I've been thinking about how long it took everyone to buffer after the anti-age fog and to process what happened: it took Rita's glasses for her to place herself in 1937, and Vic only registered what was happening when he felt his braces--both long after the fog disappeared.
How potent must Laura's teenage trauma have been for her to feel even the first hint of it and immediately clock what the fog was doing--without yet having the visual clue of seeing what had happened to the others? She had only just walked into the room and had no context for the potion bottle; she had no reason to suspect it was an anti-ageing spell, but it took only the fractional moments of fog-blindness for her to figure it out and shapeshift accordingly.
Laura de Mille is the most intelligent, quick-thinking, and competent person in that house. And she is also full of so much pain. 😔

Doom Patrol: The 10 Best Main Characters, Ranked
Yes! So happy about the #1! Though in this list I would have placed Dorothy a lot higher than she is but hey, I guess I could just make my own list if I want that.

Summaries under the cut
The Doll People by Ann M. Martin and Laura Godwin
Annabelle Doll is 8 years old--and has been for over 100 years. Nothing much has changed in the dollhouse during that time, except for the fact that 45 years ago, Annabelle's Auntie Sarah disappeared from the dollhouse without a trace. After all this time, restless Annabelle is becoming more and more curious about her aunt's fate. And when she discovers Auntie Sarah's old diary, she becomes positively driven. Her cautious family tries to discourage her, but Annabelle won't be stopped, even though she risks Permanent Doll State, in which she could turn into a regular, nonliving doll. And when the "Real Pink Plastic" Funcraft family moves in next door, the Doll family's world is turned upside down--in more ways than one!
Ivy & Bean by Annie Barrows
The moment they saw each other, Bean and Ivy knew they wouldn't be friends. But when Bean plays a joke on her sister, Nancy, and has to hide quickly, Ivy comes to the rescue, proving that sometimes the best of friends are people never meant to like each other. Vibrant characters and lots of humor make this a charming and addictive introduction to Ivy and Bean.
Hans Brinker, or the Silver Skates by Mary Mapes Dodge
For youngsters of the Dutch village, the time is especially exciting. But Hans and Gretel Brinker, with their hand-carved wooden blades, can hardly expect to compete against their well-trained young friends who own costly steel skates. Raff Brinker, their father, is seriously ill, and the desperately poor family is struggling to survive. To win the race, the siblings will need a miracle — and a helping hand.
The Sea of Trolls by Nancy Farmer
The year is A.D. 793; Jack and his sister have been kidnapped by Vikings and taken to the court of Ivar the Boneless and his terrifying half-troll wife; but things get even worse when Jack finds himself on a dangerous quest to find the magical Mimir's Well in a far-off land, with his sister's life forfeit if he fails.
A Dog's Life by Ann M. Martin
Squirrel and her brother Bone begin their lives in a toolshed behind someone's summer house. Their mother nurtures them and teaches them the many skills they will need to survive as stray dogs. But when their mother is taken from them suddenly and too soon, the puppies are forced to make their own way in the world, facing humans both gentle and brutal, busy highways, other animals, and the changing seasons. When Bone and Squirrel become separated, Squirrel must fend for herself, and in the process makes two friends who in very different ways define her fate.
The Willoughbys by Lois Lowry
Abandoned by their ill-humored parents to the care of an odious nanny, Tim, the twins, Barnaby A and Barnaby B, and their sister, Jane, attempt to fulfill their roles as good oldfashioned children. Following the models set in lauded tales from A Christmas Carol to Mary Poppins, the four Willoughbys hope to attain their proscribed happy ending too, or at least a satisfyingly maudlin one. However, it is an unquestionably ruthless act that sets in motion the transformations that lead to their salvation and to happy endings for not only the four children, but their nanny, an abandoned baby, a candy magnate, and his long-lost son too.
H.I.V.E. by Mark Walden
Otto Malpense may only be thirteen years old, but so far he has managed to run the orphanage where he lives, and he has come up with a plan clever enough to trick the most powerful man in the country. He is the perfect candidate to become the world's next supervillain.
That is why he ends up at H.I.V.E., handpicked to become a member of the incoming class. The students have been kidnapped and brought to a secluded island inside a seemingly active volcano, where the school has resided for decades. All the kids are elite; they are the most athletic, the most technically advanced, and the smartest in the country. Inside the cavernous marble rooms, floodlit hangars, and steel doors, the students are enrolled in Villainy Studies and Stealth and Evasion 101. But what Otto soon comes to realize is that this is a six-year program, and leaving is not an option.
With the help of his new friends: an athletic martial-arts expert; a world-famous, beautiful diamond thief; and a spunky computer genius -- the only other people who seem to want to leave -- can Otto achieve what has never been done before and break out of H.I.V.E.?
Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotson
Sent in 1910 to live with distant relatives who own a rubber plantation along the Amazon River, English orphan Maia is excited. She believes she is in for brightly colored macaws, enormous butterflies, and "curtains of sweetly scented orchids trailing from the trees." Her British classmates warn her of man-eating alligators and wild, murderous Indians. Unfortunately, no one cautions Maia about her nasty, xenophobic cousins, who douse the house in bug spray and forbid her from venturing beyond their coiffed compound. Maia, however, is resourceful enough to find herself smack in the middle of more excitement than she ever imagined, from a mysterious "Indian" with an inheritance, to an itinerant actor dreading his impending adolescence, to a remarkable journey down the Amazon in search of the legendary giant sloth.
Babe the Sheep-Pig by Christ Grant-Bear
When Babe arrives at Hogget Farm, Mrs. Hogget’s thoughts turn to sizzling bacon and juicy pork chops—until he reveals a surprising talent for sheepherding, that is. Before long, Babe is handling Farmer Hogget’s flock better than any sheepdog ever could. Babe is so good, in fact, that the farmer enters him into the Grand Challenge Sheepdog Trials. Will it take a miracle for Babe to win?
The Chronicles of Chrestomanci by Diana Wynne Jones
Cat doesn't mind living in the shadow of his sister, Gwendolen, the most promising young witch ever seen on Coven Street. But trouble starts brewing the moment the two orphans are summoned to live in Chrestomanci Castle. Frustrated that the witches of the castle refuse to acknowledge her talents, Gwendolen conjures up a scheme that could throw whole worlds out of whack.

Hello one and all and welcome to the The Duchess Affair name post. This is a list of period-accurate given names you can give your MC if you need some inspiration or want to know what kinds of names ladies had back then. I've combed through the 1809 edition of Debrett's Peerage for names of noblewomen in the 1600s and 1700s in Britain, which is where I'm taking the liberty of assuming TDA is set.
As always, you can drop any questions in my inbox, I love love love playing reference librarian :-)
Most names in this period either came from the Bible or from literature. The Bible was the most common book owned and read, so Biblical names were frequently seen. Some nobles liked to show off how cultured and educated they were by naming their children after mythological figures or characters from poetry and history, but most people of all classes named children after ancestors or loved ones (which explains why it seems like it was the same dozen names getting passed around again and again.)
Very common names -- the majority of women back then had one of these names:
Anne
Caroline
Catharine (not a typo – this was the standard spelling in the 1700s!)
Charlotte
Diana
Elizabeth
Frances
Georgiana
Henrietta
Isabella
Jane
Louisa
Margaret
Maria (pronounced like “Mariah”)
Martha
Mary
Sarah
Sophia
Less common but not unheard-of names:
Agnes
Alathea
Albinia/Albina
Alicia/Alice
Amelia/ Emilia/Emily
Arabella
Augusta
Barbara
Bridget
Cassandra
Cecilia/Cecily
Clarissa
Constance/Constantia
Dorothea/Dorothy
Eleanor
Emma
Gertrude
Grace
Harriet/Harriott
Hester
Honora/Honoria
Jemima
Judith
Julia
Juliana
Lavinia
Laetitia/Letitia
Laura
Lucy
Marianna/Marianne
Matilda
Penelope
Priscilla
Rachael
Rebecca
Susan/Susanna/Susannah
Theodosia
Theresa
Thomasina/Thomasine
Rarities and oddities -- I only came across these names once or twice each, use them to add a bit of flavor and eccentricity!!!:
Abigail
Amabel/Amabella
Amantha
Anastasia
Angelica
Annabella
Antonia
Araminta
Beatrix
Camilla
Christiana/Christina
Clara
Clementia/Clementina
Dulcibella
Esme
Ethelred
Eugenia
Felicia
Flavia
Flora
Florentia
Frederica
Gabriella
Helen/Helena
Horatia
Josepha
Leonora
Madelina
Margaretta
Narcissa
Octavia
Olivia
Philadelphia
Rose
Selina
Sibella/Sibilla/Sibylla
Tryphena
Urania
Winifred
And just for fun, some extremely British sounding surnames I found that made me chuckle aristocratically:
Beckington
Cavendish
Chatham
Courtenay
Dalrymple
Darlington
Fortescue
Gainsborough
Kingscote
Lovelace
Mountstuart
Ogilvie
Pembroke
Pierrepont
Posonby
Tattershall
Twisleton
Wentworth
Willoughby
Wriothesley

In a way, you can determine how well someone has integrated into the Doom Patrol by how likely Willoughby Kipling is to come by just to be a condescending dickhead to them about things they would never reasonably have knowledge about.
Example: Laura De Mille
S3: Doesn't know who she is, so she gets to be his collaborator because she's not one of them and remains unfucked. (or at least useful to him somewhat; she is fucked in her memory)
S4: Part of the team and mocks him when he wants to steal her booze and yell at them about dead god cult things they know fuckall about because Niles never told them shit.
S5: Willoughby is literally an ass and wanders around on his two little hands wearing an ass-sized trench coat and smokes between his cheeks, and Laura tells him she doesn't see any difference?

Insistent Shower Thought: Hellcheer, but what if Willoughby/Ethel Cain coded.
Mind, Hayden is trans and afaik Ethel is meant to be too? So you wouldn't wanna be disrespectful there. But then again, Ethel's story doesn't really make that a plot point or big deal, so, could be done quite well.
But fr it mostly came from her being in my Holy Freezer Bride Trinity w/Chrissy and Laura Palmer. Just put them all together into one patron saint of doomed by the narrative.

Undrafted / unsigned players as of right now
With the SDHL / AuroraLiiga / Postfinance Women’s League / EWHL / other leagues either underway or soon to be underway, a lot of rosters are close to solidified with only a few spots left.
A lot of PWHL teams have made clear that they plan to not sign any / very few remaining free agents or draft picks until after training camp where they plan to have everyone remaining compete for spots. Obviously signed players and drafted players will be there, but who else? This is meant to give some light to that
This list does not include NCAA / USports players who went undrafted, mostly just due to lack of time. But feel free to add anyone notable!
Current list of rumored undrafted training camp invites.
Please note that this is not from PWHL teams officially and may not include all players invited / some may still be responding to offers
Boston Fleet -Jillian Dempsey, Klara Peslarova, Cami Kronish, Maude Poulin Labelle, Kelly-Ann Nadeau
Minnesota Frost - Claire Butorac, Brook Bryant, Lauren Bench, Charlotte Akervik

So uh. Now I'm really confused about the whole Laura/Bureau/Niles timeline. If the raid went down in 1949 and Niles's letter recommending Laura's termination was also dated 1949-
why is L. DeMille checking out the Immortus project in 1953???
I'm assuming she wouldn't still have access to this Top Secret project archive if she's no longer an employee? (I was under the impression that she was fired relatively shortly after the letter--which maybe she wasn't; maybe there was a multiple-year period of investigation? I'd just assumed she was fired, went straight to the Brotherhood of Evil and immediately got dispatched to the 21st century within a year but I guess not?)
And the way it took Laura so long to register what Immortus was when Willoughby mentioned the project, apparently as if she'd forgotten? Ohhh of course, the Immortus Project, as if it was just some trivial fascination of an annoying coworker she'd occasionally been subjected to hearing about and not something she'd spent nearly a whole month looking over herself? Coincidentally checking it out the month after Niles had it out for only a day?? And since she skipped the whole second half of the 20th century, she effectively checked this out within the last ~year or so of her living memory???
LAURA. WHAT DO YOU KNOW
