2024 Book #157
Title: Strange the Dreamer Author: Laini Taylor Genre: Fantasy, YA Series: Strange the Dreamer, Book 1
The dream chooses the dreamer, not the other way around--and Lazlo Strange, war orphan and junior librarian, has always feared that his dream chose poorly. Since he was just five years old, he's been obsessed with the mythic lost city of Weep, but it would take someone bolder than he to cross half the world in search of it. Then a stunning opportunity presents itself, in the form of a hero called the Godslayer and a band of legendary warriors, and he has to seize his chance or lose his dream forever.  What happened in Weep two hundred years ago to cut it off from the rest of the world? And who is the blue-skinned goddess who appears in Lazlo's dreams?
Rating: 4.75 ⭐
Quick thoughts: loved the writing, this was so immersive. characters were excellent, layered, and complex. prolly the only reason this wasn't 5 ⭐ is bc i'm a bit heartless and am like "young love? happy for you now get me back to the plot" 😅😅😅

this post is going to be under construction for forever, basically.
Tumblr media
i haven't decided on my fake name yet. i live in chicago but i'm leaving soon. late twenties. male. i hold an MFA in creative writing and a BA in game development.
i write fantasy, primarily dark fantasy, but am also interested in urban fantasy and historical fantasy. i have a decade of experience writing and posting fanfic in many different fandoms.
my writing focuses on themes of masculinity and homophobia, transness, sexuality and kink, disability, and gay love/romance.
i speak english and have a questionable grasp of french and czech. i am studying norwegian and old norse/icelandic.
i'm open to tag games and the like but it will probably take me a minute to get to them.
Tumblr media
fiction: i'm really passionate about YA lit, even though i'm not writing any right now. my favorite YA authors are laini taylor, alex london (yes, the one plagiarized by james somerton), and margaret rogerson.
my favorite (adult) fiction authors are cathrynne m. valente, ursula k. le guin, and brandon sanderson. my favorite nonfiction authors are neil price, richard preston, and lindsey fitzharris.
film: my favorite directors are masaaki yuasa, robert eggers, and the wachowski sisters. my favorite films are cloud atlas (2012), ravenous (1999), mind game (2004), pom poko (1994), and trick or treat (1986).
i love B movies, and i have a growing collection of DVD movie packs and vinegar syndrome special editions. i have the oversized "champagne and bullets" poster hanging on my wall, and i own the miami connection soundtrack on vinyl. i am one of the only people on earth unironically interested in the history of shot-on-video movies.
music: anything in the "alternative" sphere, but i have a special fondness for folk punk and psychobilly/horrorpunk. my favorite bands are the mountain goats, AJJ, florence + the machine, aganst me!, editors, and baroness.
study/academic topics: my thesis is largely inspired by my passion for viking/medieval scandinavian history and culture. i am studying old norse/old icelandic, in the hopes of being able to read the sagas in their original language.
i love medical history and know everything there is to know about WWI-era facial reconstructive surgery, and plan to write a story about it someday (i was into it before the fitzharris book, goddammit!). i will read any nonfiction book about a part of medical history, whether it's a specific disease or a technique or field.
other: lake superior and the minnesota north shore, minnesota public radio, food culture and food writing, candles and incense that smell like the woods, tattoos that look like woodcuts, collecting enamel pins, travel patches, and mosser cats, fiber arts.
Tumblr media
my thesis: a grand-scale dark fantasy novel about a misanthropic wizard academic and an alcoholic viking mercenary trying to save the world. main themes: cultural homophobia, misogyny, and machismo and the way they affect gay men, fascism and surviving under hostile systems, sacrifice and what makes a world worth saving, languages and the way they affect our lives, romance.
vampire story: a short story about a vampire that works at hot topic befriending a community college student in 2007. main themes: being suicidal and what makes life worth living, connection, romance.
viking story: a short horror story about a viking that gets stuck in a cave while searching for his unrequited love, who may or may not be dead. main themes: homophobia and machismo, grief and mourning.
i don't like naming things.
Tumblr media
i don't care who follows me.
this blog is occasionally NSFW.
if you post a lot about political issues, i will not follow you. this is because i am here for fun, not to be angry, depressed, homicidal, or suicidal. if you do not like that, get bent. it will not change.
if you are weird to me, i will block you.
if you, under any circumstances, refer to me or any of my male characters as baby, baby girl, girlie, bitch, princess, or any other infantilizing, misogynistic horseshit, i will block you.
that's it.

Join me tomorrow night for a livestream conversation with the brilliant Laini Taylor. We plan to talk about books and writing, but really, we just want to show off our cool Owl Crate editions to each other.
Please be prepared to type a lot of ooooh's and aaaah's into the chat box.
To watch live, you'll need to download the OwlCrate app which I believe is free. The recorded event will be available to members at thenest.owlcrate.com. Again, you can sign up to be a member for free.

WIP Questionaire Tag Game
Thanks @jackiezenauthor for the tag!
On a bit of a The Second Coming run so I'll use that for this.
What was the first part of your wip that you created?
The first chapter? Haha so this is probably the 4th or 5th time we've re-written/re-done this story. The first version was about 120 hand written pages long, spewed out over a few weeks in high school. We then re-wrote the whole thing, it wound up being 150k+ words so we decided to turn it into a trilogy, and that's where we're at. But we very much started at the beginning, with chapter
2. If your story was a TV show, what would the theme song/intro be?
Bleeding out by Imagine Dragons. ID is pretty much the soundtrack for this story, and was the main music we listened to while we wrote it and so they're always indelibly tied together in my mind. But this song sort of sums up the vibe really well to me.
3. Who are your favorite characters you've made? Why?
Belial is definitely a fan favourite for us. He was never really meant to be a main character - he was a side character! He was just an NPC! But somehow he ended up becoming vital to the story and then the next thing you know he's a POV character. Belial is such a great character because he's so complex. He's a good person! Kind of! But he isn't afraid to do what needs to be done and if that means doing things that aren't so savoury, he's willing to do that. He's loyal to those he thinks are deserving, he's brave when he thinks it'll make a difference. He's also extremely hot.
4. What other pieces of media do you think would share a fanbase for your story?
Hmmm interesting. I mean, I don't love the comparison but fans of Cassandra Clare would probably enjoy TSC because it does have similar feels and themes. Potentially also Laini Taylor? Anyone who likes modern fantasy? Maybe Good Omens fans too, though we're not nearly as funny haha.
5. What has been your biggest struggle while writing?
Oh my god the editing. Honestly we are in editing hell right now and it's just excruciating. It's so disheartening to have to throw big chunks of writing in the bin and have to write the scene again because it wasn't quite right.
6. Are there any animals in your story? Talk about them!
There aren't really, which is kinda weird because we're both huge animal lovers.
7. How do your characters get around?(ex: trains, horses, cars, dragons, etc.)
Mostly in Merry's beat up old Kia.
8. What part of your wip are you working on?
Currently doing editing/rewrites on Anarchy, book two of the trilogy, a rough draft of which we spat out during a writing holiday back in 2020 and haven't had time to get back to.
9. What aspects (tropes, maybe?) of your wip do you think will draw people in?
We definitely have a couple of good ships, lots of action and great fight scenes, but I think (hope?) the characters are what people will enjoy. We want people to love our characters, to want to know more about them, to spend more time with them.
10. What are your hopes for your wip?
Honestly, publication with this one! We really think it has the chops to go the distance, we just need to find someone willing to take a chance on us. Or, for our podcast to get popular enough that we have a chance to self pub. Whatever works!

(September 24th - September 30th)
Lots of exciting things going on this past week. Was able to head out to an apple orchard to get some good eats and generally ring in the fall festive season. I have a feeling the apple cider doughnuts, peanut butter fudge, and pumpkin cake I picked up are not going to last long.
I also ran the first meeting of my work library's anime club, which had a fairly decent turnout. The teens were enthusiastic, ate up all the snacks, and had fairly good suggestions as to how to better structure the club. Now I have to think of some more games/activities for them just so we're not just watching stuff. I was thinking of things like Taboo (describe the anime without using words from the title), cooperative model/figurine building, various crafts, etc. Naturally they were a little bummed that we couldn't watch stuff like Chainsaw Man, Attack on Titan, Tokyo Ghoul, since the teen space is a PG 13 space and those shows are WAY too gory. Hopefully I can find/rec some stuff that's similar but a little toned down.
