What’s On Michael Portillo’s iPod: Cola
Words: Andy Hughes (Photo Credit: Craig Scheihing) Here at Birthday Cake For Breakfast, we like to get to the heart of what an artist is all about. We feel that what influences them is just as important as the music they make. With that in mind, off the back of releasing their latest album ‘The Gloss‘ (via Fire Talk Records), Ben Stidworthy and Evan Cartwright of Cola talk us through a number of…

Lenny Breau with Dave Young – Live at Bourbon St.
Live at Bourbon St. is a live album by guitarist Lenny Breau and bassist Dave Young that was released in 1995. It was nominated for a 1997 Juno Award in the category of Best Mainstream Jazz Album.
Writing for Allmusic, critic Scott Yanow gave the album 5 out of 5 stars and wrote: “The music (full of close musical communication) is subtle and quiet yet consistently inventive. It is obvious after a few minutes of listening that Breau had complete control of his guitar and an original voice of his own…. Overall this two-fer gives one a definitive portrait of the nearly forgotten legend.”

Song of the Day: Danny Gatton, "Elmira St. Boogie"
Guitarist extraordinaire Danny Gatton was born on this day in 1945. He “combined blues, rockabilly, jazz, and country to create a musical style he called ‘redneck jazz’,” according to Wikipedia. Among his admirers were Les Paul, Lenny Breau, James Burton, Trey Anastasio, and Steve Vai, to name just a few. Sadly, he took his own life in October 1994. “Elmira St. Boogie” is from his 1991 album 88…
