This has been a problem since the new voting system was established, it started by giving us Jamala's win in 2016 when the public voted for Russia's Sergey Lazarev (singing "thunder and lightning it's getting exciting" whilst walking/climbing up a wall) which had a 231 point discrepancy between the public and jury votes. The juries voted for Dami Im, who was phenomenal.
The worst it's been was 2019, which I think got swept under the rug a bit because everyone liked Keiino, but I don't think anyone actually expected them to win - also everyone was a bit preoccupied talking about the politics of Israel hosting the competition. They won the televote with 291 points, the jury gave them 40 (251 point difference). The juries favourite to win that year was Tamara Todevska (blonde woman, green and black dress, power ballad) with a song called Proud, the juries gave her 247 points and the public only 58, which of course is how we ended up with Duncan Lawrence winning.
I can't believe I'm about to say something mildly positive about this year's result but at least the juries and televote were within 100 points of each other. The only other time that's happened since the new voting system was brought in was Portugal's win in 2017 where there was only a 6 point difference between the jury and public vote.
If we discount Portugal as an outlier, the average discrepancy between the televote winner and the points that they recieve from the juries is about 195 points! (it's usually over 200)
None of this is to say that none of those who have won under this system have deserved it - they're all incredibly talented artists, but if the system is has a pattern of disregarding public opinion something has to change

Jukebox January: Day 2
the original post tag of all my posts
Today is songs starting with B, and this happens to include a few of my all time favorites! It's always hard to say if any one song is my favorite, because many songs mean a lot to me for many reasons, but some of them stick with me forever.
Bliss - Muse
This song is the musical manifestation of the aching feeling of seeing someone else being happy and wishing and wanting so, so much to have a little bit of the peace and joy in their mind. This is why it's one of my favorites. I always think it's so powerful because it's not wishing ill on whoever is so happy--he's singing "everything about you is so easy to love", it's just that wish to understand it, to search for that light and warmth. This song has such lovely contrasts music-wise too, the synth arpeggios with the scratches in the guitar riff, the minor key verses to major key chorus, it all adds to this feeling of both joy and painful longing at the same time.
Butterflies and Hurricanes - Muse
Yeah, today you get 2 Muse songs for the price of one. I can't help it! This one's also important because it's the inspiration for the first tattoo I ever got. The song's title is a reference to the butterfly effect ("the idea that a butterfly's wings might create tiny changes in the atmosphere that may ultimately alter the path of a tornado") and for me, it reminds me that small things can mean a lot. The tattoo itself is just a butterfly with some cool geometric patterns, but the meaning is for me!
Blinding - Florence + the Machine
I adore the whole vibe of this song, it reflects perfectly the feeling of "waking up" to the truth of something, of having your illusions about someone shattered, and the mix of both grief and freedom that comes with that. Makes me feel a lot at once in a beautiful way.
Barve oceana - Joker Out
Of all Joker Out songs, this is the one most meaningful to me personally. (To nobody's surprise, if they've ever clicked on my blog and seen the title!) When I say it's changed my life, I mean it. The line "Kdo zdej poje tiste pesmi ki je včasih pela jih?" feels like it was written specifically to remind me that I need to make music again. The whole song about someone finding herself in a faraway place, it's everything to me, it's me and my dreams and it tells me that I have to find that place for myself. Also, the bassline is so damn good...
Buen día Benito - El Cuarteto de Nos
El Cuarteto de Nos is a Uruguayan rock band which I discovered when participating in a Eurovision fan contest, actually, and I'm so glad I did because they're amazing. (Oh, and they've been around since 1984, so they have a huge back catalog!) This particular song is a favorite of mine because of the intensity of it: it's about a guy confronting his childhood bully in search of justice, and reveals more and more painful history as it goes on. It's worth looking up the lyrics to understand it if you don't speak Spanish (or if you're like me and only speak Spanish badly).
Four more below the cut so this doesn't get too long on people's dashes:
Boum Boum Boum - MIKA
Sometimes you just need a fun French song about banging your lover everywhere and shocking the bourgeoisie. That's all. The line, "s'aimer comme ça, c'est pas vulgaire" is always a good reminder, too.
Blood // Water - grandson
I love the genre mixing that grandson has in his music, plus the lyrics about corruption and greed are, unfortunately, always relevant. This one also was a big inspiration for an OC of mine, whose family's greed was the source of him being cursed, so I listened to it a lot when coming up with him.
Black Leather - KEiiNO and Charlotte Qamaniq
I love KEiiNO. I don't think I mention it enough on this blog because they don't really pop up in posts to reblog, so let me mention it now: I love KEiiNO. This song never fails to make me feel better about myself with the line "fashion your shame into a sight".
Bet Maijpuķītēm Jāpaliek - Tumsa
Every note of this song seems to be infused with beautiful melancholy. When I listen all I can feel is like I'm looking into memories through a haze, a pretty haze, but it's still memories, and I'm wishing to touch them again. Opens with the lines "Viņas sapņi ir par to/Tālu zemi, mīļoto", and considering what I said about Barve oceana above, there's definitely a pattern here...

someone give that yuletide fic a reflection post!
I've never really done one of these Yuletide reflection posts before, but this year I have SO MUCH TO SAY OMG that I'm making one of these to get it out of my system.
So I wrote this fic with Subwoolfer fans basically trying to bend time and space to win Eurovision. Because whomst among us has not wanted to do that for a Eurovision fave at some point? (Eurovision juries turn on your location I just want to chat about the scores you gave Keiino) Except longterm subcubs are also space wolves (probably?) so they don't quite get it right.
I will ramble about the music aspects about this fic, but I also do want to talk about the writing parts! Basically I'm actually... a relative newcomer to Eurovision. I'm an American who started tuning in in 2018, but I really got on board last year when 2021 was so freaking fun and culminated in one of my actual faves that year winning! This somehow translated in me keeping up with the 2022 contest from early on... I think I started following along when Lithuania's song was announced and never quite let up. There's a lot of downtime in between Eurovision events, though, so I also became obsessed with Eurovision data vids. The ones like "biggest flop between semifinals and the final" or "songs with biggest differences between jury and public vote" (again, justice for Keiino.) This had me backtracking into Eurovision history a LOT over the spring and retroactively falling in love with a lot of different songs/moments.
Then, of course, 2022 Eurovision itself also had a lot of meme worth moments. Like the broken kinetic sun fiasco absolutely killed me. But there's a whole Eurovision 2022 iceberg meme that nailed the chaotic vibes of that contest in general.
So basically the writing of the fic was an attempt at a loving/joking synthesis of my times in music related fandoms in general, but also everything I'd absorbed in Eurovision fandom in particular. (And yes the author note about needing a VPN was a joke about how I have to use one to watch any of the performances on youtube.)
As for the music aspects of the fic... So, I've wanted to get into music editing/remixing/production etc for years now but kept getting cold feet about it. Eurovision this year was actually the thing that pushed me to finally go ahead and just do it. And I'm so glad it did! It also meant it felt appropriate to actually work on some music for this assignment.
I mostly only have things to say about the two full remixes.
First the bardcore cover. So, this one most involved just finding piano sheet music and then painstakingly programming the notes into midi files on my DAW. I quickly found out that just recreating those exact notes wasn't going to cut it, though. First the chorus... In the vocals, it's pretty much just a repetition of the same note over and over. That's fine in the original song because the point of the chorus is the intense beat drop. You don't really have that going for you in bardcore, though, so I spent a lot of time yeeting the vocal notes around... across octaves, across different stringed instruments, etc. I also put in a lot of movement in the instruments functioning as the bassline to create more interest.
Although, regarding the beat drop... I also spent an embarassing amount of time trying to reverse engineer what was going on with the drum beats in the song and reflect hem in the drums I had in this. There definitely came a point one night where I was giggling to myself over looping the second chorus over and over and over to try and figure out whether the drumming was different from the first chorus and if so how? and how do I reflect that?
And of course the final chorus does stuff with instruments that's really... not bardcore at all. The string instruments there sound more like orchestras from centuries and centuries later.
But, hey, these remixes were made by space wolves. They can't get everything right!
The lofi beats mix was almost the opposite experience. Instead of meticulously recreating the song, here I was basically... scrapping it (and several others) for parts and seeing how many times I could use the same small melody in different ways. This was because all of Subwoolfer's songs get incredibly bombastic early on and never let up. I'm not yet skilled enough at getting stems to, say, pull out of just a synth from one of the loud parts and slow it down. Limitations can be fun, though, and I definitely had a great time exploring these snippets of the songs from different angles.
It did make me a bit sad I really couldn't find a way to incorporate Grace Kelly or especially Turin. I say especially Turin because of the line "we're here to win that Eurovision/but with a broken kinetic sun it might tough." But then I was able to use audioclips from those in the mix, so that was something, haha!
Probably the most bonkers thing I did was isolate audio of Subwoolfer dropping those plastic balls with questions in them, and then using them as audio texturing for the lofi remix haha.
Okay, that's probably enough rambling from me! So, yes, tl;dr I got a fantastic assignment this year and had a lot of fun working on it.

i legit tear up just hearing the crowd going fucking apeshit during keiino’s grand final performance the ENERGY in that room is umparralelled and every single person in that building is just so clearly having the time of their life with that song and the STAGING and just..... i can so clearly remember watching that live and being like “oh so THIS is what its like when the performers are genuinely enjoying themselves up there” bcus all three of them are just smiling the whole way through and oh my GOD i know it isnt fair to hold every entry to that standard they were SO fucking good (still bitter that the juries cost them that win even though im happy for duncan) but everything this year just feels like such a let down. its all falling flat bcus theres no LIFE behind any of it.

I’m honestly still not over “Spirit in the Sky” not winning.
I wanna riot whenever I think of it.
Why don’t we make it blow on TikTok or something?
I want justice for it dammit! And in the meantime, I’m glad that Norway has gone cray cray town!
Norway 2019: We sent this beautiful pop-folk song mixing in and celebrating indigenous culture and song.
Norway 2019: *places 1 in the public vote but gets screwed over by the jury and doesn’t win*
Norway:…….
Norway: FU*K THIS

my eurovision 2021 ranking (before rehearsals)
hey!! 🤍 i’ll try to keep this short & sweet (and bear in mind some of these are subject to change & depend on my mood) but this is my rough ranking of this year’s entries based solely on the studio cuts <3
dislike:
39. 🇩🇪 jendrik - i don’t feel hate: i knew this would be my last place since i first heard it. he seems like a nice guy but this type of music is just. not for me? in fact i don’t think i’ve ever even managed to make it all the way through since my first listen :/
38. 🇱🇻 samanta tina - the moon is rising: i love love LOVE samanta & think she is an absolute gem but this song & me simply do not go together. that being said i appreciate both her voice & the message
37. 🇵🇱 rafał - the ride: while this is slightly catchy & seems to be an ear worm for me, i cannot take this song seriously. rafał looks ridiculous in those sunglasses in the music video. the lyrics are awful too
neither like nor dislike:
36. 🇦🇱 anxhela peristeri - karma: this is very strange because usually i am the no. 1 fan of ethnic influenced ballads at eurovision, but i just do not get this one. i can definitely see the appeal but it’s not for me
35. 🇲🇰 vasil - here i stand: i think his voice is great however the song doesn’t do much for me. i find it quite forgettable & think he was definitely capable of giving us something better which is a shame
34. 🇫🇮 blind channel - dark side: i enjoyed this quite a bit when it first came out but it’s quickly slid down my ratings. the lyrics are too edgy for me & it’s a throwback to a genre of music that i don’t really enjoy anyway. but i can appreciate that it sticks out & does something different
33. 🇨🇿 benny cristo - omaga: i was a massive fan of kemama last year & while i liked this upon first listen, i have to say its far too generic to really stick out after a while. plus some of the lyrics are a bit creepy lol. having said that i think seeing him perform it live could definitely change my opinion
32. 🇸🇪 tusse - voices: another year, another generic well produced pop song from sweden. should we be surprised anymore? it’s okay, i don’t hate it, but i’m struggling to find anything i like about it. plus the lyrics are the most “eurovision cliche lyrics” i’ve ever heard
31. 🇬🇧 james newman - embers: okay while this is ranked relatively low, i have to say this is better than anything we’ve sent since 2017. it’s a nice song, i enjoy it when it’s on, but i don’t have an urge to play it, if that makes sense?
30. 🇲🇹 destiny - je me casse: i know this is probably blasphemy but i just do not understand the hype around this song. destiny has a great voice but i don’t see how this song sticks out in anyway that it’s the favourite to win? it’s another one that i won’t skip but i won’t seek out to listen to
29. 🇦🇹 vincent bueno - amen: i do enjoy this, but i wish it just had a bit more oomph. the lyrics for the verses are good but the chorus is just lacking something. i do think this could be a dark horse to qualify though
28. 🇸🇮 ana soklič - amen: i just realised the two amens are right next to each other on my ranking lol. anyway, this is only so high because of her amazing voice. the song doesn’t really do anything for me, but you have to appreciate that level of talent
27. 🇺🇦 go_a - shum: this is one i know i’ll appreciate more live, but i just can’t get into the studio version. plus i really liked solovey last year so this one seems worse in comparison
26. 🇲🇩 natalia gordienko - sugar: this is good but i think all “dream team” songs are a little bit dated nowadays. however saying that i love the music video & moldova always improve live
25. 🇵🇹 the black mamba - love is on my side: this has been a big grower. it’s not a favourite, but i think it definitely has its niche, and i can appreciate that
24. 🇳🇱 jeangu macrooy - birth of a new age: grow was in my top 5 last year, so it was always gonna be hard for jeangu to deliver something as good. this has grown on me, but i’m still not 100% on board
like:
23. 🇳🇴 tix - fallen angel: i didn’t like this at first because i was so heartbroken that keiino didn’t win the national selection, but i’ve gotten over it now lol. it’s cheesy but in a good way, i think this act doesn’t take itself too seriously either which makes it more enjoyable
22. 🇸🇲 senhit ft flo rida - adrenalina: it’s fun, catchy, even has a surprise verse from flo rida! probably san marino’s 3rd best entry ever (justice for complice & crisalide 💔)
21. 🇨🇾 elena tsagrinou - el diablo: it’s just a very good pop song. i’m not in love with it but it’s of a very good quality (well. apart from the lyrics). i’m sure the staging will improve it even more
20. 🇬🇷 stefania - super girl: greece is one of my biggest growers from last year, i think this is a MUCH better song than supergirl was. i’m really rooting for stefania
19. 🇪🇪 uku suviste - the lucky one: this has been such a big grower, it’s insane. i can recognise it’s not the best song but i just really like it for some reason.
18. 🇪🇸 blas cantó - voy a quedarme: i’m a sucker for native language ballads, and this is a pretty standard one, but it’s good to me. blas seems like a real sweetheart too, which helps :)
17. 🇨🇭 gjon’s tears - tout l’univers: this is another one of those songs that i really should love, and while i like it, i can’t really connect with it. gjon’s entry last year was my second favourite, and unfortunately this doesn’t scratch the same itch that did, it’s still a very good song & i completely understand why it’s one of the favourites to win
16. 🇧🇪 hooverphonic - the wrong place: i really don’t like hooverphonic as a band (actually it’s mostly alex callier that i dislike) but this is just a good song. i am still upset that luka didn’t get to go to eurovision though :/
15. 🇮🇪 lesley roy - maps: another massive grower! i much prefer this to her song last year. i really hope ireland can get their shit together & give this song the staging it deserves
14. 🇦🇿 efendi - mata hari: this is basically a carbon copy of cleopatra, and i guess i liked that so i like this. however i will say it has dropped in my ranking a bit. i’m ranking this solely on the song, efendi herself is a different matter & i’m not really educated enough on what’s happening in azerbaijan/armenia to comment but from what i’ve seen it’s not the best, let’s say
13. 🇱🇹 the roop - discoteque: i prefer on fire from last year, but this is definitely not a bad effort. i can’t see it as a contender for the win though. another one i will probably enjoy much more live
12. 🇷🇴 roxen - amnesia: i really like the message of this song. i just wish she would work on her english pronunciation, but that’s a minor complaint. but i really like roxen as an artist
love:
11. 🇷🇸 hurricane - loco loco: i love girl groups, and this is no exception. vocally they’re really good, i love that it’s in serbian, & i also just really love sanja vučić lol
10. 🇭🇷 albina - tick tock: i wish this was fully in croatian, but i think it’s a great song regardless. i loved her performance at dora so hopefully they’ll do something similar/even better at esc
9. 🇧🇬 victoria - growing up is getting old: i preferred tears getting sober from last year but this is still really good. the lyrics are some of my favourite of this year, they really resonate with me. victoria is a really interesting artist & i’m really glad she got introduced to me through esc
8. 🇮🇱 eden alene - set me free: the revamp has made this move like 20 places up in my ranking lol. she is so talented & i just hope they have a good staging concept!
7. 🇮🇸 daði og gagnamagnið - 10 years: think about things was good but i think this is even better! i love the retro influences & the lyrics are so sweet
6. 🇬🇪 tornike kipiani - you: i might be one of the only people who adores this song. the lyrics paint such a clear picture of a simple, strong love. and i think it’s quiet but powerful at the right moments. i know i will be heartbroken when this doesn’t qualify :(
5. 🇫🇷 barbara pravi - voilà: i played this too much & ruined it for myself, but i love it again now. very authentically french but without overdoing it (cough 2017 staging cough), just a beautiful song
4. 🇮🇹 måneskin - zitti e buoni: i’m not a massive rock fan, but a song like this i just vibe with. it’s just so good. italy is always either my no. 1 or in my top 5 since they returned (apart from 2012 & 2014) and they’ve done it again. this is definitely a contender to win
3. 🇦🇺 montaigne - technicolour: this song is eclectic but i love it. i didn’t like don’t break me, but this is so much better, and so much more authentic to montaigne as an artist. i know it’s divisive, but i’m on the side that loves it
2. 🇩🇰 fyr og flamme - øve os på hinanden: this is just so fun. i love the 80s vibe, the performance at the national selection was simple but still very engaging. this is one i will play for many years after the contest
1. 🇷🇺 manizha - russian woman: where do i even start. native language, ethnic influenced sound, important message, charismatic performer. this song is amazing. and i’m so glad i’ve found manizha to listen to!
so that’s it!! if anyone wants to chat about their thoughts please message me!! 🤍

ESC2019 Preshow#10
10. ALBANIA Jonida Maliqi - “Ktheju tokës” SemiFinal 2, #14
youtube
Spiritual successor to “Mercy” <3 Unlike the many songs that grew on me, it well and truly was love at the first sight of “Ktheju tokës” and I never looked back.
ENTRY ANALYSIS
It’s surprising the “this year’s Eurovision is the WORST EVER because I love being dramatic for the sake of it” narrative even took off this year because THIS MARVELLOUS MIRAGE was the first entry revealed and it fucking SLAPS. #TellAviv2019 COULD NEVER HAVE BEEN BAD AS LONG AS JONIDA MALIQI REMAINS A CONFIRMED PARTICIPANT AND THAT IS #MyTruth~
I think it’s pretty obvious, why Jonida is iconic and amazing yes? Then I won’t insult your intelligence by delving into the nitty-gritty, but juuuuust in case you aren’t feeling Jonida, for *some* fucking reason: It’s a beautiful, anti-emigration humanitarian hymn completely in line with last year’s “Mercy”, except the medium of choice is an ambient, percussive folk ballad 😍. It’s hilar to me that the Serbs and Albanians hate each other so much, because it’s almost as if they swapped entries (”Kruna” really does have “mediocre FiK winner and underwhelming ESC flop NQ” written all over it, don’t lie to yourself!)
What else is there of note? Ah yes, the REVAMP. The song itself wasn’t so much revamped (they dropped the strings, which is good imo because they distracted from the beat) as Jonida herself was. Observe the BEFORE and the AFTER of Jonida Maliqi:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What a GLOW-up 😍 Thank fuck they did this too, btw. In order to charm all the aged rockers that make up the FiK Jury, Jonida needed to look like a shrieking harpy, but they’re turned her into an unstoppable force of glamour for Eurovision. Gays had better be flocking to her altar to pay tribute in the form of 12 points!!!
However, the further we delve into this ranking, the HARDER it becomes to cut my babies ;__; (sorry, channelling my inner Mommy [Tamta]). With most of the remaining entries I’ve had a certain moment where the song I just ~clicked~ with the song and it won me over. I haven’t really felt that with Jonida, whom I’ve always just straight-up loved. Because of this I’m less attached to her as I am to the nine other acts still in the ranking. She’s great, obviously, but she’s just there for me, being regal and excellent, as always~
NF Corner
This was the first year I bothered checking out the finale of FiK and while it went on for waaaay too long (the voting took more time than playing all the songs did, wtf), I wasn’t disappointed. There were several songs in there I liked and even two I... loved?
youtube
Soni Malaj provided the first of what would become many acts featuring a solo woman with a sultry midtempo dancepop anthem and I think she’s better than several of the acts other countries have chosen! (Remember, Eleni Fourera, or should we say, Entela Fureraj, is Albanian, after all). However since this is FiK and looking like a spinster is pretty much mandatory for women, she lost but, oh well.  And of course, ORGESA ZAIMI  was in this edition as well and as you can expect from a past BorisBubbles fave, she was once again stellar. Serving some serious Judy Funny realness with this outfit btw:
youtube
Our people’s heroine fared even worse than Soni did tho lol 😬. BACK UP BACK UP GUYS, DON’T LOSE YOUR COOL, it’s Albania. They aren’t ready to accept an edgy, jazzy hiphop beatnik bop, but that’s fine, we give them time to get out of the mid-80s (exactly ONE year) before they finally let her win FiK :)
Qualification Odds: Borderline (+)
Sadly, Albania is never a safe qualifier and every year it’s a struggle for the finale, regarldess of whether they deserve it or not.  🙄 A lof of Jonida’s chances will depend on how the rehearsals and staging go for her, but I think she Qs.
Yeah, she’s between Sergey and KEiiNo, which could end her, and I recognize that, but isn’t it so that being between two strong entries can be good if you can reach the same quality standard? Being part of a strong streak leaves a good impression, just as Ieva last year. Good vocals and a strong rumoured staging concept (turning Jonida in a giant eagle <3) should be more than sufficient to let Albania sail through in 8th place. Which is all for the best!  ‘Ktheju tokës’ arguably the best song Albania have ever sent to Eurovision, and if there’s any justice in this world it should be rewarded with a high placement in the finale!
Projected placement: 6th-14th in the SemiFinal. If she qualifies, she COULD (should) be an unexpected top 10 finisher... but will probably end up between 12th and 20th place. 🙄

as much as I love KEiiNO and Norway in general, i worry that they won't make it into the finals. The staging doesn't do the song justice and that might hold them back. The joik is quite nice and might help them out as long as people don't interpret it as 'just noise'.
