tbqh, i hate lalura. I dont want it to become canon. Because everytime theres a kids show focused on a group if teenagers, the two most “normal” seem to “fall in love get married have babies” ect. Now im not saying lance and allura are normal, and they are very 3 dimensional as characters. tbh i love them individually, and so it sucks even worse that i know, deep down as a writer, that they have really, really good chemistry. The people they were at the beggining of the series never would have actually wound up together, and their chemistry is slow to form as they slowly change as people. Its kinda great. but the problem is this show could have still had a relationship like that, AND had main character repressentation.

I ship Klance not because it has great chemistry, but because in the first 3 seasons, they had incredible potential to build chemistry. Enemies to friends, Friends to buddies in combat, buddies to lovers as not-straight teenagers. Klance as a potential hasnt been in the series at all since season 4 or 5 to be quite honest, and im kinda scared thats on purpose because of the amount of the fandom that was interpreting it as gay whether the studio meant it to be or not. But the fact is, having these two boys build chemistry and at least try to date (even if it doesnt work out!) would have been really, really nice. Lance and allura are the two most normal, because allura is a girl who, while being a fighter, wears pink (even if thats basically gothic for an altean), is highly compassionate (dont get me wrong, i love that about her, its an incredible balance to a lot of the harsh decisions and hot tempers on the show), and trusted, and fell in love with the enemy, then had her hesrt broken. Lance is normal mostly in his outward persona. he’s actually charming, because cheesy pickup lines are funny as shit, (and everyone knows it, so i can honestly say i dont know many girls who dont take (INNOCENT) cheesy pickup lines as a compliment, like, “someone saw me, thought i was pretty, wanted to make me smile, and obviously this single line isnt gonna make me fall head of over heels, so its all in good fun”), he’s apparently conventionally attractive, is a good fighter, and isnt really as dumb as he seems.

They are two clear hero and heroine archetypes, thats what i mean by normal. now thats not to say that they arent very good characters, they are and i love them, but, why is it that the two most “normal” are the only ones who ever find love? Again, dont get me wrong, i have loved pretty much every single character on this show, even coran, the comedic relief there to make kids laugh, has an actually incredible storyline and is a fully fleshed out character. But lets face it, for as incredible as every character is —pidge is a gender non-conforming (dresses like a dude and dont give a sht), geek girl who us incredible with computers, building tech, and anything that has to do with computer science engineering for that matter, is good at fighting, fights smatter not harder. Hunk is a boy who is friendly and cares deeply for other people, even if he hasn’t known them that long. he is very scared a lot of the time, but also incredibly brave. he’s physically large, and loves cooking just for fun, or to make himself or others feel better. He’s not a typical “man chef”, he loves cooking the same way my 76 y/o itallian grandmother loves cooking, because it is simply enjoyable, and can make people feel good. Keith is mixed-species and has a very, very short temper. Yes he’s matured, gets frustrated slower and has more patients with good people and can make less rash decisions, but that doesnt change those facts. Shiro is disabled (some of the time) and apparently gay, though its only heavily implied for about 39 seconds screen time MAX and then never discussed again. You know how often these types of characters get hapoy endings? never. keiths character dies sacrificing himself for others, or becomes addicted to somethjng. pidge will be “happy on her own”, and be alone, any romantically happy ending for hunk would be shown in the last two minutes of the series with him being soft and dopey in love. Shiro’s character type would focus heavily on their own self-rediscovery plot, and their happy ending for the story is that they’re happy with themselves and their circumstances finally. If its not happy its because his character type is dead by the end of it.

Thats always how it seems to be.

But lance and allura? they’ll find esch other, their happy ending is front and center for everyone.

So, great writing, absolutely incredible writing if im being honest, but how about changing things up?

from the get-go, build keith and lance’s cjaracters and keep building their chemistry, one day their banter becomes less severe, and theres mlre smiles. Give me a teenage gay couple that isnt perfect, and who have their fears and their doubts but understand that each if them has similar thoughts snd fears.

From the get go give me shiro who is fighting for his own self identity after galra inprisonment , give me allura trying to figure out wjo she is and what to do now that ten thousand ((TEN THOUSAND?!)) years has passed for her in the blink of an eye. me me tje two of them growing closer through a shared understanding of each others troubles, gove shiro still have all of his personal plot points, but have allura by his side. ((keeep adam even, make him bi!))

or even just, give pidge an innocent and cute romantic subplot, make lance actually bi, just do something, anything, that doesnt make it seem like you’re saying only specific, neurotypical, normal, straight, and conventionally attractive characters get to find love. like come on, you had to kill adam? wtf. of all the shows to kill the gay, this was one? thats absolutely ridiculous.

Tl;dr? Lalurra is an incredibly well written and fully fleshed out romantic subplot, that as a writer, i admire and respect; but it’s bullshit because of where the show was headed sessons 1&2, what it could have been, and what it took a sharp turn away from. It could’ve been so much more without sacrificing ANY individual development, and they chose not too. They took a step away from the lgbt community, and from any chance of breaking current societal norms, and tried to make uo for it by calling pink goth and having a character we JUST met say something that really best friends can say with no problem that we’re ment to interpret as gay. I lvoed season 7, but this is why im mad.

I heard some spout out how Lance and Allura’s romance is bad because it pushes the stereotype that if you flirt with a girl enough, they will fall in love with you. But I don’t think that’s really the case. Instead Allurance reminds me a lot of James and Lily from the Harry Potter series.

In the series, James was a clever, charming person, who’s fun to be around. Despite that, James didn’t give off a good first impression. He was arrogant, even Snape said it was like criticism bounced off of him. He would often hex other students for the hell of it, including Snape. Like Lotor, Snape wasn’t an innocent snowflake and was friends with a group of people, who later went on become Death Eaters. A lot of these traits came about through his pampered upbringing. Lily was turned off by these traits, seeing him only as arrogant and obnoxious. The fact that James pinned and chased after Lily didn’t help things either. 

Over time, her views of James changed when he became a better person and showed his true self. James stopped picking on others and was always there for his friends, wanting to help others and fight for the greater good. It was only then that Lily started dating him and fell in love with him.

The relationship between Allura and Lance seems in a similar vain to me. While Lance wasn’t a bully like James, he was very cocksure, arrogant, insecure and flirted with every alien girl he thought was attractive. His first interaction with Allura was him flirting with her. He also had a one sided rivalry with Keith, because of his inferiority complex.

This is okay. Because Lance grew out of these traits and became a better person.

For one, Lance legitimately completely got over his playboy phase, and acknowledging that his feelings for Allura were so much deeper and real. He never made a move on Romelle once. The Lance from s1 would’ve made a move on Romelle by now. 

Right after Lotor betrays the team, he never makes Allura feel guilty or uses it as some sort of opportunity to make a move on her. He’s focused on making sure she knows none of this is her fault and that he’ll always be there for her.

Lance also doesn’t pick fights with Keith anymore, respecting his leadership and place as second in command.

Lance became a stronger and noble warrior. He even sacrificed himself to save Allura at one point. 

It was only after all Lance changed that Allura returned his feelings. Even now, he never forced himself on Allura and let her come to her own decision. Lance also seems to doubt he is even an romantic option for her. 

So yeah, instead of their love story being one based on Lance pestering her hard enough that Allura fell in love with him, it’s one based on Allura only returning Lance’s feelings once he became a better person. 

(Come to think of it, their romance is like Belle and Adam’s from Beauty and the Beast as well…except Lance never transforms into a monster.)

Unpopular upinion from a feminist... I’m part of the problem where the Fandom ignores female characters in favor of gay ships, often fetishizing them. Why? Because the female characters in a lot of the more “nerdy” (boy nerd gatekept) have really shitily female characters I dont understand at all and/or fuckin hate. Like...

An example.

Voltron. I ship klance. I loved allura, and in S1 i HIGH KEY shipped either her amd Shiro or her and (fungers crossed) some unintroduced fenale character. She was MY GIRL. And hell yeah pidge you funky little nonconforming star. I love you! The biggest reason I shipped klance is cause, they had a really, really good fire&ice thing going on, and slowly but surely were growing closer at LEAST as friends. Yea lance had a HUGE crush on allura, but sje had no interest in him so cross my fingers my precious little blue bi boy could find an eventually healthy and fun relationship with keith, who could hopefully learn more about himself and become happier.

And then the script took a darker turn and my hopes stayed the same but I got hooked on plot like a junkie on crack. then after season 4 i took a long look at the previous seasons and i realized, oh. That’s why I hate allura now. oh. Thats why I dont ship klance on screen. oh. Thats why the teams behavior towards keith is pissing me the fuck off. Because it was just so, remotely out of character. Allura NEVER had issues asking for help or for recomendations, and the team was ALWAYS there for her, then she gets in the blue lion and THATS the reason she has issues piloting the blue lion?!?!?! Them later, I get her hatred of the galra... but hating keith??? She KNOWS him. He’s sacrificed and dedicated himself so MUCH of himself to her cause, and she thinks news of his heritage will make him turn on her??? Like, I get the IDEA, BUT, if keith KNEW he was galra, id really get it. BUT HE DIDN’T!!!! AS FAR AS HE KNOWS, AND AS FAR AS HIS LOYALTIES GO, HE’S HUMAN! Yes, eventually he and everyone come to accept who he is. But allura, the loving and caring, but also strong and highly intelligent allura, I KNOW she wouldn’t respond like that. She is not a hateful person, and i REFUSE to believe she never once met a kind galra. Then theres Coran, he is her advissor, and much her elder and a much wiser one at that. And it is CANON he PERSOANALLY knew kinda galra. There is no way allura would have held her distrust of keith so long. She is more than smart enough to know that the reason many galra act the way they do is because they are indoctrinated to act that way. And keith, has NOT been indoctrinated. He just happens to hold half of their DNA, and therefore some traits and instincts. As a literal BIOLOGY MAJOR, imma tell you right now, INSTINCTS DONT TELL YOU TO RANDOMLY KILL YOUR FRIENDS, AND DNA DONT DO SHIT TO YOUR PERSONALITY AFTER CRITICAL DEVELOPMENTAL YEARS UNLESS YOU EXPERIENCE A SHIT LOAD OF TRAUMA AND IK WAR IS TRAUMA BUT THERE IS NO WAY HE’D SUDDENLY SHIFT GODDAMN ALLIANCES.

and I maintain that allura is easily smart enough to understand that.

A better arc? People they encountering in space having a problem with keith being galra, and allura and the team helping reassure him until he is comfortable in his heritage. Deal with racism and self esteem in a way that makes sense. So i started hating allura’s character, and that anyone would ship lance with her. cause lance was a character i thought was still really in character. I still liked lance, amd i still liked keith. So even though they had no on-screen chemistry or one-on-one positive relations, I still shipped them. I still saw the possible healthy and hapoy relationship that season 1 (and even 2!) hinted could be possible! So I’m a klamce shipper, and I actively dislike the character allura has been for the past couple of seasons (And I didnt even mind her falling for lotor, hell that actually made sense!), though I know she is getting better. But I still had Lalura. In my oppinion, it doesn’t have good, unproblematic chemistry until this past season. And it just... doesnt work in my head.

Now lets compare this.

It’s such a problematic show lmao.

But.

It’s consistent. Lucy Heartfielia has always been a perky, funny, fanservice character who loves her friends and will do anything to protect and save them. She and Natsu have real, on-screen chemistry. AND THAT NEVER STOPPED! Her charicterization was always consistent, and made sense. Nothing ever seemed out of character about her. I had no reason to hate her without sympathy.

Natsu and Gray are also (literally) fire and ice. That is literally their magic. But, i dont ship them for canon. Sure, its fun to explore their relationship in fanworks, but i think their REAL rivalry (as opposed to lance and keiths, which one can really analyse to be lance not knowing how to interpret slightly gay feelings cause lord lnows all us gay children felt that way about our crushes) is actually the basis of a really good, brother-close friendship. Its very, very well written and I love that.

Thanks to those two things, i really, really ship NaLu, even years after the show went on hiatus.

And i just, sometimes I look at a fandom and worry about my own behavior, but then I look at shows as a fellow writer, and my own behavior makes a LOT more sense. Now I know there are an unfortunately large amount of fans who do overlook female characters, and fetishize gay ships. But I also know a lot of us are just gay kids and teens looking and making theories for any rep we can get. And we happen to have really high standarda for content, thanks to a few very good shows amd a few adult fanfic writers who have written our favorite 500,000 word fanfics.

I just, I cant wait. I cant wait until its all of us out their writing our stories, and sharing them with the world when the current writers are our producers. Because then, I think, we may finally be able to show the world as it is. Full of different, diverse people who love in so many different ways. Cause I sure as hell am trying hard to make my own stories better.

If you want to read this series, go back and read the Big Bad Wolf series first. The werewolves there are very much relevant  with the 13 Kings that will found their queens eventually. So… peg back a little so you can better understand everything :)

Soooo how do I start? 13 Kings equates to 13 Queens and 13 supernatural realms! Yes, magic, magic, magic! Give me more maaaaggggiiiccccc!!!! :D I enjoy reading this series and I’m still a little bit salty about the cliffhanger since Book 11-13 is not yet released! Uuuggghhh the suspense of knowing who that damn traitor is. After all the betrayal and deaths, I cant wait!

Heather-Killough Walden really improved her writing in this series.The pace isn’t as fast as before and more depth for the characters. The little details in describing the different realms are also amazing as well. I love that the old characters are still interrelated to the new ones and the mysteries to be solved are endless! Don’t even forget the deaths! I think this had been the only series I read which had the most number of resurrected people. Thank God for the Warlock King and Lalura Chantelle. Seriously, when will I know what and who is Lalura Chantelle really is?! And that damn traitor! Ughhhh! I can’t handle the suspense T.T

Overall, this is one hell of a magical series. The Kings are alphas of all alpha men and the Queens are just bad-ass as well. Oh did I mention the villain in this series? At first we just have the annoying hunters, then we got another ancient vampires! After that the Gods were revealed and now we fight the unknown called the Entity. Seriously, the war is never ending until the 13 queens are found. I hope its not over yet since the Kings being chopped one by one. I am not even sure if we have complete 13 men by the end of this series.
