Sometimes I'm writing, and then all of a sudden my eyes roll to the back of my head, I start foaming at the mouth, and a new, perfect plot point emerges from the depths of my psyche like it's been placed there forcefully by a divine power. It's either God or Satan, and I don't know if I care which.

ok...so...i know this will probably never happen because it's an extremely...chaotic choice BUT!!!! what if the detective was somehow killed (bonus points if it's the aunt/whoever it is related to Rook after they understood the detective will never join them or something idk) and UB resurrected them with magic. imagine the trauma. imagine the angst. imagine how every LI would react to it.
like i said im %99.9 sure this wont happen but that wont stop me from listening to appropiate music and imagining it.

hello upper middle class northern usamerican tumblr user. i want to play a game. you will notice that you are in a super america convenience store in rural kentucky - you have three minutes to purchase a snack and drink of your choice and make normal small talk with the cashier. however, if you use the word "cryptid" or generally make reference to appalachia and its inhabitants as "wild", uncivilized, or lacking restraint around alcoholic beverages during your time here, i will personally tie you to the chassis of a four wheeler and tip it into the river. live or die. make your choice
#speak friend and enter#i can appreciate mothman as much as the next guy but can we stop treating appalachia like it's the subject of a richard attenborough doc#i come from a long line of hillbillies and i like to think i've got a good sense of humor about it but sometimes i am tested#like. this is not a lawless land with a moonshine still in every holler and nameless voices in the woods!! this is a normal town!!#idk maybe i'm reading too much into it but i'm just tired of the cultural fetishization of appalachia by people who aren't from here#and who don't know anything about it. like yeah you know mothman and what hooch is and that's all well and good#but do you know what the opioid epidemic really is. do you know about the structural injustices that keep people like mcconnell in power#i'm not saying you have to apply dialectical political analysis to every issue that occurs in the region to be able to have an opinion#but also like. i'm tired of people looking at places like where i grew up and making them into things they aren't#like. on the one hand we have ''ooh spooky hills!! run if you hear the trees whisper your name''#and on the other we've got ''isn't appalachia so depressing...so hashtag ethel cain core...shame it's got no value beyond aesthetics''#and on yet another hand we have ''i - a person with no ties to the region - am going to take up the cause of every social issue#occurring across the entire appalachian region so the world will see just how bad these poor hill people have it. i am very smart''#and like. it's frustrating#i'm not saying you should never speak about appalachia if something we have is interesting to you#nor am i implying that i want to gatekeep discussion of the region's issues to the community bc that won't accomplish anything#i'm just saying that like any place it's complex. it's got its good things and it's got its bad things.#and you shouldn't isolate the good from the bad or vice versa - especially if you don't know the context in which those things happen.#and for the love of god dont let your own ignorance cause you to boil down those issues into a reductive and inaccurate set of stereotypes#learn about us from us. not from tiktok not from movies and for christ's sake not from hillbilly elegy. i hate that fucking book#anyway that got weirdly serious but i mean it. putting appalachia as a talking point up on the shelf until y'all can speak intelligently#ok to rb

I realized my disconnect when it comes to talking about one piece, and why I always say I like talking to dudebros more even if they're the worst... Is, I like to analyze literature. I like to analyze the source material and the canonic information. Shipping and stuff is for fun but I see it separately. The intersect bc canon inspires fanon but fanon CANNOT change canon.. I don't mix the two things especially not when I'm doing analysis... So I'll say things that are factual and ppl who are stuck in their headcanons or personal biases will think I'm saying something bad. What I'm saying isn't good or bad. It's not judgmental of the character I'm talking about. Nor is it a bias bc I like them/dislike them. I'm analyzing odas writing and his intentions as an author and what he's trying to say and portray. Most ppl online are too caught up in headcanons and personal bias while having no media comprehension and they think that I'm attacking their made up fanon stuff..... Noooo..... You're over there playing pretend and I'm over here doing analysis. We are not doing remotely near the same activity. They don't always need to intersect. Anyways it's hard to have genuine analytical conversations with ppl fully indulged in fandom and fanon. The only group of ppl who doesn't do that are dudebros but also... They get hung up on other stuff that doesn't matter too. Idkkkkkkkkk.

what if we just orchestrated a reenactment of the 'being locked in a storage closet' moment from a decade ago, but don't tell seven. then they'll HAVE to talk to us right? that was like.. twelve hours. there's no way they can keep quiet for that long. if it's the only way, then i'll take it. "oh nooooo is the door locked? what a shame.. looks like we're stuck. deja vu huh? so what do you wanna talk about? maybe... the events of THREE FUCKING YEARS AGO????"
A bit off topic but you mentioning a decade ago just blew my mind, man…seven and MC have known each other a while 😭😭 I can't imagine them not having anything to say while stuck in a closet for 12 hours but Seven is nothing if not a dedicated hater so

"The Land of the Living and the Dead", by Shauna Lawless
Tumblr media
𝐈 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐍𝐞𝐭𝐆𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐞𝐱𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 𝐑𝐄𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐒𝐄 𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐄 - 𝐒𝐞𝐩 𝟏𝟕𝐭𝐡, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I don’t know how Shauna Lawless to balance character driven and plot driven writing, yet she’s done it again. After two books and two novellas, the third and final book of the “Gael Song” series dances between the two concepts like she would dance an Irish jig. She makes it look easy from the outside but it is actually a very complicated goal to achieve. In a way, it is like trying to untangle a Celtic knot.
I recognize that I was a bit afraid of this book before reading it, mainly because I am deeply emotionally involved in these characters and their development. Knowing that Irish legends, myths, and songs almost always have a gloomy or tragic feel beneath the words and the melodies I was prepared for something great in terms of storytelling but I had no hope of a happy ending (which isn’t a bad thing per se). A few months prior to reading this book Shauna herself without unveiling anything plot-wise, had warned me that I would probably cry. And she was right. But you know, there are tears of sadness and rage and there are tears of joy as well, what kind of tears I shed I won’t tell so don’t take anything for granted before the end of this book.
The only certainty is that Fódla’s and some other characters’ stories end here. Forgive me for keeping the plot of this third book a secret, but I believe that these secrets and tribulations are for you to unveil, just know that it’s so worth the while. I can guarantee that the “Gael Song” books leave a tattoo in your heart and your soul, that’s all you need to know. As for the end of the series, well, it is an end. Some doors are closing here but also some others are opening, there’s hope for the future and some of the characters’ paths are only beginning. Something new, as fearsome and as hopeful as the day that Fódla started her own journey, is being born. Ancient legends and myths never end, they just become other people’s stories, tangled with other stories in the unfihished tale that is History, combined with folklore, magic, and fantasy. After all, this is how legends are born. How lucky we are that we have a master storyteller to guide us through the darkness into the light.
This is not over. YET.

Welcome to Virtue
Tumblr media
So I cannot sing the praises of Murphy Lawless (in this case writing as Zoe Chant) as an author enough. I thoroughly enjoyed the Gladiator Shifters books, but coming back to the beginning of the Virtue Shifters series, I was absolutely delighted. Why? The writing, for one, but for this book specifically? The main character is a mid-30s single mother with a four year old. I was PSYCHED to have an FMC who wasn't 20 with a mint-condition uterus. (See, Miss America Pageant??? Women who are older and who have kids are AWESOME and have VALUE.) As a 30-something myself who has been rapidly noticing her protagonists seem younger by the year, this was a breath of fresh air and a delightful change.
And ngl, hot late-30s guy with washboard abs who the four year old trusts and loves? Excuse me while I fangirl squee over how awesome this is. Let's talk Timber Wolf.
Mabs and Noah Brannigan escape Noah's deadbeat, dickhead sperm donor to live in an inherited heritage home in Virtue--an old, New England shifter town. Unfortunately, the home is in desperate need of restoration and Mabs is basically broke and trying to DIY something that really and truly needs a professional while wrangling an almost supernaturally active four year old.
Thats about when Jake Rowly rocks back into town nursing a broken heart and kickass carpentry skills. He and Mabs are aggressively set up by a mutual friend, and the pair work together to restore the house and make it safe for Mabs and Noah to live in.
When Mabs's ex shows up looking to either take her back or take Noah away from her, Jake is standing firmly behind Mabs, letting her find the confidence that her gaslighting dickhead of an ex did his best to quash, and protecting Noah. And as a fun side effect of all of this, they manage to uncover a murderous realtor and a literal fortune stuffed inside an old mattress that neatly solves Mabs's financial troubles.
Groundbreaking? Not particularly. Fun? Absolutely. Warm and cozy? You bet! If ever you want a snuggly romance that isn't a couple of single twenty-somethings, this is a great one to start with. I particularly love that despite the genre, Mabs is over here rebuilding her own confidence with support, rather than having Jake's existence just magic it back. Their conversations about what Mabs does and does not want Jake to do are amazing and really sweet. Not to mention the situational comedy of trying to fall in love while keeping things G-rated for the rambunctious child in the house that this book does beautifully.
I rarely have a lot to say about the Virtue Shifter books, but thats more because they're adorable and snuggly and I adore them than anything else. So if you're looking for a cozy shifter romance, you cannot go wrong by picking up this series.
