"Um..." A small voice stuttered behind Kanata.

"Yes?" Kanata whirled around to see a small girl, who couldn't have been more than seven years old. Her bright blond hair was done in low, messy pigtails, and her eyes were light green. She was gripping in her arms a huge stuffed angler fish that Kanata immediately adored.

"I-I'm sorry..." The girl muttered. "B-But can you help me? I-I've gotten lost..." She gripped the angler fish close to her chest, squeezing it.

"Of course I can help." Kanata smiled. "Where's your parents?"

"W-Well, um," The girl blushed and she buried her face in the plushie. "Y-You do look kinda like mama..."

Kanata's brain froze for a second. "I-I do, huh?" He smiled uneasily. "Um, maybe I can ask on the intercom? What's your name, so I can ask...?"

"...Oh, um..." The girl fumbled. "N-Nito. Nito Ankou..."

As in Nito NAZUNA?! Kanata realized. He didn't know he had a younger sister!

"N-No, I-I'm an only..." The girl buried her face more, and Kanata realized he had spoken aloud. "N-Nazuna's my papa's name, though..."

Kanata fidgeted from side to side, fingers tugging nervously at his sleeves and his gaze was trained on the floor. (Polished. Freshly too, it smelled good.)

He hadn't meant for Rei to notice his bruises, they were pretty bad after all, and nothing that could be explained away with having simply bumped into something during dance practice. At Rei's words though, he looked up, lime green eyes widening.

"I can... Stay? But, Rei... Will this not be a problem?"

Location: Starmony Dorm Common Room

Shinobu: *gulp, gulp*… Fwah. The tea you brew is delicious as always de gozaru, Kanzaki-dono~!

A freshly brewed cup of hot tea will warm you up from the mid-winter cold from the inside out~!

Souma: Today is of especially frigid temperature, is it not? You would do well to keep your body warm.

Do let me know if you wish to have an additional cup. I have some excellent tea leaves I procured from Kaori activities the other day.

Should you desire it, Sengoku, I could attempt to brew those tea leaves.

Shinobu: Are you sure, de gozaru? Then I would love to have another cup!

But before that, I shall first enjoy this cup through and through!

Souma: But of course. There is no need to make haste. Savor the drink thoroughly!

Kanata: Fufufu. Both of you look to be in quite the warm and cozy “mood”~.

Souma: Why goodness, if it isn’t Shinkai-dono! I presume you have just now returned?

In that case, I shall brew a pot of my green tea at once, so that you may warm yourself up with a drink.

Of course, rest assured that it shall be cooled to a suitable temperature for you, Shinkai-dono.

Kanata: Thank you very much, Souma. But, I’d like to request one thing first.

It’d be perfect if you could pour the “tea” you brew into this cup here.

Shinobu: Oh, it’s one of those! Those teacups you sometimes see at sushi restaurants and such, de gozaru![1]

Souma: Indeed. It appears to be a teacup with kanji characters that contain the radical for fish (魚).

Now then, I shall pour your tea… Here you go, enjoy.

Kanata: *gulp, gulp* ♪ Phew. The “tea” you brew is delicious as always, Souma~.

The “temperature” was just right, and my body feels nice and warm, too.

Souma: It makes me glad to hear so. Now, Shinkai-dono, why is it you happened to possess a teacup so opportunely? 

Kanata: Fufu. I happened upon it, and simply “couldn’t stop myself” from buying it~.

That, and I thought it would make for a good “reference” for “merchandise” as the “centerpiece” for “AOUMI Aquarium”~.

Shinobu: I see. You’re right, this teacup would indeed be a good way to learn fish names, de gozaru!

Souma: Hm. The impression it leaves reminds one more of a sushi restaurant rather than an aquarium, however…

Kanata: I agree~. I also did not feel too sure about using it as it is.

And so, I thought that by using it as a “reference”, I would be able to come up with some good “ideas”.

Shinobu: Is that so, de gozaru? Hopefully, you can come up with something nice, then…

Still, though, I was not aware that there were this many kanji out there for fishes.

I remember a time I saw teacups at a sushi restaurant that included kana readings de gozaru, but this one doesn’t appear to have any.[2]

Oh, this one here is maguro, “tuna” (鮪), de gozaru. Even I can read some of these, like sake, “salmon” (鮭) and tara, “cod” (鱈)!

But how do you read this kanji…? This one with the radical for “fish” (魚) next to the radical for “bay” (浦)?

Some of these fish use radicals that are easy to read on their own, like “sense” (念) and “flower” (花), but… I don’t have the slightest clue how they’re read all together.

Kanata: Fufufu. You see, some of the “kanji” you just mentioned just now, Shinobu, are among the ones for creatures of the “sea” that are not fish~.

Shinobu: They’re not fish?! But I felt so certain they all must’ve been![3]

Souma: Kanji that contain the radical for “fish” (魚) are rarely taught, as they are not commonly used. It is not surprising that you would be unable to recognize them, Sengoku.

Shinobu: Mm… You don’t look to be surprised at all, Kanzaki-dono. Could it be that you know how to read these, de gozaru?

Souma: Heheh, well, I am a member of the Marine Biology Club.

Under the tutelage of Shinkai-dono, I have acquired a fair amount of knowledge pertaining to fish. ♪ 

Kanata: Don’t worry~, Shinobu. At first, Souma didn’t understand a single thing at all, either.

I still remember the time Souma read this “kanji” as “uoura” (魚浦)-dono.[4]

Shinobu: Uoura-dono, huh? Ahaha, that’s just reading the radicals out as separate kanji readings!

Souma: I-I would not make the same mistake again! The radical for “fish” (魚) which is to the left of the radical “bay” (浦) is read as iruka, “dolphin” (鯆)!

Shinobu: Whoa… So this one is “dolphin”, huh?

You’re right, dolphins aren’t fish, they’re mammals, de gozaru.

Kanata: And to explain the others, the fish that has the kanji with the radical for “sense” (念) is the namazu, “catfish” (鯰).[5]

Souma: As for the one with the radical for “flower” (花), it is read as hokke, an “atka mackerel” (𩸽).

Shinobu: Ooh, Shinkai-dono, Kanzaki-dono, you both are so knowledgeable, de gozaru~! I’m learning a lot!

But all these kanji for fish are making me wonder if there is one that uses the shinobu (忍) radical…

Are there any, de gozaru? I’d love to learn about that one!

Kanata: Hmm, maybe I simply haven’t heard of it yet, but I do not think there is a fish “kanji” like that.

Shinobu: Is that so, de gozaru… That’s disappointing.

Souma: I see, if that is the case, why not create the kanji yourself, Sengoku?

It would merely be something for your own satisfaction, but as long as you yourself enjoy doing so, there is no harm in it.

Shinobu: Creating your very own kanji, huh… Ooh, that does sound really cool! ♪ 

Kanata: …Souma, about your “idea” you came up with. I think you might be onto something.

By creating their own "original kanji" for the fish they like, and making it into “merchandise”…

It could be made into “memorabilia” just for those who visit “AOUMI Aquarium”! ♪ 

Shinobu: Ohh, that does sound like it could have potential, Shinkai-dono!

Souma: Hm, it does sound like it would be fun to have one’s “orijinaru” kanji written onto clothes, handcloths, and the like.

Shinobu: How should the kanji written with the radicals shinobu (忍) and sakana (魚) be read… Perhaps as “ningyo”, de gozaru?

Souma: I think that is quite nice. However, if it’s read as ningyo, then wouldn’t the radical for “blade” (刃) be more suitable beside the “fish” (魚) radical?

Shinobu: No, no, that isn’t what comes to mind naturally at all, Kanzaki-dono![6]

Kanata: “AOUMI Aquarium” doesn’t have mermaids (ningyo) to begin with~.

However, I do think this will make for good “opportunities” for everyone to get together and “talk about” fish.

I also love to “talk about” fishes with everyone, so I’m sure this “idea” will be absolutely wonderful. ♪

The teacup Kanata has here is a sushi yunomi; a type of teacup characterized by having no handle decorated with various kanji for fish on the sides, a teacup often served at sushi restaurants. You can see it in his unbloomed art from his card ("Strange" Fish) Kanata Shinkai here.

A large number of animal and plant kanji are considered obscure or difficult to learn and write, and are more commonly spelt in katakana; such as ネズミ (nezumi) for mouse, instead of the kanji 鼠. These sushi yunomi teacups will typically have kana readings to indicate how they are pronounced.

If you’re as surprised as Shinobu is, back when these words were created, a lot of sea mammals would be grouped in with fish, as opposed to the mammal/fish grouping that we’re familiar with today, and so they were named as such. For example, the kanji for crocodiles, 鰐 (wani), essentially means “sea dragon”!

Souma tries his very best reading the kanji 鯆 by reading it as 魚 and 浦, separately—not even as a compound kanji. It’s very clunky and funny-sounding. 

The 念 radical in “catfish” (鯰) here is actually derived from an old Chinese reading of the radical that means “to be sticky”.

Reading the radical for “blade” (刃) as nin is very rare.

Hi! I don't know if the requests will be open but can I request something with the descendants of Kanao, Tanjiro and Nezuko if you can? How about a Lee Kanata and Ler Sumihiko, Toko?

(I know that not much is known about them but it seems to me that it would be a nice scenario)

She had already gotten tired of Yoshiteru talking about the story that he reread about 5 times a day, and as if that were not enough, her friends had agreed to dress similar to those in the story. 'Come on, it's not that bad! Look how the haori looks on me! This is fun! Be glad, it's not that bad!'

'What do you mean "it's not that bad"? DON'T YOU SEE THAT THE ONLY THING WE DO IS-!?'

'Touko, it could be worse...', Touko stopped, looking with Sumihiko at the room where Kanata came from.

She couldn't help it but snorted, she didn't think he would be willing to wear a skirt just like Kanao, his ancestor.

'Isn't it funny... This skirt is strange, how can you guys wear things like this...?' 'Well Kanata, you look gorgeous! Let's see, model for us! Cheer up!'

Kanata was not happy, he did not plan to do that, especially if he was wearing a short skirt

'Oh Kanata hahaha... The reason it looks like this is because you didn't know how to put your belt on correctly! Come, let me help you!'

'I'm sure I did it right... But go ahead I guess...', Kanata sighed, maybe Touko was right, he wasn't used to those clothes like she was.

Touko started to help him, trying not to laugh at the way he had put on his skirt, he definitely needed help.

Sumihiko also helped, because every time Touko pulled on the skirt to fix it, Kanata would shudder and close his legs.

'Oh please! I know you're ticklish, but don't exaggerate, I'm not even touching you!', Touko exclaimed angrily, growling when Kanata raised one of his legs and seemed to have destroyed the skirt. 'Maybe it wasn't his size... Don't you think?'

'Of course it is! It's just that if he wasn't so ticklish he wouldn't be suffering so much!'

Kanata covered Touko's mouth, it was already the second time she was saying that word and he felt that if he said it again, his blush would probably give him away.

'Very well that's enough, now I share Touko's idea... This is ridiculous... I don't want to play this anymore'

'Come on Kanata! We're already dressed up, you can't abandon us like this! Touko, take care of the skirt... I'll make it stay still!'

And yep, although Touko claimed to "hate" Yoshiteru's idea, the truth is that she took advantage of this to make a bet with Sumihiko.

It was a very well thought out plan, wasn't it? Well, at least it was for Touko. 'Wait... Was it your idea...?! TOUKOOOOOO!!'

'Yes, it was... So if you don't mind, I'd like to win the bet money. So... Come here Kana~!'

Kanata tried to run out the door and would have made it if it hadn't been for Yoshiteru closing the door, apologizing beforehand with "it's you or me!". 'DAMN YOSHITERU!!'

'Hey, no one can insult my idiot brother! Only me!', eeeeem... Well, each sister knows and decides how to treat her brother.

Touko suggested Sumihiko tickle Kanata's legs so they would get the best reactions. 'I just hope he doesn't kick us...'

'I WILL IF YOU DON'T STOHOHOHOP!! AHAHAHAHAHA!!' 'Did I tell you or not?! He can't stand someone tickling his legs, anywhere else he can stand it, but not his legs, right love~?'

Kanata denied, he was not willing to accept the truth, but in the condition he was in it did not help him much.

Sumihiko had to accept that he had never dared to tickle Kanata, but now that he knew this, he would tickle him every time Kanata wouldn't let him sleep. 'Are you going to accept it once and for all? Come on, I'll give you part of the money if you help me~'

'NEHEVEHEHER!!' 'Ooooh well, I guess I have no choice... Sumihiko presses his hips! Let's do it at the same time on a count of 3, okay?'

Now Kanata understood why Yoshiteru was usually scared of his own sister, she could be terrifying when she proposed to it

'Woah! That was fast! Well, I guess you won Touko...', Sumihiko stopped and stopped Touko.

Trouble's Brewing Remake: What's it about, and why is it happening?

//So, I think I kept everyone waiting for quite a while after I announced this, and I think it's finally time that I explain what's going to happen with this arc, and what it's all about.

//After some deep reflection and feedback, I realized there were areas that could be improved, and I’m really excited about the direction this rewrite is taking. I know some of you might have questions, so I wanted to address a few that might be on your mind. From what inspired the change, to how this will affect the story moving forward, and what new things you can expect, I’ll cover it all right here.

//No need for a long, drawn out explanation, so let's get started.

1 - Why is Trouble's Brewing being re-written?

//The simple answer is because it's easily the most outdated arc of the story.

//For those who haven't seen the beginning of this blog, this was before I came up with the structure that I currently have, and suffice to say, the plot of the first arc was rushed, and didn't really explain ANYTHING. It was just a quickly fumbled together introduction with no real characterization.

//Basically, all it was designed to do was drop Shuichi and his friends into the world, and it didn't have much of a story besides that.

//The reason why I'm rewriting Trouble's Brewing, and making it from scratch, is to take that plot, and actually make a full-length story arc for it, instead of a few quick posts that were hastily scrapped together, and uncomfortably bad compared to my current writing.

//Now, normally, I really hate the idea of going back and recreating work that I've already made, but in this case, I have more than one good reason for doing so. Considering he's still a key player in the story, it's also the first chance I have to actually use Kuripa's new sprites as part of the story, as well as to give a little more early characterization to some characters who severely needed it in preparation for future arcs.

2 - Will the new arc change the overall direction of the story?

//Yes, but not massively.

//The general plot of the arc will be the same. It will generally be set up to explain the world, the current state of the Future Foundation, as well as introduce the V3 kids into the fray, and the OC's like Kuripa.

//All this is is me taking that original story, and expanding it into something full fledged, like all the current arcs do.

3 - Are key characters being changed or removed?

//I'm sure a lot of people are wondering this, and the answer is yes.

//However there are also characters that will be coming back for the arc, namely Hajime, Yukari, and regular Himiko.

4 - How will the asks function? Will there be any for this arc?

//To make it easier on myself, no. But I will not be closing the box during the duration.

//Asks will be asked in the context of where the story is currently. Because it's a rewrite, I want Trouble's Brewing to be entirely story.

//After all, there's not much point in asking questions when most people already know the current plot developments. There isn't much potential for questions when the reset button gets hit.

5 - How different will the rewritten arc be from the original?

//As I said before, the basic plot is the same, but it's been expanded to include more character moments, story beats, and just...plot in general. Below, I've included some of the important considerations for those looking forward to it:

The main characters of the arc are the Branch 14 trio, i.e. Makoto, Mukuro, and Kuripa.

As teased in the title though, all the main protagonists (with the exception of Kaede, who is not present at this point in the story) will play significant roles in the plot, Shuichi especially.

Yukari Koime will be the main antagonist of the arc. The reason is because I feel that her introduction in Neo World was a bit too bare bones for how important she is throughout Phases 1 and 2, and I wanted more of a chance to have her be the main antagonist.

The big key difference of this arc, compared to the original, is that Maki and Himiko don't just show up as easily as Shuichi does. Like in the original Trouble's Brewing, Shuichi will appear through a wormhole and arrive on Jabberwock Island, but unlike their rushed arrival in the original arc, the main plot of this new arc will involve the Future Foundation tracking down and rescuing Maki and Himiko, to help reunite them with Shuichi. Effectively, it;'s something of a Saving Private Ryan kind of story.

6 - Will we see new scenes or characters?

//Yes, and yes.

//Although, for whatever new characters we DO add to this, don't expect them to stick around for the rest of the story. We need to kind of retain the canonicity, and it doesn't make sense for new characters to appear, and then not be present for the rest of the story.

//The new scenes are designed to better establish the current state of the world 8 years after DR3, and to establish the new characters, like Kuripa and Mukuro, although they don't have their current development, of course.

7 - Can we still access the original version?

//Yes, of course, it should hopefully still be up. But the whole premise of this is to improve the first part of the story, so hopefully, you won't need, nor want to after this.

8 - Will the themes or tone of the story change?

//I can't say for certain, but if they do, it'll likely be to better elaborate and improve upon the general themes of Survivor as a whole, so that new readers can get better acquainted with the premise.
