So what happened was, I started browsing the Goodwill auction site for a few clothes. A mist descended, and when I came back to myself I was the owner of a 1940s cast iron antique sewing machine.

You know, like you do.

“Hmm,” I thought, “I tried to buy an old machine before and it didn’t work. How will I know if this one needs fixing?” Lo and behold, looking up the make and model dropped me into a DELIGHTFUL world of circa-2011 era blogs with names like “My Sewing Machine Addiction.” They have links to manuals. They have photo tutorials. Some are, and I couldn’t possibly be more delighted about this, still active.

Five hours later, I can now explain with some amount of clarity how a mechanical sewing machine works and name a bunch of the weird little parts. (Turns out “stop motion flanged bushing” is not, in fact, a type of claymation porn. I am mildly disappointed, as I’m sure we all are.)

So yes, having a very neurotypical one over here today. Thanks for asking.

On a surprisingly sunny day in London, our writer Tommy Jenkins was invited to the beautiful rural home on the outskirts of the busy capital city. The garden was blooming with spring flowers, covering the better part of the front house garden. On the porch was the whole YSN-Styles family - YN, Harry and their little first child - Bee (nickname, name not yet revealed to the public). 

The first time I talked to YN was after the 2014th MTV Music Awards, already struck by her presence, the way she presented herself and treated everyone around her - always kind, helpful and ready to cooperate. This is my first interview with YN, but also Harry Styles, who is YN’s husband. 

“We’ve been married, what, about seven months?” YN wondered, looking at Harry, who was cuddling their nine-month-old son. 

“Seven months and fourteen days exactly, time flies.”

“He’s better with dates than me,” YN countered with a smile. 

The wedding was small, held in this very house, I’ve been for the last few hours. Closest family and friends, sleeping Bee in the first row attended the ceremony, which then transferred to a dinner with Stevie Nicks performing. After my question of why they didn't announce it to the public, Harry took over the wheel, “there was no need to. It was something very private, personal to us. It uhm it still feels wrong to talk about with you, no offence.” No offence was taken. “Well-known people usually don’t have the privilege to protect their private life. It’s impressive for how long you did it,” I responded. “It’s sad. But we made it work.”

TJ: Coming back to the privacy, what tipped the weight on the scales to accept our interview? 

YN: Good question. I think - well - I think after I decided to do the HalfTime Show it was bound to happen. There was no way I could hide my huge belly. Laughs. It just came up one evening and we were like “fuck it, let’s do it”.

TJ: HalfTime Show, how was it?

YN: Exhausting. It’s not easy dancing with this big of a belly, especially when you know that your child is right there. There - we had some second thoughts when I started to near the seven month mark. Just like with Bee my belly got quite big - which I love to see, hate to manoeuvre - I mean my back and legs are hurting me non stop. But going back to the topic - umm - yeah. The decision was hard, but we made it together. 

TJ: Harry, you came to the show right after winning everything you could on the BRITs. Congratulations, by the way!

Harry: Thank you. Blushing. Ehmm, yeah, in the beginning we decided to be together at the show. I actually didn’t want to be at the BRITs but YN bought me a plane ticket. Laughs. Yeah, I just flew to Glendale the day of the show to support my wife. 

TJ: How was the dancing on the platforms, YN?

YN: Terrifying. But I was harnessed and secure. 

TJ: If you let me, I want to ask you about your first meeting. Was it actually the 2013 MTV awards?

YN: It was. Ten - oh my lord - ten years ago. It’s crazy! 

TJ: How was it?

YN: I don’t remember the award show, just eating some oranges form a cute stranger behind me and then giving him my number. Which he lost.

TJ: No, you didn’t!

Harry: I did, I did lose the YN YSN phone number. My mates - my band mates - teased me for months about it. It was scary, actually. 

TJ: And when did you meet next?

YN: When was it? December 2015?

Harry: Yeah. I may or may not have made my bandmates perform FourFive Seconds during our Live Lounge set, and it just sprinted from there. 

YN: I DMed him after being shown that video by my younger sister. And that DM is actually framed and hang in Harry’s home studio. 

TJ: What was it?

Harry: “I guess it took collaborating with Paul McCartney to have you give me a hint.” 

TJ: And you started from there?

YN: And never looked back. 

TJ: It wasn’t the last time you performed YN’s song, was it? Wild Thoughts?

YN: Laughing. I love this! 

Harry: That was our first - let’s say - crumb to give people about us. 

TJ: Please elaborate.

YN: I wrote my verses in Wild Thoughts with Harry in mind, let’s be real. He was my inspiration and has been since the moment we’ve started seeing each other. But it was Harry’s idea to cover it. I loved it and he did it beautifully, like always.

TJ: I assume your albums are about YN?

Harry: Smiles. 

TJ: Okay, I understand. Let’s move on. YN, when we are in the topic of music -

YN: Oh no. My fans sent you, didn’t they?!

TJ: I’m one of them! When can we expect something? A crumb even.

YN: Two months. I - I have a full album written. Don’t know if my fans will like it, it’s - it’s different from anything I’ve done already. It’s something more rock, I’d say. With R&B of course. I couldn’t abandon my favourite genre. There are a few collaborations, Lift Me Up is there, too, a few notes sprouted all over the tracks maybe meaning something. Smirking. I really want them all to like it, but I wouldn't blame them if they didn’t. That’s just the way of how things could go. 

TJ: I love it already.

Harry: It’s very beautiful. Personal and deep. 

TJ: Harry, you’ve just won twoGrammy awards. Congratulations. But I want to ask you about acting. Do you have something, a script that you want to take part in bringing up to live? 

Harry: Thank you. Uhm. Right now I’m touring and whenever the baby is born, we’re stopping. Time for family is the most important thing in my life. 

TJ: Thank you for talking with me and welcoming us to your home.

You know how people put little signs on their cats to shame them for bad behavior? I feel like this machine deserves one of those cuz it took me like a whole damn hour or so to disassemble, reassemble, disassemble, and then reassemble once more the tension assembly in hopes it would fix the tension issues... it did not, of course. After much frustration I did the thing they say not to do and tightened up the bobbin case, which mostly kinda worked. I'm still not hot about how the stitches look at the moment but they're acceptable. jesus christ, the more complicated a machine is, the more difficult the tension situation gets. My Singer 101 and both my Atlas and Brother straight stitchers sewed beautiful stitches instantly. Of course, they all had their own more complicated problems that this Kenmore does not have (it doesn't seem to be locked up and it runs great). I've not yet gotten a machine that just works right out of the box lol. But the good news is that I currently have four functioning machines:

My Singer 101, which needed a full rewiring and some new grease but otherwise sews great, 10/10 no notes

My Atlas machine, which I have tried TWO pink motors with and neither have worked properly, so I've given up and just given it the new motor I bought. It's black and doesn't match at all, but it works.

My Brother machine, which I thought would also give me issues but while the motor is kind of loud, it seems to be working okay with minimal sparking or struggling. It came to me with some rust on the bottom and it was a little locked up, but it was nothing WD-40 couldn't fix. This motor has strangely large brushes, so I couldn't replace them even if I wanted to. They don't seem to be standard. So I'm glad it works as is.

I spent all weekend working on my 1951 Singer 201, because why do the easier machines when you can frustrate yourself with a complicated one. As of now, it's all cleaned up, but I need new wicks for greasing it, and it came to me with a completely fucked power cord and foot pedal, so I need to do the work of rewiring those, though I don't think anything needs to be rewired in the motor or lamp (hopefully). The shellac is damaged on the bed, so it and all the other Singers are potential candidates for re-shellacing via french polish.

The "easy" machines will be the older ones: the 15-30 (made 1923), the two 66s (one from 1917, the other from 1906), and I've got a New Home showing up tomorrow from that era as well. 2 out of 3 of these have motors that I have no clue if they actually work, on account of the wires being cut or dangerous. Thankfully the oldest Lotus decal 66 is in a treadle. It makes it a lot easier to deal with!

I should probably sell at least a few of these as fully refurbished machines but I am attached to them lol. The Kenmore I'm least attached to, but I need it cuz I need to hem a sleeve of a jacket and it has the free arm and the correct stitch to do that with. It's not pretty but it has its uses.

Here's what's on the bench right now. A wonderful Singer 201-2. Sleek and beautiful but not really sexy, yet one of the finest sewing machines ever made.

With it's full-rotary hook and bobbin, this machine doesn't have the back-and-forth action of the more common, oscillating bobbin machines.

Think about that: forward, stop, reverse, stop, forward, stop, reverse, stop, with each and every stitch. It works just fine and millions are sewing with that system, but suppose instead that the hook and bobbin just spins and spins with no back-and-forth. Imagine how smooth, how much more power and momentum go right to each stitch.

And instead of linkages that jerk the various shafts back and forth, picture smooth, rotating steel gears, starting right at the motor and all the way through to the hook. No belt to ever slip or break. No momentum lost.

And the bobbin! No bobbin case to fumble with. You drop the bobbin in from the top.

That's why many call this the best sewing machine ever made. She's smooth, fast, and powerful.

Since I always service the motor and gear-drive as part of a Singer 201 restoration, I recorded this one for anyone who wants to learn. In this video you'll see how assembly comes off the machine, and then how it comes apart for cleaning and servicing.

Knowing how it comes apart and what to expect is the key to most sewing machine repairs, so on our website we're starting a new section of closeup pictures and short videos that may help you out.

We've just begun to set up the new section and there are only a few machines listed at this time, but as we get time we'll post some of the reference photos we took at the beginning of various repairs, for our own benefit, and some of the tutorials we've made over the years.

I got my vintage Singer back!!! Its apparently a 201-2? Its also an anniversary edition for Singer's 100th anniversary as this machine was made in 1951! I can't wait to start sewing with it!!

South Park Facts You Probably Didn’t Know

1. The pilot episode, “Cartman Gets An Anal Probe,” was the only episode that creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone animated entire on their own, using cardboard paper cutouts and stop-motion. All subsequent episodes were animated digitally.

4. Terrence and Phillip were made to be a parody of South Park itself. When the show first aired, people have criticized it for being a crudely animated TV show that consisted of nothing but fart jokes. Terrance & Phillip, the show within a show, is a crudely animated TV show that consisted of nothing but fart jokes!

5. South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut has a total of 399 curse words, as any film at the time that had at least 400 curse words would be given the NC-17 rating, and Paramount couldn’t distribute films with that rating. Just one curse word away from losing that R rating.

6. In the earlier seasons, upon Kenny’s inevitable gruesome death in every episode, Stan and Kyle would shout “Oh my God! They killed Kenny!,” and “You bastards!,” respectively. The “bastards” they refer to are Stone and Parker themselves. Stan and Kyle are calling the creators out for killing Kenny, those bastards!

7. Before the season 5 episode “Kenny Dies,” Parker and Stone originally intended to kill off Kyle, but eventually settled for Kenny since they were running out of ways to kill him every episode. This death was originally going to be “permanent,” as he was absent for the majority of season 6, before finally reappearing in the season 6 finale, “Red Sleigh Down,” for the last scene.

8. Singer/songwriter Isaac Hayes, the voice behind Jerome “Chef” McElroy was originally rumored to have left the show due to the episode “Trapped In The Closet” poking fun at Scientology, as Hates was a Scientologist himself. Hayes’s Scientology entourage has written to the creators, supposedly on Hayes’s behalf, asking for Chef’s voice being released from the show. It was later revealed his son Isaac III that Hayes had actually left due to suffering a stroke. Chef’s final appearance before the characters death was voiced using past recordings, making the character sound like a deviant brainwashed by a cult.

9. Trey Parker even admitted that the “ectoplasm” scene in “Over Logging” was “the most offensive shot he’s ever done in the whole show.” When even the creators have said their jokes have crossed the line, that’s really saying something.

10. The “Cartoon Wars” two-parter is a roast against Family Guy. Upon the airing of those two episodes, South Park was given praise from the creators of The Simpsons and King of the Hill, with Simpsons creators sending Stone and Parker flowers, and King of the Hill creators stating that South Park was “doing God’s work.” Even though those two episodes showed how much Stone and Parker hated Family Guy, Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane actually praised the two-parter and actually agreed with their statement on what the show actually was, minus the writing staff being manatees. To this day, MacFarlane remains a good sport about this, despite Stone and Parker’s blatant disrespect for him.

I feel weird asking this never having interacted with you before, but - do you still collect antique sewing machines? I recently saw a post of yours where you talked about giving a singer 66 a new handcrank, and I wanted to ask where you got it :) I have my eye on a 201 on eBay that I might want to get myself for Christmas, but the wiring seems….. questionable at least. If you have a recommendation I’d be so glad if you could share it!

I do collect antique sewing machines, and I love talking about them! New handcranks are easy enough to find on amazon/etsy, typically imported from China but perfectly adequate quality. Not every machine can be retrofitted with a crank though, so be aware!

I have a 201-2 from 1950, which is the potted motor (direct drive) variety and a marvelous machine- it sews a perfect straight stitch. If you're feeling handy, there are a bunch of tutorials online about rewiring Singer motors (or you could take it to a shop to get fixed up). It also takes standard class 66 bobbins, which are widely available!

Antique sewing machines in working order?

Here's my Singer 201-2! Serial number indicates it's from 1951, if I recall correctly. I picked it up for $30, no power cord or cabinet, from a thrift store in 2020.

And then I bought a buttonhole attachment and cabinet (pictured above).

I then of course had to have the zigzagger!

The 201-2 is a straight stitch only machine, but these attachments move the fabric itself.

This is my only sewing machine and I use it for everything. I make bags, quilts, attempt clothing, and recently totally relined a thrifted bag with it!

I love this machine. It is powerful and quiet and incredibly cool. And older than me by quite a lot! I'm hoping that with proper care I can keep it alive for many years to come.

I suspect that it may be a common Asexual experience but when I imagine something as "sexy", I imagine something that makes your heart beat fast, that gives you goosebumps, that captures all your focus and puts a hitch in your breath and an odd tingle on the back of your neck, that is exciting and enjoyable to think about.

Post-AGT Appearance 1284: The Kelly Clarkson Show January 10

Demon Dress would have reached $201 million domestic on the Thursday before Christmas (ninth for the year total). It would have reached $320 million international through last weekend. It would still be running because the theme song (which I would have had no involvement with) would have been nominated for a Golden Globe Award and 2 Emmy awards. The Ranting Old Man album would have been nominated for best spoken word album. Man of my Dreams would have been 24th for the year on the pop charts and dropped to 16th weekly last weekend. Canadian Wildfires would have dropped out of the top 100 pop but still in the top 100 country.

Mike Pence would have dropped out of the Presidential race on the Friday before Christmas, causing havoc in the polls. Doug Bergum would still be in the race and almost neck and neck with Trump in Iowa polls. In New Hampshire though Trump would still be far ahead of Haley and Desantis. The Colbert people would have insisted that the agreement remain. Phillip will go into a coma after Trump wins the primary and the Colbert people will decide when to pull the plug.

Since Trump would have won Georgia in 2020 those 2 ladies would not have sued Rudy Giuliani so he would be free to defend Trump in his court case in New York. The other 2 trials would (for starting an insurrection and treason with the documents) would be on schedule.

I would have been in Canada negotiating future movies until just before Christmas, then rejoined my wife in Trinidad December 26. We would have returned home before New Year's Eve. My agent would have negotiated for us to renew our wedding vows on The Kelly Clarkson Show today (with Bishop Guido Sarducci presiding) however her uncle died of heart failure Sunday night at 80 and she would have flown to Trinidad instead while I alone went to New York.

So Clarkson would have a different schedule than planned, open the show in the usual way instead of the wedding vows and introduce me after the first commercial break.

Clarkson: Welcome back. Our first guest today is a comedian, writer, philosopher, singer, entertainer, director, producer, genius et cetera et cetera et cetera. He has a hit song, a hit album, a hit movie still playing and another coming out Friday, and a whole lot to talk about. Please welcome back to the show Phil Cole.

Clarkson: Phil, how are you?

PBC: I...I can't tell a lie. I don't feel very well and I might start crying at any moment.

Clarkson: Yes, Phil, even though you are a comedian, among other things, you have some sad and serious things to talk about today. Is that right?

PBC: Yes.

Clarkson: First of all, this was not supposed to be a sad visit. Tell us why things are different.

PBC: Well, we were planning to start the show a little differently. My wife was supposed to be with me and I was...we were supposed to renew our wedding vows right here on the show.

Clarkson: With Bishop Guido Sarducci, who we will speak to later in the program.

PBC: Yes.

Clarkson: Yes, now your wife is award winning fashion designer Sharon Cox of Shacocouture, and she was going to do a live fashion show at the end of the program. but that didn't happen today.

PBC: No, our marriage is fine and we want to put away those awful rumors. The tabloids abhor a happy marriage. however her uncle in Trinidad passed away Sunday night, so she had to go there for the funeral.

Clarkson: We will reschedule her visit, and the fashion show, as soon as we can. Tell us about this man.

PBC: Well, he literally is the salt of the Earth, too literally. He was a devout Christian all his life.

Clarkson: Was he a clergyman?

PBC: No, um he could preach a few knockout sermons. So can I, but uh, being a preacher means preaching 50 sermons a year every year for life. That's a different kind of calling, a very special calling.

Clarkson: Yes.

PBC: So people like him just...lived a holy Christian life every day and preached and counseled and encouraged people in the faith. Now this man was so holy.

Clarkson: What's his name, by the way?

PBC: Oh uh, Wreford Hector. That's W R E F O R D H E C T O R if you want to send a card or something to Trinidad and Tobago. So, he was so holy that, many times over the years he...when he felt his holiness ebbing, or the family (a big family full of preachers) getting worse spiritually, he would go into the woods and fast, pray and meditate, for weeks sometimes.

Clarkson: 40 days?

PBC: I don't think he ever counted. It's not for publicity. His family wasn't always happy about it. He helped raise my wife for a good portion of her childhood...and uh...he just came back and went back to work. He was a self-employed carpenter. Anyway, even though he was 79 with medical problems he did it again in the fall and when he came back this time he got sick.

Clarkson: What type of illness?

PBC: He got covid, among other things. You see I'm still wearing a Shaco mask. It's real and it's still a killer. He got over the covid, but by then they diagnosed dementia. Then he had a stroke and finally they call it heart failure that finished him off. So she's there.

Clarkson: But the marriage is fine.

PBC: Yes, I'll be flying down there tomorrow LORD willing. Then we go back to our busy schedules. She does 8 fashion shows a year on one continent or another and I'm always doing something, mostly in Canada lately.

Clarkson: Yes, in your second segment we'll be talking about business projects, but you have one very serious matter to talk to us about first right?

PBC: Yes, some of you know I am the leader of Phillip and Cole's Variety Team. Last year the Ranting 109-Year-Old Man passed away at 106 and my colleague Phillip the Boston intellectual is very ill and possibly doomed.

Clarkson: He's a one man team, folks, if you don't know, but more than that, right?

PBC: Yes, these characters represent various aspects of my personality, so I lost 14% of myself when the Ranting Old Man passed.

Clarkson: So briefly, what is different?

PBC: He grew up into a perfect world that slowly got worse and he could comment on it from that perspective. I grew up into a world that keeps getting worse.

Clarkson: I see, and you fear that things will get a lot worse soon.

PBC: Yes, Phillip is sick and will go into a coma if Trump wins the New Hampshire primary. If he becomes President again we might all be killed.

Clarkson: Wow!

PBC: So I ask, I beg, the people of New Hampshire to vote against him.

Clarkson: Who should they vote for?

PBC: The closest rival in New Hampshire is Nikki Haley. In other states that might be someone else, but I think she is the best candidate on the GOP side this year.

Clarkson: And for the Democrats, one minute...

PBC: The Biden administration is a disaster. That's not my fault. Dean Phillips is the best candidate on the primary ballots.

Clarkson: Who will you be voting for?

PBC: I'm a Libertarian. I hope we choose a qualified candidate worthy of the job, but Trump has to lose or else.

Week 2 - Collaborative Skills

What I learned at a class about some skills for collaborator. To be a good collaborator, we have to develop some skills for collaborate kind of problem solving , open-mindedness, negotiation, collective goal, shared roles & responsibilities and plan of action. And to experience what we learned in person, we made some monument. While

doing this group project, I felt some of my weakness as a collaborator.

First one was problem solving skills. Our team decided to make a monument for Jennie, a K-pop singer, I first thought that theme was not my teacher want to see about it, but I don’t have more any good idea, and just followed our group mates and helped them to make it. But the outcome has been more successful than that I thought.

If I have more time, I would like to make a building containing more contemporary problems through conversation and discussion. I think I could work with sort of social problem like earth, eco system or would gain each our interest. It would be more fun to gather each other interest and make monument about it. It's the amalgamation of diverse interests and a shared purpose that can truly create impactful monuments.

2020 - Keith Olsen

American record producer Keith Olsen died age 74. He worked with many artists including Rick Springfield, Fleetwood Mac, Ozzy Osbourne, the Grateful Dead, Whitesnake, Pat Benatar, Heart, Santana, Foreigner, Scorpions, Magnum, Journey, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Joe Walsh, and Eric Burdon & the Animals.

2016 - Pop Records

A study by The Journal of Advanced Nursing reported that pop records set a bad example by portraying ageing and old people in a negative light, focusing on dying and physical decline. Researchers trawled the musical archives from the 1930s to the present day for any tracks mentioning old age. The majority, 55 out of 76 songs, focused on 'bad' aspects of ageing. The Beatles and Elton John featured on the 'negative list', along with Pulp and The Who.

2012 - Jerry Lee Lewis

76-year-old Jerry Lee Lewis married for the seventh time when he wed his caregiver Judith Brown. Lewis split from his sixth wife, Kerrie McCarver, in 2004 after twenty years of marriage. Brown, who was 14 years younger than Lewis, was previously married to the star's cousin Rusty.

2007 - Brad Delp

Brad Delp lead singer of US rock band Boston committed suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning in at his home in the New Hampshire town of Atkinson. He died from the smoke of two charcoal grills he’d lit inside his sealed master bathroom. He was found by police lying on a pillow on his bathroom floor with a note paper-clipped to his shirt which read: "Mr. Brad Delp. I am a lonely soul." Boston had the 1977 UK No.22 single 'More Than A Feeling' and the 1986 US No.1 single 'Amanda.'

1987 - U2

U2 released their fifth studio album The Joshua Tree which features the singles 'Where The Streets Have No Name', and 'I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For'. The album became the fastest selling in UK history and the first album to sell over a million CDs, spending a total of 201 weeks on the UK chart. It topped the charts in over 20 countries and became U2's first US No.1 album.

1971 - Led Zeppelin

Led Zeppelin appeared at Leeds University, Leeds, England, during their 'Back To The Clubs' tour. This was the first tour which saw Zeppelin performing 'Stairway To Heaven', 'Black Dog' and 'Going To California.'

1970 - Black Sabbath

Having recently changed their name from Earth to Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward made their concert debut at The Roundhouse, London.

1968 - Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan started a ten week run at No.1 on the UK chart with John Wesley Harding. The album marked Dylan's return to acoustic music after three albums of electric rock music and was exceptionally well received by critics, also reaching No.2 on the US charts. The commercial performance was considered remarkable, considering that Dylan had made Columbia Records release the album without much publicity.

1967 - Pink Floyd

Pink Floyd and The Thoughts appeared at The Marquee Club London, England. The Marquee club has often been defined as 'the most important venue in the history of pop music', not only for having been the scene of the development of modern music culture in London, but also for having been an essential meeting point for some of the most important artists in rock music.

Eurovision 1992: How they qualified

25 countries entered and five these selected an entry internally. These were Greece, France, Spain, Italy and Austria.

All the other 18 held National Finals to pick their entry. Of these, two (UK and Luxembourg), already selected their singer, but held a competition to pick the song. In the case of Luxembourg, there were only two entries to choose between.

Portugal, Malta and Yugoslavia had the biggest selection, with 20 songs each.

In total, 201 songs were entered. 2 songs in the Portuguese contest, Festival da Canção, were disqualified (I still haven't been able to find out why), while the winning song of the Swiss contest, Concours Eurovision, was also disqualified. It had been previously submitted to the Swiss French language broadcaster in a French language version (and rejected) before being resubmitted to the German language broadcaster in German without telling them. I'm not sure why this meant the song was disqualified after winning. Swiss language and broadcasting politics is clearly complex!

All 201 songs went into my bracket for consideration, including those songs that got disqualified.
