You know what? I really want to talk about this.
Katya is already so dismissed in the film. No one even calls her by her last name, when she signs in the film you can see she signs as Katya Goncharova, which is what you do with your last name in Russia if you're a woman. Instead, every man in the film addresses her as Katya Goncharov, and having seen her sign her name it's clear that this wasn't a mistake in Scorcese's part.
She's a complex human being (and the best character, in my opinion) but no one gives a shit. All they know is that she's hauntingly beautiful, literally "the fairest woman in the city". She's already so male gazey, like Beth Harmon in the Queen's Gambit when she's having a breakdown but she's still looking perfect and even seductive, mysterious. When I see these "Lana del Rey Marlboro queen dark feminine urge" Katya edits I just... That's not her, and you really missed the point because the film acknowledges that there's so much more going on with her but they don't even give her enough screen time to show it and develop her.
Katya wasn't a girlboss mastermind seductress. Men use that excuse to justify some vile shit in the story, because fucking typical. She wasn't dark red lisptick, cigarrette aesthetic, black heels, sad girl quote. Don't reduce her to that.
I am THIS 👌🏻 CLOSE to becoming a youtube essayist and making a video called "Goncharov in 2022 and the Girlbossification of Katya"

Is it true that Helga Sinclair's (Atlantis: The Last Empire, 2001) character design was heavily influenced by Katya Goncharova's (Goncharov, 1973) aesthetic?
