Okay but like. Sir Palamedes and the questing beast. At first I was thinking, okay so.
After getting heartbroken by his doomed loved for Isault, Sir Palamedes devotes his life to pursuing an outwardly beautiful creature, made of an amalgamation of many other things. It was created as the result of a horrible crime, and from it’s belly is coming a horrible howl, like the yapping of many dogs, because the beast is perpetually pregnant with something that will tear it to shred when it comes out. It literally carries its own death. Furthermore, the creature’s very existence represents the discord which will destroy King Arthur’s court from the inside.
And this pursuit is “as doomed to fail as his love for Isault”.
That maps with his heartbreak over Dulcinea (Isault) and his battle with Cytherea (the beast), right?
But the rest of the myth doesn’t fit. Depending on the sources, we have these further elements:
-He picked up the quest from another king, Pelinore, whose family had been passing down the duty to hunt the beast from generations to generations. Only that family was said to be able to kill it.
-Sir Palamedes is doomed to fail, until he converts to christianity, at which point another knight helps him lure the beast into a lake to kill it.
-The creature may or may not be in love with Sir Palamedes. This is apparently from some side plot in an early version of The Once And Future King where he disguises himself as the beast and it falls in love with him, Looney Tunes style, and that is why he decides to devote his life to hunting it. In the same book btw the guy who was hunting it before decided to drop the quest and then the beast was wasting away for lack of attention so he literally nursed it back to health, released it, then started hunting it again. PLUS at another point the dude is captured and the beast shows up to rescue him, so. That’s some weird ass codependent enemy situationship that Sir Palamedes just waded into, is what I’m saying.
ANYWAY with all of these extra plot point in mind, I have thus decided that Cytherea isn’t the Questing Beast to Palamedes Sextus. Nona is.
(She carries the howling of her true self, which will destroy her when it is released. She is brought to a lake [the tomb] before dying. Pal “converts” by becoming Paul. She was born of a crime. She heralds the empire’s fall. Palamedes more or less inherited the task of dealing with the revenant beast(s) from Cassiopeia. She’s a giraffe— wait, what?)

Review: Knight's Shadow
Tumblr media
Synopsis:
Following his beloved debut, Traitor's Blade, Sebastien de Castell returns with volume two of his fast-paced fantasy adventure series, inspired by the swashbuckling action and witty banter of The Three Musketeers. Knight's Shadow continues the series with a thrilling and dark tale of heroism and betrayal in a country crushed under the weight of its rulers' corruption.
A few days after the horrifying murder of a duke and his family, Falcio val Mond, swordsman and First Cantor of the Greatcoats, begins a deadly pursuit to capture the killer. But Falcio soon discovers his own life is in mortal danger from a poison administered as a final act of revenge by one of his deadliest enemies. As chaos and civil war begin to overtake the country, Falcio has precious little time left to stop those determined to destroy his homeland.
Plot:
Hiding out in the village, Falico honestly could not believe they had gotten this far. Saving Aline originally was a task he was willing to die for, but somehow they managed to survive, bringing Aline to the Tailor who wants to make her queen. With Trin on the hunt for their heads, it was no surprise that the village they were hiding out in, betrayed them, and brought Trin to their door. Escaping once again, Falico, Kast, Brasti, Valiana, and a new greatcoat named Dariana, head out to convince the dukes to back Aline’s claim to the throne, promising that with Aline in charge, the Greatcoats will protect the trade routes once again, their villages will stop uprising, and it will work out for their better. The first duke on their mission was Isault, who agreed that Falico could settle an uprising in one of his border villages. Doing as he promised, Falico comes back to the kingdom only to find the Duke and his family killed, with the guards believing Falico did it. Escaping again, Falico knows someone is targeting the dukes, and even though they all hate him, Falico is willing to put his life on the line to do what's right and bring the lands back to the way his beloved King once had them.
Thoughts:
Sebastien de Castell comes back with another wonderful novel, diving deeper into the lands that Falcio val Mond, First Cantor of the Greatcoats swore to protect. With the same witty remarks as the story is told third person from Falcio, de Castell ups their game by having this novel not only extend the world but dive a bit more into the past, especially on Falico and why he acts the way he does - aka throwing himself head first into every fight hoping for death. Going deep into the death of his wife, his relationship with the King, and how he views himself; de Castell added depth to our character, and by the end wrote him as a completely new man who is going to take the remainder of the series by storm. With this stuff, de Castell does not hold back, bringing along a tone of seriousness and adulthood to this fantasy novel. The gory details of the death of Aline (Falcio’s wife), show the range de Castell has as a writer, as he brings our hero into the worst moments of his life Along with Falcio, de Castell also gave us more background on the other two of the trio, Kest and Brasti, giving their characters a bit more depth and purpose throughout the story that are their own and not directly tied to Falcio. Giving these characters their own side quest and achievements, allows the novel to feel more realistic, as unlike the first novel, not everything revolves around Falcio and his desires. Continuing with epic battles, and more witty banter, de Castell opens the world a bit more, diving deeper into Saints (like how Kast is one and what that means), the Dashini, and really leans towards the magical and governmental side of this story. With the world expanding, de Castell really compelled readers to keep reading this hundred novels, by keeping it engaging with a mix of history, new battles, people to save, and people to kill. With the series' long arc being revealed a bit more, de Castell made sure to let readers know that they are nowhere near done with the Greatcoats and their tale, and hopefully, neither are you.

so I was messing around with Azalea Dolls viking maker and honestly I love it bc it gives me nearly accurate looks for my ocs
So anyways! I present to you
Isault Pendragon-Agreste
Some history:
Her original story is that Isault is the third daughter of a powerful family in a druid clan. She is surprisingly powerful despite not being clan heir. She also has a temper that is incredibly terrifying. Because of her temper, Isault does her best to try to keep it in check. Her temper however earned her an unwanted servant.
in me and @fullmetalpotterhead‘s official novel series, Isault is the daughter of a powerful duchess who marries the crown prince to secure peace due to growing unrest that could cause a civil war. As the queen of her country, Agreste, Isault is very level headed and commands respect with her presence. despite her temper, Isault searches for the most peaceful solution possible.
random fun facts:
-she can hold her liquor - She is a very loving mother  - In the Brilliancy Universe, her patron goddess is Hyacynth, the goddess of earth.
She’s also the mother to my OC Iris!

Menw snippet
Someone anonymous asked for a snippet of Menw off of this WIP list.
So this is an interesting doc. In the Twin Tales universe, there is a villain. Said villain is currently in another kingdom and employes a knight named Menw to spy for him. And then through some spoiler-based magic and stuff, Menw ends up stuck impersonating Princess Julia.
Is this relevant to the main plot? No, not really at all. Is it nearly 10k words already? Yes....
Here's the best snippet I can give without spoilers.
Lady Isault, one of the few noblewomen who was actually friends with Julia, stopped her in the corridor that morning. “Julia, you look stunning. Is that a new headdress?”
“Thank you,” he preened a little under the compliment. “No, it must have been hidden though, Ella only found it yesterday.”
“It looks gorgeous.” She was going the same easy as Menw so they walked in companionable silence for a little longer.
Or Menw hoped it felt that way. He still struggled to not try to fill conversation lulls in situations like this.
“I think that trip to Camelot was good for you,” Lady Isault said when they drew up to a corridor split and would part ways. “You’ve smiled more often since you returned.”
Menw laughed cheerfully. “Sometimes a little fresh air and a new point of view can change how you see things.”
“You’re sure it’s not a little prince on the way?” she asked with a suggestive look at Menw’s stomach.
He shook his head. “Not yet.”
Perhaps she could sense how much Menw did not want to talk about it. “Whatever it was, I’m glad.” She bobbed a small curtsey and left to the right.
Menw continued straight ahead to the staircase leading to the hall where he would be having breakfast with his father. Just a father and daughter affair. She nodded to the guards with the customary blue ribbon around their spears for today as they opened the doors.
King Alineid was slouched at the table, also dressed in blues. Not as extravagant as years in the past, but it was clear that he still wanted to celebrate as much as he could. “Good morning, Jules,” he greeted.
