Kanailal Dutta

Kanailal Dutta (30 August 1888 – 10 November 1908) was a revolutionary in India's freedom struggle belonging to the Jugantar group. He was born in Chandannagar, West Bengal. He, along with Satyendranath Bose, was convicted by the British for the assassination of Narendranath Goswami, an approver of the British, in the Jail hospital of Alipore Central Jail on 31 August 1908. Satyendranath Bose was hanged till death on 21 November 1908.

Draupadi a play by Kalakshetra Manipur is based on a short story by Mahashweta Devi which director Heisnam Kanhailal brought it on the political scenario of Manipur. The play ends on a high note where Draupadi (Heisam Sabitri), after being repeatedly raped by army officials, disrobes herself as an act of protest. The play was staged for first time in 2000. People criticized for nudity on stage and in public space. Some feminist of Manipur came out strongly against portrayal of nudity on stage. Even the Meira Paibis of Manipur voiced against the act. Heisnam Sabitri says as an artist she felt the impulse or need to convey the message as she has done. People saw only nudity and couldn't grasp the message of the artiste. In 2004, Meira Paibis of Manipur staged a naked protest in front of Kangla Fort which was then occupied by the Assam Rifle, against the brutal killing and rape of Thangam Manorama. "She was found dead with multiple gun shot injuries on her private parts and thighs at Ngariyan Yairipok Road, hardly two km away from a police station after she was picked up by Assam Rifles team. The judicial inquiry report on the murder of Thangjam Manorama, a Manipuri girl, in 2004, handed over to the Supreme Court recently after being kept under wraps for over a decade, reveals the “brutal and merciless torture” by a 17 Assam Rifles team." This is a landmark in the history of world theatre and womanhood.
