more rambly thoughts
so not only does the mage companion (well, one of them) betray the party but it’s also the wlw love interest! so double bioware whammy! and she was going to sell her girlfriend back into slavery! yay!
(she does have a fun backstory/motivation I will admit)
rezaren will 100% be the fan favourite and woobified by the end of the week in fact I won’t be surprised if we see essays defending his actions by the end of the day
I will say that I genuinely enjoyed him as the antagonist though. they played around with the idea of him as a Good Tevinter (he wants to reform! he doesn’t like blood magic! he likes elves!) and then believably revealed him as just as bad. and that’s what’s key: it felt believable, natural from his backstory. despite all his insistence that everything he did was for his ‘brother’ and ‘sister’, he still saw them as his possessions. I also really liked tassia. i’d love to see more of her (let me romance her in dreadwolf, bioware... she’s single now!!!)
they legit killed off fairbanks like two episodes in wowwwwww
the pacing is so bad, especially in the first few episodes. it improves throughout the season but there’s also some really clunky moments in the last couple of episodes.
miriam and hira are kind of... tbh not that compelling. hira only really gets interesting once her backstory and true motivations are revealed, while miriam just feels very Main Character TM. roland, lacklon, and qwydion are easily the best of the group. if any of those three return in-game, I’d be happy.
I loved roland x lacklon! it built slowly and felt natural! dwarven mlm! amazing!
M E R E D I T H
I actually can’t get over this
I gasped out loud
FUCKING MEREDITH

Video Game Questionnaire
Was tagged by @insufficient-focus and @roguescarlett (on my main blog, but will do it here anyway XD)
Rules: Fill in your answers below and tag some buddies!
-Games-
First game you ever played: My memory is a bit hazy of exactly which game it was, but one of the first games I remember playing is Super Mario Bros.
Favorite game: Choosing a single game here is too tough. So will kinda list off a few of my favorites. Dragon Quest XI (and series), Star Wars Galaxies, KOTOR 1-2, SWTOR, Halo 2, Dark Souls 1 and 3, Legend of Zelda Wind Waker Skyrim, and others...
Game you hated at first but now love: When I was younger I had a very love hate relationship with Dragon quest 8. When it came out I’d see my sister playing it and having a lot of fun. Anytime I’d try to play though I’d get super lost and was too unfocused to really pay attention to where to go. Now that I’m older and have a better attention span, I absolutely love the game.
Game you used to love but now hate: I don’t think I really hate any game. I’ve been disappointed with a few games but they were never games I loved from the beginning anyway XD
Game with the best group/companion(s): There are so many good games with great companions. It may because I’ve played it more recently, but Dragon Quest XI has some of my favorite group companions.
A game with your favorite ending: In recent memory Dragon Quest XI and Red Dead Redemption 2. Out of all games though, Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask might be one of my favorite endings to a game.
A game with the WORST ending: Mass Effect 3...
Best character customization?: I only played it for a short time but Black Desert Online had an insane character customization. For a single player though I have to agree with others Dragon Age Inquisition had some of the best char customization
-Hero and Companions-
Your favorite playable character: I play so many games with silent protags lol. Think Arthur Morgan from RDR2 might be my favorite in recent memory though.
The funniest playable character: Probably the created characters in the Saints Row games
Your favorite companion(s): All the Dragon quest XI companions and most of the companions in the other Dragon Quest games XD. In swtor: Blizz, T7, Torian, Shae, Lana, HK-51 and 55, and Zeeyo :D (Love me some good mandos!)
Companions you could live without: Always Skadge
-Relationships-
Favorite game friendship(s): Yangus from Dragon Quest 8, Dimitri from Fire Emblem: Three houses, and Regis from Witcher 3
Favorite companion banter: I love all the banters in the Nomad and Mako driving sections in Mass Effect
A relationship you loved but went bad: I really don’t know.
A relationship you weren’t sure of but loved: Don’t know this one either lol
A character you wish you COULD romance: I don’t know... I would say Jessica Albert from Dragon Quest 8 but in recent remake you can technically marry her.. Although you don’t get to do much romance stuff in game
A minor character you wish could be a companion: Darth Marr would be awesome to have as a comp.
-Fun-
Shoutout to a random NPC: FIRE EMBLEM GATE WATCHER!
A game you love watching playthroughs for and want to play: Even though I played them a long time ago, seeing the achievement hunter guys play through the Halo games doing LASO really has got me back into wanting to play the games.
Love watching playthroughs but won’t ever play: 7 Days to Die and horror games like Resident Evil. I’ll watch people play those but playing those kind of games would give me too much anxiety lol.
Online gaming or solo?: I generally play mostly solo games, but do enjoy playing swtor and other games with friends.
Why do you play video games?: I love to immerse myself within the awesome stories that the games tell. Bonus when they can get me really emotionally invested in the story and characters. I mainly play games as a way to relax from all my anxieties and cheer myself up when feeling down. I’m still kinda new getting back into this blog so I don’t wanna bother people with tagging. Sooo... I tag YOU, whoever would like to do this XD
#I did a meme thing!#I know I mostly post star wars and swtor based stuffs here#but I LOOOOOVE the Dragon Quest series so much.

Spotlight by Mila, @jughead-jones | Graphic by Katie, @betty-cooper
Anna | @writeradamanteve
Name: Anna
Age: 40
Location: New Jersey
Any other languages aside from English people can contact you in?: Filipino.
Favourite Riverdale characters and ships?: Aside from Betty and Jughead, I do love the awfulness of Cheryl Blossom and spitfire that is season 1 Veronica.
Cheryl Blossom is unapologetically terrible, and in real life, I would absolutely HATE her, but there’s something to be said about a woman who just goes all in. I get that hardness in her, and I like it that she admires others for it, too. That Toni brings out her soft side is a plus, but I would prefer that she stays true to her character outside of her romantic relationship.
Season 1 Veronica Lodge was a champion of women. I loved that about her. I may not have bought the whole “Betty is my best friend” assertion, but I did like that she was doing it to make amends for her past. S1!Veronica wanted to do better and she looked at Betty and thought Betty was a good person to hang out with to further that. Veronica as a person is methodical. Deliberate. And those are characteristics that can be both good and bad. I like it that Veronica can go both ways. I also mean that in a very gay way. No amount of her sleeping with Archie will convince me that her character can’t be bi. I can’t even say I hate her in season 2. She seemed a little lost there, but she was deciding between her family and her principles. For a while she thought that both could coexist, but when she realized in the end that it couldn’t, she broke away. That’s badass.
As for Betty and Jughead, I have at least 500K worth of words in fanfic that expresses the many ways I love them. But to be clear:
I love Betty for being so steadfast in her beliefs. She may have her insecurities when it comes to how she looks and what her mother may think of her, but when it comes injustice and friends endangering themselves for sex, she isn’t going to let anyone prevent her from doing the right thing. She is a go-getter, from saving Pop’s to saving her relationship (especially when Jughead was pulling away from her). She is a master at wielding household items — a skill, we learned, she got from Alice, who’s clearly handy with a lamp. She’s kinky, and she can be scary stone cold — forcing Cheryl to testify the truth with blackmail, watching Jughead punch Chic in the face without flinching, drowning a man to get him to confess to his sins (although ask me some other time about the morality and racial undertones of that, as that is an entirely different conversation). But she also deeply values her relationships. She cares for her loved ones so much, friend or family. That makes her so strong.
Let me tell you the many Jugheads I love: Soft!Jughead, Smughead Jones, Curious Jones, Snowflake!Jughead, ProudBF!Juggie, and even HaplessSerpent!Jughead. I like him best when he’s writing and when he’s making literary references in regular conversation. I love how sarcastic he could be and how his transition from loner weird kid in Riverdale High to popular serpent prince in Southside High tugs at my heartstrings and makes me mad, too. Like Betty, he cares fiercely for the people he loves. His need to belong becomes real to him, after he tried to deny it for so long. As much as we all have our issues with Season 2 Jughead, it added certain dimensions to Jughead that I love to write about in fanfic.
Favourite moments from S1 & S2?: I think I loved most of season 1, but the moments that stood out to me most were these: When Betty was dancing happily in her Cheerleading uniform, when Betty and Jughead were searching Jason’s room and got caught, when Jughead and Betty went to the Sisters of Quiet Mercy together, when Betty rushed to SSH to save Jughead only to find him laughing at the lunch tables with his newfound friends, when Veronica stood up for Betty at the tryouts, when Veronica showed Cheryl compassion, when the girls all banded together to make Chuck suffer the consequences of his misogyny (again, I have words for this, but mostly — why only him? His wasn’t the only name on that playbook), when Cheryl calls people names, when Jughead protected Betty from her vandalized locker, and of course, when Jughead climbed Betty’s bedroom window. While I can’t get enough of Jughead throwing Betty against the kitchen counter, I have to admit I still loved those other scenes a whole lot more. That said, I will still hope for what I mention in question #7.
Season 2 — ah, my goodness. I don’t need to explain how S2 broke my heart in so many good and bad ways. While there were some golden moments, I think most of us are in agreement that there were so many things that could’ve been done better. However, I STILL do have favorite scenes in this Hell Season: Jughead running the gauntlet was amazing, Betty working on Reggie’s car, the entire street race sequence, every time Betty uses a household object to save people (a shovel, a rolling pin, a poker), Jughead and Betty disposing of the car--from her house to the swamp, that entire episode of “The Wicked and the Divine”, Cheryl and Toni finding one another, and the hunger strike scenes.
What are your hopes for S3?:
Bughead summer sex montage.
MOAR Bughead Detective Agency.
A slammin’ Riverdale Parents Flashback episode.
Joaquin stays and Kevin gets better with love and BDE.
Kevin and Josie becoming step-siblings.
Reggie and Sweetpea being half-brothers.
Veronica being the Speakeasy Queen.
Cheryl stirring trouble (even if I know I’ll hate her for it).
Archie getting a clue.
Other fandoms you’re into?: My thing is that I don’t usually fan hard on more than one thing. My past fandoms were Harry Potter, Teen Titans, Anime (many of them at once), Cowboy Bebop, X-Files, Star Trek Voyager, and Firefly. At present, I love Star Wars (all of them — eh, except maybe for Episodes 1, 2, and 3), Wonder Woman, and all the Marvel movies.
What are some of your favourite movies/TV?: Classics: Galaxy Quest, Tropic Thunder, Labyrinth, The Princess Bride, Forest Gump, The Matrix, Constantine, Clueless, The Breakfast Club, Transformers: The Animated Movie, Snatch, Firefly, Veronica Mars, Supernatural (Seasons 1 - 5), X-Files;
Most Recent: Pacific Rim, Black Panther, Wonder Woman, Rogue One, Ready Player One, Anne with an E, Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Anthony Bourdaine’s old and new series.
Favourite books?: There are so many, fam, but here are the ones that first come to mind:
Harry Potter 1 - 6 (yeah, sorry, not a huge fan of the 7th)
Emma by Jane Austen
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
All of Louisa May Alcott’s books
All of Sharon Shinn
All of L.M. Montgomery
Anne Marston’s Rune Blade Trilogy
Barb and J.C. Hendee’s Noble Dead Saga

All of Zilpha Keatley Snyder books
All of Paula Danziger books

The Unlikely Disciple by Kevin Roose
The Monster of Florence by Douglas Preston and Mario Spezi
The Terror by Dan Simmons
Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams

Favourite bands/musicians?: I shall date myself, thanks:
Queen
Guns & Roses
Metallica
Nikki Minaj
Cardi B
Imagine Dragons
One Republic
The Killers
Lily Allen
Cake
Eminem
Amy Winehouse
U2
Sting
If you could live in any fictional world which one would you choose and why?: Harry Potter, no doubt. I would like to live in a world that relies on magic. I would like to go to a magical school like Hogwarts. I would love to fight in a resistance to overthrow an evil sorcerer. Plus, I would really, really love to meet Hermione.
Favourite food?:
Ramen (the real stuff, not the dried instant ones)
Banh Mi
Bun bo Hue
Sushi
Filipino Food — particularly Adobo
Tacos
Mangos and strawberries
Favourite season?: Summer.
Favourite plant?: This is an odd question to me as I don’t have a favorite plant. They are just there and sometimes they give me grief when I have to tend to the outside of my house because they’ve gotten unruly on some level (like — Fall, why do you have to discard your leaves all over my grounds?)
Favourite scent?: Baby’s breath, food, and freshly changed bed sheets.
Favourite colour?: Victorian pink.
Favourite animal?: Cats and Owls (I am definitely a witch by heart).
Are you a night owl, an early bird, or a vampire?: I sleep late and wake up early. I am an old person who can go on 5 hours of sleep.
Place you want to visit?: Portugal or Prague is next on my list.
Do you have pets? If you do, tell us a little about them: I have two pets. Pootie is a cat. He is a gray tuxedo. He loves me best, but he also hangs around my eldest child a lot. Every once in a while, he bothers my husband. Bob is a hermit crab. Bob bores the hell out of me and I am equal parts terrified that I will find him dead in his cage and tired that I am still taking care of him. His previous companions, Larry and Curly, have perished. When I found them dead, I screamed. Hermit crabs are creepy as fuck when they leave their shells, like I can’t stand them that way. I don’t know why I am stuck taking care of Bob, but he’s here, he is under my care, and God help me, he’s a stubborn bastard.
Tell us a little about yourself?:
For work, I’m a web producer/web developer, and I maintain about 20 sites for my company.
I used to work in publishing.
I went to law school and quit.
I eventually married my high school sweetheart and now we have 3 children.
I was always attracted to women, too, but growing up, I was too afraid to come out as bi. It still intimidates me, coming out to new people now. Most times, I just let them draw their own conclusions.
Fun or weird fact about you?: There’s nothing weird about me that you don’t already know. Fun fact: I kickbox in the nearby UFC gym, and one time, I was practicing with Tai pads with a dude who kicked me in the leg by accident — he just “grazed” me, really. I TRIED VERY HARD to pretend that I was alright. That night, my leg was swollen, and three months later, I saw that same dude fighting in the octagon on TV.
Asks for fanfic authors:
How long have you been writing?: 20 years.
Which is your favourite of the fics you’ve written?: That is impossible to answer. Truly. So I’m going to close my eyes over a list of my stories and where my finger lands, that’s my fave. It’s Drive.
Favourite fic/chapter/plot-point/character you’ve ever written?: This is even harder.
Polly’s character arc in Wicked. I really love how I fleshed her out in that story
The development of Kevin and Jughead’s friendship in Harvest to Home
Jughead’s relationship with Archie and Jellybean in Drive.
Betty’s story arc in Drive.
The twists and turns of Wicked.
The rich ambience of Harvest to Home.
Betty and Cheryl’s friendship in Harvest to Home.
The text conversation in Drive.
Sweet Pea’s background character in Drive.
Cheryl’s character in Wicked.
The car chase scene in Drive.
The hotel scene in Cowboy Jones.
The Peitho kitchen scene in Cowboy Jones.
Which was the hardest to write, and why?: Wicked was hard to write. I had set out to write this story with the twists and turns in mind, and those twists were interlaced. I had to set stuff up all throughout the beginning and middle so that the end would make sense. It was also harder because of Season 2. The background of those episodes in contrast with what I had in mind tended to make me nervous about reader expectations. Like when Hal was suddenly the Black Hood on Riverdale, it felt odd to not make him so terrible in Wicked.
One of the hardest chapters I had to write was a chapter written in Cheryl’s POV. Delving into her psyche was a difficult switch to turn on and at some point, I was doubting whether I can do it, but I did it and there it was. And I don’t regret it at all.
How do you come up with the ideas for you fic(s)? (examples: Do you draw inspiration from real life? Listen to music? Get inspired by TV/movies?) Do you have an process to your writing?: Inspiration is different every time.
For Harvest to Home, I wanted to write a fic about a very domestic Betty who made beautiful things. While I was writing that fic, I was deeply into the show Fixer Upper because we had just moved into our own new home. I was absolutely inspired by the designs I saw on TV and our need to decorate our home. I wanted Betty to be so good at it that she wrote a blog about home making. I had a lot of inspiration for that as well, since in the publishing company I used to work for, I worked with a lot of chefs and homemakers who published books.
For Drive, I was inspired by images of Mechanic!Betty at the start of Season 2. I think I may have seen a couple of fics inspired by the movie Baby Driver, where Jughead drove the getaway cars, and honestly, I got a little mad that Betty was never the driver. So I wrote the damn thing, and suddenly, Jughead was drag racing in Season 2. I wrote that fic with a lot of alternative music in the background. I usually started my chapters with the lyrics of those songs that inspired me.
For Wicked, I started writing it for Halloween and it basically grew too large of an idea to make it to Halloween of that year. I was also hesitant about how the fandom would receive a fic where Betty was a witch. Then there came that article about how Alice was possibly a Spellman. WELL THEN.
Cowboy Jones was absolutely inspired by the Camp Bughead prompts. I figured since I hadn’t been driven out of the fandom by torches and pitchforks because of Wicked, I’d try for some sci-fi, a genre I really love. I aimed to misbehave with Cowboy Jones, so I told myself that this was going to be my smuttiest work yet. I had also put out an X-Files inspired bughead short called The Truth is Here for that same prompt.
I answered the question about my writing process here and some more about character development here.
Idea that you always wanted to write?: Kitchen Confidential type story, where Jughead is an asshole chef who is determined to make his restaurant succeed. Betty becomes his sous chef and shows him a thing or two about cooking and about life.
Favourite character to write?: Betty and Jughead, no doubt.
Best comment/review you’ve ever received?: Well, there are so many commenters who have been so fantastic, but my favorite comments come from those who want to have a discussion with me, mostly because I like to reply to all commenters to express my gratitude and it’s easier to reply when I can pick up a conversation.
Best and worst parts of being a writer?: Best part is finishing a chapter and posting it. Worst part is getting flamed. I have been fortunate enough to have a welcoming group of readers here, but I’ve had my share of flames in other fandoms. I always try to dig deep for something constructive in them — there always is something that can be so useful to my writing, but man, those are TOUGH to handle sometimes.
Do you have any advice to offer?: Few things:
Don’t let fear rule your life. Embrace that fear and get to know it. Find out what makes it frightening, then overcome it.
Practice. That is the only thing that will make you better at anything.
Learn from failure. It’s a bitch of a teacher but it’s the best lesson you’ll ever have.
Find work that you love. It always pays.

What Dreams May Come by Lenore | Crimson Peake | Edith/Thomas | 5k | Ghosts are real, and there are things that tie them to this world. Sometimes it's because they want to linger, and sometimes it's because they are trapped. Sometimes ghosts need the help of the living before they can be truly free.
and prove your body wrong by paperclipbitch | The Defenders | Matt Murdock/Jessica Jones | 1k | Neither of them can read minds, but they both fake it for their day jobs.
these roads will take you into your own country by notbecauseofvictories | American Gods | Shadow/Laura, Gen | 5k | Here’s a joke for you: a Muslim, a zombie, and a leprechaun walk into a bar in Misery, Indiana. No one stares, because no one in the puckered, shitty asshole of Misery, Indiana gives a fuck. The Colts are playing.Fucking new gods,” the leprechaun mutters, hunching his shoulders almost up to his ears. “Gridiron and Pepsi commercials.”
Small Step For Man by Toft [archived by yuletide_archivist] | Greek Myth | Artemis/Apollo | 4k | "It's all right, sister," Apollo whispers, and his arm is warm around her shoulder. She forgets, he is her twin, he is her other half; he knows her almost as well as she knows herself. "We're still the same."
learning curve by Yuu_chi | Detroit | Hank/Connor | 15k | “While sexual activity is not my default purpose, I do possess the capability,” Connor says without so much as batting an eye, unaware that he’s completely shattered Hank’s world view in one single sentence.
machine learning by kriegersan | Detroit | Hank/Connor | 31k | “This kinda shit doesn’t go away overnight. It’s only been a few months, Connor. We’re only just starting to know what this is gonna look like.” Lt. Anderson throws back his beer.“You think I don’t know that?” He sounds defensive. He tempers his voice. “I’m simply processing.”
eighteen wheels on an uphill climb by blackeyedblonde | Detroit | Hank/Connor | 73k | Hank is going to die. He’s going to die right here in Kentucky, 53 years old, halfway to broke, and tragically sober. Survived only by a nine-year-old St. Bernard and the 31-year-old twink who delivered the fatal blow.
Fuck pride (pride only hurts, it never helps) by ImogenGotDrunk | Detroit | Nines/Gavin | 40k | What Gavin cannot deal with is Connor’s replica; two inches taller, blue-eyed, and with a mouth that Gavin doesn’t know whether to punch or take between his teeth. The RK900 model has been assigned as his partner for the foreseeable future.
linguistics, semantics by pseudoanalytics | DBH | Hankcon | 49k | "So, what? Cyberlife gave you a preference for ugly, old, washed-up bastards?" Connor intentionally allows himself to appear unamused. "Absolutely not." He waits for Hank to look at him again before delivering his punchline. "I believe I developed that for myself."
Skin Deep by bughnrahk | DBH | Hankcon | 50k | Hank is 53 years old. He's never had a soul mark, doesn't have a soul mate. And he's fine with that. He cheated the system once and it cost him everything he had. Never again. When August 2038 rolls around and the number '313 248 317 - 51' appears on his arm in perfect Cyberlife Sans font, exactly where a soul mark should be, Hank wants nothing to do with it.
Watch Me, Watch You by elefseus (oscillos) | DBH | Hank/Connor | 82k | WIP | "How do you go about living when everything you've ever known changes? Can you?"
the most formidable lies by fshep | DBH | Connor/Gavin | 15k | WIP | Gavin is given an ultimatum: agree to give his mother’s coworker’s son a chance, or introduce his family to his new boyfriend, Connor, who isn’t his boyfriend at all.
February
and we'll figure it out by consumptive_sphinx | Temeraire | Lawrence/Tharkay | 1.5k | Everyone is born with their soulmate's name written on their skin, somewhere. Laurence has two names. Neither of them are in a script he can read.
Propriety and Fate by esama | Temeraire | Lawrence/Tharkay | 3.5k | It isn't as if one can go and talk about such things
Watercast by Fishwrites | Voltron | Keith/Lance | 205k WIP, Chapter 15 | Shiro has been a Galra prisoner for over a year; with his flight feathers clipped and unable to fly. Desperate to escape, he jumps overboard while being transported to the capitol on a Galran ship. Lance is a merman who saves him from drowning. Keith thinks Shiro is about to become mermaid dinner. Hunk just wants Lance to stop going to the surface all the time, dammit!
Afterlife by jaegermighty | Haunting of Hill House | Gen, Luke-centric | 6k | Leigh and Steve name their daughter Eleanore, with an 'e' on the end which is more old-fashioned, they say. Eleanore Olivia Crain. Lots of dead people in that name; Luke's not a fan. Not that anyone asked his opinion.
in memoriam by oxymoronic | Bartimaeus | Gen | 1.5k | Kitty Jones has but a little strength left in her body, and she has decided on this lazy summer's night to spend it on the question which has plagued her for half a century.
March
Second Chances by rootbeer | Teen Wolf | Sterek | 2k | "A lot of times the ‘markings’ were common, simple things you said to strangers all the time. 'Excuse me'; 'thank you'; 'hello'. Some got extremely romantic things like 'it’s you isn’t it? I’ve been waiting for you' or 'Wow you’re really pretty'. And they were always the first words their soulmate would ever say to them.Of course, having 'You are the fucking worst kind of person in the world' tattooed down your side, didn’t bode well.
have your cake and eat it too by keskasi | Naruto | Naruto/Sasuke | 7k | “What’s it like to give a blowjob?” Naruto asks.
Timing it Right by DragonBandit | The Bright Sessions | Mark/Damien | 14k | Damien's gold rises at Whitney. Mark tries to make things right.

Bringing Things Together by blacktofade | Buzzfeed Unsolved | 7k | “Look,” Shane says over the phone. “Mistakes were made.”
Pride by astolat | Game of Thrones | Jaime/Cersei/Brienne | 22k Jaime didn’t understand why Cersei suddenly insisted on trimming his hair and shaving his beard, but he also didn’t care to fight her on it, even though he’d just as soon have kept the beard: it was bitterly cold in the small tower room with its arrow-slits. At night, even curled together under the two blankets they’d been allotted, it took the better part of an hour before their bodies could warm the bed enough to sleep.
L'aura è tua messaggera by Rosyredlipstick | PJO | Nico/Will | 9k | Or, how the Stoll Brothers accidentally got Nico di Angelo and Will Solace together.
June
Competition by astolat | GoT | Jaime/Brienne | 11k | Almost the instant Brienne was out of earshot, Bronn turned to Podrick, jerked his head towards Jaime and asked, “Has he fucked her yet?”
Skin and Scales by Ernmark (M_Moonshade) | The Penumbra Podcast | Arum/Rilla/Damien | 17k | The man glares, and this time, Damien is certain it isn’t a trick of the light: those eyes are violet as amethyst. He wears disdain like a second skin–- or, perhaps, like the scales that he is missing.“Lord Arum?”
I will become yours and you will become mine by spiderwebsitar | DBH | Reed900 | 24k | After an argument with his new partner, Gavin Reed wakes up five years in the future married to an android who won’t stop making fucking waffles.

@themegalosaurus tagged me in an About Me meme! I only just saw, and then proceeded to have small crisis about who I even am. You know, the usual.
Fictional character I relate to the most:
Probably Velanna from Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening. She has a lot of pent up anger which sometimes blinds her, and very focused on what she thinks is right or wrong, insistent to a point that’s sometimes an issue, and definitely blinded by her strong emotions. On the other hand, she’s idealistic and it makes her preserve, her culture and her people’s future are very important to her (hi, I’m Jewish and mad a lot), and she would do absolutely everything for those she loves, even though that’s just a very small number of people. (Plus, she’s very much coded as autistic, has problems understanding sarcasm and relating to other people, especially when she was younger, and as autistic person with very low empathy, that’s a mood.)
Book you can read over and over without getting tired of it:
Terry Pratchett’s Thud! definitely, or, well, any other Terry Pratchett novel. My favourite book series are The Edge Chronicles, by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell. They’re children’s fantasy books, but they’re essentially to me what Harry Potter was to a lot of other people growing up. I periodically re-read The Winter Knights, which is my favourite of the series (except that my favourite character is from the Rook trilogy, but Oh Well).
What’s your favourite comfort show/movie:
Leverage, definitely. Whenever I feel bad, I just queue up random episodes and watch them until I feel better, and so far, it has worked every single time. (On occasion, I rewatch random s1 and s2 episodes of Supernatural - it’s more a nostalgia thing, but it depends on why I need comfort.) Also Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, provided I skip certain episodes.
Which fictional character are you most defensive over:
Sam, as should be evident, and pretty much... every female character in anything ever. Some people are Wrong About Talia Winters from Babylon 5 and her s2 arc, so I gotta fight them, and I feel also rather defensive of Loghain in Dragon Age, Xanth from the Edge Chronicles, and Ash Tyler from Star Trek: Discovery.
Show you fell out of love with:
Uh, Teen Wolf, probably? I was on a field trip when s3 was airing, missed several episodes, found out my fave died during those, and then I just stopped caring.
Show you’re most excited for:
The new season of Shadowhunters is going to start airing on the 20th, and I really need my boy Simon to be okay! That’s all I want. (Also, Anna Hopkins is going to play Lilith, and I’m extremely into her.) Other than that, I’m slowly making my way through season 2 of Jessica Jones, which I’m enjoying a lot, and I’m excited for the new seasons of Grace and Frankie and Star Trek: Discovery.
What’s your aesthetic:
I’m gay and trans, so I just really love graphic shirts and flannel with cargo pants and a leather jacket. I've been trying for years to look both queer and unapproachable, but random strangers still strike up conversations with me on public transport at least twice a week, so I don’t know what the fuck I’m doing wrong?
Favourite fanfic tropes:
Enemies to Friends to Lovers is just... so good. It’s so good. (They don’t have to be enemies, but just people that are pretty antagonistic towards each other at the beginning and then grow to know each other and like each other and then fall in love. FUCK YES.) Related to that, the mutual, seemingly unrequited pining? YES.
On the other hand, I also love the very slow change from best friends to lovers. People that already know each other, have been through a lot together, whose feelings change gradually, slowly, and their relationship just changes into something different. Love it.
And all of these can be perfectly tied together by pretending to be dating/married for a case/a family gathering/insert other flimsy excuse. Especially when it’s a Mistaken For A Couple and they just go along with it and it grows and they’re in way over their head?? Yes.
(Specific to Supernatural, though, I love powers!Sam and Boy King!Sam both a whole lot. Fuck me up. Also, is asphyxiation a trope or does that just fall under Kinks We Wish Nate Would Stop Bringing Up?)
Aaaand with that, I am tagging:
@eruthiawenluin, @fan-male, and @julia-sets

My Top 25 Movies of 2019.
It is indeed time… or at least, as is tradition, it is indeed now overdue for me to dust off the cobwebs from my Tumblr account and post my Top 25 movies of the year.
This time for 2019.
Years 2008 through to present are available in the archive. Frequent visitors know that I’ll throw out a few special mentions to all the films that I wish I could’ve included but couldn’t make them fit yet believe they deserve a shout out regardless and then I get stuck in to what I think are the 25 best films of the year.
As always, films listed are based on their UK release date whether that’s in the cinema or on DVD, VOD etc.
And no, despite several attempts, repeated proclamations on social media AND owning the bloody thing outright for the last 6 months, I still never got round to seeing Ash is The Purest White in time for my self-imposed deadline for this so if you’re here to see that lauded, I will dash your expectations now.
Anyway, without further ado, here’s the ‘also-rans’ and ‘near-misses’ separated per genre that very nearly made the final list:
In terms of comedies, I very much enjoyed The Breaker Upperers, The Favourite, Always Be My Maybe, Mega Time Squad, Good Boys, Brittany Runs a Marathon and – as ultimately disappointing as it turned out to be in comparison to the original – yes, Zombieland: Double Tap.
Dramas I really liked this year were The 12th Man, The Old Man And The Gun, The Man Who Killed Hitler and then Bigfoot, White Boy Rick, Stan & Ollie, Deadwood: The Movie, The Sister Brothers, the first two thirds of Feedback, Hotel Mumbai, The Mule, Shadow, Thunder Road, The Clovehitch Killer, The Nightingale, Destroyer, Vice and, as uncomfortable as it made me, Ray and Liz.
Documentaries I rated highly in 2019 included Leaving Neverland, Free Solo, The Inventor: Out For Blood In Silicon Valley, Divide & Conquer: Roger Ailes and The Amazing Jonathan Documentary.
In terms of horror movies, rather controversially I seem to stand alone in saying I rather liked both Velvet Buzzsaw and The Dead Don’t Die. I also thoroughly enjoyed One Cut of the Dead, Happy Death Day 2 U and In Fabric, the last of which VERY nearly made the final Top 25 cut.
Action movies I was a fan of this year were both Triple Frontier and Triple Threat, The Quake (or The Wave 2: The Quake as it is inexplicably retitled in some countries), We Die Young which features a wordless and stellar Van Damme performance, Furie and Stuber.
On the blockbuster ‘stage’, I fully embraced the absolute utter insanity (or stupidity?) of The Wandering Earth, really liked Shazam! As well as Spiderman: Far From Home and Terminator: Dark Fate. Somewhat controversially, I also had a lot of fun with Jumanji: The Next Level, 6 Underground and Joker (a straight-up masterpiece that last movie most certainly is not!).
Finally, in terms of animation that I liked in 2019 I’d pay mention to How To Train Your Dragon 3, The Lego Movie 2 and Toy Story 4 – the last two being very likeable but totally unnecessary. And of course, Klaus which was a lovely, moving, visual joy that me and my family will return to a lot over the years.
Now… onto that Top 25:
25. BOOKSMART
I really loved this first time I saw it earlier this year. I found it very funny and thought the performances were delightful by the two main leads. I had issues with the clusterfuck that is the film's third act but not enough that I didn't hold a place for it in my Top 10 of the year for pretty much the last four months or so. Then I revisited it again recently and I’ve still got a huge amount of affection for it and there is still a large amount of it that makes me laugh out loud - but that third act REALLY rubs me the wrong way.
Asides from the clunky plot developments that exist purely to give the film conflict and some sort of narrative 'propulsion' it doesn't necessarily need AND on top of the fact that Billie Lourd's entire thing is embarrassing and awful (are we allowed to kind of lean in together and whisper yet that she can't act very well?), what really smarts is for a film that is meant to be this 'progressive' and female-centred, it leans in on the laziest and most horrible of high school comedy tropes - the horny teacher who beds the student! And like cliche dictates it is always a female teacher and male student because even a film as allegedly "progressive" as this is self-aware enough to know that if the sexes were reversed they couldn't / wouldn't get away with it.
In an age of #MeToo and #TimesUp the idea that a female filmmaker would go with this iffy fuckin cliche in her debut movie and have no problem at all leaves a horrible taste over the back end of an otherwise pretty great little film... But yeah, definitely still check out BOOKSMART. Its progressive, millennial bullshit stance is complete piffle. But its comedic set-pieces are a lot of fun.
24. IT: CHAPTER TWO
I don’t understand anyone who's coming away from IT CHAPTER 2 complaining there's a lack of scares. There's not a lack of scares at all. The problem is there scattered across a running time that is not structured well enough to accentuate them. There were some moments where I very nearly jumped out of my seat and left because of their effectiveness - the pay-off to Bev returning home as teased in the trailer? Fuuuuuuck THAT!
I think it is fair to criticise its flabbiness though… How the hell its director can talk about his intentions for a four hour cut of this pushed up alongside a three hour cut of the first chapter as some sort of hope for the future feels insane - FOUR hours? This thing is ten minutes shy of three and it feels excessive!
The lack of discipline in the editing bay is quite possibly the reward that comes from delivering a $700.4 million return on a $35 million budget the first time round. That lack of discipline doesn't make for a film as focused as it needs to be... Once you realise an hour in that the story structure is one in which each character is split off to revisit their past and then each character is then going to be given a 'teachable moment', you realise that you've essentially got to watch the same plot point be repeated SIX times round each time. And from a narrative perspective that's both annoying and exhausting, frankly.
Hand on heart though, it's a minor quibble overall because what is there is effective as hell and very entertaining. Think of it cinematically as too big a portion of a great frickin meal... It's a hypocritical complaint also because ultimately there is so much joy in watching these actors go at playing these characters (Bill Hader is an absolute marvel in this and Jessica Chastain lives up to the 'dream casting' suggestion the minute Sophia Ellis turned up in the first one!)
It may well be overlong by a good thirty minutes but it is still an incredibly scary, funny ride... just with a denouement that, once again, shows how hard it is to deliver the climactic goods when Stephen King has given you such utter excrement to work with.
23. THE GANGSTER, THE COP, THE DEVIL
I watched this and flat-out loved it - yet another reminder that you can spin the dial and pick a genre, any genre, and the reality is that South Korea are delivering the best efforts in it nowadays. This is a big, broad, bombastic slice of action pulp that has its cake as a thriller/procedural and eats it as a blockbustery burst of car chases and violent dust-ups.
The remake rights for this are with Stallone and that's a scary prospect really coz if there's one thing problematic about that guy is that he's not ~great~ with playing "evenly" (the stories that came off the CREED II production are terrifying!).
22. AT THE HEART OF GOLD
I watched this with my wife and the both of us just kept shooting aghast and pained looks at one another the longer it went on.
Forensic documentary studies like this are a big interest to me but this was a gruelling yet kind of inspiring watch because it did the right thing in putting the victims front and centre from the get go and throughout.
Child abuse is an abhorrent thing. Doubly so on a scale like this. BUT when you're watching the revelations that it was so commonly known to be going on and covered up to the extent and at the level it was? That is just... there's just no words!
Fantastic little documentary though. If you think you know the full facts on this, you don't! And if the last 4 years are any indication, our generation have found our own Errol Morris coz Erin Lee Carr is responsible for 4 of the best documentaries in that time with this, I LOVE YOU NOW DIE, THOUGHT CRIMES and MOMMY DEAD & DEAREST.
21. ABDUCTED IN PLAIN SIGHT
I find that once in a while there's a true crime documentary so flat-out, jaw-droppingly fuckin... out there, that most of its enjoyment isn't in how utterly astounding it is but mostly the fun you have in telling people the details of it and watching them incredulously go "Fuck the fuck off! This didn't happen? Surely not!"
I saw this in early January when no one was talking a single word about it here in the UK and I spent roughly three months banging on and on about it to anyone and everyone and, sure enough, everyone looked at me like I was mad and kept saying "Fuck the fuck off! This isn’t a real thing, surely??” Then it landed on Netflix and… everyone went bonkers!
It is a tight 90 minute uncomfortable, grim, totally incredulous jaw-dropper detailing what are two of the STUPIDEST parents and the most horribly manipulative paedophile you could imagine. You've GOT to check this out because without this documentary no one would EVER believe the story of… ** SPOILERS here on out ** ... the most horribly manipulative paedophile you could imagine, who moves his family into the house next to a husband and wife with three daughters, befriends them, tricks the dad into giving him handjobs, seduces the mum into heavy-petting sessions - all with the intent of lowering their defences so he can get access to their youngest 11 year old daughter... who he abducts, manipulates by pretending to be an alien into believing there's an alien invasion that can only be prevented by her having his baby and sneaks across to Mexico once she's 12 so he can marry her. Then he gets arrested by the FBI, brought back to America, uses his previous intimate dalliances with BOTH parents to blackmail them into dropping the charges, re-seduces the mother into a long-term sexual relationship, reabducts the young daughter, hides her in a boarding school, poses as a CIA agent and...
... and... and... not one single element of this is UNTRUE! What the FUCK, right?!?
20. MIDSOMMAR
There's issues to be had with this in the sense that at two and a half hours it is needlessly self-indulgent and from a storytelling point of view it suffers like many from that flaw of walking in the wake of THE WICKER MAN's story beats without finding much in the way of variation.
However, it is exceptionally well directed and the building of tension and concern (despite knowing exactly where it will inevitably go) is impressive. It basks in its weirdness and then seemingly delights in getting weirder... You can say you've heard this story before but you won't have SEEN it told with imagery quite like this. The whole shebang wouldn't work half as effectively if not for the performances and they really are great here. Florence Pugh is quite exceptional. She joins Toni Collette in what will clearly be Ari Aster's roster of "Tremendous Performances That Deserve Awards But Won't Get Them".
By the film's end you come to realise the film is leaning into THE WICKER MEN comparisons purposefully - to show us what that movie would look like today, in Trump's America: Obnoxious Americans pissing up against and fucking around with longstanding tradition and history.
19. Us
Ignore all of the bullshit 33,000+ deep dive 'think pieces' spewed out across the internet about this and just judge it for what it is: a great horror thrill-ride with some terrific jump scares etc. but it's not without its flaws. For one, it's too strong a film to get landed with that big and lazy an info-dump conclusion... especially one that kind of clunks against what's gone before - but then, as much as we're clearly not meant to call Jordan Peele out on anything it seems, he IS a vastly superior director then he is a writer if this effort is anything to go by.
Was it really, really requiring of those penetrative essays though on what it "really" means or what Peele's hidden intent was? Could it not just be that the guy made a great horror film with all the very clear subtext of a Romero or Carpenter classic, and there's just nothing more to it than that? Because that's how I’m taking it. Because if I don't and I do actually have to wade through all this internet word clunge about how US is "really" about "the effects of classism and marginalisation" or how the antagonists are "effigies of situational classism", I'd write the film off as a failure of achieving its intent.
To dress it up as more than a relentless, scary cat-and-mouse shocker is like trying to put a monocle on a pig and call it a professor.
18. WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOUR
I went into this as a British person completely unfamiliar with Fred Rogers or any of his past work / impact on America and came away completely reverential to the man and what he stood for and achieved across generations. So much so that this documentary completely changed my outlook on a lot of things. It certainly changed the approach I take in how I communicate with my own children now.
It’s a heartwarming, inspirational ode to a clearly great man and I urge everyone to watch it and allow Mr Rogers to give your jaded perspective on life a reinvigorating kick in the butt.
17. APOLLO 11
This really is magnificent. The 70mm archival footage makes the whole thing make it look like you're watching a big studio blockbuster... and not actual real never-before-seen footage from decades ago.
There's moments within this that are just astounding and intoxicating, making you become completely engulfed in something even though you are well versed in what the outcomes are.
16. LONG SHOT
This was the surprise delight of the year. It was very lovely, fun and funny with a great cast being just thoroughly delightful. Charlize Theron is very rarely utilised in comedy (ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT Season 3 was so long ago) which is a shame coz she's really gifted, as is proven here - the scene where she does hostage negotiation on molly is one of the funniest scenes of the year!
Seth Rogen makes the sort of stuff that is just game-set-match for my particular sensibilities (40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN to SUPERBAD to KNOCKED UP to PINEAPPLE EXPRESS to OBSERVE & REPORT is in itself an all-timer run that puts him up there with Robin Williams, Eddie Murphy and Albert Brooks) and this is a further reflection of that.
They should never have changed the title to something this generic. And it could comfortably lose 15 minutes here or there. But they're minor niggles for a romcom that we'll still be holding in high regard for years to come. And June Diane Raphael SHOULD get awards for the graft she puts in here. She won’t because films like this never get respect like that, but she totally should.
15. JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3 - PARABELLUM
I flat out loved this (though I still maintain that I don’t even think the star and the director themselves have referred to the film by its 'full name') and I would be more than happy to see an entry to this franchise every two years if they're of this calibre.
CHAPTER 2 had me worried because it looked like there was a limit to just how much 'throwing people down to the ground and shooting them in the head with CGI gunfire and blood added in on top' you could push into a film before it felt tiresome but this completely circumnavigates all worry around that by dialling up the 'quirk' factor which has always been this franchise's most bizarro and interesting element.
And the introduction of Halle Berry to 'the floor' led to a stand-out set-piece that was nothing short of astounding!
I WOULD however have preferred it if this film had adopted a bit of the ol' VH1 Pop-Up Video Show (remember THAT??) approach and just stuck a bubble up during the motorbike sequence that said "We stole this wholesale from THE VILLAINESS because we know it’s unlikely you saw that movie!")
14. READY OR NOT
I offer up the heartiest of recommendations for this - an absolutely first class horror comedy that finds a delightfully irreverent spin on the cat-and-mouse / slasher movie. It really is the ‘little movie that could’ of 2019 that offers up way, way, way more than its marketing and log-line suggest. It’s very funny and has some truly effective jump-scares and, best of all, it has a great ensemble cast doing great work. Double-bill it with KNIVES OUT and thank me later!
13. ARCTIC
This really worked as an effective, throw-you-into-the-mix survival thriller. Mads Mikkelsen is terrific and he really sells the hell out of it.
You don't know just how successfully it has burrowed under your skin and pulled you along on the ride until the final five minutes when you're screaming "NO!" at the screen.
12. AD ASTRA
I still can’t believe this flopped. I genuinely can’t. It's fair to say it doesn't quite stick its landing in making the end of the journey as narratively thrilling as what it took to get there but it doesn't matter - the journey itself is a sumptuous, thrilling and truly exquisite ride taking an easy "APOCALYPSE NOW in space" label and delivering something so, so much more.
For anyone who grew up with any "sins of the father" issues this will act as a ten ton weight dropped onto their chest.
... It also has space pirates and space monkeys!
11. MARRIAGE STORY
The plaudits are all well-earned and I’m saying this as someone who's connected with very little of Baumbach's work other than THE SQUID & THE WHALE.
It's a genuinely enthralling watch due to a fantastic group of actors being set loose to do tremendous work; Adam Driver is superb and Scarlett Johansson raises her game considerably to go toe-to-toe with him but Laura Dern, Ray Liotta and Alan Alda deliver a trio of masterclasses under one roof.
(If there's ANY justice whatsoever in awards season Alda will split everything Best Supporting Actor related with Joe Pesci… He won’t, because there is no justice when it comes to the vast majority of awards season but that is not to say he doesn’t deserve it!)
This is a delicately crafted piece - where your favoured side in a fight you feel you really shouldn't be privy to, is expertly switched around - that comes from a very obvious place of truth.
10. STAND-OFF AT SPARROW CREEK
I really, really liked this. I can see it's a film I'll go back to quite a few times over the years and see if I can spot the 'turn' because, first time round if I’m honest, I very much did not see the reveal coming.
It's a great little film. The performances are terrific (James Badge Dale is the best actor of our generation, frankly) and Henry Dunham has delivered a hell of an interesting film - all long shots into dark corners of a big dank space, scenes shot with natural torchlight and headlight beams. It's never not interesting to look at.
It's essentially RESERVOIR DOGS re-spun so the diamonds are replaced with missing fire arms and the back alley warehouse in LA is replaced with a militia compound in backwoods America.
9. KNIVES OUT
I found this to be a tremendous amount of fun; the somewhat obvious result that is birthed from a great writer/director putting a terrific script in front of an exceptional cast, designing a fabulous set for them to let loose inside of and then stepping out of their way for quality to reign.
There's a barely tolerable Edgar Wright version of this where the filmmaking is of course "the star", the editing is distracting and the music is purposefully kitschy.
This very much isn't that.
It's decidedly UNshowy and by being so comfortable in its own skin, emulating a classic style of storytelling not so much told anymore, it really stands out as an excellent piece of original cinema.
8. DOLEMITE IS MY NAME
I urge you all to completely buy the hype: DOLEMITE IS MY NAME is every bit as fantastic as everyone is saying and Eddie Murphy is like awards-worthy great in it.
You don't have to have seen DOLEMITE to have fun with this but having done so certainly accentuates it.
It's very funny, surprisingly moving and is a genuinely great ode to the importance of following your passions and not letting anyone stifle your creative aspirations... Hell, if this thing existed 25 years ago I myself would be as prolific as Lee fuckin Childs by now.
Da'Vine Joy Randolph gives THE best supporting actress performance of the year. From straight-up out of nowhere.
Genuinely can't wait to watch this a few more times down the road.
7. AVENGERS: ENDGAME
I think there's two ways of looking at AVENGERS: ENDGAME - as a film in its own right with an atypical start, middle, end, etc. AND as a piece of cinematic event-level entertainment.
In the case of the former, it is pretty damn great though not entirely without its flaws:
Give the narrative set up and logical lay out a single seconds thought and this entire thing crumbles to the ground. On top of that, it takes a while to bed down and get going and its tonal scattershot approach across the first forty-odd minutes is a little jarring. Quite literally you're coming out of that first hour with your head-spinning from laughing and then getting whipped into sombre, dour moments... slapped with narrative leaps and 'we're putting the team back together' beats.
Then the 'points of purpose' settle in and quite frankly we're off to the fucking races, man. Captain Marvel is a repeated, annoying goddamn useless 'deus ex machina' and the entire use of Paltrow/'Rescue' is just irritating. BUT everything 45+ minutes is so, so, so, so flipping ACE that shit like that can't even destabilise it.
There's critics out there deriding this as 'Fan Service: The Movie' and, you know what, damn fucking straight it is and there's nothing wrong with that.
(Although it could be argued that a clunky 'let's put all the women together in one shot' moment that lands with a thud is 'fan service' taken too far and not pitched within proceedings well enough for it to be anything other than cloying.)
The entire middle hour of these three hours is a play within a play; only the play its playing in just happens to be TWENTY-TWO OTHER MOVIES!
They could have phoned this in haaaaaard by this point and it is so, so, so commendable that they didn't. Hell, a lot of the films problems lie in the fact that they tried as hard as they did to really do doing something you wouldn't be expecting with this!
As an 'event', there will never be anything like this again in my lifetime, I don’t think. I knew this walking out of it. There'll be more JUSTICE LEAGUE type failed rip-offs. Marvel themselves will try and replicate it with the law of diminishing returns playing into effect. But there will NEVER be something so accomplished from something so long-form on such a grand stage as this again as far as I’m concerned.
6. CRAWL
I’ve went back for multiple viewings of this and absolutely LOVED it even more each time.
It's a lean, bullet-fast, brutal B-movie creature feature that does not fuck around: There is a complete lack of JAWS like foreboding, skulking around... This is straight-up, in your face, nasty, fast carnage. Anyone going in expecting a knowing, winking PIRANHA 3D / SNAKES ON A PLANE type deal is in for a hard slap.
It's pitch perfect entertainment in the sense that it grabs you and then just keeps turning the screws ("Oh, she's battling an alligator in a flooded crawlspace!" "Aww, man! It's a full on storm and there's TWO alligators now!" "Holy Fuckballs - There's MANY alligators and a hurricane now??").
The last 25 minutes alone are an all-out, relentless assault upon your ability to breathe steadily.
This is the best B-movie of 2019!
5. DRAGGED ACROSS CONCRETE
My wife and I are big fans of S. Craig Zahler's BONE TOMAHAWK and BRAWL IN CELL BLOCK 99 (two of the best films of the last decade) even though it's becoming more and more apparent he's quite far from our own political stance.
This, Zahler's latest effort, drops the latent suggestion and presents its right-wing, racist immoral world view with no restraint or apology. And regardless of your political stance, if you're there for the story and the filmmaking craftsmanship you'll find this to be tremendous stuff.
It's like a cut-price, gutter level version of Michael Mann's HEAT; a tale of cop and criminal convergence, told at a thoroughly unhurried and unconcerned pace... Only Zahler would think to interrupt his narrative to propose a short story within the story (about a mother returning from maternity leave) that's only there so that he can hurt you with it.
Mel Gibson's presence here laid up against the subject matter is the very definition of provocative and contentious but there's no getting around the fact that he is as tremendous an actor as he is an awful, awful human being. And by all counts he's REALLY very awful.
Gibson is every shade of ace in this and he's ably supported by Vaughn, who's rightly leaning away from the comedic persona he's broken too badly.
This is a languid, unapologetically nasty film but it's also an excellent one. It's so not for everyone but if you've liked BONE TOMAHAWK and BRAWL IN CELL BLOCK 99 then this is a must. In fact, it's both easily Zahler's best film and one of the best films of the year.
4. MISSING LINK
I think this really is an absolute jewel and I can't understand why more folk aren't screaming about it. It's very funny and visually wondrousness (that boat-in-the-storm INCEPTION homage action sequence is fabulous). The magnitude of talent that would have gone into making this via stop motion... knowing that it takes one week to complete one to two minutes of useable footage!
The creases in the texture of each characters clothing as they move too? WOW! I’ve always adored Laika's output but this was the first for me where the sheer care and attention to detail really shone!
For one, it's easily one of the funniest movies of the year. For another, it looks totally gorgeous. And best of all, it gives kids their very own GUNGA DIN / RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK cinematic adventure type experience.
3. FORD VS. FERRARI (aka LE MANS ’66)
I’m so glad in the same very year where ‘Film Twitter’ nearly blew itself up over the ‘Marvel / Tentpole Cinema / Scorsese / No original studio films anymore’ debate, I got to experience something as majestic and very nearly perfect as FORD VS FERRARI (aka LE MANS '66).
It's got such a tremendous old fashioned style to it that I hope they do what they did with LOGAN and give us a black and white edition and we have 60s era style movie credits to open and close it. It's that kind of movie.
Yet at the same time it manages to display all the high end technical filmmaking majesty backed up by wall-to-wall terrific performances (only Josh Lucas lets the side down with his inability to deliver anything above unsubtle, cartoonish panto villainy).
It's a gorgeous, kinetic, enthralling and by the end a surprisingly tender and moving piece of cinema. I completely adored it.
2. ONCE UPON A TIME IN… HOLLYWOOD
I fell in love hard with Tarantino's ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD straight-out-the-gate and fell harder with repeated viewings. It's a beautifully shambolic, meandering 'day in the life' sort of deal that plays out as a dry, knowing comedy with a sideline in impending, escalating dread... before becoming, well, something else entirely that's so shocking and out of left field that it feels so courageous because of how swiftly it will divide a viewer.
What's so monumentally lush about it is that it is made by a cinematic craftsman who is essentially writing a love letter to everything he adores/adored about a very specific time in a very specific place within the industry that made him. It is framed, lit and shot with aplomb but on top of that every single thing inside of the frame is chockfull of things that are background noise to somebody and yet incredibly meaningful, funny and knowing to true TV and cinema fans.
If there's any complaint to be made about this movie it's that Tarantino's continued insistence on shoe-horning Zoe Bell into his films is absolutely hurting his product: The woman can't act, can't judge the tone of a scene, is flat-out incapable of putting in a performance consistent with what is going on around with other actors and she is routinely a very hard, very annoying distraction that draws you straight out of the film.
You could argue that it is a listless movie because, in the conventional sense people expect of a narrative, does anything truly happen in the atypical Act 1, Act 2 and Act 3 type of way. But I'd counter-argue that all the enjoyment is in just spending time watching these characters move around and interact with one another.
Knowing the history of Sharon Tate and what happened to her at the hands of The Manson Family fills the entire proceedings with a sense of nausea-inducing nervousness about what we're going to see and to what degree. It's like a pressure valve sat in the background, slowly filling and expanding and just waiting to explode. That it eventually does but in the manner it does, is... well it's audacious... and yet questionable... and still entertaining as hell.
1. THE IRISHMAN
Without a hint of exaggeration, at least once a day every day since I first saw this film I’ve found myself thinking back to both DeNiro's "phone call" scene of which no words would convey its brilliance and Pacino's final scene and the sound he makes in it. The former is genuinely just one of the most haunting, astoundingly natural pieces of acting you'll see from a truly great actor you'd kind of forgot was capable of going to places like this.
This really is a straight-out-the-gate, instant, flawless, completely majestic work of art. It is a master craftsman signing off on a genre he revolutionised in much the same way Clint Eastwood closed down his connection to the western with UNFORGIVEN.
It is three and a half hours long and it doesn't feel remotely close to that... and that's saying something considering most of the film's real awesomeness lies in scenes that are allowed to breathe and just sit or in points being driven home through the repetition in the mundanity of these characters' lives. Because that's the other thing that's really terrific about it - it's not a re-tread of GOODFELLAS or CASINO; there's nothing remotely glamorous about this 'life' - Scorsese presents it as this 'working class stiff' gig where being the right-hand man to some of the most powerful crime figures and industry heads of the 50s, 60s, 70s, etc is really not all that higher up past being a truck driver in the same era.
The much-talked about de-ageing stuff on the actors is a little jarring at first (the first scene of DeNiro in his late 20s or something makes you squelch in your seat a little and think "Fuck, this is going to be bad isn't it?") but it settles in and gets much better as the timelines between character and actor shorten - the work on Pacino in particular is first rate.
The performances are across the board superb - DeNiro and Pacino in particular are so bloody brilliant here that it wakes you up to how fallow and shit they've been for so long. But really, this is Pesci's movie. He gives what is the performance of the year by turning in a really human, considered turn... and in the process circumnavigating the expectations that comes from having this particular actor in this particular genre with this particular director.
Not enough reviews talk about how extremely fuckin funny the movie is - and it is very laugh out loud funny with some of the lines and interactions (Pacino and Stephen Graham together are hilarious!) - and no words accurately describe how truly sad and surprisingly moving it is in the final stretch.
... I don't believe a single word of the source material it’s based on but it's resolutely not important to have to buy into the ('fake'?) memoir in order to appreciate the film adaptation as this massive, majestic piece of cinematic myth making - one that I genuinely can't wait to see again many times over the years!

‘Game of Thrones’ Women: What’s Next?
Scroll To See More Images
Don’t be pissed at the messenger, but we thought you should know, it’s time to let go of Game of Thrones. HBO’s smash series is about to come to a thundering end, and we suggest that you prepare yourselves. However, this doesn’t mean the ladies of Westeros will vanish from our lives forever. The women of GoT have some fantastic new roles already lined up. Here’s what’s next for the women of Game of Thrones.
Though GoT is inspired by the George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series and is generally beloved globally–the series has notoriously failed its women. During Season 8, Episode 4 –we all looked on in horror as Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel), the only woman of color on the show was beheaded. (Shrugs in spoiler.) This isn’t the first time GoT has had some serious missteps with its female characters. From depictions of sexual violence to is glaring lack of diversity–Game of Thrones has broken many TV barriers while keeping women in a box.
Many women–including actress Jessica Chastain and director Ava DuVernay have slammed the series for its use of sexual violence as a character-building tool. Assessing Sansa’s (Sophie Turner) journey on the series, Chastain recently tweeted, “Rape is not a tool to make a character stronger. A woman doesn’t need to be victimized in order to become a butterfly.” She continued, “The #littlebird was always a Phoenix. Her prevailing strength is sole because of her. And her alone.”
After a near-decade-long journey on the series, for most of its leading ladies –the actresses are ready to embark on new (and hopefully more female-positive) projects. This is where we can find them next.

Maisie Williams
Maisie Williams was just a preteen when Season 1 of Game of Thrones began. As Arya Stark, Williams’ character’s arc has been one of the most revolutionary on the series. As a little girl–Arya was a precocious little fighter, more at ease using swords with her brothers than learning to sew or wearing a dress. Over the past eight seasons, we’ve watched Arya blossom (out of necessity) into a bold killer who will do anything for her family. All hail the Night King Slayer!
Williams auditioned for GoT because she wanted the money to buy a new laptop, but it looks like she’s ready to make a career out of acting. X-Men fans can catch Williams in The New Mutants which will debut on Aug. 2. She also just wrapped filming for the ’90s set film adaptation of the comic book series, The Owners. The movie is also set to star Sylvester McCoy and Rita Tushingham.

Sophie Turner
Like her on-screen sister, Sophie Turner had little acting experience before she stepped into Sansa Stark’s gown. When we first met the auburn-headed Stark–she was an exhausting and annoying little girl who was desperate to win the affections of a prince. Sansa did not live happily ever after. Instead, she was held captive by Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey), raped and tortured by Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon) and manipulated by Petyr Baelish aka Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen). However, what Sansa did learn from all of her experiences was to play the game of thrones. As she told Littlefinger right before his execution, “I’m a slow learner, it’s true. But I learn.”
Though it’s a wrap for GoT, Turner is about to step into the shoes of another red-headed legend. She will reprise her role as Jean Grey in X-Men: Dark Phoenix which is set to drop June 7. The newlywed first played Jean in 2016’s X-Men Apocalypse. Following Dark Pheonix, Turner will star in Jouri Smit’s Heavy.

Gwendoline Christie
So, we’re never going to forgive GoT for leaving Brienne of Tarth aka Brienne the Stallion standing in her housecoat in the biting cold begging Jamie Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) to pick her over his evil ass twin sister. It really boils our blood just thinking about it. To beg a man who has THREE (maybe four) kids with his twin sister! The GoT writers tried it. However, that’s neither here nor there.
Before she slayed as Ser Brienne on GoT, Gwendoline Christie was slowly making a name for herself in the entertainment industry. However, she exploded in 2012 after her first appearance on GoT. She’s already starred in the Star Wars franchise and the critically acclaimed mini-series, Top of the Lake. After she lays down Brienne sword, you can catch the 6′ 3″ legend as Jane Murdstone in The Personal History of David Copperfield opposite Tilda Swinton. She will also appear in 2020’s The Friend with Dakota Johnson and Jason Seagal.

Emilia Clarke
Are y’all going to crumble when the Mother of Dragons dies? We aren’t. Admittedly we loved Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys Targaryen for the first several seasons of Game of Thrones, but lately, homegirl has been working our last nerve. She’s clearly showing signs that she has some real anger issues and her lust for power certainly isn’t helping. Still–we will give Khalessi credit for her journey to try and take back her family’s throne.
Though her character is no longer our fav, we absolutely adore Emilia Clarke. She’s already delighted us in several franchise films including Terminator Genisys and Solo: A Star Wars Story. She also gave us all the feels in the movie-adaptation of, Me Before You. Up next, Clarke probably won’t be riding any more dragons, but you can catch her in Above Suspicion which tells the story of the first ever conviction for the murder of an FBI agent and the rom-com, Last Christmas opposite Henry Golding and Emma Thompson. Both flicks will debut in Winter 2019.

Lena Headey
One way or another, Cersei Lannister is about to hang up her crown on Game of Thrones. Whether she wins the throne or Dany and Jon Snow take her out –Lena Headey who has played the sinister queen since Season 1 is ready to move on. Headey isn’t a stranger to film or TV. Her career stretches back into the ’90s. While filming GoT— the British-born actress did some extensive voice work as well.
Following GoT you can catch Headey in The Flood, Gunpowder Milkshake opposite Angela Bassett and Paul Giamatti, and the movie Crooks. Hopefully, she’ll ditch that tragic blonde cut though. And honestly, we don’t know how we feel about seeing Headey in pedestrian clothing. God forbid her character is courteous and friendly.
Image: Evan Agostini/Invision/AP/REX/Shutterstock.
Oh, Missandei, she had the best twist out in Westeros, and she and #BaeWorm were supposed to live out their days on some warm sandy beach somewhere away from the racists of Westeros. Nathalie Emmanuel’s days as Missandei may have come to an unsettling conclusion. However, Nathalie Emmanuel is just getting started. Before snagging a role on GoT back in Season 3–Emmanuel was known for her work on Hollyoaks. Since then she’s been in everything from The Fast and the Furious franchise to Maze Runner: The Death Curse.
Up next the vegan actress is saying farewell to HBO and hello to Hulu and Netflix. She is starring on two different forthcoming original series. You can spot her in Hulu’s Four Weddings and a Funeral written by Mindy Kaling. You can also see her in Netflix’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance which stars Helena Bonham Carter, Outlander’s Caitriona Balfe, Natalie Dormer as well as everyone else and their mama.
Image: Joel C Ryan/Invision/AP/REX/Shutterstock.
Carice van Houten
So… no one was that pressed when Melisandre took off her choker and withered away at the end of the Battle of Winterfell. We don’t know about you, but we’ve been ready to pull up on her since she burned Shireen Baratheon alive in Season 5. But we suppose we can’t hold that against Carice van Houten. She spoke to the New York Times about her character’s “timely” demise, “I was actually happy and quite sentimental when I read the script. I thought it could be a beautiful ending to this character.”
Like Lena Headey–van Houten has been a staple in entertainment since the ’90s. Post-GoT, she’ll be starring in Brian De Palma’s Domino opposite her former Game of Thrones co-star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as well as the thriller, Lost Girls and Love Hotels.

Many Old Erotic Works Starting To Come To Illumination.
Are you on the lookout for the utmost home movie theater unit? People adore motion pictures. Some movies I look for the 20th time, and onlinetopsupplement.info also I find one thing brand new with each watching. . My expertise of Birmingham is actually very pleasant people, horrible tone, a considerable amount of horrid buildings, a convergence of motorways, a part of the area is well known for their sauces and also possesses very really good night life. The paucity of in your area created films drove Filipinos to live theater productions, which commonly rely upon the abilities of underutilized film directors, service technicians and also stars. Dark Times is Marc Singer's film about homeless people living underground in an Amtrak passage below New York's Penn Terminal.
After showing up in Broadway participates in, Davis relocated to Hollywood in 1930, yet her early movies for Universal Studios were actually not successful. So, those are actually the best Valentine's's Day motion pictures, according to me. And also although a doubter could think such practices is crazy, blind, silly as well as thoughtless", it takes an individual who had similar adventure to state ... I don't understand what you would certainly claim; I presume you must enjoy the film.
You can easily additionally receive New Release prior to they are actually provided in any kind of video clip establishment or films that you have not seen in some time as well as possessing difficulty searching for. So the director began experimenting with a function called Characteristics inside Movie theater 4D, a popular 3D-modeling, animation and motion-graphics function. Another Nikita Mikhalkov's motion picture, this time based on Anton Chekhov's have fun with the latter's typical setting - a fin-de-siecle country place on the decline. The initial is actually that research studies propose many people who write evaluations are airing vent, as the home and encounter performed not encounter requirements prepared by the website or suggestions. What I love about this web site is that the checklists (like the one above) may be found very quickly on their website page, while providing a large range of flicks on this subject. And Also Cheeni Kam that have shown a various approach to Indian films but it is actually not that there was a lack of good flicks along with a different style in the aged Hindi movies. Bruce Lee is actually considered as the greatest icon of martial art in cinema and is prominent for his job in motion pictures Enter into the Dragon" and also Hands of Madness". She has likewise done some movie house, musicals, theatre plays, as well as even some manner reveals.
Moncrieff - It is actually absolutely harrowing in location, yet it is just one of those flicks that is a one off as well as properly worth watching. Listening closely to a vocal in his corn area, Kinsella specifies out on a trip that will definitely cause self-discovery as well as inevitably take shape the actually essential traits in his life.Hey Joel, Many thanks for the kind provide of a display screen ... I would certainly adore to but I just don't possess the amount of time presently! Independent movies are much less probably to protect funding utilizing the very same approaches as developments assisted through primary Hollywood workshops.Snippets of other pop music are actually also heard in the motion picture soundtrack, featuring 'Crazy', Lovin' Taste's 'Fancy', 'Jessica' by the Allman Brothers, and the Doobie Brothers' 'China Stand'. Do kids nowadays miss out on how excellent The Wizard of Ounces really is actually by enjoying it on TV.In other words, Roffman's films are actually taboo to the exclusionary specifications of canon builders as a result of their identified absence of "premium" as well as "difficulty," their general condition, and their untimely launch. When i prepared the clock along with sample code, pong operates flawlessly, if i separate electrical power as well as battery, pong shows 00:00 forever, setting the time does certainly not function.

Rainbow is absolutely brilliant. Being queer, like everything else in life, is not the same experience for everyone. Neither is the journey to discovering you are. This brilliant novella brings that journey to life, and even though it's short you connect with Taylor and you can't help but hope for the best for her. A vibrant novella that you'll want to read again.

150 random questions (for anon)
1.) What’s better, having high expectations or having low expectations? Low expectations. That way if shit goes south you expected it but if it actually works out it’s a pleasant surprise.
2.) Would you rather go without junk food for a year or go without TV for a year? TV, if by that you mean no watching TV shows since I barely do that anyway. If you mean go without using a TV entirely, probably junk food.
3.) Describe your perfect man/woman. I honestly don’t have one. Just someone I click with who can be my best friend and will take the good with the bad, because there’s a lot of bad unfortunately. I suck lol.
4.) Thoughts on school dress codes? I don’t really care, sure they’re annoying, but at least it keeps people from feeling like shit about not being able to afford nice clothes and whatnot if everyone has to wear the same thing. What does get annoying is how ridiculous people get about what’s “acceptable” for girls to wear so they’re not “distracting”. Bra straps are a thing. Get over it.
5.)Any strange phobias? Nah, just standard fear of spiders and needles.
6.) At what job do you see Donald Trump best fit? What a weird question. It’d be kinda funny to see him shoveling shit.
7.) Who was your first crush? Her name was Jessie, I was in 3rd grade.
8.) Who was your first best friend? Uhh. Fuck, I’m not sure. Maybe John, I can’t remember how old we were.
9.)What is one weird thing about you? I keep a list of all the horror movies I’ve ever watched and update it regularly. I’m well into the 400s.
10.) Top 5 TV shows you like to watch? Game of Thrones, House M.D., Criminal Minds, Hell’s Kitchen, and Lost.
11.) What are your favorite boys names? I don’t really have any tbh. Never really thought about it.
12.) What are your favorite girls names? Rachel, Jess/Jessica, Sam, Katie, Hanna.
13.) Do you have any tattoos? If so, what are they? Nope, I do want to get some eventually though.
14.) Do you plan on getting (more) tattoos? If so, what do you want to get as of the moment? I do plan on getting tats, yes.
15.) Do you have any piercings? Do you plan on getting more? Nope and nope.
16.) Do you like hugging people? Fuck yeah, if it’s the right people. I love hugs.
17.) Think of ANY person on earth right now. Who did you think of? Abby, I wonder how she’s doing.

25.) Name and describe someone who you feel most comfortable around. My friend Hanna, I can talk to her about whatever and vent to her if I need to. Taylor too.

27.)Would you rather have summer weather or winter weather all year round? Summer. I fucking hate winter like you don’t even know.
28.) If you could make an alien race, describe what they would look like. Uhh. They would probably have evolved past the need for a physical form so they’d just be invisible (or visible, I dunno) clouds of consciousness.
29.) What was the first thing you learned to cook? Spaghetti and meatballs.

31.) What is the key to happiness? Financial stability and being with someone you love.
32.) How many phone numbers do you have committed to memory? Whose numbers are they? My dad’s, my friend Jackie’s, and mine. That’s literally it.

43.) Describe the best dream you’ve ever had. I won the lottery. And then woke up pissed the fuck off.
44.) If God himself gave you a choice of either having unlimited money for the rest of your life or finding your one true love starting tomorrow, which one would you choose (keep in mind, you are still able to make a ton of money if you choose love, and you are still able to meet your soul mate if you choose money)? Soul mate, absolutely.
45.) If you could do anything (and I mean ANYTHING) right now without consequences, what would you do and why? Take Emma Watson on a date and then bang her into next century.
46.) Do you have any recipes that you know off the top of your head? What is it/ what are they? Yeah, spaghetti and meatballs, lasagna, Fettuccine chicken Alfredo.

60.) Do you believe in spiritual things like ouija boards, tarot cards, and crystals? Do you believe they are portals for evil entities to enter the mortal world? Not really. Seems kind of far-fetched. But I do wanna fuck with a Ouija board and do everything you’re not supposed to do just to see what I piss off.
61.) If you could make one mythical being real, who/what would you make? Dragons motherfucker.

Roy Moore riding his horse to the Alabama polls with truly terrible form.
Image: Joe Raedle/Getty Images
Alabama election day has finally arrived, and Republican Senatorial candidate Roy Moore made his grand entrance to the polls on horseback.
Moore — who's been banned from a mall, accused of sexual misconduct by 9 women, and alleged to have initiated a sexual encounter with a 12-year-old girl when he was 32 — probably thought arriving on a horse would be a nice distraction. But Twitter users and horse aficionados saw one glaring problem: the man's form was tragically terrible.
Here is Roy Moore arriving to vote on horseback. pic.twitter.com/nwtWPFGfsI

Footage of the ride shows an oddly stiff Moore awkwardly mounted on his horse, Sassy. (The horse does not seem thrilled to be included in Moore's narrative.)

Horse Twitter saddled up and came for Moore, brutally criticizing his form and throwing some serious equestrian shade his way.
This is hilarious, his form sucks & that horse was thinking about bucking him pic.twitter.com/NLWfm8QtlY

Obviously there are far bigger problems with Roy Moore but boy that man looks terrible on a horse.

Like I haven't regularly ridden a horse since childhood but, at minimum: reins gathered in one hand, lean forward, don't stick your legs out like you're on a goddamn carousel
— Anna Merlan (@annamerlan) December 12, 2017
Lol, Roy Moore has no idea how you're supposed to ride a horse: pic.twitter.com/3a9f0aYOyn
— GEOTRILL🌐🔥 (@delmoi) December 12, 2017
He can't even ride a gaited horse! That's literally the equivalent of not being able to ride a tricycle WITH training wheels on it!

Based on the photo that I saw, it's absolutely obvious that Roy Moore is a very poor horseback rider. I'm not a good rider, either, but I don't participate in public stunts involving horses. Shame on him and on his spouse.
— James F. Cox (@drjimcox) December 12, 2017
I don’t trust a horseman who calls his mare Sassy. My Arabian mare is called Naughty شقية . Not impressed by #RoyMoore's horsemanship. I love horses, I know horses, I own horses, I used to show horses, and Judge Roy Moore is no gallant horseman. https://t.co/xsCD5z5L1j
— Hisham Melhem (@hisham_melhem) December 12, 2017
Someone even took time out of their day to create a Sassy Twitter account with the bio: "I did not ask for this. I am just a horse. I had no choice in the matter."
According to the account, Roy Moore's horse does not want him to win the election, either.
I DID NOT CHOOSE THIS LIFE. PLEASE, IF HE WINS HE WILL RIDE ME INTO WASHINGTON AND I AM SCARED OF CARS.

Remember, everyone: In addition to the disgraceful harassment allegations, a vote for Moore is also a vote for terrible equestrian skills.

Neighbor to Watch: Maggie Tucker, Magpies
There is something magical when you walk into the door of a Magpies shop. Be it finding a group of moms and babies gathered together listening to animated story-tellers in costume reading children’s books at Magpies Baby & Child...or a few doors down...walking into a Magpies Girls Shoppe event that is a glittery, rainbow-colored, joy-filled party for young girls. Magpies has become more of a destination than just another place to shop, an idea that started with Nashville-native Maggie Tucker. We sat down with Maggie to learn more of her unique story, does she really believe in unicorns, and what she loves most about her hometown.
TSGNASH: We love Magpies and the love that pours from both of your shops. What inspired you to open your first store, Magpies Baby & Child, three years ago? And what was it about your background that lead you to that special decision?
TUCKER: Very simply put: it was a dream, and a dream that came true. For years, I envisioned creating a wonderland of gifts, toys, clothing, and unique finds for families. Some of my fondest childhood memories included local children’s shoppe visits, Cracker Barrel gift store purchases, Hello Kitty Sanrio trips, and of course as I got older, Limited, Too! I still remember to this day the treasures I would find, and that feeling of excitement that surrounded those experiences. Over the years, I found myself working in a variety of retail jobs all through my twenties. From Paces Papers, a small, locally-owned stationery shoppe in Atlanta, to a franchise Hallmark business in Nashville...and then on to corporate retail for Lululemon, I always felt connected to the people, products, and energy that existed within the industry. My first employer, (a true OG girl boss) Jackie Howard, the owner of Paces Papers, told me to either buy her store, another one, or open my own! I was 22, and I thought she was crazy, but she planted a seed! For the next ten years, my sweet husband Will and I would talk for all hours of the night about the possibility of one day opening a store. I never thought it would be possible, but he always told me we would find a way. And by a crazy turn of life events, and with the help of a true angel, I wrote a business plan, firmed up my vision, and within six months Magpies went from notes on paper to a brick and mortar shoppe!

TSGNASH: The Girls Shoppe, if only it had existed when I was a young 12 year-old, maybe middle school wouldn’t have been so awkward for a little thing like me who still had to shop in the children’s sections at the mall!! When did you realize that this was an often-missed age category when it came to providing unique, often locally-inspired, looks?
TUCKER: Within the first 18 months of having Magpies Baby & Child open, we were hearing an overwhelming amount of feedback from the Nashville community to create something Magpies-esque for young girls. We sat down as a team, brought in photos of ourselves when we were ages 7-14, and we talked through clothes, life, trends, challenges, and voids that existed for us circa the 90s. We had a ton of good laughs! We also went over all the comments, suggestions, and advice that had been shared by our Magpies guests, and it was undeniable that we had to explore the possibility of what it would look like to create a space just for growing girls. I traveled to New York in the Spring of 2016, attended a few apparel markets, and saw brands and products that had no presence in our city. I immediately wanted our Nashville girls to have access to these amazing items, and I knew we were the force to deliver that to this city. Just like the first time, I put the plans into writing, the vision became clear, and within 10 weeks the store came to life!

TSGNASH: The Girls Shoppe is such a fantastic place for young girls to bear witness that they can truly run the world. Tell us more about your girl tribe motto, and how this unique messaging piece for your shop originated?
TUCKER: The day I signed our lease, I designed a neon sign that reads, “Who Runs The World? Girls!” It’s a simple phrase, but in our giant pink neon lights, anchored front and center in the shoppe, it has sparked a major movement within Nashville girls. It’s been so cool to watch, and it has evolved so organically. Just today, a Magpies girl, age 11, came in to share with us that she has officially launched an art company with proceeds benefitting two non-profits here in Nashville. Last week, one of our girls let us know she’s hosting a cooking camp for younger girls once a month, and paying her parents to “rent” their kitchen to host the class! We have had multiple pop-up shops featuring girls, ages 6-14, and their businesses. They have logos, Instagram accounts, products, packaging, and YES, they take all major credit cards. The girls who come into Magpies are coming for more than just the clothes and gifts. It’s a place that is truly igniting and inspiring the next generation to put their dreams into action, regardless of their age.
TSGNASH: Knowing that both of your shop concepts are so unique to Nashville, but obviously wildly popular, would you ever consider opening other locations both inside and outside of Nashville?
TUCKER: Yes!!

TSGNASH: Maggie, so many young girls look up to you. They read your Instagram posts for that extra smile and words of encouragement. Who were your role models as a young girl growing up in middle Tennessee?
TUCKER: Jessica Biel. Literally. I wanted to be Mary from “7th Heaven.” Honestly, in my head, I was Mary. Also, my cousins, Meg and Katie, they were beautiful, athletic, and cool!

TSGNASH: Do you believe in unicorns?
TUCKER: Yes, the mermaids told me they were real!
TSGNASH: Okay, you know that Scout Guide is all about living local, and as someone to watch in the Nashville community, we have a few short questions about your Nashville go-tos: Aside from wearing what you can from the Girls Shoppe, where is your favorite local spot to shop?
TUCKER: White’s Mercantile is hands down my favorite place. I also usually get into trouble at Hemline in Green Hills, and Revv and Posh in Hillsboro Village, too!
TSGNASH: You seldom have a weekend to yourself, but if you did, how would you spend it?
TUCKER: I love our city, but I LOVE getting away! Cummins Falls is one of my favorite day trips. I need to give my brain space to totally check out, and being outdoors nourishes my soul.
TSGNASH: Favorite place to dine out in Nashville?
TUCKER: 5th and Taylor. Absolute favorite.
TSGNASH: What do you love most about growing up here in the Nashville area?
TUCKER: It has been like something out of a movie. It’s All-American in every way.
TSGNASH: With all the change and growth that Nashville has recently seen, if you could bottle something up to keep it like it’s always been, what would that be?
TUCKER: Downtown Franklin and Dragon Park.
TSGNASH: Thank you for continuing to inspire, and for being a fun Nashville neighbor to watch!
TUCKER: I am honored and humbled, thank you!
