smallville really liked to flirt with and dance around the idea of lex having severe mental health issues but only ever in ways where it was used to reinforce that lex was Doomed By The Narrative. lex was shown as having multiple psychotic breaks, including at least one instance in his youth where the only external catalyst was trauma, even going so far as to have him institutionalized over it, but always stops short of actually establishing him as a person who has a psychotic disorder because that might, you know, necessitate treating it with empathy.

brain go brrr with thoughts bc there was so much smallville could have explored with lex’s mental health but nope!

#this show loved to demonize mental illness so much you could almost forget it's a superman story and not a batman one #also re: your tags -- hard agree on him exhibiting a LOT of symptoms of bpd #esp re: his relationships with clark and lana #also yes i know one of said psychotic breaks was the result of him being drugged #but 1) it is not the first time we've seen lex exhibit symptoms of psychosis #and 2) if someone is *already prone* to paranoia and psychosis it makes it a hell of a lot easier to induce an episode like that #also imo if you come at the text from the perspective of lex having a history of psychosis #it paints his obsession with figuring out how he survived the car crash & how clark does the things he does in a new light #sorry i just get so brustrated about the treatment of mental illness in this show #lex luthor #smallville
