HARTFORD WOLF PACK BEAT WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON PENGUINS
Tumblr media
By: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings WILKES-BARRE, PA - The Hartford Wolf Pack defeated the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 5-1 to finish their final three-in-three weekend of the season in a strong fashion at the Mohegan Sun Arena on Sunday. With eight games to go, the win sets up a major contest with in-state, Atlantic Division rival, the Bridgeport Islanders (30-25-7-1 68 points). The Wolf Pack trail Bridgeport by one point for the last playoff spot in the Atlantic Division. They head for a showdown for a crucial mid-week showdown Wednesday night at the XL Center. In the third period, the Wolf Pack (28-25-4-7 67 points) effectively kept the Penguins, undermanned by recalls and injuries, under wraps and at bay to secure the win. With Libor Hajek in the penalty box on a Tripping call at 9:40,  on the resulting power play, Drew Cagguila collided with Jonny Brodzinski at the Penguins' blue line. Afterward, Cagguila got back into the flow and received a pass at the midway point of the Wolf Pack zone. He then found Jon Gruden all alone on the left wing-side. Gruden wired a shot high to the short side inside the right post on Louis Domingue to register the only Penguins goal on the power play at 10:31. That made it 4-1, and it remained that way until, with only 36 seconds left, Turner Elson took a Tim Gettinger pass to score the empty net goal for the 5-1 final. The Penguins had plenty of Grade-A scoring chances that Domingue stopped.  Tyler Sikura, Sam Houde, and Nathan Légaré all challenged Domingue with their chances only to see those chances evaporate. With 4:06 left, Filip Hållander had a golden opportunity over a down on the ice Domingue but put his backhander over the crossbar. After Josh Maniscalco's effort that Domingue denied, the Pack netminder tried to shoot for the empty net after former Pack goaltender Dustin Tokarski was pulled for an extra attacker, but his airborne attempt was knocked down in the zone and forced him to make a save instead. The Pack could have scored two final empty net goals, but Tanner Fritz’s tally was ruled offside. SECOND PERIOD In the second period, the Penguins came out gunning and fired the first seven shots before the Pack registered their first shot at 9:35. Despite being held to one credited shot on goal to that point, the Pack made the second one count. Newcomer Anton Blidh tallied his tenth of the season after Turner Elson fired it behind the net. Penguins defenseman Jon Lizotte mishandled the puck and gave it right to Blidh, who quickly lifted it over Tokarski's right shoulder, off the crossbar, and in for a 4-0  lead at 10:27. Shortly afterward, the Penguins nearly scored as Peter DiLibertore’s dump-in ricocheted off a stanchion that separates the glass behind the net, which trapped Domingue, who was out to play the puck. The carom went to Cagguila, but a combination of defenseman Wyatt Kalynuk and Domingue each got a piece of the puck and incredibly kept it out of the net at 10:54. With 3:06 left, Tokarski made a remarkable right skate save, preventing Will Cullye from a goal celebration. He then stopped Will Lockwood with a blocker save and denied Elson with 1:31 remaining. Blidh, just one game removed from returning from his transatlantic trip from Sweden, put the puck off the crossbar on Tokarski. FIRST PERIOD The Pack controlled the game from the start in a must-win game situation. 16 seconds after the opening faceoff, Zac Jones maneuvered with the puck through the whole Penguins team and fired the first Wolf Pack shot of the game that found the back of the net. It was the fastest-scored goal for the Pack to start a road game this season and second fastest overall. It was Jones' eighth of the season. At 6:25, the Wolf Pack pushed the gas pedal to the floor as Ryan Carpenter was on the left wing side. He found Will Lockwood, speeding through the middle of the ice and surging past the Penguins' defense, and gave him the puck. Lockwood registered his second Wolf Pack goal and 14th of the season overall for the 2-0 lead. Former Quinnipiac player and now Penguins' defenseman Peter DiLiberatore put the puck out of play, earning a two-minute visit to the penalty box for a Delay of Game call at 13:19. It took the Pack only 14 seconds to make the Penguins pay for the 23-year-old's mistake. Fritz was low the right-wing wall and fired a perfect cross-ice pass through the box to Pack captain Jonny Brodzinski, who buried his 19th of the season at 13:33. At 18:05, rookie Brett Berard had a quality chance on one of the 14 shots the Pack fired at Tokarski, who was just sent down from the parent Pittsburgh Penguins. LINES: Cullye-Leschyshyn-Brodzinski Gettinger-Lockwood-Carpenter Fritz-Pajuniemi-Blidh Elson-Berard-Trivigno Jones-Emberson Hájek-Scanlin Clendening- Kalynuk Domingue Garand SCRATCHES: Matt Robertson (Upper-body, long-term) Cristiano DiGiacinto (Healthy) Karl Henriksson (Healthy) Matt Rempe (Healthy) Blake Hillman (Healthy) Patrick Khordorenko (Season-ending shoulder surgery) C.J. Smith (Hip area surgery done for the season) NOTES: Wilkes Barrer/Scranton recalled Louie Roehl from the Wheeling Nailers (ECHL), but he was scratched. Quinnipiac was victorious at the NCAA Regional in Bridgeport 4-1 over Ohio State. They advance to the Frozen Four in Tampa against Michigan, where Sandy Hook’s Mackie Samoskevich (Chicago) scored at 52 seconds of overtime with a lightning wrist shot over Penn State that sent Michigan to their 27th Frozen Four appearance. Boston University, who feature former Avon Old Farms player Jamie Armstrong, the son of Arizona Coyotes' GM Bill Armstrong, will play Bryce Brodzinski, the youngest brother of Jonny Brodzinski and Minnesota, in the other semifinal game. Next Saturday night’s Wolf Pack game against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms will be broadcast on the NHL Network live in a prime-time slot at 7 PM. HARTFORD WOLF PACK HOME Read the full article

NHL Expansion Draft 2021: Full list of players available for Seattle Kraken
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The NHL announced the protected lists for the 30 teams involved in the NHL Expansion Draft. (Vegas is exempt.) With the names of those protected come the guys who could be snatched up by the Seattle Kraken. There are a number of big names that have everyone trying to figure out just what general manager Ron Francis will do. Will he take Canadiens netminder, and future Hall of Famer, Carey Price and his hefty cap hit? Is Vladimir Tarasenko the sniper he needs or is his health a big question mark? There's also a number of guys who would fit in nicely but are free agents and the chances of signing them are not high (i.e. Alex Ovechkin).  EXPANSION DRAFT: Date, time, rules & more for Seattle Kraken team selectionRegardless of what Francis, coach Dave Hakstrol and Co. end up doing, there's a good chance the Kraken will be a playoff contender in just their first season. For now, let the intrigue and the guessing WWRFD (that's: what will Ron Francis do?) begin. Here's a look at every player they can pick.

Artist’s Biography
I was born "the day the music died" (from Don McLean’s “American Pie”) Feb. 3, 1959. Buddy Holly's plane crashed in the wee hours of the same morning my mom gave birth to me. Because of my connection to this fateful day, I have always considered part of my purpose in life to help keep the music alive. Sometime around 1969, I fell in love with the songs I was hearing through the earplug of my transistor radio. The tunes of The Doors, Neil Young, Jim Croce, Seals and Crofts, Carol King, Cat Stevens, Chicago, and America gave me a soundscape for understanding some of the unknown things I was feeling. At age 13, I picked up the guitar and discovered an avenue for self-expression in writing and singing my own songs. Artistic endeavors were my private ambitions. When my parents divorced in 1973, I would rely heavily on these diversions to help me survive the trauma of watching my world blow apart. Over my 60-some years of travels and travails, I have written and recorded 9 albums of original music to document my life’s journey. In 1986, after my brief career as a professional pastor I recorded my self-titled debut album, "Dan Gilliam" and sold about 100 copies to friends and family. The circulation of this cassette helped to open local doors for me in Cincinnati, OH and other Midwestern towns to perform my songs for drug prevention school assemblies. This led to the writing and recording of my second album, "A Good Used Brain is Hard to Find"(1988) containing songs I performed for school audiences in 40 states. Good friend and guitar slayer, Craig Brammer played and co-produced on these two albums. Assisted and inspired by my classic-rock cover band "Pacer", I recorded "Storms and Love" in 1991, a collection of folk-rock love songs. Greg Unthank, Mike Duncan and Terry Duncan contributed heavily to this album. In 1993, after snooping around the alleyways and back doors of contemporary Christian music, I wrote and recorded “Shake the Walls” which led to many performances at churches and Christian coffee houses. In the ensuing years, I found myself sharing the stage with many well known Christian artists such as Servant,  Big Tent Revival, Jennifer Knapp, The Newsboys, Audio Adrenaline, Chris Lizotte, All Star United, Bleach, Sonic Flood, The 77s, and Richard Swift. For the most part, however, I have performed my music and told my stories in relative obscurity. "Farm Café", my bare bones 1995 recording was the beginning of me finding my true voice as a singer and songwriter. I sold over 500 copies of this album from the trunk of my car the first year and made a conscious decision that whether or not the world wanted another performing artist I was going to be one. In 1997, I traveled to New Haven, IN to record "The Color of God" at Monastic Chambers studio with Jon Gillespie, Bart Rendel, Craig Eakright, and Jeremy Tisland. Selling out my first 1,000 copies of this cd in less than a year allowed me to put aside the cash for my 1999 record "I Am Not Like God". I was fortunate to have much help from guitar aficionado Rich Nibbe, drummer Josh Lanting, and worship leader and songwriter, Chris Lizotte. In 2001, while living in Cottage Grove, Oregon I recorded "Simple God Songs". Mega-talented guitarist/producer Keith Schneider and drummer Jonathan Behr contributed to this eclectic mix of musical stories, interestingly recorded in the studio my friend, Richard Swift, would later call National Freedom. This album represented a return to my spare, acoustic-oriented style of writing and performing. As of today, none of these albums have been released on any record label and remain largely undiscovered and undocumented by the corporate music industry. Thanks to https://store.cdbaby.com/Artist/DanGilliam, however, many of my songs are now all available for digital download on most music purchasing sites. I started to take painting seriously around 1995. Reading biographies of great painters such as Georgia O’Keefe, Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Pablo Picasso, and American outsider artist Harland Hubbard, I was inspired from the beginning to be true to myself and find my own voice. Being an untrained artist I didn’t know what was and was not allowed, so I simply began to put paints on canvasses and place the finished pieces on stage with me at my concerts. As the result, I have sold paintings all over the country to people who fell in love with my art while listening to my music. These days I sell most of my paintings through Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/DansArtFriends/). In March of 2007, a book of my spiritual, creative, traveling  memoirs entitled, “God Touches: Finding Faith in the Cracks and Spaces of My Life” was published by Standard Publishing (Cinti., OH). It is now out of print, but available at several book sites online. In 2017, I self-published a book about my slow and debilitating recovery from septic shock and Post-Sepsis Syndrome. It is entitled, Septic Shock and Awe: A Story of Trauma, Survival, and Spiritual Discovery and is available in e-book form here: https://www.blurb.com/b?ebook=646334. My tenth album of original songs, “Heartbreak Takeout”, which I am recording here in Longmont, CO, will be available in early 2020. https://www.facebook.com/DanGilliamMusic/

The Secret To Writing Lyrics
Tumblr media
youtube
Lyrics are one of the most important aspects of songwriting: They’re the first thing most people listen to, and they convey your song’s story more clearly than anything else. But they’re really hard, right? Language is so complicated and weird that many of the structural approaches we theorists like to take for chords and stuff just don’t work. Well, fortunately for us, we’re not the only ones asking these sorts of questions, and the answers are out there. We just have to look a little further afield.

CANTLON: PENS WIN IN OT OVER PACK
Tumblr media
BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - Adam Johnson’s penalty shot goal at 1:47 of overtime allowed the Wilkes Barre/Scranton Penguins to pull out a 4-3 win before a season-best XL Center crowd of 7,438. The situation presented itself when the Wolf Pack’s Nick Ebert fell down near the left-wing boards at the blue line and the Penguins Adam Johnson picked up the loose puck and was off to the races. Vinni Lettieri makes a valiant effort to get back as he shot but clearly interfered with Johnson who was awarded the rarest play of all--an overtime penalty shot. Johnson went in on Adam Huska decided to go with a forehand to backhand move and slipped his ninth of the season past him at 1:47. “Something about this building we’ve been playing pretty good in it. Adam hasn’t had a lot of luck in shootouts, so it was nice to see him get that. His speed is dynamic and when you get a break like that you got to make the most of it and he did,” said Wilkes Barre head coach Mike Vellucci. The Pack’s bench boss Kris Knoblauch couldn’t dispute the call. “A penalty shot was the right call. It was a tough way to end a game.” The penalty shot was the 43rd against Hartford, but the first one in overtime in 23 years. The Wolf Pack had a great chance to start the third period on the powerplay and only managed two shots. The powerplay was 0-4 and the opportunity was there just let them slip through. “When you need that powerplay goal it just disappoints you when you don’t score, but we did bounce back and we fought back,” said Knoblauch. The Wolf Pack had the chance and it was the Penguin who got the goal. After the penalty expired Cole Cassels started a rush up ice fed Adam Johnson as they crossed into Wolf Pack territory and he, in turn, slipped a short pass over to Kevin Roy, who in one motion ripped his 11th goal far side on Huska at 3:31 that allowed Wilkes Barre/Scranton to slip ahead 3-2. Cassels picked up his second point to make the play happen has been gaining more ice time with the Penguins and making it count. “He’s a good kid and a good player,” remarked Vellucci “The last few years they didn’t let him be an offensive guy. He really is a 200-foot game guy and he has really good hands as you saw on the first goal and getting that play started you see, he’s a smart player as well The Wolf Pack fought through the defensive maze of Wilkes Barre to tie the game at three overcoming their third deficit of the night and breathed life into the possible late-game theatrics trying to win the game. Steve Fogarty getting the puck up to Nick Ebert who spotted an open Vitali Kravtsov surging to the middle threaded the pass between two players to send the Russian in on a breakaway, Kravtsov put on the afterburner saw ex-Pack goalie Dustin Tokarski feet were locked up and zipped his fifth goal of the season five-hole to tie the gamer at three at 10:39. The Wolf Pack had two solid chances late, no better one with 1:32 left with Vinni Lettieri in close wide open, but  Tokarski made the save. “We did a lot of good things tonight. We were just fighting it too much at times,” remarked a clearly frustrated Lettieri knowing he had a golden opportunity. The Pack’s Patrick Newell had a grade-A chance searching out and forcing a turnover and then taking the puck turning and firing through a screen, that Tokarski blocked blindly with his blocker with 4:20 left that fell at his feet, but the Pack couldn’t get at the loose puck. The first three to five minutes of the second period was wild and wooly. The Wolf Pack tied at 45 seconds as Vinni Lettieri curling off left-wing half wall got the play started sending a diagonal cross-ice pass to Vincent LoVerde who then took his pass finding an open Danny O’ Regan at the left side of the Penguins net O’ Regan partially fanned on the shot, but the net was wide open for the puck to slide over the goal line before Tokarksi could dive over and pull it back for his 11th of the season. The Penguins answered back as the defense combo last week that got the better of the Wolf Pack did so again. Pierre Olivier-Joseph zipped it over to Jon Lizotte who put a perfect low shot that rookie Ryan Scarfo, playing just his fourth game on recall from Wheeling (ECHL) perfectly redirected past Adam Huska at 2:16. The Wolf Pack on the penalty kill tried to stay back as Danny O ‘Regan burst down the right-wing with a semi-breakaway. He cut across the net caught a hook/slash from Derek Warsofsky lost control of the puck and Tim Gettinger was there took a shot and the goal horn was inadvertently sounded and immediately waved off, but the Wolf Pack got a powerplay out of it, but the Wolf Pack couldn’t connect. The Penguins scored first as John Nyberg from left point let a good low slapper go and Cole Cassels who lost a goal here last time got credit for this one again on a deflection in front for his seventh of the season at 11:16. It was ironic that the son of former Whaler Andrew  Cassels would score the first goal on Hartford Heritage Hockey Night. The Wolf Pack tied it two-on-one of the stranger goals of the season. The Penguins Olivier-Joseph was forced into coughing up the puck with checking along the right-wing boards. Vitali Kravtsov got the loose puck on the right-wing sent a pass to Darren Raddysh, drifting to the left side who let a rocket go that missed the net, but went right to Lettieri. From behind the goal line, he put the puck back toward the net and it went off Tokarski’s left leg and into the net for his team-best 23rd goal with 37.3 seconds left. That gave the Wolf Pack the momentum back before the period ended. “Anything can happen around the net, You’re always taught you just have to shoot when the goalie isn’t expecting it,” commented Lettieri scoring just his second goal in the last seven games. The Wolf Pack in the first period had four shots in the first five minutes and then just four in the final 15 of action as the two teams had a very close-to-the-vest period. The Wolf Pack best chances came from Ty Ronning and Brandon Crawley had two shots on net. The Penguins countered in their five other shots with Riley Barber just acquired from Laval with a right drive stop by Huska and late Sam Miletic had strong bids turned aside. NOTES: “Obviously, we wanted to win, but we just have to leave it behind us and get ready for tomorrow,” said Lettieri. The next home is next Sunday, March 1st at 3 PM against Providence. The penalty shot was Huska’s third he has faced and the third he was scored upon. In fact, the last five penalty shots by opponents have all been successful. The other goalies have to faced three include Jeff Malcolm, Steve Valiquette, Johan Holmquist, and Brandon Halverson had four. The most, Chad Johnson had six tossed his way in his Wolf Pack career. LINES: Fogarty-Kravtsov-Beleskey Jones-Newell-Gettinger O’Regan-Lettieri-Gropp McBride-Dmowski-Ronning Hajek-Raddysh Ebert-Geersten Crawley-LoVerde SCRATCHES: Boo Nieves - Upper body injury - Out indefinitely (He skated in practice the last few days for the first time in more than a week) Yegor Rykov - Healthy (Sixth time in the last eight games) Jake Elmer - Healthy Gabriel Fontaine - Shoulder Surgery - Season-ending NOTES: The ceremonial puck drop was two ex-Pack players, Stefan Cherneski and a big surprise, John Tripp. Wolf Pack Fan Jersey of the game. #25 Jake Taylor (Head coach Lakeville, MN HS), #44 Ryan Hollweg (retired), a pair of #7’s Drew Bannister (head coach in San Antonio) and a retired Lee Sorochan. #9 Nigel “Burger King “ Dawes (Avtomobilst Yaketerinburg Russia-KHL), #30 Ryan Haggerty (Springfield), #29 Ryan Cuthbert, who played just 25 games, #19 Benoit Dusablon (retired) whose linemate was John Tripp. UCONN Huskies on the strength of Sasha Payusov’s hat trick routed Boston University 6-1 in Boston Saturday night.
