabeth is so ridiculously proud of who cullen has become and how he’s grown and she’s just... happy for him.  when they meet again in inquisition and she’s there because leli wrote her and she sees him she’s just happy for him.  she’s so happy and proud and i think they’d be a very sweet slow burn or slow rekindling of romance type thing.
there are more but someone else asked about liz so i’m saving them <3
MIA RUTHERFORD
MIA & AN INQUISITOR - i don’t have preferences.  it’s fun to write her against trevelyans but really i think she and any inquisitor would be cute and interesting so long as the personalities meshed.  i like the idea of her stealing a love interest right out from under cullen’s nose because she and i are petty that way.  but also i think the idea of someone just kind of showing her how to lighten up and enjoy herself would be very cute and a lot of fun.
MIA & BLACKWALL - do you know how long i’ve been writing mia and i’ve shipped her and blackwall this entire time and i have YET to find a blackwall.  i think they’d be SO FUCKING CUTE, brian.  i don’t have a huge reason, but the way he calls his li a lady would have her swooning on the floor.  and the idea of them sparing together?  woof.  and just how sweet he tends to be and how playful and flirty and sort of fun and UGH.  i think they’d be so cute.  i’m gonna die.
MIA & JOSEPHINE - i don’t have a huge reason for this.  i just think mia and josie would be really really really fucking cute. HFKDLSHLKER
MIA & CAILAN - honorary mention.  i think they’re precious.  i clearly have a thing for putting mia in relationships where her status as a normal lame ass peasant girl would be an issue and potentially make her really uncomfortable.  but it also has the added benefit of being the kind of relationship that would convince mia to relax.  and i def think there would be some self worth learning there for her which is def something that needs to happen.
EDGAR STEINER
EDGAR & HAWKE - cute.  they’re just cute.  it’s like anders and hawke without the extra angst because ( sorry anders u know i love u ) edgar isn’t batshit insane.  but also like... edgar is a lot more laid back in general than anders tends to be as dragon age progresses.  he doesn’t bring a lot of that heavy emotional stuff to the table and i think he would be good for someone who needs that sort of more carefree or laid back personality.  he values his freedom a lot, and that includes his personal freedom, so he does well with someone who has a life outside of him.
EDGAR & ANDERS - ironically, i think they’d be good together too.  i think edgar would be a sort of balancing influence on anders extremism and i think anders would be a grounding influence on edgar’s more lacksidasical lifestyle.  i also think it’s important that they clearly have similar goals, though edgar doesn’t go to the same extremes anders does and wouldn’t ever really entertain the thought.  he doesn’t completely disapprove, however.  he’s supportive of anders in the end and even considers him a hero, it’s just not something he would’ve done.
EDGAR & MERRILL - i think edgar would be the only mage companion who doesn’t look negatively at merrill for being a blood mage.  he doesn’t enthusiastically support her, but he also wouldn’t be quite so on her ass as anders is.  i think they could have a similar vibe to merrill and isabela, which is one of my fav ships.  like... idk they’d be cute.
