I'm not sure if that's a good thing

“Well you’re definitely the first.” This past week, we screened-in the eastern facing porch on the side of the cabin. The porch slopes to the South, with the brick-on-dirt floor crumbling in that direction as well until it reaches uneven slabs of stone acting as steps down to the “yard” below. A mixed material retaining wall wraps beneath the steps to the south facing garage, holding up one corner of the narrow deck on the front of the house. The deck, in the heat of a high altitude summer, droops off the house like it’s daydreaming about the winter snow’s embrace. It’s safe to sit on, though I would not recommend leaning on the railing.

The side porch takes the brunt of the wind. Our wooden rocking chairs have been rocked some 20 feet into the yard more than once in the two months we lived here. In the myriad of threats we heard about the weather, most people included the wind. We all know how I feel about this ongoing weather intimidation tactic. I asked, “what speed are the gusts?” “Oh, they get up to 70 miles per hour on some days.” This was the first quantifiable piece of weather information someone had offered — an actual number we could react to with data and our historical personal experiences of various weather events. And our reaction was: uhhhh…. OK???? Look, I get it. No one’s preaching the skin benefits of -20 degree wind gusts at 70 mph, building snow drifts against your house in the span of minutes that Cooper could die in. I am not going to pretend that’s pleasant. But 70 mph? Any wind I’ve driven faster than does not intimidate me. I used to rally the horses at 12 years old in winds over 70mph to get them in the barn before the latest tornado whipped through. I helped shutter the resort in the BVI as the Category 5 hurricane rolled in. Even in Topanga, 70 mile per hour gusts were not uncommon in Santa Ana events. We had our single pane windows shatter more than once from debris in the wind. We taped cardboard up and went to sleep. That “70 mph” was all I needed to hear to confirm our next project: we were going to build a catio for these cats, and we were going to do it on the pre-existing porch structure to save time and money. We spent a week framing out the structure. We had to carve into the logs of the house to embed the wood supports for the framing.

And from there, every piece of wood was custom carved and cut to fit around the existing timber supports. The existing porch was so wildly uneven that there are gaps between each piece of old wood and the new framing. Our plan is to mix all the wood chips from the project with mortar/chinking and stuff the gaps — a good solution for the log cabin look. We built a plywood pony wall up to 28 inches from the interior of the porch, which gives a height of ~4-5ft from the exterior ground below. It’s capped with a 2x6” railing for even the fluffiest of cats to find a perch. The exterior will be wrapped with corrugated metal that we’ll quick-age to match the metal that wraps the bottom of the cabin. On the interior of the porch, we’ll use shiplap to hide the framing.

The screens themselves can withstand winds up to 120 mph, but to-be-determined if they can hold the weight of a growing maniac cat who has already tried to climb them. In the event the screens succumb to cat (or wind or snow or neighbor judgment) we’ll reinforce with metal mesh. We’re going to maintain this screen porch regardless of what the screen is. We had the pleasure of running into one of our more industrious neighbors the other day, and Ben asked him, “hey we’re building a screen porch. Is this a terrible idea?” He laughed. “Well you’re definitely the first.” But he liked it. Great way to diminish wind into the house. Simple way to regulate the temperature with massive south-facing windows. And indeed a practical outdoor safe haven for cats in predator territory. Just because you’re the first doesn’t mean you’re foolish — just foolhardy. There’s plenty of that here. This town has the typical mountain town’s truncated version of a colonizers’ history: “established 1881.” But it was plenty established prior to that by the Uncompahgre Band of the Ute Nation, removed by the U.S. Army on September 7, 1881, nearly 140 years ago. The government relocated the Uncompahgre Ute People to Utah, and one year after the Ute were forcibly removed from their ancestral land, San Miguel County split off from Ouray County and was made its own political subdivision in the newly-formed State of Colorado. In 1879, the ore-laden valley already had 50 people living in it, with a new narrow gauge railway only 2 miles away. By 1885, it was a town of 200 people. There was a hotel, a couple saloons, a pool hall. Winters were treacherous; the valley was and is prone to avalanches. But where there’s gold, there’s gumption. The power needed to run the stamp mill to process ore drove innovation. Timber was scarce at such high elevations, so a wood powered steam mill wouldn’t cut it. But the San Miguel River just a few miles down from the mine looked promising. Thus began the development and construction of the Ames Hydroelectric Generating Plant. It was a hit. In fact, it was so successful that the Ames Plant led to the adoption of alternating currents at Niagara Falls and eventually to being adopted worldwide as a viable power solution. The plant remains, but the gold rush obviously didn’t. By 1940, the U.S. Census declared this little town I call home as tied for the lowest population in the country: 2 people. By 1960, it was one of four incorporated towns in the U.S. with no residents. But the joke was on the Census — the town’s single resident was just out of town the day the census came through. 1960 population: 1. By 1980 the population grew to 38, 69 in 1990, and about 180 now. (Plus 51 dogs according to the town’s website.) With modern amenities, it’s easier to be here. Studded snow tires, satellite internet, solar panels, instant coffee. No matter the hardships, there’s the reality of the present. In the 1880s, as the town boomed, the Ouray Times declared, “it will be at no distant day a far more pretentious town than it is now.” That day hasn’t exactly arrived, but I guess it depends on what you consider pretentious. I don’t think the town claims any airs of excellence beyond what’s true. In fact, the town hardly claims anything at all. There’s no sign indicating it’s even here. There’s just the old side and the new side. The new side, the Eastern half, was drawn out in the early 1990s, some 100 years later, and is separated from the Old Town by an avalanche zone—preserved open space for hiking in the summer, preserved open space for surviving in the winter. The town forbids short-term rentals, no one has a fence, dogs roam free, and all the houses have that cabin look to them. A boulder nests in a grove near a trailhead in the center of town with a plaque paying respect to the Utes who called this valley home. There’s no industry here. No businesses allowed. If you want a $7 latte, you can drive the 14 miles required to get it, assuming there’s not an avalanche blocking your path. You can, however, buy a pink lemonade in a

solo cup at the permanent lemonade stand run by the local feral child mafia. Crystals (rocks) can be purchased for an additional cost. We bought one, hoping to buy favor at the same time. The town plan has a few guiding principles, and it’s all in the name of preservation. We must preserve: 1 - the quiet atmosphere 2 - the rustic character 3 - the natural setting

And finally: 4 - protect the health and wellbeing of the people here No snowmobiles, no ATVs, no drones. In fact, the only sign of the outside world here are the passers-through. When you take the dirt road through town to the end, you enter National Forest, and you can hike over the pass saddle at nearly 12,000 feet before descending down the other side into Silverton. The pass road climbs rutted through an aspen forest before scaling across a scree field and then lurching over to the other side. Every day, it seems like 30 or so Texans and Arizonans in lifted and loud Jeeps with unused mods climb over this mountain in the comfort of their air conditioning, simply to drive down the other side. You could hike it, ride it, run it, and ski it, but they don’t. They rev their engines, kicking up dust in a town of feral children and roaming dogs, staring at us instead of waving. I’ve lived here for two months and look how salty I am. I’ll fit in yet. But today, there is a temperature that whispers of perfect trails and the dwindling of ogglers driving 35 in a 15. It’s already snowed in the mountains we see from our kitchen. Today, like a dedication to the Septembers of our youth, you can feel a chill in the air. A temperature akin to pencils and sweaters and reinventing yourself. A temperature that doesn’t exactly sing “screen porch” but could if you had the right slippers on. That’s what I did this morning: put my slippers on and sat there in the cool mountain morning air, thinking about the cemetery behind our house, about the Ute tribe, about the miners, about the mailman who died on Christmas in 1875 on the pass, about the 5 people who died in avalanches here just last year, about the people in their cars on their phones driving through, and all the people who’s very first question to us was, “so are you gonna live here part-time or full-time?” Maybe it will be a hard place to live. But at least we’ll have a screen porch.

Hooolllly shit y’all. It has been a crazy weekend and about to be a stressful week.

Soo, there are not just 1 hurricane headed very closely to where I live but TWO. Which is the first time ever in recorded history that this has happened. The first will be hitting as a cat 1 ,as far as we’ve been told so far, tomorrow morning. Which really is just a ton of wind and rain. We survived Barry last year so wasn’t too bad. However the second should be hitting Wednesday as a cat 3 or 4. There are quite a few problems with that.

1) it is wayyy stronger.

2) the power usually goes out before the hurricane even hits (sometimes is cut off purposely to prevent even more damage). Considering there are 2 back to back, the power is most likely gonna be out all week. We didn’t get power back after Barry for almost a full day and a half after. And we were without power before it even hit. So it was miserable. I can’t imagine being without power like that with my babies.

3) we’ve never had 2 back to back 🙃

4) with the second hurricane we would’ve been on the bad side of it. If you think of a saw blade, one side you can see where you’re cutting and the other is spitting sawdust...we’ll be on the sawdust side picking up all the damage.

5) we’re also still dealing with the pandemic

Soo, fortunately we were able to leave and get away from these hurricanes ahead of time. We’re safe staying with my parents in northern Texas way out of dodge.

One pro to this is that the water around where we live is reallly low currently so if it floods it shouldn’t be terrible. But with hurricanes you really just never know until it gets there.

But yea, we’re safe. We’re trying to relax and stay calm and updated but we’re highly stressed and worried for our friends and family that couldn’t get away. We just don’t know what we’re coming home to till we get there.

Pray for Louisiana (and Texas because it could shift further that way) y’all. We’re stressed and worried and scared.

Hurricane Tips

Written 8/27/19

PLEASE NOTE

I am not a trained meteorologist, I have zero background in climate science or hurricanes. I am just a Floridian for more than a decade and have been through all levels of storms, even Cat 4 and 5.

Because I live in Florida, and It is now peak hurricane season, and channels like my local news, and The Weather Channel are going to start sensationalizing everything that moves in the caribbean and Atlantic, I thought I should write some ACTUAL tips for storm preparedness.

First, get yourself a good list like this one here and actually make a hurricane kit. I keep mine in a rubbermaid plastic storage bin, the same ones I keep my Christmas and Holiday decor in. I keep it on top of all other bins, and I have an inventory list attached to the lid with expiration dates so I can update goods at a glance.

There are several “grades” a storm goes through before it really becomes something dangerous. You have probably seen the memes floating around?

The reason these memes exist, is that when you live in a state constantly hit with hurricanes, you learn when to panic and when to just sit back be calm.

So, here is a very brief, 5 second Google Search lesson on storm categories.

If you hear about a tropical depression, this is legitimately just a really bad really wet thunderstorm that exists in the tropics. If it stays there too long it will become a worse storm, but if its gonna hit you as a depression, school most likely won’t even get cancelled, and if it does, its just for the day the storm makes landfall. Power probably won’t even flicker.

A tropical storm is pretty tame, same for Category 1 and 2 hurricanes in terms of WIND DAMAGE. You might lose power, could lose a shingle or two off your roof, some old thin branches from a tree, and your for sale sign in your yard. Maybe a young freshly planted tree or two. But not much else.

Category 3 storms and higher are when you really want to pay attention, be fully stocked on emergency supplies, have your shelter and evacuation plans A, B AND C prepared (seriously, these storms change directions like a 2 year old in a candy store, have multiple plans for where you are sheltering. Inland and north are your best bets, but beware of highway congestion.

Water is the dirty evil doer in any hurricane or tropical storm. Flooding could be an issue if you live in a flood zone, and if you aren't sure you can check online here https://msc.fema.gov/portal/search

Flooding is the main culprit for nearly all forms of devastation and damage to property, crops, livestock, and people.

If you find you are in a flood zone, update your insurance! Flood insurance is SEPARATE from homeowners and Hurricane and Renters, so be sure to add it on to your policy and if you need sand bags but can't get sand, a mix of kitty litter, flour, sugar etc in a trash bag is good in a pinch!

The above Emergency kit list is really good to have, don't wait til the last minute to get supplies! As the storm nears there will be a run on water, canned soups, non refrigerated and ready to eat snacks, bread etc in your area so expect a number of places to sell out of water, or places like Office Max and Staples and Lowes to jack up the prices for a case of bottled water (They price them per bottle instead of per unit) Also, gas can run out at gas stations so get some when you think of it, not when it’s convenient. Make sure if you have pets you make a plan for them to go potty in case it becomes unsafe for them to go outside, and bring in your potted plants, and lawn decor you care about. Anything larger, better be covered on your insurance policy. For windows you cannot put shutters on, like mine as I live in an apartment, I went to Dollar Tree and bought some plastic painters plastic, some duct tape, and some masking or painters tape. I made an X shape on each window with the duct tape (goo-gone will take off residue later) and then using the painters tape, attached the painters plastic sheeting over the whole window for a tiny amount of impact and water protection. (This won’t stop your window from shattering, but it may help you from having a floor covered in tiny glass shards.)

If you are worried about rain water damage, roll up some towels and lay them on your windowsills to absorb excess water that WILL blow in from the changes in air pressure and wind during the storm.

Buy canned food you will actually eat when the power goes out! Dairy based chowders are NASTY AF to eat cold. Trust me. Vegetable stew, Chicken noodle aren’t great, but they are stomachable.

Apples, Oranges, Bananas, tomatoes, Avocado and onion do not require refrigeration so they are awesome choices for healthy produce to eat during a lengthy power outage. If the power goes out, and you think it will stay out, clear your produce and lunch meats and dairy from your fridge that first day so you don’t waste all that money in groceries.

Have power free activities you can do with your family that won’t make you kill one another. Ever play a game of Monopoly for 5 days straight? I have. Choose fun games that aren’t too competitive,like Uno, Phase 10, Life, Chess or tabletop RPG’s like Dungeons and Dragons are excellent choices.

Solar powered emergency Radio. This thing will save your brain when the only sound you hear is wind, Rain and your family’s whining. Not to mention, warn you of tornadoes, local alerts, storm updates and other news.

There are tons of extra tips floating around online, but these are my go to’s. I hope they help!

Summary: Cat Austin is an investigative reporter with unanswered questions about Hydra. During a meeting with a source at a park, she’s attacked by Hydra. A mysterious man comes to her rescue. Now both of them are trying to get away before more Hydra agents show up.

"You think your father is still alive?" Bucky asked. Given everything he'd been through, it wasn't out of the realm of possibility.

Cat nodded. "I think they used the explosion as a cover for the church elders to get away. Mom and Eli were basically human sacrifices to sell the idea that everyone had died.

Bucky put his head in his hands. Here he was running from Hydra, running from everything they had made him, only to run into someone running straight at the organization for the same reasons.

"You know this is going to get you killed."

She sat back and looked at him. "It's worth it if I can get my answers."

"What are you hoping those answers will get you? Your mother helped you and your sister get out for a reason. "

His words hit her with force. "I've thought about that night at least once a day since then. About why she wouldn't go with us. My sister says it's because she would've been easier to track, but I don't know. All I do know is that her death deserves meaning. People need to know this isn't over, especially if it's tied to Hydra."

Bucky shook his head. "You need sleep."

"You need it more."

Before he could argue with her, she interrupted. "Look. We already established that you're running on nothing but nerves at this point. Get some sleep. I'm going to start working on the file."

"Okay, but when the sun comes up, we move again. Hydra will find your place soon. I did what I could, but it still isn't completely secure."

Cat smiled at him. "I'll get you a blanket." The image of her tucking in the feared Winter Soldier did seem ridiculous, but so did everything else in the last few hours.

After grabbing a blanket, she picked up the file from the kitchen counter. "Here's your blanket."

Bucky took the blanket but gave it a dubious look. He wasn't sure he should leave her on watch. Cat could tell what he was thinking.

"Look, Bucky, I couldn't sleep right now even if I tried. I'll be right here on the floor going through all this. If I hear the slightest noise, I'll wake you up. Promise."

He nodded and reclined back on the couch. It wasn't long before Cat heard slight snoring.

The file wasn't as clear as Cat would've liked. While it did include reports of a training camp for Hydra, it didn't specifically say where it was located. Some documents appeared to be in code and others were redacted. This was going to take more than a few hours work to fully understand.

The sun was beginning to peak through the barricaded windows when Cat finally started to yawn. She got up to make some coffee, careful not to disturb Bucky. The first drips of coffee started to fall into the pot when he finally moved.

"Good morning, sunshine. Would you like some coffee?"

Bucky lumbered into her small kitchen, his blue eyes still bleary with sleep. "Sure."

Cat reached into the cabinet and retrieved a mug that read "I need coffee before my coffee" and handed it to him. "There's sugar next to the coffee maker and creamer in the fridge."

"Thanks, but I drink it black. Sugar and creamer were luxuries when I was a kid."

"Grew up poor?"

"Not poor. My family did okay for the neighborhood we were in. Just a different time."

Cat frowned at him. Something wasn't connected right.

"Bucky, how old are you exactly?"

He stared at her for a moment. The tension was back in his stance like he was prepared to run. "What year is it now?"

"2014."

Bucky thought for a second. "That makes me 97 or so."

"What? 97? I know Hydra was involved in some strange experiments, but you seriously expect me to believe you're 97?"

He just shrugged and took a small sip of his coffee to check the temperature before taking a larger swig.

Cat returned to her coffee and let the conversation sink in.

"Bucky. Is that short for Buchanan?"

Bucky continued to concentrate on his coffee without giving her answer.

"Holy shit! Are you Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes?"

"That's what the display at the Smithsonian says." He continued to avoid eye contact. "I remember things in flashes, but nothing makes much sense."

Cat took a step towards him. If what he was saying was true, this was the greatest story since S.H.I.E.L.D. defrosting Captain America. "So what did Hydra do to you? You're supposed to be dead."

"Sorry to disappoint you."

She bit her lip. She was forgetting that he was a person, not just a potential lede story.

The conversation dropped off while they finished their coffees. Cat was just about to excuse herself to change when Bucky asked how her research had gone.

"Well, I found out there is some sort of Hydra-run youth camp. Couldn't get a clear read on where, but I do know it's in a mountainous area. I was actually going to ask you to take a look at some papers. They're written in code, and I was hoping you might recognize it."

He motioned for her to show him. Cat set down her mug and went to grab the papers from the living room. Just as she reached for the file, the love seat propped against the nearby window was shredded by gunfire. She immediately fell to the ground. From the kitchen, she heard Bucky yell, "Cat, don't stand up. Crawl back over here."

She quickly gathered up the file and army crawled back to the kitchen. As soon as she was back on the tile floor, Bucky jerked the refrigerator away from the wall to shield them from the hail of gunfire.

"Are you okay?" He pulled her up to a sitting position and looked her over for any obvious wounds.

"I'm fine."

"They're trying to force us out the door. My best guess is there's a team waiting outside."

"So how do we get out? That's the only way unless they stop shooting and you can jump three stories without breaking bones."

Bucky looked around her kitchen trying to put together a plan.

"Does anyone live next door to you?"

Cat shook her head. "It's empty right now. Management is renovating it."

"Stay here. I'll be right back."

Before she could ask what he was up to, Bucky leapt over the counter. Crouching low in the hallway, he gained a quick burst of speed and crashed through the wall into the next apartment.

Just as she had said, it was vacant. Bucky crept to the door and listened for any sounds in the hallway. He heard a shuffling noise on the other side. Risking a quick peek through the peephole, he counted at least three people in tactical gear.

He stepped back and planted a powerful kicked into the door sending it and one gunman flying across the hallway. The others had been trained on the door to Cat's apartment but scrambled to aim at Bucky. He grabbed the nearest barrel pointed at him and jerked the operative towards him. Grabbing him by the throat, he easily tossed him over the railing to plunge to the ground.

As he was turning to deal with the others, one opened fire. Bucky threw up his metal arm to shield himself from the bullets. One ricocheted off and hit an operative who fell to the ground with a grunt. That left one more he had seen through the peephole as well as two more he hadn't.

Bucky grabbed the fallen operative and used him as a human shield to get closer to the last three. When he was close enough, he threw the body at one knocking him down the stairway. He was close enough to another to grab him and shove him into the last man. The two fell against Cat's door hard enough to knock it down, but Bucky wasn't far behind. He stepped through the doorway and punched one man hard enough to give him a concussion. The last man was desperately trying to crawl away. Bucky stepped on his leg right behind the knee to dislocate it. The man cried out in pain.

Bucky crouched next to him. "Was it a kill or capture order?"

"Fuck you," the operative spit in his face.

Bucky grabbed the man's head and slammed it into the ground once. "Was it a kill or capture order?"

Cat peeked over the kitchen counter. "Bucky, what does it matter? Let's go!"

"It matters," he said without taking his eyes off the operative. "Last time. Was it a kill or capture?"

"Go to hell, Winter Soldier." The operative's tongue moved in his mouth to dislodge a cyanide capsule. "Hail Hydra!" He jerked a few times as foam filled his mouth.

"Oh, god! Is he dead?"

"We need to go. Come on."

Cat couldn't move. She thought she was prepared for what was ahead. She thought she could handle whatever nasty business Hydra would throw at her, but she hadn't thought it would include this much death.

Bucky grabbed his go bag and Cat's purse. Stepping into the kitchen, he pushed the refrigerator out of the way and grabbed Cat's hand. "Let's go!" He gently pulled her out of the kitchen and towards the door. Before stepping through, he quickly checked for anyone who may be hiding. Not seeing anyone, they walked out. Instead of taking the stairs, he walked towards one end of the open hallway.

"Cat, I'm going to pick you up now."

She didn't respond, only continued to clutch the file to her chest in a death grip. Bucky gently shook her arm.

"Cat? Catherine? Did you hear me?"

She blinked a few times before looking at him. "What? Yes."

"Okay. Here. Hold your purse."

Bucky lifted Cat into his arms and ran towards the railing. Just as they reached it, he jumped over it. Cat gasped as they fell, but Bucky landed on his feet.

"We need to find a car." He put her down and started walking towards the parking lot opposite of where she had parked.

"What's wrong with mine?"

"They know where you live. They know what you drive."

Cat shrugged. Of course, he was right.

Bucky found a late model car that was easy to hotwire.

"Where are we headed?"

"North until I find some place for us to hide."

"There's a S.H.I.E.L.D. safe house in West Virginia."

He glanced at her before returning his eyes to the road. "How do you know about that?"

"It was listed in one of the leaked S.H.I.E.L.D. files." Cat was quite proud of herself for remembering that obscure bit of information. It had only been mentioned once in a dull write up about the search for a rumored Asgardian artifact.

"Then that's where we're headed."

With shaking legs, Louis stood up from the position he was in, and suddenly the air around them got thicker. “You're- you're a witch.” Louis hissed under the harsh wind, making Harry flinch at the accusation in his voice.

Or, where Harry had something he did not wish to have. Louis was just trying to figure him out.

8. Gem and the Hunters: The Treasure of Babylon 34k**

Louis Tomlinson wished, for one thing, his whole life: to find the ancient city of Babylon. After one failed attempt, he swore to never again attempt a search for the city. His friend, Niall Horan never pushed the issue, but when his family finds themselves in trouble, Niall’s only option is to convince Louis to try and find Babylon again.

Niall enlists the help of two famous treasure hunters: Harry and Gemma Styles and their friend Liam Payne. Harry and Gemma love ancient cultures as much as Louis and would give anything to find Babylon. Liam is just along for the ride, running from a shade in his past.

The five embark on the adventure of a lifetime… and find much more than any of them bargained for.

My mother, aka Granny Ruth was a prayer warrior. I have no doubt she is now doing more for all of us on the other side than she could ever do here - that includes the latest Hurricane threatening Florida. It was a Level 1 with all indications of hitting us directly in the Tampa Bay area. After sending out an email prayer request blast to all of you with basic prayer/visualization/fishing instructions, Elsa was knocked down from Cat 1 to a Tropical Storm rating and in the words of our local meteorologist Denis Philllips, "the storm has moved further offshore and is starting to shear apart." Now we're safely on the other side of it and we're grateful to everyone that participated in Saturday's prayer request. And like our monthly Zoom call on the last Wed of the month, there is so much collective power in all of us praying/fishing together. I appreciate you more than you know and as for myself and our crew here, we strive daily to help/contribute to all of you!

Update before heading to bed - As some of you may know, I live in Florida~ Which means that I’ll be on a direct path with hurricane Irma. Before anyone gets too worried though, from all the charts I’ve seen, it’s supposed to turn from a cat 4 into a cat 1 by the time it gets near my city. And it’s doing this weird wave where it doesn’t actually hit Miami, plows through Tampa, and then will keep heading slowly Northwest, covering Georgia and turning into just a tropical storm over Tennessee; but btw, the more west it goes, the less I’ll be hit by it, so I should be all good~!

Still though, it’ll be powerful enough to take down power for a bit, and I’ll be staying with my mom at her office again like I did for Matthew last year ( we lost power for about 16 hours, while my family at home didn’t lose any ), so tl;dr, I’m not sure how my activity is gonna be when Irma finally comes around. Not that I’m very active to begin with ( which I want to fix so bad;;; I’m so sorry y’all ) but I just wanted to let everyone know!

Hurricane Dorian victim finds his wife’s glasses, diary and rosary — but not her body

FREEPORT, Grand Bahama — Since Hurricane Dorian laid waste to his home and island, Howard Armstrong has been on a grim quest: to find the body of his wife, Lynn.

Howard and Lynn were hunkered down in their one-story home in Freeport on the island of Grand Bahama when Dorian roared in as a Category 5 hurricane on September 1.

The storm sliced houses in two, hurled cars into the ocean and uprooted whole lives on the islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama. With winds exceeding 200 mph and a storm surge of over 20 feet in places, Dorian was the most catastrophic storm to ever hit the Bahamas.

A month on from Dorian, dozens are known to have died and hundreds are still missing. The reality that some may never be found is setting in.

For 20 years Howard and Lynn lived a simple but ideal life, in a low-lying area on the outskirts of Freeport.

“It was our paradise,” Howard said.

They built their small house facing a canal where Howard, who’s lived in the Bahamas since he was 6, kept the trawler he used to fish for crabs.

Lynn collected shells and decorated the yard with them. Howard stored his fishing traps on their coconut trees. Their house had been damaged by other big storms but they had always been fine.

Their luck ran out with Dorian.

The storm surge from the hurricane filled their house with water up to the roof. Waves inside their home ripped off metal storm shutters and turned them into deadly shrapnel.

Appliances swirled around and smashed into the couple as they watched the water rise in their kitchen.

“The refrigerator was the heaviest, the most dangerous, you tried to avoid that one,” Howard remembered.

They struggled to keep their heads above the water. They tried to hang on to the ceiling fan and float on their couch cushions. Howard attempted to smash a hole in the roof but didn’t have any tools to cut through.

Finally, a full day after Dorian first began pummeling their island, Howard and Lynn climbed onto the last thing left above the ocean — the kitchen cabinets.

He pulled their two cats on the cabinets as well, Howard said. Their dog had already been swept away.

Lynn was spent.

“Her teeth were chattering from the cold, she was giving up. I told her to get on top and hold on top of the cabinet,” Howard said.

“She said ‘I think I’m going to die.’ And I told her, ‘No, you’re not.’”

Howard swam out of their home to look for help but found nothing and no one. Returning to Lynn, he saw the cabinets had disintegrated and Lynn was floating in the water. She was dead.

Again, Howard swam out and this time made it to a neighbor’s home. There was a body inside there too. He stayed until at last, he was rescued by a group of Bahamians who formed their own search squads and ventured into his flooded streets on jet skis.

The storm had hit on Sunday, moving at a glacial pace of one mile per hour. It was now Tuesday, and Dorian’s winds still lashed Grand Bahama.

We met Howard hours later after he was saved, standing on a partially submerged bridge that had become the staging point for the volunteer rescue crews. He was waiting there to see if his wife’s body would be recovered.

The interview we did with him on the bridge was seen around the world and generated an outpouring of sympathy for the 66-year-old fisherman who lost everything.

Colleagues, viewers and readers later wrote us wondering what had become of him. Lynn was a British citizen, originally from Halifax in northern England, and the UK Embassy in Washington emailed asking if we knew whether her body had been recovered and if they could help Howard.

But Howard had vanished. He had lost his cellphone in the storm and was homeless.

For days we heard reports that he was crashing on various friends’ couches or sleeping on his boat. He was searching for Lynn’s body, his friends told us, but believed she had been carried off as the waters receded.

Three weeks after first meeting Howard, we got in touch with his daughter Meghann Gaines via social media. She lives in Florida, and said the family was trying to get him to come stay with them in the US.

While Bahamian officials say the two islands that were most impacted — Grand Bahama and Abaco — are “bouncing back,” conditions remain dire. There, people engage in a daily struggle to find gas, food, water and building supplies.

Many people in Freeport have electricity and brackish, salty water from their taps that they can bathe with, but officials warn against drinking it.

In Marsh Harbor and much of the rest of Abaco there is no power or water. Neighborhoods resemble ghost towns as thousands of people have fled the disaster areas for other islands in the Bahamas or the US.

For people who are missing family — like Howard Armstrong — there is the sense that time is running out for them recover their loves ones’ bodies.

We found Howard in Nassau and flew back with him to Grand Bahama Island to continue his search for Lynn.

When we landed, he received a text from a contact in the government saying more bodies had been recovered. He should go to the Central Police Station in Freeport immediately, the text said, to see if one of them could be Lynn.

Howard was both anxious and afraid. “What were we going to find after three weeks? What state would a corpse be in? Unrecognizable, right?” Howard asked. “Would you even be able to tell who they are? Is your hair still there?”

Howard went inside the police station and once again was asked to give a description of his wife. A police officer promised to get back to him.

While he waited, Howard took us back to the shell of his former home.

At the entrance to his community, police stood guard, one carrying an assault rifle to discourage looters.

Already, Howard said, looters had taken one of his boats which they tried to drag into the nearby woods, only to give up and leave the boat stranded.

In front of their torn apart home, the pieces of Howard and Lynn’s old life lay scattered.

Howard found Lynn’s glasses under a pile of rubble, one of her planners lay open near the dock — her meticulous notes sketched in small, precise handwriting. A rosary from her jewelry box hung from a nearby tree branch.

One month later he still did not know where his beloved’s body ended up.

“I feel guilty because I left her body and didn’t take it with me,” Howard said, even though he barely made it out alive himself. “I would have had her to bury.”

Howard is haunted by the things he could have done differently and the loss of everything he had.

Ramblings: Bergeron, JT Miller, Trocheck, & Hanifin (September 1)

We’re getting close! Prospect tournaments are firing up next weekend. Rookie camps will follow that week. We're a mere two weeks until main camps open, and then we’ve got preseason action beginning about 30 seconds after that.

The long summer is just about over. That means fantasy drafts are heating up all over the place. I’ve been offering personalized rankings for managers, and business has been picking up. JT Miller begins his first full season in Tampa Bay as a real threat to increase his across-the-board totals. After the deadline deal from New York, the 25-year-old concluded his regular season by splitting time next to Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov on L1 and with Yanni Gourde and Brayden Point in the middle of the lineup.

Those 19 games bore out 10 goals, 18 points, and 45 shots on goal. Just six of those points came on the man-advantage, despite seeing 2:23 of power play time on the top unit. This appeared to be a match made in heaven for the Bolts and for fantasy owners. Until the playoffs came, of course.

In 17 postseason contests, his production dipped considerably. Two goals, eight points and just 32 shots on goal. Four of those points came on the man-advantage where his deployment shot up to 3:33 per night. As the team tried to get things rolling, he ended up on the third line with Gourde and rookie, Anthony Cirelli.

Coming into 2018-19, the questions are plentiful for the former 15th overall selection from 2011. First and foremost, is his position in the lineup and positional eligibility. Fantrax has him as a RW/C. Yahoo has him as a RW. Only ESPN has him as a C/LW option. Drafting him with the expectation that he meshes with Stamkos and Kucherov would mean you’re locking him down as a left-winger on your roster with no assurance that he’ll be given that eligibility. Not straight away at least.

The other option that the Bolts need to look at is if Cirelli isn’t ready to take on the 3C duties, how easy would it be to simply slide Killorn up to 1LW and move Miller to 3C? That would be an even-strength killer to his fantasy value. It would also put his spot as the net-front on PP1 in jeopardy if Killorn found a little magic at evens.

The potential is there for a career-year for Miller. But the moving parts that need to come together are considerable. He'll be a big swing in the top 60 and I'd caution against reaching before 80 on draft day. In all likelihood, he ends up living in the 55-point range that's he seen the previous two campaigns.

Word came down on Friday that Patrice Bergeron is on track to start the season with the Bruins after offseason groin surgery in June. This is the second consecutive summer that the 33-year-old has gone under the knife as he needed a sports hernia repaired last year. Bergeron will skip the team’s trip to China in mid-September but plans to appear in at least a couple of the domestic preseason contests.

The veteran centre posted some incredible numbers in his 14th NHL season. 30 goals and 63 points in 64 games. His 0.98 points-per-game represented a career-high. As was his 13.4 conversion rate.

The boost in production can be explained by a few causes. His centring arguably the most lethal line in the NHL with Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak is at the forefront. His high conversion rate and a career-high offensive zone start time come next. Last season, Bergeron started 59.4 percent of his even-strength shifts in the fun end of the rink. A far cry from the typical 40 percent he was used to for the majority of his career.

So, what can we expect next season from the reigning Selke winner? Well, his projected point totals are right around the 63 he posted a year ago. Only most have him achieving so in 75-plus contests. That would fall back in line with his production over the majority of the previous six seasons. However, those were the days of all the heavy defensive lifting. The Bruins will be placing all the weight on that top line to drive offense.

I’ll put the over/under on his point-per-game output at 0.85, or a 70-point pace over a full season. I’d also been keen to take the over.

The KHL has changed their scoring system to mimic what the NHL does. I don’t know about you, but I was hoping the NHL would follow the K on this one. Rewarding teams for a regulation win just makes too much sense.

Oh well.

Noah Hanifin put pen to paper on Thursday. The restricted free-agent and new Calgary Flame signed a five-year pact worth 4.95 million per. Let’s remember that five million is the new four million – especially when it comes to blueliners. That makes this pretty good value for both sides. Hanifin will be 27 when the contract expires and will be set to join unrestricted free agency right in the midst of his prime. The team gets a young, top four defender at under five million.

Hanifin has witnessed slight offensive improvements in each of his three NHL seasons. That culminated with 10 goals and 32 points in 79 contests last season. He was sheltered in Carolina, playing third pairing minutes at even-strength and skating on the team’s second power-play unit. A similar deployment is expected in Calgary as he’s immediately reunited with his former Hurricanes’ bench boss, Bill Peters.

It’s always a bit of a challenge to project a 21-year-old, especially one with nearly 300 NHL games under his belt. However, the 21-year-old has never projected as a premier point producer. He’s likely destined to living in the 35-point range for his primes years and be able to supplement the peripheral categories with a few blocks and maybe sniff 100 hits if he ramps it up.

I wonder what Darnell Nurse's camp thinks of the Hanifin extension? The 23-year-old Oilers' defender produced 26 even-strength points compared to Hanifin's 25. He also played close to four minutes more per game while getting nary a sniff of power play deployment. The Oilers will have a difficult time fitting Nurse under the cap until they can put Sekera on LTIR. But even then, they'll need to move some parts around when everyone is healthy.

I expect Nurse is looking for 4-4.5 million himself.

The Winnipeg Jets signed their top prospect, Kristian Vesalainen earlier this week. The power winger was selected 24th overall in 2017 after seeing time in SHL. He made the transfer to the Finnish Liiga in 2017-18 and was a force. 22 goals and 43 points in 49 games were good to lead all U22 players in goals and points. His six points in five World Junior Championship games was a nice icing on the cake.

Vesalainen is trapped behind incredibly youthful depth on the wings in Winnipeg. That means he should begin his North American career in the AHL. But watch out for this player in dynasty leagues. He owns high-end offensive skills and the size to impact the game in different ways than an Ehlers or Connor can at their statures.

Vincent Trocheck is going to be a top 10 skater this season in multi-cat leagues that count faceoffs. Being a centre will drop his value, but his across-the-board ability is wildly underrated. He’s one of my favourite fantasy assets in these type of leagues.

preparedness and society after a catastrophic event. It's a bit long! I'm sure there is more I left out I guess we could call this my Hurricane Maria AAR As of the time of this writing, we are exactly one week post Maria. 2 days pre Hurricane Maria Landfall 1-The Puerto Rican water authority shut off residential water and drained the levies in preparation for the rains leaving residents with no water to use to prepare. After a large outcry, it was turned back on 12 hours pre impact allowing people to fill bath tubs and store what water they could. 2-We live about 2 hours from San Juan, a less populated part of the island. My wife is a full time S3 officer at a medium sized reserve center attached to a small Coast Guard base. We were trying to pick up some last minute luxury items to weather the storm and the Coast Guard informed full time Army that the essential items like water was for Coast Guard only and wouldn't let soldiers buy. I can understand shutting the Exchange down for retirees and non-active reservists, but to reject other full time military members is a disgrace in my eyes. Luckily for us, I'm quite a prepper and my wife is an Hurricane stalker, so we had already stocked up on all of the essentials prior to Irma and then re-stocked at the main Army base in San Juan the weekend before Maria hit. We had food and water and gas (35 gallons in cans and the genny plus both cars full). 1 Day Pre Hurricane Maria Landfall 1-All cell phone service was shut off prior to the storm impacting the island. A week later, cell phone services have still not been restored Island wide. 2-Power went down sometime in the night while we slept. We are not sure if it was shut down like the cell phones or if it was just the fragile (decrepit?) nature of the electrical grid in PR where it is a frequent event. Landfall! 1-With all communication shut down island wide prior to the impact of the hurricane, we were unaware that the path of the storm had shift and was making a B line for where we lived! (We didn't even know if it was striking as a Cat 4 or 5). We awoke at 0400 as the first hurricane force winds hit the house. We spent the next 20 hours bailing water out of the house. We were able to fill both bathtubs and was still throwing water out. It was running down the stairs and was several inches deep on the ground floor. All of our furniture, beds, chairs were soaked, but there was nothing to do for it as the storm hit us for a solid 24 hours with wind and rain. 2-We live in a nice neighborhood and rent a very nice house from a couple of Drs that got jobs in the states but did t want to sell it. So we were able to make a really good rental agreement with them. It was during this storm that it was driven home that they had cheaper out on a lot of things when they built it. A-the house has storm windows, but the owners failed to have them sealed properly. With the winds blowing, the water and rain pushed what little sealant there was out and the rain was blown into the house with very little resistance. As the storm came at us it flooded one part of the house, after it passed, it flooded the other side. I finally just gave up on the bottom floor and just focused on keeping the master bedroom where we spend most of our time from flooding too bad. B-the owners painted the inside of the house with latex paint. For anyone that has been to PR or Florida, most of the houses are made out of concrete. With the wind blowing water into the house, flooding under the doors and running down the walls, the water found a way to get under the latex paint and, in effect, flooded the walls themselves. There is water and big water bubbles all under the paint throughout the house. Once it is either stripped or they pop, water will once again be all over the house. The really bad part, after sitting it is going to be very moldy bad water that comes out. C-The balcony and roof drains had no type of covering to prevent debris from flowing into them, they were just open pipes set into the concrete. They were all clogged pretty early on and led to the first round of upstairs flooding. The first room flooded had a foam mattress that sucked up no telling how much water. I can barely move the thing even now! 3-If you have kids, entertaining them and keeping them safe and off the floors is a second chore! He's at the age he wants to be involved in all that we are doing and can only stand still watching videos and what not for so long. Post Hurricane Maria We went out about 48 hours after the storm trying to get to the base where my wife works. We were hoping that there would be a way to communicate with our families to let them know we were ok and my wife wanted to start getting accountability for her soldiers. It took us almost 2 hours to go the 6 miles to her job! The island was devastated!!! Power lines down everywhere, even the huge concrete ones! Trees uprooted! Homes collapsed! Landslides from the small mountains! 18 wheeler trailers flipped over! Fences, satellite dishes (like the huge dishes) blown free! I have never seen such devastation in such a short period of time. And I have NEVER seen such lack of preparation in my life!!! It would be common sense to thing an island that is frequently threatened by hurricanes would have plans in place for before, during and after the storm, not these ****ers! They were so ambivalent towards it because it had been over 30 years since the whole island had taken a direct hit by a storm. They normally only skirt the island and hit on side or another, so they thought that Maria would make a last minute turn and not impact the entire island. They couldn't have been more wrong!!! In addition, the lack of preparedness by the Army has me in a state of disbelief! It was 6 days before there was any communication with HQ in San Juan. 1-There was no satellite phone in the building! And we are talking about a BN sized reserve unit here! 2-There were only enough MREs and water staged for one bottle of water per day per soldier and 1 MRE (the center here is supplied out of the main base in San Juan). 3-When someone from HQ finally did show up with a sat phone, they confiscated the GSA vehicles here to take back to the main base and didn't bring any food and water for the soldiers here. Now a week later, we still have not been re-supplied by HQ. They are back fully functioning with water, power, internet and food while the soldier here are stuck with MREs. 4-There was no plan in place to get accountability of the soldiers after the storm. Granted there was no communication, but there wasn't even a message posted at the gate to give direction for those who may have showed up to check in or indicate that they were safe. 5-The General was activating units via AM radio! 6-The Coast Guard folks are a bunch of dicks! A-They were evacuating Coastie dependents, but when a soldier went to take his family to get them evacuated, they turned him away and the C130 left with over 100 empty seats!!! ****ers! There was some big coming to Jesus meeting between the CO for the Coast Guard and the Acting CO here right now and they let a few soldier family evacuate on their flights but have since stopped them after getting their people out. As of now, NORCOM has taken over but there has been no communication by the Army as to completing the evacuation of dependents from the island. B-They asked for Soldiers from my wife's unit to cook for the Coast Guard and Army, but they were wanting to charge the Soldiers $20 a day for the food while the Coasties ate free. Yea they were providing the food, but we were providing all of the cooks to prepare it all. A few of you guys remember my wife from way back in the LWRC Forum, she flipped her lid, grabbed me as her muscle and walked over to the Coast Guard station. Probably a good thing they weren't there at the time! 7-My wife is under the impression that dependents may be forced to evacuate the island due to the conditions and how it is deteriorating! So far I have resisted the attempts to try to get us to leave for a few reasons: A-I can't leave my wife here along when the Army has not set up a secure place for the soldiers on base. We live out in town and I have already seen people surveilling our neighborhood. I've been taking picture of plates of people that def don't belong and one neighbor told us last night that he woke up at midnight with someone shining a flashlight through the windows of his house. So since the Army isn't going to ensure her security, I will be here so we can watch each other's backs. We sleep light and armed and keep the house alarm battery charged and set at night. B-Our generator is heavy as hell and there is. I way my wife can get it where it needs to go by herself and I refuse to leave her in the dark and alone. She tells me she is a soldier and can take care of herself, but I explain that I'm a husband and a Marine and it's my job to take care of my family and shoot people in the face!!! 7-All in all I am very disappointed in the level of preparedness and the lack of take care of your Soldiers and families mentality that I have seen. 8-It is better to be prepared and not need it than need it and not be prepared. This is a huge issue on the island right now and the reason why so many people are already struggling a week after the event 9-It seems that we were left to deal with things on our own, unlike the aid that was sent en masse to TX and FL. Hell in FL they even evacuated all non essential military and their families, but not here General State of the Island and News 1-People are rioting at gas stations. Some stations give Military, First Responders, Drs and utilities head of the line access and last night the police had to detain people trying to go after those with front of the line privileges. These actions are forcing the owners to close the store. Police guard all the gas stations and escort fuel, food and water deliveries. Overall the state of the people on the island is deteriorating very quickly. Think Katrina on a scale of an entire island of almost 4 million. 2-Gas lines are on average 11 hours with people lining the roads the day before and sleeping in their cars. They are blocking roads and areas where utility workers are trying to work impeding progress. 3-A 1800-0600 curfew was put into effect to help combat people being on the streets 4-People are puncturing gas tanks of cars and draining the gas 5-We have reports of a soldier being kidnapped. Another center having issues with locals trying to get on the reserve center to steal supplies. 6-There is widespread looting and protests. 7-FEMA and the Red Cross still haven't made it to our side of the island and people are having to brace the drive to go get supplies. 8-There are an estimated 2000 bodies decomposing at hospitals that have no gas or generators running in the morgue 9-There was a major landslide up in the mountains with an unknown number of casualties, but estimates put the numbers between 200 and several thousand. 10-The dam for the main reservoir on our side of the island is near failure 11-Police and fire have no communications and are unable to respond to issues. 12-Electricity is estimated to be 6 months before it is back on and a year or more for the entire island 13-It is currently unknown when water will be back on 14-People are hanging signs begging for supplies since aid has not arrived here yet. Water is quickly becoming an issue all over our area. 15-Banks and ATMs are barely functioning limiting funds to $500 for account holders. People likes us with USAA are unable to draw out cash. 16-Even with a generator, we are unable to keep the fridge going because of gas being a scare commodity. 17-It is a cash only economy at this time Invaluable Items: 1-mops and buckets! 2-floor squeegee that we could push water with 3-handheld entertainment for the kiddo 4-water reserve with a pump (600 gallons). Properly rationed this will last us a couple months. Plus a Katadyn water filter for backup 5-GAS cans!!! We had over 30 gallons when it started and have still not used all of our supply 6-Generator-I would suggest a propane one. Less issues getting natural gas vs gasoline. More stable than gas and doesn't go bad. 7-The ability to wash clothes without a washer 8-Camp stove or gas griddle 9-Charcoal! We bought up a lot so we could cook on the grill. Was tons of it around so I guess people didn't consider that 10-Water storage and purification 11-Freeze dried camp food and MREs 12-Backup batteries to charge devices 13-Books!!! There is no much to do with everything shut down 14-Hatchet/hawk and/or large chopping knives/machete. With so many trees down areas needed to be cleared 15-Firearms-safety is becoming a real issue with each passing day. People are already fighting over limited supplies. Another two weeks and things will escalate further. 16-Lanterns/candles for light, though as it get more dangerous, light discipline will become important 17-matches/lighters 18-Bug Spray!!! After the storm mosquitoes are horrible!!! 19-water to flush the toilets!!! This is huge as they do not have water on base and the bathrooms are becoming a real health issue 20-AM/weather radio! 21-Extra Batteries!!!! 22-Frozen gallon bags of water to help keep the fridge 23-Bade (sp?) was very helpful as both a male and female urinal in the house. Needing no water we were wasting our resource to flush it. Just a little to clean it out at the end of the day Things I wish I had 1-battery powered fan! It gets hot as balls here at night and makes it hard to sleep. 2-a solar panel and rechargeable batteries for the lanterns and devices 3-More gas cans! 4-More cash on hand 5-More MREs and non-perishable food (I have enough food on hand to last another 4 weeks easy if rationed) 6-More ammo 7-Better AM/band radio 8-Sat phone/sat data. It was almost a week before we could let people know we were ok 9-HAM radio! 10-Wet Vac 11-Holsters for every pistol!" UPDATED 10-1-17 Coming to the end of another week, next week will be 2 weeks post storm. Just a little update for everyone. We are still doing ok with water, food and gas for the generator. We finally totally gave up on trying to keep the fridge going. Was burning a lot of gas and we can't leave the generator running at night due to a theft concerns. Have some nice neighbors who brought us some milk, water and cereal for Peanut. Were able to return the gesture when we were able to get in and buy a few things on base. Gas lines are still crazy at the stations that still have gas, many do not. We still haven't seen FEMA or the Red Cross on our side of the island. Seems that all of the aid is centered around San Juan and our side of the island and hat was hit the hardest has been forgotten. I have mostly been checking messages and such and not really looking at news and all that, but what I have seen is pretty sickening, everything being turned into political maneuvering while people go hungry and thirsty. Take care of the people first then play your games. Thanks to everyone who has sent messages checking on us or contributed to the fund that some good buddies set up for us to help with the recovery and living expenses of the world we find ourselves in at the moment. We are making it, we are survivors!

Incoming Category 2 Hurricane & You're Chasing a Bird Under Furniture

Nora wrote this post but my introduction is from someone who has been there - us. June 23rd 2005 Windy City Parrot burned to the ground - long story. If you have a pet bird or any pet for that matter - what’s your plan in an emergency? Floods, fires, frogs, locusts? Sure you’re on your game with the latest high-tech smoke and high water sensors in your home but let me quote from some recent headlines. 6/25/15 Boston - New England Record Snow Tracker: Boston Breaks All Time Seasonal Snow Record in 2014-2015 (What's your backup heat source?) 8/29/15 Florida - Governor: State of Emergency Still In Effect For Florida as Erika Remnants Approach 7/17/15 Illinois - Tornadoes reported in part of Illinois (Cameron, a town of about 600 people that's roughly 200 miles southwest of Chicago. I feel strongly that it’s always good to hope for the best than prepare for the worst - Nora’s got it right - please heed her cautions We dodged the bullet this week here in Central Florida. The recent Tropical Storm Erika caused storm predictions that showed one possible track where the storm became a Category Two hurricane before making landfall anywhere from Miami to Jacksonville. Our governor had declared the entire state of Florida in a state of emergency before Erika blew apart in the islands. Lives were lost while this system was only a tropical storm, so it definitely had my attention. We missed this one, but many times we haven’t been so lucky. I’ve had to evacuate a few times because I choose the beach lifestyle. It’s just one of the prices I pay for living so close to my beloved ocean. There are others, too, but I consider it worth it. I live about 80 steps from the dune crossover in Cape Canaveral. No, I’m not in one of those million dollar ocean front homes. But there are only three of those between me and the ocean, offering tons of debris to hit our modest apartment building should a big storm surge hit. I’m upstairs but in a big storm, that’s no real protection and means our roof could come off from the winds.

I’d consider staying for a Category One hurricane, but anything stronger means going at least to the mainland or further based on the storm strength and path. This building has withstood many hurricanes over the years since it was built, probably in the early 60’s during the space boom. I can’t guarantee it would last through another though and won’t risk my life on the gamble. Besides, for a major storm, evacuation becomes mandatory. Hurricane season extends from June 1 to November 30 but hurricanes, also called tropical cyclones, can form any time of year. The official season dates reflect only when weather records indicate the conditions are most likely to exist to allow formation of a tropical weather system. In the years I’ve lived here, it seems the Labor Day weekend, or just before or after is a prime time for storm development. You may not worry about hurricanes because you live miles and miles from a beach. But there isn’t a part of the country that doesn’t have some type of hazard, whether it is blizzards, mud slides, earthquakes, wild fires, tornadoes or hurricanes. Even a strong Northern Easterner can damage homes. The point is evacuation kits are critical for every home, no matter what you call yours or what your area’s hazard happens to be. Mine is a hurricane evacuation kit. I have one for me and my partner and I have one for the birds too. As Labor Day weekend peeks around the corner, I am reminded that we are entering the peak of hurricane season. This means that parrot parents should double check that they have on hand supplies to cover the needs of their parrots should a major storm develop. I checked my supplies on the 1st of June when the season arrived and I always recheck around Labor Day and update supplies. This year predictions were that this would be a strong year for the Pacific West Coast weather phenomena known as “El Nino”. Meaning “Little Boy”, this phenomena occurs when warmer currents in the Pacific Ocean affect global weather patterns, resulting in reduction of the surface water temperature in the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. The Pacific coastline enjoyed some much-needed rainfall, especially considering California has experienced 4 consecutive years of drought.

Tropical systems that can develop into hurricanes are born over in the warm water of the Atlantic, often off the coast of Africa. The hotter the surface water temperature in the Atlantic and the longer the system has over open water, the more it can feed off the warm water, forming a convection that becomes a hurricane. When residents of the East Coast initially hear the forecast for hurricane season, a sigh of relief can be heard when El Nino is expected to be strong. Once the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration releases projections, residents of hurricane-prone beaches and flood zone areas could become complacent, perhaps doing only doing a check on supplies left over from last year. It can be all too easy for those who have lived along the beaches and haven’t seen what a severe hurricane can do yet. It’s important to remember that during El Nino years, the number of storms may be light but those that come through can often be extra-strong. Hurricane Andrew developed in an El Nino year. Hurricane David in 1979, the first hurricane I experienced here was also in a strong El Nino year. Fortunately it did little damage, coming in as a Category One.

The opposite of El Nino is La Nina. In these years, we watch out because hurricane development can be more likely and more storms tend to develop into hurricanes. Enough science lesson, thought. Let’s get into what happens if one actually develops and it’s headed toward us. We may not be the bull’s eye but even miles away a big hurricane can cause damage along feeder bands. I keep an emergency kit ready all the time. My birds’ kit contains one month of food supplies. When I purchase new food supplies, I rotate with ones in the emergency kit out and replace them with the freshest food so that my supplies are fresh all the time. Far too many people just place a supply of food for evacuation into their supplies and never change the supply. No matter if you feed seed or pellets, they go bad after a while, get mothy and the birds don’t get the nutrition they need from the food. As a minimum, the parrot food stock in any emergency kit should be changed out every three months.

Depending on why you might need to evacuate should dictate the amount of food you keep in your kit. While history tells me I won’t need to be away more than a day or three at the most (that one the hurricane followed me and I had to ride it out on the mainland far north of here), I remember Hurricane Andrew where there were no stores in Miami left standing to restock parrot food or anything else.

An aside here: After Andrew, Kennedy Space Center prepared a caravan of semi-trailers to carry supplies and I sent all the birds seed in various sizes I could afford to contribute. The other parrot parents I knew also joined me in sending parrot supplies so hundreds of pounds of parrot food of all types joined the people, dog and cat supplies going to help the stranded victims. But it was some time before stores reopened to provide a supply chain to parrot owners. We tried to ensure that every car then went south also carried at least one big bag of parrot food. As soon as I could, I filled my car with nothing but bird supplies and headed there myself. The destruction left me in awe. I’d never seen anything as horrible before or since. A bit off topic, but I found it interesting that Parrot Jungle, my favorite stop in Miami, didn’t lose a single one of their hundreds of parrot or non-parrot birds in the Andrew disaster. Parrots went home with people in cages and the large flock of pink flamingos was herded into the large restrooms and the exits were blocked. The property sustained damage but no lives were lost. Now, let’s get back on topic.

Gustavo Rodriguez with daughter in Parrot Jungle in 1984 In my emergency evacuation kit, I also have an extra first aid kit for the birds stashed in their evacuation kit. This first aid kit is a bit different than the one I use around the house. It also has grooming items in it in case we don’t return home or don’t have a home for a while. I make sure at this time of year that the powder or gel for quickly stopping bleeding has not become outdated. It’s replaced when it nears expiration. I have an extra clean empty plastic spray bottle available. Should we be stuck here in the heat with no power and the birds become too hot, a cooling shower can keep their body temperatures from going into the fatal zone. Since my parrots get along together, I have a single travel cage they can evacuate in. While it isn’t ideal for long term living due to its small size, if we had no home to return to, they could survive in this cage for as long as they had to until we could either get home or get somewhere that would allow us to begin to set up again. AN EMERGENCY IS NOT THE TIME TO FIND OUT YOUR BIRD IS AFRAID OF A TOWEL AND IT'S TRAVEL CARRIER. You don't want to have this conversation with your bird while F3 tornados are touching down across town Everything else my birds would need is contained in the human evacuation supplies. Water can be shared. Towels and paper products are in our supplies. If you don’t know what to put in an emergency kit for your area, you can learn from www.ready.gov all about preparing basic emergency kits. The only things I would grab on a last minute basis is whatever kinds of fresh food I happen have on hand that do not have to be refrigerated. Fruit and fresh vegetables come along for use by us and sharing with the birds. If I had a bird on medication, I’d also be sure that was included but fortunately that isn’t the case at this time. Don’t count on going to the store at the last minute to stock up. Although we have several large grocery stores and a few pet shops, the shelves are empty within hours of the announcement that we are located in the “cone” of possible landfall. Keep your supplies stocked when you do your regular shopping so you don’t end up in the fight for the last water, canned tuna or bag of bird food. Wherever you live, whatever may befall you and your birds, be prepared.
