To Bring Them Home, 2/5
Losing Rose only a month after they bonded hurt more than the Doctor could have imagined. Then he discovered heâd lost more than heâd realised, and he was determined to bring them homeâRose and their unborn baby. But how could he do that, without two universes collapsing?
Ten x Rose, pregnancy fic
This story is part of The Course of True Love, following With This Ring. If the end seems familiar, âWhat He Didnât Knowâ was an early version of this scene and I reused a few paragraphs from it.
This was written for the beaches and goodbyes drabble prompts on @legendslikestardustâ, and âMum, Dad, Mickey, and the babyâ prompt on @doctorrosepromptsâ, plus this fanart.

Rose.
Rose pressed her face to the window, watching the sun set over the German countryside. It felt so good to have the Doctor in her head again, even if he was still too far away to actually talk to. The relentless headache that had started the moment the breach closed completely was gone.
Her fingers curled around the edge of the seat at the memory of the first few days in Peteâs World. The pain from the broken bond had left her in a dazeâshe still didnât remember how sheâd actually gotten from Torchwood to the mansion. But finally, sheâd gotten used to it, had learned which pills would soften the pain to a dull ache she could work through.
The loneliness was harder to fight. Waking up every day, expecting the Doctor to be beside her. Reaching for his hand whenever she wanted to show him something.
Tears sprang to her eyes when she remembered the loneliest momentâlooking at the two blue lines on the white stick that announced they were going to have a baby. If she could have had the Doctor with her for just one day out of the last three months, thatâs the day she would have chosen.
She sniffed and wiped the tears away. But Iâm going home now, she reminded herself.
The road curved, and the sun disappeared entirely behind the hills in the distance. Rose glanced at the SatNav mounted on the dash, wondering how much further they had to go. The Doctorâs voice got stronger with every mile, but she thought they were probably only about halfway there.
Rose.
Iâm coming, Doctor, she told him, though she doubted he would be able to hear her. His telepathy was stronger than hers, and it had been three months since sheâd practiced talking to him over their bond.
Tiredness hit her suddenly, as it had been doing for the last two months. âKeep going this way,â she told Pete through a yawn. âIâm gonna sleep for a bit. Wake me up if we get to a crossroads.â
Pete nodded, and Roseâs mum patted her shoulder. âYou rest, sweetheart. Weâll wake you up if we need to.â
Rose shifted in her seat until her neck and head were supported by the headrest. Then she rested a hand on her still-flat belly and let herself drift to sleep, imagining how the Doctorâs face would light up when he found out they were having a baby.
oOoOoOoOo
Twelve hours later, Rose was on the edge of her seat as Pete drove the Jeep straight onto the Norwegian beach. As soon as sheâd seen the first signs twenty miles back, sheâd known where they were going. DĂ„rlig Ulv StrandenâBad Wolf Bay. A message to lead myself here, she remembered.
Roseâs stomach gurgled uncomfortably as the vehicle lurched to a stop, and she took a few deep breaths and a sip of herbal tea before opening the door. She wanted to tell the Doctor she was pregnant; she didnât want him to find out when she threw up all over his Chucks.
The sea breeze blew her hair into her face as soon as she got out of the Jeep, and she was grateful her leather coat kept the wind from cutting through her. The surf pounded against the rocks behind her and seagulls cawed overhead, but those were the only sounds Rose heard as she walked across the wet sand.
Even the Doctorâs telepathic voice had gone silent, and Rose stopped and stared at the ocean, rather than take a step in the wrong direction. She knew this was the right place, but seeing an empty beach instead of the Doctor with the TARDIS sent a shiver of trepidation down her back.
Her left hand clenched into a fist as she fought back her sudden fears, and her right rested on her stomach. Are you ready to meet your daddy, little one? she asked, refusing to believe the day would go any differently.
The air shifted around her, and Rose turned towards the disturbance, dropping her hand as she did. Her fears sharpened when she saw a holographic projection of the Doctor, instead of the Doctor himself.
âWhere are you?â she asked, immediately hating how small and weak her voice sounded.
âInside the TARDIS.â The Doctorâs voice echoed, as if it were coming over a poor mobile connection. âThereâs one tiny little gap in the universe left, just about to close.â
He took a deep breath, the way he did when he was upset, and Rose clasped her hands in front of her as the truth became painfully clear. He hadnât found a way to bring her home after all.
âAnd it takes a lot of power to send this projectionâIâm in orbit around a supernova.â He paused and tried to smile at her, but she could feel his grief over the bond. âIâm burning up a sun just to say goodbye.â
Rose stared at the hologram of her bondmate and shook her head. She heard his voice, but her heart struggled to accept the words.
âYou look like a ghost,â she told him, needing to say something so the word âgoodbyeâ wasnât lingering on the air.
âHold on.â The Doctor pointed his sonic screwdriver at something Rose couldnât see. Â
Finally, he was standing in front of her, looking as real as possible. Rose crossed the remaining distance between them and reached for his face. âCan Iââ
The Doctor shook his head and blinked back tears. âIâm still just an image, love,â he told her, his voice raspy. âNo touch.â
Rose dropped her hand and nodded quickly, swallowing back the tears that threatened. âCanât you come through properly?â Maybe he couldnât bring her home, but if he could come through, they could build a life hereâthe two of them and their baby. She brushed her hand over her belly at the thought, holding her breath as she waited for his answer.
The muscle in the Doctorâs jaw twitched. âI tried to find a way, Rose, but no matter what I did, two universes would collapse.â
Rose reached up to smooth away the furrow between his brows before she remembered, no touch. In his voice, she could hear the long hours spent in the library, looking for a way to bring her home. The need to soothe his pain made her heart ache, and she had to press her lips together to hold back a whimper.
After they took a moment to compose themselves, the Doctor looked around, like he was checking out their surroundings. âWhere are we? Where did the gap come out?â
Another gust of wind came up and blew Roseâs hair in her face. She pushed it back, then answered the Doctor. âWeâre in Norway.â
âNorway.â The Doctor nodded. âRight.â
Rose smiled at him. There was something so familiar and Doctor-ish about the way he pretended this was all going according to his plan. âAbout fifty miles out of Bergen,â she elaborated. âItâs called DĂ„rlig Ulv Stranden.â
The Doctorâs eyes went wide, and he reached out as if to shield her, before he remembered he was just a projection. âDalek?â he asked, his voice sharp and fearful.
âDĂ„rlig,â Rose repeated, enunciating the g. âItâs Norwegian for âbad.â This translates as Bad Wolf Bay.â
They shared another pained smile. How could she have seen everything, and only given them a way to say goodbye? What was the point of being a goddess of Time if you couldnât bend reality to your will?
Rose clamped down on her bitterness and asked the most important question. âHow long have we got?â
The Doctorâs Adamâs apple bobbed. âAbout two minutes.â
A sob caught in Roseâs throat. Sheâd been so certain when she heard his voice that she was going home, and instead they only had time for the briefest goodbye.
But if they only had two minutes, she wouldnât waste it talking about things that didnât matter. âI love you,â she told the Doctor, keeping her voice as steady as possible.
âOh, Rose.â The Doctorâs hands flexed at his sides, and the muscle in his jaw worked. âI love you, too.â
âAm I ever going to see you again?â
âYou canât, love,â he whispered, and she saw tears glistening in his eyes.
Rose closed her eyes and ran her hand through her hair as she considered her next words. This was not how sheâd planned to tell the Doctor he was going to be a father, but who knew how long it would take her to find a way across the Void?
âI see the whole family came,â the Doctor said after a brief pause.
Rose smiled. He couldnât have given her a better opening. âThereâs five of us now,â she told him. âMum, Dad, Mickey⊠and the baby.â
âYouâre notâŠ?â
Even though their bond was weak, separated as they still were by the Void, the Doctorâs devastation was strong enough to push its way across dimensions. Rose gasped when it washed over her, and in an instant, she knew what she had to do.
She licked her lips, then pasted a smile on her face and shook her head. âNo.â Rose attempted a laugh. âItâs Mum. Sheâs three months gone. More Tylers on the way.â
The lie was sour in her mouth, but she told herself she was denying her baby to protect them. If the Doctor knew what heâd lost, he would force his way through this tiny crack and bring them both home, and damn the universes it would destroy.
The Doctor narrowed his eyes and his forehead creased, and Rose held her breath. Had he believed her?
âI miss you,â she blurted out, hoping to distract him. âIs there⊠the bond. My headâs been killing me.â
Remorse pinched the Doctorâs features. âIâm so sorry, love. If Iâd known, I never would haveâŠâ
Rose slashed her arm through the air, cutting him off. âDonât you dare,â she said fiercely. âI donât regret itâI never have. If weâd only had a day together before we were separated, it would have been worth it.â
The Doctor breathed out a shaky laugh. âRose Tyler,â he said, âyou are brilliant.â
Rose tipped her head back, feeling a bit of her spirit return. âI am,â she agreed. âAnd do you know what Iâm going to do with that brilliance? Iâm gonna find a way to come home.â
âYou canât, Rose.â The Doctorâs shoulders were slumped, his mouth turned down in defeat. âItâs impossible.â
She snorted softly and raised an eyebrow. âWhenâs that ever stopped us?â she challenged. âThereâs still a Torchwood open for business on this planet, and weâre already studying the old dimension hoppers.â
âRoseâŠâ
She shook her head quickly. âNope. Nothing you say will stop me, Doctor. I promise Iâll be careful, but Iâm not staying here.â She tried to smile, but she suspected it looked more like a twisted grimace. âI promised you forever, remember?â
The Doctorâs mouth opened and closed a few times, and finally he nodded. âJust be careful, love,â he begged.
The air shifted again, and Rose knew their time was almost over. She stepped closer to the Doctorâs hologram and raised her hand to his face. Even though she couldnât touch him, it just felt right to try.
âI love you.â She projected all her love and adoration over the bond, and was rewarded when he drew a sharp breath.
He leaned forward as if to press his forehead to hers, and Rose pushed herself up on her toes like she would if he were really there. Then a wave of love swept over her, and she cried out as her eyes flew open.
The Doctorâs eyes were dark with grief and tears as he looked down at her. âRose Tyler, I love you.â
The final syllable came through faintly as the Doctor disappeared from the beach. A moment later, sharp pain stabbed through Roseâs temple, telling her the bond had broken again.
Rose curled in on herself, with her arms wrapped around her waist. Tears welled up inside her, and she let them fall onto the sandy beach.
A moment later, she felt a hand on her elbow, and she turned into her motherâs waiting embrace. âItâs all right, sweetheart,â Jackie crooned as Rose sobbed on her shoulder. âJust let it all out.â She paused for a moment, then asked, âDid you tell him?â
Rose sniffed and shook her head. âI started to, but he looked so⊠I just couldnât tell him heâd lost his whole family, again.â She stepped back and wiped the tears from her eyes. âSo I told him it was you having a baby.â
Jackie snorted. âNo, ta,â she said. âMoving universes is enough stress for my lifeâI donât need to add chasing after a toddler to that.â
Rose pressed her lips together and tried to swallow back the tears, but a few leaked out. âI wanted him to know,â she said hoarsely. âI wanted to tell him. I donât want to do this without him.â Her voice broke on the last word.
Jackie wrapped her in another tight hug. âYou may not have him, but you wonât be alone,â she whispered fiercely. âAnd as soon as this babyâs born, weâll start looking for a way to send you both back to your Doctor.â

The Amazing wilderness survival stories
As detailed in The National, in January 2006 Megee was driving through Australia's Northern Territory. Three guys down him, claiming they had no petrol. In fact, they had no scruples, being robbers who slipped a drug into Megee's beverage, robbed him of virtually everything while he was passed out, and threw him in a shallow grave to die.
After Megee awoke, he was alone, had no working phone, no water, no food, no shoes, and no hope. After two weeks, he had been forced to start drinking his own urine, and did not eat anything before the fifth day. He eventually found a dam with water and such culinary delights as raw frogs, lizards, and leeches. Later, after several rounds of heat exhaustion and dehydration, he discovered a much better dam with more water. He remained there for nearly two weeks, but man cannot live on tiny insects alone, and Megee began to waste away. Everything from getting water to just waking up and walking around took massive effort.
Finally, after 71 days, Megee was rescued by nearby station-hands, who just happened to be surveying the area. By that time, he had dropped from 230 pounds to a skeletal 99 pounds, which makes his survival nothing short of a miracle.
, he was accidentally lowered over a super-deep crevasse. Gravity started pulling Yates toward the cliff, and he had to cut the rope to avoid careening to the ground below. This, however, sent Simpson careening to the ground below, and Yates finally returned to the campsite overcome with grief and guilt.
But Yates had saved his friend's life. Simpson crashed through soft snow, breaking his fall enough to keep him both alive and conscious. Then he crawled 6 miles back to camp (it took him about 60 hours to do so), relieving Yates of the feeling that he had just brutally murdered his friend.
Together with the broken leg, Simpson dropped about 42 pounds on the mountain. But he came outside living, plus he got to write a book and make a film about his ordeal, which are all superior alternatives to death.
, after killing a few Germans in a firefight, Baalsrud began running in the direction of Sweden, a neutral country where the Nazis couldn't get him.
He walked for nearly a week nonstop, and considering one of those Nazis shot him in the foot, that's pretty impressive. But then, an avalanche sent him plummeting 300 feet, catapulting his story from "impressive" to "legendary." He awakened concussed but kept stumbling in what he hoped was the direction of Sweden. He walked alone in the deep, blowing snow, for two months. Eventually, he stumbled upon the village of Furuflaten, where the neighborhood Nazi resistance group nursed him back to health. Then they brought him to some Lapps tribesmen in the Revdal mountain, who put him on a sled and whisked him into Sweden.
Baalsrud had survived, though he weighed about 80 pounds when he came in Furuflaten. Plus, he was so frostbitten he dropped nine toes, which he had to amputate himself. But he dwelt, and proceeded to be knighted by the Queen of England. Time took him away in 1988, at age 70, long after both Nazis and the components didn't do so.
, they were halfway up the 1,200-foot Cross Couloir when a snowstorm came a day earlier than anticipated. They would have loved to climb back down, but the deep snow, blinding storm, and incoming darkness made that impossible. They couldn't climb down once at the peak either, since it was pitch-black and they couldn't see any paths. With 50 mph winds and temperatures reaching -20 degrees Fahrenheit, the pair resorted to rubbing their bare feet in each others' armpits to keep frostbite at bay.
They lived the night, starting their descent the following morning. Problem is, they moved the wrong way, and had no cell reception to boot. They were also without food and were becoming increasingly soaked with cold water by the step. Their compasses did not work either, thanks to the iron in the nearby stones interfering with the compass magnets. When their waterlogged lighters failed to start a fire, that's when Matt uttered what nobody wants to say or hear: "Tommy, we could die out here."
They were succumbing to hypothermia when a chopper came ... and then flew away. The boys finally gave up and tearfully accepted departure. Luckily, the chopper returned an hour later and picked them up. Maybe the chopper pilot could have dropped them a note explaining the chopper needed to refuel.
, "I can do this. I'm not going to die out here. I'm not that kid. No one's going to write a book about me since I will make it."
Mazzaferri tried to follow his footprints back to a shelter (without glasses, that was all he could see), but darkness and the cold compelled him to hunker down for the night. Knowing hypothermia could kill him if he slept, Mazzaferri would rest for 20 minutes, get up and exercise to keep from going numb, then rest another 20 minutes. In the morning, he set off more hiking, but finally lost track of his own footprints. Seeing no additional options (or anything else, really), he began after deer tracks, which miraculously led him back to his own prints.
Eventually however, he ran out of tracks again and couldn't tell which direction to go. Luckily, he heard a plow crew across a freezing river. Despite being dangerously cold already, Mazzaferri followed the sound, swimming across the river to join his new best friends.
The Jewish Chronicle that for three weeks, he just did what he could to survive. He lit bug spray to make a makeshift flamethrower and ward off a jaguar. He swiped eggs from nests and ate them raw (based on the egg's progress, this was either breakfast or dinner). But overall, he ate very little, and has been regularly attacked by all sorts of nasty creatures. One day it had been fire ants, then a few days after he battled termites. After all, as he , "I'd have eaten human flesh. With desire at that level, it is just energy. It is beyond disgust."
Amazingly, his rescue happened almost completely by accident. Kevin, his rafting buddy, had survived and was searching for him but thought he had failed. So he landed his ship to turn around and just happened to land exactly where Ghinsberg had collapsed. That is the definition of fortune, although the grit and toughness needed to last that long is nothing short of Hollywood-worthy, so Daniel Radcliffe played in the film.
) so completely remarkable.
On August 13, 2011, Evans and his family took a Cessna plane to their new home in Anvik, Alaska. However, the skies turned cloudy, obscuring the pilot's view. They ended up crashing into a mountain, killing the pilot and another passenger instantly. When Evans came to, he found his spine, legs, jaw, and feet were broken, plus he had lost teeth. Worse, it initially seemed like his entire family was dead. They were not, but they were seriously injured. Bones were broken, his pregnant wife was coughing up blood, his son's skull had been crushed under the airplane's floorboards, and his daughter's intestines were "severed." Meanwhile, Donald could barely walk but was doing his best to crawl to each family member and help as best he could.
Night fell, the temperature dropped, and no rescuers came. Donald worked to keep everybody awake, as falling asleep in weather this cold might have killed them. But after 15 hours, he had given up hope. He fed his family some oranges as a previous meal, and then let them sleep. The National Guard had had other plans -- a helicopter came just a couple of minutes later to collect everybody. Amazingly, they all survived, including their unborn kid.
he told ABC News was his "survivor man routine." This involved drinking puddle water, no matter how dirty and disgusting it might've been. Regrettably, his difficulty with leaving the mountain proved harder to solve, as he kept going in circles and after rivers that led nowhere.
From the fourth day, he had reached his limit. He was cold, weak, tired, starving, and was running out of ideas. He found his way into a stream and began carving out a goodbye to his wife on a piece of wood. He also spelled out HELP using tree needles, one final stab at making certain his goodbye wouldn't be necessary.
The following morning, he ate a dandelion for his first food since becoming lost, and shortly after that a search team finally found him. They'd been searching for him all weekend, in possibly the largest search-and-rescue mission of the year. The moral of the story: Get your bait before you go fishing.
, was hunting moose in Western Ontario with only a bow and arrow for business. On the morning of September 26, 2011, he readied his bow and began some moose calls. Unfortunately for his search, no moose showed up. Unfortunately for his health, a black bear did. When the bear saw him, Prokulevich shouted for him to leave. The bear did not listen and ran to attack him.
Prokulevich tried to shoot an arrow at the bear, who chomped down on his arm and stopped that fantasy. The two began to wrestle, and the bear bit down on his neck. Prokulevich, spurred by thoughts of leaving his son behind, got some energy. He stabbed the bear's head with an arrow before it gave up, and then the would-be moosehunter hightailed it out of there, instantly boating back to camp, where he had been taken to an emergency room.
As it happens, Prokulevich had gotten super lucky. The bear's bites were inches away from puncturing his lung and damaging his spinal cord, so while he was certainly injured, he wasn't as mortally wounded as he could have been. Plus, now he has a story his son will never tire of hearing.
, lightning struck out of nowhere shortly after the storm began. While it knocked his friends back and slightly injured them, it struck Austin directly, shredding his clothes and leaving his muscles, as he put it, "taut as bowstrings." The strike had also left a long scar from his head to his feet, such as Harry Potter's mark taken to the extreme.
Had Austin been lonely, the lightning likely would have murdered him. His heart stopped for 30 seconds, he lost control of his breathing, and his blood-deprived legs were soon turned into a deep shade of purple. Luckily, his friends were there and could perform CPR to get his heart started again, and rescue breathing to get oxygen flowing regularly. They also massaged blood back into his thighs. They still were not working properly when a rescue squad came roughly 90 minutes later, so they needed to carry Austin down the mountain.
After about 90 more minutes of descent, Austin began to regain use of his legs. After 18 hours in the hospital, he was nearly good as gold. Within a month all his muscles were back to normal, and the only evidence he had of his experience was a comprehensive, harrowing story.

Sport Week features KP Boateng, wife and son on cover
German-born Ghanaian international Kevin-Prince Boateng together with his wife Melissa Satta and son, Maddox-Prince Boateng, has been featured on the cover of âSport Weekâ in Italy.
The Boateng family recently returned to Italy after spending weeks in self-isolation in Turkey when the player was spending a 6-month loan spell at Super Lig side Besiktas.
Now in Italy, the Fiorentina forward and his family remain busy despite the inactivity of football as a result of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
KP Boateng, his wife, and son have been used as on the cover of Italian Magazine âSports Weekâ which was released in Italy today.
The former AC Milan superstar and his family wore the jerseys of BeĆiktaĆ to take a beautiful photo for the cover.
Though KP Boateng had a good spell with the Turkish side, his future remains uncertain with the two parties failing to reach an agreement over a permanent switch.
The 33-year old in his short stay with the Black and Whites made 6 appearances and found the back of the net twice.

KP Boateng and family confirm return to Italy amidst Covid-19 crisis
German-born Ghanaian international Kevin-Prince Boateng and his family have finally returned to Italy, footballghana.com can report.
The Besiktas forward and his family has been staying indoors in Istanbul as a precautionary measure to ensure they do not contract the deadly Coronavirus disease.
In several interviews, wife of KP Boateng, Melissa Satta has stressed that living in Turkey under lockdown has been very difficult as she stressed that it will be better to get to Italy.
At that time, Italy was one of 3 countries known to be the worst hit by the COVID-19 and hence a flying back into the country was impossible.
Due to an improvement in the situation, the Boateng family has managed to return to their home in Italy.
âBack in Milan we start with a little gardening!â, Melissa Satta wrote on Instagram to confirm.
She added, âMy life is in Milan, it is not easy here. I explained the situation to my son. It is good that even the little ones know the truth."
Italyâs fight against the pandemic has yielded results with the latest numbers from the government showing a drop in the number of deaths (552), new cases (1,195), intensive care requirements, as well as a significant increase in people recovering.
KP Boateng and his family are expected to stay in Italy but will return to Turkey if authorities announce that it is safe for the Super Lig to resume.

Besiktas grant K.P Boateng permission to return home
Turkish giants Besiktas have granted Ghanaian forward Kevin Prince Boateng permission to return home. The German born Ghanaian has been in quarantine for the past two weeks following the suspension of the Turkish Super Lig due to the spread of coroanavirus. The team had earlier rejected his request to leave the country due to inactivity. But the Turkish Football Federation have announced that all foreign players, who want to leave for their home countries be given the chance to go home. Besiktas have asked the on-loan Fiorentina star to make sure he is available when he is recalled to camp. Boateng and his family are expected to leave Turkey in the coming days for Germany, where the situation looks controllable. The 32-year old joined Besiktas in the January transfer window from Fiorentina and has already settled, after three goals in six games. source: https://ghanasoccernet.com/

Besiktas forward KP Boateng quarantined in Turkey
German-born Ghanaian international, Kevin-Prince Boateng has been quarantined in Turkey, his wife, Melissa Satta has confirmed.
The self-isolation of the Besiktas forward is as a precaution after Galatasaray head coach Faith Terim tested for the novel Coronavirus (Covid-19).
Prior to this, Besiktas and Galatasaray were involved in a match in the Turkish Super Lig which ended goalless before the league was suspended.
To ensure that no player has contracted the virus, players of the two clubs have been put under quarantine and their samples taken for testing.
In a video call, Melissa Satta narrated, âMy husband was called to take the test because someone from the Turkish championship tested positiveâ.
She added, âAbout the matter here, and little has been said about it. - admitted Satta in connection - Maybe she was underestimated. It was thought that it was an Italian problem and instead it got everywhere, even hereâ.
Due to protocols that have been put in place, KP Boateng is expected to be observed for the next 14 days and will only be allowed to reunite with his family if he is cleared.
