november is the month of the em-dash
#i've just realized that all three poems ive posted on @creatediana this month make copious use of the em-dash#and why not?—it's never done me wrong—it's an endearing break of syntax—perfect for pauses and indications in rhetorical shift—so take that!#tales from diana#lately i keep writing in a more dickinsonian voice than i have in awhile#i used to imitate her voice all the time when i was a teenager. it'd be a mood i just got into.#sometimes just from reading her or sometimes there would be... a vibe. to a thing i was thinking/observing that made me take it on#to write about it. and maybe that's what ive been having#i haven't been reading more dickinson than usual lately#and em-dashes aren't just a thing i do to sound like emily they're very much a part of my regular poetry (and prose for that matter)#but there's a way she did them... that just sticks. she made em-dashes seem very user-friendly and i don't think i'd adapt#my own style of using them if i weren't so exposed to them in my earlier years through her.
