On This Day (3/30): HORSE the Band, Graf Orlock, Drip-Fed, Insvrgence
3/30/2017; Sidewinder, Austin, TX
youtube
I waited a very long time to finally see HORSE the Band live and it was worth every bit of it. I’ve probably been listening to these guys since I was 14 and they were just so much fun. The openers were all hardcore and grindcore bands, which was sort of odd but sort of appropriate. I’m not a big grindcore guy, so Graf Orlock bored me to tears, but Insvrgence and Drip-Fed were cool. But, HORSE. Man. There will never be another band like these guys. They are so creative, weird, funny, and brilliant.

An interview with: Skyburial
Could you introduce yourselves to the readers?
Hello! We are Nate (vocals) and Shawn (Drums). Jobe (Guitar) Grayson (Guitar) Zeke (Bass) are all asleep as we are driving to Albuquerque for our first date for the My Home/Your Hell Tour.
How did Skyburial come to be?
I (Shawn), had been in bands previously with the original vocalist Cody and original bassist Shane. We wanted to work on a heavier project together. I had known Ricky the original guitarist for a number of years but we’d never played together. So we threw the idea his way and got to work. Nate has been my best friend for 15 years and was good friends with Cody so at a lot of our shows starting out Nate would get on stage and just do guest vocals on parts. So it just seemed like a natural fit to add Nate to the band and run with two vocalists because of the natural chemistry they had that ended up really developing into a high energy live show.
You guys announced you are going on tour with Widowmaker this month you start the tour on the 7th, are you guys hitting any cities you haven’t played yet?
Yes! We are out on the My Home/Your Hell Tour with Widowmaker, Face Your Maker, Second Death and then Obliterate hops on after we’re back home. Very excited for this tour. We are hitting some new cities. We haven’t played Cupertino, CA, Portland, Washington or Idaho prior to this run. Which has been long overdue. So we are happy to finally have the opportunity.
Other than this tour with Widowmaker, what else do you guys have up your sleeve for 2018?
We have a lot coming this year. New music. We are playing a new song on this current Widowmaker tour. We plan to release a new CD in the fall and tour that heavily. There will be a couple of singles/music videos released before then. We have a Midwest/East Coast tour coming up in May with Portals and Neck Of The Woods. Very excited to finally have some dates out in the East Coast. We also have a June tour with our best friends in Filth along with Insvrgence and I, Detest. Deadland and Loser will also be on dates of the tour as well. Where we will be starting in Denver and heading back down south across Texas and Mississippi.
“Faithless Eternal” has been out for a year, what is the EP about?
Nate: The EP has varying dynamics based off of who was writing the majority of the song. It has multiple topics mostly focusing on internalized emotion and the introspection led to personally my favorite songs on the album. Being Devoid and Spitting Image. Devoid is about the complete feeling of helplessness, loneliness and emptiness that I was feeling at the lowest point of my life. Cody Cartwright wrote the majority of our two part song When Night Comes and ...The Wolves Roam Free. He says “When Night Comes is about the shift in my mindset from Dead Hopes and the refusal to let life/people make me feel defeated. Wolves is about religion and it's tendency to cause people to be weak minded yet hateful. It's about my distaste for that lifestyle and rebellion against it. They tie together to lead into Faithless Eternal and how each person is the "god" of their own life.”
Spitting image is a reflection of how impactful some people’s words and actions can lead to negatively effect you on such a level that you feel yourself reflecting those similar traits towards others. Perpetuating the cycle of abuse.
youtube
When writing music what are some topics you like to cover?
Nate: Well going forward as the primary songwriter things are taking on a new path of sorts. Our new song scumsucker is about parasitic people and being fed up with their bullshit. In other new songs it will be songs focusing on my depression in a way to fight against it by letting it out instead of letting it dwell as I have in the past. Lyrically more anger, aggression and hate will fuel the songs as well as going deeper into my own personal struggles in hopes to help not only myself. But others who may be dealing with similar issues.
What are some tips you can give new bands trying to get into the writing process that are stuck, trying to get out of writer’s block?
Both: I think you can try to write through it. You can listen To other bands to try and find that creative spark but sometimes you just have to take a step back. Give yourself a minute. Take your focus onto something else for a day or two. Basically just try and remove that stress and pressure. Go do something you enjoy. It helps to come back to something feeling refreshed.
With the vast sea of great talent out in the world, what would you say is the most difficult part in staying relevant and really pushing through the threshold?
Both: Consistence and Persistence. By all means of making a band work. Making consistent music. Working through getting the opportunities for tours, financing for those tours along with managing our own lives at homes with work and family and kids. Member changes. It’s really about being able to not lose yourself through it all and persevere while holding everything together. It’s not an easy life by any means and we certainly aren’t as far into it yet as many other bands are yet... but the feeling and reward you get from doing it is absolutely worth it in a very unexplainable way.
I see you guys are on The Arkham Agency. How much does it help to be on a booking agent’s roster and what advice can you give bands trying to find a booking agent?
Yes! We’ve been working with Blaine for the last few tours. He has been great! And many of the other agents we have worked with on tours have been great as well.
The best advice we can honestly give a band looking for a booking agent is... do your research first. Don’t get overly excited to work with someone you don’t know anything about and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Secondly, show the booking agencies that you’re bringing hard work to the table. Go out. Do some tours either by yourselves or with a band you can set some dates up with and book it and build up your resume. Booking agencies, labels, anyone in the industry wants to work with bands that they can see are putting in the work for themselves. It shows them that they’re investment whether it be time or whatever is worth it to them.
Dream tour with Skyburial on the bill?
We couldn’t decide between all time or current day. So we’re going to make a couple of lists.
All time
Slipknot
Elysia
King 810
The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza
Kanye West
Current
Slipknot
Despised Icon
Fit For An Autopsy
Lorna Shore
Kanye West
Anything else you would like to tell the readers before we go?
Thank you everyone for all of the continued support. Come check us out on one of our upcoming tours. And if we aren’t coming to your city now, don’t worry. We will be touring around the album later this year and will be hitting as much of North America as possible.
