18th Birthday
Thanks @abbiescholler for the request, sorry its late.
A/n-OMG, tumblr, wattpad-Hello how are ya? It's been a crazy amount of time but omg it feels good to be back. I got this request way too long ago and I have some more free time now so here I am finally writing it. I missed y'all and I can't wait to revisit Riles and Lucas. Happy reading.
not proof read lol.
Riley skipped her way up the fire escape of her apartment, she was gleaming with excitement as her feet hit each step, her smile growing continuously. She reached the final step of the fire escape and slowly peered into the bay window, expecting to see her best friend and boyfriend patiently waiting to surprise her. However as her head slowly continued to look into the window she quickly realised neither of them were there. Her smile faltered slightly but she quickly brushed it off and considered that they were probably waiting for her inside. She jumped in through her bay window, her favourite starbucks drink that she had gone to get earlier in her hand, and grabbed her phone from her jean pocket. When she looked down at her phone she saw she had two texts from Maya and Lucas;
Lukey; Hey Riles, sorry I had to run out before you came back this morning, had to help my mum. Maybe see you tomorrow? xx
Maya; Won't b ova today Peaches, art stuff u get it, luv ya.
Riley sighed confused, 'Surely they didn't forget, this is way too 16 candles'. At that moment her Mother, Father and brother all burst in to her room, Balloons and cake in hand.
'HAPPY 18th RILEY' They screamed, partially in unison except for Auggie who glared at his parents because he thought they were yelling 'Happy birthday' instead. They all laughed at Auggie’s anger and gave Riley a hug.
'So sweetie, where are Lucas and Maya, I thought for sure they'd be here?' Topanga questioned while attempting to clean up Riley's room. She had grown to love cleaning Riley's room lately because it meant she could snoop on whether Lucas had stayed the night or not. She always laughed at how discrete Riley and Lucas thought they were being, but really they were anything but subtle, whether it was clothing left behind or both sides of the doona where clearly slept on. Topanga truly didn't care if Lucas did want to stay the night, the kids had just never asked her.
'No they're not here, I left this morning to get a drink and I swore they'd be here when I got back. I think they're pretending they forgot.' Riley sulked, she really didn't want to believe they forgot, but Lucas and Maya were horrible liars and it's unlikely they could pull off a big surprise, especially not later in the day. They usually would get too excited and cave before 10am.
'Look, I'm sure the group is just surprising you, I mean have you heard from Farkle, Smackle or Zay yet?' Cory questioned, he was quite concerned considering he really hadn't heard anything about a surprise from the group, so he wasn't really sure if their actually was one.
'I guess not, you're probably right, and maybe they just wanted me to have a morning with my family alone' The family burst into laughter at this statement, Maya and Lucas wanting Riley to be alone with her family and not spend time with them? It was unheard of. Alas, Riley brushed it off considering that she hadn't heard from anyone else and there's no way they'd all forgot. She scrolled through her facebook timeline as her family left to go make breakfast when a facetime notification popped up on her phone.
FARKLEY <3
Riley quickly answered hoping it had something to do with her surprise and was greeted by the faces of Zay, Smackle and Farkle.
'Happy birthday sugar.' She heard Zay yell from the back. Smackle quickly turned around and hit Zay on the arm.
'Zay, we promised Farkle he could say happy birthday first.' She scolded and Zay just rolled his eyes.
'Look, I'm new to the group, I've gotta let Riley know I care the most so I'm the favourite.' He retorted making Riley giggle. It was at this point that Farkle turned around and hit Zay.
'Zay, are you fucking serious, you've been our friend for two years and you still aren't the favourite, it's not gonna happen.'
'Umm guys hello.' Riley yelled as the three friends started to bicker.
'Sorry sugar, I know Lucas is the favourite cause ya know' Zay stated winking through the phone making everyone roll their eyes.
'Anyway happy birthday Riley, can we come up, are Maya and Lucas done with their surprise?' Farkle questioned through the phone.
'What surprise?' Riley inquired.
'We all just figured Lucas and Maya where surprising you, that's why we didn't come over. Now that I think of it they never mentioned it.' Farkle replied while climbing through Riley's window with Smackle and Zay in tow.
Riley got up from her bed and quickly hugged her friends who all had a balloon each and a big teddy bear. They all sat back down in the bay window and looked around for any sign of Lucas and Maya.
'Surely they didn't forgot, its your 18th. Although I mean now that I think of it Lucas didn't say anything, I thought it was just cause I can't keep a secret. But surely you brought it up Riles, you mentioned it to me like 8 times.' Zay spoke attempting to comfort Riley.
'I never brought it up around him cause I thought he was planning a surprise and I didn't want him to spoil it.' Riley peered sadly, she had accepted it, they must have just forgot. The group sat for a moment contemplating the situation, had the others really forgot?
'Well, for now let's do something fun, how about your favourite activity, Mini golf?' Farkle beamed and the group jumped up and ran out the window.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Riley stumbled into her bedroom at 8 after going out with her friends. After mini golf Riley had still heard nothing from Lucas and Maya, so in an attempt to cheer her up, while Smackle and Farkle weren't looking,  Zay gave Riley some alcohol he had bought with his fake ID. Although Riley thought she was fine, the tequila had really hit her just as she reached home and she was now feeling really tipsy. She burst open her door and jumped onto her bed feeling a little lethargic. Just as she was closing her eyes she looked up and saw Lucas walking slowly out of her closet.
'Hi sweet girl' Lucas hummed walking over and embracing Riley. As soon as Riley was enclosed in his arms the smell of alcohol hit his nostrils and he jumped back.
'Riley-' He started but she bounced up and slapped and his arm.
'You're silly you forgot my birthday' She pouted her arms folded on her chest. It was at this point she had realised that Riley was most definitely drunk.
'Maya' Lucas called causing Maya to slid out from under Riley's bed.
'Ok, Huckleberry what don't you understand about pretend you forgot and I'll jump out in twenty and surprise her' Maya sassed pulling out her airpods.
'No Maya, abort mission she's drunk' Lucas spoke ushering to Riley who was singing and playing with her hair.
'NO fair, you said I couldn't get her drunk' Maya pouted hitting Lucas.
'OWW, no I didn't get her drunk, it must have been Zay.'
'Oh, well mad respect he did what I wasn't brave enough to do.' Maya beamed while pumping her fist to the sky. Lucas rolled his eyes and looked down at Riley, pushing her hair out of her face.
'Well what are we gonna do now?' Lucas questioned.
'I mean she had her fun today, let's just take her up there and sleep, she can see it in the morning.' Maya replied. Lucas picked Riley up as she was now silently sleeping and walked her to the roof, he placed her down right in the middle of himself and Maya and kissed her on the forehead.
'Night beautiful, Happy birthday'.
------------------------------
Riley woke up with a pounding headache, she groaned as she slowly opened her eyes. It wasn't for a second that she noticed that the sun was quite a lot brighter than usual. She stretched her arms out expecting to be in her bed but instead was met by two hard objects.
'Ow', Lucas groaned after Riley's fist connected with his face. Maya laughed as she looked over at the exact moment that Riley's fist had connected.
'What are you two doing here. Why are we outside?' Riley questioned looking around. They were on the roof of their building laying on about 20 pillows and a large tarp was in front of them.
'Well princess, if you hadn't have gone out and gotten smashed, this was your birthday surprise.' Lucas replied kissing her hand.
'Yeah it's not gonna work now but we set this up with a projector we bought you and we were gonna watch your favourite movies, we still can we just have to wait till tonight .' Maya laughed pointing to the projector.
'That's why we had to hold off seeing you, we wouldn't have been able to not tell you for that long, plus we wanted some suspense and for you to spend some time with your family.' Lucas followed, embracing Riley in a small hug.
Riley stiffled a laugh and replied, 'I love you guys, even if your surprises never work out'. They all laughed and hugged each other while Riley looked over at her 'Happy birthday' sign. Best birthday ever, she thought to herself.
A/n Ok so thanks for reading, I can't believe these characters would be all grown up now, its crazy. I had no idea where to go with this but it carried well I feel. Let me know and send prompts, I have one to do which hopefully I'll do soon.

New Year’s Day
Summary: With Cory and Topanga celebrating the New Years with Feeny, and Auggie spending the night at Ava's, a lonely Riley Matthews invites her boyfriend, Lucas Friar, over for the night to celebrate with her!
- ONE SHOT -
December 31st. 6:00pm. 2017.
Riley Matthews, now a sophomore, spends her first ever New Years celebration by herself. Her parents, Cory and Topanga were invited to spend the event in Philly with their teacher of 16 years, Mr. George Feeny. It was a tough decision to make for the couple, but Riley thought that they really deserve this trip and eventually convinced them that she was responsible enough to take care of their home, without throwing some sort of wild party behind their backs. She’s not that kind of person anyways. “Behaving is fun,” she had once said.
Auggie, on the other hand, is spending the night with his so called “wife and in-laws.” It bummed Riley out that she would be alone, but Auggie was genuinely excited and was definitely looking forward to it.
She almost calls up her friends, but then remembers that they’re off somewhere celebrating with their families, even Maya, who happens to be spending her first New Years celebration with a complete household.
She thinks for a moment, grabs her phone anyways and rings her boyfriend.
“Riley? What’s up?”
“Lucas, hi! You guys in Texas yet?”
Lucas and his family planned on flying down to Texas to visit his old Pappy Joe, so that they could celebrate together.
He lets out a sigh into his phone. “No. An emergency came up at work, so Mom had to leave and have that taken care of. Dad left this morning to God knows where. He said he’d be back by 12, but he’s still hasn’t come home… So basically all our plans for New Years Eve have been blown off.”
Irritation takes over Riley. She despises Lucas’s father. She doesn’t hate him. She just ends up being disappointed in him over and over again. He leaves, and we all know it’s never to work. He comes back home around 4 in the morning practically everyday. He’s constantly fighting with his wife, who is basically the only one keeping their household going, in terms of finance and whatnot. Riley knows that if Lucas could get a job, he’d apply in a heartbeat. His mother refuses it, though. She always told him to focus on his studies.
“I’m so sorry to hear that…” Riley whispers.
“Me too.”
“Say, why don’t you celebrate with me? I mean, my parents are out on a weekend couples trip and Auggie is with Ava… You can come in and spend the night if you’d like.”
“Really?”
“Of course!”
“Thanks, Riley.”
“No need to thank me, I’m just killing two birds with one stone!”
“Alright, I’ll be there in a few.”
“Can’t wait.”
And with that, they both ended the call.
Riley always loved having her boyfriend around, so she is certain that this’ll probably be one of the best New Year celebrations she’ll ever have.
---
It took Lucas a little longer than expected to arrive, judging by the fact that his building isn’t so far away from the Matthews’. But when Lucas shows up at the other side of the bay window, Riley smiles at him just as she would if he’d come earlier or on time or ever, really.
She lets him in, giving room for him to crawl inside.
“Hey, you.” He says with a grin.
“Hi, yourself!” She wraps her arms around his neck, giving him a soft kiss. When she pulls away, she looks down at Lucas’s duffle bag. “You stayin’ the night?”
“Yeah, is that okay?”
“When has it not been?” she giggles. Lucas stares at her. “What?”
“Nothin’,” he mutters. “I’m just glad that I’m spending tonight with you.”
“Aw, Lucas!” She gives him a quick kiss.
Suddenly, the doorbell rings.
“Are you expecting anyone?”
“Pizza guy. He’s spending tonight with us as well!” Riley jokes as Lucas laughs sarcastically.
Riley leaves the room to fetch their pizza, with Lucas trailing behind her. Once the pizza guy leaves, they both plop down on the couch.
“Finally… I’m starving!” she exclaims, opening the box. As they’re eating their food, they discuss their plans for the evening.
“We should go up to the roof to watch the fireworks.” Lucas suggests.
“Ooh, great idea! But until then?”
“Well,” he scoots closer to her. “We enjoy each other’s company.”
“That shouldn’t be an issue for us.” Riley smiles.
“Never has been.”
From then on, Riley and Lucas did everything they could possibly do to kill time. They played board games, watched cat videos (under Riley’s request, of course), and they talked. A lot. They were always into those deep, meaningful conversations. They were great at those. Later on, Lucas proposes watching a scary film.
“No.”
“C’mon, Riley.”
“Lucas, I'm not planning on having any nightmares tonight!”
“Hey, we spent about a good two hours watching cat videos.”
“Ugh, fine.” Then a smirk appears on her face and her tone changes as she starts to speak. “I get scared at scary movies. You’ll protect me though, won’t you Lucas?” She does a little pose and blinks ferociously. Lucas laughs at her Missy Bradford impersonation.
“No thanks, Missy. It’s Riley who I’m protecting tonight.”
“Aww.” She says losing Missy’s voice. She rests her head on his shoulder, both reclining into the couch. “In that case, what are we watching?”
Took them awhile to find a movie, but they finally agreed on The Conjuring. Before the movie starts, Riley goes into her room to fetch a blanket. Then, she snuggles next to Lucas.
Halfway into the film, Riley’s beyond frightened to the point where she begged for a break from it.
“Lucas! Turn it off, turn it off!” She cries, hiding underneath the blanket.
He immediately does so. “Are you okay?!”
She uncovers herself and sighs. “How do you endure these? Especially when seeing them with Zay or Maya!”
He chuckles. “Well, to be honest, I do get quite frightened. But then, I remind myself that it’s not real. And now I’m reminding you… It’s not real, Riley.”
“I guess so. But I am still scarred, and that’s all thanks to you.” She jokes. “Hey, wait. What time is it?”
Lucas pulls out his phone. “10:58. We should get dressed.”
“Oh, we’re getting dressed?” Riley asks in confusion.
“Well, we’re not starting the new year looking like this, are we now?” Riley looks down at herself. She’s in her red John Q. Adams shirt, that still surprisingly fits, and sweats. Lucas has on a lousy sweater and a pair of plain old jeans, but he still manages to look dashing as ever.
“I guess not.”
“Alright, I’m gonna go get changed in the bathroom.”
“Umm, okay?” And with that, he gets up and leaves.
Huh… Okay then. She thinks to herself.
---
Riley’s thankful that Lucas has them both get ready an hour before. It takes awhile for her to pamper herself. First, she throws on a sparkly red dress. She then curls her hair. Afterwards, she puts on makeup. And finally, she slips into her boots.
She’s just about ready to grab her coat and head out of her bedroom until she gets a FaceTime call request from Topanga.
“Hi, honey! Wow, you look gorgeous! Do you have plans? We never talked about you going out…”
“I’m actually going to see the fireworks up on the roof with Lucas.”
And in a blink of an eye, a paranoid Cory Matthews pops up in the screen.
“WHAT?”
“Riley, isn’t he supposed to be in Texas right now?” Her mom questions.
She sighs. “Something came up. They had to cancel.”
From Riley’s expression, her parents get the idea. Cory loses his paranoia.
“We understand.” He says calmly. He eventually goes back into protective father mode in a split second. “But if you two are doing things that you aren’t supposed to be doing…”
“Cory!”
“I’m just saying, honey…”
“Ugh, ignore your father.” Topanga says looking into the camera.
Riley smiles into the screen, thinking about how she’s definitely not bringing up the fact that her boyfriend is staying the night.
“Just have a good time, okay? We really wish you could be spending tonight with us!”
“Me too, momma. Well, I should get going.”
“Okay. Bye!”
“See you soon!” she says before ending the call. She checked the time. 11:45. She really should get going.
Riley grabs her coat and rushes out into the living room. “Lucas?!” He isn’t there.
“Huh.” Given the fact that she was just watching one of the most frightening films of her life, she’s scared that a crazy demonic monster would pop up from behind her.
Riley finally notices a single rose and a notecard lying on top of their coffee table. She grabs them both and reads the card.
“Follow the rose petals.” She offers a glance at the trail of rose petals behind the table, leading out into the hallway.
Riley being Riley, she did what she’s told. She followed the path of rose petals, which lead her up a couple flights of stairs, and eventually to the rooftop.
She gasps out of exhaustion when she reaches the top, but her eyes widen as she takes a good look at what’s in front of her. The rooftop had been decorated with what seems to be an endless supply of fairy lights, along with a bunch of New Years-themed decor. And in the middle of all that, waits a charming young boy who holds a little bouquet of roses. The boy who Riley fell in love with ever since she fell onto his lap on the subway.
“Riley…”
“Lucas,” Because you can make a Riley Matthews cry very easily, her eyes become all glossy. “Y-You did this?”
“All of it, yeah.” He chuckles.
This is probably why he was late. Riley thought to herself.
She walks up to him and gives him a big hug. “Thank you.” She whispers into his chest.
“Of course.” He pulls away. “Hey, why are you crying?”
“Well, how can I not be? This is all so magnificent!” Her tone softens. “I’m lucky.”
He grins, giving the bouquet to Riley. “That makes both of us.”
Lucas then walks over to grab a vintage boombox from the side. He places it on the bench and pops in a tape. Riley’s favorite piano piece then starts playing.
“Gymnopedie… How did you know?”
“You told me a while back, actually. We were taking a walk through the city, late at night. And we saw that man, he looked homeless-”
“And he was playing it on his old wooden piano.” Riley says in realization.
“Yes. And you see, there was this dance too…” He extends his hand out.
---
The old man was French. “S'il vous plaît danser ensemble comme je joue.” He said with a friendly smile.
Riley didn’t understand what he said. “I’m sorry, sir. I’m not quite sure what you sai-”
“Riley, he wants us to dance while he plays.” But Lucas did.
“Oh.” She smiled.
And they did. They danced the night away, and this lead to being one of the most memorable moments in their relationship. It wasn’t big, but it was magical.
--- Riley sets the roses down and takes Lucas by the hand. He grabs her by her waist, pulling her closer, as she wraps her arms around his neck.
“I’ve probably said this far too many times, but thank you. Thank you for everything. You really made this year a real good one for me.” Riley expresses.
Lucas stays silent for a bit. “My favorite thing in the world is when I talk to you,”
“So I’ve been told.”
“It’s not just that, though. You’ve always been there for me.” He pauses. “You’ve stood by me through my darkest moments, especially when my family’s having issues… Riley, you just make me the happiest. I’m beyond grateful for you and I’m not really sure that I can repay for all that you’ve done for me.” Riley smiles. Lucas has told her this so many times and in so many different ways.
Seconds after their song ended, the crowd below them starts screaming. The pair walked over to the ledge to take a look.
“It’s time to count down!”
“10, 9, 8…”
“Hey, Riley.”
“Yeah?”
“It’s a couple seconds till 2018, and I’m glad you’re here with me.”
“7, 6, 5…”
“I’m always with you.” Riley offers him a smile. “You and me. Next year?”
“4, 3, 2, 1… Happy New Year!!!” The crowd goes wild as Auld Lang Syne somehow starts playing.
“Bring it.” Lucas finally responds.

Chapter One: Baldr
Baldr: Norse god of beauty, love, peace, and light
Riley and Maya made it to their astronomy class with only seconds to spare.  They quickly slid into their seats as their professor stood up in order to begin her lecture.
As Riley opened her notebook, she heard the person next to her whisper her name.  A soft smile slowly formed at the corners of her lips the moment she heard it.  Only one person had ever said her name in quite that manner.  It sounded so beautiful, so loving, and so incredibly sensual.  She had never considered her name any of those things, but coming from his lips, they were all three and so much more.
She slowly turned her head around as her smile widened.  “Hi,” she whispered.
“Hey,” Lucas smiled as her eyes met his.  He knew without even having to ask that his girlfriend had overslept that morning.  Her hair was wavy and slightly frizzed instead of either curled or straightened.  While he loved every single hairstyle she attempted, he knew that she only ever wore her hair like that when she didn’t have time to do anything else with it.  Not that it mattered.  She could shave her head and he’d still find her to be the most beautiful woman in the world.
Riley Matthews.  Even the mere thought of her caused his heart to do a backflip.  She was the girl of his dreams, who had, by some miracle, deemed him worthy enough to become her boyfriend.  Now, two years after the conversation that led to their reunion, he couldn’t possibly imagine his life without her in it.  Somehow, they had managed to survive everything that had been thrown at them in high school.  All of that pain, all of that misunderstanding seemed like another lifetime ago.  They were so much stronger now.  They were so much closer now.  The last two years had easily been the happiest Lucas had ever known, and a lot of it was due to the brown-eyed girl seated next to him.
He wasn’t quite sure where they were headed that night in the auditorium at Roosevelt High.  They agreed to take everything slowly this time.  The last thing either of them wanted was to repeat the mistakes that had ripped them apart.  So, they started over.  It was strange at first.  They knew how they felt about one another, and there was an entire history that neither of them wanted to forget, but they slowly learned to let go.  They slowly learned to forgive themselves for the parts they played in their own self-destruction.
They went on a handful of dates before Lucas left for Texas that summer.  Before he left, Riley didn’t ask if she could visit him over the summer.  She wasn’t quite sure if it would be too presumptuous of her or if it would put him in an awkward position since they agreed to take it slowly.  Two weeks after he left, he mentioned the hill to her and how much he missed those evenings spent with her under the stars.  In the same breath, he told her that Farkle and Zay were going to see him at the beginning of August and that he was wondering if she and Maya would consider joining them.
He barely got the words out before she told him that Maya and she would be happy to go with them.
He must have told himself a thousand times before they arrived that he was going to continue to slow things down with her, but as soon as he saw her at the gate, the only thought that ran through his mind was how much he had missed her over the summer.  She was the last thought he had before he fell asleep and the first thought he had every morning.  He knew that the reason they had agreed to take it slowly was because they were both petrified of losing one another again.  He wanted to respect their agreement, but halfway through their visit, on one exceptionally starry night and at the same spot where they confessed their love for one another 15 months earlier, he asked her to be his girlfriend.
He knew that no matter what happened to him for the rest of his life, he would always remember the look on her face as she slowly turned her head toward him and blessed his vision with the biggest smile he had ever seen from her. Now, 21 months later, he knew that he had never been happier.  The girl next to him had completely changed his entire outlook on life.  Four years ago, he only saw the darkness, with no possible way out, but now, everything around him seemed so much brighter.  Life couldn’t possibly be any better than it was now, and it was due in large part to her.  She taught him how to forgive, how to have hope.  Those traits allowed Lucas to start down the long path to forgiveness with his father.  The former dread he felt at the prospect of seeing his father had slowly morphed into excitement.  Their relationship wasn’t perfect, but now he looked forward to spending time with him.  The man had changed, but Lucas would have never been able to give him the chance to prove it were it not for the goddess next to him.
He tore his eyes away from her long enough to reach for the folded up piece of paper on his desk.  When he glanced back at her, he stretched his arm out toward her before he looked down at the note in his hand.
Riley furrowed her eyebrows.  A note?  She could count on one hand—and have a few fingers left over—at how many times Lucas had written her a note in the last two years.  As she reached for the piece of notebook paper in his hand, her fingers lightly brushed against his.  He had entered her life over three years ago.  She knew that she should be more than used to his touch at this point, but she wasn’t.  A small chill rippled through her as she took the note from him. She could feel her cheeks redden as she turned back around in her seat.
Lucas felt it too—that little jolt of electricity that always hit him whenever he touched any part of her.  He used to be afraid of it—not the sensation, but what it meant.  He used to be so afraid to let anyone in, especially her.  She seemed to be completely bathed in the light while he had dwelled in the darkness for most of his life.  He tried to run from her, from them, but fate stepped in again and again.  Whenever his stubbornness forced himself to pull away from her, his heart only longed for her more.  They had been to hell and back, and now here they were, both happy and free from the chains that had weighed them down.
Riley slid the paper in her lap before she slowly opened it.  The classroom was perfectly silent aside from the lecture Dr. Harris was giving.  She didn’t want to bring any attention to herself, so she took her time unfolding the note.
One she got it open, she looked down:
‘I know we have to help Maya with her photography project this afternoon, but I was hoping that we could have dinner tonight—just us?  I have a surprise for you.
Love, Lucas’
Riley bit her bottom lip as she slowly folded up the note.  She turned her head back to Lucas and had to bite her lip even harder to keep herself from grinning like an idiot.  They had been dating for nearly two years, but that didn’t stop every nerve in her body from being thrilled at the prospect of going on a date with him.
Lucas lifted his eyebrows as he waited for an answer from her.  When she slowly nodded her head, he couldn’t help but to grin in response.
Maybe she remembered what today was, maybe she didn’t.  Either way, it didn’t matter.  He remembered, and was determined to make tonight a night she won’t forget.
“When you said you needed help, I didn’t know that it meant that I had to actually be in the photos,” Lucas told Maya as he helped her and Riley get their room set up.  It had taken the three of them about an hour to throw up the black drapes and set up the lighting in their room.  He was beyond ready to be done with it all so he could ensure that everything was set up for his surprise later, but little did he know that Maya had a surprise of her own.
Maya crinkled her nose as she tried to brace herself for his complete rejection of her plan.  “Well, if I told you that, I feel like you wouldn’t be here.” She spun around as she busied herself with closing the drapes.  Maybe if they approached it matter-of-factly, he wouldn’t have much room to refuse to help her?
Lucas glanced at his girlfriend.  He furrowed his eyebrows when he noticed that she had begun to fidget.  She only did that when she was in the middle of a scheme.  “Did you know about this?”
“Umm,” she tucked a piece of hair behind her ear as she turned away from him, “maybe.”
He had no choice but to chuckle at the sudden burst of meekness from her.  “Maybe?”  He turned back to Maya.  If Riley was too embarrassed to be straightforward with him, then he knew that whatever he was supposed to do would be, at best, awkward.  “So, what’s the assignment?”
Maya sighed.  “We have to convey one word into a single photograph.  Everyone received a different word and 30% of my final grade is going to be if the other students in my class can accurately guess the word.”
He frowned.  “Ok,” he answered slowly.  He wasn’t sure why Maya seemed so anxious about the project.  He knew that painting was her forte, but from every conversation he had with the blonde over the last few months, she had really enjoyed photography.  Obviously, he would help his friend with her assignment, but why the secrecy?  “What’s the word?”
“Love.”  Her lips formed a thin line.  That pesky four-letter word seemed to be her Achilles’ heel, and apparently everyone around her knew that little fact—well, at least her photography teacher caught on to it.  She sighed when she looked at the couple before her.  “While I…don’t think I’ve…experienced it yet, I know that you two have been in love with one another from the moment you met.  So, I knew that my best shot of getting an A on this project is if I captured you two together.”
He glanced at Riley once more.  That didn’t seem so bad.  In fact, he felt a little flattered that Maya came to them to help her with their project, especially considering the subject matter.  “What do you want us to do?”
She shrugged.  She had an idea of what she wanted to do, but she wasn’t about to press her luck.  She was already grateful enough that he didn’t immediately shut down her idea.  “Just be yourselves.  Act like I’m not here.”
Riley looked up at Lucas before both turned to Maya.  Neither one of them had any idea what that even meant.
Maya wrinkled her nose at her own words.  “Ok, well, know that I’m here, but just…focus on each other or something.  Don’t…Don’t do whatever it is that you two do when you’re alone.”
Riley groaned.  “Maya…do you really think that we would completely forget that you were in the room…taking pictures of us, no less?”
Maya bit the inside of her cheek.  “Actually, I sorta have an idea.”  She waited a beat as she looked back and forth between the pair.  “But you really need to trust me.”  Neither of them had any idea what she was about to ask them to do, but she hoped that they would understand that they were merely creating a work of art.
“Are you still uncomfortable,” Riley asked Lucas as Maya struggled to reload the film in her camera.  Riley knew that it was a ridiculous question, but it was one she felt she had to ask just to break the awkwardness that seemed to hang over the entire room.  She couldn’t believe that Maya was able to talk Lucas into taking his shirt off in order to take the pictures.  Even more unbelievable was the fact that Maya was able to convince her to remove her own shirt.  The blonde tried to reason that it was as if she were wearing a bathing suit top and that it wasn’t a big deal.  All of the appropriate parts were still covered up, and besides, Riley clad in a bra wasn’t anything Lucas or Maya hadn’t seen before.  It wasn’t until Maya began to shoot them that Riley realized why the blonde hadn’t enlisted Zay or Farkle’s help with the set up.  There was no way she or Lucas would subject themselves to this with their friends around.
“I feel like anyone would be uncomfortable being half naked while their girlfriend’s best friend took pictures of them,” he laughed nervously as he turned his head toward her.  “Let alone laying in my girlfriend’s bed while said best friend takes pictures of us.”  It was more than a little weird, but at least Maya hadn’t asked them to completely pose in their underwear.  The pictures were only from the waist up, which did ease her anxious subjects.  Maya reminded them more than once that she owed them for this, and Lucas made sure to tell her that she needed to remember this moment because he knew at some point, he would have to collect on said favor.
“Crap,” Maya mumbled as she struggled with the film in her hands.  “Um…you guys stay there, ok?  The film got jammed, and I need to go find Sadie to help me with this stupid thing.”  Before Riley or Lucas could protest, Maya sprinted from the room.
“I’m half naked too, you know,” Riley offered as she turned her body to face him.  “Besides, we are helping her out, you know.  She’s been worried about this project for weeks.”
He gave her a half smile.  “Love, huh?”
She smiled sheepishly at him.  “Yeah.”
“I like it.”  He raised his hand to her face before he lightly rubbed her cheek.  “I like being known as that couple.”
“Me too,” she admitted as she reveled in his soft touch.
“So,” he looked up at her hair, which had been swept up into a loose bun.  “You overslept this morning?”
Riley furrowed her eyebrows.  She didn’t remember telling him that.  Had Maya said something to him when she was out of the room?  “How did you know?”
He thought about telling her that he noticed every little thing she did, but the last thing he wanted to do was freak her out.  They had been together for two years, and had several heart felt conversations about their feelings for one another, but he also knew that there were some things that were better left unsaid.  So, he simply smiled as he felt her fingers interlace with his.  “A lucky guess.”
Maya couldn’t believe that she had to go ask Sadie for help with reloading the film.  An entire semester in photography class and it was the first time she couldn’t get it the stupid camera to work.  She sighed as she reached the door to her room.  She wouldn’t be surprised if Riley and Lucas bailed since it took half an hour to track her friend down to get it fixed.
As soon as Maya opened the door, she froze.  Laying on Riley’s bed were Riley and Lucas—both asleep, their hands clasped together over their heads.  Riley’s free hand rested on Lucas’s chest as they faced one another.
Maya smiled as she quietly shut the door behind her.  She held the camera up to her eye.  This is exactly what Ms. Miller was talking about: a candid moment that seemed to speak volumes.  Even the pessimist in Maya had to admit that the sight before her was nothing short of beautiful.  Both were asleep, seemingly unaware of the fact that even in their subconscious, they had to maintain some sort of physical contact with one another.  In high school, she wasn’t sure that she knew what love was—or even if it existed—but the couple in front of her taught her that not only was love the most powerful gift humans were capable of, but also that when you find it, you hold on to it for dear life.
As she snapped a few shots, she silently prayed that they would turn out half as beautiful as the vision before her.  ‘Maybe one day I’ll find that,’ she thought to herself as she looked at the couple through the viewfinder.

sign my yearbook?
riley’s been hiding her feelings for farkle for far too long. it’s the end of senior year and everyone is signing yearbooks. it’s now or never, riley.
riley matthews sat in front of the bright computer screen in the uncomfortable but familiar desk chair. she was putting the final touches on the last yearbook she’d ever work on. it was satisfying and saddening all at once.
as she clicked through the pages, she felt like high school was gone faster than riley could count to ten. she could still recall the first day of her freshman year, and how the halls felt so much bigger then. riley and her friends were seniors now. soon, they’d be moving on and closing this crazy but wonderful chapter of their lives.
she was lost in thought, reminiscing about the last four years of her life when the classroom door opened and broke her daydream.
“hey, riley. sorry i’m late. the math club meeting ran longer than i thought it would. what are you doing and how can i help?” farkle asked with a smile.
“i’m just looking over the last few pages and thinking about the last few years of our lives.”
“i can help with both of those things!” he said as he sat beside her. “we’ve had some good times, haven’t we?”
“yes, yes we have,” she grinned.
“so, after proofing these pages we’re done?”
“i think so. i don’t see anything else that needs changing but i’ve been looking at the pages too long, can you check before we finalize it?”
farkle nodded his head and went to work. his brow furrowed as he concentrated and riley caught herself staring at him. he ran a hand through his hair. he straightened his back. she traced his profile with her gaze, his face illuminated with the white light of the screen in front of them. she looked at his hands on the wooden desk. she thought about holding them for the millionth time. how long was she going to keep her feelings from him?
“can you hand me that folder over there?” he asked pointing to riley’s left and breaking the silence.
“here you go.” she handed it to him.
their hands touched and lingered for moment before farkle shuffled through the papers inside the folder. that alone was enough to send a kaleidoscope of butterflies to her stomach. riley bit her lip and looked down, in case her face gave away what she was going on inside. did he feel electricity in his fingers the way she did?
“thanks. you know what i just realized? this is the last time we’ll ever be sitting here after school.”
“i know! before you got here, i was just thinking ‘this is the last time farkle will be late to a yearbook meeting!’ and i thought about how great it’ll be to not have to wait on you,” she teased, quickly putting aside her feelings. she was used to it by now.
“hey! i have a lot of things to do! and i’m not always late! and even if am late, i’m always here! riley, have i ever not been here for you when you need me?” he put his hand on her knee.
“no. you’re always here, farkle,” she said, trying to ignore her rapid heartbeat. “always.”
//
the yearbooks were being distributed and riley couldn’t help but feel a little emotional. she loved being editor and part of her didn’t ever want that to end. she looked around as the students passed their yearbooks to one another, pulling out pens and markers to sign them. they flipped through the pages and looked for themselves and their friends. she saw farkle walking towards her, yearbook in hand.
“hey, riley. sign my yearbook? you’re the last person i need a signature from."
"of course! but, i’m going to need some time. this is, you know, the last time i will ever sign a yearbook for you and a simple 'see ya later! have a great summer!’ won’t do. do you mind if i keep it for the rest of the day?"
"take as long as you need,” he said.
“coincidentally, you’re also the last person i need a signature from."
"well, if that’s the case, i’d like to take your yearbook for the day, as well, if it’s alright with you."
"it most definitely is.”
//
farkle, we’ve been friends since… no, too predictable.
i want to thank you for being my friend… no, too formal.
let’s always stay in touch… yikes.
dearest farkley,… okay, no. you cannot start telling him you love him by calling him farkley. just speak from the heart, matthews. come on. you can do it.
farkle,  your presence in my life has meant the world to me. i know you’ve loved me since the first grade. and you know i love you, but it’s time you know how. i’m sorry it took me so long to figure it out, even sorrier it took me this long to let you know. i love you with no restrictions, limits, or restraints. in turtlenecks and in black hoodies. on earth, pluto, mars, or any other planet in every other galaxy. i never want you not in my life. my mom told me once that love is a choice. it’s choosing someone over and over. well, if that’s true, then you’re the only choice. no contest. you make everything better and brighter. i love you. i’m in love with you. always, riley
she put her pen down and sighed. what was done was done. she wrote it down and there was no going back now.
riley dreaded the next day at school. she walked into the building and saw her friends standing by her dad’s classroom. she locked eyes with farkle and swore she couldn’t feel her legs anymore. by the end of the day, he’d know how she felt.
“hey, here you go.” he handed over the yearbook. "are you done writing yet? i’m really looking forward to reading what you wrote me.“
"i am, but can you promise me something?"
"anything."
"don’t read it until you get home.”
“is everything okay?"
"everything’s fine. just promise me, please?"
"i promise.”
she gave him his yearbook and the matter was officially out of her hands.
//
“he’s probably already read it, maya,” riley declared.
the pair were sitting in the bay window, with riley’s head in maya’s lap.
“no, he hasn’t. he’s farkle. he promised. and we know he’s not home yet, so he hasn’t read it."
"he read it and he doesn’t feel the same and he feels weird and i ruined our friendship and everyone’s plans for the summer and nothing will ever be the same ever again and it’s all my fault and–"
"breathe, riles! i’m sure only one of those things is true."
"which one?"
"nothing will ever be the same, but for the better. trust me."
"maya, i need farkle in my life. what if he doesn’t need me?” she asked quietly.
“farkle needs you just as much, maybe more,” she assured her.
“i gotta get going, honey. i’ll be back tomorrow morning. call me if you need anything.”
“thanks, peaches. be safe.”
maya climbed out the window and disappeared from view. riley took her yearbook out of her backpack and sat on her bed. she flipped through the pages for the millionth time. when riley had first read farkle’s note in her yearbook, she found it hard not to be upset. what he’d written was lovely, but far from the declaration of love she’d hoped he’d write to match her own.
she leaned back and stared at the ceiling. there was nothing riley could do but wait.
//
after a while, she heard her window open.
“you’re back already, maya?” she asked without looking.
“umm… no,” he said.
“farkle. hi,” she said as she sat up.
“hi,” he said. he took a seat next to her and said nothing else.
riley couldn’t wait for him to break the silence anymore. “listen, i know i shouldn’t have written all that. we’ve been friends for years and i don’t want that to change and if—"
"riley!"
"yes?”
“can i talk?"
"okay."
"we’ve been friends for a very long time. we’ve grown up together. and as we’ve grown, a lot of things have changed. we’ve all learned and evolved and had all these experiences, but there’s one thing that hasn’t ever changed. i don’t think i realized it until recently, but maybe part of me has always known. i never said anything because after all this time i never thought you’d feel the same, but i have been in love with you since the first grade, riley. i always will be."
"really?” was all riley could say. her eyes were bright.
“really.” he smiled and held her hand.
“so, where do we go from here? i mean, we graduate in a few weeks. we have the summer, and then what?"
"i don’t know. but for now? you and me? that sounds perfect."
"you and me,” she confirmed, “and maya."
that made him laugh. "yes, of course, and maya.”

CHAPTER SIX
"Well, that was an interesting dinner."
Riley was in the middle of grabbing books from her locker when a familiar voice cut through her thoughts. Looking up in surprise, she gave a small smile when she saw Lucas leaning against the lockers. He looked handsome with his piercing green eyes and short dirty blonde hair. She felt she was staring at him for too long and it made him chuckle. She blushed and finally looked away.
"I'm so sorry." Wrinkling her nose in embarrassment, Riley closed the locker door shut. "I know my family can be weird, especially my Dad."
A light chuckle escaped him once again, which made her look up at him curiously. "No worries. Your family is great, Riley. I had a good time."
She smiled in relief, her gaze softening in his. "I did too."
Lucas didn't bother to hide his own smirk as he naturally fell into step with her down the hallways of Thomas Jefferson Prep. Behind them, Riley could faintly hear the whispers. They were clear but subtle voices and she knew what they were talking about. She also noticed a lot of the girls were openly staring at him.
"Hi, Lucas."
"Morning, Lucas."
"Hello, Lucas."
The girls greeted and smiled at him warmly as Lucas made his way through; seemingly eager to have him around for reasons he knew but thought it best to play oblivious. He politely smiled at them before gluing his gaze back on the ground. Riley had to press her lips together from laughing when she heard their squeals.
"Wow…who knew you're so popular with the ladies." She teased and grinned when Lucas gave her a death glare. "What?! It's not exactly a bad thing. You have…options." She giggled, warranting an un-amused look from him as they ascended up the stairs.
"Stop it." He said, but even he can't help but smile about it.
They reached the second floor and entered the main dining hall before the lunch bell rang. Students began to poor into the room by the tens and twenties, the warm aroma of gourmet food served in buffet style filling their noses. Lucas and Riley stood in line with trays in hand as they waited patiently to grab some food.
Meanwhile from across the room, Lucas' friends Zay, Farkle and Maya were happily enjoying their meals, engaged in random conversations and occasionally breaking into laughter. Zay briefly looked up, a smirk tugging at the corners of his lips when he saw Lucas say something to the brunette causing her to give him a playful shove. "Well, would you look at that." He muttered, nudging on Farkle's shoulder as Maya too looked in their direction.
"Who the hell is she?" A feminine voice sounded as the pretty light brown haired female sat down at their table beside Maya, causing the others to exchange bewildered looks. "And what is Lucas doing with her?" A nauseating wave of jealousy arose in her throat and she had to fight the cruel feeling from taking over. With her hair pulled back in a ponytail, the others had a clear view of the different expressions darting across her features.
"Ah, Missy Bradford. What an unpleasant surprise." Maya glared irritably.
"Well hello there, beautiful." Zay turned to quirk up one eyebrow at her flirtatiously. "How you doing?"
"Is that girl serious?" Missy scoffed, ignoring the others as her attention remained elsewhere but them. "Who the hell does she think she is attending a rich school and wearing shoes that are obviously from Macy's?"
Maya's eyes widened, her pink-tinted lips parting in disgust. "Oh for fuck sake, no one cares!"
"Language, Ms. Hart." The Dean warned as he casually walked by their table.
"Sorry, Mr. Matthews." She forced a smile before turning back to Missy who was rolling her eyes dramatically.
"Of course you don't care." She continued, picking at her perfectly manicured nails. "You are Miss Maya Hart. You may not be the richest, but you are indeed the most popular girl in school. You could be wearing rags for all I care, and yet everyone here would still admire and worship you. Shock."
Maya's jaw clenched as she fought the urge to scream at her.
"I happen to like her shoes." Zay added after a moment of tensed silence. "It certainly emphasizes her long, amazing legs." Farkle looked down at his food and chuckled. "And besides, Lucas doesn't seem to mind at all considering he is over there with her and not here with you." He pointed out suggestively, hitting a nerve in Missy as she shot him a look.
By the time Lucas and Riley moved along the lunch line and paid for their meals, they headed towards the nearest empty table. It wasn't until Lucas briefly glanced up where he was a mere inch away from bumping into Thor. Luckily, he stopped before they rammed against each other as Thor glared at him and simply walked away.
"What was that all about?" Riley asked worriedly, stirring Lucas from his thoughts as she sat down across from him. When he didn't respond, she looked him straight in the eye. "I saw you two in the halls. Does it have anything to do with what happened yesterday?"
He nodded, hesitating slightly. She took in the uneasy expression on his face and smiled. "You don't have to tell me, Lucas. I just want you to know that if you need someone to talk to, I'm here." She reassured him when he still seemed reluctant. "And I'm a great listener."
With a steadying breath, Lucas focused on controlling his own emotions as he clasped his hands together in front of him. Her words, uttered with such assurance, warmth and sincerity had his control wavering. There was something about Riley, something that just gave off a different vibe than the other girls in school. Maybe it was her smile, shining bright and effervescent. She was cool, less desperate for attention, a little tomboyish in spite of how pretty and obviously feminine she was naturally.
"It wasn't always like this between Thor and me." He began, a sad tone entering his voice as he spoke. "We were pretty close once."
Riley frowned. "What happened?"
Lucas shifted in his seat nervously, feeling once more the trepidation he always felt when revealing parts of his life. "My Mom, she umm…she had an affair with his father a few years ago. It tore both his parents apart, and my parents…" he paused briefly and sighed, meeting her worried gaze, "well, let's just say it's a big mess."
She blinked twice and saw how guilty and ashamed he looked, feeling immense sympathy for him. She wouldn't know what to do if her family were put in the same, crazy situation. "It's not your fault, Lucas."
He scoffed a bitter laugh. "Yea, you should tell Thor that. He's taking it out on me as if what happened was all my fault."
"Or maybe he has no one else to turn to, and this is his way of crying out for help." Riley thought carefully as she raised her brow at him.
"Why wouldn't he just tell me?"
Riley gave a little snort as she popped a French fry into her mouth. "If you haven't noticed, males naturally have big egos. So of course he wouldn't say anything. I mean, would you?"
Lucas chuckled, sheepishly nodding his head in reply. "Good point."
The rest of lunch was spent in comfortable silence with Lucas eating and occasionally glancing at Riley, which was caught on when she looked back and smiled at him. She kept to herself most of the time, reading her book while munching on fries and sipping on ginger ale.
It was a few minutes before they were startled by a voice.
"Hello, Lucas."
He immediately glanced up and forced a smile that looked more like a grimace. "Oh hey, Missy." He replied as he trained his eyes back on his tray, bracing himself for what's to come.
"Who's your friend?" She asked, eyeing the brunette suspiciously and then at Lucas who was feeling slightly nervous when Missy glanced her way, squinting and sizing her up.
"Hi, I'm Riley." She grinned, standing up from her seat and extending her hand in greeting. Lucas could feel his own smile brightening at seeing her so giddy. "I'm new here."
"Missy." She said, narrowing her eyes in scrutiny as she reluctantly shook her hand.
"It's nice to meet you."
Missy raised her brow, clearly taken aback by her quirkiness. After a moment, Missy glared at her and forced a smile. "Yea, okay. Anyway, Lucas." She turned back to him, her ponytail whipping around her neck. "My parents are vacationing in the Hamptons for the weekend. I have the penthouse to myself and I'll be throwing a party Friday night. You should come."
He pursed his lips and sighed heavily, running his hand through his hair. "I'm sorry, Missy. But in case you haven't heard, I'm on thin ice and the last thing I need is a party that could get me in all sorts of trouble."
"Oh come on." She whined, not taking no for an answer. "It's nothing major, Lucas just a few friends. Besides, Zay, Farkle and Maya will be there." She explained, fluttering her eyelashes. When he didn't say anything, she glanced over at the brunette whose head was down and focused on a book. Missy bit her bottom lip, thinking for a moment before she spoke again with an exasperated sigh. "You can come too, Riley."
Lucas raised an eyebrow at Missy, his lips parting slightly in disbelief.
"What?" Riley's gaze lit up, matching the surprised look on Lucas' face. "Really?" She smiled with a subtle hint of excitement in her voice.
"Sure. Whatever." Missy gave a light-hearted shrug. "You can even bring a friend."
Riley looked directly at Lucas with uncertainty filled in her brown eyes. It took her a long second to finally respond. "Um, yea. Okay."
"Great! Lucas can give you the address. I'll see you there." Missy then turned back to him. "I hope you change your mind, handsome." She winked before leaving their table as he sat there staring after her. Riley bit her bottom lip, suppressing a smirk.
"So…are there girls in the school that don't like you?" She teased after a moment of silence. "Because she obviously likes you."
He sighed and looked back at Riley, allowing her to see the concerned expression on his face. "You should be careful with Missy."
"What? Why?"
"She can be manipulative. I've known her for years. She has a history of scheming and creating scandal."
Riley drew her head back and frowned. "And you think her inviting me is another one of her schemes?"
"I certainly hope not."
She pursed her lips in thought as she stared at him. "Well, she seems nice. And I like to believe that there is good in everyone. So I'm going to take my chances and attend the party."
Lucas's emerald-green eyes skimmed her face in admiration. "Alright then." He said after a brief pause, knowing he wouldn't change her mind. "I guess I'll see you there."
"You're going?" She gave him an inquiring look. He returned her wondering gaze and smiled.
"Someone has to look after you."
"You don't have to."
"I know, but I want to."
She furrowed her brows slightly. "Why?"
He shrugged. "I don't know. I just feel like I'm not supposed to let anything bad happen to you."
Her gaze softened and brightened a little as a slow flush came rushing to her cheeks. "Thank you, Lucas. But I am capable of taking care of myself."
"And I'm sure you are." He smirked, sneakily grabbing her phone from the table beside him to dial in his number before she could protest. The bell suddenly rang, indicating lunch was over as he quickly saved Riley's number and texted the address. "But I'm still going to that party." He said, handing her back the phone before grabbing his lunch tray and getting up from his seat. "I'll see you there, Riley."
A few days later…
"I can't believe I let you talk me into this."
"Smackle, you know you let me talk you into everything." Riley grinned, glancing at her dark brown haired female friend from behind the closest door.
"Tell me again why you are dragging me into this party and not Evan?" Smackle retorted as she examined herself in the body-length mirror wearing a long sleeve blue dress with a pair of beige high-heeled booties.
"Well, I told my parents I will be sleeping over at your place for the night, so there's that. And knowing how Evan feels about Upper East Siders, he'd try to talk me out of it."
"Why are you even going? You dislike the Upper East Siders as much as he does."
"Some of them are actually really nice." Riley explained as she emerges from behind the closet door, fully clad in a knee high black dress with a tortoise shell buckle across her petite waist and a pair of black pumps. "And besides, this is my chance to get acquainted with everyone." Riley does a quick twirl as Smackle beams brightly at her. "What do you think?"
"You look so chic, darling." She smiled, chuckling softly as they spent the next ten minutes adding the finishing touches to their ensemble before sneaking out the bedroom window to catch a cab.
They've been at the party for half an hour and Riley had already lost Smackle. What she thought was going to be a small gathering turned out to be a big party with dozens of people filling up the entire floor of the penthouse while loud music played in the background. Riley separated from Smackle as soon as the first guy who she recognized from one of her classes pulled her to the side and asked her to dance. Noticing the stench of alcohol and smoke in his breath, she politely declined and managed to get away, only to bump into several more people. After apologizing profusely, Riley found herself leaning against the wall near the bar, beginning to feel ridiculously out of place. She sighed, wishing she had stayed at home instead.
"Not your type of scene, is it?" Stated a familiar voice to Riley's left, and she nearly jumped three feet in the air in response. Her head snapped towards the sound, eyes landing on his emerald gaze. He was wearing black slacks with a checkered blue and white short sleeve dress shirt and tie, standing out in comparison to her more casual look. She stiffened slightly, trying to ignore the growing heat on her face.
"Oh, um, no." She muttered, looking down self-consciously as she tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "I just, well…I've never been to a party like this one before."
"Yeah, I figured." He smirked, looking her over a bit while she isn't facing him. "You look nice by the way."
She glanced up at him and smiled. "Thanks, Lucas. So do you." Riley turned her head back to the party, eyes scanning the crowd once more, not seeing a trace of Smackle anywhere.
"Looking for someone?" He asked.
"Yea, my friend. She's about this tall, dark hair with glasses and wearing a blue dress. I came here with her and she disappeared on me."
"Is her name Isadora by any chance?"
Riley's eyes snapped back to his. "Yes! She also goes by Smackle. Have you seen her? Where is she?"
"She's outside in the patio with a few of my friends. I can take you to her." He smiled before holding out his arm towards her. Riley stared at it in confusion for a moment before it dawned on her that he's offering it to her and she takes it without question. She allowed him to lead her through the crowd, surprised at the wide break they were being offered by the other guests as all eyes were on them. She'd had to practically fight her way through to get to the bar earlier.
They walked in silence for a few minutes until they reached the back of the penthouse and exited through the double doors that led to the patio. Riley was thankful for the cooler evening air the second she stepped out. The growing heat inside the building wasn't making her feel any more comfortable.
Once outside, she briefly looked up at Lucas out of the corner of her eye, but he was staring straight ahead. Turning her gaze back ahead of them as well, her eyes widen in relief at the sight of Smackle, who was busy talking with another guy, seemingly enjoying his company. Riley noticed she was smiling a lot, and in a better mood than she was earlier. Riley cleared her throat loudly before taking a few steps towards her, causing them and two other people to look her way.
"Riley!" Smackle excused herself from her tall male companion as she came stumbling towards her. Riley felt Lucas leave her side as he went to join the others on the opposite end of the patio. "Where have you been? I've been looking for you."
"And I've been looking for you. Are you okay?"
"Yea." She grinned. "I'm great. I'm more than great."
Riley took a step forward and glared at her. "Have you been drinking?" She asked, concern etched in her features. The alcohol on her breath was obvious and extremely pungent.
"Maybe." Smackle slurred and chuckled.
"How much did you drink?"
She shrugged. "A glass or two perhaps? I don't know, Riles. These fancy servers they have walking around kept offering me drinks." Riley sighed heavily. There was a brief pause as Smackle gave her a quirky little smile and chuckled. "You know, if I knew there were this many hot guys in your school, I would have begged my parents to make me transfer." Smackle whispered playfully. "I mean, it's no wonder Evan is jealous of Lucas."
"Smackle!" Riley hissed.
"What? He's such a dreamboat. And the other tall one next to him. His name is Farkle and he is very sweet. He kept an eye on me and made sure I stopped drinking." Riley smiled, glancing ahead of her where Lucas joined him and two other people, one short female with gorgeous blonde hair and another male with dark brown skin. "But anyway, we've been talking for half an hour and he is giftedly brilliant as I am. I mean, who would of thought I would come across someone with a perfect jawline who is also a threat to my superior intelligence. But don't tell anyone I said that, especially him."
Riley giggled for a moment and then frowned. "Well, I'm glad you had your fun, Smackle. But we're going home while you are still somewhat coherent."
She pouted, but said nothing to protest.
"Is everything alright?" Lucas asked as he approached them with three of his other friends standing at a respectable distance.
"Yea, everything is okay. But we are going to take off." Riley said, motioning to Smackle who was suddenly leaning on her shoulder and yawning. She then turned to Farkle and flashed him a smile. "Thank you for looking out for my friend."
"You're welcome."
"I'm Riley by the way."
"I know. I'm Farkle." He replied as he shook her hand. "Lucas talks about you all the time."
Lucas paled for a moment, breaking in an uneasy chuckle. "Okay!" He responded, waving him off and lightly elbowing Farkle as he watched the small smile Maya and Zay shared. "Riley, this is Zay and Maya. Guys, this is Riley."
"Hey."
"Sup?"
"Hi…" Riley greeted, smiling shyly at them.
"So do you need a ride back home?" Lucas asked. "I can have my driver take you guys."
"No, it's okay. We are taking a cab. We'll be fine."
He frowned, giving off a look of genuine concern and slight disappointment. "At least let me walk you out until your ride gets here?"
She looked at him and smiled. "Sure. I'd like that."
"We'll head out too." Maya said as she summoned her things nearby. "This party is a bore."
The others agreed as they began making their way back inside the penthouse where the music was blaring loudly and people were dancing. It seemed as if there were more people in the building than there were just twenty minutes ago as the smell of alcoholic beverages and smoke polluted the air, clouding their surroundings. They were about to exit when a voice stopped them in their tracks.
"Lucas! Where are you going?!"
Maya rolled her eyes, immediately recognizing whom the voice belonged to before they all turned around. Riley glanced at Lucas from the corner of her eye as a heavy sigh escaped his lips. "Missy."
She closed the distance between them, placing herself in front of him. Her hair was loosely down, her eyes red and glazed over, and her breath smelled like alcohol. "Come dance with me."
He grabbed her arms before she could wrap them around his neck. "You're drunk."
"And you're not drunk enough." She slurred as he deliberately took a step back before she could put her hands on him again. Missy flinched, her eyes glossing with a faraway haze as the hurt began to show in her eyes.
"Look after her, Chai." Lucas said, a sudden annoyance filling him as he shifted his gaze over to one of Missy's friends standing nearby. The blue-eyed, dirty blonde female nodded mutely. She then craned her neck, straining to get a better look at the brunette as Lucas and the others turned around and left.
"So is that the girl?" She asked curiously.
Missy folded her arms across her chest and heaved a sigh. "Yup."
"She's cute."
Rolling her eyes, Missy replied sharply. "She's in my way." She could feel the buzz starting to wear off, as she was able to think a bit clearer again. A pang of nausea hit her in the stomach and she groaned.
"So what are you gonna do about it?" Chai questioned, a mischievous smirk playing across her features as Missy paused at the comment and narrowed her eyes.
"I'm going to take her down."
The ride home was quiet as Lucas just stared out the window, exhausted. He sighed and shifted around in the back of the car until his tired body was in a comfortable position.
"Are you alright, Friar?" Asked his driver, peering at him through the rearview mirror.
Lucas stared at the back of his head for a second before he took a long, deep breath and let it out slowly through his mouth. "It's nothing."
By the time the driver pulled up by the sidewalk in front of the penthouse apartment building on East 66th Street, Lucas was out of the car and rushing to get inside and onto his bed. Instead of taking the slow service elevator to his apartment on the 6th floor, he quickly ran up the grand staircase. While passing through the hallway, he could hear muffled voices drifting in from behind the door to his apartment. He frowned before he slowly opened the door and stepped inside.
"Lucas." He saw his mother immediately get up from the living room couch, a worry expression worn upon her. His gaze shifted over to her male companion standing beside her; a man his height, but with graying hair and deeper lines around his eyes. He was thin, but with slightly wider shoulders. Green eyes stared at him from a hardened face as Lucas swallowed nervously.
"Dad?"
And then the hardened expression melted away and the eyes softened, glimmering a bit as extra moisture collected on them.
"Hello, Son." He smiled. "I'm home."

Prologue Ch 1
It had been a month since the girl's night so the girls just assumed Riley decided not to go and the storm had passed since Riley was in a much better place now. Well people can dream right. Little did they know Riley used the month to secretly prepare for her move. She got a nice condo and even had Farkle fooled in the office that her personal assistant would be overseeing the new branch.
Riley was going to break the news to her parents and friends that she was indeed leaving the country again. She decided to invite the group of friends along with Shawn and Katy Hunter to avoid the famous Cory Matthews freak out. She had invited Zay who was in town in preparations to move back to New York. He hadn't told anyone yet not even Lucas but he did tell Riley because who else do you tell your dreams to. So both took this as an opportunity to break the news to their family and friends at a dinner in a public place.
At 7:30pm they were all seated at a new really fancy restaurant. Farkle, Isadora, Maya, Josh, Cory, Topanga, Shawn, Katy, Darby, Yogi, Vanessa, Zay's parents, Riley and Zay are all there having an amazing dinner. Zay kept giving Riley glances the whole time hoping she would fess up. Topanga had her reservations about the reason for this dinner. She kept her suspicions to herself to spare her husband's feelings.
After much light hearted conversations over dinner, Riley and Zay finally exchange glances knowing that everyone was almost done with dinner so it was now or never. Zay decided to go first to buy Riley some time to gather her thoughts, plus his news was on a much brighter note. He clinked his glass with his fork to get everyone's attention.
"So I have a little announcement to make" all eyes shot at him "what do you guys think of this restaurant"
"For a new place the food awesome" Cory said
"Thanks Mr. Matthews I'm glad you enjoyed it I guess my skills are still pretty tight in the kitchen" everyone looked really surprised
"You made this? How is that even possible?" Farkle asked with a really confused look on his face
"Don't act all surprised genius, Yea that's right I know stuff" Farkle threw his hands in the air in surrender making everyone laugh "well this is sort of a celebratory dinner among other things" he glanced at Riley
"As of tonight at exactly 12 am to be exact it's my restaurant" Zay said with a huge smile
Vanessa's eyes were about to pop out of its socket "babe, what does that mean"
"it means as of tonight I officially live in New York again, you gonna be okay with that"
"Oh honey I'm more than okay with that, it's amazing actually" she kissed him and hugged him. There were lots of cheering and Riley could not stop her sweaty palms because she knew in a few minutes she was going to spoil this joy on everyone's face
Zay hugged both his parents "I'm so proud of you son really I am" Zay's dad said "you are doing something you love and doing so well at it. I couldn't ask for anything more out of the world" Zay's mum did a double take around the table and noticed someone was missing and said "Baby boy where is Lucas and why isn't he here for this"
"Umm I sorta haven't told him yet. It just never came up" Zay said with the look of guilt washed all over him. The truth was that he tried telling Lucas on multiple occasions since he got the idea to buy a restaurant in New York, but he never wanted to have to leave his best friend alone. Since the rucas breakup, even if Lucas would never admit it, he had converted Zay into his new Riley. Not in the romantic aspects although there were some drunk cuddling moments back in their college years on Lucas' end but he was way too hammered to remember, on some of these cuddle moments Lucas would call out Riley's name and tell her/Zay to 'stay put because she wasn't going anywhere' or he would say 'run all you want I'm coming with you' and Zay vowed to take those moments with him to his grave. Lucas would call and text him about the most random things and lean on him when his anger was getting the better of him just as he used to with Riley and Zay gladly took the role for Lucas' sake plus both boys have grown much closer since then. So telling Lucas about his move to New York has proven to be one of the hardest things he had ever had to do in his entire adult life.
Zay's mum looked seriously shocked "baby you shave the man's beard but somehow you moving back to New York never came up" everyone started snickering
"Ma!"
"Hell I'd even seen y'all cuddle before" his dad added to make his wife's point
"Dad! It was one time" he looked around the table "IT WAS ONE TIME!"
Maya winked at him "oookay Zay we totally believe you" and then she started making kissy faces at him making everyone laugh
This whole time Riley was going crazy with thoughts because this was the first personal thing she had learned about the Texas doctor in fourteen years oh my God Luke, she thought, I use to shave his beard, No! Riley get it together her thoughts were interrupted when say Zay spoke up
"but seriously y'all, I wanna be the one to tell him so nobody mentions this him and by nobody I mean you Darbs"
"Hey!" Darby whined folding her hands
Smackle's brain got the better of her "Zay you said 'among other things', do you have more revelations for us tonight". Riley nearly choked on her desert and started coughing. Topanga quickly put her hand on Riley's back "Honey are you okay have some water" Riley takes the water and she can just feel Zay glaring at her.
It was clear to him that Riley was trying to chicken out so he took this moment to give her a push "actually Riley told me a really good Riley story, care to share?" Zay said with raised eyebrows to Riley
"Yes a-actually Zay is right I do have something to say I don't think everyone would consider it a good riley story but either way you all have to know" she paused to take another sip of water. At this point most members of the dinner table already knew were the conversation was going.
Cory clearly in denial and with a playful chuckle he spoke up "if I didn't know any better I'd say you brought us all out to dinner to tell us you were moving again" Riley starts downing all drinks in sight. "Nooo! No? No! Riley I'm wrong right, tell me I'm wrong"
"Dad calm down we are in a public"
"Ha! Is that why you told me here? ya thought I won't make a scene cause trust me I'll make a scene. Oh a scene to the likes you have never seen" Cory spat waving his pointer finger in sass. The younger members of the table were part amazed at Cory's outburst and part sad that Riley was leaving.
"Uncle Shawn help please"
"I got ya kiddo" Shawn took Cory's hand "Cory I'm gonna need you to calm down I'm sure Riley has a really good reason for moving right Riley?"
"Yes Uncle Shawn, Daddy I need to monitor the operations in Vancouver. It's a new office with new employees I just want to ensure things take off without a hitch" Cory turned to Farkle and raised his index finger at him "You! You did this. You were supposed to make sure things like these 'little business trips' never happened". Again Farkle's hands went up in surrender making everyone laugh. "Mr. Matthews this wasn't the plan at all. Up until a few seconds ago I was under the impression that Riley's assistant Shelby would be going to Vancouver" then it clicked to him Riley would never let an assistant take on such an important role. How could he not see this.
"Riles so you've being lying to me about Shelby this whole time"
"Farkle I never meant to lie to you. I knew you would have sent someone in my place if I had told you the truth"
"hell yea I would, Riley you don't have to do this. Your friends, family" he gestured to everyone on the table "we're all here. We want you here please"
Topanga thought for a second "Riles, pumpkin you are the CFO, chief FINANCIAL officer not an operations manager, that's why the company has Mr. Parks you know the actual chief operating officer"
Riley already thought her escape plan through so she had her story straight "Mr. Parks just had a baby and I wasn't going to let him leave his family like that. You guys I'm doing this and I would really love your support"
This whole time Maya had held her tongue and tears because she honestly thought Riley would stay this time "Riley please don't do this. Please if this is about Lucas coming to into the city…" Riley cut her short
"Maya this isn't about him! I'm doing this for me can't you see that?
"No I can't. He comes into town right after you leave and then you come back just right after he's gone. it's a vicious circle"
"Maya my mind is made up on this, everything is set I leave in two days. I just need to take a break and to get away for a while"
"From what? your friends and family who love you? You need a break from us?" Maya spat
"I can't even do this with you right now" with that Riley stood up and left the restaurant. Maya got up and ran after her. "Well that escalated quickly. Dinners on me y'all" Zay said.
GMWGMWGMWGMWGMWGMWGMW
"Riles wait up, Riley ring power!" Riley stood still "Riley talk to me, like real talk no BS. Why are you leaving" Maya walked up behind her and took her hand "Riles?"
"I don't know what it is myself." She said with a shaky voice "I just know I need to get away for a while; I feel like I need some space to breathe" they both sat on a bench on the curb and gazed into space "three years Maya three years I was with Charlie and what did that get me, nothing. I honestly thought my life was finally moving in some kind of direction you know; I wasn't just blowing in the wind anymore. I know you don't believe me when I say it but I did love Charlie, maybe he wasn't my 'the one'" she did air quotes and smiled "but he was something and now…"
"You feel like you have nothing" Maya said slowly while looking up at her best friend with a tears threatening to escape "Riley you have us; me, Farkle, Isadora, Darbs heck even Zay's gonna be here now; we are always going to be here for you; you have something here in New York"
"I get that I really do and I love you guys so much but it's just when I come over to your homes and I see these beautiful kids running around and I think to myself 'I want this' and then another thought comes to mind and…" she starts sobbing when a particular memory of her past comes to her mind. Maya hugs her and they both cry for a few minutes before Farkle shows up and sits beside Riley.
"Hey" Riley looks up at him and rests her head on his shoulder
"why didn't I snag you up when I had the chance" they all chuckled.
"That could be arranged" Farkle said with raised brows. She smiled and kissed his cheek and then turned to kiss Maya's forehead while hugging both "I love you two so much and I'm really going to miss you"
"I see Maya couldn't talk you out of it?"
"No she couldn't, I'm sorry for lying to you about Shelby please don't be mad at her. It was all my fault"
"Don't worry about it, so how long will you be gone this time"
"I don't know, maybe till when the guys over there learn the ropes and wouldn't need me anymore so a couple months give or take"
"Well either way I know you would do amazing in Vancouver. I hate to say it but there's no one else I would have trusted to go"
Maya perked up with wide eyes "Farkle! We are trying to get her to stay. Don't put ideas in her head" Both Riley and Farkle laughed and Riley wiped her face of what tears were left "Aww Maya everything's gonna be okay I promise. I just need this time for me ok? I'll be fine"
"I know honey but what if you meet some young version of Ryan Reynolds and decide you want to stay there and become Canadian hmm? What do I do then; cause you already know I'm gonna have to drag Josh and Melvin up there because I have to be with you and I'm a New Yorker; always have been; I can't be Canadian Riley; common you guys its Canada we're talking of! You're not gonna make me move to Canada now are you" Maya whined
"Oh peaches I would never do that to either one of us. I would miss the Knicks too much" the three started laughing "if I do meet someone there he's going to have to come back with me or no dice" Riley said with squinted eyes
"promise?"
"With all my heart peaches. We are growing old together that's one thing I know for sure. Now come on" she stood up pulling both her childhood friends up "you both have adorable munchkins who won't tuck themselves to bed"
With that all three got cabs and went home.
A/N
I feel like need I to say this obviously "I DO NOT OWN GIRL MEETS WORLD". But I hope you caught the BMW reference
Oh and I've lived in Canada on my own for the past 3 years so no offense to all my Canadian readers because I do love it here, the people are amazing. But I was watching how I met your mother when writing this chapter and just got in a Barney Stinson state of mind lol
So there is going to be a time jump in the next chapter to when Riley comes back fingers crossed she doesn't come home with anyone. And would she finally see our Texas vet? Who knows find out next time ;-)
Thanks for reading. I'll love to hear what you think. Please follow and favorite

Why Are You Mad? •Riarkle
266. “It’s a real shame nobody asked for your opinion.”-Riarkle
(Mention of Lucaya)
You thought things were fine, you both got over a stupid drunk kiss which should’ve not even happened at the first place. But you thought things were fine, that’s what she said!

Sure, you wanted more! You have been in love with Riley since the 1st grade of course that kiss meant the world to you.You just couldn’t say that to her!

“So umm about last night…”

You cought her attention from the book she was reading. She turned at you, eyes full of expectation. And she had that beautiful, understanding smile on her face that made you forget about everything you were planning to say.

“It’s for the best if we just forget it right?”

She still kept that smile so you thought you were doing good, even though nothing about this conversation felt right.

“Oh,um sure.It was unexpected and not logical at all anyways…”

“Yeah not logical at all”

“I don’t even know why we did that.We should’ve not drunk that much!”

“Totally it was all on the alcohol!”

There was an awkward silence now.She turned back to her book to avoid that. You propably should leave. But you wanted to make sure.Make sure everything will be fine.Make sure she doesn’t have anything else to say!

“Riles…”

She closed her eyes like she couldn’t stand to hear your voice anymore. She lookes pissed you thought…But she was just smiling a minute before!

“What now Farkle?”

“Things will be fine right? It won’t be awkward at all?”

She smiled again, even though it looks a bit fake.
“Of course,it’s fine.We’re fine.”
It has been a week!Ever since you had that talk, NOTHING WAS FINE!

She would roll her eyes everytime you say something, would make an excuse to leave everytime you come to Topanga’s and you’re not sure if you have ever seen Riley that mean to anybody in your life! She would always cut of your sentences and makes some rude comebacks to every word that comes out of your mouth!

You’re trying so hard to understand just like the others. The group felt the tenssion between you and now they’re uncomfortable being around!
You regret kissing her because now she can’t even look you in the eye and not pleased by your existence (ok maybe you’re overreacting a bit) but you also don’t regret because how could you?How could you regret kissing Riley Matthews? Drunk or not,she was kissing you back and it was more than perfect.
As usual the group met at Topanga’s to chat up.You are desperatly trying to make eye contact with Riley and she propably knows that.So she doesn’t even turn her head to your side.

“So who are you gonna be partners with for the science project?” asks Smackle.

That catches your attention. There’s a new science project coming up.And you suddenly feel a little hope again. This is the chance to make things okay again between you and Riley. You’re aware that she is distant to you these days but there’s no way she is not going to pair up with you.Because it’s Farkle and Riley.Partners.
“Well well I would say Riles but since she has someone else on her mind…” Maya sticks out her tongue at Riley as you watch smiling “I think I’m gonna go with Huckleberry, cool?”

You see Lucas getting too excited as he winks at Maya “Of course”

“What you up to Riles?” Zay asks confused.

“Um so you know Nathan…We’ve been hanging out for a little while now and he’s good at science so I figured why not?”

It’s like someone poured a boiling water on you.All the feelings mix together inside you as your smile disappears.Anger, dissapointment, jealousy, jealousy, jealousy….
You try to stay calm as you realise for the first time that day Riley looking at you.But you don’t have the energy to look back at her.Everyone lets out a wow when all you want to do is yell and yell. You just got a taste of what it’s like to kiss Riley and now some guy is coming to take her away from you!
“You really think he is the best option out there Matthews?”

You try not to sound too harsh, but failing. For the first time that day your eyes meet as everyone stays still, shocked and quiet.

“Cause I know he is not!”

“It’s a real shame nobody asked for your opinion Farkle.”

You hear everyone gasp. And that’s it!

“Fuck Riley!”

You reach to Riley’s hand, and take her out from Topanga’s quickly.
“Why are you mad Farkle?” She asks and you almost laugh with anger.Almost.

“No Riley why are you mad?”

“Why are you doing this to me?Hurting me?Keep taking me to hell and bringing back?”

She turns away her head and you grab her by the chin gently to look her in the eyes.

“I don’t want you with Nathan,I-”

“You don’t know what you want! One day you kiss me,taking me to places that I didn’t even know existed and the next day I, stupid me expect you to come at me with hugs and kisses, calling me your girlfriend.I fucking thought that kiss was the beginning of something and for you apparently it was just a disaster that should be forgotten!”

“What the hell Riley?”

She pushes you away angrily.

“Don’t expect me to be okay all right?I’m pissed Farkle.I,I thought you loved me since the first grade.I thought something could happen. And when it finally did you crushed it!”

“Can you please listen to me too? I’m in-”

“Oh please you think I will listen?”

“Well then I’m gonna have to kiss you again. Is that the only way I can make you quiet?”

At this point you’re the one talking in a calm voice and Riley is just yelling. You can understand why.And that kissing joke didn’t help too.You wanna cry so bad and laught at the same time because it is all your fault! “Yeah sure Farkle go ahead.Kiss me and then maybe we can forget about that one too!”

Your faces are so close that you don’t even think as you pull her to yourself.Wrapping your arms to her waist crashing your lips. You can tell she was not expecting that and when she realises what’s going on she tries to back away. You kiss her more passionately this time. She gives up and kisses you back.Your lips move in sync like you did this before a million times.
You pull her a little more closer like that’s possible and her hands are already on your hair, messing it.
When you finally back away for air,she rests her head on your chest, eyes closed.
You kiss her hair ,hugging her more tightly.
“Again, that was unexpected and not logical.”

You laugh at her words. She lifts her head and looks at you, smiling.

“It’s you and me of course it was expected and logical.”

“I love you Farkle.”

“And I love you.”

2 DATE|CANON VERSE|RUCAS WEEK
Day 1. Second date. Hi all. Day one of rucas fanfiction week and I have vowed to myself that I will make very one shot 3000+ words. This is incredibly hard for me so ahhhhh!!!! Wish me luck. DAY ONE - CANON VERSE - SECOND DATE. Riley sat down in front of her vanity and brushed her long brown hair. She turned on her phone and clicked her music app, ED Sheeran blasted through her room and she sighed. She looked down at her makeup and moved her stuff around trying to figure out what she wanted to put on. She grabbed her too faced palette and decided to not put on anything too heavy. She knew Lucas liked her for who she was and that she shouldn't do anything too drastic. She grabbed an eyeshadow brush and started putting a transition in her crease. She put a glittery shade on her inner lid and a darker shade On her outer corner. She picked up her liquid eyeliner and went to start her cat eye. She made the movement just above where she wanted it and just as she touched the liner to her eye she heard a knock, she flinched backwards scared and her hand moved and the liner went into her eye. She groaned in pain and she heard laughter come from the window. Riley grabbed a q-tip and hair brush, using the q-tip to clean up the liner and Riley threw the hair brush at a laughing Maya. 'Ow.' Maya screeched grabbing the other stool and sitting next to Riley. 'Well you ruined my cat eye.' Riley groaned reapplying her eyeshadow. 'Well Lucas doesn't like over the top makeup anyway. So I did ya a favour.' She joked standing up and prancing over to the closet. She stammered through all of Riley's clothes and tried to throw away all of the colourful things. Realising that Riley was super colourful and that she never wanted her to change she picked out her favourite colourful items. 'Riley where exactly are you going again.' Maya called out to Riley who was finishing up her contour. 'Movies. It's a cuddle bunnies special I think.' She yelled back her smile growing at the idea. Riley was so smitten about the idea of what they were doing, it was so Riley and Lucas. It was just them and that made her happy. Riley couldn't dismiss the knotting in her stomach though. She was incredibly nervous that she would stuff up or scare Lucas off. 'I'm done. I found the perfect outfit.' Maya sang as she walked back out of Riley's closet. She set out the purple top and black jeans and a denim jacket on the bed and smoothed it out for Riley to wear. 'So I'm assuming you have underwear but the bra you have on won't do.' Maya spoke to herself darting back into her closet to Riley's bra collection. She looked over all them and decided that Riley needed something more, uplifting. Maya darted back over to her backpack and picked up a push up bra. 'This.' Maya spoke showing Riley. Riley turned away from her makeup and turned the bra Over showing Maya the endless amount of push up. 'Maya no.' She seethed rolling her eyes. 'Maya yes. Now go put your stuff on. I want to take a pic for my snap story.' Maya rushed bundling the clothes up and throwing them at Riley as she pushed her into the bathroom. Riley rushed to get changed and looked at her outfit in the mirror, she liked the how it wasn't over the top but it was nicer than normal. It was pretty but it wasn't try hard, and no matter how much she hated it, the push up bra looked good. Riley quickly brushed her teeth and made sure her hair was still looking nice. She stepped out of her bathroom and was hit by the flash of something. She death stares Maya but Maya just smiled and added the snap to her story. 'Ok so now shoes. Converse or boots.' Maya spoke thinking out loud. Before Riley could answer they heard another knock at the door. They darted their eyes over to the door and saw smackle walk in. 'Converse now Riley out.' Smackle demanded pushing Riley out the door. Riley stumbled into the living room and saw Lucas facing her father. He seemed to be quite calm but Riley knew better. 'Dad let him go.' Riley called walking over to Lucas as she tried to put her converse on. Lucas spun around and took one look at Riley and instantly felt weak in the knees. He tried to choke his words out but his mouth felt dry looking at the girl in front of him. Riley felt the same way as she looked at his tan slacks and his maroon button up. She smiled a little and went over to hold his hand. He returned her smile and rubbed his hand on his pants before grabbing her hand. 'Sir I'll have her home by 9:45.' He formerly spoke and mr Matthews grunted and walked away. 'So you ready.' Lucas croaked and Riley rubbed her thumb over His hand. 'As I'll ever be.' She soothed and they walked out the door. Riley tried not to move weirdly and focused on walking as stiff as normal. Lucas looked over to Riley and saw her moving a bit weirdly and he realised what was happening. He sighed and squeezed her hand slightly, Riley looked up at him and saw his concerned face. 'Riley. Why are you walking like that.' He questioned and Riley's gaze stiffened. She looked down at her feet and still tried to walk normally. 'Umm. I. Umm.' She stammered but she couldn't get the words out the way she wanted. 'Riley I like you for you. I like klutzy Riley, I like every Riley there is. You don't need to act different for me.' He ranted and Riley felt tears well up in his eyes at his sincere words. 'Thanks. I just- you know- get worried.' She spoke quietly and Lucas removed his hand from hers and moved his arm around her shoulder. They sat down on the subway and hesitantly Riley put her head on his chest. 'Yeah I know. I understand you have anxiety thing. I remember when you kinda told us when we put the labels on out forehead.' He sighed and Riley snuggled into him. 'Thankyou for understanding. So how do you feel about Katy and Shawn getting married, oh and Maya and Josh finally sailing.' She asked and Lucas furrowed his brows. 'Sailing?' He laughed and Riley hit his chest lightly. 'Like the ship has sailed.' She spoke in a duh tone. Lucas looked down at her and laughed not understanding teenage girls at all. 'Well I'm happy for both of them. It's gonna be great.' He cheered and Riley burst into laughter at his tone. she noticed the weird looks she was getting from people on the subway but she couldn't Seem to restrain herself. They both left the subway at their stop and Lucas put his hand in hers again. They chatted about little things while they walked to the theatre and Lucas couldn't be happier. 'We're here.' Riley Beamed happily and bounced into the theatre. She ran over to the front desk and asked for two tickets but she saw Lucas step in front of her. 'I'm paying.' Lucas insisted and Riley rolled her eyes sneaking over to the condiments. She asked for two popcorns and two cokes and quickly payed before Lucas could insist. She scrambled her way back over to Lucas and gave him a popcorn. Lucas looked down at her and sighed before reaching for his wallet. Riley waved her hand In front of him and Lucas sighed once again. 'I know it's a very white feminist thing to do. But I have to pay, it's a me thing ok. We have to deal with it.' She ranted and skipped off towards their screening. Lucas jumped behind her trying to get some of her happiness into him, which was successful by skipping, it was the safest way to travel. The reached their area and they sat next to each other in the third row. Lucas positioned himself closer to Riley. 'So is this the point where I put my hand over your shoulder while I'm pretending to yawn.' Lucas jokes and Riley giggled, she had really hoped he wouldn't do such a cheesy move and was glad he thought it was funny. 'Yeah you can just do it without the yawn. It's only 7:30 I hope you aren't tired yet.' Riley joked back and felt a buzz on her butt. Seeing as it was only the ad she took out her phone and saw a text from Maya. "Have you guys made out yet." She read and Lucas peeked over her shoulder and almost spat out his drink. 'Lets trick her.' Lucas suggested and Riley looked over at him feigning interest. 'Well what shall we do.' She asked her eye brow raised. Lucas smirked a little at his idea. 'We send her a photo of us kissing. I mean we don't really have to kiss we will just have to put a hand over your mouth, how about to Jexica ?' He joked and Riley thought about it for a second before deciding it was a good idea. Riley nodded and picked up her phone and turned on the camera, Lucas faced her and Riley faced him. 'Ok 3,2,1.' Riley spoke and went to put her lips on his. They both realised a little too late that they both didn't know who was putting the hand up. Before they knew it there lips were touching and Riley had pressed the camera button. She meant to pull away but she was so intoxicated by the kiss that she couldn't pull away, she deepened the kiss slightly by opening her mouth and Lucas followed. He wasn't sure how far she wanted to go so he pulled away her forehead on his, Lucas smiled at her and kissed her lips lightly one more time. 'Again.' Riley whispered and Lucas was happy to comply, Riley had accidentally hit video on her phone and deleted the previous Picture. They made out intensely before they heard someone cough behind them. Abruptly they broke apart and saw that the movie was starting anyway. Riley quickly clicked sent on what she thought was the photo and focused her attention to the movie, Lucas cuddled Riley and she cuddled back into him. --------------------------- Riley and Lucas both stood up and walked out of the theatre. Riley quickly excused herself to go to the bathroom and Lucas happily sat down on the seat. Riley waited in line and went to be bathroom. Once she was done she washed her hands and quickly checked her phone. Immediately she saw 10 calls from Maya, 32 texts, and 30 calls from Zay. Confused she opened her texts and read through them, her eyes widened when she saw what they were about. She quickly scrambled outside and tackled Lucas before he could read his messages. Lucas sat upright once again and looked over at Riley who was fretting. 'What.' Lucas questioned to his girlfriend who was fretting again. 'I kinda accidentally sent Maya a video of us making out and I think Zay has seen it too and wants a great Riley and Lucas story.' Riley scrambled and Lucas' eyes widened but then he just laughed. 'Riley they know we are dating. It's natural for us to do these things. I mean from now on it probably should be private but who cares. Plus Zay is just bored.' Lucas soothed rubbing Riley's back, Riley was instantly relaxed and realised that she had done absolutely nothing wrong. 'Thanks for that.' Riley beamed and Lucas smiled standing up and taking her hand. 'Dinner?' He asked and Riley nodded. 'But somewhere other than Topanga's.' She begged and Lucas smiled and nodded. They walked two blocks in comfortable silence and decided to go into a pizza place. Once they were seated and Lucas had ordered them a pizza Riley decided to start quite conversation. 'How are you liking high school? I mean other than the rough start.' She questioned and Lucas rolled his eyes. 'Hey the start was my fault and I'm kinda liking it. It's a challenge but I like an actual challenge.' He responded and Riley nodded. 'Where do you want to go to college for your vet course. I've heard Texas a&m was really good.' Riley suggested and Lucas furrowed his brows. 'Wait you've been looking up colleges?' He asked her and she looked down in shame. 'Well you know how I told you about that whole sandwich drink and cake thing?' She asked and Lucas nodded. 'Well I was also thinking about future future. Like other than bunny farmer future. I just have a lot of free time.' She tried to save herself and earned a laugh from Lucas. 'Tell me about it.' Lucas asked dazed by Rileys eyes. 'Well we go to different colleges. You get into Texas a&m and I encourage you to go but you don't like what Texas did to you. So I go to Columbia and you go to nyu but then you transfer for your masters course. We get a place together and one year before you graduate I end up pregnant. It's a surprise and all but with me working anyway it turns out to be amazing. Half way through the pregnancy we find out there's two babies, my dad Almost dies of a heart attack but in the end they help us find a bigger apartment. You end up graduating with high marks and co-own a business, we give birth to two beautiful twins and live upstate, but we don't buy things in bulk. I haven't really thought too much about anything else though.' She ranted a bit embarrassed that she had probably just creeped Lucas out a lot. She Finally gained the courage to look up and saw Lucas' smiley face. 'What about names though, I've always like the ideas of Violet and-' 'Bailee.' Riley cut him off. 'Sorry I jut have always kind of liked violet and bailee.' She looked down her cheeks heating up. Lucas' heart nearly pounced. 'I'd always thought of violet and something starting with b to be honest. What do you think you'll work as.' Lucas answered honestly. The waitress came over and gave Lucas and Riley their margarita. 'Bachelor to become a social worker. It's a short course so I'd have time to raise the kids. And maybe if you want after we have the twins we could have 1 or 2 more.' She asked hesitantly. 'As many as we want. And we'd have a big yard and a dog.' Lucas finished for her and she smiled. 'OOO and bunnies.' She yelled making herself giggle. 'Maya and Zay would probably live very close and smackle and Farkle would be making millions across the country. Your mum and dad would be like a 20 minutes away and my parents would come visit every so often. Sounds perfect doesn't it.' Lucas dazed and Riley found herself daydreaming as well. 'And when ever you were stressing about your permanent record, or going through an identity crisis, or wanting to follow the big seniors. I would be there to support you.' Lucas continued and Riley beamed, she needed that. 'And I'll help you with all your choices and when you feel like you aren't as good as others I'll help you through that. Why can't we go there now.' Riley sighed and Lucas squeezed her hand while eating his pizza. 'Because we have to get there first. We have to live through all this high school lovely dovey to get to our amazing future.' He breathed and Riley hummed finishing off her second piece of pizza. 'Oh shit it's 9:30 we better get going princess.' Lucas insisted and quickly payed for the bill. Riley and Lucas ran to the subway and just as they were about to reach the cover rain starting pouring from the sky. Riley couldn't help but laugh and start singing Galway girl. 'MY PRETTY LITTLE GALWAY GIRL.' Riley sung and Lucas watched her from afar awe'ing At the girls beauty. 'COME ON LUCAS.' She called out to him, she ran over to him and grabbed his hand pulling him out to the rain. He spun her around her top moving around slightly. Lucas had the biggest smile on his face as he watched her spin the rain dripping down her forehead. Not being able to resist he pulled Riley in and kissed him passionately. Riley popped her foot up and smiled into the embrace. After a few moments Lucas pulled away slightly. 'Ok princess we really have to go otherwise you'll have another shoe to add to your bucket.' He perked and nodded fiercely remembering her deadline. They raced on to the subway and stood by the door impatiently waiting for their stop. Once the doors opened for bleeker street they raced off hand in hand. They arrived at Riley's door at 10:42 and Lucas pulled her in for one last kiss. The electricity pulsed through there body and they both sadly pulled away. 'Those kisses give me even more adrenaline than when I snuck off to Shawn's with Maya.' She whispered and Lucas laughed. 'Yes and you left me to talk to your mum. All about my choice.' He retorted and her smile grew. 'All about you choosing me ?' She asked and Lucas kissed her lips again. 'Fishing for compliments are we.' He jokes and Riley rolled her eyes. 'By the way it was about you. Of course.' He finished and opened the door for her. Riley walked in and Lucas followed behind her. 'Goodbye Cory. Goodbye Topanga. I'll probably see you on taco day.' He fretted ready to leave when a hand stopped him. 'Riley head to bed doll.' Cory called and Riley stomped her way to bed. 'Yes sir.' Lucas spoke looking down. 'Thankyou for taking my daughter out.' He answered sincerely and patted Lucas on the back. Lucas looked at him confused and then he popped his bottom lip a little, happy about the outcome. 'Anytime sir.' He answered and then he walked out going home. Thinking about her.

A work in progress-rucas |4| go
Chapter 4. "Go" FOURTH. THIRD POV. 'Riley' he whispered as he gained his vision back and his breathing slowed to its normal rate. He could see her worriedly sitting up right on her bed, still singing la vie en rose. He saw Tylah timidly approach him and give him a cup of water and he gave her an apologetic smile. 'I'm so sorry. That was so inappropriate of me.' Lucas apologised and both Topanga and Tylah's face softened. 'Lucas you have absolutely nothing to apologise for.' Topanga reassured and Lucas saw Riley's eyebrows crease in confusion. 'Wait mum you know him.' Riley questioned her eyes darting back and forth. Riley couldn't comprehend what was happening. Something about the mysterious boy in front of her made her feel so warm, safe and complete, but she had no idea who he was. He seemed so familiar and her brain was starting to ache at how much she was thinking about it. All she knew is she wanted this boy in her life. 'Yeah riles you know how I told you about your medication.' Riley's mum eased and Riley slightly recalled the conversation they had had only a few minutes earlier. Oh what she would do to get rid of memory loss she thought and her fists clenched. 'Well he's one of the things you forgot.' Topanga whispered and Riley's jaw dropped. She had forgotten someone. Someone that she could tell was so important to her, even if it was only a short time. Her heart ached and she wanted nothing more than to cry and punch something. Why did this have to happen to her, what did she ever do to deserve to forget someone. She looked over at Lucas the tears trailing down her cheeks. Riley could see he was trying to keep his composure but she could tell he was so upset about the situation. 'Can everyone go I just want some alone time.' She croaked and she could see all the people rushing to comfort her. 'Please' she yelled, she saw her Mother flinch before she lowly nodded and trotted out of the room. Lucas walked over towards the door but stopped before he had to leave her. He didn't want to leave her. He wanted her to remember and he wanted her to not be in pain anymore, he didn't want to never see her again and for her to never remember him again. He wanted to be her friend, love her, date her, maybe even marry her. For once in his life he really wanted something. But of course he could not have it. 'Riley.' He simpered seeing the upset girl. He could only assume she was upset because she didn't remember him but he wasn't sure and he didn't like to assume. Riley looked away struggling to watch the boy so devastated and upset. Riley's one goal in life was to not make people devastated and upset. She hated this, she actually hated something for once. Riley would never understand or forgive who ever put her here. Why did the earth have to be this way. After a few moments Riley managed to let a shy 'go.' And she heard the door close. He deserved someone who could remember him, he deserved to forget her, she wasn't worth it she thought as the tears finally starting to free themselves from her eyes. ---------------------------------------- Lucas was sitting awkwardly on the couch of the Matthews apartment. He wasn't really sure how he got to their apartment. All he remembered was seeing Zay out the front and then Zay ushering him to his car. Clearly instead of his house he was taking him to Riley's house. A moment later Maya, Josh, smackle and Farkle all walked into the living room all sitting across from Lucas except for Josh who sat next to Zay. Lucas stared at them weirdly and wondered why he was summoned her. Well more like kidnapped and taken here. 'So' Maya started and Lucas almost flew out of his seat at her demanding tone. Zay stifled a laugh earning a death glare from Lucas. ' we know that Riley doesn't remember you. Well or Zay but that's unimportant.' Maya spoke and Zay held his hand to his heart offended. 'Ouch Penelope.' He wailed and Josh burst out laughing at her middle name. 'Oh shut up peed-myself-in-third-grade.' She mocked and Lucas covered his mouth with his hand, shocked that she knew that. 'I told you and Josh that out of secrecy.' He scolded and Maya just sighed brushing him off. 'Yeah yeah whatever. Secrecy shmcrecy.' It was only then that Lucas realised how much time Zay must be spending with these people. They all get along like a family and Zay fits right in with no hesitation. Lucas' heart clenched at the fact that he barely new anything that was going on with Zay these days. He's been so caught up on himself and Riley he barely noticed him. Lucky Zay is doing good he reassured himself and calmed his nerves. 'Ok down to serious business. We have a plan. It's not a very good one but it's a plan.' She started but was cut off by smackle and Farkle raising there hands. 'Yes robots.' She mumbled under her breathe and they both grabbed folders from their backpacks. 'Now Maya. Smackle and I have done all the psychological, scientific and mathematic equations to ensure that this plan will work.' Farkle spoke proudly and motioned for isadora to continue. 'And Farkle and I have never been wrong. There is a slight factor that could throw our whole equation off but with the patient we decided to Rule that out considering it is very unlikely.' Smackle finished. 'Yeah Maya it's a pretty good plan. I'm Riley's uncle and I know she's gonna love it.' Josh clarified reaching out for her hand. 'Yeah yeah I'm Riley's uncle. We get it boing. We get it.' She stammered and Josh sighed looking at the couch cushion lightly laughing. 'So what's the plan.' Lucas timidly questioned his eyes focused on the photo frame that was just above the fire. It was Riley taken from a side view, a pink sunset shone behind her but he could only see her face. He could only see his sunset. 'Well we just make her remember you every day.' Maya nonchalantly spoke like it was easy. 'Yeah like we haven't though of that Maya.' Lucas replied sarcastically causing Maya to glare at him. Lucas shivered at her harsh glare, if looks could kill Lucas would be 10 feet under right now 'Umm there's more Sundance.' 'Ok then what else.' He asked his leg shaking up and down in anticipation. 'We make a scrapbook. We add all the Memories you already have like photos and conversations that you could write down and every day she wakes up she could read it and then she would know.' Maya offered and Lucas buzzed at the idea. He quickly bought himself down to reality and started blurting out all the things that could go wrong. What if Riley didn't want to remember him. There were so many what ifs and from Lucas' experiences he knew that, anything bad that can happen, will happen. It's a law for god sake. 'Have hope.' Maya whispered and Lucas saw a glimmer of sadness in her eye. 'Riley taught me how to have hope. Riley taught me so much. But I will always be thankful that she taught me how to have hope and how to love. Lucas I understand how you're feeling. You want to hide from hope and love because you are scared of the failure. You're scared of reality coming in and ruining everything. But Lucas it won't. You have to hope Lucas. She'll teach you that. She already is.' Maya pondered the tears only slightly spilling from out of her eyes. 'Well then. Let's do this thing.' Lucas croaked and though her eyes were still sad Maya cracked a smile. 'We already made it, but you need to add all your conversations. Favourite moments and everything that is personal between you two. Also have fun. She really loves you.' Maya glimmered and Lucas gave her wide smile and pulled everyone in for a group hug. 'Thank you all so much. You don't know how much this means to me, I get my Riley back.' He cried and they all hugged him tighter. ---------------------- After a few moments of hugging Lucas darted off into Riley's room. He stopped in the door way and looked around. It was so, Riley. It was colourful and happy yet sophisticated and mature. He saw the makeup splattered on her dressing table. Her neat closet filled with colourful clothing and her photo wall. There was not a hint of black in this room. The room described her in every way possible and Lucas' heart warmed. He felt safe here. He didn't feel isolated and lonely anymore. He felt comfortable and secure and loved. Walking over to her photo wall he glanced down at all her smiley pictures. Some of her in the park, at concerts, at school, selfies with her friends, family photos, her and her non-existent little brother, but there was one in particular that caught his eye. It was her sitting on her hospital bed with her favourite bear in one arm and then on her other side was Lucas. She was looking at him with a weird glimmer and her eyes and Lucas seemed to match her expression fairly well. They were so content and peaceful. He sighed quickly becoming saddened at the overly happy brunette who did not exist today. He motioned him self towards what he could only assume was a bay window and plopped himself down on it. He looked out at the leafy green trees and pristine grass. The sky had an aqua tint to it and the sun fell on the trees making them glow, and the pavement shine like silver in the light rain. He snapped back into reality and grabbed the scrapbook that was perched next to him. He opened the back page and with the pen he found on Riley's bed side table he scribbled a heading. Our talks. Not knowing how to write this in a novel form he began to dot point. -we talk about cuddle bunnies. -we talk about happiness -we talk about our dreams. -we talk about or emotions. -we talk about hope. -we talk about dogs. -we talk about purple cats. -we talk about my blue shirts. -we talk about our favourite tv shows. -we talk about summer rain. -we talk about leaves. -we talk about food. (Our food is Jellybeans). -we talk about our hard ships. -sometimes we don't even talk. We just communicate. -we talk about anything and everything and you should never be scared to talk to me. I love you Riley. He hesitantly wrote as his wet tears hit the paper. He loved her and he missed her like he had never missed anyone before. His heart ached for her, for her to be his. Why did love have to hurt. Why love have to be so real and unforgiving. Why did love have to hurt. But most importantly why did love have to cease to exist in Lucas' reality. Lucas' jaw clenched and he walked over to her wall and threw his hand into the plaster. He let out a loud grunt as he did and then fell down to the floor. Hot sobs taking over his body. He heard and felt someone near him but he didn't take notice. He wanted her. He needed her. But he couldn't have her. Not now. Probably not ever. And that was the last thought before he was laid down on Riley's bed by Maya as she cleaned his knuckles. He was already asleep by that point. Because sleeping was the only place where he could truly have all of Riley. A/n Omg
