This might be out of left field, but when it comes to art, I'm having an issue where I keep getting bogged down in the details and creating overcomplicated works that I'm ultimately unhappy with.

I love your art style so, so much and you somehow manage to capture a perfect balance of simple shapes and colors while adding just enough detail to make it perfectly dimensional and recognizable.

If it's not too taxing, do you think you could explain how you determine how much detail and shading to include?

Oh that‘s a tough one 🤔 I must admit that most of the time I am just winging it and try around till it looks right or at least feels like it XD

Sooo, I draw in a more cartoonish style so it kinda works when I use less lines or use the few ones to exaggerate a movement or feeling. Let‘s look at Azira‘s hair for example:

That‘s not how in a realistic sense hair works but instead of drawing every single lock I am more focusing on the feeling of floofy by drawing wavy, round lines

I don‘t even have a clue how it would look like if I tried to draw more „realistic“ XD There are so many things I leave out like parts of the nose, proper upper and lower lip, eyelashes, etc etc etc.

So yeah if I draw more realistic I would defintiely do a different shading but since that‘s not the case here is how i do it:

I don‘t shade.

Ok I barely shade. There is definitely always that shadow I draw under the chin but otherwise it‘s also rather… minimalistic? But yeh, I also keep it simple and don‘t give every detail (like every strand of hair) a shadow so it‘s more like looking at a ball, drawing a curved line and then shade everything under it.

So in conclusion:

I am probably the worst person to ask for art advice XDD

Since I‘d done the sketch back then in one of my ask answers, I‘d planned to color it as well, considering the sketch looked nice enough and the story/author @angelabsol totally deserved a fully finished fanart not just a lame doodle…

But man…made this pic make me WORK for it.

No jokes, I perhaps redid this picture like 5 or 6 times because I wasn‘t satisfied with the colors or the shading or…other stuff….

So yeah, thats basically what my two weeks looked like, redrawing one artwork over and over pfff

While I usually shade my drawings, I actually put the one on the left on a shirt, which is why this just has flat colors

Your color is SO lovely would you mind if i asked for some tips on how you render and choose your colors 😭?

Thank you !! <3 I usually go in with base colors and focus on getting the values I want first. Then I work with color correction layers and gradient maps! For characters/objects/scenes that have rlly tricky, similar values or I just want to be rlly quick, I sometimes start of with grayscale (did smth similar for the blades).

Gradient maps are rlly rlly useful for when I want to make color palettes that oppose each other in a way seem more coherent or just pull a color palette together either way. You can see me struggling with doing that after I used that first gradient map (teal-pastel green-light orange-white) that totally washed out the purple, because it was between orange and green value wise and got pulled towards grey.

Another thing love doing is trying to reuse colors over and over again throughout the painting. So when you have a rlly strong color in one area only, I try and incorporate it in the rest of the drawing subtly to tie it in better. Underpaintings are a big thing as well. I draw over things; esp in backgrounds that‘d usually be one color, so all the colors still shine through a little bit. I do use that more for drawings that are more painterly tho. If you want that, dramatic underpaintings are the best thing ever! Have smth with lots of green to paint? RED UNDERPAINTINGGGG

I also am constantly thinking ‚where can I somehow put in a complimentary constrast‘ bcs those are heaven sent when it comes to nuance in color. Warm skintones/light pulls to green in the shadows and you don‘t even have to use green to convey that. Desaturation is my best friend. Though it‘s important to not that different complimentary colors will have different quantities in terms of visual value. Green and Red are on the same level in terms of color quantity, which makes them easy to shade with; whereas it‘s more difficult to shade blue/purple colors with orange/yellow. I could talk about colors forever ahhhhhhhhhh

Day 11 of Cotltober „Poison“! I didn‘t really have a crazy idea so it‘s kinda simple but yeah, this one turned out surprisingly good!

I noticed that everytime I draw something more gorey or brutal I draw the goat 🥲 I promise that thats not intentional lmao I love the goat <3

I made sure to put alot of efford into the shading this time and I really enjoyed it :3

I also tried using at least two diffrent colors, looks way better imo but yeah, I‘ll start actually coloring my pieces in again soon lol

[Charles is the prince of Monaco, living a life as normal as possible away from the duties that come with being a part of the royal family. When his former bodyguard quits his job, Charles is assigned an ex-military—who takes his new duties a little too serious for Charles’ liking. His name is Max.] is the basic summary—there‘s a lot to flesh out for this story but mhm i love a little bodyguard kinda enemies to lovers moment 😋

„Good morning, catastrophe. Had fun last night?“ Max asks, a bare hint of a smirk on his otherwise stoic face as he strolls into Charles‘ open kitchen. „Sounded like it. At least on her side.“

„Good morning, sunshine.“ Charles bites back with extra sweet venom oozing from his voice. He narrows his eyes, almost pouring his coffee onto the counter instead of into his mug. „Are you now monitoring and safety-checking my sex life too?“

Because that’s kind of…weird. But also hot? No, not hot, just weird. He kind of cringes to himself then when he remembers that the woman he was with was kind of a little loud, maybe a little over the top loud, and his windows were open. And Max does live right next to him, after all. So it‘s not that surprising that Max heard it.

„I do check, actually, yes.“

Charles promptly misses his mouth and spills the coffee down his chin and onto his bare chest, cursing when the hot liquid stings and he hurries to wipe it off.

„You what?“ he hisses once he‘s ridden himself of hot coffee where it‘s not supposed to be and glares at Max, who looks unimpressed. „I‘m sorry, but I think that goes a little over the top of safety measurements even for you, Max.“

Max remains unfazed—at least, his facial expression seems so. Charles recognizes the sharpness in his bright eyes, always alert, always present, always calculating.

Not for the first time, Charles thinks about what a beautiful shade of a color Max’s eyes are for how unnerving the stare behind them actually is.

„I background check all of the people you are in contact with, Mr. Leclerc.“ Max says then, nonchalant but with the slightest hint of something beneath his tone. „Especially the ones you bring to your house.“

Great.

Now Charles can‘t even take someone home without being scrutinized to his very core. If Andrea did this too, then at least his former bodyguard had the decency to not rub into his face.

„And?“ he huffs back, lips half-pressed to his mug. „Was she a serial killer of some sorts? In that case I‘m sure you should have tried to tell me that before I took her home.“

There is that something in Max‘s eyes again, the way he slightly but slowly pulls his bottom lip between the front of his teeth, as if he‘s contemplating, but Charles would rather label it as scheming. Like a shark, waiting to attack, maybe. Charles feels like he‘s constantly waiting for that eye-roll of the shark that indicates it‘s about to snap and maul him apart.

„No,“ he shrugs then, cool, leaning against the table in Charles‘ dining room as if he‘s home here himself. Actually, he kind of is. „Katie—Kathrine Hables, in case she didn’t tell you her full nume—is just is a bit of a gold-digger, you know, likes rich guys and to be invited on their yachts and private islands. You didn‘t invite her to your yacht by any chance, did you?“

Max smiles a bit at that but Charles feels nothing but hounded by it—he wants Andrea back. He was infinitely nicer and didn‘t make Charles feel like an idiot half of the time.

„No, I did not.“ he growls, annoyed, and Max pulls his lips into a brief pout, his arms crossed in the front of his chest. „Good. Did you check your drawer of watches, by the way? Maybe she took some, you never know with these types of girls.“

Charles almost all but slams his cup of coffee onto the marble counter.

It‘s barely half past nine in the fucking morning and Charles wants to fucking strangle someone.

That someone being his own personal bodyguard, to be precise.

Too bad Max is an ex Marine Corps soldier who strike him down before Charles would be even able to lift his hand to do so.

Milian‘s not the greatest fan of sitting around and „just“ watching shows or movies, but he thinks it‘s so funny how Sci-Fi works like Star Trek and Star Wars tried to predict the future and its designs. He watches them like you and me would see a movie to have a good laugh.

Despite having a ton of piercings, Milian only got one tattoo, the one on his right arm. He didn‘t enjoy the session that much, and in comparison to the sharp yet short pain of a piercing, the end result of a tattoo isn‘t worth it to sit through the tattoo session for hours. Patience isn't really his strongest point.

Fairytale movies, especially the ones being handdrawn and with a lot of old charme. It doesn‘t matter they‘re mostly made for children, even as an adult, Luucy does enjoy them too.

During her time at the ballett boarding school, sometimes Luucy did train so hard her feet would start bleeding. She wouldn‘t mind the pain or feeling of her shoes being soaked, but her teachers were very furious about this. First rule of being a good dancer is to take care of your health, and if Luucy wouldn‘t look after herself, she wouldn‘t be allowed to stay any longer. From this point on, she would make sure her shoes would always be as clean as freshly fallen snow.

Athena does enjoy various soap operas, but her favourite is definitely Swindling Passion; movies with a lot of romance and heartbreak (but in the end, also hearthealing) are something she does enjoy greatly too.

Despite being the shortest in her family, Athena actually got the loudest voice. She doesn‘t has to scream to get the attention of everyone, but if she wants to, she is always willed to make everyone become silent.

Jacob got only one pair of glasses, but various temples, to match his current mood. He‘s usually not that interested in fashion, but it‘s fun to „decorate“ the most important piece of his outfit.

As a child, Minerva was somewhat obsessed with the puppet show „Bunny Brigade“ (yeah, you can see where I did steal this from…). Even as teen, she sometimes can find a good laugh in the childish show, and admires the toy animal of her favourite bunny maybe just as much as the owl plush she got from Gillian as baby.

❔Give us a random fun fact! 

She gets a meltdown whenever she comes near shampoo and/ or a brush. And no, it doesn‘t get much better the older she gets – despite this, Minerva still insists on having long hair. Emma will never get it.

gods, this boy is so damn cute!

his watercolor blue eyes with light & dark shades, the plump pink lips, the hooked nose and his dark blonde hair

I could loose myself in those pretty eyes and just want to kiss his prominent lips

and gods, his voice! it‘s so deep, sending shivers down my spine. please, if he whispered in my ear or against my lips I would die.

and then he walks around in his wide stylish jeans and this black hoodie that I just want to wear too because it sure smells like him. he carries this tote bag at school and gets out the cute case with his stuff at the start of the lesson

just everything he does makes me think of how cute he is, like the different colored highlighting in a task, the smart answers in class, the way he behaves with his friends

his smile is so pretty, his laugh and grin makes me grin too

This was my first attempt in actually trying with lineless art, and I wanted to just have fun with the shading and rendering.

Not unlike a trance, his gaze shifted to nothing in particular just off to the side of her and unfocused as soon as she spoke up. 

That voice. He knew her.

Distant images of a fight and the memory of blood stinging in his eyes while he dragged himself to the hospital painted themselves across his mind. Just a split second later, he was able to pinpoint how he remembered her. 

A blink ended his mind‘s short mission to recall that time and Maxim‘s focus drew back over to her. The whole ordeal lasted barely a second and if she wasn‘t paying close attention to him, she might‘ve missed his absent state. The nagging feeling of recognition finally dissipated without his expression ever allowing any emotions to play out. "Alright then. Sit.“ His tone lacked the edge that would make his offered invitation sound like a command; nestled somewhere in the vast gap between disinterested and welcoming. Similar to how one might declare the time of day or talk about the news in the papers. 

Nodding towards the chair on the other side of the desk, Maxim unlocked and placed the tablet in front of her. The display lit up to show his first suggestion. A delicate floral design that stretched out vertically across the screen. Light pink peonies contrasted the rich, green color of the leaves and stems. While he had to admit he was proud of all the choices he was about to present to her, he liked the combination of colors for this particular one the most. 

After a fleeting glance at the display, Maxim looked over to her, his expression softening ever so slightly. He wanted to see her reaction, the slightest shift in her demeanor. „I‘d like to go over some points with you.“ Despite his voice keeping the even tone from earlier, there was something gentle in his words. 

Admittedly, bringing kindness across by conversing was never his forté and luckily neither of his jobs required much talking in the first place. But if he could show his appreciation for her help - to let her know that he didn‘t forget about the extra mile she went to make him feel better - the least he could do was use a kinder tone. Then again, it might also be the most he could do. 

“First off, I‘m Maxim. We might‘ve met a while back.“ His expression didn‘t show any signs of the question blaring through his mind and making him wonder just why he just said that. Even the part about his name, he‘d like to take back. Just for good measure.

“Is this your first tattoo?“ Part of him was hoping it was. There was something exciting about working with a blank canvas; setting the standard for any subsequent designs. 

“I‘ve looked at the inspiration pictures you sent in and prepared some possible designs in my style. You can look at them, tell me which one you prefer most and whether there are parts you‘d like to change or adjust.“ Without even a glance down to the device on the table, he slid a finger across the screen to show the next idea he drew. Flowers, whose names he could only name in his native language, formed a dainty bouquet in a fineline style. The colors were darker and more saturated, ranging from reds to purples and pinks with varying shades of green making up the leaves. 

“You‘re not going to hurt my feelings if you don‘t like something. Be honest with me and yourself and tell me if you don‘t like parts of the designs. I can change it as much as I need to on this,“ he nudged the tablet closer to her, bringing attention to the device he was referring to, “but not when it‘s under your skin.“ The words came out studied and emotionless - he repeated the previous passage over and over again. In fact, he made the exact same statement every time he was working with an unfamiliar client. 

Sliding through the designs, he made sure to give her some time to take a proper look at each before he raised an eyebrow in a question that remained silent until he spoke again. “Any of them look like what you imagined?”

Davina had wanted for a while to get a tattoo, even as a young girl. Raised by four beautiful women, one of her nannies had been native to Hawaii, and she had the most beautiful tattoo that covered her upper back and arms. If she had been allowed to, she would have had one ages ago, as she respected that woman and her reasoning behind a tattoo. However, it was forbidden by her father, and the women would never go against those rules.

By the time she got to the island, Davina was immediately thrusted into work. So busy with her life, that desire had not even registered nor the freedom to make that choice either. Davina finally found herself at a point in her life that everything was calmed, and after spotting someone else with one, she finally decided it was her chance to get one. Something simple and cute, especially that included flowers and plants. So, she did not hesitate to make the appointment.

When the day came, she started her day with a tea geared to help her with pain, knowing it should not cause any issues for her artist. So, she came to the tattoo parlor prepared and dressed for the occasion. Walking in the doors of the parlor, she spotted the man before her. Her eyes widened in recognition. Did she know his name? Absolutely, not. She did know that she had healed whim with her hands, some infection or ailment months, well at year ago? It had been some time.

Nodding her head, she looked down at him. The demigoddess could not remember much of what happened then, other than he had a bit of attitude. But, people aren't themselves when sick. Maybe, she still had a chance for a good experience. "Yes. My name is Davina. I'm here for my tattoo."
