Lol, could you share more takes on that "pun pun" manga? I remember like two years ago on youtube all the marketeer "youtubers" started pushing it as some piece of art, never checked it out but it allwasy gave of bad vibes to me lol
Wrote about it here. There's definitely a lot of hype, but I think it's pretty organic. I started hearing about Punpun through word of mouth a couple of years before the official translations were published by Viz. I address the "bad vibes" question in my brief piece. I think it has to do with Asano's intense manipulation of manga's customary confusion of cuteness and eros, which he further embeds in a densely realist representational frame, so that the whole thing is like a hyperreal and deeply unwholesome nightmare, though one largely bereft of incident save the few shocking moments everyone knows about. (An analysis of Zoomer sex negativism that doesn't account for that generation's mangafied erotic bildung is surely incomplete.)
I'm going to answer a few other "asks" in a scattershot manner under this one to clear the archive:
—I've never seen Porco Rosso (I'm actually sort of ambivalent about Miyazaki, heretical as it seems—isn't it just a little bit too sweet and kind and gentle? and doesn't this imply the kind of hidden perversions you mention, anon?—but I do need to watch more of his work)
—I agree that "knowledge of tradition" has decayed into TVTropification and "Easter eggs" and the like, but the problem is not the fact of allusions or archetypes—these are unavoidable—it's the shallowness of the symbols now in use and their mechanical application and combination
—I've never heard of "Common Filth" nor did I end up writing about Benedict Cryptofash beyond what I've said here (the problem in getting inspired is that I don't care about Marxism, and also he seems like an unpleasant character)

Dead Dead Demon's Dededededestruction - Volume 1
Dead Dead Demon’s Dededededestruction – Volume 1
Dead Dead Demon’s Dededededestruction opens with a kooky children’s comic, clearly reminiscent of Doraemon. A child protagonist has a problem, their mushroom-shaped friend has just the invention to solve it, and trouble ensues. The camera then pulls back to reveal this text as an in-universe comic, one of countless objects strewn across a teenage girl’s messy, cluttered bedroom. It’s a fair…

I know shoujolemon already did a great translation of chapters 15-20 here, but since we already started working on chapter 15 before she posted, we thought we might as well finish it. It's been quite the emotional roller coaster, and I hope you like it! and seriously I need someone to discuss the ending with because wtffff
