Brendan Dassey
By Sydney Clifford, Marymount University Class of 2023
December 5, 2022
In March of 2006, investigators interrogated a sixteen-year-old boy, Brendan Dassey. They thought that he would be help to the investigation of the murder of Theresa Halbach. There had been evidence pinning the murder to Dassey’s uncle, Steven Avery, and believed that he was an accomplice to the murder, rape, and mutilation of Halbach. During the interrogation, Dassey had confessed to the crimes on video tapes. However, during the interviews, he does not seem to know the information about the murders and continues to guess what happened to Halbach. There was also backlash to the interrogation because Dassey was an adolescent, and he had an intellectual impairment. Based on reports, Dassey was seen not understanding why he was being questioned and continuously kept asking when he will go home and go back to school. Still, Dassey’s confession was taken to court, and he was sentenced to life in prison.
This case has gained media attention after a Netflix series was created based on Dassey’s case called Making a Murder. Petitions by supporters are being signed and Dassey’s lawyers continue to fight for his release. In 2017, the case was presented to the Supreme Court, but the courts denied the request of appeal. They concluded that because Dassey had voluntarily confessed, he received the Miranda warnings, no promises were made and other factors; his confession was valid to use as evidence. Today, Dassey remains in prison while groups of attorneys fight for his release.

Born in #Hattiesburg MS on June 12, 1927, Clyde Kennard moved to Chicago to live with his sister when he was 12. In 1955, the same year #EmmittTill was murdered, Kennard left school at the University of Chicago as a junior to help run the family farm when his stepfather died. There were no black colleges nearby but @officialsouthernmiss was 15-mins from his #Eatonville home, so the 7 yr #ArmyVet applied for admission to the all-white institution in 1955 to finish his degree. The Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission lead investigator Zack J. #VanLandingham, a former FBI agent, searched in vain to dig up “derogatory information” about Kennard. Kennard was framed in 1960 for stealing a bag of chicken feed. It took a white jury 10 mins to convict Kennard based on the testimony of the key witness Johnny Lee Roberts. Roberts, a 19 yr old black feed store employee, admitted stealing the feed but testified that Kennard planned the robbery. Judge #StantonHall gave #ClydeKennard the max sentence of 7 yrs of hard labor at Parchman Penitentiary. Roberts was given probation & went back to work at the store where he stole the feed. In 1962 #VernonDahmer & #MedgarEvers helped Jet reporter #LarryStill smuggle a camera into Parchman and take pictures of the emaciated, “cancer-stricken” prisoner who #Mississippi’s leaders insisted was being treated well. After a national uproar, the governor released him. Kennard passed away in Chicago less than 6 mos later on July 4, 1963. 2 weeks before Kennard died, Medgar Evers was assassinated. Following Kennard’s death, Vernon Dahmer honored him w a special #voterregistration meeting at the Shady Grove Baptist In 2005, Roberts confessed that Kennard had “nothing to do with stealing the chicken feed” and was arrested “not because of the feed but because he was trying to go to Southern.” #ForrestCounty Circuit Judge Robert Helfrich vacated Kennard’s conviction. On Tuesday, May 30th, AABANY co-hosted Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer’s For the Public Good, a discussion among three prominent Asian Pacific Americans serving in each branch of the federal government. In a conversation moderated by Susan L. Shin (Partner at Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer and Immediate Past President of AABANY), the panel included: Joon Kim, Acting U.S. Attorney for Southern District of New York; the Honorable Judge Denny Chin of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second District; and Representative Grace Meng for the 6th District of New York and the Vice-Chair for the Democratic National Committee.
Each panelist discussed his or her differing career path in public service. In addition to explaining their origins of their interest in furthering the public good, the panelists also recounted the challenges they faced as Asian Pacific Americans. The panel noted the lack of Asian Pacific Americans, or minorities in general, within government. They encouraged the steps that the audience – law students and partners alike – could take to achieve greater minority representation within the highest echelons of government.
AABANY would like to thank all three esteemed panelists and Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer for hosting the discussion in celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.
Write up by AABANY intern Quentin Wong. See the live-tweet from the event below.
