Gandalf: *murmuring* Sixty years the ring lay quiet in Bilbo's keeping prolonging his life delaying old age. But no longer, Frodo. Evil is stirring in Mordor. The ring has awoken. It's heard its master's call.
Frodo: *aghast* But he was destroyed! Sauron was destroyed!
Gandalf: No, Frodo. The spirit of Sauron endured. His life force is bound to the ring and the ring survived. Sauron has returned. His orcs have mutliplied. His Fortress of Barad-dûr is rebuilt in the land of Mordor. Sauron needs only this ring to cover all the lands in a second darkness. He is seeking it ... Seeking it ... All his thought is bent on it ... and the ring yearns over all else to return to the hand of its master. They are one, the ring and the Dark Lord.
Somewhere in Barad-dûr:
Sauron: *kicking orcs left and right* Useless creatures, find MY WEDDING RING NOW!!!!!!!!!

3, 12, and 21 for Gimli
Oh fun! I've not thought too much on Gimli so this was an interesting exorcise <3
3. Obscure headcanon
You know, I don't know that I have an obscure headcanon. Is him and Boromir being bro's obscure? Because I headcanon the crap out of that.
I'll readily say that I absolutely adore Gimli, more-so in the books than in the films, but I've not spent much time with him as a writer so I don't have too, too many head canons with him. And, more importantly to this question, I've not spent much time in his fandom corner so I'm not sure what's obscure and what isn't.
I head-cannon that he doesn't cleave as closely to certain traditions as other dwarves and that's caused some strife in the family. Lots of sense of guilt on his part and hurt/wounding on the part of his parents and relatives.
12. Crack headcanon
Boy heard the Ring doing it's Ring thing and told it to "Get Fucked" and somehow the Gold Lust never really hit him. So like, the ring just didn't work on him. It thought it had an in, since he's a dwarf and the ring is as presumptuous as its master, but Gimli was like "ach nae, fuck off" and the ring was like "??????"
Boromir: it burrows its way in, you know?
Gimli: so I've heard.
Sam: .. ... you've never heard it calling?
Gimli: Aye. Once. And I told it that I thought its father was a shite ridden sheep and that it was nothing more than a dime store trinket and it should go on its way. It's not bothered me since.
Gimli: just tell it that it has no power over you. it's simple.
Aragorn: no.
Aragorn: no. it's not that simple.
Gimli: sure it is. Just tell it to get right fucked.
[Later]
Aragorn: new strategy, Gandalf. We just get everyone to demean the ring and tell it we think it's nothing but a piece of shit and that it sucks.
Gandalf: /sighs/ you've been talking to Gimli, haven't you?
21. Drink of choice (not just alcoholic)
Ale brewed with heather! It's got a nice herbal quality and depth of taste that I think Gimli would like.
Oh, I do headcanon him as being a phenomincally good brewmaster. He's got the gift for it and knows how to taste ale and beer and can tell you exactly what is in it and where half the ingredients originate.
Gimli: Rye from southeast of the Entwash, grown likely near a deciduous forest, and fermented consistently at a cool temperature between four to eight feet below ground.
Eomer: How can you tell???
Gimli: how it tastes. Also the casks were previously used for brandy-wine, but that's obvious so I didn't think it worthy of mentioning. Your weird traitor witch creature over there also added some oak chips to this brew here alongside...mugwort, mandrake and with that fuck is that fly agaric? What the fuck are you trying to do with this ale?
Grima: get high, see visions, do crimes.
Gimli: ... ... .alright then.
Gimli:
Gimli: no one drink from this barrel. The witch traitor did funky things to it.
Grima: dwarves brew with heather!!
Gimli: sure, but we're not adding anything else to the mix. Gods.
------
Thank you!!! <3 <3 <3

Tale of Shail
Ch 1: Will You Join Us?
Thorin Oakensheild and his twelve dwarves traveled to the Shire to recruit their fourteenth member, Master Baggins. An alleged burglar, spoken so highly of by Gandalf the Gray. The simple hobbit was plucked from his comfy and safe dwelling to embark on a journey and reclaim a lost kingdom. Traveling on horseback, the company took the eastern road. The wind blew across the treetops making the leaves dance. Gandalf rode enjoying the peaceful pace. "Ah good old Toby, care for some my dear Bilbo?" offering his pipe to the hobbit. Bilbo graciously declined the offer as the group came to a sudden halt. Gandalf pulled on his reins calling up to Thorin, "Why are we stopping now?"
Ignoring the wizard's question, Thorin commanded "Dwalin, Fili, follow me. The rest of you stay here until we return!" Thorin turned back to the path ahead, eyeing a distant sign of trouble. The remaining company, although confused, obeyed their king's order. Kili was not as easily swayed. While the others kept to themselves, Kili instead began to gallop towards the three.
"Thorin, what's this all about then? Our travel has already been delayed by that buttoned up halfing. Now we're wasting time; chasing squirrels and striking every brushing bush." Dwalin grumbled.
Thorin answered while pointing to the sky "Best our travel be delayed than ambushed. Look." His finger followed the trail down showing its origin. "Be on guard, nothing is safe out here." Thorin warned. Dismounting their ponies, the three walked the grounds seeing an open fire with a hen roasting on a spit. Kili secured his pony next to Fili's. He hid behind shrubs. Fili heard the rustling, turning back all he saw were four horses, nothing unusual. Wait, four? Fili rubbed his eyes then held his growling stomach. He was starting to get hungry and the delicious smell of something roasting wasn't helping. Concluding that he must be seeing things, Fili returned to his uncle.
Thorin found a full pack amongst the campground. Going through it, he pulled out a pouch with a boar symbol embroidered into the leather "This is from the Iron Hill…" He observed the surroundings. A single tent was pitched. Hanging from a line was a couple of wet tunics. Handing the pouch over to Dwalin, Thorin went to inspect the shelter. The tent's cloth consisted mostly of flimsy patchwork. Pulling back the flap, Thorin peeked in. Inside laid out a tattered sleeping bag, a pile of dirty dented tin dishes, and a pair of black disheveled boots flopped over in the corner.
Dwalin carefully searched through the sack. Flipping it upside down he violently shook out its contents. A sharpening kit, steel pegs, wooden hammer, glass bottles, and small miscellaneous items. Finding nothing of interest Dwalin dropped the sack. He went on exploring the campground.
Over the campfire was a small chicken roasting on a spit. Fili, smacking his lips, followed the scent of cooking meat. The juices dripped, sizzling on the flames. Fili went to pull off a drumstick when he noticed a large weapon leaning against the tree. He squinted to identify an emblem, a boar? Just then A hand grabbed his shoulder. "AHH!" The prince screamed in shock. Turning around Fili saw his younger brother.
Pieces of foliage were in Kili's hair and clothes. Whipping them off his face dropped from a grin to flushed embarrassment and guilt. He shushed Fili, afraid of being reprimanded by Thorin. "Me shush? You shush!" Fili lowered his tone. Although he was irritated, he didn't want to attract his uncle's attention or the unknown camper. "By Durin, I could have carved you up, sneaking up on me like that. I-...what are you doing here? Uncle told you to stay back." He angrily whispered, even fearing Thorin's wrath for Kili's sake.
"My skills were no use back there; just tinkers and miners prepping for a snack. I would have cut the bread wrong. Besides, if the three of you found yourselves in trouble I would be here to save you." Kili argued his case.
"Ha! YOU save ME? Tell me, who helped you up onto your pony this morning?" Fili laughed, tussling his brother's hair. The two exchanged a few brotherly arm smacks and shoves. Fili wrestled Kili onto the ground. Too focused on the tussle, the brothers neglected their volume. Pinned to the ground Kili laughed, he then soon squealed as Fili snorted and hung a line of drool above his face. Kili closed his eyes and squirmed trying to break loose. When he opened his eyes, Kili saw a figure behind his brother darkened by the morning sun.
Grabbing the back of Fili's coat collar Dwalin yanked him off Kili. "What are you two idiots doing?!" Dwalin impatiently scolded the boys. "This is no place to be playing around."
"It was only a bit of fun mister Dwalin." Kili said, getting up.
Throin rejoins the now three dwarves."Kili! You were to stay back with the others." He scolded his nephew. Hearing a noise the hair on Thorin's neck stood up, "Let's get back, something isn't right."
"Let's go." Dwalin said as the three walked back to the horses.
Fili took the opportunity to nab up a new weapon. His boot stepped on a pile of leaves triggering a hidden net trap. Fili was swept up hanging in a tree. "Fili! Quick cut him down!" Thorin yelled running over, Kili and Dwalin each pulled out a knife sawing at the ropes.
Demounting from their steads, the company took a moment to stretch. Their limbs hurt from riding so many hours straight. Bombur took the opportunity to prepare a small snack; nobody opposed and even helped. Bofur hopped off his pony, heading to the bushes. Bilbo panicked as Bofur trailed off from the group "Where are you going? Thorin said to stay here." The hobbit interrogated.
"Don't worry, just gonna release a stream before I burst. Been holding it in since that last hill peak." he said, pushing through the low branches of a bush. Bilbo, appalled by the lack of manners, walked away with a scowl.
"Curse these dwarves. Contracted to embark on an allegedly dangerous and honorable journey, and what does it entail? Stopping for luncheon, naps under shady oak trees, chirp listening and cloud watching! To think, I turned my anxieties into courage only to be faced with pleasures of Shire in unknown woods. Ha! Perhaps this burgling business won't be so difficult after all. I should hope any forest creatures are politely mindful about sharing their berries and seeds. O-or bandits and rouges would be well versed in folklore to discuss great novels. And the great mountain dragon will be the gracious host of afternoon tea!" Bilbo's worry was making him delirious. The Gray Wizard noticed the hobbit's distressed spiraling. He chuckled to himself then approached the halfling to provide much needed comfort.
"Bilbo, my lad. You seem stressed by factors of your own conjuring. Why not stop and breathe? Look around and intake your new surroundings. I'm certain you've never witnessed russulas like these in the Shire before, have you?" Gandalf encouraged.
"Incredible. Any hobbit would be so ecstatic to come across such a fungi. They'd throw themselves down hills to snag a cap." Bilbo answered sarcastically. The wizard laughed at his friend's attitude, allowing Bilbo to lighten up and share a chuckle as well. "Joking aside, Gandalf, this is not what I expected of this quest. I'm not opposed to postponing sudden death at any turn. However, the prolonging of any unforeseen dangers is growing my paranoia. We are undoubtedly overdue for a mishap."
"Indeed we are." Gandalf agreed under his breath, looking out to the dark of the trees. He looked back to the uneasy hobbit "..And this isn't your first journey? Hahaha." The two shared a laugh again. "Come, Bilbo. Let us roam these grounds and clear our minds. We'll need them to be sharp for the well-read bandits you plan on running into." They wandered off, sparking some Old Tobey.
"Oh yeah…" Bofur sighed after relieving himself. Fixing himself, Bofur was ready to join the others when something caught his attention. Walking deeper into the woods, he found a stump housing a pile of fresh picked berries placed on a leaf. "Well, well look at this. Someone left Bofur a lil treat." The hungry dwarf popped one in his mouth. "Delicious! Odd it being here, but who am I to argue on an empty stomach." Picking up the leaf, Bofur took the snack to go. So enamored by the berries' juices, Bofur was too engaged in licking his fingers to notice a lurking presence. When Bofur turned to head back, the berries flew out of his hand from being startled. A hooded figure stood in front of him. "Where'd you come from? Sorry, were these yours?" He asked. Backing away slowly, Bofur bumped into the stump. He continued to walk backwards around the obstacle, still receiving no reply from the stranger. "Listen, just an honest mistake. I can go pick you some more!" He offered with a worrisome smile. A subtle sound below him drew his attention. Bofur looked down to see his foot in a hidden rope loop. "Uh oh." He said before being snagged by a snare trap. Bofur yelled as he was dragged across the ground up into a tree. His hat fell to the ground and Bofur hung upside down. "Y-you made this trap? Mighty talented! Hehe. H-hard to catch dwarves, being that we are sooooo hefty!" He awkwardly chuckled. His nervous smile shifted into a frown as the stranger approached. They drew out a dwarven dagger from behind their lower back. "Coming to cut me some slack, yeah? HehehehaaAAAHHH! BOMBUR! BIFUR! ANYBODY, HELP!"
With ears of a fox, Gloin heard Bofur's distant cries. He shushed his brother's ramblings to listen harder. The deaf dwarf didn't notice and continued to go on about directions. "So I believe we need to go to the end of this treeline until we hit these sharp looking pointy bits. Once we climb those ridges we'll be to the riverbend. Sure it looks wee bit spooky but it'll cut our commute in half. Right Gl-...Gloin?" The redhead had walked away.
Gloin gathered Nori, Bifur, Balin, and Dori to check out the commotion. "Probably got his member snagged to a thornbush" Gloin joked. The five, thinking nothing of the scenario, headed into the dense woods. Gloin, although, carried his ax.
"You plan on ending his misery by cutting it off?" Nori laughed as he gestured to the ax.
"Gotta be prepared. Always." Gloin explained. Ori agreed and with a heavy stick, joined behind his brothers. The two turned around and commanded him to stay. "I can help!" Ori pleaded
"Whatcha gonna do? Poke em?" Nori snickered. Dori smacked his arm and gently turned Ori around and guided him to walk back.
"You've got a very important responsibility here to watch over our resources. We'd be nothing without the supplies, and wouldn't last another day." Dori smiled then returned to the fleeting group.
"Watch over my 'tatoes. I like em warm, not burnt. Haha-OW!" Dori smacked Nori upside the head for teasing. The young dwarf huffed and threw the stick to the ground. He was too upset to pay attention where it landed and almost tripped. Ori sat in the company of the remaining two dwarves, Bombur sat silently cooking and eating while Oin was holding an entire conversation by himself. Ori sighed, he knew he was more skilled than this. Bombur offered him a biscuit, Ori took and ate it.
The group of five dwarves urgently followed the sounds of Bofur's yells as they became louder. Out from the bushes, Nori and Gloin charged with battle cries. Both halted when they came across the scene. Seeing Bofur hung while a stranger stood underneath, Nori ran over to attack. The sound of metal clanked as the two daggers met. The two struggled, using their body weights to shove the daggers closer. Breaking off, the stranger dodged Nori's attack. The mystery opponent tripped on their cloak, falling to the ground. Gloin grunted as he swung his ax, aiming for their face. The stranger rolled out of the way in time to avoid it. They sprung up to punch Nori and pivoted to sidekick Gloin's gut. Thrown off, both men dropped their weapons. As the others joined in, the stranger nabbed Gloin's ax. The dangerous tool was swung around frantically with skillful care. The company kept an open perimeter. "CUT ME LOOSE, FOR DURIN'S SAKE!" Bofur yelled. Balin evaded combat to get Bofur down. The stranger saw Balin's effort and chucked the ax at him. The throw just missed, the blade landing right behind the back of Balin's heel. Bofur yelped as his hat dropped down. It fell on Balin's head. The oldest dwarf grunted and threw it off to focus on the task at hand. The hat landed on the stranger's face, obscuring their vision. Bifur and Dori took the opportunity to restrain the assailant while they were blinded, each dwarf grabbing an arm. Bofur kicked and spun around trying to help Balin with his escape "I'm gonna be sick. I'm gonna be sick. I'm gonna be sick."
"Stay still laddie." Balin fussed with the mechanism's knot. It was anchored to a tree with rough bark, the friction helped to hold the contraption together. The stranger threw themselves backwards onto the ground, Dori and Bifur collided heads and released their holds. The stranger tossed Bofur's hat aside and charged at the oldest dwarf. However, the second their palms made light contact with Balin's shoulders, an unexpected force tackled them to the ground. They landed with a painful grunt as the wind was knocked out of them.
"No one attacks my brother!" Dwalin yelled, pinning down the culprit's wrists up to their ears. Their legs flailed less and less under Dwalin as they coughed. Yanking off the hood, Dwalin revealed a female dwarf. "Durin's name…what's this?" Instinctively, he yielded his strength and blushed. The giant brute was embarrassed for her, having to be on top of this poor lass.
"That dwarf there scared mah kill away!" She snarled, regaining a steady breath. The stranger had the same growly dialect as Dwalin and Gloin.
"What is going on here?" Thorin demanded to know as he approached, his nephews following right behind.
"She was going to stab Bofur." Gloin answered, rubbing his hurt stomach.
Thorin with a furrowed brow cut Bofur free. He dropped to the ground and let out a groan of pain. Bofur caught his breath, giving Thorin a thumbs up. Through gritted teeth, Thorin barked an order at Fili and Kili "Get him up." The two pulled Bofur to his feet and Kili handed his hat back. Thorin kneeled beside Dwalin to inspect the attacker and took out a dagger. He pressed the blade against her neck as he questioned her. "Is this true? You tried killing one of my dwarves?"
"No, I was gonna cut 'em loose, and have a friendly talk." She answered him with a sarcastic tone. Thorin put some pressure, not enough to draw blood but his patience was wearing thin. Sensing now is not the time for games, she composed herself. "I just need me rope back, I have no interest in you townies. Now can you let me up?" She asked, looking up at Dwalin. He turned to his king for an answer. The two exchanged no words, but with a single small nod Thorin gave Dwalin the okay to release her. Climbing off, Dwalin offered her a hand up. She took it resentfully and was pulled back onto her feet. She looked over the tarnished rope in frustration "Took me hours ta set that trap; I was gonna catch a stag this time 'round." She spoke out loud.
"You set all these traps yourself? What of the one back at the campsite?" Thorin interrogated. He began to piece together this stranger. She's alone and has been for quiet some time since her skills were immaculate yet scrappy.
"You set those off too?! Gilthok meIf! Haven't wasted enough of me supplies already!" She yelled out in aggravation. Salvaging what she could, the lass stormed off back towards her campsite. The dwarves, making sure she wasn't up to anything malicious, followed behind on the way back to their site.
Balin walked alongside Thorin to discuss more about the she-dwarf. Thorin huffed at his proposed notion. "Balin, you're considering asking that… wild lander to join my company?" Thorin asked defensively. "She started trouble with my company and had no qualms with killing one, under no threat too. We know nothing of her intentions being out here."
"All I am saying is the lass has a valuable set of skills, Thorin. Obviously she knows how to survive in the wild. And what do we have? Gloin, the fire maker?" He asked, both looking over at the disheveled Gloin still groaning in pain. "You know, as do I. We need all the help we can find" Balin reasoned. Thorin crossed his arms, snubbing the idea. Balin chuckled, giving Thorin's shoulder a pat."You leave it to me." He assured the king. As they approached the company's site, the dwarves tensed up. They were ready to brawl again if the newcomer were to do anything unpredictable to their supplies or other members. However, the stranger continued to walk ahead at full speed with no intention of stopping.
Ori used the big stick he tripped over to now draw in the dirt. He was just finishing the details of a lovely liatris sketch when suddenly a stomping foot ruined his work. "Hey!" He looked up to scowl at Nori, but it wasn't his brother. In fact, it was a dwarf he did not recognize. The figure was not engaged in his whine and marched forward. She was walking so intently to her campsite that she didn't notice, nor cared, that she stepped on Bombur's cooked sausages.
Balin, trying to save face, called out and tried to catch up as she walked away. "Tell me lass, what can I call you?"
Looking back at the white haired dwarf, she turned away and answered."I'm called Shail."
"Lovely name. Means "radiant" n' "warrior", very fitting. A lass like yourself in these lands must be off on a journey. Any thought of where you are going? Maybe to the Blue Mountains, or the Iron Hills in the north?" Balin questioned, trying to receive any information. Shail turned around impatiently and finally spoke to the dwarf.
"Nowhere specific. The better question is where are you all off to? The Blue Mountains are back thada way. And none of ya seem like Iron Hill natives. So if all thirteen of ya are traveling there, it must be for business. And ya won't get much business there without no merchandise to haggle. Wouldn't ya agree?" She mouthed off.
"Yes, I'd suppose" He answered taken aback by her abrasiveness. When she turned to walk away again, he knew he had to cut to the chase. The lass' attention was short. "Though that is not were we are heading. No, you see we are off to the Lonely Mountain." Balin informed.
Stopping in her tracks, Shail turned back for the last time and looked in disbelief at him. "I know of only one dwarf who'd think of traveling back to that mountain..." Looking at the stoic black haired dwarf, "Thorin Oakensheild son of Thrain?...So the stories are true." She whispered under her breath.
"Yes, they are." Thorin confirmed walking up to her. He wore a stern look, towering over her. "Most of these dwarves aren't as advanced in survival as you seem to be."
She looked over Thorin's right shoulder to see what characters were in her presence. Shail watched as Bilbo flinched at a horse fly. The strange soft creature blew air and waved the bug away "No shite. I'd say before nightfall you lose half of them. Sorry, I don't travel with townies anyway." She disclaimed with sass.
"Townies?" Kili asked from the back. Thorin looked to the nosey prince, giving his nephew a glare.
"Townies; the folks who live in large packs. All soft and fragile, afraid of messing up your locks." She degraded. "The lot of ya just don't fit in with the wild. At least it don't look that way…" She went to inspect the members one by one. "Here let's take a look at ya. Come here!" She said tugging at a few of them. The lot became a bit defensive, unsure what she was up to. Shail chuckled at their fear. "How well can ya see in the dark?" She asked, looking into Fili's eyes. Shail then used one hand to pry his eye open wider. The prince stepped back and rubbed the irritated area. Turning briskly, she yelled into Oin's trumpet,"What about yer HEARING!?" The old dwarf flinched and groaned at the verbal assault. "Know how ta handle a weapon? Do ya even have one?" She asked Ori. She rummaged through his bag and pulled out his slingshot. "Well this doesn't seem too handy." Tossing it back to him without care, she went on. Ori fumbled the item when caught then held it dearly. "What about hiding your musk? Let's have a smell." grabbing Dori, she took a whiff of his forearm. "Ugh, you smell just like a townie! You need a good mud bath." She said before being shooed away. "I don't come for free either. So what can the great Thorin Oak-en-sheild offer me?" She asked in a mocking tone.
"A portion of Erebor's riches shall be yours!" Balin promised. He went to retrieve a contract from his satchel.
Grabbing the paper, Shail skimmed over it. "So I'd get a bunch of shiny bits?" She asked. Giving a nod, Balin was halted by the abrupt laughter. "I don't need that useless stuff. So I guess you can't offer me anything." Shail went, shoving the parchment onto Balin's chest. "Have fun getting eaten up by that dragon." Parting through the company, a scent caught her attention. She turned to the very large ginger dwarf and asked "Is that a tasty smell?" Bombur held an iced pastry in one hand while nibbling on another. "Well you can give it here." She went to snatch it, but Fili got to the sweet first. He tossed it over to his uncle.
Catching it, Thorin changed the offer on the spot. "I can offer you three meals a day and these so-called 'tasties' whenever accessible." Walking up to her, Thorin waved the dessert cake in Shail's face. "Better to have a meal offered than to chase one down. So , do you say? Will you join us?" He asked.
Shail's eyes followed the treat. "Double my servings on the meals and tasties. I also get first pick on a sleeping area. And get me as close to the Iron Hills as ye can. There, we can part ways..." She counter offered, holding out a hand. The two shook on it. She was officially a part of the company. Snatching her sweet, Shail gave the king a coy grin and took a bite.
"There, Bilbo. You are in a much better state than before." Gandalf assured, cleaning out the burnt Old Tobey from his pipe. The hobbit nodded with a cheery grin.
"Yes. I think I just need to take a little walk and get away from all of that commotion. Now, I am relaxed, rejuvenated, and ready to contribute to this quest" He agreed. The content mood slowly dissolved as he approached the campsite. The dwarves were all packed up and began to move again. He wondered, would they have continued without the hobbit and wizard? Leaving them to fend for themselves stranded in the woods? Did they even notice the two were gone? The members rode past the hobbit, the only one to greet him back was Bofur.
"You all seem to be in such a rush just to be going the wrong way." Gandalf inquired as he looked to the direction he thought the map called for. He stood still while the company went by below him
"We have an unforeseen detour to take first." Thorin gruffed as he rode past the wizard.
"'Unforeseen?'" Bilbo asked, but the king did not answer.
"We have to stop by Shail's campsite to gather supplies." Balin explained riding away from the halfling. Bilbo stammered and was left in his tracks with no answers. The hobbit turned around in confusion and called out to anyone listening ahead of him.
"Whose Shail?" He yelled out.
"Keep yer voice down, you'll get us killed! Ya tryna let the wolves know that suppers' soon?" Shail warned as she rode past. The hobbit was damned. A lady dwarf. He was shocked by the vision in front of him. She did look the part as he had imagined but never thought he would ever witness one in his life. Shail cracked a knot on each side of her neck then spit on the ground. She was a dwarf alright.
"...Is she riding Mrytle?"

`This is the lawn of Parth Galen’ ...
... a fair place in the summer days of old. Let us hope that no evil has yet come here.'
They drew up their boats on the green banks, and beside them they made their camp. They set a watch, but had no sight nor sound of their enemies. If Gollum had contrived to follow them, he remained unseen and unheard. Nonetheless as the night wore on Aragorn grew uneasy, tossing often in his sleep and waking. In the small hours he got up and came to Frodo, whose turn it was to watch.
`Why are you waking? ' asked Frodo. `It is not your watch.'
`I do not know,' answered Aragorn; `but a shadow and a threat has been growing in my sleep. It would be well to draw your sword.'
`Why? ' said Frodo. `Are enemies at hand? '
`Let us see what Sting may show,' answered Aragorn.
Frodo then drew the elf-blade from its sheath. To his dismay the edges gleamed dimly in the night. `Orcs! ' he said. `Not very near, and yet too near, it seems.'
`I feared as much,' said Aragorn. `But maybe they are not on this side of the River. The light of Sting is faint, and it may point to no more than spies of Mordor roaming on the slopes of Amon Lhaw. I have never heard before of Orcs upon Amon Hen. Yet who knows what may happen in these evil days, now that Minas Tirith no longer holds secure the passages of Anduin. We must go warily tomorrow.'
The day came like fire and smoke. Low in the East there were black bars of cloud like the fumes of a great burning. The rising sun lit them from beneath with flames of murky red; but soon it climbed above them into a clear sky. The summit of Tol Brandir was tipped with gold. Frodo looked out eastward and gazed at the tall island. Its sides sprang sheer out of the running water. High up above the tall cliffs were steep slopes upon which trees climbed, mounting one head above another; and above them again were grey faces of inaccessible rock, crowned by a great spire of stone. Many birds were circling about it, but no sign of other living things could be seen.
When they had eaten, Aragorn called the Company together. `The day has come at last,' he said: 'the day of choice which we have long delayed. What shall now become of our Company that has travelled so far in fellowship? Shall we turn west with Boromir and go to the wars of Gondor; or turn east to the Fear and Shadow; or shall we break our fellowship and go this way and that as each may choose? Whatever we do must be done soon. We cannot long halt here. The enemy is on the eastern shore, we know; but I fear that the Orcs may already be on this side of the water.'
There was a long silence in which no one spoke or moved.
'Well, Frodo,' said Aragorn at last. `I fear that the burden is laid upon you. You are the Bearer appointed by the Council. Your own way you alone can choose. In this matter I cannot advise you. I am not Gandalf, and though I have tried to bear his part, I do not know what design or hope he had for this hour, if indeed he had any. Most likely it seems that if he were here now the choice would still wait on you. Such is your fate.'
Frodo did not answer at once. Then he spoke slowly. `I know that haste is needed, yet I cannot choose. The burden is heavy. Give me an hour longer, and I will speak. Let me be alone! '
Aragorn looked at him with kindly pity. `Very well, Frodo son of Drogo,' he said. `You shall have an hour, and you shall be alone. We will stay here for a while. But do not stray far or out of call.'
Frodo sat for a moment with his head bowed. Sam, who had been watching his master with great concern, shook his head and muttered: 'Plain as a pikestaff it is, but it's no good Sam Gamgee putting in his spoke just now.' ,
Presently Frodo got up and walked away; and Sam saw that while the others restrained themselves and did not stare at him, the eyes of Boromir followed Frodo intently, until he passed out of sight in the trees at the foot of Amon Hen.

Dreams into Reality
Summary: When trolls attack, what else should Tayler do rather than sacrifice the hobbit? Sacrifice herself because she knows how this scene plays out.

"I don't think the hobbit will join us," I hear Dwalin start to say, I roll my eyes at his words knowing full well there's already a wager and he was the one who thought the wee hobbit would be joining.
"Tay? Are you sure you don't want in on this wager?" Kili asks, I turn to look at the brunette Dwarf, shaking my head, "considering I know what will happen, I'd rather not wager and make you feel like I'm cheating," I explain to the dwarfling, laughing softly as he quickly tells Ori that the Hobbit will make it. With a roll of my eyes, I steer my pony to move up by the only blonde dwarf in the group, the friend I have already.
"How are you feeling?" His voice comes off soft and quiet, though not to let the others know, I smile at him softly, nodding my head, "I'm okay, it doesn't hurt as bad today, but if it does, I'll be sure to clean it."
He nodded at my words before grinning, looking at me, "so, you like to stare at my uncle while he sings?" I could hear the teasing in his voice, before I reach over, smacking his hand, "shut it. I didn't think anyone had noticed..."
"Oh, I noticed, myself and my brother noticed" Kili speaks from the other side of me, causing me to groan lightly, "I hate you both..." I whisper quickly moving to the head of the group. Trying to get away from the two brothers.
Settling next to Dwalin, chewing at my cheek, I turn to look at him for a moment, "I know you think I'm rather small, and that I might not have a lot of fight in me, but if you're okay with it, I would appreciate it if you could teach me more about fighting," I spoke to the intimidating Dwarf next to me. He glances over at me, raising a brow as he eyes me for a moment, "alright little bird," he spoke, his voice sounding unsure at first, "I'll teach you, but I won't be fair. I hope you know that."
I let out a small laugh, "I'm aware, and I hoped you wouldn't be," I told him, "otherwise I wouldn't learn," he couldn't help his own chuckle slip out, "you're alright little bird, I think you'll do just fine with these dwarfs" he spoke as he looked back ahead.
"Wait! Wait!" I turn to see Bilbo running after us, a grin on my face as Kili reaches to High five me, "I signed it," He hands the contract to Balin, who pulls his spectacle out and looks over the contract, "Everything appears to be in order. Welcome Master Baggins, to the company of Thorin Oakenshield.”
"Give him a pony" Thorin's deep voice could be heard from the front of the group, as light laughter fills through the dwarfs.
“No, no. That won't Be necessary. Thank you. I'm sure I can keep up on foot. I-I've done my fair share of walking holidays, you know? Even got as far as Frogmorton once. AHH," I laugh as I see Fili and Kili pick Bilbo up.
I find myself next to Gandalf and Bilbo as most of the Dwarves move ahead to talk amongst themselves, minus Kili, Fili, and Oin.
"Come on, Nori! Pay up!" Oin calls out, Nori tosses a sack of coins to him, earning a laugh from the older dwarf, "one more!" Fili calls, "thanks, lad!" "What's that about?" Bilbo asks turning to face Gandalf for a moment, "Oh, they took wagers on whether or not you'd turn up. Most of them bet that you wouldn't."
I let out a small chuckle as I hear Bilbo ask, "and what did you think?" "Well," his voice went soft as a sack of coins is tossed his way, "my dear fellow, I never doubted you for a second."
I quickly remember what's about to happen and I turn, pulling a handkerchief from my bag, and tossing it to bilbo as he sneezes, "you forgot yours, take mine instead," I spoke softly, "ah thank you, its the horse hair, having a reaction," he spoke, earning a few looks from certain Dwarves, "don't forget, I know somethings that go on.. remember?" I tease, before looking up at Bifur as I hear the tear in his shirt.
"I could've given the hobbit a piece of this, so the lady didn't have to give her’s up," he spoke earning a smile from me, "I appreciate it, Bifur, but I'll manage without a pocket handkerchief, as well as a good amount of many other things.”
"That will take some getting used to, someone else knowing the way of the future.”
“Unless it changes, dear Gandalf, sometimes, when you add a new story, the future changes."
"You are correct, Tayler, we shall see if anything else changes with your presence here."
After awhile of riding, Thorin finally lets us rest, causing us to finally relax, I took it upon myself to help feed the ponies with Bilbo, smiling as he sneaks Myrtle another apple, "who's a good girl?" he smiles before returning to glance around, making sure none of the dwarves were watching him.
"There's our little secret, Mytrle. You must tell no one. Shh, shh" he grinned as she started to eat the apple he gave her, I roll my eyes with a smile, "making friends are we?" I ask with a soft giggle, before jumping as I hear a screeching in the distance, I jump, turning around before taking a deep breath, already knowing what was about to happen.
“What was that?" The hobbit questions.
"Orcs." Kili replies looking up from his bow, "Orcs?" the hobbit runs towards the fire to get away from the edge, I roll my eyes knowing whats about to happen and I find my way to sit by Gandalf, chewing at my cheek.
"Throatcutters," Fili responds, "there'll be dozens of them out there. The lone-lands are crawling with them."
I shiver at Fili's wording despite having heard it before, but hearing it this close, it caused something to stir within me, fear? Probably.
"They'll strike in the wee small hours when everyone's asleep. Quick and quiet, no screams. Just lots of blood." The brothers turn and look at each other, chuckling under their breath.
"You think that's funny?" I mouth as Thorin speaks, causing Gandalf to nudge me with his elbow, the old wizard rolling his eyes.
“You think a night raid by Orcs is a joke?" He asked his nephews.
“We didn't mean anything by it," Kili explained to his uncles
"No you didn't."
With that, Thorin walks near the ponies, "you know nothing of the world," his voice goes quiet once he's overlooking the cliff that we were currently resting on, I chew at my cheek for a moment, before standing and going to Thorin, waiting for Balin to start his legendary tale, but it doesn't come, so i turn around, before chewing at my cheek.
"Don't mind him Kili," my voice starts soft, causing Balin to look at me with a grin, before he nods in agreement, "I'll let the newbie explain why Thorin has more cause than most to hate orcs," he spoke up before I felt all eyes on me.
I sighed softly, before sitting near the fire, the part of my cheek I had been chewing at was numb as I continued to chew at it, trying to find my words.
“After the dragon took the lonely mountain, King Thror tried to reclaim the ancient dwarf kingdom of Moria." I continued on with the story quietly, randomly glancing back at Thorin as I spoke, "Azog the defiler. The giant Gundabag orc had sworn to wipe out the line of Durin, but much of what he believed he could do, couldn't be done. Thrain, son of Thror, had disappeared shortly after King Thror had been beheaded, having been driven mad by grief. Whether he was killed or taken prisoner, no one knows. All the dwarves knew that day was that they were leaderless. Defeat and death were upon them."
“That was when I saw him. A young dwarf prince, facing down the pale orc. With nothing but an Oaken branch as a shield. Azog the defiler had learned that day, that the line of during would not be so easily broken." I smile as I turned back to the boys and continued speaking, "There was no feast... nor song was sung that night, for our dead were beyond the count of grief. We few had survived. And I thought to myself then... There is one who I could follow. There is one... I could call king."
Thorin turned back around to see the rest of the dwarves awake and standing up, along with myself and Gandalf.
Bilbo slowly stands up, just as thorin makes his way back to the fire, “and the pale orc?" Bilbo questioned, "what happened to him?" "He slunk back into the hole whence he came. That filth died of his wounds long ago." Bilbo turned to Gandalf just as Balin did, causing the old wizard to nod with a fake smile. Rolling my eyes, I stand up and head to walk where Thorin had come from, "I'll keep watch tonight, you men get some rest, we'll need it within these next few days. So, rest, I'll wake someone if I get tired."
I did not end up waking anyone after that night with the Orc talk, I stayed awake in fear of the Orcs finding us, I knew something was coming, but I couldn't remember what was coming, as I tried my hardest to remember.
"Here, Mr. Gandalf, can't you do something about this deluge?" Oin questioned the old wizard.
“It is raining, master dwarf, and it will continue to rain until the rain is done. If you wish to change the weather of the world, you should find yourself another wizard."
“Are there any? Other wizards?" I turn to Bilbo, "There are five altogether," I respond to the Hobbit, "Sauraman the white wizard, he's the greatest, then two blue wizards, their names are hardly ever mentioned, and then Radagast the brown, he tends to prefer the company of animals to others, though, I don't blame him" I grin earning a piece of bread thrown at me from Fili.
“We’ll camp here for the night, the ponies need rest,” Thorin spoke getting off his pony, “Fili, Kili look after the ponies, make sure you stay with them. Oin, Gloin, get a fire going." "right ya are" Oin responds .
"A farmer and his family used to live here" Gandalf speaks out.
I ignore Thorin's argument with Gandalf, but once I turn to find Fili, our eyes meet, and there's something in there that I couldn’t quite understand until Fili distracted me, "Hey, want to watch the ponies with us? It'll be fun, you can tell us about your world more." I nod, agreeing to go with, wincing slightly as he grabs my wrist, "shit, I'm sorry, Tay, I forgot," I shake my head gently, "It's okay," I speak gently. Before I follow behind him, grinning as I see Kili intently staring at the ponies.
"Come on Bombur, we're hungry." His voice rings through the trees.
Thorin's POV
I set my bedroll up as I wait for dinner to be done, relaxing as much as I could.
"Time to eat!" Bofur calls out before he starts to dish everyone's bowls up. "Here, do us a favor, take this to the lads and lassie,' Bofur hands Bilbo three bowls, "stop it, you've had plenty!" I let out a soft laugh as he his Bombur with the soup spoon, "Aye, it's not bad stew, Bombur." Gloin compliments. I watch as Bilbo takes Fili, Kili, and Tay their bowls of soup before getting my own.
I hear rushing through the tree and I quickly get my sword out, pointing it to where it was coming, until I see a flash of blonde hair and see my nephew bursting through the tree line, “T-Trolls a-and they have Tay.”
Before he could finish his sentence, I’m running towards where he came from, "Drop her!" Kili yells after he slices at one of the troll's ankles. I make everyone stay put to see how he handles himself.
"You wot?" I hear one troll ask.
"I said: Drop. Her!" Kili repeats himself, the one holding Tay quickly throws her towards my nephew, making her land on him.
"Whoa!" She squeaks, I rush forward with the others slicing at a troll's ankle seeing as Fili checks on her. I couldn’t show weakness, not now, not ever. It took everything in me, not until Erebor was back at least. Then I will let her know about Ones and how she was mine.
"Get the Sacks!" The trolls yell to each other as we fight them. From the corner of my eye, I see Bilbo setting the ponies free, along with Tay. I continue to fight until I hear trolls go quiet behind me and I turn to see one holding Tay tightly by her waist, and the other two holding Bilbo by his arms and legs.
"Bilbo!" Kili yells, "Tay!" Fili yells and goes to rush forward until I stop him, "NO!" I hold him back.
"Lay down yer arms or we'll rip his off!" The one troll, who you can tell is the leader states. Tay meets my eyes and I can see her shaking her head slightly, before I meet Bilbos, before throwing my weapon down, I feel both my nephews' eyes on me before they throw their weapons down too.
"Hot! Fuck this is hot!" I could hear Tay over the fire, I growl staring at the boys, before looking at the trolls.
"Don't bother cooking 'em. Let's just sit on 'em and squash 'em into jelly!" Tom, the tiny one of the trolls speaks.
"They should be saute'd and grilled with a hint sprinkle of sage" William states.
"That does sound quite nice" Tom adds.
"Never mind the seasoning. We ain't got all night. Dawn ain't far away. Let's get a move on. Don't fancy being turned to stone."
"Wait! You are making a terrible mistake."
Needless to say, Bilbo was an asset to the company, having distracted the Trolls long enough for Gandalf to save us, I get out of my sack and rushed for the fire where my future queen was, I help her down, checking her over for wounds.
“Thorin… Thorin I’m alright,” her voice draws me to meet her eyes, I quickly pull away, scoffing softly.
“I told you not to weigh us down, and look at what you did, you went and got yourself captured by stupid trolls and you-” before I could continue her eyes fill with anger, and I feel a sting against my cheek.
“I was saving your stupid pony, you wumpus ass! I was saving the ponies that got stolen because your nephews didn’t want to worry you by telling you what happened. They stomp, unlike me, who can sneak pretty quietly. The dagger I had was not enough to cut the troll's rope, and I dared not cut it with the sword, so I tried taking one of theirs and I got caught. Do not speak to me about weighing the company down when I was trying to help!'' Her voice, filled with anger, caught me off guard, the slap to the cheek causing me to hold my cheek gently before I pull away quickly, looking down at the human before me.
I went to say something until I hear whispers from behind me and I turn seeing a smirk on Kili and Fili’s faces before they drop once they notice me looking, and they quickly turn away looking over at Dwalin who is helping Bombur out of his sack. Turning my attention to the small woman in front of me, "we'll talk about this later," I state before turning back to take count of everyone before turning to Gandalf
“Where did you go?” I questioned the older wizard.
“To look ahead,” he replied, earning a small scoff from the girl behind me, making me smirk with a chuckle from Dwalin.
“And what made you come back?” “Looking back,” the old wizard chuckled softly.
“The trolls can’t travel in the day, they must have a cave nearby, we should go check it out,” a small voice offers behind me, I turn towards her, before nodding gently, “let's go, she has a point” I spoke out before everyone started walking, I move and walk with them quickly until I hear Fili.
“Are you okay? How's your arm? Your leg?”
“I’m fine Fili, I swear, I’ll be okay, just shush please…” her voice was small as she spoke, causing me to wonder what exactly my nephew knew. "How about your hand lassie?" Bofur questioned, earning a small growl from me before he quickly stopped the question and walked near his brothers.
I walked alongside Gandalf as we made my way to find the troll's cave, “there's something you're hiding about her, I know it, speak Gandalf,” he only shook his head, “it's not my business to speak of, if she wishes to tell you she will,” I growled before walking ahead, I will get the information from someone, I know Fili won't tell me, but if Kili knew he would tell me. I hoped.
After finding the troll’s cave, we found quite a few weapons that would come in handy, I make my way out of the cave to see Fili handing Tay another dagger, silent whispers among them as she only nodded, “I promise I won't Fili, I'll come to you if I need,” was all I heard until we heard someone rushing towards us.
I held my sword up, along with the other dwarves, as someone came towards us, I saw Kili and Fili quickly gather around Tay, their weapons up to protect her, at least I knew someone could protect her for now, until I got close.

“Enter the Day” by Patrick Wolf
DV:
The most fascinating thing about "Enter the Day" isn't how it fits into Patrick Wolf's previous oeveure - I'd place it somewhere between the hard-earned, comfortable lushness of Lupercalia and the back-to-basics approach of Sundark and Riverlight - but how much it doesn't fit into the musical landscape of 2022. It's immaculate, carefully produced, feeling both sparse and lush at once. The track is constructed from the piano, psaltery, rustic percussion, and space - reverb and silence are characters here too. The inhale and exhale that Wolf takes before the first note lasts less than a second, but it's a stunning one. It centers the entire song on him, as a performer but also as a person. It's a sort of intimacy and directness that we've heard other bands spend an entire album failing to recreate: no less artificial than anything else put to tape and released, but the kind of lie that tells a truth. "Enter the Day" is as vulnerable as any eulogy could hope to be, and as openhearted.
MG:
Listen, I love batshit electronic music as much as the next person. I love when music sounds hard, rotten, awful. But I also feel like it’s a tiny miracle to have a song like “Enter the Day” at a time when hard feels like the default setting. Patrick Wolf is a master of patience, spaciousness, and craft. His work isn’t necessarily straightforwardly beautiful -- he takes pains to wrench certain words from his mouth, almost sounding like an attempt at singing like Gandalf. But even these slightly strange choices feel precious and serve to highlight the spectacular whole. Similarly, the hum of the psaltery is pure tension against the lush, twinkling piano, like seeing electric wires against the night sky. “Enter the Day” is evocation at its best, calling to our higher selves and beseeching our imaginations to lead the way.

Hey I have a question. I want to see Amazon burn and to do anything in my power to hasten that end.
Would dropping negative reviews of RoP help at all? Or will that just make them think I’ve watched the show and add that to the count? I know they were deleting negative reviews off IMBD but idk if spamming stuff like that would help
If you’re not sure could you tag some blogs you think would be able to answer?
Tysm!!
Hi, thanks for the ask!
Leaving negative reviews is certainly what Amazon deserves. But yeah, like you said, they’re probably counting numbers of views, and they’re also just deleting any negative reviews they receive because they’re cowards. We’re probably not going to win the battle over reviews, as much as I hate to say it. Amazon’s too afraid of admitting how unpopular their show is.
In terms of how to hasten Amazon’s demise: it’s hard to know how to end Amazon, but there are always small things you can do, and if enough of us do them, it will make a difference.
Boycott Amazon entirely
Boycotting Amazon is a good first step, but it’s also great to encourage other people in your life to find alternatives to Amazon as well. If you search online for “alternatives to Amazon” you can come up with a lot of good options. I think many people who have become dependent on Amazon don’t know what else is out there. I’ve found that by having that information on hand I’ve been able to recommend alternatives that people didn’t know about.
Spread the word
I also think it’s good to spread the word about Amazon’s unethical practices among people you know. For instance, my mom reads the news a lot and is very well-informed, but she hadn’t heard about the recent Amazon worker deaths and the OSHA investigation into them. When I told her about it, she was shocked that this wasn’t bigger news. I think it’s really important to spread the word about these things because not everyone hears about them in the midst of their busy lives, and I wouldn’t underestimate the power of these stories to change people’s minds about using Amazon.
Here is an extensive list that I have compiled of many of Amazon’s crimes and abuses.
Support anti-Amazon legislation
Another thing you can do is call your representatives to support legislation that hurts Amazon, like this bill that already passed that Amazon was opposed to. It doesn’t do enough to reign in Amazon, but it’s something. And it’s good to support calls like this one to investigate Amazon’s unethical labor practices. I live in the United States, so my examples are from here, but I’m sure there are legislative efforts in other countries as well. I would recommend calling for this kind of legislation, too, if it doesn’t already exist where you live. In general, legislation can help fight Amazon if it supports union activities, protects workers’ rights, demands a livable wage, and forces the wealthy to pay their taxes.
And I think all these things fit together, too. If, for instance, enough outrage builds against Amazon for its unethical labor practices, that can help drum up support for legislation to hold Amazon accountable. But that means people need to be aware of it, and talking about it. One of the most insidious aspects of Amazon is how it’s become a “normal” part of so many people’s everyday lives. It shouldn’t be. We have to un-normalize it. Fight Amazon wherever and whenever possible.
Anyone who wants to add onto this post with ways to stand up to Amazon, please do.
I leave you with some wisdom from Gandalf:
“It is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till.”
#asks#I'd like to do more to hurt Amazon too#I'd like to be involved in a more organized fashion#but working full time gets in the way of that#I figure that one thing I am good at is writing and research#so I've used those skills to collect information about Amazon and spread it#and to talk to people I know about it#Amazon#my writing

TCATC Chap. 14; Travel through Mirkwood
*Author’s note*
Now this was certainly an interesting chapter to write because I really tried to get the strain of dark madness magic that’s affected Mirkwood and have it be affect Hela as well without her realizing it, in case if anything’s unclear, the next chapter will hopefully clear the air as to why a random fight scene is added here. Hope you enjoy this chapter and the next chapter after that my dears.
NEXT CHAPTER HERE

_____________________________________________________
We rode over the hills of the Wilderland and within several hours we finally reached the forests of Mirkwood. The woods I once saw as a child that was filled with lush green leaves during the summer, and in the autumn it’s beauty could rival that of Rivendell’s autumn glow. But since the start of the 3rd Age, the forest has greatly changed and not for the better.
The trees were barren of even a single lush green leaf, and the trunks sucked of any rich nutrients. The whole forest had fallen sick and had an aurora of darkness about it. Gandalf got off his horse and together the two of us walked and stood at the Elven gate.
Any leaves that were there had been dried and left there to rot on the ground like an infected wound. Dried up vines twisted over the stone statues, including over the very figurine of Thranduil’s beloved Queen, Calen.
“The Elven gate.” Gandalf softly spoke.
“It’s a shame of how greatly this once lush forest has fallen.” I said to Gandalf in Elvish.
“Yes. Especially after Thranduil’s wife was lost to him. She was the caretaker of this forest and all its creatures.” Gandalf said back to me in Elvish. He turned to the company and said, “Here lies our path through Mirkwood.”
“No sign of the orcs. We have luck on our side.” Dwalin said as he unmounted himself from his pony followed by the rest. Gandalf and I looked outward and saw on top of a cliff Beorn in his bear form.
“Set the ponies loose. Let them return to their master.” Gandalf told the company. He walked further into the gate and I heard Bilbo say as he walked up to me.
“This forest feels—sick. As if a disease lies upon it.”
“Yes Bilbo. This forest has greatly suffered through this pass Age. If Cersei were to see what became of this once greenwood forest, she would be heartbroken. For she helped forge the Greenwood to be as grand as it once was when Oropher first settled here.”
“Is there nothing you could do to heal this forest? I mean, you-you do have your sister’s elemental magic after all.” Bilbo asked me.
“Yes. However to heal this entire forest would drain every ounce of my strength. Even if I could help heal this forest I do not have the strength to do so. Remember back at the Misty mountains? And that was just with one tree alone.” He looked down solemnly remembering that night when we first ran into Azog. I patted his back comfortingly.
“Well if Hela’s healing magic is out of the question, is there no way around?”
I do not blame Bilbo’s hesitance for entering this forest. For the sickness is oozing out a dark energy that was even making me hesitant to walk through. I could hear the trees creaking and groaning and dark whispers echoing through the darkness.
“Not unless we go 200 miles north or twice that distance south.” Gandalf told Bilbo as he stepped further into the Elven gate. I looked into the forest and could hear the whispers growing louder, some were even calling my name. My mind went fuzzy as they kept saying my name along with some words I could barely make out.
“Hela? Hela?!” I snapped out of my daze to see Fili at my side. “Are you alright?”
“Yeah. Yes Fili I’m fine.” I said with a tight smile. He looked at me skeptically before returning back to Kili and gathering his weapons. I walked over to the brothers and said to Fili. “You should really teach me how to hide that many weapons on my person. I still don’t understand how you’ve managed to do it.”
“It’s a gift.” Fili said with a cocky shrug and a playful grin.
“Mother always called him her little arsenal hoarder. She still hasn’t forgiven you for sneaking a dagger on you when we were barely old enough to wield a sword much less a dagger.” Kili said with a laugh.
“I always say you can never be too prepared. And on a quest like this, it’s better to be prepared for anything. And I’ll be willing to teach you about what weapons you could manage to hide, if you’re ever interested Hela.” Fili said.
“I’d be honored.” I said with a bow of my head.
“Not my horse! I need it!” Gandalf suddenly exclaimed as he raced over to the horse that Nori was starting to unsaddle.
“You’re not leaving us?” Bilbo said incredulously.
“I would not do this unless I had to.” Gandalf said to Bilbo.
“Gandalf what’s the meaning of this where are you going?” I asked him.
“Questions need answering, answers that I cannot find here.”
“Then let me go with you.”
“No! You pledged by blood to protect this company and you shall fulfill that pledge till the end. They’re going to need you, especially through this forest. Stay with them and don’t you dare leave them.” He ordered me. The look in his eyes held a slight fear in them, almost as if what he was going to search for may in fact be what I fear to be true deep down.
“Very well Gandalf. Just be safe old friend.” I gave him a kiss on the cheek for luck and protection before entering the gate. As Bilbo and Gandalf quietly spoke to one another I noticed how Bilbo’s been fiddling with his pocket a lot more than I’ve seen. Just what exactly was this Hobbit fiddling with so carefully?
“I’ll be waiting for you at the overlook, before the slopes of Erebor. Keep the map and key safe. Do not enter that mountain without me.” Gandalf told the dwarves and at his last statement, he drilled it into Thorin’s mind. As Gandalf stood by his horse he warned the company, “This is not the Greenwood of Old. There is a stream in the woods that carries a dark enchantment. Do not touch the water. Cross only by the stone bridge. The very air in the forest is heavy with illusion it’ll seek to enter your mind and lead you astray.”
“Lead us astray? What does that mean?” Bilbo repeated Gandalf’s warning.
“Hela’s Celestial magic will be your guiding light, so long as you keep sight of her she will not let you fade. She will keep you on the path and make sure you don’t leave it. Because if you do, you’ll never find it again.” Gandalf spoke as he mounted his horse. He urged his horse to turn and with one final warning, he rode off. “No matter what may come, stay with Hela on the Path!”
“Come on. We must reach the mountain before the sun sets of Durin’s Day. Hela, lead us on.” Thorin said as he walked through his company and into the forest. I nodded and they all followed behind me. Not a single one of them racing on ahead of lagging behind me as we entered the forests of Mirkwood.
The sun was now gone from our sights due to the trees and leaves shielding us from it’s warmth and guiding light.
So now it was up to my tracking skills to find the path through touch. I brushed the dead leaves with my foot and felt around to see which way the path would turn for the leaves would disguise themselves on the ground like the path to lead us astray.
“Path turns this way.” I told them. We went left and walked up a slight hill that lead us down in a winding, curvy trail alongside the bigger trees of the forest. Dwalin began to feel the ground with his axe and he said as he heard a clunk of rick against his axe.
“This way.”
“No not that way. It’s a fools path.” I told him.
“A fools path? What do you mean?” asked Thorin.
“Thranduil began to grow suspicious of travelers shortly after the passing of his Queen. So he had some of his elves create a fool’s path to confuse intruders in his realm. To better sure the safety of his people.”
“Then how do we know we’ve been going the right way?” Dwalin asked suspiciously.
“To most you can’t tell which rocks lead to the real path or a fool’s path. That’s why I’ve kept low to the ground at every corner turn. There’s a different texture of rock. The fool’s path feels slightly bumpier than the stones that guide us on the real path.” Thorin nodded and told everyone to go right instead of left.
“Air, I need air.” Bofur said.
“My head, it’s swimming.” Oin also complained too.
“I know, I know. But the quicker we get through the path, the quicker we’ll be out of this forest my friends.” I told them.
I knew the dark magic of this forest was starting to affect them, I wouldn’t want to tell them this but it was also starting to get to me too. The dark magic within this forest isn’t your average dark magic, this is something—far more powerful. Just like Radagast said, this is a dark and terrible magic. And it was almost like it was trying to call out to me for I kept hearing voices whispering my name every now and again.
After a little more walking we finally came to the bridge that Gandalf told us about. However the bridge had been destroyed long ago which left us at a disadvantage. Now if I recall there was once a boat docked nearby but it was now gone, where could it have gone to?
“We found the bridge.” Kili announced to the company.
“Bridge.” Bofur repeated. We all came to the edge of the bridge and Bofur suggested. “We could try and swim it.”
“Didn’t you hear what Gandalf said? A dark magic lies upon this forest. The waters of this stream are enchanted.” Thorin said.
“Doesn’t look very enchanting to me.” Bofur grumbled.
“Not all enchantments are beautiful Bofur.” I informed him as I looked down into the dead waters of the stream before us.
“We must find another way across.” Thorin stated.
“There used to be a boat here last time I ventured through here. But—now it’s just gone. Maybe they took it downstream or—”
“We won’t have time Hela, we must find a way to cross now.” Thorin told me.
“Hey, what about these?” Kili spoke up. We all looked to see a bunch of thick, strong vines surrounding the lake. Some of them curved down and dove into the water, while others twisted and contorted around each other creating a swing. “These vines look strong enough.” Kili was just about to go onto the first vine when Thorin stopped him.
“Kili!” Kili and the others turned to their king as he said. “We send the lightest first.” And that’s when everyone turned to Bilbo.
“Send me first.” I said.
“Hela—” Thorin started but I told him.
“I may not look it but Celestials are light on their feet. In fact we’ve been known to be just as light as any Elf in Middle Earth. Able to walk on top of snow and some of us like Cersei were able to walk along the very waters of Middle Earth. Please Thorin allow me to go first. At least that way I’ll be able to help anyone out who may need it when you come to the other side.” The dwarf king turned to me and then to his company.
“Very well.” I nodded to him and walked towards the vines. I carefully looked at it and grabbed it with my right hand first. While in my left I felt a hand grab mine, I turned to see it was Kili.
“Just in case, I’ll pull you back up.” I smiled at him and nodded in gratitude.
“Okay.” I sighed exhaled. One….two…three! I stepped off the bridge and onto the first vine and already I felt the vine beneath my feet swing. I gripped the vine above my as tight as I could while Kili used his strength to hold me up as best he could. I then turned to Kili and told him to let go.
At first he was hesitant but one look in my eyes told him that I would be alright. He released my hand and I joined that hand alongside my other one as I slowly began testing each vine out. Even with the lightest step I could muster, the vines still swung about and I even almost fell over.
“Definitely not this way!” I advised as I moved over to the next set of vines that lead me closer to the streams.
‘Hela…..Hela.’ the voice called out to me again. However this time it was a voice I knew all too well. But it-it couldn’t be. ‘Hela please help us. The Deviants are back.’
“Ikaris?” my foot suddenly wobbled and I nearly fell into the water had it not been for some quick foot work in wrapping my legs around another vine and great core-strength in bending upward so that I could avoid touching the water.
“Hela? Are you alright!?” Fili called out to me.
“Fine just fine. I uhh—found another problem. Definitely don’t go for this path here.” I pulled myself back up and continued onward till I finally was able to get to the other side.
‘Hela! Hela please help us!’ this time it was Phastos’ voice I heard.
‘Please sister you’re the only one who can help us!’ Sprite’s voice soon cried out in my head.
‘We need you little sister. Find us!’ Gilgamesh too?
“No, no, no, no this is a trick! SILENCE!!” I exclaimed as I turned around. “Oh bugger.” What I saw before me was just utter chaos.
All the dwarves plus Bilbo decided it was a good idea to go all at once across the vines. Sure the vines seemed to hold up but for how long? Some of them were hanging on for their lives as they crossed each vine one by one, while others were hopping from one vine to the next like rabbits hopping along in the fields.
I slapped myself awake before I saw Bilbo and Thorin coming in close to me. I stood up and reached out my hand for Bilbo and he took it as I helped him off the vines right as Thorin jumped down beside us.
“You both okay?” I asked them.
“Ye-yes yes fine. Fine all good. Slight problem with some of those vines but—all……good.” Bilbo’s voice wavered a bit. I cupped the side of his face and I could see his eyes weren’t looking into mine. He was looking in my general direction but he wasn’t fully looking me in the eyes.
“Oh Bilbo. Hang on. Oh I hope this works.” I used Ajak’s gem piece and touched the Hobbit’s temples with my finger tips and saw them beginning to glow. Golden veins lit up onto Bilbo’s temples as he let out a gasp and looked around frantically. “Easy Bilbo, easy it’s just me.”
“Hela? Wha-what just……”
“The dark magic of this forest was starting to make you go blind. I don’t know if the healing will last long but for now you’re alright.”
“Thank you Hela. Truly I….” suddenly there was a large splash from the water and I saw a shocking sight.
Bombur had fallen asleep and had fallen into the waters of the stream. Without even thinking, I raced into the waters and using Gilgamesh’s strength, I picked Bombur up from under his arms and dragged him out of the water.
One by one each of the dwarves were finally getting to the other side and when they saw me dragging Bombur out, they helped as best as they could.
“Bombur! Bombur!” Bofur exclaimed.
“Wake up you great fat oaf!” Bifur snapped in Khuzdul.
“Oh please Hela help him!” Bofur said to me worriedly. I touched my hand over Bombur’s heart and used Ajak’s magic to heal him. But even as the glow died down, Bombur still did not wake up.
“What? No, no, no that’s impossible.” I then placed my hands to Bombur’s temples much like I did to Bilbo and used more of her healing power to try and awaken Bombur from his slumber.
I kept trying to push myself to giving him more healing magic but Fili and Kili separated from me telling me to stop.
“No! I—I can’t let him die!”
“He’s not dead Hela. He’s asleep! A deep sleep it would seem.” Fili told me.
“He’s right. You did your best. Besides your nose was starting to bleed again just like back on the Misty Mountains.” I reached up to touch my nose and just like Kili said, I saw blood on the tips of my fingers. I turned to Thorin and pleaded for forgiveness.
“Forgive me Thorin. I—I cannot awaken him.”
“It’s not your fault Hela. You did your best. Fili and Kili are right. We cannot have you draining your powers like before. Not in this place. Make a stretcher for Bombur! If he will not awaken, we’ll have to carry him.”
At that decree, the other dwarves groaned but obeyed their kings command. I looked down at Bombur and took off some of the dried up leaves that stuck to his face.
“You did your best, that’s all we could ask for.” Fili assured me as I felt his hand grip my shoulders. But not enough. It’s never enough. No matter how much I try, or how hard or long I train to use my siblings and Celestial Prime’s magic, it’s never enough. Not without dealing with the expense of draining my own energy.
“We need to get out of here.” I said as I stood up and walked off.
We kept on walking but now with half the company needing to carry Bombur’s deadweight, we were forced to take more rests than what I was comfortable with.
“We need….to take a rest.” Nori said as he and the others stopped. I could see the company’s body language swaying and growing faint. And the voices kept whispering in my ear. Not only the voices of my fallen family but also dark whispers, chatters and clicks in the dark.
“Those voices…..can you hear them?” Bilbo slurred out. Wait he could hear those voices too?
“I hear nothing.” Thorin slurred back. “No wind…..no birds….. What hour is it?”
“I do not know.” Dwalin answered back in the same manner. “I do not even know what day it is.”
“This is taking too long.” Thorin responded. “Is there no end to this accursed forest!?” he then shouted.
“None that I can see.” Glóin responded. “Only trees and more trees!” the magic of this forest was now really starting to affect every member of this company to the worst possible level. The madness seeping into their minds and I could tell from the distant look in Thorin’s eye he was going to lead them off the path.
“This way.” My fears were confirmed.
“Gandalf said—” Oin slurred but as Thorin pushed through his company, he snapped.
“Do as I say. Follow me!” I quickly got in front of him stopping him from going any further. “Out of my way!!!”
“You will stay on this path Thorin Oakenshield! Your mind is being toyed with! If you leave this path, you and your company will be lost forever in this forest!”
“And how do we trust that you haven’t gotten us lost? It’s in your name after all—the Celestial of Death.”
“He’s right. She could’ve been leading us off the pathway the entire time!” Dori exclaimed.
“She’s responsible for getting us this lost!!” Nori shouted as he pointed at me.
‘They dare insult you. Show them who you really are.’ A dark whisper said in my head. My blood boiled but I tried to calm them down.
“This is not who you are. Any of you. If we stick to the path, we’ll get out of here safely and in one piece.”
“I’ll never listen to another word of you Celestial of Death!” it was then I was roughly shoved aside by Thorin and he quickly guided the others out of path and deeper into the forest. All but Bilbo, Fili and Kili were left. The brother staring at me while Bilbo was fiddling with something along the trees.
“Hela he—”
“My brother Ikaris was right. Dwarves never see us Celestials as friends.” I said as I got up and just left them. Maybe it was the magic, or maybe the hurtful words of the group that I came to accept as an extended family, I don’t know. All I remember was getting up and walking away, trying to dry up the tears building in my eyes. Fili and Kili shouting out my name.
I walked and walked and walked, the voices in my head tempting me to act against the dwarves.
‘Show them who you are. One snap of your fingers and you could end their lives. You are a Goddess! The Goddess of Death! Show those mortal dwarves they mean nothing to you.’
“Whoever is playing games SILENCE YOUR TONGUE!!” I slurred before roaring out. But all I got was as a response was an eerie silence. At least until I heard something. A sound I hoped I would never hear again.
A roar. But not just any type of roar. This roar was like mixing a dragon, bear and nundu all in one. It pierced the air of the forest and a cold shiver ran up my spine. I heard the snap of a branch and even felt the earth begin to shake.
I raced onward following the shiver and there along the side of a mountain there it was. It’s sleek, shadow-like body walked along the edge like a lizard but it’s body was in the shape of what looked like a combination of a bear and wolf. It had the front have shape of a bear with its large paws and razor sharp claws, but the lower half had a wolf—or well a wargs’ back legs for running.
The snout was more bear like but it’s teeth poked out from its lips and were sharp like a warg’s teeth but longer. Very long, I’d say even about as long as an Elvish dagger. It walked along sniffing the ground until it’s head perked up and it turned to me. It’s piercing sunlight eyes stared directly at me as it let out a roar and charged right for me.
*3rd Person POV*
The fight was brutal and bloody. Sharp teeth and claws lunged at Hela. And though she fought back as hard as she could, this Deviant was the fastest moving one she had ever dealt with that was this size.
She was barely even able to get it to stay down before it would lift itself back up and hit her back twice as hard. With a sharp cry of pain she fell down the side of the cliff before landing on her stomach onto a ledge.
Hela pushed herself up against the ledge she was lucky to land on. Her body littered in scars and her arm bleeding pretty badly. She gripped her arm and heard Bilbo’s voice from above her.
“Hela!”
“Bilbo no! You have to get out of here!” she exclaimed.
“What?”
“The Deviant! BEHIND YOU!!!” When Bilbo turned he yelped as before him stood the Deviant. He had faced down orcs, wargs, and was going up against a dragon but (only in stories) had he thought to actually see a Deviant live before him. The Deviant roared down at the Halfling when a rock was thrown at its head.
“Hey demon! Come on over here!” Kili exclaimed as he threw another stone at it.
“Come on Deviant you want a real challenge? Come this way!” Fili said as both he and his brother armed themselves with their swords. The Deviant huffed and began walking towards the young dwarf princes. Hela took out Aeglos and held the wooden end to Bilbo so that he could pull her up while she gripped a few inches below where the blade of Aeglos began. Bilbo held as tightly as he could while Hela scaled up the side of the mountain and fell to her back.
“Why did you come?”
“We were worried and Fili and Kili they—”
“They’re fools. Deviants aren’t affected by Mortal weapons. They’re just gonna get themselves killed.” She pushed herself up but Bilbo tried to get her to stop since she already looked like hell.
“Hela wait—you-you’re injured. And that arm looks pretty bad.”
“I don’t have time to argue Master Hobbit. Now get those two idiots out of here and leave this to me!” she shifted her armor to her sister Thena’s white and gold armor and raced after the Deviant with Bilbo at her tail.
Fili and Kili stood strong and firm but all it took was one swipe of its large paw to send both brothers flying into the air near a crack in the mountain. They fell through it and were hanging onto each other for dear life with their swords in the rock as their only anchor.
While Hela fought round 2 against the Deviant, Bilbo raced over and quickly grabbed Fili out of the hole since he was the closest.
“Kili!” Fili exclaimed to his little brother. His sword was barely able to hold on and as Kili was about to fall deep within the earth, both he and Bilbo gripped onto Kili’s hands and tried to pull him up.
Hela swung Aeglos (which was charged with Thena’s Celestial magic) at the Deviant’s face which scarred it up and it swung it’s paw at her trying to take her down. She then stabbed the Deviant in the chest and using as much strength as she could muster, she managed to pin the Deviant down. However an exclaimed cry broke her concentration.
Fili and Bilbo were struggling to get Kili back up onto the mountain and next thing she knew, she was pinned to the ground, claws scrapping her back repeatedly as she let out the most agonizing screams her throat ever made until she just lay there on her stomach limp.
The Deviant huffed and turned it’s attention back to her friends. Huffing and walking towards them. It’s eyes studying them a bit closer as there seemed to be Celestial magic radiating off of the three of them, and it was strong magic too.
As it is with the way of the Deviants, tendrils began to come out from its back as it walked towards them, wanting to drain them of that magic before they would turn to stone. Hela slowly began to move and she saw the sight that was before them. Memories of how each one of her brothers and sisters were sent to that fate, if that Deviant found out they weren’t really Celestials, the three of them would be ripped to shreds.
She saw Aeglos just an inch away from her and she gripped it tight in her hand. The Celestial imprints of Thena’s magic surrounded Aeglos and she let out a cry before slamming the blade of Aeglos straight into the Earth and then pulling as hard as she could.
The earth between the Deviant and her friends cracked and the Deviant stopped sensing that something wasn’t right. Finally after struggling to get him back up, Kili was finally able to see the horror that would befall the three of them.
“Hela?” Bilbo asked.
“HELA!!!!” Fili and Kili cried out. She only looked at them, the white streaks of her hair blocking her face as she gripped Aeglos tighter in both her hands and sent them a final telepathic message.
‘Farewell…….my brothers.’ Then the side of the cliff began to break and crumble apart. The Deviant tried to run but anywhere it went, the rock underneath it’s feet broke apart. Even as it hung on for dear life, it too soon fell along with Hela and the rest of the mountain down into the waters below. As loud and quickly as the mountain side fell, all went quiet and still once more.
Downstream as the current was soft with only a few bumps of waterfalls a body was gently floating down the current. A mixture of blood and earth covered her body, her armor was torn by claw marks and teeth.
The body that floated down the stream was Hela. Her body would dip down into the water before remerging back to the surface until finally she was forced up along the shore of rock and the light of the sun shined down upon her.
Shortly after being brought to shore a figure stood before her. He knelt down to observe her more closely. Taking away the wet strands of hair that blocked her face and getting a closer look at her uniform he could see that she was neither from the World of Men nor from another Elvish kingdom.
She slightly stirred and her eyes faintly opened but all she could see was a bright Elvish light surrounding her and long blonde hair.
“H-Hal—dir?” was all she spoke before she passed out once more. The figure that stood before her knew of the name but was lost as to why this woman knew of the Marchwarden of Lórien.
“Hîr vuin Legolas.” A female elf with long ginger hair and wearing a camouflage uniform came forward and asked him. “Who is she?”
“I do not know. But she knows of the Marchwarden of Lórien.” The female walked closer and saw just how injured she was.
“She’ll die if she is not treated.”
“The king will not permit a stranger in this kingdom.”
“But our King will need to know of who she is. And why she is here? And she cannot answer those questions if she dies.” The Elf known as Legolas as carefully as she could, picked Hela up bridal style and carried her to his horse and told the She-elf.
“Keep heading East, Tauriel. If she came from the mountain that collapsed, she may have seen something there, or may have been the one to cause it.” The she-elf known as Tauriel bowed her head and got on top of her horse and rode off, while Legolas rode back to his home of the Woodland realm to get this woman some sort of help.
If the King permitted it that is.

Do you have any headcanons (who am I kidding, I'd bet actual money on you having them) about Denethor & Faramir's vague magical abilities? The Prof really gave me whiplash through mentioning but never elaborating on it. I think you mentioned this topic briefly in other posts but I don't remember one specifically about this (sorry if I'm wrong!) and wondered about your thoughts on that :)
Actually I don't have any hcs about this uwu.... I have canon facts tho! HAHA
That's a lie, I do have hcs about the canon facts as well but ANYWAY.
So Faramir's powers are described twice and, whilst I suppose you could view them as ambiguous, they seem clear to me.
So here Faramir reads Gollum's mind in order to determine if he is telling the truth or not. He describes the way he perceives another's mind too, with doors, rooms and darkness or light. Then of course there's this bit not a moment later-
'It is called Cirith Ungol.' Gollum hissed sharply and began muttering to himself. 'Is not that its name?' said Faramir turning to him. 'No!' said Gollum, and then he squealed, as if something had stabbed him. 'Yes, yes, we heard the name once. But what does the name matter to us? Master says he must get in. So we must try some way. There is no other way to try, no.'
So here Faramir makes good on his implicit threat in the previous paragraph, it was good that Gollum spoke the truth, because here is the consequence that Faramir can levee upon someone who doesn't. So this shows that Faramir can also manipulate minds as well as read them. It's quite blatant and unsubtle! As far as magic in tolkien goes.
Denethor's abilities however are... I would say subtler? He definitely still has them, but they are far more latent in his behaviour and presence, they don't seem to be so actively used like Faramir's are. Now, Gandalf associates these powers with being of westernesse, and seems to suggest that Faramir's abilities are descended from Denethor's, but as we've talked about Gandalf can be wrong and I actually think it would make more sense for them to come from Finduilas.
Let me explain, and I apologise because I can't be bothered to track down all the quotes but. So canonically, using the Palantiri for a great amount of time and with great skill will actually confer powers upon the user naturally. So Denethor goes to the top of the tower and 'listens' to the north and hears Theoden's approach! Even though they are days from arriving. He can also see into men's hearts and has a 'piercing gaze'. These sound somewhat like Faramir's? But again, they aren't as blatant.
And it's good to note that Aragorn does not have these powers. He is intuitive, but he cannot read minds, he is very attuned but he cannot hear, say, the Uruk Hai coming upon the fellowship. So despite being of equal lineage of Westernesse to Denethor, Aragorn does not possess obviously magical abilities. He also hasn't held a Palantir in all his life until he gets his hands on the Orthanc stone, an experience that 'ages him'. So I would say that it makes more sense for Denethor's powers to have come to him from using the Palantir so diligently, whereas Faramir's come from his mother.
Because elves actually have natural mind reading abilities! Osanwe (mind speech) used to be the elf's native language until Morgoth arrived. And whilst one could argue that some elven blood is in at least Elros' line, that is from so long ago now that it truly cannot have any noticeable effect on the dunadain now. Finduilas on the other hand can name her ancestor who married an elf and can trace her lineage right back to her. The Princes of Dol Amroth also live by an elven haven and the sea in general so the aspects of these powers were certainly encouraged.
I TALK A LOT MORE ABOUT MY HC ABOUT DOL AMROTHIAN SPOOKY ELF POWERS HERE
I think thats that, the last post goes into more detail about power specifics and how they work to some degree so!

“They passed the Door and walked on down the steep winding road. Light was growing, and the tall columns and carven figures beside the way went slowly by like grey ghosts.
Suddenly the silence was broken, and they heard below them cries and the ringing of swords: such sounds as had not been heard in the hallowed places since the building of the City. At last they came to Rath Dínen and hastened towards the House of the Stewards, looming in the twilight under its great dome.
‘Stay! Stay!’ cried Gandalf, springing forward to the stone stair before the door. ‘Stay this madness!’
For there were the servants of Denethor with swords and torches in their hands; but alone in the porch upon the topmost step stood Beregond, clad in the black and silver of the Guard; and he held the door against them. Two of them had already fallen to his sword, staining the hallows with their blood; and the others cursed him, calling him outlaw and traitor to his master.
Even as Gandalf and Pippin ran forward, they heard from within the house of the dead the voice of Denethor crying: ‘Haste, haste! Do as I have bidden! Slay me this renegade! Or must I do so myself?’ Thereupon the door which Beregond held shut with his left hand was wrenched open, and there behind him stood the Lord of the City, tall and fell; a light like flame was in his eyes, and he held a drawn sword.”
- Gandalf and Pippin coming to save Faramir from Denethor’s madness. Beregond had broken through the door and was protecting Faramir from Denethor’s servants. As a Gondorian soldier himself Beregond was committing crimes worthy of execution, but he would be instead exiled to Ithilien by King Elessar Telcontar after the war. Return of the King, The Pyre of Denethor.

Pov Lotr (Lord of the rings)
Being in Rivendell, at that meeting, was the worst thing in the world, the desire to leave was immense, but Gandalf, my current mentor, insisted that I stay, that I could help.
“I called you here to answer the threat from Mordor. - King Elrond spoke, all present were in a circle. "The middle earth is about to be destroyed." He was farther away from the group. And in complete silence
“No one can escape, they must unite or they will be destroyed, every race is bound by this fate, this prediction!" — I remained motionless, but not taking my eyes off the ground "show us the ring, Frodo" Frodo got up and went to the center where there was a table and put on the ring.
At that moment, I froze, I couldn't express it and I felt the prince's eyes on me again, I looked up and saw him looking worried.
– there is only one choice – The King of Rivendell continued – the ring must be destroyed.
— and what are we waiting for? – a dwarf spoke up and raised an ax towards the ring, I raised my eyes. He attacked the ring, but was thrown back and his ax destroyed.
I could hear Sauron's voice in my head. His whispers entered her head. Almost driving me crazy.
"quiet manere..." I whispered the spell so that Sauron's whisper would stop him from creating visions in Frodo.
— the ring cannot be destroyed, by any art we currently possess. The ring was forged, on the mountain of doom, only there it can be destroyed.
My former master Saruman, told me about all this, and about some things about Sauron. I didn't know about Saruman's evil principles when I joined him, but when I found out I ran.
— he shall be taken to the center of Mordor and returned to the flames that forged him — could hear the whispers of the ring as well as Frodo, and repeated the spell over and over, so that Sauron's whispers subside — one of you must fulfill this journey.
"Mordor is not easily entered," Boromir pointed out. "The gates of Mordor are not only guarded by Orcs," he added. "Evil never sleeps there." And the great eye watches over everything and everyone.
There's no way to get in.
— you didn't hear anything the lord Elrond said! — legolas rose, addressing Boromir — the ring must be destroyed!
— That's what you think it's up to you to do — gimli verbally attacked him.
— And if we fail, what will become of us? - Boromir roared.
— Gentlemen, please do not get carried away,— Gandalf looked at me. — Y/n... — Everyone looks at me like they haven't seen me since the beginning of the meeting. — I think it's time you told them what you know.
— I thought I would speak to King Elrond in private. — I pondered worriedly.
— We thought you'd better speak up so we don't misrepresent your words. — Elrond looked at me for me to continue.
— And what could this brat know about Sauron and the ring?"
— Most certainly more than you, though a stone must absorb more knowledge than you, abyssal. — Legolas addressed Gimli, who failed to explode from within. - continue madam.
- Thanks. — I smiled at the elf in front of me. — Well, the ring as your elven majesty said, was forged in Mordor and has dark magic, and can drive anyone mad with its whispers and visions."
— I don't hear those whispers coming from the ring. Which means you could be lying.
— yes you are not, but Frodo is and when you struck the ring stupidly so to speak.— Gimli glared at me, but I ignored him. — I could hear. I scolded him with a spell to stop tormenting the poor Hobbit and me of course.
— Do you have proof of everything you're talking about? — Boromir challenged me, I looked at Gandalf who nodded.
— do Y/n. Frodo it won't hit you like they do, I can assure you.
—qui audire nequeunt, Sauron audiant. — at that moment Sauron's Whispers could be heard by all present, leaving them disoriented, with the exception of Legolas, Elrond, Gandalf and Frodo. Gandalf gestured and I knew he should stop. — quiete manere. The whispers stopped.
— how can you know all this? - Boromir asked and I looked at my master who nodded for me to say.
— I have been Gandalf's apprentice since childhood, as you may know, but for a time I was overcome by lust and greed, I served the one who helps Sauron. — I pause and sigh. — Saruman.
— Are you servant of that unfortunate?! - Boromir roared in immense rage.
— How dare you be here? Drinking and eating among us. You bitch! — Gimli swore at me and Boromir drew his sword.
— you imbecile! — The prince of the forest shouted at Boromir taking the sword from his hands — at least now I know they are not listening, and how dare you raise the sword to an ally?! She is with Gandalf and it seems that Elrond trusts her.
— when I went to meet Saruman, I found Y/n with him and when Saruman talked about his evil principles Y/n saw the danger she was in, while Saruman fought me I asked her to run away and help Frodo.
Everyone seemed to trust me except Boromir and Gimli. Legolas came towards me and stood by my side.
- It is true. When I got to Frodo, she was trying to kill the orc with a spell. She would give her life for the Hobbits — Aragorn defended me
— I was honored to see you fight in the battle of the five armies, you fought bravely and saved lives. She's a warrior.” He took my hand and kissed it, making me feel embarrassed.
....
After some discussions (many discussions) it was decided that Legolas, Boromir, Aragorn, Gandalf the four hobbits and I would be The Fellowship of the Ring and we would have the mission to destroy the ring once and for all.
We were getting ready to leave Rivendell for Mordor. I was sitting on a bench in the Palace waiting for Gandalf's orders, when a certain elf sat down beside me.
— I never thought we'd see each other again, after all.
— Neither do I, Your Highness. I'm sorry for the damage I've caused to your lands.
— we were at war, on different sides, I followed my father's orders and you followed Gandalf's,— he paused, — and don't call me that, your highness, you can call me by my name."
— of course Legolas.
— Thanks Y/n. — He smiled — I'm sorry about those idiots, they don't know what they say.
— It's not their fault, I would do the same if I knew someone worked for the enemy, and so closely.
— but I wouldn't pull out your sword and speak blasphemies like the two of them did… - he took my hand and moved a little closer - You wouldn't be like them. I could feel your breath
- y/n... - Elrond's voice called me - Gandalf is calling you in the west area - I composed myself just like Legolas and we got up - he wants a private conversation.
— Of course your majesty — I bowed and looked at Legolas—“we'll see you soon.
There will be part 2!!!!

The wind blew across the treetops, making the leaves dance. Gandalf rode enjoying the peaceful pace. "Ah good old Toby, care for some my dear Bilbo?" offering his pipe to the hobbit. Bilbo graciously declined the offer as the group came to a sudden halt. Gandalf pulled on his reins, calling up to Thorin, "Why are we stopping now?"
Ignoring the wizard’s question, Thorin commanded “Dwalin, Fili, follow me. The rest of you stay here until we return!" Thorin turned back to the path ahead, eyeing a distant sign of trouble. The remaining company, although confused, obeyed their king’s order. Kili was not as easily swayed. While the others kept to themselves, Kili instead began to gallop towards the three.
“Thorin, what’s this all about then? Our travel has already been delayed by that buttoned up halfing. Now we’re wasting time; chasing squirrels and striking every brushing bush.” Dwalin grumbled.
Thorin answered while pointing to the sky “Best our travel be delayed than ambushed. Look.” His finger followed the trail down showing its origin. "Be on guard, nothing is safe out here." Thorin warned. Dismounting their ponies, the three walked the grounds seeing an open fire with a hen roasting on a spit. Kili secured his pony next to Fili’s. He hid behind shrubs. Fili heard the rustling, turning back all he saw were four horses, nothing unusual. Wait, four? Fili rubbed his eyes then held his growling stomach. He was starting to get hungry and the delicious smell of something roasting wasn’t helping. Concluding that he must be seeing things, Fili returned to his uncle.
Thorin found a full pack amongst the campground. Going through it, he pulled out a pouch with a boar symbol embroidered into the leather “This is from the Iron Hill…” He observed the surroundings.
“AHH!” The prince screamed in shock. Turning around Fili saw his younger brother.
Pieces of foliage were in Kili’s hair and clothes. Whipping them off his face dropped from a grin to flushed embarrassment and guilt. He shushed Fili, afraid of being reprimanded by Thorin. “Me shush? You shush!” Fili lowered his tone. Although he was irritated, he didn’t want to attract his uncle's attention or the unknown camper. “By Durin, I could have carved you up, sneaking up on me like that. I-...what are you doing here? Uncle told you to stay back.” He angrily whispered, even fearing Thorin’s wrath for Kili’s sake.
“My skills were no use back there; just tinkers and miners prepping for a snack. I would have cut the bread wrong. Besides, if the three of you found yourselves in trouble I would be here to save you.” Kili argued his case.
“Ha! YOU save ME? Tell me, who helped you up onto your pony this morning?” Fili laughed, tussling his brother’s hair.
“What are you two idiots doing?!” Dwalin impatiently scolded the boys. “This is no place to be playing around.”
“It was only a bit of fun mister Dwalin.” Kili said, getting up.
Throin rejoins the now three dwarves.“Kili! You were to stay back with the others.” He scolded his nephew. Hearing a noise the hair on Thorin's neck stood up, “Let's get back, something isn't right.”
“Let's go." Dwalin said as the three walked back to the horses.
Fili took the opportunity to nab up a new weapon. His boot stepped on a pile of leaves triggering a hidden net trap.Fili was swept up hanging in a tree. "Fili! Quick cut him down!" Thorin yelled running over, Kili and Dwalin each pulled out a knife sawing at the ropes.
Demonting from their steads the company stretched. Their limbs hurt from riding so many hours straight. Bombur took the opportunity to prepare a small snack. Nobody opposed it.
Bofur sighed in relief after relieving himself. Fixing himself Bofur was ready to join the others when something caught his attention. Licking berry juice off his fingers Bofur went to head back. Turning the berries flew out of his hand from being startled. A hooded figure stood in front of him. “Where'd you come from? Sorry, were these yours?” He asked. Backing away slowly, Bofur bumped into the stump. Walking around it he received no reply from the stranger. “Listen, just an honest mistake. I can go pick you some more.” He offered. A subtle sound drew his attention down. His foot in a hidden rope loop. “Ugh oh.” He said before being snagged by a snare trap. Bofur got dragged across the ground up into a tree. His hat falling to the ground, Bofur hung upside down. "You made this trap? Mighty talented. Hard to catch dwarves, being that we are so hefty." He awkwardly chuckled. His nervous smile shifted into a worrisome frown as the stranger approached. They drew out a dwarven dagger from behind their lower back. "Coming to cut me some slack, yeah? BOMBUR! BIFUR! ANYBODY HELP!?"
Bofur’s cries for help reached the ears of the company. Without hesitation the group ran to the shouting. Out from the bushes Nori and Gloin came running. Seeing the stranger, Nori ran over and attacked. The sound of metal clanged as the two daggers met. The two struggled, using their body weight to shove the daggers closer. Breaking off, the stranger dodged Nori’s attack. Stumbling back they tripped on their cloak falling to the ground. Gloin went swinging his ax down, but the stranger rolled out of the way. Getting up they punched Nori and back kicked Gloin. Thrown off both men dropped their weapons. As the others joined in, the stranger nabbed Gloin’s weapon. Swinging it around they kept an open perimeter. "CUT ME LOOSE, FOR DURIN SAKE!" Bofur yelled. Balin went for it. Raising the ax the stranger chucked it at Balin, the blade just missed the back of Balin’s heel. Bifur and Dori each grabbed an arm trying to hold the stranger back. Reaching Bofur, Balin fussed at the knot. Throwing themselves onto the floor Dori and Bifur collided heads. Running over the stranger grabbed Balin’s shoulders, tossing him back. In the blink of an eye the stranger was ambushed by Dwalin.
"No one attacks my brother!" Dwalin yelled, pinning down the culprit. Their legs flailed under Dwalin. Yanking off the hood Dwalin revealed a female dwarf. "Durin's name, what’s this?"
"That dwarf there scared mah kill away!" She yelled.
“What is going on here?” Thorin asked, emerging from the brush. His nephews right behind.
"She was going to stab Bofur." Gloin answered, helping Balin up.
Thorin went cutting Bofur free. He dropped to the ground and let out a groan of pain. He caught his breath giving Thorin a thumbs up. “Get him up.” Throin ordered Fili and Kili. The two went, pulling Bofur to his feet. Walking over Thorin held his knife, getting down to her level he pressed the blade against her neck. "Is this true? You tried killing one of my men?"
"No, I was gonna cut 'em loose, and have a friendly talk." She answered him with a sarcastic tone. Thorin put some pressure. Feeling his patience running thin she composed herself, "I just need me rope back, I have no interest in you townies. Now can you let me up?" She asked, looking up at Dwalin. Drawing back the knife Thorin gave Dwalin the okay. Climbing off Dwalin offered a hand. Taking it she was pulled back onto her feet. "Took me hours ta set that trap; I was gonna catch a stag this time ‘round." She said, looking over the tarnished rope.
"You set all these traps yourself? What of the one back at the campsite?" Thorin asked.
"You set those off too?! Gilthok meIf! Haven't wasted enough of me supplies already!" She yelled out in aggravation. Salvaging what she could, the lass stormed off back toward the campsite.
Following not far behind the men went back to their horses. Balin stopped Thorin wishing to discuss more about the she-dwarf. "Balin, you're considering asking that wild lander to join my company?" Thorin asked defensively. "She fought my men, nearly killed one. We know nothing of her intentions being out here."
"All I am saying is the lass has a valuable set of skills, Thorin. Obviously she knows how to survive in the wild. An what do we have? Gloin, the fire maker?" He asked, looking over as she aggressively ate her foal. "You know, as do I. We need all the help we can find” Balin reasoned. Thorin crossed his arms, snubbing the idea. Balin chuckled, giving Thorin's shoulder a pat."You leave it to me." He assured the king walking over to the lass. "Tell me lass what can I call you?"
Looking at the white haired dwarf she tossed a bone at his feet. Taking a thumb she whipped a piece of meat from the corner of her mouth."I'm called Shail."
"Lovely name means radiant warrior, very befitting. A lass like yourself in these lands must be off on a journey. Any thought of where you are going? Maybe to the Blue Mountains, or the Iron Hills in the north?"
"Nowhere specific, the better question is where are you all off to? The Blue Mountains are back thada way. Thirteen of ya traveling to the hills without any merch is abit suspicious. Wouldn't ya agree?" She asked, tossing her scraps away.Dousing the flame she went packing up the site.
"Yes, I'd suppose. Though that is not were we are heading. No, you see we are off to the Lonely Mountain." Balin answered.
Stopping in her tracks, Shail looked in disbelief. "I know of only one dwarf who'd think of traveling back to that mountain." Looking at the stoick black haired dwarf, "Thorin Oakensheild son of Thrain? So the stories are true."
"Yes, they are." Thorin said walking up to her. The same stern look on his face as he toward over her. "Most of these dwarves have never spent a week in the wild, I worry they won't make the journey."
Looking over Thorin's right shoulder to see what characters were in her presents. Shail watched as Bilbo flinched at a horse fly. The strange soft creature blew air and waved the bug away "A week? I'd say before nightfall you lose half of them. Sorry, I don't like traveling with townies anyway."
"Townies?" Kili asked from the back. Thoirn looked over, giving his nephew the stink eye.
"Townies, the folks who live in large packs. All soft and fragile, afraid of messing up your locks." She said tieing off her supplies. "The lot of ya just don't fit in with the wild." Loading it onto her own pony she went examining the members. "Here let's take a look at ya. Come here!" She said tugging at a few of them. "How well can ya see in the dark?" She asked, looking into Fili's eyes. Turning briskly she yelled into Oin's trumpet,"What about yer HEARING!?" The old dwarf flinched and groaned at the verbal assault. "Know how ta handle a weapon? Do ya even have one?" She asked Ori. Tugging his bag she rummaged through it. She pulled out his slingshot, "Well this doesn't seem too handy." Tossing it back she went on. "What about hiding your musk? Let's have a smell." grabbing Dori's arm she took a whiff. "Ugh, you smell just like a townie! You need a good mud bath." She said before being shooed away. "I don't come for free either. So what can the great Thorin Oak-en-sheild offer me?" She asked in a mocking tone.
"A portion of Erebor's riches shall be yours." Balin answered. He went retrieving a contract from his satchel.
Grabbing the paper, Shail skimmed over it. "So I'd get a bunch of shiny bits?" She asked. Giving a nod Balin was thrown off by the sudden laughter. "I don't need that useless stuff. So I guess you can't offer me anything." Shail went, shoving the parchment onto Balin's chest. "Have fun getting eaten up by that dragon." Parting through the company, a scent caught her attention. Sniffing the air she turned to the large ginger dwarf "Is that a tasty smell?" Bombur held two iced pastry in each hand, nibbling them. "Well you can give it here." She went to snatch it, but Fili got to the sweet first. Tossing it over to his uncle.
Catching it Thorin changed the offer, "I can offer you three meals a day and these so-called tasties." Walking up to her Thorin waved the dessert cake in Shail's face. "Better to have a meal offered than to chase one down. So what do you say? Will you join us?" He asked.
Shail’s eyes followed the treat. "Double my servings on the meals and tasties. I also get first pick on a sleeping area. And you get me close enough to the Iron Hills, where we can depart from one another." She counter offered, holding out a hand. The two shook on it. She was officially a part of the company. Snatching her sweet, Shail went mounting her horse.

When Frodo came to himself he was still clutching the Ring desperately. He was lying by the fire, which was now piled high and burning brightly. His three companions were bending over him.
'What has happened? Where is the pale king?'
... he asked wildly. They were too overjoyed to hear him speak to answer for a while; nor did they understand his question. At length he gathered from Sam that they had seen nothing but the vague shadowy shapes coming towards them. Suddenly to his horror Sam found that his master had vanished; and at that moment a black shadow rushed past him, and he fell. He heard Frodo's voice, but it seemed to come from a great distance, or from under the earth, crying out strange words. They saw nothing more, until they stumbled over the body of Frodo, lying as if dead, face downwards on the grass with his sword beneath him. Strider ordered them to pick him up and lay him near the fire, and then he disappeared. That was now a good while ago.
Sam plainly was beginning to have doubts again about Strider; but while they were talking he returned, appearing suddenly out of the shadows. They started, and Sam drew his sword and stood over Frodo; but Strider knelt down swiftly at his side.
'I am not a Black Rider, Sam,' he said gently, 'nor in league with them. I have been trying to discover something of their movements; but I have found nothing. I cannot think why they have gone and do not attack again. But there is no feeling of their presence anywhere at hand.'
When he heard what Frodo had to tell, he became full of concern, and shook his head and sighed. Then he ordered Pippin and Merry to heat as much water as they could in their small kettles, and to bathe the wound with it. 'Keep the fire going well, and keep Frodo warm!' he said. Then he got up and walked away, and called Sam to him. 'I think I understand things better now,' he said in a low voice. 'There seem only to have been five of the enemy. Why they were not all here, I don't know; but I don't think they expected to be resisted. They have drawn off for the time being. But not far, I fear. They will come again another night, if we cannot escape. They are only waiting, because they think that their purpose is almost accomplished, and that the Ring cannot fly much further. I fear, Sam, that they believe your master has a deadly wound that will subdue him to their will. We shall see!' Sam choked with tears. 'Don't despair!' said Strider. 'You must trust me now. Your Frodo is made of sterner stuff than I had guessed, though Gandalf hinted that it might prove so. He is not slain, and I think he will resist the evil power of the wound longer than his enemies expect. I will do all I can to help and heal him. Guard him well, while I am away!' He hurried off and disappeared again into the darkness.
Frodo dozed, though the pain of his wound was slowly growing, and a deadly chill was spreading from his shoulder to his arm and side. His friends watched over him, warming him, and bathing his wound. The night passed slowly and wearily. Dawn was growing in the sky, and the dell was filling with grey light, when Strider at last returned.
'Look!' he cried; and stooping he lifted from the ground a black cloak that had lain there hidden by the darkness. A foot above the lower hem there was a slash. 'This was the stroke of Frodo's sword,' he said. 'The only hurt that it did to his enemy, I fear; for it is unharmed, but all blades perish that pierce that dreadful King. More deadly to him was the name of Elbereth.'
'And more deadly to Frodo was this!' He stooped again and lifted up a long thin knife. There was a cold gleam in it. As Strider raised it they saw that near the end its edge was notched and the point was broken off. But even as he held it up in the growing light, they gazed in astonishment, for the blade seemed to melt, and vanished like a smoke in the air, leaving only the hilt in Strider's hand. 'Alas!' he cried. 'It was this accursed knife that gave the wound. Few now have the skill in healing to match such evil weapons. But I will do what I can.'
