An Age of Kings

A fifteen part serial adaptation of the Henriad, made for the BBC in 1960.

Featuring, among a great many others, Robert Hardy, Judi Dench, Eileen Atkins, Sean Connery and Julian Glover.

Although all episodes have originally been played and broadcast live, a telerecording has been made, and the series is now available on DVD. I am not sure, but I think it was thought to be lost for a while.

Anyway, what I am really getting at is this: I have the DVD, and really like it, but for practical reasons I was once again looking for a few clips online, which aren’t many in most obvious sites. However, I did just stumble over a link to the first episode on ok.ru, and found there are all of them available, and... well, I think it would be nicer to share. So, here it is:

Reverse Unpopular Opinion: thoughts on The Hollow Crown?

I actually quite like The Hollow Crown. There are many things I don’t like which is against the spirit of this meme, so I’ll ignore them for now.

First: that cast. I don’t have issues with the cast at all - I have issues with the adaptation/characterisation choices but the cast are all excellent and are working with the director’s vision. They get a fair amount of stick in fandom but I like Ben Whishaw and Tom Hiddleston’s performances - they’re not my Richard II and Prince Hal but then they’re good! The adapter's choices are the problem!  And we got a lot of high calibre, in-demand actors performing roles they would never perform on-stage because the role is just too small. Like: we theoretically might have gotten a stage production with Whishaw’s Richard II or Hiddleston’s Henry V, but we probably wouldn’t ever get Jeremy Irons’s Henry IV, Patrick Stewart’s John of Gaunt, Judi Dench’s Duchess of York, John Hurt’s Chorus, Sally Hawkins’ Eleanor Cobham... I could see Sophie Okonedo playing Margaret in one of those adaptations that cuts the first tet down to one play centred on Margaret of Anjou but I’m not sure it would ever be put on a scale that an actor of Okonedo’s calibre would do it.

And, especially for Henry IV onwards, the cast gets to continue in the roles across all the plays. Anton Lesser’s Exeter, Hiddleston’s Hal, Sophie Okonedo’s Margaret, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Richard III. I love that sense of continuity! 

Also, being a filmed production means there’s more of a sense of scale. Getting to see Richard II wading through the sea is just really cool. As a whump lover, I love getting to see Hal covered in blood and mud and limping at Shrewsbury. It’s awesome getting to see a shot of English soldiers trudging through mud. The final shot zooming out from the dead bodies of Bosworth up is really cool too. I might wish they played more with aesthetics and the option of ghosts (I saw a production that had Richard II tell Henry IV that he was in the Jerusalem Chamber and also stand behind Henry V in his “God of Battles” speech and now I want this in every production).

Finally, it was what got me into medieval history and Shakespeare. It is an easily physically accessible way to enter the Histories, even if they’re not always the best version of the plays - like, I found it hard to find the RSC and Globe productions legally in Australia but I had no problem finding The Hollow Crown.

This costume, created over forty years ago has been spotted at least ten times over the years and has almost certainly been used even more. It appears with different accessories each time. Because this gown has been used so many times, it is interesting to note how the color changes based off of the lighting in each production.  Sometimes the pattern on the gown is clearly visible, while in other productions it almost completely disappears.

The costume was first seen in the 1972 adaptation of Cranford, where it was worn by Freda Dowie as Miss Brown. In 1973 it was spotted on Vickery Turner as Charlotte Brontë in The Brontës of Haworth. In 1977 it was seen on Kate Nicholls as Kate Nickleby in Nicholas Nickleby, and the next year in 1978 on Judy Cornwell as Bessy Tulliver in The Mill on the Floss. In 1983 it was worn in Jane Eyre, where it appeared on Zelah Clark in the title role. In 1986 the dress appeared again on Sandra Payne as Mrs. Micawber in a production of David Copperfield. The dress was not seen again for eight years until it was spotted on Rachel Power as Mary Garth in the 1994 Middlemarch, and then again in 1999 in Olivier Twist, where it was worn by Annette Crosbie as Mrs. Bedwin. In 2001 the gown could be seen on an extra in Nicholas Nickleby, and finally, in 2008 it was seen on Freema Agyeman as Tattycoram in Little Dorrit.

Thursday, Lt. Governor Karyn Polito delivered her second inaugural address from the House Chamber of the Massachusetts State House. 

“Mr. Speaker, Madam President. Representatives and Senators. Constitutional Officers and members of the Governor’s Council. Mr. Chief Justice and members of our Judiciary. Sheriffs. District Attorneys. Mayors. Local Officials. Clergy and distinguished guests. Cabinet Secretaries and leaders in our administration.

Thank you for gathering with us on this very important day. 

And thank you for your continued hard work and partnership representing the people of this great Commonwealth.

Jan Cellucci and the Cellucci family, thank you for being here and for all you’ve done for Massachusetts.

And our friend, Charlie Baker, my partner in governing, your leadership and compassion are an example to all of us and an inspiration to me.

And on behalf of the children in the care of the Department of Children and Families, I sincerely thank Lauren Baker for caring about them so much.

Four years ago, when I first stood here to take the oath of office, I spoke of my great grandfather, Francesco Polito, and as I stand here today with all of you I’m reminded of him again.

He immigrated to this country from Sicily, moving to Worcester County to build a better life for his family.

At that time, he started a business making concrete blocks. 

And just as those concrete blocks became the foundations of homes, businesses and buildings here in Massachusetts, his good career and growing business became the foundation for our family.

And when I think about the work that we’ve all shared over the last four years, I think about the strong foundation of partnership and progress that we’ve all built together.

In Governor Baker’s first executive order, our community compact program was created.

It’s been my great honor to lead that initiative because, like Governor Baker, I started my public service in local government.

It was there and later in representing Westborough and my hometown of Shrewsbury, that I learned that those we serve judge our success not by what’s happening on Beacon Hill, but by what's happening in their communities and neighborhoods.

With that in mind, I want to recognize and honor the contributions of our local elected officials and municipal workforce. Because their efforts make our state stronger every single day.

And since we issued that executive order I’ve had the pleasure to visit and partner with leadership in all 351 of our cities and towns.

And on an exciting note, one of those cities is now the home of the Worcester Red Sox!

You know, I keep a flag from Mount Washington in my office, a Berkshire County community of 150 strong, as a reminder that our work here extends to every border of Massachusetts touching a truly diverse expanse of people and places.

And through our partnership with you, our legislative colleagues, we have a long list of accomplishments to be proud of.

We’ve led the nation on our efforts to tackle an opioid crisis that has terrorized families across this Commonwealth and our nation.

We’ve supported our teachers and students by funding education at record levels and given direct support to make our schools safer.

We’ve provided our public safety professionals and first responders with dedicated funding for equipment and training.

We’ve brought innovative approaches to combating domestic violence, establishing a tool kit that empowers local law enforcement and victims to identify abuse and hold offenders accountable.

We’ve formed a Black Advisory Commission and Latino Advisory Commission that have issued a robust set of recommendations that we’ll fund in our upcoming budget.

We’ve led the nation on procuring renewable energy, reducing our carbon footprint and helping our communities become more resilient.

And so much more.

And just like my great grandfather's concrete block business that became the foundation for the future of his family, our work over these last four years serves as a strong foundation for this Commonwealth to build on in the years ahead.

And that’s why we’re here together today.

Throughout this nation’s history, Massachusetts has been a leader. Together, we’ve continued that proud tradition of leadership.

And at this unique and sometimes troubling time in our American history, we’ve found a pathway to progress.

We’ve chosen partnership over partisanship and worked to find common ground.

We’ve focused on doing the work we were elected to do rather than getting bogged down in political gamesmanship.

And we’ve never forgotten that what we do here matters.

We’re blessed to be the home to so many hard working, creative and passionate people. Seeking nothing more than the opportunity to build a better life for their families.

And now is the time that we press forward.

Collaborating, finding common ground, remembering the solemn responsibility that we have to our Commonwealth and its people.

And recognizing the gravity of the opportunity and trust we’ve been given.

Because this is the Massachusetts Way.

And because of our collective work over the last four years, we’re in a uniquely strong position to build on these successes.

We must continue to strengthen our public education, realizing that our work isn’t done until every student in every community has access to great schools.

We’ll create further opportunities in STEM, vocational and technical schools and online learning, innovating our public education system and better connecting our students to good careers.

And, I’ve witnessed firsthand the transformational impact these programs can have for women and underserved communities.

We must work to create more housing choices in all communities, pushing forward with our Opportunities-for-All economic development agenda.

Creating more housing is important not only for our economic competitiveness, but so that the next generation of talent and our children can afford to stay here in Massachusetts.

We must continue to modernize our aging transportation infrastructure, finding innovative approaches to increase mobility and connecting more people to places efficiently.

And we must continue to make our state government and our communities more resilient. Recognizing the effects of climate change, assessing vulnerabilities and preparing our infrastructure so that future generations may continue to prosper.

On each of these initiatives, I look forward to working with Governor Baker, our Cabinet and all of you. To make real progress, to keep Massachusetts moving forward.

And while the challenges ahead of us are real and our goals ambitious, we recognize why and how we will meet them.

We have accepted this solemn responsibility because the amazing people that call Massachusetts home have turned to us.

We will resist the temptations to react to the headlines coming from Washington D.C. and won't regress to partisan bickering.

And we will achieve these goals because we must, by building on the foundation of partnership and progress that we’ve established over these last four years.

Because this is who we are. This is the Massachusetts way.

MPs have been warned that the rollout of universal credit championed in Monday’s budget will further undermine professional writers’ falling incomes. In the acknowledgments to her winning novel, Milkman, Burns thanked her local food bank, various charities and benefits from the Department for Work and Pensions for support that enabled her to write the book.

Speaking to a cross-party inquiry into authors’ incomes on Tuesday, the Society of Authors’ chief executive Nicola Solomon said at a time when writers’ ability to earn a living from their work was under unprecedented threat, changes to how benefits were calculated left them vulnerable.

New rules demand that the self-employed prove they are in businesses “with a view to achieving a profit”, but Solomon said that the nature of professional writers’ earnings, which fluctuate from month to month, meant it was hard to prove they were commercial enterprises.

Writers’ unstable incomes also meant they might not reach the “minimum income floor” above which universal credit is paid. Solomon said: “We have a benefits system that doesn’t understand how writers work and now the minimum income floor means that authors may be cut out of the benefits system entirely.”

For those who argue that writing is a privilege rather than a profession, Solomon said: “If writing is a privilege then only the privileged will be able to afford to write, and that gives us an incredibly narrow group of people writing about the same group of people that are reading their books.”

She added: “It boils down to a question of whether you think that a working-class woman like Anna Burns should be able to write.”

Authors’ struggles to earn a living wage were heard as part of a submission to an inquiry into writers’ incomes launched by the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Writers. The submissions were heard after chancellor Philip Hammond announced a raft of other measures that were welcomed by the book industry. These included a cut to business rates that offers a lifeline to struggling independent bookshops.

Waterstones managing director James Daunt said that although his business would not gain from a cut that sees a third lopped off rates bills for high-street businesses with a turnover of £51,000 or less, the move would ensure booksellers could compete more effectively with online rivals, the biggest of whom pay little or no tax in the UK.

Describing the proportional imbalance of taxes paid by the likes of Amazon compared to small retailers as iniquitous, he said the issue should have been addressed when the economy was in better shape and not under threat from a hard Brexit. “George Osborne should have done this,” he said. “While the sun is shining you should fix the roof. Hammond has gone up there with a bit of plastic to cover the holes as a very black storm threatens.”

According to the trade magazine the Bookseller, retailers greeted the news with a mix of surprise and joy. Judy Brook, owner of Kenilworth Books in Warwickshire, told the magazine:“This has got to be a good thing in helping us compete with online sellers and compete with other retailers on the high street.” While Louise Chadwick of Button and Bear bookshop in Shrewsbury said: “We are delighted that the budget is recognising the value of the high street and giving some much-needed support to businesses.”
