back-alley hurricane advice
ok hi ive lived on the coast+hurricain zone my whole life and i keep having to deal w this stuff and im here with some bullet points and and sagely advice for people who Do Not Ever have to deal with this bull fucking shit at all or atleast not to this scale. honestly just stuff from my own experiences that i havent really seen anyone warning ppl about for the most part. and idk not to be Vague but like a few of those posts seem like PSAs made from someone who just gathered together a bunch of topycal/basice hurricain advice, which isnt bad at all but i just see some stuff missing a lot. and idk maybe the things i see missing arent as important or are just more prominant issues where i live but like whtvr
even if youre only on the edge of florence and havent evacuated be careful it's being shitty and kind of unpredictable and its not super late for its track to shift again.
its supposed to slow down as it gets to land and could possibly linger on the coast, which will be super bad for other coastliners even if its supposed to start weakening during that stage so even if you live in an area thats not below sea level but you're close enough to the water you should still stack up those tarps and sandbags (or trash bags filled with mulch&bricks/whatever works like we’re having to brjhtggjh)
ik i said this with mathew but do not tape up your windows it doesnt work and it can be dangerous. if you dont have plywood you can use almsot anything else if its flat and sturdy. like here at least you can go to a construction sight and theyll just pile up unused shorter planks of wood (if everyones already Snatched the xtre plywood) to nail over ur windows if a lot of damage is expected and you dont have hurricane shudders or windows bc “Fuck Hurricanes” rlly brings my area together during the days for preparation. it may not be like that in other places, i dont know bc ive literally never been anywhere ever
and fr like seriously stay away from moving flood waters even if it doesnt look necessarily dangerous bc it only takes like 6 inches of it to knock a grown adult on their ass.
even if its not moving you can expect the sewage to have overflown and its going to be nasty and dangerous if youre wading through it and get cut on debris so like just Dont lol.
if you fuck up and that DOES happen just do the obvious thing and go the hell home and wash it out and blast it with disinfectant. like flood water is so nasty yall you dont want an infected cut from it ESPECIALLY if its been stagnant for more than a day
you know wat just stay away from it in general bc power lines will probably be knocked over anywhere, you may not see it or maybe its just one on the other side of town or maybe none fell at all, its just better to be safe than sorry tbh. and even if your powers out you dont know rlly if it could surge on/off or even cut back on earlier than predicted, like you just really dont ever 100% know and you dont want to be in the water when there are a bunch of live wires in it that are close enough to your location. like idc if you have big rubber rainboots on its really dangerous please Do Not, and pay attention to things that conduct electricity that are touching the water/in the water when the powers back its really easy to not think and accidentally grab a metal railing or the pole of a street sign and i really promise its just not going to be a good time for anyone if you get shocked or electrocuted. im the power guys get in there eventually ans WILL like  cut off certain areas of power or wait to turn the power on until theyre sure its safe idk like (lmao im not 100% sure what they do but i see them dealing with snapped wires and power lines every hurricane so theyre doing Something), but they cant get to every area at once and fix it & make it safe immediately so you just gotta stay careful. it could be different where you are but power lines have always been an issue where i am
being careful goes double for pets, specifically dogs when you need to let them go to the bathroom
be ready for mosquitos if the flood water in your area doesnt drain or if it leaves A LOT of big puddles that arent going to evaporate in just a day ok just be Ready its the fucking worst they go apeshit and breed like crazy
this one just goes for everyone close enough in florence’s path to have high wind u NEED to put ur outdoor furniture away like Please do this it can do more than just get damaged like it can fuck you up and cause more damage than youd think. no one, especially you, wants their lawn chairs being thrown around by wind and banging against your house or other peoples houses or just. flying away and making debris
if ur house is around a lot of really precarious looking trees just evacuate fam. doesnt matter if youre not in any danger from florence like mathew only skimmed us last year and so many like really old, sturdy oak trees fell over or cracked straight down the middle and just ruins that streets whole week, its not great. it fuckin sucks walking around after a hurricane to get an idea of the damage and seeing that like 3 different houses have been banged up p bad by one (1) tree
