I would love the Casey lore but I also don't want spoilers, so I'm going to ask a bunch of stuff again!
What are Casey, April, Irma, and Sunita's fashion sense like? Music taste? Favorite food? Favorite type of books/shows/movies? Least favorite food texture? Any specific neirodivergency or mental illnesses? What are they most insecure about? Do they all fight along side the turtles or aid them with their adventures?
Please tell me everything you can about Keno!!!
Do any of the humans get mutated at any point? Why does Donnie create retro mutagen?
Is spike mutant or yokai? Will he eventually be an ally to the turtles? Do have a design for him? Do they acquire other allies? Do you have any character designs we can have a sneak peek too?
Is Bishop and his hole thing in this au? Are the triceraton? Will there be professor Honeycutt/Fugitoid?
Do the O'Neil's have any other foster kids? Do they have an apartment or a house? What the layout of their place like? Which half of them makes April 1/4 Kraang?
In the new lair layout there isn't Splinters room, does he not live with them anymore? Or is it a more separate room?
I swear everytime I do this I feel like a crazy reporter or paparazzi running up to you just asking frantic questions I'm so sorry. Also sorry if these are repeated questions.
Sunita:
has autism swag
kidcore fashion sense (bright colors, chunky jewelry, ect)
they’re mostly insecure abt how she seems to not be able to fit in with human kids as well as with people in the hidden city
she likes hard rock (which contrasts with her personality and everything abt her (i think it’d be funny))
she doesn’t like the texture of celery bc of the fiver strands that make it hard to eat (for her)
she likes learning abt plants :))
her favorite food is mango pudding
she only aids them later on as ‘the man in the chair’
Casey:
he has add swag
the grunge fashion is strong with this one
he likes indie rock and rap
he’s insecure abt his past with his dad and mom, and the fact he doesn’t know much abt his own heritage from his father’s side.
he likes the percy jackson books
he does aid them in adventures as back up and muscle
April:
her brain is on default setting
casual fashion for a casual girl
she likes anything under ‘sad girl starter pack’
she rlly enjoys marvel and star wars
she aids them in adventures as a second opinion and back up
she’s rlly insecure abt her parents not paying attention to her as much with so many other kids in the household
Keno:
country bumpkin 2 da max
half Italian, half Korean
likes making pizza and pasta all day
oldest out of the entire group (in his early 20’s)
has a farm (passed down from his family)
neighbors with Casey’s old house (a mile down from the old jones’s house is keno’s house/farm)
they meet keno during the farmhouse arc
he is very friendly and acts as an older brother
I don’t think that any of them get mutated in the series but j might change my mind idk
Spike (Slash) is my au is a leatherback sea turtle that gets mutated!! She doesn’t ally them, but isn’t a bad guy either, she’s more of a morally grey vigilant.
i have no new official designs rn but after this latest arc i’ll defo post Slash’s design
Bishop will be in this au (still trying to find out his character tho) and yes mr honeycutt is in this au but he’s a robot assistant to irma 👍
these are the rest of the o’neil’s foster kids!! they live in a nice, two story house in the city.
april gets her 1/4 krang from her dad’s side (ik girls going through it)
splinter does live with them in the new lair, he’s just dubs his room as ‘the meditation room’ bc he’s an extra bitch like dat
thank you for the asks btw, don’t feel bad or worry abt it, i’m happy to talk abt my au!!
#sorry this took so long i kept putting it off lol#my au my rules#my au#my tmnt iteration#my tmnt au#teenage turtle ninja mutants#tmnt iteration#ask reply

Accursed in the Lake’s Depths
Chapter 4.1 : Navigate Through Hogwarts
Harry J. Potter / reader
MASTERLIST : The Archives.. ⊲ previous ༄.˚₊ 𓆝 𓆟 𓆞 𓆝 𓆟 ₊˚.༄ next ⊳
10 minutes in and you were already regretting joining the three of them on their walk to the great hall. It had nothing to do with them as people of course, in fact their company was much enjoyed by you! But also in the midst of getting to know Ron and Hermione’s names, and savouring your newfound freedom, you forgot about how you were still in your uniform from..give or take, 50 years ago! How pleasant. And it reeked of the smell of lake water too; the Black Lake didn’t exactly smell the greatest. You still had an appetite, yes, but you also valued your comfort (you kept getting stared at, and needless to say it was not at all pleasant.)
By the time you rocked up the courage to speak up about excusing yourself for a moment, you found yourself in front of the all too familiar great hall. And wow was it magnificent; you’ve been here plenty in the past but it feels as if you're a first year once again. Despite this you had first of all: a long overdue change of clothes (and a shower to be frank), and secondly: a very important meeting to attend. You can wait until later to reminisce about the past, but your other plans? They simply could not wait. And so wait they did not, “Hey–uhm, sorry but would you all mind if I excused myself for a while?”
Hermione instantly responded, which you were eternally grateful for. “Oh of course not—if you need to find us in the future you can ask for us in the gryffindor common room, or maybe the great hall, and I’m regularly in the library myself; don't know about what those two” She gestured to Ron and Harry, “get off to while i'm in there though.” “What's that supposed to mean?” Ron had taken offence to her statement, but you think it's just in a friendly manner, it didn't take much to realise that their banter was mostly just for fun and games. “Hm..nothing. It means nothing!” Hermione playfully had her chin in the air, faced away from us, and started to make her way into the great hall. Hermione wouldn’t say it to any of their faces, but that girl..Fawley..she found herself increasingly more interested and suspicious of her.
“That little..” After calming himself slightly, he turned his head away from Hermione and on to you. “Right then, we’ll see you later then yeah? After lunch we’ll all probably be in class, so have fun tryna find us then.” He looked to Harry after he spoke, he had an expectant look on his face; waiting for Harry to say his goodbyes so they could find Hermione in the great hall together. Harry got the cue: “Yeah, what Ron said, hope to see you soon Y/N.” he offered you a small smile right after. Right after, they then turned around, and made their way into the great hall. You also just realised that Harry was still in his champion robes, but that's besides the point. Now that you were left alone, you could feel yourself relax slightly. Now here comes the biggest challenge..just how well do you remember the layout of Hogwarts?
Not very well you’ve noticed. And running into Peeves wasn't the best case scenario right now, not when he keeps trying to hit you with water balloons, Helga how long has he been doing that? You could vividly remember getting drenched in water even back then; you kinda miss it. But anyways, you end up, for a lack of a better term, bumping into the Fat Friar. Who right now, was your saving grace. You asked for directions on where Dumbledore’s office was and how to get there, and thankfully he offered to lead you there himself.
Finally! You made it to his office after running up a few flights of stairs, then taking your time with the last few, for obvious reasons. Anddd..! For goodness sake, you forgot about asking for the password..Merlin. You don't know any of the previous passwords, so you can't even look for a pattern..could you knock? But on what? Maybe the gargoyle speaks! Wouldn't hurt.. “Good..evening–uhm–dear Helga what has my life come to..” Nothing. It just stood there, as still as..stone; how great! “Professor Dumbledore..if you could hear me..please-” Suddenly the gargoyle started to turn and rise, and it was revealed that the floor tiles were actually stone steps that made up a spiral staircase. Huh, maybe he could hear you. Anyways, you quickly stepped onto one of the stairs as it moved upwards, and soon enough you found yourself facing a large, wooden door, with two fires lit either side of it. Making use of the metal knocker on the door, you knocked; and loudly at that, that metal was heavy!
A/N: was gonna fit the whole of chapter 4 into 1 post but it looked wayy too long

Perexcri’s back with another wonderful byler fic 🕺🕺
Will would definetely be a music snob in college o my god its so perfect! I didnt even think of this but its very in character, new headcanon unlocked ✅ (canon Mike Wheeler would, however, never argue with Will Byers. That boy is too whipped. /j)
I love the layout in this one, the way it looks like a mixtape is SO on brand and I JUST LOVE IT!!
I will be recommending this one to my poor friend who has to listen to me rant about random fanfics i find every day (i’ve also recommended aftry to them a few months back and we still talk about it lol)
I hope you’re doing well! :] 🫶
AHHHH HELLO FRIEND!! i'm so glad you read and liked the new fic :D my sincerest apologies for still being stuck on the rose, but at least there's 50k of this au to help pass the time, right?
i am a firm lover of the Will is a music snob headcanon, mostly because i think it's so funny. also, yeah, Will is nice and quiet and sweet and open-hearted to all around him, but he can also be a brat and can run his mouth. which is why this one was so fun to write!! it's fun to explore Will with those softer sides to him, but i also do enjoy making him more sarcastic or acting like the annoying little brother that he is, because i think those are aspects of his canon self, too
plus, i just. think he would be a music snob. everyone on byler tumblr talks about Mike's spotify playlist a lot, but i don't see a lot of people talking about Will's, and if you listen to it...yeah, i 100% think he'd be a music snob. his playlist is a lot of what i was listening to in middle school when i was determined to not like any music that was popular at the time and/or only wanted to listen to "real" music. he even has 3 Jack White music projects on that playlist!! THREE!!!! he has high standards and thinks he is Right, and while i don't believe he'd shove his opinions down everyone's throats, i do think he would hold to his standards
which, not that it matters in the least bit, but this is all to say that i don't think he'd listen to taylor swi[GUNSHOTS]
anyway!! glad i could convert you to my headcanon lol 😌✨
i'm also so so glad you liked the layout!! i've been wanting to do more with different formatting options on ao3 (without venturing into the realm of work skins lol), so this one felt like the perfect opportunity to do so! and i liked keeping it with a classic rock/blues/folk theme for the titles. i was originally gonna title the fic "hold me like a grudge" from the new fall out boy album and do all the subtitles based on fall out boy lyrics, but i'm kind of glad i strayed away from my addiction to Pete Wentz's wordsmithing and went for the classic stuff instead :]
and the fact that you would even consider telling your friend is a honor to me 🥺 AND the fact that you told them about aftry?? ANDDDD you guys still talk about it? you're trying to put me in an early grave, i think. my heart can't take this anymore T_T
but seriously, i'm so so glad you enjoyed it and took the time to read it!! it means the world to me, especially because i did not anticipate this fic turning into the length of project that it ended up being. i thought it'd be like 20k words, max. oh how wrong i was
thanks for being lovely, and thank you for stopping by with such kind words!! i'm wishing you all the best and hope you're doing well, too :] 💜💜💜
#ask#sweetheart you're so cruel#[obligatory “nothing against t swift because i do listen to her i just don't think this one fictional dude would” statement here]

Ry-J’s Climbing Adventures
Pembroke, situated in Ontario, Canada, lies at the junction of the Muskrat and Ottawa Rivers within the Ottawa Valley. This city serves as the administrative center for Renfrew County, though it operates independently from county politics. Located about 145 kilometers northwest of Ottawa, Pembroke is a city rich in history and heritage.
The area, now known as Pembroke, was first settled by European Daniel Fraser in 1823, who initially squatted on land later found to be owned by Abel Ward. Ward sold this land to Fraser, where Moncion's Metro Supermarket now stands, and the nearby Fraser Street commemorates this early settler’s family.
In 1828, Peter White, a former Royal Navy serviceman, settled adjacent to Fraser in the current location of Dairy Queen. His arrival was soon followed by other settlers drawn by the burgeoning local lumber industry.
Initially named Miramichi, the community transformed into a police village in 1856 and was later renamed Pembroke. The name is indirectly linked to Sidney Herbert, the First Admiralty Secretary from 1841 to 1845 and son of George Herbert, 11th Earl of Pembroke.
Pembroke was officially declared a town in 1878 and became a city in 1971. In 1861, it was designated as the seat for Renfrew County, which led to the construction of the Renfrew County Courthouse, completed in 1867. The following two decades marked significant development, shaping Pembroke’s modern layout and architecture. However, many original structures have since been lost.
The courthouse and the now-unused jail underwent extensive renovations between 2005 and 2007, preserving many historic elements, like the original jail cells from 1867 and the courtroom, which now features a replica of the original brass light fixture. This site also witnessed three executions by hanging, two in the 1870s and one in 1952.
Surviving historic sites in Pembroke include a landmark synagogue, two early hospitals, the Dunlop mansion (now Grey Gables Inn), the 'Munroe Block' in the downtown area, and two residences that the White family owned. A significant fire in 1918 ravaged many downtown buildings, including the Pembroke Opera House.
In 1898, Pembroke was chosen as the headquarters for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Pembroke, adding a spiritual dimension to its historical and cultural significance.

Dexter Void on The Wire
My relationship with music is to some extent volatile and tempestuous. With years of crate digging, record buying, cognitive cataloguing and obsessive research elapsed, I’ve unintentionally tried to forage a deeper understanding of what music itself means to me. Connecting the dots to unearth a definition or simply continue the quest to hear, touch and feel a song or artist. “Volatile” because it can be overwhelming, and “tempestuous” as it has on many occasions, impelled me to destroy the essence of my music fixation. This is either by haphazardly clearing out records once bought in various formats, or just deleting significant amounts of music files. Where I find myself inevitably swept-up by throwaway culture, I then return, only to find myself in a chasm of regret and doubt yet again. I eventually seek out and rediscover the music I deleted. It can be problematic. And now, should anyone ever ask me “what kind of music do you like?”, I think it’s easier to quip by uttering: “I hate music” and leave it at that, as I simply can’t explain it. It’s a temperamental bond.
This brings me to The Wire, another place where my enthusiasm for the music magazine veers into insanity. I’ve been subscribed on-and-off over the years, and for some reason, my relationship with it has been equally tempered. I often question myself: “Why?” However, I’ve gone full circle and arrived at a certain dedication. It’s a publication I can rely on in the world of music. So herein lies my ode, or a love letter to one of the best.
The Wire, issue 211, September 2001 featuring Björk
Looking back on becoming a teen, I remember being drawn to alternative music, labels and artists. Assisted by older siblings, this new outlook helped me wave goodbye to the shameless mainstream pop I had been following. When at college, I remember buying the occasional copy of Sleazenation and Jockey Slut, after inspiration leapt at me when browsing them. At the time I almost religiously bought NME every week, which marginally served as a good window into the world of alternative music. If I remember correctly, this was around the whole indie explosion circa 2000 onwards! There were other great titles knocking about too. The superb Careless Talk Costs Lives, Plan B, and Rock-A-Rolla, which without realising at the time actually went against the grain of mainstream music, especially when considering the more conformist and overall tame regular press like Mojo, Uncut, The Word, Clash, and god-forbid, Q. That’s not to say these didn’t have personalities and traits of their own. This were all good for a short while, but I craved something different.
But how did I discover The Wire? Reminiscing about this, it was a photocopied cover article of Boredoms for the September 2002 issue that my sister sent me. This was due to my then fascination with Japanese culture and music. Pizzicato 5, Shonen Knife, eX-Girl, Melt Banana and the Sushi 3003 and Sushi 4004 J-pop compilations on the German Bungalow label were the order of the day. The Boredoms photocopied interview arrived randomly in the post. I think my sister foresaw opening my mind with something entirely different from the Japanese underground. The article felt wild and acutely alienating at that age. I had no idea what the music was like, the grown-up writing style of The Wire was perplexing to me and had me clasping at the dictionary. The striped-back abstract nature of the page layout was wholly different to what I was used to. This memory sticks in my mind but I didn’t start reading The Wire properly until a few years later, when I’d buy the odd copy or peruse elsewhere. A few years on, my brother then subscribed me as a gift for a couple of years which greatly increased my interest.
The Wire, issue 223, September 2002, featuring Boredoms
Eventually, I subscribed myself. Yay! In recent years, I let The Wire team know about my growing fondness. They bizarrely published an email I sent on the Letters page in the May 2020 issue featuring Diamanda Galás on the cover. Under the heading “Excellence by design” they transmitted the email word for word which spoke of my obsession about the music they include and the artistic approach they apply. Everything from the unassuming covers to the typeface! I suggested a sort of celebration for issue 500 or when they reach 40 in 2022 (which they did by putting on a series of events), but I also encouraged the idea of an anthology to document their existence. I do wince at myself for this gush though! Prior to this, they published the 15 records I’d been listening to on the Charts page in the November 2008 issue – a cover feature dedicated to “Unofficial Channels.” Featuring albums by Metalux, Tipsy, Combustible Edison, Gang Gang Dance, and other oddities, the inclusion of the list made me ecstatic. It coincided with the release of my first zine called Kelpie, which collected naive and unskilled drawings for bands and artists. This was somehow significant to me and sealed my wide-eyed enthusiasm.

The Wire must realise they have a dedicated fanbase, which can sometimes verge on cult? Yet, there were times when a slight disillusion crept in. Especially when the viewpoint projected onto them is that of a pretentious one, willing to accept any old avant-garde rumblings and parps. Therefore, a few years here and there were lost because of this notion. When lockdown hit, I resubscribed my loyalty and gradually reached a place of dedication, with the aim of collecting every issue published – which may take the next 20 years!
Alongside a monthly dose of meticulous reviews and extensive interviews, the regular sections such as the Invisible Jukebox, The Inner Sleeve, its Epiphanies page and Global Ear sincerely exhilarate the soul and mind, especially as some feature the input of artists themselves. Other informative segments like The Primer, or all the way back to Savage Pencil’s Trip Or Squeek satirical comic, serve as a reassuring area of solace, eagerly awaited each month.
This leads me on to The Wire Tapper. It’s something of a curiosity, a menagerie of global sounds signalling deep into my tender membrane. The quest to collect each CD became another obsession but easier to complete. They act as a way of bringing some of the music you read about to life, and what I love about the CDs is the uninhibited idea of freedom by whoever is compiling. They vigorously take us further into the music. Always a surprise, always fascinating. In fact, to this day, a lot of the music on those discs has remained in my memory, weirdly taking on a relentless stature of importance, which sounds downright theatrical. The CDs I heard as a younger fella propelled me on to discover music by the likes of Badawi, Gas, Jin Hi Kim, Felix Kubin, Paavoharju, The Master Musicians of Hop-Frog, Sagan, Phog Masheen and an incalculable number of others!
The Wire Tapper CDs cover sleeves (1 to 64)
They lay the groundwork and do the hard graft making it easier for me to investigate and discover many mind-boggling musical experiments. The revolving cast of regular writers, contributors and freelancers all seem to have a Wire-esque demeanour, so it all feels intimately familiar and cohesive. That’s not to say there hasn’t been any duds along the way, not everything is guaranteed to be enjoyed or even understood. It’s just an attempt to broaden a musical landscape and knowledge, and sometimes you come a cropper. Yet, these are the risks you should take. Something you once dismissed can easily return when you least expect it, inhabiting a small nook and cranny somewhere in the psyche.
Their way of writing is something I can only aspire to. I sometimes hope they’d realise or have an understanding that this nincompoop intensely follows what they say. It sounds like it’s verging on cult, but is only all encompassing. On the occasion they do find criticism, mainly in reviews, it’s always intriguingly justified, and usually backed up with thought-out knowledge or subtle perception, not forgetting a wry sense of shrewdness too. It taps into the mentality of going deeper to understand music and sound, exploring it in ways others don’t. For instance, issue 481 featuring The Haxan Cloak on the cover featured a review in the Global column. Along with the lush description of the music, the writer pointed out how the record label sleevenotes were a little hot-headed and full of fantasy, when really, the crux of it demanded, “It’s brilliantly recorded and totally fascinating music; it needs context, not romantic mystification.”
My naive email to The Wire, published in issue 435, May 2020
For me, The Wire is an important magazine that champions the unusual, the unconventional and uncompromising. But I don’t really know how others view it - maybe as a pompous or stringent entity, something of indifference, but I reckon those individuals lean into the traditional rock and pop camp, which leaves little legroom for the mind-bending depths The Wire scales. The Wire isn’t for everyone of course, which is fine. I wonder why it took me so long to go full circle and realise it’s one that speaks to me. I'm grateful for what they do.
For some years now, when the topic of music drops into conversation, and I unwittingly express some sort of passion, I try to make it clear that I don’t know anything about music and would never claim to either. It’s an important factor of my personality. I’m not intelligent or skilled at anything in particular, but there’s a deep-down fire pit of neurosis aflame within me that continuously desires music.
Many thanks to The Wire ~~ Dexter Void 🖤

Avoid fashion jewelry that does not have correct taggings or seems to be extraordinarily lightweight, maybe of inferior top quality.
Gemstone Quality
Check out the precious stones very closely for clarity, color, slice, as well as carat body weight, referred to as the "Four Cs" in gemology. Premium gemstones should have minimal additions, excellent color concentration, exact cuts for maximum brilliance, and ideal carat body weight. For colored gemstones, seek vivid colors along with handful of problems. “Windsor Road Gang Gets Settled At North Bay,” Border Cities Star. 1931-10-08 - Page 01 & 10. --- Find Grub Is Very Good --- Plenty to Eat and Boys Make Furniture For Huts --- No Time Is Lost -- Contingent in Camp 20 Minutes After Train Arrives in Town --- By E. E. KELLEHER Staff Correspondent of The Border Cities Star (CAMP No. 4A4) NORTH BAY, Oct. 8 - Rain clouds were scudding across the northern sky, but lamps were shining brightly and barrel-stoves were singing last night in the eight huts in this camp. which will be the home of 50 men from the Border Cities during the next six months while they are playing their part in building Canada's long-wanted transcontinental highway.
PILE OFF TRUCK PILING off a large truck about ten o'clock yesterday morning Windsor's first contribution to the road army organized as an unemployment venture by the Ontario Government spent most of the day in getting settled in their eight-man tar paper cabins. Everyone was set for a good sleep last night, welcome after a boisterous day and night on trains, and toil was to start in earnest in the morning when clearing bush, ditching and grading will get under way.
The camp is only four miles east of North Bay, reached over a rough and winding, but picturesque, colonization road. It is the first camp east of the "Bay" on the 115-odd mile stretch of the new highway survey from the busy rail centre of Chalk River, which is about 25 miles west of Pembroke. Fifteen miles at the Chalk River end was built last year. A dozen or so of the boys got in a few hours work last evening between rain squalls. Three of them drove stakes for the surveyor on the right-of-way which skirts the rear of 4 A 4 Camp. The rest were taken into the bush by Foreman W. W. Paul and given a taste of axe-wielding.
Mr. Paul, a veteran of the hard timber regions, was not so enthusiastic about the technique of Windsor's jungaleers, but he says they may get into their stride in a couple of days time. They may have been a little nervous during the first day.
And just a stone's throw from the cook house is a small lake, where a squad of the new comers wooed the elusive pike during the afternoon. There were regulation fishing poles, real hooks and fat muskeg worms, but the pike proved ornery and not one decided to fraternize with the Windsor gang.
Carpenters were putting the finishing touches on the camp buildings when we hove in view yesterday morning and it certainly is a cozy layout considering that it was erected in less than two weeks.
At present, there are 15 sleeping cabins, each housing eight men, with two-decker bunk accommodation, a husky camp stove, and with plenty of space in the centre for crap games, poker, bridge, blind man's buff or boy scout meetings, springs, mattresses. pillows and blankets on each bunk, of course, and all equipment new.
"WINDSOR AVENUE" Trail blazers have already named some of the main thoroughfares. Windsor and Howard avenues being the busiest intersection at the present time. And the dormitories will be known henceforth as the "Better "Ole". "Windsor Castle," "The Royal York." and other names yet to be chosen.
About noon, Superintendent D. J. Kennedy, of the Northern Development Branch, called for carpenters among the first division from down East. Either the boys didn't hear him or they were bashful, but the fact remains that Mr. Kennedy found only one man who said he was good with raw and hammer. However, twilight saw most of the huts equipped with benches, tables and miniature writing desks, home-made and smart looking. No carpenters? Don't believe a word of it.
"If that Windsor crew can learn to do rock work and handle axes as well as they build their own furniture, this will be one of the best gangs in the whole outfit," A. Miller, the other foreman in this neck of the woods, told the writer afterwards.
BILL OF FARE The Windsor platoon expects to fight on its stomach the same as any other collection of bush whackers, and the way George Finick has managed the bill of fare on the first day indicates, that all of us will feel like Ghurkas in 48 hours time. The dinner tom tom sounded at twelve o'clock sharp and when we entered the two mess halls. It looked as if we had stumbled upon a harvest festival banquet, or at least Kiwanis luncheon. Vegetable soup which actually contained those things roast beef swimming in gravy, pork and beans for the more fastidious, boiled potatoes, beets, raisin pie (the kind you see in magazine ads) at least five kinds of cake and cookies, new bread, with no moratorium on butter. and gallons of steaming tea.
Those who delivered the sinister threat enroute that “I hear the outfit is tough on grub and if they are they can ship me home." came out of the mess hall feeling ashamed of themselves.
Congratulations were offered self-consciously to the cook during the afternoon, but George, in all his wisdom, only answered: “A good cook makes a good camp."
Crawley and McCracken, well-known northern contractors operate the boarding house and the commissary. The store was opened after supper and it was soon filled with a handful who wanted to buy, and the rest of the gang who were just sizing things up.
DRIPPING SKIES We weren't given any time to look around North Bay yesterday morning as a truck was waiting at the station when the train chugged to a stop under dripping skies. W. H. Cameron, of the Employment service of Canada, checked the men over quickly and inside 20 minutes we had reached camp 4 A 4 sounds like a ranch) which is set right down on the farm of T. A. Bebee.
The atmosphere is surely rural, a fact which makes a lot of the boys feel more at home. Cook's helpers throw their dish water out on corn stubble, and every now and then farm wagons trundle along the road.
Seventeen milch cows, belonging to Mr. Bebee, wander close to the camp. They still think it's their ranch, and many of them had to be chased out of the way so that the Windsor lads could drive stakes along the surveyor's tape line..
There are 24 camps on this stretch from North Bay to Chalk River.
ARRIVE DAILY It is estimated there are now more than 600 in the highway army. Additional recruits are coming in daily. The population of this camp will be increased by another fifty tomorrow.
A small granite hill through which the road will pass is less than a mile from the cabins, but rock blasting in not expected to start for two weeks. It will keep the boys busy in that time levelling bush, cutting ditches and grading.
The big idea in this section of the country is to shorten the road distance between North Bay and Pembroke, and at the same time give tourists something that looks like a good highway. It is some job, with muskegs and winter delays to contend with, but it will be done-if the jobless army doesn't join another rebellion somewhere.
In all there are 15 buildings in camp at present. Sturdy of construction, and well fortified on the outside with tar-paper. The washroom isn't ready yet, but should be opened to the public some time today. Neither have the sleeping huts been banked against wind and drifting snow. but that will be accomplished before the cold spell sets in.
Lumber trucks were swinging down the lane today bringing supplies for an addition to the kitchen and mess rooms, already well underway.
NO RADIO YET Not a radio around yet, as the men in charge have been so busy getting things ready for the Border "Originals" that they have had little time to think of musical entertainment. One of the Windsor soldiers has already arranged to have his music box shipped north. In the meantime, the two mouth organs and the piccolo must satisfy the musical appetites of the new arrivals.
Not much revelry in the club rooms last night. Weary from travel and excitement. the highway pushers tumbled quietly onto their new mattresses, and probably dreamed of the day when they will be driving their Hispano-Suizas over the road they helped to blaze through the rock and Iake and forest empire that is Northern Ontario.
