Women’s History Meme || Executions and Murders (5/5) ↬ Blanche of Bourbon, Queen consort of Castile
At a loss for a motive or cause behind Blanche’s death, Ayala resorts to another apocryphal story. One day, he writes, Pedro was hunting in the environs of Jerez when a shepherd claiming to have a message from God approached him. Pedro was enjoined to renew conjugal relations with Blanche and was assured legitimate heirs to the throne. If he disobeyed, he was promised a tragic end. Suspecting a conspiracy, the king ordered the imprisonment of the shepherd and dispatched Lopez de Cordoba (his camarero) and Matheos Fernandez (cancilfer del sello de fa poridad) to see if Blanche had been a party to the ruse. Though she declared her innocence, Pedro nevertheless ordered her death. … While it is impossible to know the true circumstances of Blanche’s death, Ayala’s story is a useful fabrication invented to highlight the absence of legitimate heirs to the throne, a feature of Pedro’s story intended to lessen the burden of Enrique’s illegitimacy. At the same time, Ayala’s portrayal of Blanche as victim, up to and including the circumstances of her reported death, is a constant feature of the chronicle. If Pedro in fact ordered her death, which is what Ayala wants us to believe, Blanche was one of his most undeserving victims, and the king was at his most merciless and cruel. As if by God’s judgment, or so Catalina implies, Maria de Padilla died shortly thereafter, in July 1361. She likely died of natural causes—as Blanche may have—leaving Pedro four children: Alfonso, Beatriz, Constanza, and Isabel. Immediately after her death, Pedro proclaimed her queen of Castile and ordered a royal burial, with all attendant honors. A funeral cortege carried her body to the monastery of Santa Clara de Astudillo, which she had founded in 1354. In 1362, her remains were transferred to the royal chapel in Seville for permanent repose . — Pedro the Cruel of Castile (1350-1369) by Clara Estow

Note
An unsolicited observation but in 5x17 I never really thought much about Buck being at the house with Eddie and Christopher while they are packing to leave for his dad's retirement party in El Paso . But at the beginning of the scene Eddie is hurrying Chris along saying "...we still have to pick up Tia Pepa". Recently it occurred to me that Buck probably wasn't there just to hang out. He was probably taking them to the airport which means he was taking Pepa as well. It made me start to wonder, canonically, about Buck's place in the extended Diaz family as well.
It's small throwaway lines like this that I'm now starting to think have been used to imply that Buck and Eddie have a much more involvement in each other's lives than we have been shown on screen. Particularly in the wake of recent episodes that finally seems to be revealing those interactions and framing them as normal in their lives instead of as a "new normal" because of the lightning strike.
I'm sure this is obvious to you. You are have such an eye for detail when it comes to this show and this ship.
Thank you @spiceyreads for the ask and I agree with you because the time Buck spent with Eddie and Chris in 5x17 "Hero Complex" (even though the audience didn't see Chris in the episode, it was implied he was there) was just as important as the scenes Buck and Eddie had with Pepa in 2x4 "Stuck". Buck met her when he drove Eddie to the hospital. (Buck driving Eddie to the hospital was possibly another piece of relevant information regarding Buck and Eddie's relationship that may have been missed by some. They were at work so why did Buck drive Eddie to the hospital? Well... it's because Buck always drives when they're in the car together just like he did at the end of 2x3 when he drove Eddie to pick Chris up from school after the earthquake, he drove in 4x12 during the treasure hunt and in 4x13 when he drove the battalion car so they could save Charlie.)
Tumblr media
Buck and Eddie are extremely involved in each other's lives and even though the audience doesn't always see it, they are especially when other scenes with their relatives are taken into account. I've included two examples below (one for Buck and one for Eddie).
Buck knows Eddie's family
Tumblr media
In 3x10 "Christmas Spirit" Eddie told Hen, since the 118 had to work, Chris was going to spend Christmas Day with his abuela and she was going to take him to his aunt's (Pepa's) but Isabel was the one who took Chris to the firehouse. Some may have missed it but Buck was probably the one who contacted her. Here's the connection. The family dinner at the firehouse was Buck's idea and he asked Maddie to call Athena to see what she thought about it and they had their conversation while Maddie and Frank were driving to the woods where she killed Doug. Buck worked with Athena to pull it all off and Athena thanked him after they were done eating dinner right before they took the family picture. Here's the thing... it's unlikely that Athena knows Eddie's abuela but Buck knows her and he knows Pepa too so he was probably the one who called her and explained if she brought Chris to the firehouse, he would get to spend time with Eddie on the holiday.
Eddie talks to Buck's parents
Tumblr media
In 4x5 "Buck Begins", when Buck's parents went to the firehouse, Margaret told Buck after he went upstairs, the firefighters seemed to like him a lot and it was probably Eddie who talked to them while they were waiting for Buck to return to the firehouse. Here's the connection. They met Chimney in 4x4 which means they would have mentioned him by name if he was one of the firefighters who spoke well of their son. Bobby wasn't there because he took Buck to the doctor, therefore Eddie and Hen were the only two people from A-shift left. Hen wasn't shown on-screen prior to the scene but Eddie was and he told Buck he had some visitors and nodded his head towards the stairs. After Buck walked past him, Eddie watched him walk up there. Therefore Eddie was probably the one who talked to the Buckleys and told them only good things about their son. Also Margaret said, "You were born to save someone and that's what you do every day". Well... she didn't know jack squat about Buck so how in the frick frack did she know what he does every day? The answer is she didn't, until Eddie told her.
Again, thank you for the ask and I hope my response added further credence to the important roles Buck and Eddie have in each other's lives.

MARY OF BURGUNDY, THE RICH
Duchess of Burgundy, countess of Flanders, and archduchess of Austria, who fought to save her land from France and preserved what was to become the modern country of Belgium.
In Mary of Burgundy's days, Burgundy encompassed the area surrounding Dijon, Flanders, Picardy, and Brabant. It bordered France, Austria, and the English territories in the northeast part of continental Europe. The future of Burgundy was of utmost importance in the ongoing struggle for power between England and France, as well as in the many smaller conflicts throughout central and northern Europe. Mary's father, who was to be remembered as Charles the Bold, was the count of Charolois.  Her grandfather, known as Philip the Good, reigned as the duke of Burgundy. Mary's mother was Isabelle of Bourbon , the second wife of Charles. His first wife Catherine de France had died young, with no children; Mary of Burgundy was therefore the sole heir to a large and rich territory.
Since Charles had no male heirs, potential marriages with Mary of Burgundy were plotted almost from the day of her birth on February 13,1457. Her entrance into the world was celebrated in a grand style, and her baptism at the cathedral of Coudenberg was considered "the greatest magnificence ever seen for a girl." This elegance may have been due to the political position of the child, or it simply may have been expected of the stylish House of Burgundy. Whatever the reason, the festivities lasted an entire day, and Louis of France, later to rule as King Louis XI, was appointed as Mary's godfather. Mary's grandmother, Isabella of Portugal (1397–1471), filled the role of godmother. Gifts were brought by representatives from across Europe, including some from a number of cities which were in rebellion against Duke Philip the Good at the time. Mary of Burgundy spent most of her childhood at the ducal castle of Ten Waele at Ghent. She enjoyed an affectionate relationship with her father, even though he was almost constantly away from her. Especially after 1465, when Charles became the duke of Burgundy, he was personally involved in controlling and governing the cities of his territory. He also developed a flair for conquering new cities, and military operations kept him occupied for months at a time. Isabelle of Bourbon died when Mary was eight years old, and the girl was raised primarily by Lady Hallewijn, the wife of the duke's chief steward. Lady Hallewijn was a constant companion and loyal attendant to Mary throughout her life. Several cousins and other children from noble families lived with the heiress as playmates during her childhood. Mary's great-aunt (possibly Agnes of Burgundy) was responsible for arranging the series of governesses that educated the young lady. Not much is known about Mary's education, but it is clear that she could speak French, Flemish, and English. She enjoyed reading fables and Roman histories, and may have had some training in political philosophy. Her later actions as reigning duchess suggest that she was prepared early in life to govern. Mary developed a keen interest in hunting, riding, and other outdoor sports, as well as in gardening. She cared for her falcons as if they were children; later in life, her husband would express surprise at Mary's insistence on keeping the birds in the bedroom, even within a few days of their wedding. Mary's personal seal was a picture of herself on horseback with a falcon on her wrist. She had a complete court of attendants from her infancy, including a dwarf named Madame de Beauregard. Mary soon made her choice among the many suitors for her hand by selecting Archduke Maximilian of Austria, the future Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I, who became her co-ruler. The marriage took place at Ghent on 19 August 1477, when she was 20 years old, while he was two years younger. Mary's marriage into the House of Habsburg initiated two centuries of contention between France and the Habsburgs, a struggle that climaxed with the War of the Spanish Succession bethween 1701 and 1714. When they had time, the couple indulged themselves with dancing, hunting, music and the love for animals. Mary tried to teach him iceskating, which he struggled to master. They read romances together. Contrary to the custom of the time, Mary and Maximilian shared the same private quarters and bedroom. Mary nursed their children herself and used to dine with merchants from Dijon. She entusiastically cheered for her husband during tournaments, in which he exceled in jousting, not just in feats of strength but also in the luxury he lavished on the equipments, horses, accessories and ornaments. At first, they talked to each other in Latin.  With Maximilian by her side, Mary's position became stronger, politically and militarily. Although he came with no money nor army, nor support from the Empire, and no prior experience in governance, his competence in military matters and his prestige as the son of an emperor boosted the stability of her territories. He took over the war effort, concerning both military and financial details. In 1482, a falcon hunt in the woods near Wijnendale Castle was organised by Adolph of Cleves, Lord of Ravenstein, who lived in the castle. Mary loved riding and was hunting with Maximilian and knights of the court when her horse tripped, threw her in a ditch, and then landed on top of her, breaking her back. She died several weeks later on 27 March from internal injuries, having made a detailed will. She was buried in the Church of Our Lady in Bruges on 3 April 1482. She was pregnant at the time. Maximilian was devastated. She had initially hidden the extent of her injury to calm him down. When he continued to display uncontrollable grief, she had to force him out of her chamber so that she could discuss matters of the state with her vassals, concerning which she asked them to keep their loyalty oath to him and their children. Maximilian was not present when she said her last words.

Protective Jace please???? Maybe someone hits on reader and Jace gets super possessive or something???? Maybe with a really soft and snuggly reader next to Jace’s hard stoic-ness???
possessive jace possessive jace possessive jace!!!!! <33
Tumblr media
Hands Off- Jace (Wayland? Lightwood? Herondale?) x Reader
warnings: none?
note: i need to write more for jace, he's just so <33 and i'm still only on the 4th book rn i need to keep reading!!
Jace had decided it would be safest if you stuck by his side tonight. Him, Alec and Isabelle were out doing what they do best, demon hunting. This had led them into Pandemonium, a place you had never been before. The lights and the music was enough to give you a headache.
As Izzy and Alec parted from you and Jace into another room, Jace had told you to stay at the bar and to not talk to anybody until he’s back. You told him how it would be quite mean if someone had started a conversation with you and you had to just sit there and ignore them, but Jace didn’t care. He didn’t want anyone thinking they could take what was his.
You stood by the bar, looking around at all the people with very unique styles. You then took your phone out, checking to see if there were any texts to reply to, anything to keep you from this boredom that had been thrown upon you.
“Hey, I don’t think I’ve seen you in here before.” A man said, appearing at your side. He was around the same height as Jace but had short, brown hair with matching brown eyes. “I’m Will, by the way.” He added with a smile. You knew Jace would be mad if you spoke to him, but he seemed nice, what’s the worst that could happen?
“I’m y/n, and you’re right, I’ve never been here before. I’m waiting for my boyf-”
“Can I get you a drink, y/n?” He asked, testing out your name.
“No, it’s okay, I won’t be here long-”
“Please, I insist!” He said, his voice almost demanding.
“Okay,” you chuckled uncomfortably, “well, I’ll just have a lemonade then, please.”
“Pfft, really? Nothing stronger?” He pushed, his hand playing with the strap of your black cami top.
“No, I don’t want-”
“Hey!” A familiar voice shouted from across the room, causing a few eyes to be drawn to your boyfriend, “hands off my girlfriend!”
Will removed his hand and looked around, spotting a slightly sweaty, dirty Jace heading this way.
“I told you I have a boyfriend.” You said softly.
“Y/n, what the fuck, I told you not to talk to anybody!” He threw his hands in the air.
“I didn’t mean to, Jace. I just-”
“I’ll admit it was entirely my fault.” Will said, stepping away from the bar as you now stood by Jace’s side, snuggling into his shoulder.
“I know it was.” Jace said, pulling you closer to his side, his arm wrapping around your waist, “my girl wouldn’t even look at you twice otherwise.”
“Jace, he was only offering to buy me a drink…” You attempt to stand up for Will, but Jace doesn’t have it.
“Yeah, and then what about after that? Get her drunk and take her home with you?” He laughed, “I don’t think so.” He gently let go of you and stepped forwards towards the other man.
And at that, Jace threw the first punch.
... ... ...
Back at the institute, you refused to draw a healing rune on your boyfriend, telling him to heal like a mundane, it may teach him a lesson, to calm his anger and possessiveness. However, you didn’t let him suffer completely, you did clean up his bruised, bloody knuckles.
“I can’t believe you, Jace.” You sigh, wiping the blood from his hand.
“What? Did you just expect me to stand and watch his terrible attempt at flirting with you?” Jace chuckles, “I don’t think so.”
“He wasn’t flirting with me!”
“He was.”
“He wasn’t!” You insist.
“Darling, he was.”
As you gently wrap the bandage over his hand, you can’t help but take in how beautiful his hands were. They held quite a few scars, telling a story of his unfortunate, troubled life. After wrapping him up, you place a kiss over the bandage.
“Baby,” you say, standing up from the bed, “I think our ideas of flirting are very different.”
“I know,” Jace says, looking at his bandaged hand. You put away your mini medical box and come back, standing in front of Jace as he was still sat on your bed, “but he was still flirting with you.”
You sigh and turn to walk away, but Jace quickly pulls you by the waist so you fall onto the bed with him. You giggle as he places light kisses on your neck, attempting to push him away as it tickled.
“He was flirting. And only I can flirt with you, okay?” He whispers against you, his teeth lightly grazing your skin. “Everyone else can get fucked, you’re mine,” he says between kisses, “only mine!”

As you may have noticed, at the beginning of this year the Book Society network took a small break. We are now slowly coming back starting with our first event of 2021! Before introducing it, we would like to inform you about a few minor changes to the layout our events. Firstly, there will no longer be a book of the month, but of course that you're still more than welcome to buddy-read any book you choose. Secondly, our events will now be running for two months instead of just one. We hope that this will allow more people to participate and finish their books, especially during busier times of the year. Thank you for your understanding and for your kind support!
And now, without further ado we present our March and April reading event! This time, the members have chosen Author Debuts as our theme. Come and join us by reading the first-ever book published by any author of your choice. This event is open to everyone, not just our members.
✧ how to participate:
optional: reblog this post; check out our network and members
read (or reread) a book of your choice that fits this month’s theme
share what book you’ve chosen, thoughts, reactions, and/or creations
use the tag #booksocietynet in your posts, and include “@booksociety ’s Author Debuts Event: [insert book title here]” in the description of your creations
the event starts on March 15 and ends on April 31

Vampire Academy Fancast part 1
Hi, guys!! I have decided to do Vampire Academy fan cast. But I am starting with just the women. Both based on the chracter description (from Wikia), but also based on who I think would make great possibilities to play these characters. Some actors may not look exactly like they are described. But that’s okay-- because hair dye and color contacts exist!!
Also, I may have 1 or more choice actresses for some of them. I also kinda gave up on using images because some of them were too large to use on here. Let’s begin.
Rose Hathaway:
“She has thick, long, dark brown hair that shines black in the right light, dark brown eyes with golden flecks, and lightly tanned skin, which she herself describes as being "the color of the inside of an almond"
1. Lulu Antariska  (25 yrs old)
Tumblr media
(karolinadeanwrites gif)
2. Bianca Santos (30 yrs old)
Tumblr media
(gif from blakehelps)
3. Medalion Rahimi  (28 yrs old)
Tumblr media
(gif from olivaholt.tumblr)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lissa Dragomir:
“Like most female Moroi, she is tall and slim. She has a beautiful pale-skinned complexion, jade-green eyes, and platinum-blond hair”
1. Olivia Rose Keegan (20 yrs old)
Tumblr media
2.  Elena Kampouris (23 yrs old)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(gif from helpersofindie)
3. Angourie Rice  (19 yrs)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(think I got these gifs from wattpad??)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Tasha Ozera:
“described as having 'raven-black' hair. She had a heart shaped face with large, pale blue eyes. Like all Moroi, she had very pale skin”
1. Katie McGrath  (37 yrs old)
Tumblr media
(got from pinterest: Noctis Luna Witch)
2. Merritt Patterson (30 yrs old)
Tumblr media
4. Elyse Levesque (35 yrs old)
Tumblr media
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Sydney Sage:
“dark golden-blond hair that reaches just past her shoulders (although it grows longer and longer throughout the series) and brown eyes that turn gold in the light”
1. Virgina Gardner (25 yrs old)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(eternalroleplay gif)
2. Giorgia Whigman (23 yrs old)
Tumblr media
(thequeenofindie gif)
3. Natalia Dyer (25 yrs old)
Tumblr media
(nataliadyeredits)
Lastly, I have pictured the actress Meg Donnelly as a Sydney Sage or Mia Rinaldi choice. I was going to add her, but could not find a gif that fit.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Natalie Dashkov:
“She is tall, and has pale skin with thick. long jet black hair and jade green eyes”
1. Emma Dumont  (25 yrs old)
she played wonderful mean girl in the show Tagged. And since then, I can’t stop picturing her as Natalie.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(got this gif from wattpad)
2. Isabelle Fuhrman  (23 yrs old)
Tumblr media
3. But Natalie was described as being kind of awkward. For that, I picture the actress McKaley Miller. Couldn’t find a gif of her that fit
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mia Rinaldi:
she is short, and has blonde curly hair. She also has blue eyes
1. Brec Bassinger (21 yrs old)
Tumblr media
(gif from Virago on Wattpad)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Jill Mastrano:
“tall, slender with a small bust and very pale skin. She is not quite six feet tall, but because she is so slim, she appears taller. Jill has long brown hair and very large jade green eyes, the same color as Lissa's”
1. Mackenzie Foy  (19 yrs old)
Tumblr media
gif-hunts-for-you.tumblr
2. Willow Shields  (20 years old)
Tumblr media
3. Brec Bassinger-- yes, her again.
Tumblr media
(dcladies gif)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Janine Hathaway:
she is about 40 years old, and 5' feet tall, has curly auburn hair, brown eyes.
1. Maxim Roy
Tumblr media
2. Carla Gugino
Tumblr media
3. Bridget Regan
Tumblr media
I think she would also make a a great Sonya Karp.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That’s it for now! <3  I added the ages of some of these actresses in case some of them seem older or much younger than they actually are. I am thinking of doing a part 2 for the male characters. But to be honest, there’s is the hardest to do. Paticularily with Dimitri.
Who are some of your fancasts for the women in VA? Or the men?

Saint Jude's Miracle: A Javier Peña x OFC (Isa) Fanfiction. Chapter VI
Tumblr media
Summary: Javier and Steve reunite and reflect on their past and their present and the hurtful memories they have to carry from their time in Colombia. Meanwhile Isa struggles with her everyday life and not having news from Javier for days is starting to worry her.
Word count: 2,6k
Warnings: PTSD talks, mentions of violence. (This is me trying to solve one plothole from season 2 from a character I really liked and hated at the same time👀)
A/N: So this took longer than I thought, I completely lost the inspiration and words didn’t flow I had to restart this many times. I guess I will look at this in a few weeks and think I should have revised even more, but I promised to post this today, so there it is. This is plot and more plot with a little bit of angst and fluff at the end.
Series masterlist
Chapter VI: Old Friends
Time is a curious thing; here they are many years after: Their bodies are not the same; the jeans are tighter around the belly and the hair is already grey in some parts, wrinkles around the eyes bear witness of the years that had pass through them, but nonetheless the conversation flows as if not a day has passed.
The empty beers sit to the side of the table leaving a small pool of their condensation over the wooden table. The music is loud at the bar and Javi and Steve had been quite for a few minutes now. The question floating above them making the air thicker every second it passes without addressing the matter.
“I should have reach to you sooner” Javi says holding his half bottle, is it the fifth or sixth he has finished?
“Don’t worry about it” Steve shakes his head and leaves his bottle on the pile “I called a few times, but I thought you needed time to process it all”
“The thing is I didn’t” Javi shows half a smile “I really fucked up and when they gave me Cali I thought I could redeem myself. Tried to do it by the book, tried to outsmart them” he leans on the table “and what happened? It was a fucking charade” he snarls
“You did well getting all that shit on the news” the blond agent taps on his friend arm “Shit! I wanted to quit myself when I saw it”
“They didn’t give me another option. But...” Javi crosses his arms over his chest when he feels that familiar feeling, the words and feelings choking him
“You didn’t want to”
“Fuck, I’m a middle age man! This is what I’ve been doing for my whole life? What was I supposed to do?” he exhales deeply, a burden is lifted out of his chest
“Everybody said it was unfair if it helps” Steve consoles
“I guess not Stechner” Javi scoffs
“Oh, you haven’t heard?” Steve comes close “He disappeared. For real, MIA. Nobody has heard from him in years”
“Well, I don’t wish death to anyone...” Javier shakes his head:” who am I kidding? Fuck him!”
The two of them laugh out loud for a few minutes; the waiter guessing that their laughs deserve another round; leaves two cold beers on their table with a wink
“For Stechner, I guess”
“May he rot in hell” and they drink together
“So...about that wife of yours” Steve has been dying to ask more about Isa and Connie has tasked him with getting all the information he can gather.
“Isa” Javier reaches for his wallet. In the small plastic pocket inside it, there’s a picture of the three of them on a photo booth, the same day they had to go to the mall to get Elvi’s photo for her school application.
Elvira is seated on their laps while Javi and Isa smile at her
“Oh, she’s gorgeous. You’ve been always lucky with the ladies, Javi”
“Well, I am. I don’t know how she bears with me. I give her too many headaches”
“Connie was happy when they stopped asking me to go on field operations. Not gonna lie, it felt good for a bit getting back to a desk and just do paperwork. But then...” Steve blue eyes look glossy in this light and after too many beers “I saw myself reflected on the glass doors of the office and shit, it hit me; I was old and dying on a desk. And then you called”
“I understand”
“When you said you were married with a kid, I really couldn’t believe that you and I were once those dudes in Colombia”
“It feels like a million years ago”
“And just a few days ago at the same time” completes Steve and Javier nods
“What does she know? your wife, how she handles all that?”
“She doesn’t. When I met her she was...first of all she had left Laredo before everybody knew me for the Escobar shit, so when we met, we were just two strangers. We could talk and I could kick everything under a rug and let her form an opinion about me by herself without interferences” his gaze wanders over the tables: families having a quite dinner; a couple that has an untouched plate in front of them while they kiss and talk in whispers.
“And after you married?” Steve asks interrupting his thoughts
“I just told her the necessary” he shakes his head the necessary is almost nothing.
“Well, it’s better that way, but I couldn’t hide it from Connie. Man! I was out control; everything and anything could trigger me. I was anxious, paranoid all the time. I woke up in the middle of the night, got my gun out of the safe if I heard a car tire exploding or any loud noise and I’d had my heart beating fast for hours. And let’s not talk about the nightmares”
“The helicopter?” Javi asks, his voice is thin almost a whisper remembering the extreme methods the police used when the hunt for Escobar was on its peak
“Yeah...and many others. I keep on seeing the two of us entering that house, but instead of finding Olivia crying, she’s dead, shot dead as her mum” Steve sniffs and coughs moving uncomfortably on his chair. “That’s when I looked for help”
Javier nods remembering so many nights where he thought his brain could kill him, reimaging that kid in the ally, rescuing Helena, all the things he saw when Los Pepes were unleashed. By your hand.
“We should call it a night, amigo”
“I see your Spanish has not improved. Just the two words you knew back in Colombia” Javi scoffs with a grin
“Cabrón”
“Yep, that’s the second one”
Isa
It’s been two days since he left and he hasn’t called. Isa tries to focus on everything she needs to do before Elvira starts the new school year. She has called Chucho every afternoon thinking that maybe he had some news, but nothing.
“Ese marido tuyo aguanto mientras Elvi era chiquita y ahora que pudo se largo” (Your husband stayed with you while Elvi was a baby and now that she’s grown, he has left you) her mother commented once she got the news that Javi was away and he hadn’t call in three days. News travel fast in a small town and she hears the comments about her, about Javi: he did it again, he left another woman and run away, he left her as he left Lorraine. Every day Isa had to struggle with her own thoughts and the constant reminder from her mother and the ladies in Laredo that something was wrong with Javier.
Her brain repeats the same litany:
He must be caught up in something
Maybe he’s somewhere where there’s not a good connection
Maybe he cannot call for security
Maybe he did run away
Maybe he’s in danger
She tries to stop her mind when it gets that fast spiraling down towards the darker scenarios she can imagine. On the third night after he left and hadn’t called she had a terrible nightmare and she had to keep her little night lamp on as she does every night he spends away and every day since then, the lamp is on while she rests, sleeping just for a few hours and then spending hours turning back and forth trying not to think about the worst possible things she can imagine. What would she do if he never comes back? What would she do if something bad happen to him? Even though they had made peace by making love in that old truck before parting she could not forget their arguments and the things left unsaid. He would never leave them like that, would he?
Isa tries to be calm, not to project her fears and worries onto her daughter but each day she’s challenged with the never ending things she has to do at home each day: laundry, cooking, cleaning, and every time she thinks she’s finished there’s something new that has come up. Elvira is stressed, as any kid her age, watching the summer slipping away with its long days of freedom on top of her dad being away. So she’s more agitated than usual, sassy and misbehaving just to get her mother’s attention.
The trip to the supermarket is a long chant of demands: I want Cereals, I want Ice cream. All Isa can hear is IwanIwantIwantIwant and the wheels of her shopping cart screeching on the ground. She thinks her wrist is about to snap open just trying to hold Elvira’s hand so she sticks to her side.
“It’s really crowded, cielo, stay with me” she sighs trying to be patient.
But the moment, Isa hesitates and looks down to read her shopping list, she’s out
“I’m gonna get my cereal”
“Elvi!”
Isabel gains a few complaints from some old lady that she almost railed over trying to run for her daughter.
“Oh, you want that one?”
“Yes, please. I can’t reach” Isa laughs softly watching her daughter acting polite and looking like an angel towards the stranger woman. The lady gives her the colorful box and Elvi jumps excitedly until she sees her mum at the end of the aisle.
“¿Qué te dije de que te separases de mi?” (What did I tell you about running away from me?” the little girl pouts and answers
“I thought you would say no if I ask for this”
“Ay, Elvi. I’m sorry if she bothered you” Isa smiles to the woman. She is on her 40s, Isa guesses, she has a beautiful elegant visage framed by a brown with blond highlights mane. She smiles widely with her scarlet lips: “No hay problema” (No problem) she answers in Spanish, her accent seems different to the Mexican-American accent Isa is used to listen to in this part of Texas.
“Gracias igualmente. Está obsesionada con esto que está lleno de azúcar” (Thank you anyway, she’s obsessed with this sugary thing” Isa ruffles her child’s hair
“La comprendo, mis hijos son igual” (I understand, my kids are the same)
“¿De dónde es? tiene un acento muy bonito” (Where are you from? you have a very beautiful accent) Isa asks, for a moment she thinks that she might be overstepping but the woman laughs softly patting Isa’s arm with her hand stylishly decorated in elegant gold and diamonds rings, her manicure is perfect.
“Colombia, pero ya llevo unos años acá en los Estados Unidos” (Colombia, but I’ve been here in the USA for a while now)
“¡Oh! me han dicho que es muy bonito” (I’ve been told it’s very beautiful) Elvi grabs her mum by the hem of her dress rushing her to finish the boring conversation, mainly because she wants to get back home and open the box of cereal “Bueno, un gusto” (Well, it’s been a pleasure) Isa waves
“¿Cómo se llama?” the woman asks when they’re leaving
“Isa, ¿y usted?” (Isa, and you?)
“Judy. Un placer” she grins
Tumblr media
The TV has already passed to that late night teleshopping advertising stupid stuff with even more stupid people repeating again and again the same lame catchy phrases. But there’s silence at this hour, Elvi is sleeping soundly and now Isabel can rest on the sofa, eyes fixed on the stupid people on TV and her longing for Javier.
She took the laundry out of the dryer today. Mixed in all the clothes an old “University of Texas” t-shirt that Javi rarely wears around the house and that she has stolen as pajamas. Without even realizing it, she smelled the fabric only sensing the sweet scent of the softener she uses so she had rushed to the bathroom and sprinkled the t-shirt with Javi’s cologne. And now hugs herself silently praying that tonight will be the night he calls.
The TV volume is set to the minimum and when the strong ringing sound surrounds the house Isa thinks is coming from it until she realizes that is coming from the kitchen. She runs, stepping on Elvi’s toys and bumping her knee over the sofa. Limping she runs and picks up the phone
“Hello?” her voice is shaky
“Isa is me” Javi says on the other line
“Javi, thank God, where were you? You told me you will call when you’d arrive and it’s been three days and I...” she babbles
“I’m fine, I’m sorry...it’s been a little bit crazy” he sounds tired and he’s speaking softly as if he cannot raise his voice
“Are you okay? Are you in danger?” Isa sniffs, the tears rolling down and she leans on the cold tile wall of the kitchen
“No, it’s just we have to go to different places, meet a bunch of people. I didn’t have the time. I’m sorry Isa. Elvi’s sleeping I guess?”
“Yes, but she will be really happy to know that you called”
“I’ll try to call earlier tomorrow”
“Yes...please, she’s being a bit difficult lately”
“Why?” Isa can hear how the bed creaks on his end and his deep grunt
“I guess it’s the end of summer, you’re not here, my mum...”
He huffs
“Elvi told her we didn’t know where you where and you can imagine”
“She hates me even more”
“Don’t worry about her. Tell me about the job” Isa sits on the ground holding the phone on her shoulder
“Isa...I rather listen to you”
“I haven’t done much. Nothing interesting”
“It doesn’t matter” he answers
And thus she begins telling every tiny detail, Javi was silent on the other side and when she asks if he’s listening he just hums.
“Anyway...I guess that’s all. And I hope you’re not mad but your old university t-shirt has a new hole in it which somehow makes it even more comfortable”
“You’re wearing it now?”
“Yes...I miss you so it’s just like having your arms around me”
“I miss you too, Isa. I only have this old dude on the medallion and the picture I keep on my wallet to remind me of you...not that I need anything to remember you”
“That old dude...” she laughs “he’s a saint and I think he’s doing a good job for the moment”
“Really?” Isa smiles widely when she hears his deep chuckle on the other side
“You’ve said I miss you for the first time, I will say it’s even a miracle”
“What? I’ve told that plenty of times” he says a little bit offended “ but we’ve never been parted that much since we’re together”
“You don’t say you love me that much either...” Isa adds
“That’s not true” he says firmly
“Yes it is, I’m not mad, you express it in other ways. I’ve accepted that when I marry you”
“I’m sure I say it many times...”
“You can say it now...” she whispers
“I love you, Isa, and I miss you” he mutters
“See? Saint Jude is working its magic” Isa laughs. Her heart is full and she feels like an enormous weight has been lifted. He loves me, he’ll be back
“So I’m not a lost cause anymore?” Javi replies with an amused tone
“We’ll see when you get here”
“And you won’t say it back?”
“What?”
“That you love me and miss me”
“Ay, Javier” she sighs “I sleep every night waiting for you with the lights on, praying that you will get back to me soon, I sleep with your t-shirt and even if I don’t believe in it really, I keep praying and praying that you will be back to our bed, that I will turn and you’ll be there, so yeah, I miss you and I love you. Te amo”
“Yo también te amo”
“Good night, mi amor”
“Good night”

Everybody say happy birthday to Maryse Lightwood!
Our mama Lightwood is 52, she’s born on the 30th of October of 1968 in Idris.
Tumblr media
In the movie adaptation of City of Bones, sadly, there was no Maryse... but she was portrayed by Nicola Correia Damude in the tv series.
Tumblr media
what do you need to know about her?
her maiden name is Trueblood
she has a brother, Max Trueblood, who left the Clave to marry a Mundane. her son Max was named after him
she was taught how to cook instead of going out to hunt demons with the rest of her family because her generation was still one of those where women weren’t trained. only later she was sent to the Shadowhunter Academy
she was a very short and slim kid but she really liked the broadsword, something that was pretty incompatible, but in her early teens she grew a lot so much so that she managed to train and use that weapon
she was Robert Lightwood’s wife
she is Alec, Isabelle and Max’s mother, she also adopted Jace. in fact, Jace’s name comes from her shortening his long name
she is Max and Rafe Lightwood-Bane’s grandmother
she used to sing a French lullaby to her children, even though she sang it to Jace only when he was asleep
she was part of the Circle, one of the most cruel member, but the right acquaintances and the fact that Alec was already born made her sentence way softer
she was the head of the NY Institute, she was exiled there after the failed Uprising
she wasn’t really accepting of her son’s sexuality, even though she later understood and became a loving grandma
her marriage wasn’t a stable one, as a matter of fact Robert cheated on her and was tempted to leave her several times before divorcing. she told this secret to Isabelle only, teaching her that she had to be a strong and independent woman
her name is a traditional Shadowhunter one, pronounced “May-rise”
