I rewatched 1982 sweeney todd with some people recently and now I’m just thinking about how much I love “kiss me”
#it’s just!!!!!! such a good song#I’m a sucker for sweet strings maybe#and also I just love patter#and it’s such a good break of like. a bright sincerity in the midst of#all the bleak irony that the show is#it gets to characterize Johanna (she’s a silly little ninnynoodle! without this song we would never have known!)#and sort of blink-and-you-miss-it hint at some parallels she shares with her mom#(he’s going to marry me!!! I’d rather poison myself!!!!)#i would say it’s probably the load-bearing song for the entire relationship between Anthony and Johanna even.#it elevates them from a typical ‘love at first sight’ couple to a more charming ‘love at first sight’ couple (at least for me)#because somehow the frenetic nature of the song mixed with the fervent eagerness between them creates charm#it’s similar to how mrs Lovett and Sweeney are charming despite literally inflicting cannibalism onto people#they’re just having so much fun and joking around with it and they think they’re sooooo funny#it’s charming#personal malkylife
