Another of the poems from my 2016 poetry chapbook, available as a paperback from Amazon. I was reminded of it, again, after I added to this post about the similar mindset between belief in Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria and the belief that vaccines cause autism.

From a Documentary on Science*

“It is miraculous,” the surgeon says, “To place electrodes deep within the brain, And see these patients, trembling in their chairs, Each stand and walk, like normal people do, And so regain their human dignity.”

The television host across from him Nods placidly, with just the slightest smile. The lighting, and the set, and cutaways, All make it seem impossible to doubt His words or deeds or hopes for all mankind.

But, still –

Perhaps it was like Santa Claus, you know, A pretty fable Mother told to me, To soften life’s hard edges for my sake, When she had said that dignity was mine – For me, alone, to squander or to keep.

But now I’ve learned the gray and dreary truth: Whatever makes me worthy of esteem Is held completely in the public trust Revocable without recourse or right, When strangers, in disgust, avert their eyes.

*It was a a three- or four-parter from the BBC, hosted by Brian Cox, which is now no longer archived on their site (Not that I'd be comfortable linking to the BBC, these days, anyway). And I watched it through pirated episodes on YouTube. This particular episode was focused on controversies in science, and the ethics of animal experimentation.

In this interview, the surgeon was defending the ethics of doing brain experiments on chimps (I think?) because it led to the ability to do this neurosurgery on his young patient, and bestow on him the dignity of being able to go to school, and not have to be cared for by nurses, etc..

And it made me so angry that I had to do several laps around the house in my wheelchair (and a few good bellows of rage) before I could calm down. Because that kid could have gone to school if the school had given him accommodations, and being cared for by nurses wouldn't have been degrading if they treated him with respect. No surgery necessary.

But this physician was acting like some kind of saint because he'd figured out how he could bestow the gift of dignity.

I altered his dialog in the first verse only enough to make it fit iambic pentameter, which wasn't much.

I've always known... I'll die alone but that doesn't mean I wanted you to die alone. Last time you died I couldn't touch you, couldn't hold you close, couldn't give you my strength as yours ebbed slowly away.

I stole you from death because you already spent too many years alone - you should not be alone in death.

They say when we die our life flashes before our eyes, and when I met my own death it was proven true. I saw my life before - all the years we spent together. From a brash young adventurer clothed in gold, to a wiser, more experienced leader clothed in red - you took that journey with me.

And then I saw past my end all the way to yours and all I could whisper was "Oh my" because this time it will be different. I will make sure it's different.

This time... you won't die alone.

This time... I won't let you

This time... we will be together

This time... I will take your hand and hold you close

This time... I will get it right

If I had a nickel for every time Keith David voiced a top hat wearing old-school smooth jazz gentleman who sings a catchy earworm of a song (that stands out from a line of other bangers from the same animated musical production) about him dealing with the devil, cards, souls, and people's flaws while boosting their morale up somehow as he plays his own power down to earn someone's trust and consent and later got screwed over by something green that turned their deals against them, *breathes in* I'll have two nickels...

Which isn't much, but it's weird that it happened twice.

His human version in my artstyle was based on Vivzie's own human Husk doodle design from the time of the pilot. Hope ya'll liked this one much better. That practice made such a difference, no? 😘 -Bubbly💙

love and light to everyone but if i see one more post that’s like “the point of asoiaf is that feudalism is BAD” i’m going to rip out my hair and start eating dirt and worms. like yes, it is bad. yes, monarchies are bad. yes so true it’s annoying when people ignore all of that and focus on who they think deserves the throne more. but that’s not the point—that is the premise? it’s the beginning of the exploration and deconstruction. functionally this system is rigid (specifically in terms of gender and class) and horrifically violent: so what it’s really like to live in it? to try to be a hero, a knight, to be a lady in a world where your body belongs to your family, your lord, your order? is it possible to be a good person in a hierarchal world like this, with such vast power imbalances woven throughout it and every relationship and interaction that you have informed by that? how do you navigate that imbalance in order to have meaningful relationships—can you every truly do it? and who decides what is good? how do you know if it’s truly right or it just felt right because it’s what you wanted to do? what about the people who have no name, no family, no order: what happens to them? don’t they matter? what if in a lifetime of looking the other way or actively causing others harm, you do a few things—maybe one thing—that’s objectively good: does it mean anything? does it matter, even if no one ever knows? what if the best thing you ever did broke every vow you made, every law that governs your society? how do you live with that dissonance?

what’s it like to be a ruler, to be a king or queen—is it possible to be a good one in such an unequal system? to wield power justly? who decides what is just? who decides who should rule? at which point does the amount of power someone can have cross the line into too much? is it when you stop trying to figure out how to use it correctly and worry only about how to keep it? if holding onto it costs you everything, your family and all your relationships, is it still worth it? what if having that much power available is necessary to the survival of your people, maybe even your world, but when it’s misused the carnage left behind is beyond articulation—is it still worth it? are the lives it saves worth the lives it took? how do you measure that? who carries the weight of that choice and how? how do you live with it? how do you go on living in a world that can be harsh and cruel and unfair, a world where your good intentions and your personhood seem to matter very little in the face of someone else’s greed or when compared to the yoke of your duty? and the questions never stop and the answers when and if they come are rarely easy, but the point is that you keep asking and keep trying because that’s what it means to be alive lol

Kabuto is such an evil dork. Ninja info cards should've been a staple of his character. I want him literally being one of the biggest threats in the show and still carefully etching his all of his absurdly vast knowledge into dorky little holographic trading cards. Obito asks him for literally anything and Kabuto reaches into his dorky wizard robe sleeves, pulls out a deck of cards, shuffles them dramatically, and tells Obito to pick a card. And Obito is torn between finding it hilarious and finding it infuriating.

honestly just want a modern comedy AU where the juniors get hardcore into the same masked metal band but whenever they try to schedule going to a concert together, LSZ always has something come up on the same dates as the concerts. eventually, he just tells his friends to go without him and since JL has money, he’s like “let’s go VIP so we can meet the band!”

and when they finally go backstage to meet them, guess who’s a member of the band? 🙃
