*Locked Tomb Spoilers*
Love the way Tamsyn Muir is using the trope of the beautiful dead girl from 19th century literature for her own purposes. It’s giving Emily Dickinson and I love her for that. It’s this image used by Gothic male writers (like Edgar Allen Poe who is directly referenced in relation to Alecto) that glorifies the beautiful, dead woman as the pinnacle of womanhood almost. She’s beautiful and sans personality and agency, which is a sickening symbol when you think about it. The idea of John purposefully crafting Alecto to look like a Barbie doll further enforces this idea of her as his plaything. The idea of Alecto as this incredibly power entity full of rage is so appealing because it’s Tamsyn’s way of exploiting the trope in her own book full of Gothic trappings. Alecto’s creation was the result of John stealing her agency and he locked her in the tomb because people were afraid of her. She is dangerous and unpredictable and full of justified rage. I love it. It also overlaps significantly with the idea of the beautiful dead princess in the coffin. A lot of TLT vibes remind me subtly of Dickinson to be honest.
I think overall Tamsyn’s thematic arc in these books is actively pushing against the idea of a beautiful dead thing being the pinnacle of desire/great purpose. She does this through Alecto as a character, Harrow’s guilty devotion to a religious death that’s keeping her from pursuing her desires (see “She walked to death like a lover”), and Gideon’s constant need to sacrifice herself (tied to a lack of self-worth). The story is pushing towards expanding upon the “You could have lived for her” line in Nona because as much as these books have trappings of death, they’re about learning how to really live and love in a cruel world.

AU where Jod decides to fill the Lyctor shaped hole in his heart with his frozen planet girlfriend(?).
Harrow wakes up very confused. Even more so than Jod.
Jod: Harrow, it's not that I'm unhappy to see you, but what the heck are you doing in my anthropomorphic planet?
Harrow: Well, I was at Canaan House with all the dead house heirs and my former cavalier who was blown up by my marshal/first father figure, and we decided to summon a guy from my ex cav's poetry- WAIT, WHERE'S MY ACTUAL CAVALIER; IS GIDEON OKAY?
Jod: Oh yeah, she's fine. She's the Crown Prince now.
Harrow: MY AUs ARE BECOMING REALITY?!?
Jod returns to whereever he left Gideon and Ianthe like "Hey, funny story, guess who else has funky body swap shenanigans going on?"
Gideon loses her shit. Ianthe very deliberately puts out her cigarette and goes "I can work with that."
Harrow meanwhile is unknowingly mirroring Nona by trying to kiss her reflection.
Gideon: (desperately trying to joke through the tears) You know, Harrow, when I told you to go fuck yourself I didn't mean it literally.
Then they have a full blown screaming match that somehow ends with them making out for half an hour.
Gideon: Holy shit, Harrow, you're a necrophiliac.
Ianthe: Guess I should get Babs' body out of cold storage.
Gideon: GROSS!
Gideon: Also, HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WATCHING?!?
Harrow: I am going to kill both of you.
She does not kill both of them.
When Harrow and Nonafinally meet they simultaneously try to negotiate the extension of current body custodies ad infinitum. Both of them are 100% convinced that they're getting the better end of the deal.
Gideon is suffering.
Ianthe is amused.
Harrow has to face the fact that she may be acquiring a harem.

forgot that the last scene in nona the ninth was alecto stabbing john through the chest when he's asleep, and he just wakes up, smiles, and says "hello, annabel." and that's the end of the book. i like to think that's just how they greet each other. just like "[stabs you]" "hi babe i missed you"

The only TLT relationship i think about more than griddlehark is probably John and Alecto. She chose him to save the world and he hurt her and she still loves him and he made her into a monster but she is his monster and he won't let anyone call her a monster and he put her in thomb and he misses her and she loves her eyes because they are his and the first thing she does after she awakes is stab him in the chest and he smiles because he gets to see her even though it's probably the end for him/his world and ugh!
I just have so many feelings about them!
#there's probably some catholic symbolism im missing but idc#i just want him to make it up to her and i want them to be happy ok#the blorbos#john gaius#alecto the first#tlt#the locked tomb#john x alecto#jod

#I think thematically it would be helpful to think of it as a parallel to Gideon and Harrow in Harrow the Ninth #when Gideon was in her sepulchre she had VERY strong opinions on her soul being dissevered from her surviving partner's #even though it would have destroyed her not to be #destroy me according to thy word for I love thee #destroy me as I am but I want to kiss you before I am killed #Alecto still loves John even after he has destroyed her and even after he has taught her how to die#this is all the same theme #John and Alecto's love isn't any different or easier to lose and it will probably be a very very difficult decision for her to make
There's a stanza from Annabel Lee that's been tickling my brainstem for a while, and it feels even more relevant now that we know how John and Alecto are bound together, and that their love was and still is mutual:
But our love it was stronger by far than the love Of those who were older than we— Of many far wiser than we— And neither the angels in Heaven above Nor the demons down under the sea Can ever dissever my soul from the soul Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
That's the heart of it, isn't it? The source of all of John's power, the reason he's God, it's because his soul is connected to his Annabel Lee's. To end all of this, they'll need to be dissevered.
I'd say that the angels have already tried and failed, and the demons look like they're winding up to take a shot. Odds are that'll go about as well for them as it did for Augustine and Mercy. But there's someone the poem doesn't ask. It doesn't account for Annabel.
I think that may be why it matters so much that that Alecto still loves John, and where the true horror of love comes in. If Alecto's soul is going to be seperated from John's, Alecto has to want it. No one else can do it for her. Annabel Lee has to become the subject, and not the object.
