Only Friends End Cards and Chronology

I saw this post in the Only Friends tag and it made me wonder: Are the end cards with the characters chronological to the episode they're attached to? Since I'm tracking them as part of my observations into the narrative frameworks of the show, this is something I wanted to explore. So I went to check them out again.

I absolutely think @jenyifer is onto something with this. We put our heads together and looked at the end cards again; if you look at the clothes each character is wearing, the end cards are NOT chronological.

Episode 1: Mew

Mew is wearing the shirt he wears to the pool party at the hostel in episode 3 and that he has on at the beginning of episode 4 when Ray picks him up. We think this might be pre-pool party at the hostel, waiting for Top to pick him up. Maybe contemplating his relationship...

Episode 2 & 4: Ray

It's a bit hard to see, but we're pretty sure Ray is wearing the bowling shirt from episode 4. Our theory is this is post dropping Sand off with his bike and driving home, maybe thinking about him. Also, Ray is the only repeat so far and it's unclear why.

Episode 3: Nick

As @jenyifer pointed out, Nick is wearing the shirt from episode 5. We're like 90% sure this is the hostel. We don't think it's Sand and Nick's apartment. It's not Boston's house as far as we can tell. We're speculating that this occurs around the same time Mew calls Boston about having sex with Top - Boston is still at the hostel with Nick; we think Nick might be in the other room torturing himself with the sex audio. Then they go to Nick's and have cursed birthday party #1.

Episode 5: Sand

This one also seems to be post episode 4, after picking up his bike at the shop. This is the outfit Sand wore in the record store. Thinking about Ray, maybe?

Episode 6: Top

This one is difficult, LOL, because Top is naked and looks like he might be crying. Having said that, looking behind Top at the window, we do get context possibly - it looks like it's raining. We are tentatively placing this end card with episode 3 because that is the only episode where it has rained and Top would be upset about something. Top is in the bath, potentially crying over sleeping with Boston (which, if we're right, OUCH).

What this seems to mean, is at least so far, episodes 1, 2, and 6 have no correlating end card. It will be interesting to see if we get end cards that go back to those episodes. Episode 3 seems to have two (TopMew), and episode 4 has three (Sand and both of Ray's since Ray's are the same one). Episode 5 has just the one so far.

I don't think it counts as a rareship, but I haven't seen REALLY GOOD cumplane (shen yuan/shang qinghua) fic and actually I'm writing one rn. idk if I want to announce it bc to write it'll probably take whole month or smth (I haven't written fics for a while, this one is probably gonna be 20-35k words), but if yall want to I can.

Next one fic that I'm not planning, but hope it'll be scumplane. I have really a lot ideas with them and they're so underrated. I don't really like they're in au, especially modern, bc main thing that usually connects them in my ideas is sqh as an author that knows a lot about sj. All the drama and angst, ughh.. love it.

I'VE ALMOST FORGOT ABOUT SCUMRAT. they don't even have a name so I made them one, he-he. it's og!sqq and og!sqh. And there isn't really romantic interaction.

(Also I usually do like to make bros OOC, way mature that they should be. and have different headcanons for every fic. idk why do you need this information)

btw, about lbh & sqh interaction in canon (non existed one) I have a thought that I'd like to write in my future fic.. sqh do often look at lbh and sometimes lbh notices that and think it's strange but usually doesn't think about it a lot. it's the only thing sqh can do bc system doesn't even give a possibility to interact with protagonist. and then after coming from endless abyss system finally gave him that chance (bc he'll definitely interact with demon lord as servant anyway). but there is no need anymore bc lbh definitely wouldn't gave him a chance to hug his "son" or something, no matter how sqh want it. and sqh all this time was thinking that he'd never talk to him and show how connected they are even without reveal. maybe it could be possible to give some good moments in white lotus life, but not anymore. but shhh, I hope no one will write this one idea without my permission.

Ah I forgot to post here but…. Guess Who’s been writing another part of my series about Polyamorous BostonRaySandNick. Now to be fair I’d like to delete the last 6 chapters of Growing up.. but instead I’ve been writing the Sand and Nick backstory. So if you want to read about Nick and Sand being adorable little soulmates this is the fic for you.

The rating will increase Id imagine. Anyways if anyone has a scene request Id love to hear it

Here’s a little taste of the fic this part even has Top, Ray, and Boston in it.

Today was the day of the game, and Sand felt a knot of anxiety twist in his stomach. He turned to Nick, his voice tinged with nervousness. "We'll be getting there during the last half of the game. Maybe we should just tell Top we couldn't make it."

Nick's eyes filled with understanding and reassurance as he looked at Sand. "Sand, it's going to be fine. Top really wants us there, and besides, I want to be there with you. We'll do this together."

Taking a deep breath, Sand felt a bit more at ease with Nick's words. With a nod, he agreed to go, hoping that this experience would only strengthen their bond.

Nick confidently took Sand’s hand as they walked toward Top’s prestigious private school. Nick couldn't help but think they might burst into flames in the immaculate halls, feeling out of place among such opulence. But he had already familiarized himself with the layout of the school, so he easily found their way to the auditorium. They handed their tickets to a bored attendant before stepping into the loud gym.

Nick scanned the gym for an open seat, the bustling crowd making it a challenge. After a bit of searching, he spotted two seats behind a small boy with a heart-shaped smile, eagerly bouncing in his seat and surrounded by a group of girls. It was clear why others had avoided those seats, but the sight of Top sending a thumbs-up their way made it all worthwhile. Despite the boy in front of them making a gagging sound, Nick brushed it off, whispering to Sand, "See, Sand? Top is thrilled we're here for him."

The game continued with an intensity that reverberated through the gym, the crowd's energy electrifying the atmosphere. Sand and Nick settled into their seats, their attention fixed on the action unfolding on the court. Top's prowess was on full display, his athleticism and skill shining as he led his team with determination.

As the game progressed, Sand and Nick found themselves cheering more enthusiastically. Top's team was gaining momentum, and the atmosphere in the gym became electric. Every basket, every defensive play, was met with roars of approval or groans of disappointment from the crowd.

Sand and Nick couldn't tear their eyes away from the intense action on the court, their hearts pounding in sync with the rhythm of the game. Every play, every shot, felt like a make-or-break moment, and the outcome hung in the balance.

Suddenly, with only seconds left on the clock, Top made a daring move that left the crowd gasping. He dribbled past defenders with lightning speed, executed a perfect spin move, and launched a three-point shot that seemed to hang in the air for an eternity before swishing through the net at the buzzer.

The gym erupted in a deafening roar as Top's team secured the victory. Sand and Nick jumped to their feet, cheering and clapping with unrestrained joy. Top's teammates rushed to congratulate him, but he made a beeline for Sand and Nick, a wide grin on his face.

"Thanks for being here, guys. You really helped me push through," Top said, giving them both a heartfelt hug.

Nick and Sand embraced Top tightly, their elation overriding any discomfort from his sweat-soaked jersey. Amidst the jubilant chaos of the post-game celebrations, Sand's attention was drawn to the sight of the boy with the heartwarming smile playfully showering the tan boy, who had assisted Top in making crucial shots, with affectionate kisses. The tender display stirred a longing within Sand, igniting thoughts of a future where he and Nick could openly share such affection.

My favorite fic of yours is “Safe in your Hands” I especially love the first chapter where you describe Kyoutani noticing little things about Yahaba’s face. (I reread it just now when I went to go look up the exact name of the fic)

water lily: what helps you get through writer’s block?

i find that it really depends on the mood i’m in, but often times what i need to do is take a step back from making myself try to write. take a few days off,  and don’t think about the actual writing process. try to relax, unwind, get work done if i need to, and when i feel like being creative, instead of trying to write i just jot down ideas - or better yet, yell them at someone! this has honestly been the best thing for me with writers block. i just talk out my ideas with a friend, work through entire story plot lines until i have a better feeling for what it is i’m trying to write. i find this hypes me up but it also gives me motivation because it hypes up the person i’m talking with, too! then when i go back to writing whatever it is i feel blocked about, i try to focus on what i talked about and not overthink things. just let the feelings flow out and not really care about that first draft. it doesn’t always work, but i find it often helps!

2023 in Review: Meta Edition

So I got tagged to do a moth-by-month meta review by a few people - @chickenstrangers, @lurkingshan, and @ranchthoughts. I wasn't sure I had enough meta or posts, but then I remembered Only Friends...

So I figured, why not?

January/February

No meta from me yet - was still lurking/starting to poke my head out and interact a little.

March

My Favorite/Most Popular: Dome is Jesus! So I've long said that my first BL meta was for La Pluie, and that's true. However, my first meta since I started watching Thai dramas was for Midnight Museum (which is, technically, not a BL). Thus we have my Dome is Jesus meta. And I don't think I was wrong? But he was also way more than that, lol.

April

My Favorite/Most Popular: Dome is one of the four Horseman of the Apocalypse. Midnight Museum season 2 WHEN?

June

My Favorite/Most Popular: Dream loves Nara. HAHA, my first La Pluie/BL meta and it's about the GL side couple. Dream wore that red 'N' right over her heart on that sweater and since I've been to the @respectthepetty school of color, I noticed it right away. AND I WAS RIGHT.

My Favorite/Most Popular: Turtle Tai. My La Pluie meta where I over identify with Tai for several paragraphs. I have no idea if it helped others who were struggling with Tai get a better understanding of where he was coming from emotionally, but writing it was cathartic and I'm so glad @lurkingshan poked at me and said I should write it.

Most Popular: Let's Talk About Trust, Baby. One of my first Only Friends metas from early on, when the show was absolutely eating my brain. I had a lot of fun breaking down the trust dynamics of the characters.

My Favorite: Baby, Let's Try. My breakdown of the Let's Try OST MV (and Only Friends BTS videos) analyzing the different framing devices and effects used and what it might be saying regarding our larger group discussions on ephemerality in regard to the show. When I watched this MV and realized what was happening, I had to drop everything and write out meta and that was so much fun.

September

Most Popular: Narrative Frameworks in Only Friends (post episode 4). I ended up doing this weekly and it was so fascinating... until the frameworks went away. Why, P'Jojo?

My Favorite: Working with @jenyifer to figure out the story of the Only Friends end cards for each episode. It finally put the mystery of those moments to rest and figuring out where they originated or where they fight in the chronology of the show really added some depth to certain moments.

My Favorite/Most Popular: With the dramatics and exhausting reveals of the Red Peafowl casting announcements, I loved my reaction: Let's Just Stan the Fucking Bird. @blmpff mentioned fan club memberships and the Featherheads were born.

My Favorite/Most Popular: (Stages of) Grief in Last Twilight. I wanted to explore where Day and Mhok were with the grieving process. My only Last Twilight meta (so far?).

And I’ve started it

So bad news I may started writing a fic for SVSSS. Now will it be poly like my only friends fic? Ehhh??? Probably not *squints* maybe. 🤔 anyways thought I’d share incase there is already a fic like it or if people won’t enjoy it. Came up with the idea as I thought about how LBH is SQH’s self insert as an author it’s easier to put a lot of yourself into the main character. Yeah it’s an idealized sexy man meat mountain of a man but I think the chaotic clingy curly hair comes from Airplane. So I thought welll what if SQQ is an idealized version of an older student bully who was cold collected things Airplane had a big fat gay crush on which is why he wanted his self insert to be changed by SQQ and kill him.

So just a simple not so simple reversal. MBJ and LBH are friends irl. LBH unknowingly reads and simps for the universe MBJ writes in his free time. The plot of (yet to be named web novel) is more about demon emperor SQQ solving mystery’s and crisis by being intelligent and alluring he’s also overly powerful with his ally Northern King SQH who is chaotic and resourceful. Most people ship SQQ and SQH together even though the romance elements in the webnovel are few and far between and usually some unobtainable one night stands with the villain or tragic woman who will be killed the next day. LBH loves SQQ has all the merch. LBH finds out MBJ is the writer after he reads the latest chapter where SQH is cursed with demise under his skin making him weaken to be a shell of his demonic self. The dialogue between SQQ and SQH is creepily reminiscent of the conversation LBH had with MBJ when LBH had revealed he is dying because of late stage cancer. Of course SQQ is prepared to do anything to save his best friend sacrificing who he was because their friendship means more than the demon empire or SQQ’s morals. SQQ sacrifices his demonic energy to save his friend. Accompanying this chapter was an extra of a clumsy drawing saying this is what the ice king’s original drafts of the characters for the artists. LBH couldn’t help but notice how similar his characteristics are to SQH curly hair terribly thin and short while radiating power through his crazy expression and SQQ was tall and stoic and LBH is horrified to realize his best friend MBJ sees himself this way tall with straight hair with an aura of superiority. When LBH confronts MBJ about the webnovel MBJ who is normally silent and a shut in exclaims that of course it’s his novel. MBJ wanted to dream about a world where they could go out and have adventures together was that such an evil thing? LBH shouts that in this reality he’s going to die and what will MBJ do then. Everything shifts into a portal and they are brought into the webnovel. LBH a half Demon hiding his identity on one of the peaks a student under MBJ who is a peak lord. They decided if they are there they might as well find SQH and SQQ for plot reasons. Haha anyways idk if I can write something like that since… I have to work…. Also the cancer thing might be too real for me (I think it’s been 15 years since I lost a close friend to cancer) But I want to write it 😭
