like, to me... well. thereâs this thing in movies that iâve discussed with my mother, actually (and iâm sure thousands of other people have noticed it, too; there is nothing new under the sun, etc). she calls it âapocalypse fathers.â in particular, two examples come to mind, just off the top of my head: harry stamper from armageddon and jason lerner from deep impact.
1998: big year for asteroid movies. and daddy issues.
the basic thesis of these men, and my momâs assessment of them, is that these are the quintessential action hero-turned-father roles. theyâre propaganda. theyâre a very specific kind of male power fantasy. they may have failed their children (their daughters; itâs almost always daughters, because liv tylerâs role in armageddon simply wouldnât have worked if she switched roles with ben affleck; if she had been up there on the rock screaming and beating her fists on the capsule while he had his quiet, tearful âdaddy, donât go!â from back home in houston. daughters are more complicated than sons, which makes them less complicated. and youâre allowed to love your daughter without posturing) in life, but when the chips are down, they get their big, final moment to put it all right, and they donât even hesitate. of course theyâll die for (or with, in the case of jason lerner) their kids. theyâve loved them all along! and it doesnât matter that they completely dropped the ball at providing emotional support or guidance when they were alive, it doesnât matter that they effectively ruined their kidsâ lives for selfish reasons or on account of insurmountable personal failures, because theyâre Saint Padre now. in one final moment, they are redeemed. and every father wants to touch that kind of redemption, so it always hits.
i watched armageddom with my mother, and she told me that she never once doubted her dad would do what harry stamper did. but she hasnât talked to him in years. he was never graced with extenuating circumstances to forgive his many parental failures. and i wonder, how true is that for many estranged fathers out there? how many sad old men are going to die unmourned, because they were saving all their best stuff for the end times?
#text post#armageddon#deep impact#harry stamper#jason lerner#apocalypse fathers#not me writing this post as if i didn't sob so loud i woke up the entire house when i watched the end of big fish#like i am NOT immune to Deadbeat Dad Propaganda don't get it twisted i do not even claim to be#anyone who's seen this blog at all knows that i LOVE armageddon#and i don't think i've posted about it but i really love deep impact as well#and this is kind of my most uncharitable reading of harry stamper in particular like i know all the backstory#but it's about the role he fills#and this idea that like. it doesn't matter how bad of a parent (father--like the child is always a girl the parent is always a man)#you are#as long as you give up everything in the end#it wipes your slate clean#which. it SHOULDN'T!#you might be willing to die for your kid but would you change your lifestyle for them?#but it doesn't matter. because of that Final Act Of Sacrifice#me looking at pop culture tropes: wow. christianity sure did a number on y'all huh#anyway. HI GUYS. remember when i used this blog?#this isn't quite my usual content and is more commentary on tropes and *cough cough* society than it is#movie analysis#but i'm moving back toward the movie watching path now (or... i'm trying. i'm trying.)#so maybe more soon? real stuff soon?#stay tuned

17 Movies Every Bride & Groom Should Watch Before Their Wedding Day
Source: Happy Wedding App
When it comes to watching movies, Romantic movies top the list. Most people prefer to watch cheesy romances on the screen. We all love to see, boy meeting girl, and then they fall in love with each other, then they go through several problems, and finally, they marry. No matter how regular the whole stuff looks like, romantic movies have a flavor of its own. And these movies look more beautiful when you are about to get married. So here is a list of the 17 best movies every bride and groom should watch before their wedding day.
Letâs have a look on the selectionâŚ.

It is a cheerful love story, which revolves around an unconfident sheltered woman, Fotoula âToulaâ Portokalos (Nia Vardalos), struggling to discover her own identity before meeting the man of her dreams, Ian Miller (John Corbett). It is a good romantic dose in case you need a little inspiration before the big day. Do watch and see how a Greek American woman falls in love with a non-Greek man and what happens next.

New from Al and Linda Lerner on Movies and Shakers: Ad Astra
Brad Pitt hurtles through space as astronaut Roy McBride in this visually impressive psychological sci fi drama. The pace is slow, deliberate and totally mesmerizing. Director James Gray (The Lost City of Z with Pitt) wanted to make this film the most realistic depiction of space travel ever put on the big screen. Itâs realistically unrealistic. He even used archival sounds from space launches to enhance the total experience. Max Richter (Shutter Island, Mary Queen of Scots), sets the mood with a dreamlike, ethereal score. Because of the visuals, we recommend seeing this one in IMAX.
The opening scenes put Roy on a mammoth tower-observatory at the edge of space above Earth. Heâs outside on a repair mission when there is a catastrophic power surge that causes him to get knocked off. He is propelled toward Earth. Your heart will race. He was facing certain death, but Roy calmly and methodically gets the situation under control. We thought this might end up being a very short movie.Â
James creates the most perfect astronaut in Brad Pittâs character, Major Roy McBride. He is the son of brilliant scientist and revered astronaut-explorer, Clifford McBride (Tommy Lee Jones). The elder McBride left decades ago on the Lima Project, determined to find intelligent life, but hasnât been heard from in years, and is presumed dead. He left when Roy was a child. Roy took up the family business.Â
Roy is emotionless in the face of danger. Nothing seems to rattle him. He constantly takes psychological evaluations through the film, always passing the test to continue the mission. H watchword is, âI will not allow myself to be distracted.â Roy seems to have been stripped of human emotion and empathy. Thatâs the big reason heâs separated from his wife, Eve (Liv Tyler) who James depicts in scenes forlornly looking at Roy from afar. With sad eyes, she barely says anything, but you know it just isnât working.Â
Because of the surge which is threatening the Earthâs very existence, Space Com suspects it originated from the Lima ship now near Neptune. Has Royâs father gone rogue? Roy encounters his fatherâs old friend, Colonel Pruitt (Donald Sutherland) who helps sheds light on the father and sonâs distant relationship.Â
Roy is sent on the mission to stop the surge and find out if his father is still alive. First he goes to the moon, where he ends up in a chase with pirates in lunar dune buggies a la Mad Max. That chase is ludicrous, shot from the side to side, and overhead showing wheel marks in the moonâs surface. Of course, Roy wins that round and he and his crew proceed to Mars. On the way, an encounter with another ship, and the animal lab experiment on it, is one that might send you to the moon or at least jump sky high. Â
The film supposedly takes place in the near future, but not really. The Moon is already colonized, and there is a whole population living under Mars. There, Roy encounters Helen Lantos, (Ruth Negga) who was born on the Red Planet. Near future? Not so much. Discussion with Lantos about life in space and family start to make Royâs emotions emerge. When heâs pulled off the mission because of his feelings, the movie devolves into standard action scenes to become a stowaway and continue the course. Can you really just climb on and into a space ship as itâs blasting off the surface of Mars? Itâs becomes more like a Moonraker film. James and Cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema (Interstellar) use every camera able to shoot Pitt climbing up, down and all around, to get into the space ship. Roy is back on on track again.
The arc of this story is Brad Pittâs journey towards becoming fully human. He has always been able to control his emotions but as the plot unfolds he begins to lose control. As this happens he emerges as a character who we can care about and have sympathy for. Itâs all in Pittâs face. The reflections of light on his eyes through the glass of his helmet show more emotion than is he said one word. His are eyes show wonder, then calculation, and finally revelation as heâs learning to be human again reflecting on memories in flashbacks with his wife and his father throughout this journey. Â
You have to allow yourself to get into the deliberate rhythm of the movie. When James lets the pace dictate the progression, it creates more suspense and tension than in the few contrived action sequences that do pick it up. The director uses the supporting cast minimally. Just like Tarentino did in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, James lets Pittâs face tell the story without much dialogue. His performance elevates this movie beyond a simple space adventure scenario. Ad Astra means âto the stars.â Despite the breathtaking visions James creates of these celestial bodies and space, Brad Pitt is the brightest star.

About Meatless Monday
Meatless Monday is a nonprofit public health initiative founded by Sid Lerner, chairman of The Monday Campaigns. The initiative is in association with the Lerner Centers for Public Health Promotion at Johns Hopkins, Columbia and Syracuse universities. Meatless Monday encourages the public to cut back on meat consumption one day a week to reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and cancer, and lessen the environmental impact of meat production on climate change, water and land use. The campaign is founded on research that demonstrates Monday is the day we are most primed to start and sustain a healthy new behavior. Since its launch on 2003, Meatless Monday has become an international movement in more than 40 countries with support from governments, schools, celebrities, restaurants, and local and global organizations.Â
