#kendo motogp au

Somewhat martial arts adjacent, but I used to do recurve bow archery (fuck compound bows, all my homies hate compound bows) until my vision failed me but I feel like my boy Luca would be doing it live
(I do fear he'd be doing some fuckass draw like a pinch draw or something because even in this universe they gotta get compartment syndrome)
(this is in relation to @whatwepostintheshadows's aikido au and your note about kendo)
โฆ h I swear you read my mind. Somewhere deep in my drafts I have a lucalex archery and kendo fic with Luca doing recurve bow archery and Alex doing kendo. Itโs a cool but somewhat fucked up fic idea Iโve been toying with for years (not with this specific pairing but yeah) because guess what my crazy ex used to do as a sport? Yeah we had a lot of jokes about how we were a cool warrior couple (both doing weapon related sports/martial arts) and I had a whole plot drafted but yeah might be a bit too personal for me

#wait as a person who has done kendo for almost a decade#this aikido au has tickled a part of my brain <- HELLO FELLOW MARTIAL ART NERD I'M SO HAPPYYYY
#(kendo is different to aikido and I think motoGP riders would hate its rigid rules and regulations) <- i don't know much about kendo either unfortunately except that it does seem to be much more codified than whatever we're doing in aikiken.... but on the other hand, imagine giving any of the riders a sword
Yeah so there are two regional distinctions, there is korean kumdo and japanese kendo. Actual sparring rules are basically the same, but the styles are very different.
Kumdo is more agressive, puts a strong emphasis on scoring points and strength, while Kendo generally puts a strong emphasis on proper form an zanshin.
Kendo in nature comes from the practices of samurai and therefore is militaristic and has series of rules. There is a proper way to carry the sword, a proper way to walk, a proper way to bow, a proper way to enter the fighting ring, basically a rule for everything.
But because its been around for centuries it has undergone a lot of change and styles.
Like if any motoGP rider was to have my style it would be Dani Pedrosa. My style is very proper, strong, and I like to maintain proper form even when sparring. That means I generally taken as above my level during normal practices, but in actual tournaments, because I'm short and thinner than most people in my age group I struggle to win (generally getting 2nd and 3rd but only have half a dozen gold medals to my name)
But yeah, style is heavily dependent on whether you do kendo or kumdo, as well as your teacher's.
ALSO we have two types of swords in Kendo, shinai and bokutล tho I have also seen some people use unsharped metal katanas instead of a bokutล (not common though its like old people who use them sometimes, like traditionalists)
