happy wednesday friends! quick tw for broken bones (nothing graphic) and a mention of animal death (once again nothing graphic)

Cady hates the sound of her ringtone.

Not the sound itself, but the meaning behind it. Other than her parents, nobody calls her with any sort of regularity. Janis gets anxious making phone calls, Damian doesn’t have time, and all her other friends just prefer to text.

Which is why her heart nearly drops out of her chest when her phone starts ringing in the middle of a lecture. Luckily, it’s with her favorite professor, who just waves her off and continues as she excuses herself to answer it in the hallway.

She grimaces when she sees it’s from Damian, he knows she’s supposed to be in class and that she has a huge test next week. She needs to be in this lecture. But, if Damian is calling it must be something serious.

“Dame, I’m in the middle of a lecture, what is it?” She asks frantically.

“I know, Cads, I’m sorry, but...uh...” Damian trails off.

“Damian, please, I can only be out here for a few minutes,” Cady begs.

“Janisbrokeherarm.”

“She what? What the hell happened?! Wait, where are you? I’m on my way,” Cady asks rapidly, running back to her seat in the classroom to grab her bag before barreling out the door. She��ll explain to her professor later.

“We’re at the hospital, hold on,” Damian replies. Cady gets a text with directions to the correct one. “She came to visit me at work today, so I was showing her around, and she fell into the pit. It’s not far, but she landed weird and broke both bones in her forearm.”

“Poor thing. Can I talk to her?” Cady asks, wanting to hear her wife’s voice.

“She’s... kind of unconscious. She was freaking out about being in the hospital and in a lot of pain so they sedated her,” Damian says nervously.

“I thought she got over her thing about hospitals,” Cady mutters. “My poor darling. How are you doing, though?”

“I’m fine. I just... really don’t like broken bones. And hers were very broken,” Damian says.

“Oh, Damian, I’m sorry. I forgot you had that phobia,” Cady says worriedly. “Thank you for taking care of her.”

“We’ve been taking care of each other for twenty years, I’m not about to stop now. But you should hurry, the doctor just said she’ll be up soon,” Damian replies, already sounding a bit better. “They said she’ll be pretty out of it, but she’ll want to see you.”

“I’m almost there,” Cady says. “I’ll see you soon.”

“Okay. Love you,” Damian says before they hang up.

“Love you too, D.”

Once she finally arrives, Cady rushes up to the front desk with her ID already out. She signs in quickly before an intern leads her up to a small room.

Cady knocks on the door gently before pushing it open, finding a newly awake and very high Janis being cradled in Damian’s embrace. Cady sits in an uncomfortable chair by the bed, taking Janis’ unhurt hand and kissing her knuckles.

“Hi, darling, how are you feeling?” Cady asks gently.

“M’ arms tickle. ‘N this one doesn’ work,” Janis mumbles in reply, showing off her right arm with a dashing purple cast that goes almost to her shoulder.

“It will soon, sweetheart, you just have to wear the cast for a while,” Cady says comfortingly.

Janis finally looks at Cady, her eyes going almost comically wide in shock. She looks back and forth between Cady and Damian a few times as if making sure they’re both actually there. “Caddy?”

“Mmhmm. I’m right here,” Cady says. “I’m sorry I wasn’t here when you woke up, but I’m here now.”

“You’re pretty. Will you be m’ girlfrien’?” Janis asks, looking to Damian for moral support.

Cady bursts out laughing. “I can’t be your girlfriend-“ she tries to say before getting cut off by a sniffle from Janis.

“Why not?” Janis asks pitifully, followed by a sad sob.

“Oh, darling, don’t cry,” Cady says frantically. “I can’t be your girlfriend because I’m already your wife, my love.”

“Really?” Janis asks with a sad sniffle.

“Mmhmm. See, your wedding ring is here,” Cady answers, lifting Janis’ left hand and pointing to her finger. “And mine is here.”

“Whoa. M’ wife. That’s so cool,” Janis says, totally starstruck by her wife. She reaches for Cady to hold her then, finally freeing poor Damian.

He stands and stretches, apparently having been there for a while longer than Cady had originally thought. “Janjan, are you hungry? I’m gonna see what they have in the cafeteria.”

“Wan’ nuggets,” Janis mumbles sleepily before he even finishes speaking.

“How many nuggets, darling?” Cady asks, cuddling her closer.

“All.” Janis insists. Damian blinks at her for a second before seeming to accept it.

“I’ll see what I can do.”

Janis goes quiet for several minutes, seemingly content to just be held. Alas, it can’t last, and she pipes up again.

“Caddy?”

“Yes, Jellybean?” Cady replies.

“D’we have a dog?”

“No, we don’t, unfortunately,” Cady says as she tries to hold back a giggle.

“A cat?” Janis asks, getting more confused with every question.

“No cat either, I’m afraid,” Cady says.

“D’we have a baby?”

Cady freezes. She’s been meaning to ask Janis about children, but didn’t know how to bring it up. “No, we don’t have a baby yet, it’s just you and me for now,” She replies, deciding high Janis is probably not the one to discuss that with.

“Wha’ the hell’ve we been up to?” Janis demands. “No doggy, no kitty, no baby. W’ need something.”

Cady chuckles again. “We’ve only been married for a year, darling. Maybe we’ll talk about a cat once you’re less loopy.”

“Mmkay,” Janis hums, seeming content with that and nuzzling into Cady’s chest. Cady taps her awake when she realizes she’s falling asleep again.

“Don’t go to sleep, dearest, Damian will be back with your food soon,” she says as she drums her fingers on Janis’ cheeks gently.

“Mmh. Sleepy,” Janis whines.

Cady chuckles. “I know, Jellybean. But you need to stay awake so you can eat. You can nap when we get home, I promise. Look, Damian’s already back.”

“Hi, Dame,” Janis says with a bit more energy as he pulls around a table and rests her tray of food on it.

“Hi, Jan,” he chuckles in reply. “Here you go. They could only give me ten nuggets, I’m sorry.”

Janis glares at him as she tries to pick up her fork and grumbles under her breath about leaving a terrible review on Yelp. She blinks oddly at her hand when she can’t use it, wiggling her fingers as if she’s only just remembering she can control them.

“Caddy. M’ arm’s purple. Why’s it not workin’?” She demands, trying to grab her fork again.

“It’s broken, darling, that’s your cast. Use this hand,” Cady says gently as she taps Janis’ left hand.

“Oh.” Janis says. “I like purple.”

“That’s why we picked it, Janjan,” Damian says as he tries to hold back laughter. “Eat your food, you get discharged soon.”

Janis tries to eat again with her left hand, giving a quiet maniacal cackle when it actually works.

The doctor comes in with her discharge papers as Janis is munching happily on her fourth chicken nugget, explaining the proper care of her arm and cast to Cady upon noticing Janis is still fairly loopy. Cady thanks her and signs Janis out, letting Janis finish her food before they head home.

Janis falls asleep on the ride back, leaving Cady to haul her up to their apartment and into bed. She decides to email her professor an apology and get caught up on some schoolwork as she lies in bed next to her.

“Caddy? Wh’happent?” Janis asks groggily when she stirs a few hours later. She pauses when she tries to stretch, spying the bright purple cast covering her arm. “Ah, fuck.”

“You fell in the pit at Damian’s theater today, you broke your arm,” Cady answers with a giggle. “Do you remember anything?”

“I remember falling and then my arm hurt like a bitch, but nothing after,” Janis says confusedly.

“They had to sedate you at the hospital, you were hurting a lot and freaking out a bit,” Cady replies. “You were awake by the time I got there though.”

“I was? What did I do?” Janis asks, already dreading the answer.

Cady’s giggling only makes her feel worse. “Well, when you saw me you said I was pretty and asked if I would be your girlfriend.”

“Oh god,” Janis groans.

“And then you cried when I said no, until I told you we’re married,” Cady laughs harder.

“Oh god.”

“It was cute, don’t be embarrassed,” Cady teases, tickling her neck to get her to look back up.

“I’m not cute!” Janis insists.

“Yes you are. Anyway, um... you demanded Damian bring you all the chicken nuggets they had in the cafeteria and said you’d leave them a terrible review on Yelp when he could only give you ten, and then you asked me if we had a dog, and then when I said no you asked if we had a cat, and then when I said no to that too you asked if we had a baby.”

“Really?” Janis chuckles.

“Yeah. Then you got your food, asked me why your arm wasn’t working, and fell asleep on the ride home,” Cady says.

“Huh.” Janis hums. “Wait, baby, you were in class! Shit, I’m sorry-“

“Shh, Bluejay, it’s fine,” Cady hushes her. “My professor understands, and I can get notes later. It’ll be fine. You didn’t mean to fall.”

“That pit was not where it was supposed to be,” Janis grumbles. “Now I can’t straighten my arm.”

“You will soon, love,” Cady says. “Just a few weeks.”

“Hmph.”

“Don’t be so fussy, you’ll be fine,” Cady chides. She knows she’s about to make a very abrupt subject change, but can’t hold back the question anymore. “Um... do you... actually want a baby? At some point?”

Janis sighs. “I’m not sure. Definitely not anytime soon, but down the line, I don’t know. I like the idea of it, but I don’t think I would make a very good parent.”

“I get that, but I think you would be great. You’re fun, but you’re also so gentle and sweet. And a fair bit more responsible than you used to be,” Cady replies.

“I fell in a hole in the middle of a stage,” Janis reminds her, holding up her cast.

“It’s a step up from the time you sprained your ankle running from that cow,” Cady says. “But really, I think you’d make a wonderful parent if you wanted to be.”

“I don’t know. I just, like- what if my anxiety acts up, or my depression? What if I can’t take care of them?” Janis asks, cuddling closer into her side.

Cady hums sadly. “Then we’d support you, and I’ll step up a little more until you can. You wouldn’t be doing this alone, Jayjay. And you’ve been doing so well lately, your communication is so much better, and your therapist really seems to be helping. You’ve never let anything stop you before, if we decide to have a child someday you shouldn’t let it stop you then either.”

Janis leans up to kiss her gently. “Thanks, Butterfly. I’ll think about it more.”

“If you want to. We have time,” Cady says gently. “In the meantime... maybe we should see about a cat?”

“Really?” Janis squeals. She’s been begging for a pet for months. Cady had to take her to get a rabies shot when she came home with a raccoon one day. Hopefully a cat will stop her from taking matters into her own hands.

“Sure, why not? It’s almost summer, I’ll have a little bit more free time to help with it,” Cady giggles. “One of my mom’s co-workers does cat rescues on the side, we can pick one when we go home for Julie’s birthday.” Janis practically tackles her to the bed, kissing her cheeks over and over.

“Hey, watch your arm,” Cady scolds gently when Janis nearly whacks it against the headboard. “What should we have for dinner?”

“It’s your turn to pick,” Janis replies confusedly.

“Your forearm is in four pieces, you get to pick tonight,” Cady says.

Janis thinks for a second. She might be able to swing something special because of her injury. She whips out her best puppy eyes to boost her chances too. “Can we make pizzas?”

Cady raises an eyebrow at her. “Fine. You’re lucky you’re cute, loser. Come on.”

“I had to be right handed,” Janis grumbles as she tries to knead the dough with her left.

“Switch with me, Jay, you can do this with one hand,” Cady says from where she’s stirring the sauce over the stove.

Janis pouts. “But I always do this.”

Cady turns the burner off and comes to hug Janis around the waist. “We’ll just have to adapt a little until your arm is better. You only have to have the cast for a little while, we’ll figure it out.”

“Fine,” Janis whines.

“Oh come on,” Cady coaxes as she pulls her into a kiss. “You’ll be fine. We’re having fun!”

Janis tries to fight a grin at Cady’s efforts to cheer her up. She’s just so cute, Janis wants her to keep going. “We are. I love you.”

“There you go. I love you too,” Cady says sweetly as she pops up to kiss her one more time. “Now come on, or we’ll never get to eat.

She slaps Janis’ ass lightly as she turns to the stove, prompting a squeal and a “Hey!”, but Cady just laughs and winks as she finishes the dough.

Janis pulls her into a hot mess of a kiss once Cady turns from putting their dinner in the oven and setting a timer.

Cady returns it, checking briefly to make sure Janis has her eyes closed before sneakily reaching to grab a small handful of flour from the bag behind her. She dumps it on Janis’ head right as she pulls back for a breath.

“Oh, you’re in for it now, Peanut,” Janis gasps, arming herself with the bag of cheese as Cady grabs the leftover sauce and flings a spoonful at her. “Hey!”

Cady squeals and ducks behind the counter as Janis chucks a handful of cheese at her, scraping some more sauce onto her spoon and firing another little bit back.

“Missed me,” Janis teases, flinging another handful of cheese. Eventually she runs out and switches to grab the bag of flour, blowing a massive cloud in Cady’s face. Cady splutters, coughing it away before rushing up and dumping her leftover ammo on top of Janis’ head.

“Hey, wait,” Cady begs upon realizing she’s now empty handed. “I don’t have anything to fight with!”

Janis is immune to her plight, raining another handful of flour over her hair and making her look like she’s been through quite a blizzard. “Truce?”

Cady reaches around her to grab some pepperonis, flinging them at Janis like throwing stars. “Never!”

Janis just cackles with laughter and throws more, the two of them continuing until Janis realizes she’s down to her last bit of flour.

“I’m all out, mercy,” she says to fake Cady out. “Come kiss me.” Cady does, and Janis makes sure she’s put her pepperoni down before dumping the last little bit of flour on top of her head.

Cady gasps at the betrayal. “You liar! You tricked me!”

“I win,” Janis smirks.

“Because you cheated! You seduced me into letting you win,” Cady insists. “You little stinker.”

Janis giggles. “I love you. I’m sorry.”

Cady smiles back, kissing Janis again. “I love you too.”

“We made a mess.”

“Yeah, but did you smile?” Cady responds with a cheeky grin.

Janis groans. “Oh my god. Yes, I did, your evil plan worked. But now we have to clean the kitchen.” Cady looks over to check the timer on the oven, they still have a few minutes.

“I’ll vacuum the flour, you get the sauce and stuff. And maybe once we eat we can help clean each other,” she responds with a wink, heading to the hall closet to grab the vacuum. Janis gives a flustered squeak as she grabs a sponge. She really married her perfect woman.

A week or so later, Cady takes Janis to the pet store to shop for cat necessities. She’s lucky that Janis can only use one hand, it gives her less opportunities for mischief. She holds Janis’ working hand and braces herself as they head in.

“Before you ask, no, we are not getting a bird or ferret or bunny or anything but things for our cat,” Cady says just to be safe. “And I will notice if you put a hamster in your pocket.”

“Okay,” Janis pouts, her obvious plans already having been foiled. “Ooh, look, they have little paintbrush catnip toys!”

Cady pulls her back for a second to grab a basket, but does let Janis add the package of toys. “Okay, now we get the stuff we actually need, we can get more toys once we’ve done that.”

Somehow Cady manages to cram a bed, two food dishes, a leash and harness, and several more toys in the basket. Janis holds the carrier they had chosen in her good hand, and Cady has the litter box in her other hand. Janis begs to go look at the birds once they finish, so Cady leads her over and secretly takes a video of Janis dancing with them.

A frankly exhausted looking teenager checks them out, scanning all the jangly toys and other things. Cady had noticed Janis disappeared as she paid for everything, and her jacket pocket is wriggling suspiciously when she returns.

“Put it back,” she demands, not even looking up as she helps the cashier bag all their things. Janis mopes her way back to the dwarf hamsters and puts the little creature back with his friends. “Why do you try that every time? You never get away with it.”

“But one day I might,” Janis replies, taking a couple of bags in her good hand and following Cady out of the store. “You never know.”

“With you, definitely not,” Cady sighs lovingly. “Let’s go get the apartment ready, hm?”

“Race you there,” Janis challenges, running ahead.

“Janis, no, come back! You’re already injured,” Cady calls, but Janis just sticks her tongue out at her and keeps going. “Fine, be that way.”

Cady runs to catch up with her, easily passing her and sticking her own tongue out at Janis.

“Hey! You’re not supposed to be faster than me!” Janis whines as she rushes to keep up with her.

“Oh really? Then how was this supposed to be a fair race, hm?” Cady teases as she stops and allows Janis to catch up. “Come on, loser, keep up.”

“Hmph.”

“Janis, no,” Cady demands, grabbing the hangar Janis is trying to stick into her cast.

“But it itches,” Janis whines.

“If you scratch with this you’ll get infected. Tetanus will be worse to deal with than a broken arm,” Cady says. “Come help me finish packing, it’ll take your mind off it.”

“Okay,” Janis pouts. “When do I get it off?”

Cady suddenly remembers Janis had been high when the doctor gave them the care instructions. “You have about a week left, then they’ll check to make sure it’s healed enough. If it’s not, you might need a smaller cast or a brace for a while.”

“Another cast?” Janis groans. “Ugh.”

“I know, lovey. But that would only be for about three weeks. And it’s important if your bones aren’t healthy enough, we don’t want you to injure it more,” Cady comforts. Janis hands her a shirt to fold and put in their suitcase. So far they’re not doing a great job of distracting her, so Cady changes the subject. “Do you have any idea what kind of cat you want?”

“No,” Janis says. “I kind of want a kitten, but I know senior cats have a hard time getting adopted, so I don’t know what age to pick. And I don’t think I want an orange one, I still miss Pancakes too much.”

Pancakes had fallen ill while Janis was in college, and was put down the summer before her senior year. She had luckily gotten to be there with him, comforting him to the end. She has his ashes in a little box on the dresser.

“I understand. He was such a good boy,” Cady says gently. “We’ll decide when we get there, maybe one will be extra special.”

“Maybe,” Janis says as she hands Cady their folded pairs of socks and does a little happy dance. “I’m excited.”

“I can tell,” Cady giggles. “I’m excited too.”

“Are you sure you don’t want me to drive any of it? It’s a long trip,” Janis says with concern. They were driving to Illinois instead of flying, so they didn’t have to deal with trying to fly the cat back home.

“My love, you’re a bad enough driver with both hands working, I’m very sure I don’t want you driving with just the one,” Cady chuckles in reply. “I’ll be fine, we have enough places to stop so I can take breaks. And I have you to keep me awake and stop me getting bored.”

“I’m a good driver!” Janis insists. Cady raises a suspicious eyebrow at her. “Most of the time.”

“Tell that to the turkey you ran over,” Cady responds.

“I was nineteen! And it was dark!” Janis says. “And to this day, nobody explained to me why the fresh hell there was a turkey in the middle of the road!”

“That’s fair. At least he survived,” Cady giggles. “But seriously, you’re not driving.”

“Okay,” Janis says. “I love you.”

“I love you too,” Cady says, leaning in for a kiss.

“Jay. Breathe,” Cady coaxes a vibrating Janis. They’re picking their cat today, heading to her mom’s friend’s house.

“Sorry,” Janis says, locking all her muscles so she stops shaking.

“Don’t be sorry,” Cady chuckles. “Come on, we’re here.”

“Hey, ladies! I’m Eleanor, you must be Cady,” a woman greets as they come up to the door.

“I am, hi,” Cady says. “It’s nice to meet you.”

Eleanor shakes their hands gently before she leads them inside.

“Jesus Christ,” Janis says as soon as the door is opened. No fewer than forty cats are present, just scattered about doing their thing.

“Yeah, it’s a little jarring to newcomers,” Eleanor chuckles. “Do you have an age range you’re looking for? Our adults are mostly out here, and the kittens are in the room there if you’d like to see them.”

Cady looks to Janis. They both really want a cat, but Janis gets to pick which one due to her injury.

“Can we see the kittens?” Janis asks pensively, looking at the adults scattered around her. They’re cute, but none really jump out at her.

“Absolutely, please watch for tails,” Eleanor says as she leads them down a short hallway. “Our youngest litter aren’t ready to be adopted out yet, but the ones back here are about four months old now, if you’d like one of these.”

Janis squeals quietly when she sees them, trotting around a small pen and playing with various toys.

“You can head in if you like, they’re all very playful,” Eleanor says. Cady and Janis climb over the gate and sit on the ground, waiting to see if any approach them. Janis points to a little black ball of puff in the corner, snoozing quietly on a heating pad.

“Aww,” Cady coos. The kitten wakes to the noise, revealing bright lime green eyes. She comes trotting over, stumbling a couple times on her way. Janis extends a hand for her to sniff, and the kitten brushes against it gently. “Who is this one?”

“Her name is Pillow. We name the kittens random objects so we don’t get too attached,” Eleanor explains. “She’s usually quite shy, but she seems to have taken a liking to you two.”

“Oh, you’re absolutely a witch in disguise,” Janis whispers to the kitten nibbling on her fingertips. “Caddy, look.”

Cady also lets Pillow sniff at her hand, smiling as she apparently decides she’s trustworthy and plops down in her palm.

“Is she the one, Jayjay?” Cady asks, scooping her up to scratch her head. Janis nods and takes the kitten, holding her to her chest. “Can we change her name?”

“Absolutely. It might take her a bit to respond to it, but you’re certainly not stuck with Pillow,” Eleanor responds with a chuckle.

“Pillow isn’t terrible, honestly,” Janis replies. “What should we call her, Cads?”

Cady thinks for a second. “Paka?”

“Which language is that?” Janis asks curiously. It’s cute, but doesn’t really fit the dark little cloud in her hands.

“Swahili,” Cady answers.

“What does it mean?”

“Cat.” Cady mumbles. Janis bursts out laughing. “Don’t make fun of me, I’m not good at naming things!”

“It’s cute, but, uh...” Janis hums.

“I know, it just popped into my head. What do you want her name to be?” Cady asks.

“Something, like, witchy,” Janis says. “Look at her, she’s totally some witch’s familiar.”

Cady chuckles. “She could be. What’s the one from that one Broadway show Damian took us to when I came to New York for the first time? The green one, not the blonde one.”

“Elphaba,” Janis answers, cursing that she knows that. “But I don’t know if I want something that on the nose.” Pillow bites her finger gently. “Yeah, she doesn’t like that. Something close though.”

“What about Elvira? That’s witchy sounding,” Cady responds. “And not Elphaba.”

“That’s perfect,” Janis says happily. “What do you think, kitty? Are you an Elvira?” She meows loudly. “Oh yeah.”

“Perfect! Are you two ready to take her home?” Eleanor asks. “She’s already been spayed and microchipped, we just need to link her chip to your phones and y’all can have her.”

“I think so,” Cady says, chuckling as the kitten tries to nibble on Janis’ nose.

A week later, they’re officially back home in their little apartment, with their new kitten getting acclimated. They’re keeping her in the bedroom for now, and would slowly introduce her to the rest of the apartment soon.

Cady wakes up to something sort of rumbling on her face, and there’s a strange warmth over her forehead. She’s confused until she reaches a hand up and feels Elvira resting over her eyes.

It’s kind of nice, and Elvira is purring happily, so she leaves her there. Janis gradually stirs next to her, Cady can hear her stretching and giving a yawn. “Good morning, Cadd-what the fuck?”

Janis scoops the kitten off her forehead in a fit of giggles, then bends down to kiss Cady good morning.

“She was warm, it was like a nice little blindfold,” Cady says in response to Janis’ laughter. “Are you ready?”

“For what?” Janis asks with another yawn as she stops laughing.

“To have your cast off,” Cady giggles in reply. “Your appointment is today.”

“Oh yeah,” Janis says. “When?”

Cady looks to check the clock. “We have about an hour until your appointment.”

Janis pouts. No cuddle time. “Okay.”

“I’ll cuddle you after,” Cady compromises, knowing why she was upset. “Let’s go get dressed.”

Janis looks around anxiously as they enter the hospital again. She’s been scared of them since her father passed away, and her fear was exasperated when her aunt passed away of cancer when she was a bit older.

Cady squeezes her hand to comfort her as she signs Janis in and they’re led back to a room. Janis squeaks in fright when she spies the small saw they’re about to take to her arm.

“Jay, it’s okay, the saw doesn’t hurt,” Cady comforts.

“It’s a fucking saw!” Janis insists, sitting as far away from it as she can.

“It’s just to break the shell of the cast, it shuts off when it hits your skin,” Cady says gently as she brushes her hair from her face. “It just tickles.”

“How do you know?”

“I broke my leg when I was twelve, I had to be transported to a hospital in Nairobi so I could get treatment,” Cady says. “They did the same things to me. You’ll be fine.”

“You broke your leg?” Janis asks with a giggle. “How did you manage that?”

Cady starts laughing. “I was running after a bird, and was looking up at it instead of the ground. I tripped over a rock and fell into a hole.”

Janis thinks that’s about the most on-brand way Cady could’ve possibly gotten an injury as a child. “I can totally see that.”

“Right? I was such a stupid kid,” Cady chuckles.

The doctor comes in then, making small talk as she prepares everything. Cady holds Janis’ hand as the cast is removed, laughing as her eyes go wide at the buzzing sensation.

“Oh,” she mumbles when it’s off.

“I told you, it’s not bad,” Cady chuckles. “Go get your x-rays, loser.”

Janis follows after the doctor to get new scans taken of her arm, leaving Cady with the nurse. “Do you think she’ll want to keep the cast?”

“Probably not, but I do,” Cady says. “Remember how clumsy she can be.”

“Fair enough,” the nurse laughs, wrapping it up for Cady to take home. Janis comes back into the room after a few minutes with a pout.

“They’re not healed enough, I have to get another one,” she grumbles.

“Aww, I’m sorry mpenzi. But now your students will have something else to sign,” Cady says, desperately trying to find a positive.

Janis gives her a weak grin. “You’re so cute. I’m not that upset, this one only goes to my elbow. I’m just not looking forward to three more weeks of itchy arm.”

Cady nods. “I’ll be here to distract you.”

Janis knew she married Cady for a reason.

“Caddy?” Janis calls about a week later from their bedroom.

“Yeah?” Cady calls back.

“Do we have any white spray paint?”

Cady runs into the bedroom, making Elvira jump in fright and scramble away. “What are you up to?”

“Nothing! Promise,” Janis says, raising her hands in surrender.

Cady looks at her suspiciously. “Then why did you ask if we have white spray paint?”

“I want to cover the color of my cast. Spray paint would do that the quickest,” Janis mumbles.

“Oh. Why do you want to cover it up? It doesn’t look bad,” Cady asks.

“No reason. Can I pleeeeeease go buy some?” Janis begs.

“If it’s that important to you, yeah, of course,” Cady says. “But only that. And no graffiti.”

“I’m not twenty anymore, I’m responsible,” Janis insists. Cady raises her eyebrow again. “I’m working on it.”

“I’m kidding. Go buy your paint, Picasso,” Cady says, kissing her and pushing her towards the door.

Janis comes back with her spray paint and a Kit-Kat bar for Cady.

“Hi, lovey,” Cady says from the kitchen. “I made dinner.”

“Ooh, spaghetti,” Janis says happily. “Thanks, babe.”

“You’re welcome,” Cady says, greeting her with a kiss. “Did you get your stuff?”

“Yeah. Got you a candy too,” Janis says, handing the bar over.

“Aww. You haven’t called me Kitkat in a while,” Cady coos as she takes the candy. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome, Kitkat. Now come on, I’m

hungry.”

Once they finish their delicious dinner, Janis changes clothes, dons a protective mask, and heads to the balcony to work on her cast. Cady sits just inside to watch her through the door with their kitten on her lap. It’s a simple process, but Cady likes to watch Janis do any kind of art.

Janis wags her arm around for a few minutes after spraying the whole thing in layers, making the whole thing totally white. You can’t even tell it was purple underneath by the time she finishes.

Once it’s dry, she heads back inside and puts everything away. Cady is confused when she comes back with her paint supplies. Every shade of paint, every brush. But no canvas.

“What are you gonna do now?” She asks confusedly. Janis lies on the couch and sticks her arm out, gesturing for Cady to come sit next to her on the ground.

“I,” she says as she flops down. “Am going to watch you paint my cast.”

“Me?” Cady asks, pointing to herself. “But I can’t paint.”

“Of course you can paint, you just do it differently than I do,” Janis says, gesturing for her again. “You have free reign, do whatever you want.”

“Okay,” Cady says anxiously as she sits down and grabs a brush. “Are you sure?”

“Peanut, it’s a cast, you’re not giving me a tattoo,” Janis giggles. “I want to see what you’ll do, and if I don’t like it I get this off in two weeks. I always like what you make anyway.”

Cady is comforted by this reminder. The last time she had tried to paint she’d only succeeded in making a blotchy mess of the picture frame she had been trying to decorate for Janis’ birthday. Janis loved and used it anyway.

She decides to start with the only thing she knows how to paint pretty well, a lion. She paints a little yellow circle on the inside of her wrist, surrounding it with orange and red stripes like a mane and adding a cute cartoon face in black.

Janis makes conversation and cuddles with Elvira as she works, not even looking at what she’s doing. Cady doesn’t really have a cohesive idea, so she makes little doodles all around like she’s decorating a whiteboard.

By the time she’s finished Janis has been thoroughly decorated with the lion, a rainbow near the bend of her elbow, a rough picture of Elvira, a cursive ‘I love you’ written so Janis can read it whenever she looks at the inside of her arm, a butterfly, several hearts, and a hot dog. All with room left in between for signatures.

“Okay, I’m done but don’t look yet,” Cady says as she runs off.

“Okay,” Janis says in confusion. Cady suddenly comes back from the kitchen brandishing a Sharpie, signing a ‘Caddy’ with a heart next to the cursive message she had painted. “Can I see now?”

“Yeah,” Cady says, biting her lip anxiously. Janis lifts her arm to look, smiling happily at what she sees.

“Cute,” Janis says with a grin. “You did good, Butterfly. I like it.”

Cady gives a quiet sigh of relief. “Good.”

“Come snuggle us,” Janis says, reaching for her and scooting Elvira over to make room. Cady crawls on top of her with a chuckle. “I love you.”

“I love you too.”

Two weeks later, Janis’ arm is finally freed for good and she’s given a warning to watch where she’s walking. She elects to take this cast home, wanting to keep Cady’s artwork.

Cady had told all their friends that Janis was finally getting her last cast off today, so they all decided to get together for a celebratory dinner.

Janis does a little happy dance as she leaves the hospital for what’s hopefully the last time in a long time, making Cady laugh.

“You’re free, Jay, your hand is back!” She calls.

“Yeah! And now I can do this again,” Janis says, running towards her and picking her up. Cady shrieks in surprise, but laughs happily and clings to her as Janis carries her to the car.

“Just don’t strain yourself, you should still be doing exercises and stuff to get your muscles back to where they were,” she says carefully, not wanting her wife to immediately re-injure herself.

“I’m fine, Cads, you’re still tiny. And I’m still buff,” Janis breathes as she sets her down.

“You are. Holding me in your big, strong arms,” Cady flirts as she leans up for a kiss. “Never gets old. But I do wish you’d warn me first.”

“That takes the fun out of it,” Janis teases as she lifts and spins her again. Cady squeals happily. “I love you. Thanks for taking care of me.”

“You took care of yourself just fine, but you’re welcome, love,” Cady replies. “I love you too.”

Maybe I can’t always catch you when you fall, but I’ll always help with the aftermath.

Scooby and the Gang having quirks? That would be cool. Like, four superpowered kids and their probably also superpowered dog are amateur detectives instead of heroes. But they frequently run into other pro heroes, (like Scooby Doo team up) and have to help in anyway they can without breaking any quirk related laws. (Which they probably already do on a daily basis but they dont want to do that around pros, could get arrested.)

The signs had been there for quite a while, but none of them had picked up on them. At the time it seemed like another internet hoax. A baby that glowed in Japan. A woman who could create ice in Italy. But in the age of video editing, no one took them too seriously.

It didn’t become real for the gang until about a year and a half after the glowing baby started the craze of people declaring they had super powers. They had been on a road trip and Fred had been repairing a tire when his lug wrench snapped.

“Oh no,” he moaned. A spare tire he had, a spare wrench no so much. “I think we need to call the auto service."

“Like, let me.” Shaggy made a gesture like he was pulling something from thin air and grasped an identical wrench from the air.

“How did you do that?” Fred asked, impressed. “You’re wearing short sleeves, so you couldn’t have been hiding it up them.”Shaggy shrugged. “Like dunno, man. I want something, I reach for it, and it’s there.”

“Very funny, Shaggy.” Velma plucked the wrench from his hand. “Carbon steel, just like Fred’s old one.”

“You can tell, just by looking?” Fred asked, even more impressed.

“Certainly. It’s not that hard, you just focus on something and you can tell, you know?”

“No.” came the response from all of them.

“Really?” Velma asked, surprised. “It’s really not that hard.”

“It’s not that it’s ‘not that hard’, Velma. It’s flat out impossible.” Daphne explained, leaning out the Mystery Machine’s window.

“No, it’s not. I do it all the time.” Velma argued back.

“Hey, do you think this could be related to that superhero thing?” Fred asked, a note of excitement in his voice. “With people randomly developing super powers?”

“Fred, that’s not a real thing.” Velma rolled her eyes.

“Well, why don’t you test out whether Shaggy’s ‘power’ works while Fred fixes the wheel.” Daphne offered.

“I’m telling you super powers don’t exist.”

“I can’t believe this exists.” Velma said with tonelessly as she looked at the building in front of her

“Like me either.” Shaggy shuddered. “Like in comic books the government creating a registration list for supers always precedes real bad stuff.”

“At least you guys have it easy.” Fred pointed out “Tell them your power, demonstrate, then you get your registration card. Daph and I have to go through a whole battery to figure out if we even have a power.”

“I guess we meet up back here when we’re done.” Daphne gave them all a hug. “Good luck everyone.”

“I have a power!” Daphne ran out, waving a tiny plastic card. “You know how I haven’t been falling into trap doors as much anymore? I have some kind of radar and I’ve been subconsciously sensing the right way to go.”

“That’s great,” Velma said with as much enthusiasm as she could muster for the laws of physics breaking further.

Daphne knew how she felt, though, and didn’t take offense. “Shaggy’s not out yet? I figured he’d be fast, like you.”

“He was. But someone heard Scooby talking and turns out that’s not normal. So now they’re investigating animals developing powers.”

“What even is normal?” Daphne wondered out loud.

“Not the same as it was five years ago,” Velma agreed sadly.

It was about half an hour later before Fred came out. “Hey, where’re the guys?”“Sweet Freedom!” Shaggy and Scooby all but bounded out of the building.

“That took a while. They really weren’t ready for a dog with powers, were they?” Daphne smiled.

“Nah, they took that pretty well. Even had a metal working guy who could make a dog tag for him.”

Scooby moved his tag aside to reveal a new one under it, identifying him as a Class C Shapeshifter.

“Class C?” Velma inquired.

“Minor body changes, can’t change color.” Shaggy shrugged. “What kept us so long was the lectures.” he groaned.

“Lectures? What lectures?” Daphne looked to Velma and Fred to see if they had any idea what Shaggy was talking about.“‘Creating cash is still counterfeiting’, ‘Don’t make enough gold to crash the economy’. And like, it was heavily hinted I should go easy on making jewels and stuff.”

“I guess your power is kind of easy to abuse.” Fred admitted.

Daphne put a hand on Shaggy’s shoulder. “Diamond’s values are artificially inflated so make as many as you want.”

“Like, I’d rather just go get a hamburger or twelve.”

“At least something still makes sense.” Velma muttered.

“This is really bugging you, isn’t it?” Fred asked.

“Of course it is! Superpowers make no sense. Everyone in the world getting random ones? Even less sense. This is not something science can explain.”

“Yet” Fred added. “This isn’t something Science can explain yet. They’ll figure it out. Who knows, maybe you’ll be at the forefront of the discovery.”

Velma gave a weak smile. “You always know what to say, Jones. Come one, let’s get Shaggy his burgers before he wastes away to nothing.”

Shaggy and Scooby were in the back of the Mystery Machine before anyone could say anything else.

The others laughed and headed to the van. Fred was secretly relieved that everything had distracted his friends from the small plastic card in his wallet. For the most part it was the same as theirs, Photo, State ID Number, Date of birth. The only difference was next to Power: was the word ‘None’.

“I suppose it would become inevitable that the bad guys started using their powers,” Daphne sighed as the illusionist was packed into the back of the police car.

“But we solved it anyway.” Velma was grinning. “We just needed to expand on what we previously considered was possible.”

“And, like, we even did it before the heroes showed up.” Shaggy grinned. Probably the most predictable thing in all this were the real life superheroes starting to show up. New laws were being shaped, but right now it was a little bit of chaos. Still, they lived in a world with superheroes and Shaggy couldn’t help but think that was cool.

Two officers approached them. “Looks like everything all wrapped up. We just need to straighten up something on you statements.” The younger one said kindly.

“On your statements you were asked to write down your powers, but one of you didn’t see the need to comply.” The older glared at Fred who shrunk away.

“It’s not that I didn’t want to, I just-”

“Tell me what your power is, now.”

Fred felt his mind haze over. “I don’t have one. I’m just normal.”

The cop raised his eyebrow in disbelief. “Really? That must feel pretty terrible.”

“It does. I feel like dead weight weighing everyone down.”

“For the love of God, Frank, knock it off.” The younger cop shook his partner and the cloud lifted from Fred’s mind.

He snapped back into reality and realized the gang had closed ranks around him. Velma and Daphne were on either side, Shaggy behind him with a hand on his shoulder, and Scooby in front of him, hackles raised. Then he remembered what the cop had made him say and felt shame start to well up inside him. Sure he had been jealous, but it was okay as long as he never voiced those feelings. Only now someone had taken control of his tongue and forced the words out.

“We should be fine, why don’t you kids head on home.” The younger cop waved them off and pulled his partner away.

“You know none of us think you’re dead weight, don’t you Fred?” Daphne asked softly.

“I know. It’s just in my head.” Fred had never felt so small in his life. “Can we go home? Please?”

The Gang never brought the incident up again. They’d never been specially showy with their powers (or quirks as they were coming to be known), mostly out of deference to Velma’s discomfort. Now it was complete radio silence. Fred was grateful on one level that his friends were that considerate over something so amazing, but still wished Officer Frank had never made him say anything. He couldn’t help resenting the man, and had taken to letting Velma do most of the talking to law enforcement. He felt a little cowardly over it, but figured with Scooby and Shaggy scared of everything under the sun he was allowed this.

They had just figured out the mystery of the ‘Banshee’ haunting the old shack and were at Fred’s favorite part - setting the trap.

“Okay, I think all we need is about a foot more twine and I think this trap is set.” Fred looked at his handiwork proudly.

“Like, bad news, Fred. We’re out of twine.” Shaggy said sadly.

“What do you mean out of twine?” Fred asked. It didn’t make sense. Sure Shaggy couldn’t conjure something like an engine, but twine was barely any effort.

“I brought up everything in the Mystery Machine. There’s none left, man.” Shaggy shrugged.

“But can’t you just make more?”

“Oh. I, like, don’t do that anymore.” Shaggy hunched his shoulders a bit.

“What do you mean you don’t do that anymore? That’s your quirk. It’s- wait.” He thought none of them were talking about their powers. What if-? “Did you guys stop using your powers, because of me?”

The silence that met him told him all he needed to know. “Okay, no. We are not doing this.”

“Fred, if our having quirks make you feel bad, then we don’t need them. You’re way more important to us than that.” Daphne insisted.

“Look. Yes, I’m upset that I don’t have a power. I’ll even go so far as to say I’m jealous that you guys do. But at no point did I want you guys to feel like you had to give up your powers. I mean, there’s plenty else to be jealous of. Velma, you’re so brilliant, sometimes I feel like I can barely add two and two together. It’s hard not to feel plain when Daphne lights up a room with her amazing personality and ability to coordinate an outfit to look as amazing on the outside as she is on the inside. And it would definitely be nice to be able to eat twice my body weight and never worry about gaining a pound like Shag and Scooby do.”

“But I would never want Velma to dumb herself down, Daphne to make herself dull, or Shaggy and Scooby to not eat as much. Because those are quirks of being you, and your powers are a part of that now. You’re all so amazing, and now you’re even more amazing, and I don’t want to take any of that away from you. I know my insecurities are all in my head, but if you guys have to give up parts of yourself for me? Then I really am weighing you down and I refuse to let that happen. Ever.”

Before he knew what was happening, Fred found himself in the middle of a group hug.

“Oh hey, What do you know? Looks like we had more twine after all.” Shaggy slipped the couple of feet of twine he had conjured into Fred’s hand.

“Great.” Fred grinned. “Let’s go catch us a banshee.”

“They’re approaching fast. Shaggy and Scooby are about ten yards away. The Banshee is a yard behind them.” Daphne had her eyes shut as she concentrated on the image her radar was sending her.

“Let us know when they’re clear.” Fred held one rope and Velma the other. With Daphne’s quirk, it was easy to avoid accidentally capturing the boys in their traps.

“Now!”

As Shaggy and Scooby sailed past, Fred and Velma pulled and the Banshee was launched off the floor and into a net, which twisted around before being deposited in a hay baler, leaving the banshee trapped and unable to move.

“Call it in, guys. We got her.”

Soon enough the police arrived, along with a token force from the Hero’s Union.

“As you can see, we’ve caught the so-called Banshee terrorizing the area. Or should I say, Lanie Mayfair.” Velma pulled the mask off the so-called banshee. “She claimed she’d never gone near Baker’s Shack for fear of the banshee, but the soil on her shoes was the exact composition of the mud outside the shack. The feeling of dread and fear people reported were actually a low level psychic quirk that inspired those feelings.” That’s why they had to call in the Hero’s Union. Any crime with quirks used had to go through them. “The Banshee’s wail was prerecorded, and played over a series of speakers, including one hidden in the Banshee’s choker.”

“But we checked the records when the reports first came in. No one currently in the area has a quirk like that.” One of the Hero’s Union reps pointed out.

“Because she kept it a secret. I bet if you looked up Lanie’s records her power would be listed as ‘None’. Lanie’s an experienced conwoman. She knew how useful her quirk would be and pretended not to have one during registration. A quirk like that would be easy to overlook since it wouldn’t produce a visible or physical effect.”

“Very good Velma. But you’re wrong on one count.” Lanie grinned nastily. “It’s not a minor psychic quirk.” That was all the warning they got before a wave of pure despair shot out of her.

Fred felt his knees buckling under him. All those insecurities Frank had brought up, his lower self worth, jealousy, and guilt over being jealous, flooded to the surface once more. But he shoved it down. He had laid those demons to rest. He looked up and noticed everyone else wasn’t faring so well, not even the police or heroes. Most looked full of despair, with some weeping openly. Fred thought Shaggy was doing a little better, only to realize that while he didn’t look miserable, he didn’t look anything, as if there was no life in him.

“See how pathetic you are?” Lanie asked haughtily. “How completely wretched and worthless your life is?”

“Don’t you dare say that about any of them!” Fred snarled, rising to his feet. “My friends are the most amazing people on the planet! They’ve - we’ve put away dozens of low end criminals like you away. I mean, look at you. We’ve got you trapped and your quirk certainly isn’t going to help you escape. Seems we’re doing better than you.”Lanie’s jaw had dropped and the others were starting to rouse from whatever stupor they had been put into.

“We need to get to Fred.” Velma, who had been nearest to Lanie, forced herself up and pushed herself off the baler and towards him. On the way she grabbed Daphne and pulled her along. Shaggy had snapped out of his unresponsive state and he and Scooby were closing ranks too. Fred didn’t think he need the protection, she was still stuck in the bale, after all, but he appreciated having his friends by his side.

“You’re finished Lanie, and your two-bit quirk isn’t going to save you,” Daphne snapped, anger clear in her voice.

“Lanie...Mayfair.” One of the fallen heroes was back on his feet, though shaky. He headed towards the gang. “This is your only warning. Release your quirk.”

“No! How are you doing this?! All of you should be lost to despair! How can you even move!?”

The hero lifted his hand and there was a small zap before Lanie started twitching and the feeling of despair vanished completely. “Alchemist, we’re going to need to keep this one sedated.”

“Right.” The other hero touched Lanie gently. “That should keep her out for the next few hours.” She turned to Fred. “Thank you for your assistance. Without your help, this would have been a mess.”

“I just snapped out of it first.” Fred shrugged. “I was just lucky.”

“Fred, you didn’t just snap out of it first, you drove it back.” Velma corrected. “That’s why I wanted to get everyone near you, you were canceling out the effect.”

“How? I mean I don’t have powers, they ran a bunch of tests to make sure I didn’t have powers. How could I cancel out the effect?”

“We do need a better way to test for Psychic quirks,” Alchemist commented while the police officer worked on getting Lanie out of the bale. “If that’s two missed right here.”

“Two? But I-”

“Fred, you do have a power, it’s just the opposite of that witch’s.” Daphne explained. “I could feel it battling hers, driving away the darkness it was putting in my mind. The closer I got to you, the stronger I felt.”

“Like, no wonder we missed it.” Shaggy laughed. “Feeling better when you’re around just sounds like a side effect of being around you.”

“I...have a power?” Fred couldn’t keep the raw hope out of his voice.

“You do indeed.” Taser clapped his hand on his shoulder. “I think it’s obvious that, unlike Mayfair, you took the tests in good faith. But I think you need to get your registration straightened out as soon as possible.”

“Oh, yes. Yes, Sir!”

“I can’t believe this is real.” Fred stared down at the card in his hands. It was identical to the one he’d been carrying around for months, only instead of the word ‘None’ next to Power: it said ‘Morale Boost’.

It wasn’t a flashy or powerful quirk. Certainly not something a hero in a comic book would have. But it was his quirk. Something he had that could help his friends. And he wouldn’t trade it for any other power in the world.

Important things we learned from the ST prequel novel “Suspicious Minds”

What we learned about powers

The ‘potential’ to have powers is (generally) hereditary, however only under certain conditions will these powers manifest (psychological trauma, drugs, or certain psychological conditioning/experimentation is usually how it’s done). If this isn’t done, generally, if any powers still develop they are very weak. An example being Ken who was born with powers along with some of his other family members.

-“I am psychic, always have been ... My family always believed in this stuff... “

-“ He got feelings. Certainty would lodge itself in his chest. He had dreams with snatches of reality mixed in. Flashes of intuition. These came unpredictably—which he always thought was funny—and so he was never surprised if an inkling showed up. Or if it didn’t.”

-“ I get feelings, sometimes fully formed thoughts, that I have a deep sense are true.”

( Hmm...this intuition-thing sounds very similar to how Joyce insisted she knew Will was alive despite seeing his fake-body.)

The younger the child is when experimented or tortured, the more likely they are to yield stronger powers. Even if the same trauma was done on an adult the results would be weaker and would be dependent on that particular stimulus. Alice could only see visions of the future with lsd and electroshock therapy, Terry had what’d you’d call “perfect recall” (which only happened with lsd)- diving into her memories and remembering them perfectly. While El can channel her powers without such things.

-“Rare enough these days, especially in adult subjects...potential”

-“His theory had always been that exceptional abilities could be encouraged under the right conditions. But he’d always had to work with available subjects, none of them clean slates. This child—he could start encouraging the development of this child’s abilities now. In utero. Every day of her life. He’d make sure she was special”

There is a high correlation between above average intelligence and having “potential” (i.e capability to develop powers). In the book, Brenner almost used the terms interchangeably”.

- “genius IQ, potential…limitless.” (El’s ‘potential’ was described as ‘extreme’)

-Terri is described as “above average intelligence”, and “brimming with potential” by Brenner.

-One of Brenner’s nicknames for Kali is “smart girl”.

-Terry’s questioned her roommate Stacy (who got out of the experiment) saying “How she’d fooled anyone into thinking she had average intelligence was beyond Terry—Stacey was obviously the smartest of all.”

-also in other outside cannon material Will is said to be the smartest of all the boys... hmmm...

How the void works

Terry after getting pregnant (temporarily) gains her baby Jane’s/El’s power to tap into the ‘void’. In relation to seeing normal people in the void, Terry learned they will not notice you observing and eavesdropping on them, and they cannot hear or see you (according to the book) ... so we can probably assume they also cannot touch other psychics without fading away, as well (like in the show).

But the void is different if you try this on another psychic, she accidentally summons Kali- and finds out it’s a way for other psychics and only other psychics to have a private place to talk to one another- without anyone realizing. More Proof Will has powers

He can communicate with other psychics using the void (in s1) . If powers are genetic (Joyce probably has Clairvoyance like Ken). And in the show, Joyce’s and Terry’s aunts were both described as “crazy” -which is probably not a coincidence. Also he’s the smartest of all the boys and described by Mr Clarke as “great student.”

In relation to the adults (with powers) both the Xmen and Lord of the Rings were used in reference to them, multiple times. Will’s password for Castle Byers is “Rhadagast”, a character in Lord of the Rings. And in the 1st ep of the series, before Will goes missing , he asks Dustin for his X-men comic- later in reference to El ,Dustin asks “Do you think El was born with her powers like the X-men?” And when Mike says El is “channeling him (Will)”. Dustin says “like professor x”. clearly hinting that they were both born with powers, like the X-men.

Dr Brenner says there are very few people in the world with ‘potential’- ie the ability to develop powers under certain conditions. He encouraged the numbered-children to draw since it would increase the chances of developing powers. This is why we see a picture that El drew on her bedroom wall in s1. And who else really likes to draw- Will?

-“Art the psychologist here claimed, was vitally important for the creative children. Eight was definitely creative.” (Eight at this time, was the most powerful psychic ever, since El wasn’t born yet.)

when experimenting on the adults, they would take monthly blood tests and monitor their blood pressures. In s2 ep 1 they did the same thing to Will. They drew Will’s blood and put it in a vial ,monitored his blood pressure, and like El, recorded his brainwaves.

Ken who was born with powers, is not heterosexual. And since many believe Will is queer it’s probably not a coincidence. Plus Will is referenced to as a “cleric” and a “wizard”. And as a joke his friend says about him, “what wizardry is this?”

Dr Brenner tells a story about an experiment that involves killing rabbits. In the show “Papa” tries to force El to kill a cat. While Lonnie, Will’s dad, forced Jonathan to kill a rabbit, the first time he learned to shoot a gun. And since Will knows how to shoot a gun in s1e1, we can infer he was also forced to kill a rabbit/animal by a father figure-so it’s probably a parallel.

Both Alice and Terry when using their powers had hallucinations of a rainbow, Kali also formed a visual-allusion of sunflowers and a rainbow (implying all 3 have seen this rainbow, as well, when using their powers). And when Will was very young- he drew that ‘rainbow ship’.

-Terri: “Spots bloomed behind her eyelids. Every color ... as the sunlight turned to rainbows” ( p44-45), “The rainbow stayed with Terry for a long while, but eventually it faded and in its place: darkness. A pit.”(p. 48). “streaks of rainbow appeared (p47)”, “Wavy rainbows seemed to radiate from her hand even once she stilled it. (p. 88). “Her eyelids drifted shut, rainbows and sparks flying behind them. (p. 89).

-Alice (who sees visions of the future) : “Snarling, snapping monsters, rainbow lights playing in the air around them (p. 121).

-Kali: “field of yellow sunflowers grew up around them. A rainbow arcing over the golden tops.” (p. 139). “He noticed she’d drawn up there, a rainbow with her colored pencils. Maybe he’d suggest that for the playroom” (the rainbow room we see in s2) (p. 298)

Interesting things we learned about Kali

- Kali at 5 years old, was the strongest of all 10 numbers- who were called the Indigo children (who are in a separate experiment than the adults, like Terry).

- Brenner purposely isolated her from other people. “Eight wasn’t allowed to know there were other children here. They were all ordinary so far. He worried they’d infect her.” (what a sicko- he did that to El too). He says about Kali “Child shows gifts that require isolation from those who might weaken her…Constantly asks for family and to be called by given name…Has stopped asking for her mother…”

- Brenner put her through sleep deprivation, for 13 hours, when she tried to keep a secret from him.

- In another scene after Kali reveals another secret to Brenner, Terry finds her on the bed “bathed in sweat, soaked through her gown” and “sobbing” “tightly gripping the sheets”. What did Brenner do here... am I reading too much into this? I feel like I missed a page or... y’know maybe he’s even more of a monster than I thought. They never explain this? And I’m still not sure how to interpret it 0-0

-Kali loved Terry (El’s mom) and the other adults even saying “I love you”, and referring to them as “family��. And Kali makes a hallucination in order to help them escape, they promise to come back and free her. So in s2 ep7 the “family” that Kali referred to that Dr. Brenner/the government killed was them.

Dr Brenner probably has powers

- Ken who was born with powers describes it as a gut feeling of something that will occur or a belief he knows is true.

-Brenner can simply look at a person and his gut feeling tells him whether or not they have ‘potential’ to develop powers or not. It isn’t always correct but the vast majority of the time it is. He does this throughout the whole novel to everyone he meets.

“male, 5′8″, 180 pounds, white, average intelligence, potential…fulfilled by sitting in a guard booth checking IDs”

“Rare enough these days, especially in adult subjects. The way she’d sensed an opportunity and shown up suggested potential...Potential. She was bursting with it.” (about Terri)

“Funny that his ID contained some of the information Brenner would have wanted if he were looking at himself: male, 6′1″, 195 pounds, white. The rest: genius IQ, potential…limitless.”

What we learned about the Mindflayer

-Well, I was right about the mindflayer having fire powers -so Will will probably get electro-pyrokinesis (along with other powers) like the comic and show hinted at, link here and here.

Alice who sees visions of the future describes the mindflayer as “A monstrous vortex of fire and energy and darkness, tentacles reaching and growing. Growing so big they could eat the sky. Its mouth had a glowing fire of destruction inside it… (p. 243).

My note: Thank you to @softmingukie for tagging me in this! it’s been a boring long weekend for me and I haven’t had motivation to get much done but of course when it comes to these things... #priorities

how tall are you? 160cm, hopefully a little taller in the mornings xD

what colour and style is your hair? my hair colour’s naturally brownish, had a lot of issues with it when I used to be in school =/ and it has natural large wavy curls, giving rise to stark contrasts between my good hair days and bad hair days lolz

what colour are your eyes? brownnnn too

do you wear glasses? yeaaa since I was 8 T.T

Do you wear braces? nope, never worn them before, got pretty good alignment thanks to my mum’s fussing when I was a kid (sometimes it pays to listen to your parents)

what’s your fashion sense? varies with my mood, sometimes it’s super oversized and homely looking... sometimes I prefer neat looking outfits. but generally I’m a huge fan of oversize tops and recently into pastel colours (bought a lavender coloured denim jacket at that)

where are you from and where do you live now? I was kinda ‘Made in China’ but I grew up in Singapore and am still living here

what school do you go to? see this is why I’m feeling old, coz i don’t even qualify for answering this anymore T.T I’m unfortunately and very unwillingly a working adult now

what kind of student are you? I used to be really diligent in primary school (elementary school), then in secondary school (the equivalent of junior high I guess?), I went to a pretty good school and it all went downhill from there hahaha, not really my results but just my attitude towards grades-based stuff in general. I just tried to make sure my grades aren’t diving and whatever extra time I had I will definitely not be studying xD Not discouraging anyone from studying! keep a reasonable target, make sure you aren’t falling behind then you will have justification for spending your one and only youth doing other things you like too

do you like school? this is cliche but when I was in the system it didnt feel all that great, however on hindsight yes school is actually not that bad, I will go back to school again if I had the chance. especially university, I literally had classes 3 days a week T.T gimme back my 3-day work week!!!

favorite subject? Chinese! surprise surprise, but then when I was in Junior College (high school) I didn’t have to take it anymore and then my favourite subject was biologyyyy. If anyone’s interested to know, my English grade was horrible and it was kind of like my “complex” until maybe when I was around 17-18 yo

favourite tv shows? there’s so many how do you even pick a favourite? In the Korean TV world... i used to be a huge fan of running man. I love OCN shows like Vampire Prosecutor and God’s Quiz. And I’m generally a sucker for a good romcom, some of my favourites are like My Name is Kim Sam Soon (hahah oldddd), My Girl (another oldie), Secret Garden, Goblin, Strong Woman Do Bong Soon, Miss Hammurabi, My ID is Gangnam Beauty

favourite movie? animated movies... coz i’m childish like that and anything marvel recently. if i had to pick, i will pick how to train your dragon (the first or the second one); for the record, the HTTYD soundtrack is my favourite OST of all time... hands down (”test drive” anyone?)

favourite books? seriously how do people pick such things? do comics count? if so, Calvin and Hobbes (I wasn’t kidding when I said I’m childish) but if comics don’t count then I’m into poetry books recently, highly recommend I Wrote This For You by Iain S. Thomas

favourite pastime? just walking while listening to music... I’ve read somewhere that when you listen to music while doing a certain thing sometimes your memory links them together and I think it’s true. so I would like my music to help me remember the feeling of sauntering somewhere nowhere...

do you have any regrets? not starting to write earlier... =/

dream job? something that i enjoy doing and that can make a difference to the world. it’s a dream because I dunno if such a job exists for someone like me... although i really shouldn’t be so ungrateful, my current job isn’t all that bad...

would you ever like to be married? I think I would like to be... but as I grow older I realise so many things about the world and sometimes I just wonder whether getting married really should be a priority? that, and also whether anyone will marry me T.T

would you like to have kids? hmm... this is a tough one... as of now I honestly feel like it’s a ‘no’ but I do wonder whether I might regret it later. Maybe adopting? maybe fur babies instead?

how many? i only ever fantasise about having dogs now... 7 of them actually

do you like shopping? yessssss, i never believed in retail therapy when I was younger but now i am a believer...

scariest nightmare you have ever had? someone and me drowning in a car because I drove it horribly into a construction site that had a huge puddle that was more like a lake... T.T either that or not knowing the answer to a math exam question...

Doctor Strange and money! Meta (movie and comic based)

Strange doesn’t create money, according to him, he “transfers” from his bank account (teleport?). Creating money would cause paradoxes and eventually, depending of the scale, it could break the economy.

You can’t “create” money. Even if you create the physical money, you can’t create more money. We live in a globalized system where all the money data is electronic. All the coins and any kind of physical money is registered. They have numbers and if lost, they’ll get a reprint.

Creating physical money to use would be the same as creating fake money because it wouldn’t be “official” to our system.

It must be extremely difficult to create material money since the sorcerer would have to picture every single detail in his mind in order to do any transmutation of something into money.

Creating gold or diamonds to sell isn’t very logic, because that requires magic and stamina, so why not just create the object you want? Creating valuable objects is worth it just in specific occasions (you need a service or something you can’t create/transmute.)

Comic Stephen maybe is richer because he’s A LOT older and already adapted more to his new lifestyle. MCU Stephen still is adapting, I hope they’ll show more details about that in the upcoming movies, such as his diet, his biological changes, his senses, etc.

There are many ways to get money. Strange could steal anything from anywhere, but he doesn’t because of moral reasons.

He can go to casinos and use magic to win, but eventually, he would get noticed. Even if he transformed into someone else, he would need a register and an ID of some kind anywhere he went to, so eventually, he would be tracked down. The same with lottery and gambling in general, win too much and you’ll be noticed, and Strange doesn’t want to be noticed.

People naturally think Strange is a liar, that he’s not a sorcerer and that it’s all about shows and magic tricks, so WHY NOT USE THAT AS A DISGUISE? IT’S A PERFECT IDEA! PEOPLE ALREADY BELIEVE IT ANYWAY! And that’s the main point. If people seriously believed he CAN DO MAGIC and that magic is real, there would be too much of a mess. The greater authorities who know the truth aren’t stupid to mess with Strange, who could destroy the Earth if he wanted, specially, VERY SPECIALLY in the comics. He uses that facade to work at children parties and according to Doctor Strange Gets Hired by Jimmy Kimmel, it a rather comfortable job with a good income.

And think about it, working at children parties is strategic. Strange gets in and out from people’s homes, like a normal civilian and gets to be close to tons of children at once, this is THE EASIEST WAY EVER to track mystic abnormalities. Children would tell him for sure if weird things had been happening with someone they knew, he gets to sense the kids’ mystic potential, check if they were awakened or not, he gets to cast protection spells in the houses, he gets to vanquish creatures who try to harm kids and civilians in general and as a bonus, he gets the leftovers! Because the parents don’t want the kids to eat all the junk food left from the party.

Working as a doctor would be problematic for him because he still has many issues when it comes to day. He said in the comics he wouldn’t accept to work as a doctor if he wasn’t to be the best at what he did. He’s a surgeon, he’s not used to clinic (medicine is sooo freaking specific you can’t imagine), so he wouldn’t be the best clinic out there. It’s not easy for him to deal with people, his extroversion was wounded with time because of traumas and because of all the time he spent alone, learning, thinking and fighting, he had to work his introspection a lot and became a bit awkward when it comes to social interactions. Maybe he fears he wouldn’t be a very good clinic, despite having all the technical qualifications. He would be a great clinic in my opinion, he already is because you have to think clinic in order to be a good surgeon and he was the best, maybe still is. We have to consider that working inside a hospital wouldn’t do him any good. There would be so many memories and Stephen would be constantly tempted.

In the comics, he already worked a veterinarian while in disguise (he loves animals), what brought him a rather good income as well.

He used to be rich but he lost everything he had, including his properties, so when he becomes a sorcerer, the only things he has are his personal objects (laptop, clothes and broken watch) and the uniforms Kamar Taj provided him with.

Stephen can use transmutation to create food, however, he spends stamina/mana in order to do that, and because of it...he gets hungry. He can’t create energy and even if he gets it from another dimension, he has to spend a bit of his own in order to cast spells, just like in RPG videogames. Considering part of the energy always is lost in light, sounds and heat, creating his own food wouldn’t be clever at all since he would spend more energy to create it then he would get by digesting it. This is why he either has to buy food or hunt food.

He wouldn’t starve, of course, he can always go to a forest and get an apple. Normal apple or mystic apple, whatever he needs.

We must remember Stephen doesn’t necessarily needs to BE there to work. He could conjure a clone, use it to do all the service while he saves the universe and then, undo the spell. All the information and experiences the clone lived would be transferred to him, just like we see in Naruto. He could work at 100 children parties in one night and get his income for the month.

The Sanctum and its relics belong to Stephen since it’s his property now, but he won’t sell or rent any of that due to moral reasons. Magic objects must be protected, he would rather increase his collection of artifacts and books instead of selling anything.

There are many references about Stephen working at children parties...and there’s that video with Jimmy Kimmel...so...it might be true!

i finished binging epic tales!! thoughts under the cut (beware of spoilers tho yo)

aight lemme get some critical thoughts outta the way first, it’ll be quick i promise

potty humor has always been a CU staple but the vomit jokes were a bit too much for me tbh? a couple of them especially so

with all due respect to nat faxon i still really miss ed helms as krupp/cap (rip 2017-2017)... nat’s krupp is hella funny tho

i feel like all but three of the New Kids were criminally underused but hey theres still season 2 (and theres a clip of mr. meaner that wasnt in any episode, so it might be coming pretty soon)

told you it’d be quick! on to the good stuff

my favorite parts of this series isnt even the plot or anything, its every time they showed george and harold being their sweet silly little selves.... playing dress up and bouncing comic ideas off each other......it does my cold adult heart good....if anybody makes a compilation vid of all those moments id die for you

that part where everyone is really sad in ep 4 is meant to be funny but when the boys talk about how meeting each other was the happiest moment of their lives and their voices crack so realistically that i had to pause it and gather myself, kudos to their voice actors for a lot of reasons but especially that

also all the sad stuff sad!Cap talked about? like how he started balding in his teens and never feeling truly loved? sound more like things Krupp would be sad about?? 🤔🤔🤔

speaking of Krupp during his Inside Out moment i fully expected Cap to walk in at some point, missed opportunity there

Get to know me tag

Hello everyone! I’m so thankful I was born in the right decade to share my journey online. The fitblr community is a wonderful place filled with wonderful people. I think it’d be pretty cool to get to know each other a bit better so here’s an incredibly long get to know me tag. 1. What is your full name? Ilona Camille R. M. (Already cheating this, but I’m literally the only person in the world with this name and not everyone has to find this blog)

2. What is your nickname? My family calls me Sis (as in sister) but like the Dutch version is Zus

3. What is your zodiac sign? Aquarius (Turned 21 on 02/16!)

4. What is your favorite book series? I loved the Girls series by Jacqueline Wilson. I’m such an adult.

5. Do you believe in aliens or ghosts? Yes.

6. Who is your favorite author? Can I say John Green? I might sound like a basic B but I guess I am.

42. What superpower do you wish you had? Reading minds

43. When and where do you feel most at peace? We have a fairly big yard. In summer I love to go to our poolhouse and have breakfast whilst seeing the sun reflect on the pool, chickens running around and my dogs playing.

44. What makes you smile? My dogs

45. What sports do you play, if any? Zumba, poledancing

46. What is your favorite drink? Virgin Mojito

47. When was the last time you wrote a hand-written letter or note to somebody? Probably in class when we weren’t allowed to use our laptops. My friend and I were probably the only people to have passed a note in college.

50. Have you ever been to a concert? Probably over 20 so far

51. Are you vegan/vegetarian? I’m a vegan/vegetarian/pescotarian. Basically I try to aim for vegan BUT! I live in the middle of nowhere and most restaurants don’t even have a vegetarian option. I adapt but I always try to go for vegan. I did not eat meat for the last 11 years and maybe 5x fish?��

52. When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up? A vet by day, superstar by night. My parents tried very hard to explain it didn’t work like that.

53. What fictional world would you like to live in? Sims 4. It’s so aesthetically pleasing.
