How to Increase Your Running Speed?
Tumblr media
So, you are planning to run a race, but find that you aren’t as fast as the other competitors and are looking for a method to help yourself increase your speed. The average speed of an individual depends on several factors that include genes, fitness level, age, and gender. A study conducted in Strava in 2015 shows that the average running speed for men in the US is around 10 km per hour, and that of women is around 9 km per hour. As of now, the best time for running 1 mile is 3 minutes and 43 seconds by Hicham El Guerrouj in 1999. In case you are planning to run long distances, then here is the average time for popular races for both men and women.
For a 5-km run, an average male takes around 31 minutes, whereas an average woman takes around 38 minutes.
In the case of a 10-km race, an average male takes nearly 54 minutes, and an average woman takes around 63 minutes.
An average man takes around 124 minutes to run half a marathon, whereas a woman takes 144 minutes to run the same distance.
A full marathon, 26.2 miles, can be run by an average man in 249 minutes, whereas an average woman takes about 275 minutes for the same distance.
How to Improve Running Pace?
The main purpose of this article is to help you in improving your running speed. The techniques mentioned here would help you improve your pace irrespective of your gender and current speed. So, here is a list of exercises that would help you increase your endurance and thereby reduce the time required to run a race.
Interval Training
The first step to increase your pace is to perform interval training. The aim of interval training is to ready yourself to run a race. So, start with a light warm-up and jog for ten to fifteen minutes. This is followed by running at the highest speed that you can achieve for a couple of minutes. After finishing the running exercise, repeat the jogging exercise for five minutes to help yourself in recovering. Repeat the process three to four times at least a couple of times every week. You need to keep practicing this exercise until you manage to reach your maximum speed without any problem.
Tempo Training
The aim of a tempo training is to learn to run at your tempo pace, or in simple words at a speed which isn’t high, but not too hard to maintain. Usually, you should aim to achieve a little more than the speed that you are targeting. Ideally, you should run at this speed for a few minutes and then jog for the same amount of time to relax. If you are planning to run a 5km race, then you should try to keep your tempo pace for around 10 minutes, and a time of 15 minutes would be excellent. However, if you are planning to run a 10km race or longer, then you should try to keep your tempo pace for around 20 minutes with an ability to maintain it for around 30 minutes being considered excellent.
Hill Training
In some places, the track will not necessarily be flat, especially for a long-distance race. So, hill training would help you run comfortably on sloping terrain. It is very important if you are planning to race in a hilly region. To prepare for a hill training exercise, find a spot that is quite like the track you are going to run, and it would be extra beneficial if you choose the same racetrack. In case you don’t manage to find a hilly region, then you can go to a gym and use one of those treadmills that come with a slope feature. Here, you run at the tempo pace while going up the hill, and while coming down, you should be jogging. Do this exercise a couple of times for three to four days a week to reach the necessary level of endurance.
Other Things to Consider
The training steps mentioned above are the bare minimum that you need to do if you are looking to increase your pace. However, if you want better results a lot quicker, then the following tips would come in handy.
Increase Your Pace
The first thing that you need to do is try to increase the distance you run every week. Ideally, you should practice regularly on weekdays, but on the weekend, try to run as much as you can until you are able to run the desired distance, i.e., the length of the actual race. A lot of training plans are available online. You could try to follow the one that suits your style the most. Matt Lee, a certified exercise physiologist and a professor of kinesiology at San Francisco State University, states that a person who wants to see his or her progress needs to subject their body to a stimulus that they are unfamiliar with. In this scenario, it is running at a higher speed for a longer distance. By doing so, you overload your body and force it to adapt to the circumstances. Once you get comfortable, you repeat the process until you reach your goal. By doing this, you would be able to get ready for a 5km or 10km race or even a marathon in no time at all.
Don’t Overdo It
You need to listen to your body. A lot of people exert a lot of pressure on their bodies and end up injuring themselves. So, a common question that arises is, “At what rate should I increase my speed or distance?” Many experts suggest that you should increase your targets by 10 percent every week. However, a study conducted by the American Journal of Sports Medicine says that doing so doesn’t change much as people who were overexerting themselves and those who followed the 10 percent had nearly the same injury stats. So, the best way is to use common sense while increasing your pace and stop when you feel like you have reached your limits.
Try Speed Workouts
As you do your regular training, you could also try a separate speed workout where you run as fast as you can for around a kilometer and then jog back to the starting point. Do this training about two to three times about three times a week. You should always try to beat your record from the previous week if you want to improve your results.
Safety Tips
During this exercise, your primary goal is to increase your pace, but it shouldn’t come at the cost of your safety. So, to ensure that you run safely, please try to follow the tips given below.
First, get yourself a nice pair of running shoes. These are important as they are designed with an extra layer of padding for your ankles and come with a strong arch to reduce the overall stress sustained by your feet. An ideal running shoe should be one size bigger than your normal shoe so that it can account for the swelling caused in feet due to exercise. A typical running shoe needs to be changed every 600 km or so.
While practicing, ensure that you are running in a safe area that is well lit. Ideally, you should visit a popular trek, a park, or a local track for the best results. In case you don’t have these facilities, use a treadmill at your home or local gym.
This is a continuation of the above advice. You should avoid places where there are rocks, potholes, tree branches, or any uneven surface, in general. These places are not safe, and you could get injured if you are not extra careful.
If you are not accustomed to running, then start accordingly. You cannot learn to run a marathon within a week. Understand your limits and exercise accordingly. It might take some time, but a popular saying goes, “Slow and steady wins the race.”
Drink lots of water. While running, you sweat a lot, especially through your feet. So, always run in regions where you could get fresh water and try to carry a water bottle with you. As mentioned, feet sweat a lot. So, change your socks and keep your shoes out in the sun regularly to get rid of the odor.
Always keep a snack or a health bar handy. You should eat something every hour if you want to keep yourself running.
Conclusion
As mentioned earlier, your running speed is determined by a lot of factors such as your genes, your fitness level, and even gender. There is no magical way to run fast or increase endurance. If you are planning to run a long-distance race, then practice and perseverance is the only key to your success. Additionally, please consult a health expert before trying out any training plans to increase your speed. They might help you with it and tell you which plans are not suitable for you.

Maldives Travel Guide for First Timers
Tumblr media
Even before we got married, my then fiancé now husband (Jamal) promised to travel with me to different countries– Maldives on top of the list. True to his word, after two years of our marriage, he took me to my dream destination.
I had various reasons why I wanted to visit this country. For one thing, it’s considered by many as “Paradise on Earth” and it’s undeniably true to me– after swimming in the clear, turquoise waters, walking around a local island with sparkling beaches and palm fringes, running on a white sandbar, and seeing aesthetic coral reefs that are home to plenty of marine species. Second, it’s a 100% Muslim country, and it was an exciting thought to beach bum without seeing too much nakedness. Haha. Indeed, if heaven on earth exists, it is definitely in Maldives!
I used to imagine visiting the tropical paradise as an exceptionally luxurious trip– accessible only if I have millions of pesos on my bank balance. I thought of it as a place I will never have the capacity to visit in this lifetime. I may be right years back, but things have changed now. Maldives is now reachable for budget travelers like me, despite it being a luxury destination. Thanks to the government allowing Maldivians to operate guesthouses, staying in a resort is just an option today.
Tumblr media
ABOUT THE COUNTRY Maldives is an Islamic country located in the Indian Ocean southwest of Sri Lanka and India. It consists of 1,192 gemlike islands grouped in clusters called “atolls” but only 200+ are inhabited. Its capital and most populous city, Malé, is geographically located at the Kaafu Atoll and is a ferry-away from the airport island, Hulhule.
Below are some of the local islands near Malé which are accessible by local ferry:
Maafushi Island
Hulhumale Island
Villingili
Gulhi
Guraidhoo
Fulidhoo
You can choose which island you want to stay in but I recommend Maafushi Island based on experience, and Fulidhoo Island based on positive reviews I have read across the internet.
VISA
Filipinos do not need a pre-arrival Visa to enter Maldives. You will be issued a 30-day free Visa upon arrival provided that your passport is valid and will not expire for the next six months from the entry date.

WHERE TO BOOK FLIGHTS Flights to Maldives normally cost around ₱20,000 to ₱25,000 with a layover either in Singapore, Malaysia or Thailand. There are several low-cost carriers servicing the Manila to Malé route—you can try Scoot Air, AirAsia or Cebu Pacific. In our case, we took the MNL-SG-MLE and vice versa flights via Scoot Air for P14,000 ONLY per pax inclusive of a 15kg check-in baggage. I honestly thought I scored the cheapest with the said amount, but unfortunately, several weeks subsequent to booking, I came across Scoot Air’s promotional flight of just ₱8,000 for MNL-MLE round-trip flights. There are times that AirAsia offers the same promo. Insane, right? You simply have to be always on the lookout for these unusual promo fares. It’s a different story if you have the moolah to splurge though.
For more info on how I usually score cheapest golden flights, read here.

HOW TO GET AROUND You might be wondering just how you should be getting around Maldives. Well, there are few methods of transport you can avail depending on your preference and based on factors such as convenience, budget, and safety.
From the Airport Right after stepping outside the arrival hall, you will see a number of booths and their respective staff scattered around the area. If you are expecting your hotel or resort’s staff to welcome you there, just look for a placard with your name on it.
To Resorts or other Local Islands – If no one shows up for you at the airport (insert sad smiley), you may consider taking a speedboat to your preferred resort or local island. Rate depends but it typically starts at 25 USD ~ 1,315 PHP per pax. You also have the option to take a seaplane that costs a lot more than my two kidneys combined. hahajk
To Malé City – If you’re on a budget plan, walk past the booths and locate the public ferry counter to purchase a ticket to Malé City for only 10 MVR ~ 34 PHP. The ride should only take 15 minutes and you’ll arrive at Hulhumale Ferry Terminal.
Tumblr media
Ferry Schedule: FROM MALE CITY TO AIRPORT    Every 10 minutes from morning 06:00 AM to 02:30 AM    Every 30 minutes from morning 02:30 AM to 04:00 AM    Every 15 minutes from morning 04:00 AM to 06:00 AM FROM AIRPORT TO MALE CITY    Every 10 minutes from morning 06:00 AM to 02:30 AM    Every 30 minutes from morning 02:30 AM to 04:00 AM    Every 15 minutes from morning 04:00 AM to 06:00 AM
On Fridays, ferries operate every 10 minutes from the morning at 06:00 AM to 00:00 AM.
Conversely, you can ride a speedboat for your convenience. Within two minutes, you’ll reach the northeast part of Malé City.
Because I booked our hotel in Malé within a day before our arrival and because I did not communicate with them our arrival time, no one showed up for us. Wala kaming placard, jusko napaka-dukha feels. Haha. But they were supposed to greet us at the airport since we paid for that one-way airport transfer. Ang tanga ko lang talagang kausap. hehe
Around the City of Malé Arriving at the ferry terminal, you can take a taxi or a mini pickup truck to bring you either to your hotel (if you intend to stay at Malé) or to Villingili Ferry Terminal (if you want to go directly to a local island of your choice). Also, there are bus lines running a circular route around the small city. The downside is—if your hotel is not within their routes, you still have to walk after getting off on the nearest bus stop.
To our Hotel – We rode a mini pickup truck to reach our hotel. Pahirapan kumuha ng taxi, mga bes kaya nagpaka- Megan Young and Mikael Daez kami ni Jamal. Haha. We were charged 50 MVR by the driver. Minimum fare for taxis is 20 MVR per pax during the day and 25 MVR during the night.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To Maafushi Island From Villingili Ferry Terminal, the ride to Maafushi Island will only take about an hour and a half. Ticket price is only 53 MVR ~ 3.50 USD ~ 190 PHP.
Ferry Schedule:
Tumblr media
For an updated schedule, click here.
After spending the night at Malé, we went to Maafushi Island where we planned to stay for 5D4N. From our hotel, a staff hailed a taxi for us (and paid for it because of their utang to us) and instructed the driver of our destination.
Since we arrived at the terminal early, we went to a food court nearby and had milkshake while waiting. Sobrang init, mga bes.
Around Maafushi Island From the terminal, getting to your hotel will be either through your hotel’s private vehicle or rickshaw. Yup, rickshaw. Maafushi is a very small island (1.275km x 0.260km) that you can see the entire island within two hours of walking. Some hotels and guesthouses offer a rental bike service for 5 USD per hour. A bit pricey. You can see the locals using motorcycles as a mode of transportation as well, though I am not sure if they are up for lease.
Tumblr media
WHERE TO STAY There are a limited number of budget sleeps in Maldives. Unlike in any other Asian country where you will find a 30 USD per night accommodation for two, in Maldives, budget hotels or guesthouses usually cost no less than 60 USD. If you’re lucky, you may come across huge discounts in Agoda. Make sure to constantly browse the app, you might come across a crazy deal like what happened to us.
Or better yet, sign up on Airbnb using this link to earn ₱1,600 travel credit. Or get a 10% refund on your first transaction at Booking.com when you use this unique link.
For high-end tourists, exclusive resorts are the place to be but allot at least 600 USD per night.
The Melrose Hotel – It’s a 450m-walk from Hulhumale Ferry Terminal. We spent our first night here for just 30 USD. It’s the cheapest we could find on Agoda that serves breakfast. Our booking was inclusive of taxes, environmental fees, a welcome drink, one-way airport transfer, and free breakfast. The staffs were friendly and helpful; the receptionist is Pinay, yaay! Our room was small, enough for a 9-hour stay, but very clean. It has toiletries, coffee and tea sachets, iron, and a flat-screen TV among others.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Seven Corals Guesthouse – This was our home in Maafushi for 5D4N. I loved it! The staffs were friendly and attentive, the room was spacious and snug, food was in a variety, and the ambiance was cozy and relaxing. Not to mention the long list of inclusions on our ₱16,500 deal:
Meals (Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner)
Welcome drink
Afternoon tea
Express check-in
Fruit basket
Selected watersports (i.e. Jetski, but the schedule was in conflict with ours)
Free local mobile SIM card
Complimentary snacks
Night Fishing
Sunset Cruise
Dolphin Cruise (No dolphins on our cruise huhu)
Snorkeling Excursion
Sandbank Picnic
Taxes and other fees
We tried looking for another guesthouse/hotel that offers the same but only Seven Corals does. Highly recommended to keep an eye on a deal like this.
Adaaran Prestige Vadoo (optional) – One-night rate starts at ~1,000 USD inclusive of breakfast and taxes/fees. Additional of at least ~200 USD per pax for the roundtrip transfers. It can hurt your pocket but recommended to stay if you have the cash. OR- here’s the catch, you can ask a Maldivian in the local island where you stay to contact any resort you prefer and ask them if you’re allowed to arrange your roundtrip speedboat transfer. The local quoted us 100 USD (2 pax; 2-way transfer) only, 400 USD less than the quoted price on Agoda.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Novina Hotel – another great hotel centrally located in Malé City for ~70 USD only inclusive of a welcome drink, buffet breakfast, and airport transfer. Just like our room in The Melrose, it was small but well maintained. The floor was carpeted and there’s a mini-fridge, too. They served decent food which was great. I love the omelette. Staffs were very welcoming and friendly that they let us stay in the lobby after check-out while waiting for our evening flight.
PLACES TO VISIT IN MALE CITY
Masjid Al-Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al-Auzam
Fish Market
Republic Square
National Museum

MONEY SAVING TIPS
If you have a layover in Singapore for at least 5.5 hours to 24 hours, join the FREE 2.5-hour guided tours of Changi Airport. More info about the tours here.
Visit during the low season (June to November) to score off-season rates on activities, accommodation, and flights. Prices tend to drop insanely plus, there are fewer tourists traveling.
Last minute deals exist, just be smart enough to plan your trip.
Currency exchange shops in Malé City offers better rates than those in the Airport.
Bring USD with you preferably in 100s or 50s. Usual buying rate for 50-100 USD is 15 MVR per USD while for denominations below is around 12 MVR per USD.
Resorts and guesthouses only accept Dollars while local restaurants and street side shops need Rufiyaa.
Local Ferry >>> Speedboat
STAY. ON. A. LOCAL. ISLAND.
If you’re into luxury resorts, choose those closer to Malé or to the island you’re staying at.
Get not just a full board stay, but an all-inclusive package. It’s very reasonable than bringing with you your wallet all the time.
Haggle like a pro. Be it souvenirs or activities, bargain a better price.
Pack chips and biscuits.
Do not forget your swimming essentials. Sunscreen lotions and rashies in the local islands are expensive.

Facebook: Mark Zuckerberg’s Fake Accounts Ponzi Scheme
Digital Elixir Facebook: Mark Zuckerberg’s Fake Accounts Ponzi Scheme
Yves here. We edited this post from a version to appear on Aaron Greenspan’s website. Lambert reordered it to make the likely magnitude of Facebook fake accounts the starting point, which we see as the most damning evidence against Facebook. Most people accept the proposition that Mark Zuckerberg is running a less than trustworthy business that among other things, has no concern for the safekeeping of personal information. But the idea that his business looks like a Ponzi scheme is a new disclosure and merits a hard look.
By Aaron Greenspan, founder of the Think Computer Corporation1
Facebook now has a market capitalization approaching $600 billion, making it nominally one of the most valuable companies on earth.  It’s a true business miracle: a company that was out of users in 2012 managed to find a wellspring of nearly infinite and sustained growth that has lasted it, so far, half of the way through 2019.
So what is that magical ingredient, that secret sauce, that “genius” trade secret, that turned an over-funded money-losing startup into one of America’s greatest business success stories?  It’s one that Bernie Madoff would recognize instantly: fraud, in the form of fake accounts.
Old money goes out, and new money comes in to replace it.  That’s how a traditional Ponzi scheme works.  Madoff kept his going for decades, managing to attain the rank of Chairman of the NASDAQ while he was at it.
Zuckerberg’s version is slightly different, but only slightly: old users leave after getting bored, disgusted and distrustful, and new users come in to replace them.  Except that as Mark’s friend and lieutenant,  Sam Lessin told us, the “new users” part of the equation was already getting to be a problem in 2012.  On October 26,  Lessin, wrote, “we are running out of humans (and have run-out of valuable humans from an advertiser perspective).”  At the time, it was far from clear that Facebook even had a viable business model, and according to Frontline, Sheryl Sandberg was panicking due to the company’s poor revenue numbers.
To balance it out and keep “growth” on the rise, all Facebook had to do was turn a blind eye.  And did it ever.
In Singer v. Facebook, Inc.—a lawsuit filed in the Northern District of California alleging that Facebook has been telling advertisers that it can “reach” more people than actually exist in basically every major metropolitan area—the plaintiffs quote former Facebook employees, understandably identified only as Confidential Witnesses, as stating that Facebook’s “Potential Reach” statistic was a “made-up PR number” and “fluff.”  Also, that “those who were responsible for ensuring the accuracy ‘did not give a shit.’” Another individual, “a former Operations Contractor with Facebook, stated that Facebook was not concerned with stopping duplicate or fake accounts.”
That’s probably because according to its last investor slide deck and basic subtraction, Facebook is not growing anymore in the United States, with zero million new accounts in Q1 2019, and only four million new accounts since Q1 2017. That leaves the rest of the world, where Facebook is growing fastest “in India, Indonesia, and the Philippines,” according to Facebook CFO David Wehner.
Wehner didn’t mention the fine print on page 18 of the slide deck, which highlights the Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam as countries where there are “meaningfully higher” percentages of, and “episodic spikes” in, fake accounts.  In other words, Facebook is growing the fastest in the locations worldwide where one finds the most fraud.  In other other words, Facebook isn’t growing anymore at all—it’s shrinking.  Even India, Indonesia and the Philippines don’t register as many searches for Facebook as they used to.  Many of the “new” users on Instagram are actually old users from the core platform looking to escape the deluge of fakery.
The last time Mark suggested that Facebook’s growth heyday might be behind it, in July 2018, the stock took a nosedive that ended up being the single largest one-day fall of any company’s stock in the history of the United States.  In about an hour, it plunged 20% from around $220 per share to about $165.  Needless to day, the loss of about $120 billion in market capitalization in an hour provided a sufficient disincentive for Mark to avoid a repeat performance.
Having narrowly escaped the ire of Wall Street, Mark knows he cannot get off the growth treadmill he set in motion years ago.  The only solution: lying to investors about growth in an attempt to convince them that everything is fine.
Yet signs that Mark’s fake account problem is no different than Madoff’s fake account statement problem are everywhere.  Google Trends shows worldwide “Facebook” queries down 80% from their November 2012 peak.  (Instagram doesn’t even come close to making up for the loss.)  Mobile metrics measuring use of the Facebook mobile app are down.
And the company’s own disclosures about fake accounts stand out mostly for their internal inconsistency—one set of numbers, measured in percentages, is disclosed to the SEC, while another, with absolute figures, appears on its “transparency portal.”  While they reveal a problem escalating at an alarming rate and are constantly being revised upward—Facebook claims that false accounts are at 5% and duplicate accounts at 11%, up from 1% and 6% respectively in Q2 2017—they don’t measure quite the same things, and are impossible to reconcile.  At the end of 2017, Facebook decided to stop releasing those percentages on a quarterly basis, opting for an annual basis instead.  Out of sight, out of mind.
One could argue that SEC disclosures are subject to strict regulations under the Securities Exchange Act and that Facebook would never be so bold as to lie to investors in black and white.  That’s true: it qualifies its fake account disclosures with the quizzical legal phrase “significant judgment” and it chose the color orange instead of black (insert Netflix joke here) for its transparency portal graph disclaimers that read, “These metrics are in development.”  And one could further argue that the transparency portal metrics are reviewed by a team of academics, known as the Data Transparency Advisory Group (DTAG), who are supposed to vouch for their validity. But the DTAG academics—not one of whom is a statistician, despite Facebook’s direct claim to the contrary, now erased—fully admit that they are paid by Facebook, and even after months of hard work, their final report released in April mentioned fake accounts only three times, and all three were in passing. On the accuracy or validity of Facebook’s fake account numbers, the DTAG oddly had absolutely nothing to say.
What Facebook does say is this: its measurements, the ones subject to “significant judgment,” are taken from an undisclosed “limited sample of accounts.”  How limited?  That doesn’t matter, because “[w]e believe fake accounts are measured correctly within the limitations to our measurement systems” and “reporting fake accounts…may be a bad way to look at things.”
And how many fake accounts did Facebook report being created in Q2 2019?  Only 2.2 billion, with a “B,” which is approximately the same as the number of active users Facebook would like us to believe that it has.
A comprehensive look back at Facebook’s disclosures suggests that of the company’s 12 billion total accounts ever created, about 10 billion are fake.  And as many as 1 billion are probably active, if not more. (Facebook says that this estimate is “not based on any facts,” but much like the false statistics it provided to advertisers on video viewership, that too is a lie.)
So, fake accounts may be a bad way to look at things, as Facebook suggests—or they may be the key to the largest corporate fraud in history.
Advertisers pay Facebook on the assumption that the people viewing and clicking their ads are real.  But that’s often not the case. Facebook has absolutely no incentive to solve the problem, it’s already in court over it, and its former employees are talking.  From Mark’s vantage point, it’s raining free money.  All he has to do to get advertisers to spend is convince the world that Facebook is huge and it’s only getting huger.
No one in the media, let alone Congress, dares to ask potentially embarrassing questions, and few understand the minutiae of real-time pricing auctions, cookies and user disambiguation anyway.  Everyone would rather talk about the company’s dedication to “innovation” and the laughably remote chance that Libra, a needlessly complex pseudo-cryptocurrency system will disrupt central banking.  In fact, Libra is best described as Facebook’s Business Model Plan C (Plan A having been “no privacy at all” and Plan B being “encrypt everything”), which may actually be necessary as the scheme is starting to unravel.
Mark is smart, but he’s never been smart enough to listen to those with experience.  Instead, he has prioritized growth at any cost, pulling all of the control rods out of the reactor to achieve it, and now that those costs have caught up with him—namely, genocide, a role in putting a fascist, white supremacist in the White House, and severe reputational damage—he literally has no idea what to do. His usual go-to acronyms—VR?  AI?—aren’t quite cutting it, and much like Chernobyl, the resulting fallout is everywhere, impossible to clean up, and there are dead bodies on the ground.  Even his co-founder and former roommate can’t fully support him anymore, though Chris Hughes did still obsequiously refer to Mark as a “good, kind person” engaged in “nothing more nefarious than the virtuous hustle of a talented entrepreneur.”
That’s obviously false.  Mark is not a good, kind person, as I have written for years .  The only hustle he is engaged in is the usual kind: the fraudulent kind.  And if I’m wrong about any or all of this, and Facebook releases the data and methodology it is using to reach the conclusions that it has about the strength of its platform, then I will gladly admit that I’m wrong.
But I’m not wrong.  Facebook is a real product, but like Enron, it’s also a scam, now the largest corporate scandal ever.  It won’t release its data about the 2016 election, about fake accounts, or about anything material—and because Mark knows it’s a scam, he won’t agree to testify before the British parliament in a way that could require him to actually answer any substantive questions, as I did in June.  And because Facebook is also a component of the S&P 500, countless people have an incentive to maintain the status quo.
So should we break up the tech companies and Facebook in particular? It’s already a campaign issue for the next presidential election. Elizabeth Warren says yes.  Beto O’Rourke wants “stronger regulations.”  Kamala Harris would rather talk about privacy.  Everyone else—even Donald Trump—generally agrees that something needs to be done. Yet the unspoken issue at the center of it all remains: Mark is running a Ponzi scheme, but Wall Street, Congress, the Federal Trade Commission, the think tanks, and their associates haven’t figured it out.
At this point it should come as no surprise to anyone paying attention that Mark is a bad-faith actor.  He has no appreciation for the rule of law, or the role of a free press, and he has a dangerous tendency to view himself as infallible.  After discovering a gaping security flaw in his product that revealed bulk information about friends of friends, exactly like Cambridge Analytica, I warned Mark in writing about the way his sloppy code would inevitably lead him to cross paths with the FTC and cause massive privacy and security concerns—in April 2005.  His response: problems with the “Mark Zuckerberg production” were actually someone else’s responsibility and “not worth arguing about.”
Clearly, Mark can no longer argue that his decisions as Facebook’s CEO are immaterial (though he has tried).  Many have already lost their lives, whether through avoidable suicides or avoidable genocidal acts in Myanmar, due to his string of increasingly tone-deaf and spectacularly dishonest decisions.
Now, fifteen years and approximately as many false apologizes after my classmate started a grand social experiment that first captivated the media, then locked it in a profitless box, and then played a major supporting role in bringing fascism to America, the general consensus is that the best way to handle Mark and his tech brethren is through the Sherman Anti-Trust Act.  But the consensus is wrong, based on a mountain of misapprehensions.
In a nutshell, the argument in favor of anti-trust action is that in the midst of the longest economic expansion in U.S. history, it’s the Progressive Era all over again.  A recent New York Times op-ed penned by Mark’s co-founder, Chris Hughes, made essentially this point, relying heavily on input from the Roosevelt Institute.  The Open Markets Institute agrees.  In a talk at Harvard Law School, Matt Stoller argued that Facebook, Google and Amazon were “born as monopolists.”
It’s a compelling story, so long as one is willing to ignore the reality on the ground.  For one thing, software products are not railroads, which require significant physical capital and labor to establish.  Were he determined to do so, it would take Mark a few weeks to re-build Instagram and WhatsApp, and there really isn’t any way the government could stop him.  For another, I know that on this particular issue, Stoller is incorrect, because I was there when The Facebook was born on my hard drive on September 19, 2003, in Lowell House.  It hardly resembled a monopoly.  Monopolies are what happen as the result of prolonged neglect by law enforcement.  They’re not born; they’re nourished by years and years of perverse incentives.
The biggest problem with treating Facebook as a monopoly, as opposed to the byproduct of what Jesse Eisenger calls “The Chickenshit Club,” is that it wrongly affirms Mark’s infallibility and fails to see through him and his scheme, let alone the reality that he’s not even in control anymore because no one is.
Would it have helped to separate Madoff Securities LLC into one company per floor, or split up Enron by division?  Probably not, but talking about it is Facebook’s dream come true.  Because the question we should really be discussing is “How many years should Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg ultimately serve in prison?”

So, Your Twitter Account Is Suspended. Why? And Now What?

Twitter Account Suspension and Other Twitter Enforcement Actions
What to Do If Your Twitter Account Is Suspended
“Your Twitter account has been suspended.”
DA DA DAAA!
NO ONE wants to hear that… like, EVER…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yet, with Twitter continuously changing the Twitter Rulebook (and, by the way, it’s YOUR, Twitter user’s, responsibility to stay on top of those changes!), it’s nearly impossible to keep your Twitter account squeaky clean.
I know exactly how you feel. I had not one, but several Twitter accounts suspended at one point or another.
Full disclosure though: some of my Twitter account suspensions didn’t exactly come as a surprise… I knew I was playing with fire!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can learn more about why a few of my Twitter accounts were suspended in my best Twitter tools post.
Whether you knew you were breaking Twitter rules that got your Twitter account suspended or not (that’s between you and you!
Tumblr media
), let’s take a look at
several common cases of why Twitter accounts get suspended,
what (if anything) you can do to get your account back,
what to do to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
Enjoy Social Media for as Long as ‘They’ Let You
What, on earth?…
You are right, this doesn’t seemingly have anything to do with your Twitter account suspension.
However, since humans now have a SHORTER attention span than your childhood friend, the goldfish (I know, right?!!!), something I’d normally save for the end of the post has to be said now – while I have your FULL ATTENTION.
Yes, it’s THAT important!
per recent Microsoft study
Still with me? Or are you completely distracted by my masterful content repurposing?… (in this case, summing up the very long Microsoft study in two images.
Tumblr media
)
Wait, where were we? I’m so distracted…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh, yes, something really important…
When using third-party platforms (any website you don’t own, in other words), you are completely at their mercy.
You are not ‘entitled’ to anything.
Their platform. Their rules. Their last word.
If they close their doors tomorrow (like Google+ just did), everything you’ve built on that platform is done for.
Thank goodness, a platform closing down for good is extremely rare.
But what about…
Google algorithm changes?
Facebook Zero reach?
Twitter API changes?
Speaking of Google algorithm changes, did you know Google changes it around 500–600 times per year?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
No one can protect you from platform changes. All you can do is suck it up and adapt.
So, if your Twitter account is suspended, you find yourself at the mercy of a random Twitter employee to plead your case to. And, let me tell you, they haven’t been that merciful, as of late!
Now… when I said, “All you can do is suck it up and adapt“, I was half serious.
There IS something you can and SHOULD do to protect yourself.
When using ANY third-party platform (Twitter, Facebook, SlideShare, Medium, whatever), your objective should be to bring people you engage with back to your site as quickly (but spam-free-ly!!!) as possible, then build those relationships on your own turf and terms.
That’s precisely why I wasn’t crying when my Twitter accounts got suspended. At least, I milked them for all the website traffic I could before I was busted.
And yes, I went into much more detail about how exactly I got my new Twitter followers to come to Traffic Generation Café in the best Twitter tools post I mentioned above; take a look at it when you are done here.
Alrighty; moving on.
Was Your Twitter Account Suspended Because…
You know that message you got when your Twitter account got suspended?
It went something like this:
Hi,
The following behaviors are violations of the Twitter Rules:
• Creating serial and/or multiple accounts with overlapping use cases • Cross-posting Tweets or links across accounts • Aggressive following, particularly through automated means
As such, these accounts will remain suspended.
Gut-wrenching, I know.
Let’s see if your Twitter account was suspended or restricted due to…
Repeatedly posting duplicate or near-duplicate content to one or multiple accounts you run
You used to read it everywhere, “Post your tweets multiple times to make sure your followers actually see your content!”
Oh, yes, the good ol’ golden standard of making yourself visible on Twitter…
No longer the case.
Twitter rules state:
You may not post duplicative or substantially similar Tweets on one account or over multiple accounts you operate.
So, whether you used to:
post the same tweet to multiple accounts you run, OR
schedule/recycle the same tweet to go out hours or days apart
…it’s now against Twitter rules.
This one definitely hit HARD.
Take a look at this Twitter forum thread:
A Twitter employee replies:
Yet another question follows:
To that, Twitter says, “Sorry, we aren’t here to entertain every question about our policies.”
There you have it.
A whole list of don’ts and only one way to do:
craft each tweet thoughtfully,
post it manually (once),
then rinse and repeat.
Hey, I am all for maintaining/re-establishing quality content on Twitter, but realistically?… who has the time to market on Twitter ‘to a T’?
But then again… if more and more marketers stop using Twitter to promote their businesses, wouldn’t that create a great opportunity for those of us who don’t mind putting some elbow grease into it?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you do want to share the same post across multiple profiles, or to repeat it on your own profile, Twitter recommends that you retweet your original post.
Buuuuut… not too much
Tumblr media
, because
Tumblr media
Another way to get into trouble with Twitter and get your account suspended is:
Liking and/or retweeting too many tweets at once
Doing it ‘aggressively‘, in other words.
And it’s up to Twitter to decide whether what you are doing is aggressive or not. How convenient, right?
I once had a brand new Twitter account suspended within an hour of its creation for that very reason: I engaged with (liked, @mentioned) and retweeted too many posts within that hour.
Arrrrrggggghhhh….
Truthfully, what I was trying to do was to make my account look less ghost-towny! Since I didn’t want to tweet out a bunch of Traffic Generation Café posts (that was too spammy for my taste, ironically!), I decided to spread some retweeting/engagement wealth to the people I had started to follow.
Alas, that was exactly what got me banned!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
How do you stay out of this kind of Twitter trouble?
Let’s say you go to your Twitter timeline to do that manual thing Twitter wants us to do – converse, engage, relate, be present.
Don’t just go nuts and like every tweet you see!
Give yourself a limit – let’s say to like 5 tweets, to retweet 5 tweets with a thoughtful comment to go with each one, and to share one of your blog posts in-between.
Better yet, do this 2-3 times per day.
OR better yet, establish an easy-to-follow daily Twitter routine to make sure you make the most of Twitter within the least amount of time.
Read How to Manage Twitter Like a Pro [Your Daily Twitter Routine] to…well, learn how to manage Twitter like a pro
Tumblr media
!
The next most common reason to get your Twitter account suspended is:
Aggressively following and unfollowing Twitter users
Twitter considers it spam:
…if you have followed and/or unfollowed a large number of of accounts in a short time period, particularly by automated means (aggressive following or follower churn).
And, as if that was unclear in any way, here’s more:
Following/unfollowing users was always a huge part of my Twitter marketing strategy.
So much so that I don’t mind going a bit gray hat on this one every once in while.
Learn more here: Best Twitter Tools to Get More Twitter Followers in 2019
Closely related to automatically following/unfollowing users is:
Using or promoting any tools to automatically add Twitter followers or engagements
Twitter considers it spam:
…if you sell, purchase, or attempt to artificially inflate account interactions (such as followers, Retweets, likes, etc.); and
…if you use or promote third-party services or apps that claim to get you more followers, Retweets, or likes (such as follower trains, sites promising “more followers fast”, or any other site that offers to automatically add followers or engagements to your account or Tweets).
Totally get it.
It’s one thing to use a Twitter automation tool to make your life of getting more followers easier (but you still have to do the work!!!), and it’s something completely different and definitely spammy to outright BUY followers, Retweets, likes, etc.
This one is easy: DON’T DO IT.
Abusing trending topics or hashtags
Twitter considers it spam:
…if you post multiple updates to a trending or popular topic with an intent to subvert or manipulate the topic to drive traffic or attention to unrelated accounts, products, services, or initiatives.
Say, you create a tweet, then add a popular/trending hashtag to it – not because it’s relevant, but because you want your tweet to be seen by the people following the topic.
That example is a clearly spammy and unacceptable way to market your business.
I am sure most of you don’t do that, but there are many other ways to abuse trending topics… be assured that Twitter is monitoring that one very closely.
Posting affiliate links
Twitter considers it spam:
…if you post misleading, deceptive, or malicious links (e.g., affiliate links, links to malware/clickjacking pages, etc.).
Social media is not a storefront. Not the right place to make a sale; unless you are paying for ads, of course.
Bring your followers back to your site. THEN convert them.
Twitter Account Suspension and Other Twitter Enforcement Actions
Now comes the really hard part: paying for your Twitter indiscretions.
I’ve got some good and some bad news for you here.
The good news is Twitter is genuinely trying to make the platform better for everyone.
And they ‘aren’t there to getcha…‘
Should they feel your otherwise healthy Twitter account is getting into a bit of trouble with Twitter rules, they won’t just ban you, I promise.
They’ll try to warn you first (most often, send you an email notification), then might give you a slap on the wrist.
For instance:
Twitter Might Require Tweet Removal
Once again, this kind of Twitter enforcement action exists to ensure:
…we are not being overly harsh with an otherwise healthy account that made a mistake and violated our Rules.
If Twitter determines that your tweet violated the Twitter Rules:
They’ll send you an email to let you know which tweet is in violation and which specific rule it violated.
You then can either remove the offending tweet or
…appeal it if you believe Twitter made an error.
(Hmmm… Remove it and count your blessings!
Tumblr media
)
Meanwhile, while Twitter is waiting for you to remove the tweet, they’ll hide that tweet from public view and will replace the original content with a notice stating that the tweet is no longer available because it violated Twitter Rules.
This notice will also stay for 14 days after the tweet was removed.
Twitter Might Place an Account in Read-Only Mode
Once again, this slap on the wrist is reserved for an otherwise healthy account that is ‘in the middle of an abusive episode‘, as Twitter puts it.
In this case, Twitter might temporarily make your account read-only, limiting your ability to Tweet, Retweet, or Like content until ‘calmer heads prevail‘.
If that’s your punishment, then:
You’ll still be able to read your timeline.
You’ll only be able to send Direct Messages to your followers.
Others will still be able to see and engage with the account.
The duration of this enforcement action can range from 12 hours to 7 days, depending on the nature of the violation.
Twitter Might Make Your Tweets and/or Account Less Visible
This is something that’s referred to as ‘restricting or limiting an account or content’ throughout Twitter Rules, yet there’s no specific section that explains what it is.
From what I could gather, it sounds like Twitter might limit (a.k.a not show) your account or tweets in search results, replies, and on timelines.
The only other piece of info we have is:
Limiting Tweet visibility depends on a number of signals about the nature of the interaction and the quality of the content.
Twitter Might Make You Verify Your Account
This helps Twitter weed out violators who are abusing Twitter multiple accounts rules – operating those to spam Twitter users, for instance.
If Twitter suspects you are running one of those Twitter spam rings
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
, they will lock your account (remove it from follower counts, Retweets, and likes) and require you to verify account ownership with a phone number or email address.
Twitter Account Suspension or Permanent Suspension
Compared to a Twitter account suspension, all previous enforcement actions were just that: a slap on the rist.
Account suspensions happen if Twitter determines that a person
has violated the Twitter Rules in a particularly egregious way,or
has repeatedly violated them even after receiving notifications from Twitter.
When Twitter suspends an account, they notify the account owner and explain which policy or policies he/she has violated and which content is in violation.
What to Do If Your Twitter Account Is Suspended
That’s the good news: if you believe Twitter made a mistake, you can appeal your account suspension.
=> Follow this link to file a report
The bad news is if you appeal is denied, your Twitter account suspension becomes permanent.
Twitter will remove your account from global view, AND you will not be allowed to create new accounts.
Yes, it’s very sad and very final…
Marketing Takeaway
Phew!…
Bookmark this post and use it as a guide of what not to do to remain in good standing with Twitter.
It’s definitely a lot easier to try to follow Twitter rules than to deal with a Twitter account suspension!

Zero to Keto in 16 hours Experiment: Meals, Measuring Tools, Results
Tumblr media
Keto is not a miracle, but exceptionally useful for burning fat and losing weight without hunger and cravings. People have more success losing weight with keto compared to other diets, thanks to its powerful satiety effect. There are two problems with experiencing the benefits of keto in my everyday life: 1. Starting keto can be hard
2. Finding keto meals that take me to optimal ketosis can be stressful and suck up too much effort, time and money So, with my cofounder and recipe mastermind Arno, we wanted to share the results of a simple experiment: Zero to Keto in 16 hours! In this post, we’ll tackle the tricky business of getting into ketosis without hours of planning, stressing out or breaking your bank. This is something you’ll obviously need to nail first. If you’re curious and want to try keto for the first time, or if you’re experienced with keto and want to make it easy and tasty, this one’s for you. “Easing in” VS Zero to Keto in 16 hours? In my previous newsletters, I’ve talked about taking it slow and not going “full keto” within 24 hours. Easing into keto gradually can be helpful, especially if you normally tend to eat meals high in carbs. Too fast a transition to a fat-heavy diet can upset your stomach and lead to loose stools, which can make social life the wrong kind of “exciting” for a few days. After eating carbs for a while, I’ve often preferred to prepare my body by gradually increasing the amount of fats in my diet for 1-5 days before going full keto (<20-50 g of carbs / day, 70-75% energy from fats, 20% from protein, depending on my goal). For me, this has meant adding more fats like extra-virgin olive oil and butter into my foods, preferring plant-based bowl foods like veggies and avocados with eggs and tuna, and leaving out potatoes, starches, rice and oats. However, a faster route is also possible: Simply enjoying a simple low-carb meal 2-3 hours before bedtime, and starting my day with an Ambronite Keto Meal Shake Chocolate. The last time I followed this simple method, my evening meal was an avocado with some cherry tomatoes, a handful of almonds and a salad with greens and veggies like spinach and broccoli with some tasty extra virgin olive oil, sea salt and tasty Italian balsamic vinegar. This “pre-keto” evening meal doesn’t even have to be ketogenic or too strict with limiting carbs: I’ve noticed that for me, it can easily contain 10-20 grams of carbs, although I’ll reach ketosis a bit faster if it has less.
With Arno, we’ve turned our salad game into an art form. Here’s Arno’s simple yet elegant recipe for the first evening of Zero to Keto in 16 Hours. It’s ketogenic and packed with gut and stomach healthy fibre to aid with the transition, so it’s a great choice for any keto meal.
Arno’s Big Keto Dinner Salad
Calories (kcal): 600-650 kcal in total (scale to half for smaller appetites!)
Prep time: 10 min
Ingredients:
1 avocado (~300 kcal)
1-2 boiled eggs (~75 kcal each) and / or handful of nuts (e.g. macadamias are great)
2-3 cups of spinach (~7 kcal per cup, 30 g) or other greens
Half cup (50 - 100 g) cherry tomatoes (~15 kcal)
30 g olives (~30 kcal)
Optionally add feta cheese on top.
Preparation: Mix spinach and greens in a bowl, add avocado, add eggs. Voila!
Top it off: Extra virgin olive oil (1 tbsp), balsamic vinegar, squeeze of lemon juice, salt, pepper.
Pro tip: You can add more olive oil for more keto-friendly calories: 1 tbsp is ~120 kcal. Also, you can add more eggs or nuts for more protein.
The role of this evening meal is to aid with the fast zero-to-keto transition while being stomach-friendly.
In the morning, I’ll have a full Ambronite Keto Meal Shake. Then I’ll just wait for a few hours. Normally when transitioning into ketosis, I’d go for a long walk or easy jog while listening to music or podcasts or take calls on work days, but with the keto-accelerating mix of premium fats and MCTs in the Ambronite Keto Meal Shake, this isn’t even required. Before dinner on the same day, I’ve reached ketosis. Often my ketones pop to over 0,5 mmol/L roughly during the time I’d normally reach for an afternoon snack, around 3 PM. Within 4-5 hours after my Keto Meal Shake breakfast, a simple CareSens blood measurement from my finger tip reveals that my blood ketones are at 0.6-0.7 mmol/L. With very little effort, I’m now in ketosis, and already enjoying many of the benefits - including fat burn, weight loss and satiety. Cravings and hunger are a common question at this stage. Hiding high-carb treats can make everything easier. Personally, I don’t even feel the need to hide the high carb treats and snacks in my house anymore, because the craving-stopping effect of keto is pretty strong for me once I pass the 0.6 mmol/L threshold. Don’t try this at home if it’s your first time though, or if you know you love your high-carb treats A LOT. It’s weird to look at your favorite treats and not feel tempted to munch on one! This shouldn’t be too surprising though: blood ketone levels of around 0.6 mmol/L and over seem to suppress the hunger hormone ghrelin that’s partly responsible for the cravings we normally feel. Optimal ketone levels for weight loss: 1-3 mmol/L What’s the optimal keto level to lose weight and burn fat? The optimal level of ketosis is best measured by the concentration of ketone bodies in blood. When we restrict carbs, fast, or exercise intensely for several hours, ketone bodies are produced by the liver from fatty acids and used by our body and brain for energy. Ketone bodies consist of the water-soluble molecules acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB, popular in exogenous ketone products) and acetone. The sweet spot and optimal ketosis for weight loss is between 1-3 mmol/L. When I’m above 1 mmol/L, I start to feel the satiety effect keto is known for more clearly. It’s a strange feeling of clarity to be free of the “urge” to snack on something. Reaching the optimal ketone level for weight loss typically takes 2-3 days for me, but can be achieved within a single day with meals that are designed to not only support, but accelerate ketosis. How I measure my blood ketones affordably at home The best way I’ve found to measure my level of ketosis is a blood sugar and ketone level measuring device like the KetoSens Ketone Monitor Kit. This is the one I use to measure my ketone and blood glucose levels. I’ve also tried the Precision Xtra Blood Glucose and Ketone Monitoring System and the KETO-MOJO system, but prefer the KetoSens for convenience, price, and the fact that it needs less blood to get a reading and wastes less of the expensive ketone strips. A kit for blood glucose and ketone measurement can be obtained for $40-50 or 36-45 € - I paid $40 (38€) for my kit, and it came with 10 keto measurement strips and a lancet (Count Dracula’s tool for medical-grade finger tip poking for the blood). The single use keto strips fed into the blood ketone measurement device are typically model-specific and tend to be a bit pricey when bought in small batches - I’ve found they can cost up to $1 or 1€ each in boxes of 10! In my experience, this is hardly enough when starting out. A week’s worth of measurements can cost $7-20 or 6-18 € if I’m doing an experiment, so to save a bit of money, I’ve ordered these in larger packs of 50 keto strips and 50 lancets. There are also breath analyzers like the Swedish Ketonix device, that you essentially exhale into for a breath ketone reading. I’ve tried the Ketonix and met their team members at Biohacker Summit. The tech is really cool, and allows for unlimited measurements throughout the day at no extra cost, eg. after every meal if you wish (no strips, no needles!). I love the fact that it’s non-invasive and doesn’t require you to poke a small needle through your finger for a drop of blood. However, since it relies on measuring exhaled ketones in the breath, namely acetone, I’ve found it isn’t as useful for me as blood ketone measurements, which are the medical-grade gold standard. Furthermore, comparing breath and blood ketone levels is complicated as the Ketonix team points out. Referencing and comparing my data with other people and clinical studies is more straightforward with blood measurement devices, since these are used by studies and lots of folks doing these n=1 measurements. You can also use the urine strips to measure your ketone levels. These reagent strips for urinalysis are originally made for diabetics, so you can find them in pharmacies everywhere for roughly $10 or 10 € for 100 strips. I’ve used the Bayer Ketostix that are widely available in pharmacies in the US and Europe. After soaking a strip in urine, you get a rough estimate of your ketone levels, indicated by the changing color on the tip. Determining exact ketone levels with these is almost impossible, so I rarely use them anymore. They’re cheap but not ideal because of their low reliability, especially when you’re just entering ketosis and are at or around 0.5-2 mmol/L. And frankly, I don’t enjoy peeing on measurement strips that much.
The difference between keto-compatible and keto-accelerating meals? With the right meals, it’s possible to get into ketosis faster than with normal ketogenic meals. The optimal mix of premium fats and medium chain triglycerides or MCTs that are rapidly turned into ketones by the liver without requiring the actions of bile and rapidly promote ketogenesis in humans. This is exactly what we designed Ambronite Keto Meal Shake to do: make it easy for everyone to start and reach optimal ketosis for weight loss, fat burning, and experience all keto health benefits faster than with any other meal, without giving up on convenience and great taste. Typically, just one or two 400-calorie Keto Meal Shakes are enough to get me into the beneficial ketosis zone where I can also feel the benefits. A medium-carb or low-carb evening meal (which can also be a Keto Meal Shake for even faster results) and a Keto Meal Shake breakfast later, you will be in ketosis. Most people who prefer keto for shedding extra fat appreciate the freedom from hunger and cravings it provides, and spend most of their time between with their blood ketones in the 1-3 mmol/L range. I tend to lose weight fast when I’m on keto. This means it’s not optimal to be in keto for weeks at a time when I’m aiming to build muscle, endurance and speed. Personally, I’ve done some cyclical keto weeks (1-5 days of keto at a time, followed by a few days of refeeding) as part of my current mountaineering-focused strength and endurance goals, as I’m not looking to lose too much weight right now (and that seems to happen unintentionally when I’m on keto). With that said, let’s get down to the experiment: Zero to Keto in 16 hours: Arno’s experiment, meals and blood measurements How fast is it possible to get into ketosis without stressing out? Arno did a short keto experiment with blood measurements with Keto Meal Shake Chocolate using my KetoSens device for blood ketone measurements. Here’s his account on getting into ketosis in less than 24 hours, without exercise or any real prep, a few days ago: Evening before keto day
20:00 “A “Big Ass Salad” for dinner, much like described above; avocado with some cherry tomatoes, a handful of almonds and a salad with greens and veggies like spinach with some tasty extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar. I also added some Feta cheese and topped it with sea salt and pepper. The meal contained approximately 20 grams of carbs.” Ketones at 0 hours: 0.0 mmol/L
Morning of keto day
08:00 “The next morning after waking up I poked my finger with the lancet and measured a 0.5 mmol/L level of ketones in my blood, using the KetoSens device described above.” Ketones at 12 hours: 0.5 mmol/L “I enjoyed an Ambronite Keto Meal Shake Chocolate for breakfast.” 12:00 “Around lunch time, 4 hours after eating the Keto Meal Shake breakfast, I measured my Ketones again and the device showed a 0.7 mmol/L result. -- I was already in ketosis!” Ketones at 16 hours: 0.7 mmol/L
“I have to say being in ketosis feels great. Not only because I know that my body is literally burning fat for energy, but also because of the mental clarity which increases work productivity significantly. The metaphor of fat-metabolism and ketosis being like driving a Tesla while carb metabolism is more like driving an old gas engine Ford definitely feels true. Also, what holds true is the satiety effect and the craving-stopping effect. It feels like I have more willpower against food or treats once I get into ketosis.“
This was the first 16 h of the Zero to Keto experiment. Arno’s results are roughly the same as mine, even though he’s noticeably leaner (my current body fat % is well over 20% right now after a season of heavy lifting). A lady in her 30’s or someone with more body fat or less muscle might expect similar results after a few more hours due differences in basal metabolic rate to the lower muscle-to-bodyweight ratio. I’ll keep following Arno’s keto measurements and sharing the results with you. As always, these experiments are n=1 experiments - we’re not doctors, this is not medical advice - and we simply want to share our real experiences and results as we create new useful things for you guys. For me, personally, the biggest benefit of the Keto Meal Shake Chocolate so far has been that I have to think less about keto meals, especially in the morning. It’s not that I didn’t have tasty real food keto meal options before - but often these are not as fast, easy or affordable as I’d like, and tend to be a bit heavy on dairy and meat for many people and occasions. According to my own measurements, my time from zero to keto with one or two of these shakes is now down to 16 hours - roughly the same as Arno, and what other users are reporting. Over to you: what would you like to know about starting keto? What’s your go-to keto breakfast? Article written by Simo Suoheimo

Hot spots for those who want to run away from the winter
A few hot destinations for those who want to flee the winter. Tenerife, Canary Archipelago | The highest average temperature in March: 23 ° C.   Home freezes the waters and you are in Tenerife at the beach, on this island where nature keeps the footsteps of endless lava waves, now covering them with beautiful laurel forests, and Teide National Park is where to rinse your eyes with all that while you wear your boots. Take in turn how many of the cities and mountain villages here (Vilaflor, Teno Alto, Arico Nuevo the Etetera), admire them from the 18th century, taste all of the dishes and, if possible, sit at talk to the people there. Krabi, Thailand | The highest average temperature in March: 34 ° C    If you're only half a day on the plane and if you're still not paying a bargain on it, do the madness right and enjoy the Krabi for at least two weeks. So, after you arrived at the airport and wiped your shoes out of the last snowstorms at home, say to yourself "Let me be, here I can go to exactly 154 islands if I have chef ". You will also be surprised at how cheap the meridians can be here. And if it's not enough, take a walk along the beach, take a massage for about an hour at the price of 5 euros and maybe at the end of the vacation when you pull the line, you realize, maybe not that you went out on the plus , but you certainly do not feel that bad.

Crete, Greece The highest average temperature in March: 18 ° C   Too many reproaches you can not bring to Greece when it comes to holiday and vacation holidays - abounds in islands, beaches, nature, culture and all the cutlery. We have tilted the balance in favor of the largest island - Crete - for March. Unlike other Greek cities that are accustomed to winter holidays, Heraklion (the largest on the island) has no thoughts of laziness. Once the temptation of the existed with the seafront hours, you have time to study the history of the place, take Archeology Museum, Knossos Palace, Saint Mina Cathedral and Venetian walls and visit Rethimno, about 70 and a few miles from Heraklion. Dubai, United Arab Emirates | The highest average temperature in March: 30 ° C    Before you do any business in Dubai, show off to the Sheikh Mohammed Center in Bur Dubai and find out all you need to know about local culture. Why? Imagine just how different it is from what you do and that, perhaps so far, the greatest amount of information about the subject you have in the movie Clone. Then overwhelm the overwhelming malls and make your way to one of the local markets. When you start hunger, tell yourself that you have only two choices: break a salary at one of the luxury restaurants, or choose bakery and confectionery at the corner of the street, also loaded with food that you do not have at home anyway. Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam | The highest average temperature in March: 34 ° C   How could you get to the largest city in Vietnam without wanting to know everything about the tumultuous history when the "Vietnam War" seems an expression we still hear from the cradle. Ho Chi Minh is famous for many things, and markets (loaded with about 3,000 stalls), negotiation culture, and motorcycles will jump in your eyes. It is estimated that, within the city limits, there will be 8.4 million souls living together with the 7.4 million motorcycles that belong to them. Algarve, Portugal | The highest average temperature in March: 28 ° C   Close your eyes and mix the delicious Mediterranean delicacies of fish and seafood with bacalaureus. Imaginary. Then think that it can not be too difficult for the appetite to grow itself in the salty air, soaked by the scent of roasting sea life. And when you look at the plate with the translucency of the Portuguese wine glass, you want to extend your free days in the Algarve.

So, Your Twitter Account Is Suspended. Why? And Now What?
“Your Twitter account has been suspended.”
DA DA DAAA!
NO ONE wants to hear that… like, EVER… 😱🤪
Yet, with Twitter continuously changing the Twitter Rulebook (and, by the way, it’s YOUR, Twitter user’s, responsibility to stay on top of those changes!), it’s nearly impossible to keep your Twitter account squeaky clean.
I know exactly how you feel. I had not one, but several Twitter accounts suspended at one point or another.
Full disclosure though: some of my Twitter account suspensions didn’t exactly come as a surprise… I knew I was playing with fire! 😉🔥👌
You can learn more about why a few of my Twitter accounts were suspended in my best Twitter tools post.
Whether you knew you were breaking Twitter rules that got your Twitter account suspended or not (that’s between you and you! 😉 ), let’s take a look at
several common cases of why Twitter accounts get suspended,
what (if anything) you can do to get your account back,
what to do to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
Wait, where were we? I’m so distracted… 😳 🤪
When using ANY third-party platform (Twitter, Facebook, SlideShare, Medium, whatever), your goal is to bring people you engage with back to your site as quickly (but spam-free-ly!!!) as possible, then build those relationships on your own turf and terms.
If you do want to share the same post across multiple profiles, or to repeat it on your own profile, Twitter recommends that you retweet your original post.
Buuuuut… not too much 😅, because 👇
Another way to get into trouble with Twitter and get your account suspended is:
Read How to Manage Twitter Like a Pro [Your Daily Twitter Routine] to…well, learn how to manage Twitter like a pro 😉 !
If Twitter suspects you are running one of those Twitter spam rings 😲😲😲, they will lock your account (remove it from follower counts, Retweets, and likes) and require you to verify account ownership with a phone number or email address.

Mid-year Update on Our Five Creator Priorities for 2018
Friday, July 20, 2018
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> Dear YouTube Creators, <div style="text-align: left;"> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="vertical-align: baseline;">It’s hard to believe we’re already halfway through 2018. With 1.9 billion logged-in users coming to YouTube each month, our community continues to grow. More and more creators are building their businesses and discovering that they can shape the global conversation with just a phone and an internet connection. While mobile is one of the most popular ways fans enjoy content, more and more people are using their living room screens to watch their favorite creators. On average, users now watch over<span style="font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> <span style="font-family: inherit; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">180 million hours of YouTube on TV screens <span style="font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">every day.<span style="font-family: "arial"; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> <span style="font-family: "arial"; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">
While the future is full of opportunity, it is not without challenges. One of the ways we make YouTube better is through testing and iterations, but we understand that sudden changes related to experiments are difficult to manage. So, in order to minimize the disruption for you, we will make our best effort to communicate with you as these tests approach and we’ll use your feedback to make the features better in the long run.  And now, here is an update on my five key priorities for 2018:
1. Transparency and Communication
We continue to prioritize communicating more with creators. We made a conscious effort to respond on social media, and we answered 600% more tweets through our official handles (@TeamYouTube, @YTCreators and @YouTube) in 2018 than in 2017 and grew our reach by 30% in the past few months. We’ve also built a new feature than enables us to deliver relevant information in YouTube Studio, formerly Creator Studio.  In February, we began testing a new dashboard with a small group of creators, and we recently rolled out it out to all creators on the platform. The dashboard, which launched for all English channels and will soon be available in an additional 76 languages in the next two weeks, now gives you platform updates and news along with performance about your latest videos in one easy-to-find place. Last year, I started my own channel with the goal of communicating more with creators and saw first-hand some of the challenges and opportunities of sharing my voice through video. Today, I’m posting a new video, along with this blog, updating you on the five key annual priorities. Additionally, Creator Insider, an unofficial channel started by YouTube employees, continues to offer weekly updates, responds to concerns, such as notifications, and provides a more behind-the-scenes look at some of our product launches. And most recently, we combined our Creator Academy and YouTube Creators channels, so that you can find both inspiration and education in one place: YouTube Creators.

2. Supporting your success
This year at VidCon we shared some exciting new products designed to grow and strengthen our communities and give you more ways to earn revenue in addition to ads, including:
Channel Memberships - Viewers pay a monthly recurring fee of $4.99 to get unique badges, new emojis, Members-only posts in the Community tab, and access to unique custom perks offered by creators, such as exclusive livestreams, extra videos, or shout-outs. We worked with a small group of creators to develop this service and are expanding it to eligible channels with more than 100,000 subscribers and even more creators in the coming months.
Merch - We’ve joined forces with Teespring so creators can choose from over 20 merchandise items to customize and sell via a shelf on their channel. This is available to all eligible U.S.-based channels with over 10,000 subscribers, with expanded merchandising partners and availability for creators coming soon.
Famebit - Acquired by Google in 2016, FameBit has been helping brands tap into YouTube's audience by using creator's authentic voices to develop unique branded content at scale. Over half of channels that used Famebit in the first three months of 2018 doubled their YouTube revenue. In the coming months, we’ll be launching a feature that will allow users to easily shop for products, apps or tickets directly from the creator watch page.
In addition to new products, we continue to invest in YouTube Originals as another way to help creators earn more revenue. Well over two-thirds of our Originals star YouTubers both in front of and behind the camera, and since we launched Originals three years ago, we’ve seen their success have a ripple effect on creators. Some creators have seen as much as a 20 percent increase in channel viewership after their Original has launched. Finally, one of my biggest priorities is to show advertisers the incredible opportunities on YouTube to tap into engaged communities and extend their reach.  We’ve been working hard on brand safety and meeting with the biggest brands in the world to share your incredible stories and the progress we’re making together. The results have been positive, and I continue to make this a priority.
3. Giving people more ways to engage
One of the greatest strengths of the platform is enabling two-way conversations between creators and fans and fans to fans. We’ve been working hard to build out the different ways to enable interactions on YouTube and seeing results. Our overall interactions, such as likes, comments and chats, grew by more than 60% year over year.  Our Community Tab continues to be a one-stop shop for growing and engaging with fans. Visible across the platform, these posts let you move beyond just video to build even deeper connections with fans through GIFs, pics, polls, and text. Every day, over sixty million users click into or engage with Community posts. Livestreaming continues to be an area of growth for creators, with watchtime of livestreams increasing by 10X over the last three years. At VidCon, we launched Premieres to help creators take advantage of the popularity of live tools, such as Super Chat and scheduling, by allowing them to debut pre-recorded videos as a live moment on YouTube. We’re also seeing more creators use Stories, a simple way of posting videos without editing or post-production, to engage with their fans as well. We have some key improvements coming soon and later this year, we will expand stories to all eligible creators with more than ten thousand subscribers.
4. Tightening and enforcing our policies
Earlier this year, we released the first YouTube Community Guidelines Enforcement Report and we’ll be updating this regularly with new data. We just released the newest update in late June, which you can read here. We also announced our new Copyright Match tool, which uses the matching power of Content ID to help creators find copies of your content when it’s been uploaded by other channels. This will be offered to all creators, including those who are not part of a multi-channel network (MCN). We’ve been testing this tool with a thousand creators over the last year to tailor it to your specific needs and is a great complement to the range of copyright tools we provide.
5. Learning and education
Education is one of the greatest benefits of YouTube. Everyday, people watch learning-related content over a billion times and they’re using it to develop new skills and encourage their passions. I’m proud to announce a new initiative, YouTube Learning, through which we’re providing grants and promotion to support education focused creator content, expert organizations and learners. We're also expanding our learning content team efforts and have a newly dedicated product and engineering team working on building out features for learning on YouTube. Our hope is to support those who use YouTube to share their knowledge with the world and the millions of users who come to our platform to learn.
Looking forward
As our devices have become an increasingly important part of our lives, we want to support digital wellbeing. When we rolled out the YouTube Kids app, we included a timer that parents could use to limit the time their children spent in the app. We have since realized that a timer could also be helpful for adults. So, within the broader YouTube app, we’ve launched a feature that sends users a reminder to take a break. We’ve also added an option for users to get a single digest notification once per day from YouTube rather than at the moment notifications, and we enabled users to configure their notifications so that they happen within specific timeframes. As we head into the second half of the year, I look forward to continuing to work with you to create communities and engage with people using video. You are building the next generation of media companies, and I’m humbled by the amazing work you do every day. Susan Wojcicki CEO of YouTube

Helping creators protect their content

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> We know how frustrating it is when your content is uploaded to other channels without your permission and how time consuming it can be to manually search for these re-uploads. We currently provide a <a href="https://support.google.com/youtube/topic/2676339?&ref_topic=6151248" target="_blank">number of ways for copyright owners to protect their work, but we’ve heard from creators that we should do more and we agree. Today we are excited to announce the new Copyright Match tool, which is designed to find re-uploads of your content on other channels. Here’s how it works: after you upload a video, YouTube will scan other videos uploaded to YouTube to see if any of them are the same or very similar. When there is a match, it will appear in the “matches” tab in the tool and you can decide what to do next. VidCon 2018: Helping creators earn more money and build stronger communities
Thursday, June 21, 2018
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <i>Cross-posted from the <a href="https://youtube.googleblog.com/2018/06/vidcon-2018-helping-creators-earn-more.html" target="_blank">Official YouTube Blog I just stepped off the stage at VidCon, a conference created from scratch by Hank and John Green in 2010 that brings together fans, creators, and industry leaders to celebrate the power of online video. I talked about how over the last 13 years, YouTube has grown from an ambitious idea into a worldwide movement built on free expression and the power of openness. With more than 1.9 billion logged-in users who come to YouTube every month and localized versions stretching across 90 countries and 80 languages, we’re opening up the world to anyone with a cell phone and an internet connection. YouTube is a vibrant community where everyone has a voice. Every day, creators use their voice to entertain, spur action and bring about positive change. That’s why over the last year we’ve doubled down on building the products and tools that the creator community needs. Not only to thrive on YouTube, but to continue to develop the video platform of the future. <b> <h3 style="text-align: left;"> <b>The next big steps for creator monetization <b> YouTube lets creators connect with their community and gives them the opportunity to earn money while doing what they love. Merchandise Merchandise has been a part of many creators’ businesses for a long time. We want to make it easier for more creators to sell merch directly from their channel. This will be available to all eligible U.S.-based channels with over 10,000 subscribers starting today, and we plan to bring even more merchandising partners and creators in soon. Just take a look at Joshua Slice’s merchandise shelf. The creator of Lucas the Spider recently turned his hero character into a plushie selling over 60,000 furry friends and generating over $1 million in profit in just 18 days, according to Teespring.

Introducing Premieres
The engagement between fans and creators is at the heart of YouTube. We’re working on new ways to help creators strengthen those unique bonds. Livestreams have brought the YouTube community together during the biggest music, science, and gaming events. We’ve also built a Community Tab that allows creators to move beyond just video to build even deeper connections with fans through GIFs, pics, polls, and text. And we’ve started experimenting with our take on Stories, but designed specifically for YouTube creators—coming to all eligible creators with more than 10,000 subscribers later this year. Today, we’re introducing a new way for creators to upload content to YouTube called Premieres. With Premieres, creators will be able to debut pre-recorded videos as a live moment. When creators choose to release a Premiere, we’ll automatically create a public landing page to build anticipation and hype up new content. When all fans show up to watch the premiere, they’ll be able to chat with each other (and with the creator!) in real time via live chat. It’s as if a creator’s entire community is in one theater together watching their latest upload.
youtube
Premieres also unlocks new revenue streams. For the first time, creators can use Super Chat on traditional YouTube uploads and take advantage of Channel Memberships perks that were previously only available on Live videos. Premieres are starting to roll out to creators today and will be available broadly soon. If you want to experience one for yourself, check out some upcoming premieres from creators such as Leroy Sanchez, JacksFilms, Jackson Bird, and Ari Fitz, with more Premieres coming from Corridor Digital and Inanna Sarkis soon. YouTube creators are the heartbeat of our platform. That’s why we’re committed to building products that empower and support the creator community. We hope these tools help creators build a stronger community and earn more money while doing it, because when they succeed, the entire YouTube community thrives. An Update on Our 2018 Priorities
Tuesday, April 17, 2018
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> Dear YouTube Creators, At the beginning of the year, I wrote a letter to you outlining five key priorities for YouTube in 2018. Among those priorities was to communicate more frequently with all of you, and in that spirit, I plan to share updates with the creator community every quarter. As you can imagine, the last two weeks have been incredibly difficult for the people who work at YouTube, myself included. As challenging as the experience has been for our YouTube family, the outpouring of support and kindness from creators has bolstered our spirits and reminded us why this work is so important. We know the last year has not been easy for many of you. But we’re committed to listening and using your feedback to help YouTube thrive. Our community continues to grow at a healthy, responsible rate. Over the last year, channels earning five figures annually grew more than 35 percent, while channels earning six figures annually grew more than 40 percent. While we’re proud of this progress, I know we have more work to do. <b>1. Transparency and Communication At the beginning of the year, we committed to communicate more with all of you through social media. This year, we increased our replies 600 percent and improved our reply rate by 75 percent to tweets addressed across our official handles: @TeamYouTube, @YTCreators, and @YouTube. We've also more than doubled the number of creators receiving personalized update emails. We’re communicating in unofficial ways too, like <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGg-UqjRgzhYDPJMr-9HXCg" target="_blank">Creator Insider, an employee-run channel that offers behind-the-scenes information about things we are working on. The YouTube leadership team has also made it a priority to connect with YouTube audiences across the globe. At SXSW, Lyor Cohen, Global Head of Music, delivered a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcucwGNqL3g" target="_blank">speech about his life serving artists and the role YouTube plays for them today and in the future. Robert Kyncl, our Chief Business Officer, sat down with <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycuMyyqBWQY&feature=youtu.be" target="_blank">Casey Neistat and later took questions from YouTube Creator <a href="https://youtu.be/7IRmgFbCXe0" target="_blank">Noor Stars. This is just the beginning. <b>2. Supporting your success When it comes to creators, supporting your growth and success is incredibly important to me and my entire team. In February, we made the tough decision to set a new eligibility criteria to monetize on YouTube. While we know some creators found this change frustrating, it strengthened advertiser confidence, making monetization and the broader community on YouTube stronger for creators building their business on the platform. For those who have not yet met the new threshold, keep creating and building your audience. We have resources to help you learn and grow. We’ve also heard from you that delays in the application process are frustrating. We are working to make this faster. We know that it’s frustrating when the <a href="https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/7561938" target="_blank">monetization icon changes back-and-forth between green and yellow. In February, we released an update to our systems to improve overall accuracy and significantly decrease icon flip-flopping by 90 percent. Hopefully, many of you have already noticed this. On our side, we’re seeing that the volume of monetization appeals is down 50 percent as a result. Many of you have said you’re willing to provide more feedback on what’s in your video if it meant you didn’t have to worry about false-positives in our monetization system. This month, we’re launching a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2fdB8TNGmI" target="_blank">pilot with a small set of creators to test a new video upload flow that will ask creators to provide specific information about what’s in their video as it relates to our advertiser-friendly guidelines. In an ideal world, we’ll eventually get to a state where creators across the platform are able to accurately represent what’s in their videos so that their insights, combined with those of our algorithmic classifiers and human reviewers, will make the monetization process much smoother with fewer false positive demonetizations. Creators have also told us they want more alternatives to make money beyond ads. We recently <a href="https://youtube-creators.googleblog.com/2017/09/a-new-way-to-earn-money-with-youtube.html" target="_blank">began testing sponsorships with a limited set of creators. This lets fans set up recurring sponsorships that can help fund their favorite creators. Many sponsored creators saw substantial increases in their overall YouTube revenue, so we plan to expand this to many more creators in the coming months. <b>3. Tightening and enforcing our policies One of the biggest challenges we face is balancing the freedom of expression with our responsibility as a community. We value the incredible diversity of voices on our platform and want to focus our policy changes on where we believe there can be real harm. In February, we announced <a href="https://youtube-creators.googleblog.com/2018/02/preventing-harm-to-broader-youtube.html" target="_blank">new steps, beyond our existing strikes system, that we may take in the rare event that one creator’s actions risk harming the entire community. Our goal is to strengthen the community, and we hope to rarely use these new steps. We’ve heard great creator feedback on how we can address abuse on the platform, especially when it comes to comments and spam. Through new comment <a href="https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/111870?hl=en" target="_blank">moderation tools, we’ve given creators the power to review comments before they’re public. We’ve seen more than a 75 percent drop in comment flags on the channels that have enabled it, and we’re soon planning to expand this to 10 languages. We’ve done the same for live chat, allowing creators to hold inappropriate live chat messages for review in all languages. <b>5. Learning and education YouTube is an incredible force for good, particularly when it comes to education. This month, we saw the power of learning on YouTube through the hashtag #YouTubeTaughtMe. For instance, a dad in New York said he used YouTube to both bake a cake and study for his paramedic exams while a number of creators tweeted that YouTube helped them to feel more comfortable being their true selves. Finally, we’re working to make sure that our free educational resources, including the <a href="https://creatoracademy.youtube.com/page/welcome" target="_blank">Creator Academy, are focused on the topics of most interest to you. We launched a Creator Academy Master Class about <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qu8tgCb5jYM&list=PLpjK416fmKwQ_BhjfzuCdas9R_VcDA2JQ" target="_blank">creator burnout, and we're hosting a talk at <a href="http://vidcon.com/creator/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwqsHWBRDsARIsALPWMEP7oLNOoH_BUATsdxKuYwpA4nOJVVCjso2peYGx2BNciws7z0W_HRYaArE8EALw_wcB" target="_blank">VidCon on ways creators can maintain well-being. We’re also working on other courses for early summer to encourage wellness. <b>Looking forward Every day I am inspired by the power of the YouTube community--and your support over the last two weeks has reinforced that. Our entire team is committed to your success and your input informs every step we take. Please continue to let us know what we can do better. Susan Wojcicki
Dear YouTube Creators, At the beginning of the year, I wrote a letter to you outlining five key priorities for YouTube in 2018. 1. We’re communicating in unofficial ways too, like Creator Insider, an employee-run channel that offers behind-the-scenes information about things we are working on. The YouTube leadership team has also made it a priority to connect with YouTube audiences across the globe. At SXSW, Lyor Cohen, Global Head of Music, delivered a speech about his life serving artists and the role YouTube plays for them today and in the future. Robert Kyncl, our Chief Business Officer, sat down with Casey Neistat and later took questions from YouTube Creator Noor Stars. This is just the beginning. 2. We know that it’s frustrating when the monetization icon changes back-and-forth between green and yellow. This month, we’re launching a pilot with a small set of creators to test a new video upload flow that will ask creators to provide specific information about what’s in their video as it relates to our advertiser-friendly guidelines. We recently began testing sponsorships with a limited set of creators. This lets fans set up recurring sponsorships that can help fund their favorite creators. Many sponsored creators saw substantial increases in their overall YouTube revenue, so we plan to expand this to many more creators in the coming months. 3. Giving people more ways to engage We know that engaging with your fans is important, so we’re working on new tools to encourage the conversation.
We expanded Community to many more creators, and we’ve been fine tuning how and to whom posts are distributed across your Home and Subscribers feed. We’ve greatly improved ranking and targeting to make sure we are showing the right posts to the right users at the right time.
We updated live streaming features to make it easier to go live and interact with your fans. We added live chat replays, automatic captions and location tags, and we expanded Super Chats to include an IFTTT (If This, Then That) function.
We also launched YouTube Go in over 140 countries. This is a version of the YouTube app built for the next billion users and designed for people in places with poor Internet connectivity or expensive cellular data.
4. Tightening and enforcing our policies One of the biggest challenges we face is balancing the freedom of expression with our responsibility as a community. We value the incredible diversity of voices on our platform and want to focus our policy changes on where we believe there can be real harm. YouTube Space Dubai: A new home for creators in the Middle East and North Africa
Tuesday, March 20, 2018
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">Creators are the heartbeat of YouTube. They make it the platform where more than one billion people around the world come to laugh, learn, and think. Over the past few years we watched as Arabic content on YouTube evolved to span hundreds of channels followed by millions of people. This transformation was spearheaded by a diverse and growing community made up of creators from almost every corner in the Middle East and North Africa region. Today, I am proud to announce that this community now has a new home in the YouTube Space at Dubai Studio City, a facility dedicated to them and all their production needs. <div style="text-align: center;"><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody> <tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img height="367" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Ur8W3ft8Dns5SLNsdY5ZlDDFgEdHSbraKFAf2pvEIAukhmdit8PdqiJ6UECHF1SZ49JMnRnrGqOH7RaKGVrUkExtPiMEHSudyuh4X_qr8h7ESCi-6mKlSBnB4aQgEhrXaJcByB92" style="border: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; transform: rotate(0rad);" width="550" /> <tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i style="font-size: medium;"><a href="https://www.youtube.com/user/Lowinazal" target="_blank">Lowi Sahi, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgtQ-oP9ulDNf2Ja0-fNB7w" target="_blank">Maha Jaafar, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChOPyo-uWLVi5uO53mSBX-w" target="_blank">Noor Naem, and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/user/omarfaroo8" target="_blank">Omar Farouq during a panel moderated by Head of YouTube Partnerships in MENA Diana Baddar
One of the things we’re proudest of at YouTube is that this is a platform where experiments are born. Some fail to take off, and some move on to position themselves to be part of popular culture such Saudi wives making hilarious sketches about everyday life or powerful social experiments that tell important stories. This appetite to experiment with new formats of storytelling and narratives is something we want to support, and the Space is our way of celebrating this creativity. The Spaces program is designed to have something to offer all creators. Channels just starting out on YouTube with more than 1,000 subscribers will be welcome to sit in on workshops and events we will be holding at the Space. Creators that passed the 10,000 subscriber mark will be able to book the Space’s studios and production equipment.
The common area at YouTube Space Dubai
YouTube Space Dubai is the 10th Space in the world after London, Tokyo, Los Angeles, New York, Mumbai, Toronto, Paris, Berlin, and Sao Paulo. Since the first Space opened in 2012, we’ve had more than 400,000 people visit us to attend events, workshops, or to make their videos. The Space comes at an important time for the Arab world as it experiences an increase in the number of channels uploading from MENA countries by 160% in the past three years. Today, there are over 30,000 channels with more than 10,000 subscribers. Another big indicator of how far we’ve come is the fact that there are now more than 200 channels in MENA that crossed the million subscriber mark, with 1 in every 4 creator channel being female-led. Five years ago, MENA had less than five million-subscriber channels, and we’re just beginning to scratch the surface. Over the next couple of months, slots will be limited while we work with creators to study the needs of the local community to best provide the programmes and tools and ensure we provide the best support we can to our visitors. Creators will be able to book their production slots by early June. To all the creators out there, start thinking of what your next video is going to be about. You might just shoot it at the YouTube Space at Dubai Studio City where we look forward to welcoming you and your ideas. Posted by Dana Baddar, YouTube Space Dubai Manager.

Making It Easier to Go Live
Tuesday, March 20, 2018
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> Today we're making it easier to go live and interact with your community from your computer and phone. First, if you’ve ever tried to set up a live stream from your computer using an <a href="https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2907883?hl=en" target="_blank">encoder, you know there can be a few steps involved. Today, we’re making the process as easy as a couple of clicks. Just head over to <a href="https://youtube.com/webcam" target="_blank">youtube.com/webcam or click on “Go live” in the YouTube header to start your stream. You don’t need any additional streaming software or extra set up. Creators who tested early versions have been using it for live <a href="https://youtu.be/ICfpZcyIa7U?t=20s" target="_blank">beauty tutorials, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZ0AQNesWD4" target="_blank">fan updates and <a href="https://youtu.be/aig4jSKN6Ic?t=32s" target="_blank">product reviews. We also want to make streaming from your phone just as easy too. In the coming months, you’ll be able to start a live stream directly from the camera app in select devices from Asus, LG, Motorola, Nokia and Samsung. Our goal is to bring this feature to even more device manufacturers throughout the year through the new YouTube Mobile Live deep link. So whether you want to hold a mini concert, teach snowboarding or celebrate a milestone with fans, these tools will make it easier to share and interact with your community live. YouTube Studio: Better Insights, New Metrics & Faster Access to News
Wednesday, March 7, 2018
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> One of the most important tools for creators is the Creator Studio: the hub where you upload videos, manage your channel, and grow your community. In June of last year we announced a new beta version, renamed YouTube Studio. Hundreds of thousands of creators have been using the beta and providing invaluable feedback, which we've been implementing to make YouTube Studio a more efficient, empowering and enjoyable tool for you. Over the coming weeks, we’ll begin to make YouTube Studio the default experience for many creators (but will still give you the option to go back to Creator Studio Classic if you want to). YouTube Studio’s most anticipated features include three new metrics that will give you better understanding of how your videos perform, and an all new Dashboard that shows you personalized news and information for your channel. <b>New ways for creators to understand their reach on YouTube Moving forward, you’ll see three new metrics in YouTube Analytics – Impressions, Impressions click-through rate, and Unique Viewers – that give a deeper understanding of your reach on YouTube. These new metrics are rolling out to a small group of creators today and will be available to everyone in YouTube Studio within a few weeks. A couple of weeks after that they will be available in Creator Studio Classic. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><img height="299" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/G-iWLl3WxqTdqC6VEU-keQ3bCrftkv2rbHpnZ3h2TwFxEsmHcT6mnqEdARZQgmWUMfPrfVluqChi6-jLrReY2oGuBzuDIZxNjsRz3JCJDBaiqYrGsewdWsPCo0rFDJEMvDSU066l" style="border: none; transform: rotate(0rad);" width="624" />
Impressions An Impression is counted when a viewer on YouTube sees one of your video thumbnails. Impressions tell you the potential reach of your content on YouTube, since each impression is an opportunity to earn a view.
It’s important to note that the impression metric only reflects impressions generated by your thumbnails on YouTube, including thumbnails on the homepage, subscription feed, search, and “up next” section. This help center article describes in detail what is and isn’t included in the impressions metric. Impressions click-through rate We’re also adding Impressions click-through rate, which shows you the percentage of your impressions on YouTube that turned into views. Different factors affect your click-through rate. For example, effective thumbnails and titles that attract your target audience may drive this rate up. This metric can help you make more informed decisions on how to optimize your titles and thumbnails, especially when you look at how this metric changes between past videos. For more best practices, we recommend you read this help center article. Unique viewers Unique viewers shows the estimated number of different people who watch your videos over a period of time. Whether they watch on desktop, mobile phone or watched more than one of your videos, that person will count as one unique viewer. You can use this data to compare your audience size to your subscriber base, and identify videos that helped reach a wider audience. This information can also help guide your content strategy, and showcase your true reach when discussing brand deals and sponsorships.
We encourage you to check out our Creator Insider Video, Creator Academy lesson and help center articles for additional tips on how to use these metrics. Introducing the YouTube Studio Dashboard You’ve asked us for a “one stop shop” for data, insights and news so you don't have to spend time searching for it. The new dashboard will now provide a snapshot of your latest upload, personalized recommendations, and instant access to news.
What you'll see:
Video Snapshot: You'll get a snapshot of how your newest video is performing compared to your previous uploads over the same time period. Previously, you had to pull this data from multiple sources and calculate it on your own.
Personalized Recommendations: Here we'll surface Creator Academy content based on the specific needs of your channel. In the future we’ll also help you understand why certain videos perform better than others so you can adapt your plans for future videos.
News: You shouldn’t have to search for the news; it should come to you. With this feature, you’ll get the latest updates from across YouTube so you can easily stay up to speed on everything that affects the creator community.
The Dashboard will roll out to all channels over the next couple of weeks and we’ll continue to add more content based on your feedback. We're dedicated to making YouTube one of the best places for creators and hope these new features help make that possible. Ryanair to cancel 40-50 flights per day
Image copyright AFP
Ryanair is to cancel 40 to 50 flights every day for the next six weeks, in a bid to improve punctuality of flights.
The budget Irish-based airline announced the plan on Friday, saying that it was “unacceptable” that its punctuality had fallen below 80% in the first half of this month.
It also said it had to clear a backlog of staff leave by the end of the year.
The move could affect up to 285,000 passengers, who will be offered alternative flights or refunds.
Ryanair said that less than 2% of its flights would be cancelled and the move would help it hit its annual punctuality target of 90%.
But passengers have complained about the short notice of the cancellations.

Gary Cummings was due to fly from Leeds to Bratislava on Friday morning.
On Thursday night he received a text message from Ryanair, saying his flight had been cancelled.
The only alternative flight he was offered was on Monday – when he was originally due to be returning to Leeds.
“We were left in limbo really,” he told BBC Radio 5 live.

But customers do have rights under the European Passenger Rights legislation.
“The rules say if the airline doesn’t have a suitable alternative flight, you have to be booked on a rival airline,” said Simon Calder, travel editor of the Independent.
He said passengers should also be able to claim compensation for the cancellations.
“It’s a really odd thing in terms of customer care, to say we want to improve the operation by keeping more planes on the ground,” he told the BBC.
Analysis: An ‘affordable risk’
By Joe Lynam, BBC business correspondent
Ryanair made a profit of €1.32bn (£1.16bn) last year after it carried 120 million passengers.
So it can afford to risk annoying up to 400,000 of its customers by suddenly cancelling hundreds of flights at short notice.
It’s not the first time that a large company has changed how holidays are allocated to staff, but it’s probably the first time for a giant airline that such changes have discommoded so many paying customers.
Ryanair hopes that it can minimise the reputational and financial cost until it gets to the end of October when fewer flights will be in the skies anyway.
In the meantime passengers are urged to check what their compensation rights might be under EU261 rules.

Ryanair has advised customers that flights will be operating as scheduled unless passengers have received a cancellation email.
“By cancelling less than 2% of our flying programme over the next six weeks, until our winter schedule starts in early November, we can improve the operational resilience of our schedules and restore punctuality to our annualised target of 90%,” Ryanair’s Robin Kiely said.
The statement added that the airline was in a transition period to move the holiday year for its staff from April to March, to January to December.
EU compensation rules for cancelled flights
Passengers are entitled to assistance and compensation, if the disruption was within an airline’s control
Airlines have to offer full refunds, paid within seven days, or rebookings for a flight cancelled at short notice
In addition, passengers can also claim compensation
Cancellation amounts are: 250 euros (£218) for short-haul, 440 euros (£384) for medium-haul and 600 euros (£523) for long-haul
Passengers who reach their destination more than three hours late can be compensated from 200 to 600 euros, depending on the length of flights and delay
