Relena Peacecraft

She made the mistake of having a crush on the serial killer/child soldier lead character, and also wearing pink. Like, she's one of the OG characters to have a "-bashing" tag on FFN and then AO3. The other half of the yaoi pair was a boy with a butt-length braid, a fake American name, and a priest outfit. Poor Ms Peacecraft never stood a chance.

Relena is a very competent and accomplished character with her own plot lines and goals in a series full of complicated political and military upheavals. The main characters are 5 teenage boys who pilot Gundams, and each boy has at least one potential female love interest counterpart (all of whom are interesting characters in their own right). Relena is the counterpart to the main pilot, Heero. Her importance to Heero and the story is substantial enough that yaoi shippers often feel the need to kill her off specifically, while other female characters get to play the roll of supportive fujoshi friend to the yaoi ships instead. The hate for Relena was truly vitriolic in the height of the yaoi fandom in the mid 90s/early 00s, so much so that the memories of her tortures live on in my memory to this day…

she suffers the indignity of being an implied LI in the most fujobait season of gundam ever and for that she had to die (in fanfiction) just look at any 1x2x1 fic on any platform, be it ffn or private website or anywhere, she gets vilainized to hell and back, if relena does not win this fuckign poll i'm goign to jump off a bridge she was villainised SO FUCKING HARD have you ever tried looking for any 1x2 fic that doesn't have relena bashing. it's impossible. she deserves a hefty victim's compensation from Big Yaoi is all i'm saying.

Ada Wong

A mysterious and capable agent of a shadowy bioterrorism organization, she has a romance with government agent Leon S Kennedy spanning multiple games and movies. No one knows her true loyalties, but Leon trusts her. But, who cares! Leon and Chris argued once and that means they must be in love. Ada has also been convicted of fandom high crimes of lying to the fandom's babygirl and doing morally grey things while not being a man. 

lots of explicit romantic chemistry with leon kennedy but large parts of the fandom treat her like a heartless monster who only hurts him and uses him for her goals so that they can pair him with a guy (its hard to be a girlboss)

She has a will-they-won't-they relationship with Leon in Resident Evil 2, 4, and 6. But since m/m ships like Chris/Leon and Luis/Leon are really popular, she's usually written out of fan content completely or, in rare cases, she's seen as a "mean lesbian" or antagonist to Leon's potential yaoi moment. I love her so much she doesn't deserve it :(

We Won’t

For @gwblockparty​‘s Rewrite the Romance challenge!!

I started out with a typically-tropey police procedural romance novel, except that it was a wlw book, and this fic has now taken on a complete life of its own and nowhere even remotely resembles the original synopsis.  In fact, it’s now a 50k monster, and I fully intend to subject all of you to it.  When it’s finished.

It falls in the same verse as Don’t You Know, but Duo and Wufei make only the briefest of appearances, later in the fic.

In the meantime, enjoy the prologue - there was no way to finish the whole thing before the deadline.

Hilde sighed into her beer as she glanced at the clock over the bar. She was uncharacteristically early, and now she was stuck at a small side table, nursing a lukewarm beer, waiting on a girl she’d never met.  Her Uncle Howard had called her two days before, in the wake of her promotion, under the pretense of congratulations.  

But what he’d really wanted was to ask for a favor.

“Hey kiddo,” and Hilde had rolled her eyes good naturedly. Thirty-three years old and everyone still called her kiddo. Didn’t matter that she’d been a cop for twelve years, or that she regularly held her older, larger brothers down while they begged for mercy. Nope. She was ‘kiddo.’ Uncle Howie was usually the least egregious offender, which meant he wanted something.

“There’s this girl-”

Ever since Hilde and Dorothy had broken it off - even though the tall, blonde woman had been universally hated by Hilde’s entire family - there had been no end of suggestions and set ups. Everyone seemed to think Hilde was heartbroken instead of relieved, and no amount of denial or reassurance seemed to convince any of them. Especially her mother, Uncle Howard’s sister.

“Aw, not you too Uncle Howie. I am fine, I’m not interested-”

“Would you just shut up and listen to me for a minute?”

Howard had been her mentor since the start of her career. Hilde’s dad was a cop. Her granddad had been a cop, before he’d died in an domestic violence call gone wrong. But only Uncle Howard had made Detective, and only Uncle Howard had worked in the NYPD, rather than their smaller, hometown police force.  

And now Hilde had made Detective, in the NYPD. Obviously his advice had paid off.  

She bit off the remainder of the exasperated sentence about how she was perfectly happy being single, and certainly wasn’t looking to be set up with any random girls he might know.

“She’s the daughter of your Aunt Nancy’s friend, Maureen, you remember her? She died a few months back. The girl called me, sounded terrified. She needs someone to talk to, says she’s in trouble and she doesn’t trust anybody, doesn’t know where to turn. I want you to talk to her.”

Of course she’d said yes. She practically owed her career to her uncle. His advice and guidance had gotten her exactly where she wanted to be, and he had never steered her wrong. And she’d become a cop in the first place because she wanted to help people. Meeting unknown women in shady bars wasn’t exactly what she’d had in mind, but it wouldn’t be the first time.  It likely wouldn’t be the last, either.

So here she was, at Continental - some kind of hole-in-the-wall punk rock nightmare in East Village - with a sweaty beer in her hand, waiting to meet someone named Relena.

Howard had described her as young, blonde, and pretty, and Hilde was still half-convinced he’d set the whole thing up as a blind date. She sounded like just Hilde’s type, if she were being honest. But he’d sworn the girl had information on the Peacecraft family, and if she really did, it would be the coup de grace of Hilde’s entire career, just days after she’d been promoted.

Just as she lifted the bottle to her mouth, the bar door swung open, and a young women, who could not have looked more out of place if she’d tried, walked in, glancing around nervously.

Hilde pegged her for late twenties, probably just a few years her junior, quiet and modest. Approximately 5’5”, maybe a buck fifty, and dressed like nothing so much as a kindergarten teacher. Plum colored pants, a floral blouse, and a fucking cardigan. She could not have belonged less in a bar that only took cash and was known for throwing patrons out on their asses when they ran out.  As she got closer, it was apparent that the girl was very pretty - honey blonde hair and blue eyes - and so wholesome it was giving Hilde cavities.

What on earth could this girl possibly know about New York’s most infamous organized crime family?

Hilde lifted her hand in an aborted wave, lips twitching at the blonde’s look of immense relief as she picked her way across the bar to take the seat across from her. Hilde sat the bottle down on the hightop, scrubbing the moisture off her hand on the leg of her jeans and held it out.

“Hilde Schbeiker.”

The other woman accepted the handshake, a smooth, soft hand gliding over her own slightly-calloused one in a way that made her nerves sizzle.

“Relena Darlian. It’s nice to meet you.”

She didn’t make it sound nice to meet her. The words were flat, and the look on her face was very nearly haunted, and Hilde suddenly understood why her Uncle had been so adamant that someone he knew and trusted meet with the girl - the woman - across the table from her.

“Welcome to Continental,” Hilde gestured expansively at the dingy interior of the bar, one she’d met informants at before, but had clearly misjudged for this particular meeting. “Can I interest you in some bugles? Ants on a log? Combos?”

Relena stared at her blankly, and Hilde sighed.  “Never mind.  Old SNL skit.”  She shook her head. Either Relena was younger than she thought, or Hilde was lamer than usual.

Probably both.

Her humor had always been a little bottom of the barrel. It came from growing up with a bunch of brothers, or so her mother claimed.

The waitress appeared at the table like magic and Hilde shook her half empty beer bottle in response. It was late afternoon on a weekday, so the bar was practically empty. Nodding, the waitress raised her eyebrow at Relena, who glanced at the grimy bar, the grimier patrons, the sticky tabletop, and Hilde’s beer.  

“Cranberry vodka?” She asked, hesitantly.

The waitress didn’t roll her eyes, but Hilde could tell she wanted too as she strode away without a word, gum snapping. Hilde grinned around her beer bottle.

“Sorry,” she apologized, “Howard didn’t really tell me much about you when he called.  I’d have chosen a better bar.”

Relena shrugged in response, her hands folded in her lap. “It’s fine. I’m not particular.”

Hilde very much doubted that was true. The blonde across from her practically screamed high maintenance, making her exactly Hilde’s type. Dorothy had only been the latest in a string of relationships with beautiful, fussy, impractical women.

“How do you know Howard?” Relena asked, leaning forward slightly in her seat, hands still tucked into her lap.

“He’s my uncle,” Hilde answered, easily, and something in Relena’s posture relaxed, relief apparently in the way her shoulders relaxed, the way some of the tightness left her eyes, and Hilde blinked in surprise.  “You didn’t know?”

“No, I- no. My mother.” She stopped and shook her head. Paused to gather her thoughts. “My mom died about 8 months ago, and your aunt,” Relena said the word ‘aunt’ as though it were a question, prompting Hilde to nod at her encouragingly, “was her best friend. Nancy told me to call if I ever needed anything and…” she trailed off again, clearly unsure of herself.

Aunt Nancy had died nearly three years ago, so it must have been a close relationship if Relena had felt she could still call Howard for help.

Whatever trouble she was in, Hilde certainly didn’t want her blurting it out like this, in the middle of a bar with a questionable reputation. She also very much didn’t want Relena advertising Hilde’s career choices - she still used this bar to meet informants, after all. Which is why she’d shown up in jeans and a jacket, sans her badge and police-issued sidearm.

Not that she was unarmed.

Out of the corner of her eye, Hilde could see the waitress returning, beer bottle and bar glass in hand, just as Relena opened her mouth to continue.

“Aunt Nancy is a matchmaker from way back,” Hilde interrupted with a laugh, “but as long as we just have the couple of drinks and I have something to tell her when she asks, it’s not a big deal.”

Relena stared at her in puzzlement, until the drink was plunked down in front of her, sloshing slightly over the edges, Hilde’s beer dropped off as well. Hilde handed the waitress a twenty, and she wandered off again to get her change.

“It’s a cash only bar,” Hilde explained, which did nothing to ease Relena’s confusion. Hilde leaned forward, grinning, and Relena met her reluctantly across the table. “This is not a good place for a private conversation,” Hilde hissed in her ear, then leaned back. “But if it goes well,” she continued in a normal tone, “maybe we can take this somewhere more cozy afterwards.”

Hilde was not accustomed to coaching a newbie through this. That would be Duo’s area of expertise. He could talk to anyone, could talk anyone into anything.  

At this point, Hilde just wanted to get through the one drink, stay long enough for appearances’ sake, and then hustle Relena into a cab and back to her apartment, where they could talk freely. The other woman was clearly unaccustomed to subterfuge, or discreetly passing information, or anything that would be remotely helpful in this situation.

Relena still looked mildly confused, but willing to cooperate, lifting her drink to her mouth and grimacing as she swallowed.

“Cheap vodka,” she gasped out, as she sat it back down on the table in front of her.

Cheap vodka - cheap drinks, actually, and shots in particular - was what Continental was known for. Hilde snickered.

“So Uncle Howard told you about me?” Hilde questioned, and Relena nodded. “Well he didn’t tell me anything about you, except your name. What do you do?”

Relena smiled, a real, genuine smile of enjoyment, and it transformed her face from merely pretty to glowing.  “I teach at BNS.”

Christ on a cracker, she really was a teacher.

“Oh? What grade?”

“Kindergarten.”

What the hell could a kindergarten teacher from Brooklyn know about organized crime?

Hilde was going to kill Howard. She lifted the beer bottle to her lips and drained nearly half the contents in one go.

This was going to be a fucking disaster.

I see you scratching your head. Calendars? What do you mean calendars? June only has one calendar, it only has 30 days!

Well I like having options. I like switching between Netflix, Hulu, and Discovery Plus depending on what I’m in the mood for, because that way there’s so many movies and TV show options, and I end up watching nothing because there’s too many options. Options give life variety, and so why wouldn’t I want y’all to have options?? This isn’t your run-of-the-mill 30 days of Pride challenge here.

(Or maybe it is, I haven’t done one of these since my days writing fic on Livejournal.)

Instead of having one set of prompts and a calendar to follow, we have three of them! Three sets of prompts to choose from! Hurray variety!

And the spreadsheet cells together make up the rainbow, because who doesn’t love rainbows???

How do these prompts work?

So you have Options A, B, and C. Options A and B have your typical word prompts, things like “shoreline” and “moonlight”. You take that word, and you use it as inspo for your fic or art piece, keeping in mind that it has to do with LGBTQ+ themes. Option C has song lyrics for your prompts instead, but otherwise work the same way.

Okay, cool. What if I want to do more than one set of prompts? What if I want to do song lyrics and word prompts?

Well you’re in luck, hypothetical reader! You can do just one set, two sets, or all three! You’re an overachiever if you decide to do all of them (there’s one overachiever in every family, you make me so proud!), but there’s some things to keep in mind if you decide to do that.

Say Day 1′s A prompt is “shoreline”, B’s prompt is “moonlight”, and C’s prompt is “darling don’t be scared/baby let’s go anywhere”. If you decide to do all three, you must either incorporate all of those into one piece, or do each one separate, and they have to be posted for Day 1.

You can do one set of prompts for fic, and another for art, if you wanna do both types of media. Or you can do more than one set for fic, or all of them for art.

Do I have to post them all at the same time?

AO3 allows you to change the date of publication if you’re going to only post once a week (to avoid spamming the tag), or every few days or what have you. We do encourage posting things the day you’re supposed to (so Day 1 would be posted June 1), but you don’t have to. The labeling is more important just for tracking purposes.

Where do I post things?

Post wherever you normally do for fic or art, whether that’s here on Tumblr or over at AO3. Just give us the link so we can share the links :) There will also be a collection on AO3 you can put your things in so people can find them easier.

If I get a head start on the prompts, and I’ve finished, can I post them early?

You cannot. Day 1′s prompts can’t be posted before 1 June. Any time after that is fine.You can of course queue things up on Tumblr for posting, and have things drafted and ready to post on AO3 before then, but they can’t be posted before that prompt’s date!

Is the content we make ours to keep?

You’re posting these things to your own accounts, we’re just reblogging and retweeting the links and summaries here for more easier tracking. The content is yours to keep, we’re happily sharing it around with you.

Do I have to remain canon compliant or can I do an AU?

Your works can be canon compliant, canon divergent, or alternate universes. What’s important is that you keep the prompt in mind, and that your works contain Gundam Wing, and LGBTQ+ themes.

So yes, you can happily yeet Frozen Teardrop into the sun if you so choose.

Does my work need to include an LGBTQ+ pairing as the focus if I go the romance route?

I mean. Pride is about the LGBTQ+ community. You don’t have to have romance, but you do need to feature that LGBTQ+ representation.

Which yes, that includes ships.

You can have het ships in your works, but they shouldn’t be the focus, because that kind of defeats the purpose of LGBTQ+ representation.

What about ships that are considered “het”? Can I write them as being a queer ship instead?

If you want to make 1xR or 2xH or whatever het ships not het (maybe Heero and Relena are both bi, or Relena is pan and Heero is ace, or Heero is questioning; Hilde is genderqueer; Noin is non-binary, Sally is a lesbian, and Une is bi, etc.), that’s fine. But don’t use this as a way to try to sneak in het ships as a focus, this is about LGBTQ+ representation.

Can I write about polyam?

Absolutely. You can have your 1x2xR, your RxDxC, your 9x11xS, your pilot piles, etc.

Bottom line, have fun with these prompts, and don’t be afraid to unfurl all the LGBTQ+ flags and let them fly proudly!

Thoughts:

I can’t believe we are almost done with the series, but the final act players are all finally in place with the proper introduction of White Fang and Zechs taking his position as the head. And I know how the last two episodes go, but I don’t remember much about the seven episodes between now and then, only small details. 

It’s also really bold to introduce White Fang this late in the series. The show spent so long world building and establishing characters and organizations during the first 1/4 of the show, and to throw in a new element this late in the game is crazy. We’ll see if they get the same amount of attention as the rest...

Alright almost done with the rewatch

🔥Gundam Wing fandom

I first want to caveat that any fandom as with a lot of things is that it is what you make of it. A lot of the time, people’s bad experiences with a fandom is because they didn’t properly curate their fandom experience, or get to invested in particular outcomes or aspect of fandom that don’t bear out.

And so my fire take is that...the het side of Gundam Wing Fandom was SUPER homophobic. I feel that this doesn’t get touched on because everyone thinks of the rampant misogyny (Gundam Wing fandom was where I learned about misogyny particularly as it is expressed by women). But the het side of the fandom was super into traditional gender roles and put a hard pressure that you couldn’t be into any male ships, otherwise you were a traitor with this those treacherous yaoi fans, and there was a huge push to be like “NONE OF THESE CHARACTERS ARE GAY! THEY ARE STRAIGHT!” which like okay, way to make me as a 15 year old burgeoning lesbian feel like crap.

But it was insidious because then the het side would be super like “Oh it’s okay to ship femslash, but only as a side thing and not like as like a main OTP thing” but I did see slurs, and completely heterosexist language used a lot, so I am going to be honest, I can see how that association would lead to younger, less knowledgable fans making the assumption that a person is homophobic if they liked Relena or 1xR. That doesn’t excuse it, but it sort of sets the tone for why that stuff occurred.

And in a lot of respects, I have found that the het side still gets like really crappy whereas the other side has mellowed to the point where I am wary of a lot people who are into 1xR and would rather hang with the offbeat rare pair dudeslasher than Heavy Duty Het Shippers. Like as a ship (not disassociating them from their fandoms) I dislike Quatre/Dorothy more than I actually dislike 1x2 at its core. If 1x2 hadn’t had it’s Relena bashing hey day, I would have just shrugged it off as a “You do You” thing.

But luckily I now have @satelliteinasupernova to share with me the joys of talking about Heero and Relena double dating with Quatre and Trowa and so I’m good and at peace.

How do you feel about the ship between Fangbone and Bill (Fangbill)? Do you ship it? I prefer to ship them when they're older.

This is a long one coming...

Honestly first and foremost I appreciate all romantic relationships having a core of companionship/friendship as to romantic stuff. Romantic subplots and assumptions tend to eat at all interaction and characterization so slash shipping is a doubleedged sword.  IT at least means playing with character interaction and starting from and valuing that interaction and seeing how it takes and changes them.

That’s ALREADY going to be a bit of an issue.  Most people want fanfiction to have more of what they like but can’t get.  But if you seem to slot on a pre-existing plot from, say Boys Love Manga or the one or two romantic plot or what you learned from SuperWhoLock...

Its going to feel bothersome like the characters are being lost.  And it CAN lose something in a dynamic for characters to be taken from friends to inlove

Moreso when the characters are young or something else dominates their characterization or interaction.

At the same time shipping can happen with friendships due to the strong and powerful dynamic there and it “making sense” but this isn’t as progressive or mature as seems.  If you take any intimacy to be sexual intimacy or prologue to a romance.  Its particularly bothersome for *some* people as it means if they have deep friendships but no opposite pursuits they “must* be queer or that fixes them

(and oh BOY do I have issues with the idea of from obnoxious try hard straight guy to modern more handsome and just better gay man)

Can’t two guys genuinely just be friends? with Just be not some subtractive statement but understanding how much friendship matters.

In terms of queer fanon this can get bad if, on the social media chatter, it dominates discussion to the point creators and everyone has to chime in or its such a core or wink wink nudge appeal its tilted all circumstances in presentation and character to that favor (SUperwholock, Trans!Marco, Sword Lesbian Terrifying Renegade Pearl).  And this doesn’t just happen with queer fan theories and shipping.  Zutara was tumor on Avatar the Last Airbender and helped contribute to the much maligned romantic subplots and characterization of Mako and Korra in the first two seasons of the sequel series.  

People get so invested in the idea that ISN’T EVEN IN THE SHOW ones fans made up but so dominates discusssion and discourse you have concede its importance you can’t even talk or consider anything else! Heaven help the characters that “get in the way” of the ship especially a queer ship who for some this is their outlet or means of self exploration so attacking it is attacking them as people or a hate crime. (poor poor Relena Peacecraft on ff.net)

So its easy to get out of character, it can dominate discussion to the point people who are fans of the show but not of the ship are in situation of “say nothing or go along or get nothing.”  And finally the “young characters bit.  Really if not for how the internet nerd culture handles ships I wouldn’t mind.  Romantic subplots or just events happen with characters in books of all ages.  BUT STILL knowing how to write that satisfyingly is an issue.  Not least how many know of any relationship, let alone same sex male involving constant fighting and possible interdimensional separation and all that stuff, that goes from what are relationships in third grade to... what?

Funnily enough some good examples of junior relationship and it advancing to a conclusion, to me, is Matt, Sora, Tai thing on Digimon.  Tai and Sora sort of had a thing,  they broke up, she moved on to matt, because time and people move on and change.

There is, as you note, the whole “age them up” solution. But that kind of smacks into the issues of "everything else BESIDES The romance us trashed for my fapping."

  and I hated Zutara for mutilating characterization, culture, distance, and more just so “we can ship her and its more better than her relationship with Aang”  After all why do they hook up later?  How is all the interim stuff just “forget about it?”

Because jumping to legal!FangBill takes the focus off of Fangbone and Bill as they are and what they provide already. Timeskips are always an issue and ones with such singular transparent intent, where plot and setting crushed for romantic and only romantic conclusions frustrate.

But somewhat current age Fangbill runs into “but what do they DO in the interim?”  

Now I have reblogged stories, art, and comics that emphasize just that and answer it. So even if not precisely into it, I would appreciate it for feeling true to the characters PLUS the romance.  And this promisingly covers that aspect.

So I’m not totally against Fangbill.  Even can like and appreciate it.  And find it fun, cute, and compelling.  But if I could make a decision with my god-powers-that-don’t-exist to compell stuff?  More friendship and battlebrotherhood with the possible opening of a relationship, but really centered on the assumption they aren’t lovers and don’t have to be.

Especially as so young with a more solid cast with more interactivity, unlike shows aiming older and "deeper," their friendship IS compelling and their supporting cast and how relate does have room to at least play off one or both compellingly. Its best to avoid at least that serious romance plotline, even if on occasion or intermittently, they might find themselves in love or infatuated or what have you.

Finally I’m worried the deforming effect on speculation and worldbuilding that Fangbill being a big thing could have for imagining and characterizing Skullbania, the school, and other stuff. Water tribe and air nonads were shat on for veing 'the competition or the load' to your wounded hot rich guy with a flaw that never inconveniences you. (ETA: Made all the worse the chucklefucks behind such duscourse all but certainly will toss in patriarchy, gaslighting, and etc after get a little older)
