Why don't you post MacGyver videos anymore ?
1 i do, i uploaded one like 3 weeks ago (youtube)
2 josh beauchamp > macgyver
3 the recent content i’ve been getting through episodes is not enough, it doesn’t fit my ideas
4 i’m too lazy to select good scenes, it’s way easier when you have short instagram videos to choose from (+ tnus episodes)
5 no one really appreciates them anymore
6 i don’t even get feedback on what was good and what was not
7 josh beauchamp > macgyver (yes, this needs to be mentioned twice because josh is the superior reason)
8 i rather spend my time on editing videos with someone i genuinely enjoy than on what others want me to post
9 people constantly steal my edits, delete my credit and put theirs on it
10 no one really noticed i didn’t post as much as i used to
- side note: i just uploaded a photo edit yesterday -

Tired of Outlander Drama
I’ll always have the books, which I love, even though DG is problematic as hell. I’ve been here for years. Sam’s casting? I had doubts (this guy? really?...But that “Come on, Sassenach” in the promo was pretty good. Really good.) and Cait? (I thought, “she’s too tall” but then I heard her answer Dougal’s question: “what’s your name lass?” “Claire. Claire Beauchamp” and she was Claire to me. When J&C had their first stand off after she ran away from the highlanders, S&C embodied J&C, for me. “I Guess then that means you’re comin’ w’ me.” Yeah, they got it right. Didn’t we all fall in love with them? I did. I freaking loved it all. Isn’t fandom freakin’ great? I’ve been on every FB group out there (ousted out of the big, nefarious one for talking back to the asshole in charge-kiss my arse, weirdo). I’ve left most of the groups because all they post is Jamie coming out of the Mill Pond. I like to see the BTS Shots. The first time I thought there was something interesting going on between S&C was the pic of them on a horse and he’s talking in her ear and she’s laughing. Hmmm. What’s this? Then the sexy photo shoots. Heart eyes and fingers entwined around awards and C wearing 2 gold rings and their hands joined impossibly together on an antler behind them in a bar? Why do they do this stuff? (I’m just imaging things, right?)
So yeah, it was fun to follow, for awhile. S&C were certainly having a lot of fun. That ping pong paddle Q&A? “You are!”” You are!. “She’s got wifi on set, she’s got wifi in the make up chair....” They were adorable, unfettered, and joyous. We have not seen that version of S&C in a long while. What happened? It just abruptly stopped. The last SDCC? Painful. People love that Josh Horowitz fake therapy session thing? I think it’s forced and weird. The last FB live! thing? Sam and his lame phallic innuendo? Nope.
Anyway, I don’t post much but I read everything. On both sides.  Here’s what I think: The anti’s, NST’s, whatever they call themselves are comprised of two levels. The first is an all out PR assault to dissuade people from thinking S&C are together and encourage (through long, lengthy, posts and CAPS, and FACTS, etc.) people to consider another story line. When someone bites, they get rewarded. “Thanks for your input, @blandfollower” or they share the screencaps that thirsty followers submit to “turn in shippers”. Bloggers get a rush from the recognition, they are part of the shake down and keep contributing. It’s an all out war for fandom truth. It’s droll, boring, tedious, and uninspiring. Shippers are the other side. These are primarily women who want to believe in hetero love. That’s not wrong. When I see C hugging S in that chemistry test video I imagine vividly what he feels like, what he smells like. Yes, the pheromone theory certainly applies here. He is a gorgeous man. She is a gorgeous woman. Wanting there to be something between them is natural for some people. If you spoon feed people (women) this romance they will buy it because if you are a cis hetero woman this feels good. You want more of it. S&C and their little videos talking about “do you believe in love at first sight?”, and “ “He’s perfect” and ”So is she” perpetuate the idea of the ultimate heterosexual love and they capitalized on that every step of the way. Think of C feigning jealousy over other “actresses!” Why did she do that? Act jealous of KDS during interviews? It’s all PR.  All of that was designed, maybe innocently in the beginning, to draw us in, and then it abruptly stopped. The IFH and all that came with it followed. I don’t have an answer for this. I can’t see T putting his high heeled foot down and saying “no more! She is my woman!” Gah, come on. No matter how many photos of “Tony’s Greatest Hits” are blogged it doesn’t create chemistry. I don’t know what this engagement is but it is weird. As weird as S being in love with a young, conservative, woman who lives thousands of miles away. All of it is PR lies, initiated by Starz and fed through the PR feed hole and propagated by various blogs. Here is what I’ve pondered on regarding people needing the support of a team mate. I had a male co-worker I loved very much. We hugged when things were tough, he was always there for me when I needed anything. He could tell if my mood changed and he wanted to help me sort things out. He was engaged to his girlfriend. He was just a good guy.
That’s what I think Sam is. Just a good, attentive, sweet, masculine (in his own way) kind of guy who offers his large shoulders to lean on for warmth or support. S&C just want to enjoy the fun that is acting. So, they played it up. They saw the hungry women for J&C and they played into it because it was good for the show and good for them and so many of us got caught up in the ride.
Think of what S&C had to deal with when OL first came out. Their first fan event was like “whoa! where did that come from?”. If I had a solid dude to hang on to during something like that I would have stayed close as possible at all times. They have obviously been each other’s champions in all of this from the start. They bonded from the very beginning. They held on to each other as best friends throughout all of this craziness but they went too far with innuendo to sell the show, DVDs, cons, etc. (“hope you find your own sassenach”)  It got out of hand and then they had to shut it down. IFH, bearding, Shatner, increased Tumblr opposition, photo ops, pap walks. I’m not going to say much about the whole Shatner thing because I think “JMIAD” had that nailed down with her Camuso post. His part in celeb PR is not exclusive to OL, he’s been trashing celebs and fandoms for years. It’s repulsive and is PR at it’s worst.
But that is how we get our Outlander information now, through PR. PR on TW, JJ, Daily Mail. Fan interaction is shut down. The most popular OL blog has been silenced. You know everyone checked Jess’s blog everyday. Jess was pushed out by aggressive PR that bullied her and her followers. That is how I see it. That is what I have observed. It was shut down to stop the S&C are together story line but it also shut down a huge portion of the fandom. Who cares anymore? These new story lines that CO and Purv are AGGRESSIVELY pushing (see the caps for emphasis? That makes it TRUE!) are boring. Uninspired. They push their story lines so hard it makes me want to take off the painful shoes I’m not wearing. Why are your trying so hard??? I suspect you’re being paid so if you can’t take a break from your PR nonsense just know that there are loads of people who see your “doth protest too much” machinations, and most people think you’re way overselling. And also, yawn. I’ve been gaslighted. I thought about all the times I was accused of “being crazy” because I felt strongly about something my husband couldn’t understand and I thought about my experience in the OL fandom. I’m a fan of many things but this is the first time I engaged online with other fans. What makes it confusing is that in the beginning it was an organic experience, and it was all new for them, That’s why it felt personal for so many people. But assholes overstepped boundaries and fans got weird. People with too much time on their hands ruined this fandom and it was all blamed on shippers because it was the easiest, most effective way to shut down relationship talk. The talk that production and the actors perpetuated for years. S&C are friends but lead people to believe it was something more and then chastised those fans for believing the bullshit they were served up. It’s abusive. Anytime you tell someone they don’t feel what they feel, that is abuse.
TL:DR S&C aren’t a romantic couple. They played it up for years because it sold the show. They aren’t into each other romantically but they love and look after one another. People read into it because people want to believe in the power of love...but love comes in many forms. It doesn’t have to be between a man and a woman and it doesn’t have to be romantic. Production exploited our emotions; S&C exploited our emotions and I’m just sitting here thinking: I’m sure they will enjoy their next holiday. In the meantime, I’ve cancelled Starz. Cheers! Ach, what shite.

New Post has been published on Superbike News
New Post has been published on http://superbike-news.co.uk/wordpress/roger-hayden-wins-motul-superbike-barber-motorsports-park/
Roger Hayden Wins Motul Superbike At Barber Motorsports Park
Roger Hayden made it through three starts to earn his third win of the 2017 MotoAmerica Superbike Championship, the Yoshimura Suzuki rider holding off the advances of Monster Energy/Yamalube/Yamaha Factory Racing’s Josh Herrin to win by .700 of a second in the Honda Championship of Alabama presented by Broaster Genuine Chicken at Barber Motorsports Park.
After earning his seventh pole position of the season earlier in the day during Superpole, Roger Hayden nailed the holeshot to lead the first part of the race, only to see a red flag on the second lap when Sylvain Barrier and Josh Hayes crashed in separate incidents.
Roger Hayden grabbed the holeshot again on the restart, but was again shown the red flag when David Anthony crashed in turn one with his Fly Racing/Motul/ADR Motorsports Kawasaki and the Airfence catching fire.
The third time was the charm, however, and Hayden was never headed in recording his third victory of the season.
“It’s a little difficult to stay focused when we have multiple restarts like we did today,” said Hayden. “After the first red flag it seemed like the tires took a drop, which they seemed to do after each restart. It was really slick and easy to make a mistake out there, especially with Josh (Herrin) pushing me. There were a few wet spots and it’s always difficult to be the guy in the lead pushing the pace when it gets like that. Everything has been working well on the bike and I feel comfortable leading the race now.”
Herrin, who is filling in on the factory Yamaha for the injured Cameron Beaubier, piled the pressure on Hayden for the duration, surviving a near crash with two laps to go to finish second.
“I can’t thank the guys on the team enough as they’ve been working above and beyond to get me comfortable on the bike,” said Herrin. “I could tell as soon as we pulled the bike out of the truck yesterday that it was going to work a lot better for me. We’ve been constantly changing things in between sessions. The race was pretty crazy today with the red flags and it made it difficult putting the tires through so many heat cycles. I was able to get a decent jump on the third start and drove around the outside of Toni (Elias) and was able to open a little bit of a gap on him. Roger (Hayden) pulled out on us with five laps to go and then I had a surge and was able to reel him back in. I had a big moment in the final laps by tucking the front and was really lucky to save that from a crash.”
Third place went to Yamalube/Westby Racing’s Mathew Scholtz, the South African earning his first Motul Superbike podium of the season while also winning his ninth Bazzaz Superstock 1000 win of the year. Scholtz wrapped up the Bazzaz Superstock 1000 Championship last weekend with a victory at New Jersey Motorsports Park.
“It definitely helps to not think about the championship and just focus on riding my own pace,” said Scholtz. “I was able to hang onto the Superbike guys for about 10 laps today, but maybe I can improve my consistency some towards the end of the race. Bobby (Fong) showed it’s possible to get on the podium with the Superbike guys earlier in the season and I’m just really happy to be up here.”
A day after destroying his Genuine Broaster Chicken Honda, Jake Gagne bounced back to finish fourth in the race. Gagne held off the constant barrage of attacks by TOBC Racing’s Danny Eslick to beat the Oklahoman by .286 of a second after his crew pulled an all nighter to get the CBR1000RR repaired.
Not far behind Eslick came Cycle World Suzuki’s Hayden Gillim with Gillim winning the Suzuki battle with fellow Kentuckian Jake Lewis on the M4 ECSTAR Suzuki. Team WD-40/Scheibe Racing’s Jason DiSalvo, Hudson Motorcycles/Helmet Sounds’ Bryce Prince and Quicksilver Latus Motors Kawasaki’s Bobby Fong rounded out the top 10.
In addition to Barrier, Hayes and Anthony, newly crowned MotoAmerica Superbike Champion Toni Elias was also a crasher, the Spaniard losing the front of his Yoshimura Suzuki on the eighth lap while running third behind Hayden and Herrin.
The top three in the championship are secure, but there is a chance that Scholtz would stake fourth in the Motul Superbike Championship from Hayes in Sunday’s race. Hayes currently leads Scholtz by 16 points.
Supersport: Gerloff Crowned Garrett Gerloff wrapped up his second successive MotoAmerica Supersport Championship on a sunny Saturday at Barber Motorsports Park, but not before a little self-proclaimed “brain fade” forced him into an off-track excursion that left him in 16th place.
Gerloff didn’t have to do much to claim the title, but he still put his head down and fought through the pack to finish third – and that was plenty to take the crown. It was the Monster Energy/Yamalube/Y.E.S./Graves Yamaha rider’s 16th podium of the season, including his 10 wins, and he’s the champion with Sunday’s race left to run.
“The nice thing about coming into this weekend was I had no pressure except to need to finish the races,” said Gerloff. “I came close to not finishing when I ran off of the track, but made the most of it. I really wanted to win the race today, not just the championship. I pushed as hard as I could once I got going because finishing off of the podium when you win the championship is not how you want to do it. I’m looking forward to the race tomorrow and after that we’ll take a little break and enjoy some time off. It was nice to walk away with what we came here for and that is to win the championship.”
JD Beach, meanwhile, took victory, his fifth of the season and it ended an eight-race winless streak for the 2015 MotoAmerica Supersport Champion. Beach dominated this one, winning by 9.8 seconds.
“It’s never easy to win a race when you’re racing against these guys,” said Beach, “I knew that Garrett (Gerloff) was going deep when he went for the pass on me and I wasn’t sure if he crashed or not. With the way he’s been riding this year, I knew that there was a chance he could catch back up and I just focused on lap times and kept pushing forward. I’m looking forward to the race tomorrow and finishing the season out strong.”
Second place went to M4 ECSTAR Suzuki’s Valentin Debise, the Frenchman’s 13th podium of the season, with Gerloff third, some 11 seconds behind after passing Team H35 Honda’s Benny Solis in the closing laps.
The Superstock 600 race was won by Riderz Law/Aguilar Racing’s Jason Aguilar and his fifth win of the season couldn’t have come at a better time. With Aguilar’s championship rival Michael Gilbert finishing fifth, Aguilar will take a 17-point lead into tomorrow’ season finale.
M4 medAge Suzuki’s Nick McFadden finished second to Aguilar with Tuned Racing’s Braeden Ortt rounding out the podium finishers.
Excel Machine Racing’s Connor Blevins ended up fourth with Gilbert and his Team MG55 Yamaha rounding out the top five.
Ventura Takes Points Lead Into Finale With the battle for the 2017 MotoAmerica KTM RC Cup Championship going down the wire at Barber Motorsports Park, the battle for the title is truly winner take all. And in part one of the two-part saga, the big winner was CSVMoto’s Cory Ventura.
Ventura came out on top of an incredible battle for victory, the Californian beating Savage Racing’s Sean Ungvarsky in a photo finish. More importantly for Ventura was the fact that Quarterley Racing/On Trace Development’s Benjamin Smith finished third. With Ventura and Smith coming into race one tied on points, Ventura now goes to Sunday’s race two with a nine-point lead. Still, nothing is settled and Smith was just .190 of a second behind Ventura at the finish line.
Smith’s teammates Draik Beauchamp and Gavin Anthony rounded out the top five finishers.
The most important non-finisher in terms of the championship was JP43 Junior Team’s Alex Dumas, the French Canadian crashing out of the lead group on the eighth of 11 laps. Dumas came into race one just a point behind Ventura and Smith, but he’s now 26 points behind with only 25 points up for grabs. Thus, he’s been eliminated from title contention. Ditto for Jackson Blackmon, who also crashed out of the race in his effort to get to the front after starting 16th on the grid.
With his fourth win of the season, Ventura leads Smith going into tomorrow’s finale, 249-240. Dumas is third with 223 points.
“It’s really all on the line this weekend with the championship going down to the wire,” said Ventura. “I just have to make sure I try my best again tomorrow. It was a crazy race, I honestly didn’t think I had the win today. The finish was so close I couldn’t really tell if I beat him (Sean Ungvarsky) until I looked up and saw the board.”

MotoAmerica joins World Supebike at Laguna Seca AMA Superbike
For the second time this season, MotoAmerica lands on the world stage as it shares Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca with the World Superbike Championship for round six of the 10-round 2017 MotoAmerica Series, the Honda Championship of the Monterey Peninsula, this coming weekend, July 7-9.

With the series just passing its halfway point in Utah two weeks ago, things are heating up and it's go-time for a lot of the riders in the series. None more so than two-time defending MotoAmerica Superbike Champion Cameron Beaubier, the Monster Energy/Yamalube/Y.E.S./Graves Yamaha rider falling 48 points behind championship leader Toni Elias and his Yoshimura Suzuki after crashing out of race one and finishing third in race two.
We're in a little bit of a hole in the championship, but I can't think of a better place to be going than Laguna Seca to get the ship righted, Beaubier said. I've had good success there in the past and it's always fun racing on the same weekend as World Superbike. All I can do at this point is win races and that's my plan. I have a great team behind me and we will keep fighting together and get ourselves back in this thing.
Fortunately for Beaubier, there's plenty left to play for 10 more Motul Superbike races, including the two at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, and 250 points. And such is the strength of the championship that a bad day for any of the top men could mean a sixth- or seventh-place finish. Not a guaranteed second.
But there is simply no denying the dominance of Elias at this point in the season. Case in point: Last year the Spaniard won six races in his rookie season of racing in MotoAmerica. After the first five rounds there have been 10 races and Elias has won six of them, already matching his win record for a season ago.
Thus he has the points lead by 30 over his consistent teammate Roger Hayden. And, as previously mentioned, he leads Beaubier by 48 points. Fourth place is held by Josh Hayes, the four-time AMA Superbike Champion 99 points behind Elias.
The man who sits fifth in the title chase is also the man who leads the Bazzaz Superstock 1000 Championship Mathew Scholtz. Scholtz and his Yamalube/Westby Racing R1 won race two in Utah after finishing second to Bobby Fong in race one. With Fong's crash in race two, Scholtz has 17 points on M4 ECSTAR Suzuki's Jake Lewis and 26 points on Fong.
The main drama in Utah came in the Supersport class when championship leader JD Beach crashed into his teammate Garrett Gerloff as the two battled for victory in race two. Although they were able to remount, neither scored points. Those all went to M4 ECSTAR Suzuki's Valentin Debise, the Frenchman winning his second race of the season.
The two Yamaha men still control the championship with Beach leading Gerloff by one point, 172-171, heading to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Debise gained some ground but is still 48 points behind in third.
The Superstock 600 class remains unpredictable after four rounds. At round one at Road Atlanta, Nick McFadden was the man to beat, sweeping to wins in both race. At round two in Virginia, it was all Michael Gilbert with two wins. Round three at Road America was dominated by Connor Blevins and at round four it was Jason Aguilar on the top step of the podium in both races.
The result: Just 10 points separates the top three in the championship with fourth place 31 points behind and still in contention. The top three: Aguilar (135 points), Gilbert (126 points), Blevins (125 points) with McFadden (104 points) fourth after coming back from collarbone surgery to finish a brave fifth and third two weeks ago in Utah.
The KTM RC Cup has also been a bit topsy-turvy, though Benjamin Smith has been the most consistent in the group and that's why he's your championship leader by 29 points over Jackson Blackmon. Blackmon and Smith have both won the same amount of races (three apiece), but Blackmon missed the first round at Road Atlanta while recovering from a broken arm. Blackmon's 3-1 tally in Utah moved him ahead of Draik Beauchamp, who crashed in race one and didn't take part in race two, and into second in the title chase. Beauchamp thus falls 48 points behind his Quarterley Racing teammate Smith.

With his two victories at the Utah Motorsports Campus in round five, Toni Elias now has six wins in the Motul Superbike class this year. Last year, Elias won his sixth race in the 18th and final race of the season. With his 12 career MotoAmerica Superbike victories, Elias has moved all the way up to 15th on the all-time AMA Superbike win list. Elias is tied for 15th with MotoAmerica rider representative Doug Chandler and is just one behind Doug Polen and Blake Young.
Four riders have won Motul Superbike races this season: Elias (6), Cameron Beaubier (2), Roger Hayden (1) and Josh Hayes (1).
Toni Elias earned pole position for last year's two Motul Superbike races at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, the Spaniard lapping at a best of 1:23.619 during Superpole to best Cameron Beaubier by just .004 of a second. Roger Hayden also made the front row with his 1:23.860.
Beaubier turned the tables on Elias in race one last year at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca by beating the Spaniard to the line by .300 of a second after 20 laps of the 2.2-mile race track on the Monterey Peninsula. Beaubier's teammate Josh Hayes was third, the four-time AMA Superbike Champion 1.8 seconds behind the battle for victory.
In race two, Josh Hayes came away with the win, besting Beaubier by just .257 of a second with Elias 1.6 seconds behind Hayes in third place.
Josh Herrin and Claudio Corti split wins in last year's Bazzaz Superstock 1000 races, which are run in the Motul Superbike class but are scored separately.
JD Beach destroyed the competition in last year's Supersport race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, the 2015 MotoAmerica Supersport Champion winning by 6.8 seconds over Valentine Debise. Defending MotoAmerica Supersport Champion Garrett Gerloff was third. Bryce Prince, meanwhile, was a runaway winner in the Superstock 600 class over Richie Escalante.
Last year's KTM RC Cup was far from a runaway with the top three finishers within .265 of a second of each other. Ashton Yates took the win by .046 of a second over Brandon Paasch with Anthony Mazziotto III third, .265 behind.
MotoAmerica president and three-time 500cc World Champion Wayne Rainey won two Superbike races at Laguna Seca (1983 and 1986) and three 500cc Grand Prix (1989, 1990 and 1991). MotoAmerica's Doug Chandler has also tasted success at Laguna, winning two Superbike races (1996 and 1997) as well as two Supersport races in April and July of 1998.
Hayes and Beaubier are the only current riders in the Superbike class to have tasted Superbike success at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. In addition to winning two Superbike races here (one race in both 2015 and 2016), Beaubier has also won three Daytona SportBike (now Supersport) races on the Monterey Peninsula. With his sixth Superbike win coming last year, Hayes is the winningest Superbike racer of all time at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
With its seven wins thus far in 2017 (six for Toni Elias, 1 for Roger Hayden), Suzuki now has a class-leading 188 AMA Superbike wins to its credit. Honda is second on the all-time win list with 116 victories while Yamaha sits third with 103 wins.
Of the active racers in the Superbike class, Josh Hayes leads the way with 61 Superbike wins. He also has 83 victories across all classes in his career. Hayes' all-time Superbike win total puts him second on the all-time list behind Mat Mladin's 82 Superbike victories. Hayes' 83 victories across all classes puts him just three wins behind Miguel Duhamel on the all-time list.

“President Bannon,” explained
Tumblr media
In the wake of the chaos following Trump’s order banning entry into the US from nationals of seven majority-Muslim countries — and in the wake of reports that Bannon was the chief architect of the policy — the hashtag #PresidentBannon began to spread on Twitter, and images of Bannon as a puppet master pulling Trump’s strings became commonplace. A Saturday Night Live skit concluded an Oval Office session with its version of Bannon asking Trump for the president’s desk back, and Alec Baldwin as Trump responding, “Yes, of course, Mr. President.”
On Monday morning, President Donald Trump decided that there was an urgent matter he needed to clear up for the public. “I call my own shots, largely based on an accumulation of data, and everyone knows it,” he tweeted. “Some FAKE NEWS media, in order to marginalize, lies!”
It may seem odd that the president of the United States would feel compelled to remind the country that he is actually in charge. But over the past week and a half of Trump’s young presidency, a narrative has been gaining steam in the media and among political observers that it is not Trump but in fact White House chief strategist Steve Bannon who is actually running the show.
President.”
Perhaps most prominently, Time magazine put Bannon on a striking cover and dubbed him “The Great Manipulator.” Just whom he might be manipulating was left unstated.
MSNBC host Joe Scarborough cited the Time cover in a Morning Joe segment Monday as an example of how “this Steve Bannon thing just keeps coming up, people are saying ‘President Steve Bannon.’” Scarborough added that it was very unusual for a White House staffer to develop such a high profile so quickly, and though he professed to believe that “Donald Trump is the final decider,” he said that other people keep wanting to hear about Bannon’s influence. (Trump’s “I call my own shots” tweet, which came less than an hour later, may have been a direct response to this exchange, and it also calls to mind President George W. Bush’s “I’m the decider” remark.)
For some, the “President Bannon” meme is useful as a deliberate attempt to annoy a president they view as thin-skinned and egotistical. But while it’s surely going too far to say that Bannon is “the real president” — he does work for Trump and serve at his pleasure, after all — the chief strategist has indeed been remarkably influential in shaping the new administration so far. Not only are his fingerprints all over the most controversial parts of Trump’s immigration actions, but that same weekend Trump announced another order that gave Bannon a full seat on the National Security Council Principals Committee, which is unprecedented for a White House political adviser.
Furthermore, while the “powerful political aide skilled in the dark, manipulative arts” is a common trope, Bannon isn’t just any aide. His prominence is particularly noteworthy because there are indications that he is more hard-line than Trump in certain ways. Where Trump has said he loves legal immigration, Bannon has called it a “problem.” Where Trump has often been cozy with moneyed elites on Wall Street and in Hollywood, Bannon professes to despise them. Bannon has even predicted that the US will go to war in the South China Sea within five to 10 years.
Many liberals, and even many conservatives, therefore find Bannon’s apparent influence on Trump immensely disturbing. And that’s just the way Bannon likes it.
1) Who is Steve Bannon?
Bannon (left) in 2012, a few months after the death of Andrew Breitbart (pictured at back). Brian van der Brug/Los Angeles Times via Getty Stephen K. Bannon grew up in Virginia, served in the Navy, went to Harvard Business School, became a banker at Goldman Sachs, and eventually got very, very rich from a deal in which he got a share of royalties from the TV show Seinfeld. His wealth freed him up to pursue his own interests, first as a documentary filmmaker and then as a close associate of Andrew Breitbart, the conservative political activist who founded the website Breitbart News. After Breitbart himself died suddenly in 2012, Bannon took over the site as executive chair.
Under Bannon, Breitbart News filled a unique role in the conservative media ecosystem. The site was relentlessly critical of Obama and top Democrats, but also of top Republicans it portrayed as sellouts to powerful interests, like House Speaker Paul Ryan and his predecessor John Boehner. The site’s tone and editorial choices on racial matters are also the subject of major controversy — the site spotlights tales of lurid crimes committed by unauthorized immigrants, Muslims, and African Americans, and Bannon himself has called the site “the platform for the alt-right,” according to Mother Jones.
So when Trump launched his presidential campaign, the anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim, anti-elite rhetoric he used all sounded familiar to Breitbart readers. Under Bannon, Breitbart News’s coverage became staunchly pro-Trump. Few then were surprised when, in an August 2016 shake-up, Trump brought on Bannon as his campaign CEO — this was merely the formalization of an alliance that had already existed for many months. When Trump unexpectedly won the election, he decided to reward Bannon with a top White House job. (Josh Green wrote the definitive pre–White House profile of Bannon, and Zack Beauchamp has a fuller explainer on the history of Bannon and Breitbart.)
2) Why would anyone get the idea that Bannon has a different agenda than Trump?
In mid-November, Democratic Sens. Chris Van Hollen and Jeff Merkley held a press conference to denounce Bannon’s White House appointment. (Photo By Tom Williams/CQ Roll Call) The idea that Steve Bannon might be manipulating Donald Trump to advance his own agenda doesn’t come out of nowhere — in fact, it comes from Bannon’s own lips. As late as summer 2016, when Bannon was still at Breitbart and just months before he moved to the Trump campaign, he told a journalist that Trump was a “blunt instrument for us” and said, “I don’t know whether he really gets it or not.”
Who is the “us” there? Overall, Bannon sees himself, Breitbart, and now Trump as allies in what he calls a “global populist movement,” which is taking back the interests of “the people” against various malefactors like rapacious capitalists, open borders “globalists,” unauthorized immigrants, and radical Islamists. He’s the type of person who pontificates a lot about how “the Judeo-Christian West” is under siege, and who thinks the US and many European governments are failing to appropriately defend the interests of people born there.
The word Bannon has embraced to describe this movement is “nationalism.” Indeed, he sees himself and Trump as embarking on a conscious project to demolish the old American political camps and “build an entirely new political movement," he told Michael Wolff in November. "I'm not a white nationalist, I'm a nationalist. I'm an economic nationalist," he continued. “It will be as exciting as the 1930s, greater than the Reagan revolution — conservatives, plus populists, in an economic nationalist movement."
According to the Daily Beast’s Ronald Radosh, Bannon gave an even more grandiose statement of his motivations a few years back. He called himself a “Leninist” because “Lenin wanted to destroy the state, and that’s my goal too. I want to bring everything crashing down, and destroy all of today’s establishment.” (Bannon now claims he doesn’t remember saying this.)
But despite Bannon’s denials, there are unmistakable racial and ethnic aspects to the movement he’s building, and critics argue “white nationalism” is in fact the key to his project. Bannon has often sought to drum up political support (in the form of either pageviews or votes) by mobilizing white Americans against various frightening “others” — whether they’re Black Lives Matter protesters, immigrants, or refugees.
Much of this fits quite well with Trump’s worldview. But Trump has also appointed many more traditional Republicans to his administration, and could conceivably be swayed toward more mainstream policies as a result. Bannon also seems to genuinely differ from Trump on a couple fronts. First, there’s sometimes a religious tinge to his rhetoric — he’s argued that “secularism has sapped the strength of the Judeo-Christian West to defend its ideals,” and has even taken an interest in internal Vatican disputes.
Second, while Trump says legal immigration is wonderful, Bannon views it as a “problem and thinks it needs to be cut back.” This was dramatically demonstrated in an exchange the two had on Bannon’s radio show in November 2015, in which Bannon made the false claim that most Silicon Valley CEOs were from Asia and expressed his unhappiness with that. “A country’s more than an economy. We’re a civic society,” he said.
Not just illegal immigrants but immigrants in general, Bannon seemed to believe, were sapping America’s Americanness. In this, he goes further than Trump, but he’s in alignment with several other important figures in the new administration. Most prominent among these are attorney general nominee Jeff Sessions and several former Sessions aides, including senior White House adviser Stephen Miller. Past public statements make clear that Bannon, Sessions, and Miller are all harsh critics of even legal immigration. In some tellings, they are frequently pitted against more traditional Republicans in administration disputes.
3) What is Bannon’s White House job?
It’s hardly unprecedented for a president to give a political adviser a top job, as George W. Bush did for Karl Rove and Barack Obama did for David Axelrod. But recent incoming presidents have tended to designate one chief of staff who is indisputably in charge.
Not Trump. In a November press release, the Trump transition announced that Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus would be chief of staff — but that Bannon would fill the newly created position of “chief strategist.” Priebus and Bannon, the press release said, would work as “equal partners.” And yet Kremlinologists couldn't help noticing that Bannon’s name was listed first.
Bannon, it should be noted, fits the stereotype of the sinister political adviser to a T —and even seems to revel in it. “Darkness is good,” he told Wolff. “Dick Cheney. Darth Vader. Satan. That's power.” Note that Bannon said this after the election and his appointment to a top White House job. (These comments are why Saturday Night Live portrayed him as the Grim Reaper in its recent skit.)
But as chief strategist, Bannon is more than just a political adviser. He’s taken on a major role in policy and is, by most accounts, the leading force in crafting the Trump administration’s agenda — especially the series of White House–issued executive orders with which Trump began his presidency. “Mr. Bannon has rushed into the vacuum, telling allies that he and Mr. Miller have a brief window in which to push through their vision of Mr. Trump’s economic nationalism,” the New York Times’s Glenn Thrush and Maggie Haberman report.
4) So where did “President Bannon” come from?
As the transition proceeded, many top White House positions and Cabinet jobs went to traditional Republicans rather than Bannon-esque outsiders, suggesting to some observers that the steady hand of Priebus was at the helm and that the Trump administration might actually end up being surprisingly normal.
That narrative exploded on January 27, Trump’s seventh full day in office. On that day, Trump issued the executive order meant to block all refugees, and nationals of seven majority-Muslim countries, from entering the US for several months.
Chaos ensued. Hundreds of people who had been previously cleared to enter the US were detained at airports around the country or prevented from boarding their flights to the US at all. Shockingly, the administration initially applied the entry ban to green card holders too, even though many of them had lived and worked in the US for years. Thousands turned out to protest, even many Republicans started to criticize the order, and a series of lawsuits soon brought the policy to a screeching halt.
The blame game that ensued during and after all this made clear the order was a Steve Bannon production. A set of reports described the order as crafted by Bannon and Miller with minimal input from the relevant agencies. One of its most objectionable features — the ban on entry for green card holders — was personally dictated by Bannon and Miller over the Department of Homeland Security’s objections, according to CNN’s Evan Perez and Pamela Brown.
Furthermore, it turned out that Bannon had a starring role in the other executive action Trump signed alongside the immigration order that Friday. This order gave Bannon a permanent seat on the Principals Committee of the National Security Council, placing him among the president’s top foreign policy advisers — an unprecedented role for a political hand.
Thrush and Haberman report that Trump was angry afterward because he “was not fully briefed” on that order’s details, and that it was an even “greater source of frustration to the president than the fallout from the travel ban.” (However, Time’s Zeke Miller has his own source saying that Trump was in fact briefed on Bannon’s new role.) In any case, the reports on Bannon’s role in the immigration order converged with this NSC order, and the “President Bannon” meme was born, making him a sort of combination Dick Cheney/Karl Rove figure in the minds of liberals.
5) What’s next for Bannon in the White House?
The fallout from the travel ban controversy has apparently led to Bannon being reined in somewhat. Both the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post report Trump has clarified to his staff that Priebus is his top aide and that policy changes have to go through him and through a more rigorous vetting process.
By all accounts, though, Bannon remains very influential, and there’s no real talk of him being on the outs with Trump — not yet, at least. Indeed, Bannon and Trump have come a long way together. They share similar pugilistic instincts and a willingness to flout the political class’s conventional wisdom. Plus, it’s understandable if Trump places a great deal of stock in Bannon’s political instincts, since Bannon did oversee a campaign that put him in the White House despite the predictions of practically every expert.
But Bannon will only continue to keep that influence if Trump is satisfied with how his presidency is going. And while the strategy of constantly throwing red meat to the base worked well to boost Breitbart News’s traffic numbers and to win Trump the election, it has not worked so well when it comes to governance. All it has done so far is earned Trump record-low job approval for a new president.
So at some point, Trump may have to decide whether holding on to the loyalty of Bannon’s movement is really enough. Perhaps he might decide he’d prefer trying to convert some new voters to his side. And if he does opt for that route, Steve Bannon may no longer be so useful to him.
