Pine Lake Farewell: Thomas
Pine Lake finally got a military base, so Sam ended her furlough and packed up the family to boot camp. Her past experience and high skill helped her to move quickly up the ranks and soon they were enjoying the view from the comfortable officer quarters. Even in times of peace, senior officer doesn’t have much free time, but in the little she finds, Sam enjoys tinkering on an old car with her boys.
Aldric’s name was becoming widely known as a headliner during the base’s construction, and once Sam re-enlisted, he was offered a job as chief of the base’s entertainment. It wasn’t long before the military stage became the destination for a good night out...for military personnel and civilians alike! He and Charlie made sure to meet up every few seasons to catch up and share laughs about life in the limelight. He made a decent effort to stay in touch with his brother’s family too, but life took them in different directions so the cousins were never particularly close.
Ivor grew up more in his father’s footsteps, loving the spotlight, and less so the exercise machines. He did enjoy spending time with Mum on the old car, though, and was proud to drive the beater around, even if they could use much fancier vehicles whenever they liked...including the helicopter.
Caleb was the complete opposite of his brother, growing up into a total fitness nut. He met Georgia Newson through the cross country club, and they’ve been an item ever since.

Adding The Gilded Age to this!
Oscar van Rhijn: (The Gilded Age) DeterminedlyShallow!Queer. If this man has ever had a deep thought in his life, he is desperately trying to forget it. If he has any deep motivations, he doesn't want anyone to know, including himself.
John Adams: (The Gilded Age) Moralistic!Queer: Saw Hamlet and took "This above all to thine own self be true" to heart. Thinks everyone else should too. May be right about that.
Oscar Wilde: (The Gilded Age) FamilyCameo!Queer: Guaranteed to show up the second they told Julian Fellowes they were doing a season in the same year his cousin's husband was going to be in New York. Pity that play flopped.
A Cast of Queers
This burst of NANOWRIMO procrastination showed up last night and still hasn’t shown itself the door, so I figured maybe if I fed it, it would go away. A list of the queer characters from Gosford Park and Downton Abbey, all labeled for posterity.
Morris Weisseman: (Gosford Park) Mercenary!Queer. Want a great role in one of his films? An all expenses paid trip to England? A stay at one of those English manor houses you’re always hearing about? He can make it happen, you just need to agree to be his Boy Toy for the duration.
Henry Denton: (Gosford Park) Fake!Queer. Actually straight, just desperate enough for a good role to do anyone.*
Ivor Novello: (Gosford Park) RealLife!Queer. According to the film he’s talented, charming, and one of the nicest people upstairs. According to the history books the film got it pretty much right.**
Arthur: (Gosford Park) Fluffmallow!Queer. The purest of the cinnamon rolls! He will induce cavities with his adorably desperate crushing! Give him hugs!
Thomas Barrow: (Downton Abbey) Spiky!Queer. Occasionally willing to try new things, but when strategies like “be kind” fail, tends to revert back to the tried and true “if they can’t get close enough to make me care about them, they can’t hurt me.” Needs hugs, but no one’s figure out how to manage it yet.
Duke of Crowborough: (Downton Abbey) Asshat!Queer. Difficult to judge how queer he is through the overwhelming desire to break his nose.
Peter Pelham: (Downton Abbey) Ex!Queer. Formerly a lovely sounding man. Presently dead of malaria. R.I.P.
Chris Webster: (Downton Abbey) Flirty!Queer. Unfailing gaydar. Amazingly adept at picking up guys at the pub without getting caught. Good dancer.
Richard Ellis: (Downton Abbey) Stealth!Queer. Flying under Parliament’s gaydar.Cue the “Mission Impossible” theme.
* To be fair, this one is highly debatable. It can not be denied, however, that he spends most of the film getting it on…………with women. Vigorously.
** Adding to the list of fanfics I want to see, I really want to see one of the Novello enthusiasts in the audience write a story about him getting back to boyfriend Bobby Andrews after the whole thing and going “Oh lord, Bobby, you won’t believe what happened to me!”

Today, on August 24th, 1975 – Queen Story!
Queen starts recording ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ at Rockfield studio’s in Galles.
🔸THE DAY QUEEN BEGAN RECORDING THEIR MASTERPIECE, ‘BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY’
- Ultimate Classic Rock, August 24, 2015
by Eduardo Rivadavia
If you were to write a history of the recording studio and, specifically, its usefulness as a laboratory for musicians' most ambitious creations, then an entire chapter might well be devoted to "Bohemian Rhapsody." The members of Queen began recording the song on Aug. 24, 1975, redefining the known limits of popular music in the process.
Suffice to say that, whatever Chuck Berry had in mind when he asked Beethoven to roll over, "Bohemian Rhapsody"'s jaw-dropping pastiche of rock and opera sure wasn't it. But then, Queen's flamboyant and unpredictable brand of art rock had been simultaneously stumping and amazing all those who'd heard it well before "Bohemian Rhapsody" came along. It continually morphed over the first three albums of the group's career, until 1974's Sheer Heart Attack started connecting all the dots.
During the first months of 1975, Queen toured the U.S. as headliners for the first time (alternately supported by Styx and Kansas), making their first trip to Japan (where they received a Beatlemania-type reception), and, in singer Freddie Mercury's case, receiving the prestigious Ivor Novello Award for his work on "Killer Queen."
All of these accomplishments no doubt boosted the band's confidence (and courage) as they started working on new material, both in unison and individually, for the album they would soon name A Night at the Opera. This was to be produced by their engineer Roy Thomas Baker, and it's safe to say neither band nor producer could have guessed what Mercury had up his sleeve as he started cobbling together both new ideas and spare song parts he'd been lugging around for years in the privacy of his Kensington apartment.
According to Baker, in an interview with Sound on Sound, his first inkling of what was in store only came when he visited Queen's singer at his home, and Mercury first played him "Bohemian Rhapsody"'s initial ballad section, concluding it by casually quipping, "And this is where the opera section comes in!" Mercury, Taylor and the other members of Queen -- guitarist Brian May, bassist John Deacon and drummer Roger Taylor -- then entered the studio following three weeks of rehearsal to help bring Freddie's madcap magnum opus to life.
Together, the foursome and their studio hands spent as much time arranging, re-arranging, adding, subtracting, and adding some more to "Bohemian Rhapsody"'s bulk as most bands of the time spent on entire albums. In the end, Mercury's central ballad wound up preceded by one of Queen's patented, multi-tracked a capella choirs and was followed by a tasteful solo from May, a minute-long opera section, then a heavy metal instrumental passage and finally a reprise of the core melody, fading gently back into wherever it came from.
All these years later, it's the song's operatic climax that remains its most stunning, almost superhuman, accomplishment, as it required them to clock as 10-to-12 hour days over a three-week period. They reportedly needed nearly 200 vocal overdubs in order to flesh out an entire choir. And then, when they were finally done, their label EMI was, to put it mildly, quite unimpressed.
Although, to be fair, the suits' reasons were typically business-oriented, as "Bohemian Rhapsody's" edged close to the six-minute mark, well beyond the limit favored by commercial radio. Instead, the label suggested they release Deacon's excellent "You're My Best Friend" as first single from A Night at the Opera, but Queen wouldn't hear of it, and it only took a moment for the immediate support of DJs across Britain to prove EMI wrong.
Released in the U.K. on Oct. 31, 1975, "Bohemian Rhapsody" would be No. 1 by Christmas and then hold the spot for nine weeks. Its commercial fortunes were undoubtedly helped by the pioneering music video shot by Queen to stand in for them on Top of the Pops while they were already back on tour by the time they were invited to appear. Meanwhile, their single was also on its way to No. 1 in Canada, New Zealand, the Netherlands and Belgium, earning Top 10 honors in multiple other countries and peaking at No. 9 in America, where it eventually became a million-seller.
"Bohemian Rhapsody" stands as one of the best-selling songs in rock history, prone to repeat visits to global charts anytime it is revived for a movie, commercial or other event, and frankly unique as nothing since has come close to matching its sheer heights of excess, bravura, and, oh yeah, inspiration.

given lily evans's surname and working class midlands childhood, is it correct to say that she comes from a welsh background? any other welsh coded characters in the series?
thank you very much for the ask, anon!
i mean, potentially. evans is certainly a welsh [or maybe cornish] surname, but it's an anglicised one and, as a result, is really widely distributed across britain:
for comparison's sake...
this means that it wouldn't be immediately perceived as being welsh on someone who didn't have a welsh accent, much like other anglicised welsh surnames, like rees, jones, morgan, and davies.
[names like mcgregor or o'connor - in contrast - would be perceived as scottish or irish in origin respectively, even on someone who was as english as they come.]
so mr evans might be welsh, or he might come from a line which has lived in cokeworth for centuries.
and - it's worth saying - that even if he is of immediate welsh origin, this wouldn't come with any significant social barriers. there are lots of jokes and stereotypes about welshmen - i'm sure he'd be known as "taff" or "boyo" to the lads in the pub and would hear a fairly regular sheep-shagging joke - but none of this would prevent him from being perceived as an equal within his class group.
[being irish, on the other hand, would. especially in the seventies.]
as for other characters, the only time the word "welsh" is used in the books is to describe the common welsh green dragon [celtic legend, we stan!].
on the basis of names, we can uncover:
six unambiguously welsh legends from canon - dai llewelyn, gwenog jones, gawain robards [who are the only people i can find with clearly welsh first names], celestina warbeck [although this comes from extra-canonical material], sir cadogan, and, of course, merlin.
two important families with names which are widespread in wales - even if they're not etymologically of welsh origin - prewett [molly weasley as gwen shipman, i can see it] and carrow.
and then a scattering of people with anglicised welsh surnames and non-welsh first names [mark evans, hestia jones, roger davies, etc.], anglicised welsh surnames and unknown first names [the hufflepuff quidditch player cadwallader], and anglicised welsh first names but non-welsh surnames [caradoc dearborn, owen cauldwell - who's much more likely to be scottish, dilys derwent, gladys gudgeon, ivor dillonsby etc.]. dean thomas also has a welsh surname, but we should assume this comes via the caribbean - the crimes of empire were perpetrated by the celts too.
in the films, bill nighy plays rufus scrimgeour as a welshman [it's actually a scottish surname - a lot of the surnames jkr uses are, which makes sense, given her long association with the place], and i've definitely accepted that into my own headcanon. even if he doesn't quite have lloyd george vibes...

I know there's a lot of answers out there for this question, but personally like what do you think are the best beatle books to read? Like what's the best for you?
hello anon! I'm hyperfixated so I'll read pretty much anything on them tbh. I do like to read the more anecdotal stuff because I love gossip lol - and some of them can be so revealing (both of the Beatles themselves and the authors). But I'll read and have enjoyed lots of stuff: the big biogs, memoirs, fan accounts, academic studies, that novel by Paul's ex publicist.
anyway, here's the list of Beatles books I've read all the way through and what rating out of 5 I'd give them. The books I've rated highest have generally been the big biographies just because I think they tend to say more and tell a fuller story, since obvs that's their purpose, so they're a more satisfying read. My ratings are based on a random combo of what they can tell us about the Beatles, how interesting I find them historiographically/as Beatles reception, and how much I enjoyed reading them.
★★★★★
One Two Three Four: The Beatles in Time (Craig Brown)
The Beatles: The Authorised Biography (Hunter Davies)
Shout!: The True Story of the Beatles (Philip Norman)
Love Me Do!: The Beatles' Progress (Michael Braun)

Dreaming the Beatles: The Love Story of One Band and the Whole World (Rob Sheffield)
A Cellarful of Noise (Brian Epstein)
Waiting for the Beatles: An Apple Scruff's Story (Carol Bedford)
John (Cynthia Lennon)
John Lennon: In My Life (Pete Shotton & Nicholas Schaffner)
Summer of Love: The Making of Sgt. Pepper (George Martin with William Pearson)
★★★☆☆
John, Paul & Me Before the Beatles: The True Story of the Very Early Days (Len Garry)
