The Ionians and Aeolians immediately after the Persian conquest of Lydia sent representatives to Cyrus at Sardis, to try to obtain from him the same terms as they had had under Croesus, their former master. Cyrus replied to their request by the story of the fluteplayer who saw some fish in the sea and played his flute to them in the hope that they would come ashore. When they refused to do so, he took a net, netted a large catch, and hauled them in. Seeing the fish jumping around, he said to them: 'It's too late to dance now: you might have danced to my music- but you would not.' The point of the story was, that when Cyrus had sent to the Ionians to ask them to revolt from Croesus, they had been unwilling to do so, though they were ready enough to offer their allegiance now that everything was settled in his favour. Cyrus was angry with them - and hence his reply. - Herodotus

"Claude
Felvehetem ezt a ruhát? - kérdezi Jeannie, és pördül egyet a sarka körül. A ruhája lebben és az ablakon beszűrődő sűrű sárga fény mézes csíkokat húz a falra. A kis piros cipő, amibe a kötött zoknis lábát beleszuszakolta halkat sikkant a padlón.
- mondja a kislánynak, aki elmerülten forog a ragyogó citromszín ruhában, a lába pici piros örvényekkel szórja tele a padlót.
Beleszagol a levegőbe - Turmil!
Cathlin gyorsan a levesbe dobálja őket.
Harsog a hangja, kacag, a kacagásától a ház sarkai reszketni kezdenek. Meghallja a csörrenést, lehalkítja a hangját.
Tűz fűti, folytatja, a szavaiban ágyúk, csatamének, puskaropogás.

A Handful of Hope...
In his quarters - a snarl drawing back his lips - Rocket Raccoon browsed the Terran Internet. The worthless flarkin' bald-bodies may have been primitive when it came to just about everything--but flark their stories, art, and music were somethin' else. Even now, he sifted through some random site - Tumble-something-or-another - his eyes glimmering as he soaked up artwork and stories; art and stories with him and Star-Munch; with him and some humie named Jolie, a story where Drax acted as a Dad to him, and on, and on...
Around the others, he'd made sure to sneer and scoff and snarl and insult it all - that ain't me, that's not how things work, this is all flarkin' stupid - but when he was alone... secretly, he longed for the next post, whether it was a story or piece of art. The stories and art of him and Lylla made him laugh, made him cry, made his heart flarkin' ache--and the latest bit of art by hibata (what kinda dumbass name was that?) - the one where Petra Quill was holdin' him, sorta buried in her hair - filled him with longing. The bit of black and white art where he was listenin' to Pete's Walkman and dancin' with Lylla's ghost hit especially hard, and he cried silently for maybe five minutes or more.
The stories written by that whitedragoncoranth guy, however, were just plain weird! That story where he had a servant lookin' after him and takin' care of him, where the humie had adopted Cosmo, and then Lylla had been brought back to life--then the humie had become the newest flarkin' High Evolutionary?! That one was way out there, but Rocket loved that one, too, secretly wished he could be there, cuddled up with his princess and Mama Cosmo. The newest stuff this humie wrote was even weirder. Stories where he was cared for by a powerful humie and his pet giant gold liza-drag-whatever? That one where he'd become a Dragon-Rac - a hybrid? Now there was this other one where - somehow - the powerful humie and his dragon had rescued Lylla from the High Evolutionary, and then the dragon had brought her back to life with a song!
That one was way, way out there, and had brought him to tears when he'd read it. Rocket sniffled, wiped his tear-filled eyes. "... gotta stop doing this..." With a harsh sigh, the little raccoon spun away from his holopad, then laid his head in his paws, breath hitching in a sob. "'s not real, none of it's real. Damn it, stop pinin' for somethin' you can never have, d'ast it! It's not..." Suddenly, Rocket inhaled a breath, his fur briefly fluffing up and standing on end as the room seemed to grow warmer. In front of him, the air shimmered... and then, his little jaw dropped open as reality gently cracked in light of cyan-blue.
Rocket gasped as the crack widened, a little, then further and further. "... it ---king, R-cket?" came a humie's voice from the other side. Jaw dropping open, Rocket gasped as someone answered with his own voice! "Loo---- good, Pa--, I th--k we're n--rly there! --- good -ver --ere, Mama? Fl--- this -----ference!" Rocket snuffled back a sob, now, as a gentle female baritone answered--a voice he swore he heard in his head! ~Tu--ing, tuning... adj--ti-g -arp m-tri--... Oh, c-me on -ou ruth firok, work!~ With frustration, the humie responded. "We--- t- f-cking close to th-- rip, da-- it! -ut this is the -nly pl--- wh-re th- -eil --tween --iverses -s thin --ough f-r th-s to w-rk. Th-t ----ains th- ----rference. L-t me try someth---..." By now, the crack in reality had widened enough to become a door, but suddenly it began to destabilize!
"No-no-no!" Rocket's breath hitched as he heard his own voice again, from the other side. "Back th-t one off - bit, lemme tr- som-th--- GOT IT!" The bizarre reality door suddenly stabilized, and Rocket goggled at what he saw. The other side of the doorway exited to a colossal laboratory, but inside it--here, Rocket's breath froze in his throat! Dark brown hair done up in a peculiar braid framed a weathered face; hazel eyes, nose and lips drawn up in a curious little smile. A hand attached to a pink-skinned arm, dusted with a light coating of hair slowly drew away from a pattern of holographic glyphs towards his body, which was clothed in some kind of amazing teal robe covered with runic designs; beneath that was some kind of golden-bronze armour.
The powerful, not-quite humie from the stories Rocket had just been reading! Now Rocket squeaked - withdrew from his belt a small stunner that he held with shaking paw - because next to him... The creature measured about forty meters from snout tip to tail tip, with a wingspan that matched the length of her body. Thick and leathery golden hide, devoid of scales or hair, covered her body. The membranes of her gigantic wings were the exact same golden colour as her body but veined with streaks of dark golden bronze. Her large three-meter head looked smooth and streamlined; she had a sleek snout and up-thrust, mobile ears. A line of bronze-coloured spines ran from the base of the dragonesses’ skull to the base of her tail. These spines arched up-and-back in a slight curve, and were small at the base of her skull, but became bigger toward the middle of her back, before becoming smaller, and finally smoothing into a slight ridge that ran all the way to her tail spade.
The dragoness, the mama dragon who'd looked after him in those stories... She looked at Rocket-on-the-Milano, utterly stricken, then sniffled sadly, trilled and called to him--and Rocket looked at the weapon in his paw. What the flark am I doin', this... this is Mama in the stories he thought, horrified, then he made the weapon safe and nearly tossed it away! In despair he sobbed and tried to call back to Mama... and his heart lightened as the gentle dragon smiled at him in understanding and forgiveness, cooed and purred gently to him.
The dragoness lifted her wing... and Canon Rocket sank to the floor in tears again, for beneath her raised wing was Dovah Rocket, and next to him... Now Rocket truly cried, sobbed, wept, because he saw his beloved Lylla, but she was larger, with golden-bronze fur, a huge pair of white-feathered wings growing from her back. Dovah Lylla looked to her beloved; he smiled and nodded, and she moved towards the portal. Canon Rocket opened his mouth to speak to Lylla - there was so much he wanted to say to her - but soon, he closed his mouth as she started to sing with all the power of her thu'um...
That song... Rocket stood, frozen, body shaking, bawling like a baby as his - their - beloved Lylla sang with the voice of an angel; the ship - hell, it was as if the whole flarkin' universe - became brighter, yet a li'l sadder at the same time. As the song ended, Dovah Lylla gently put a paw to one of her wings, plucked from it a huge primary feather, then passed it through the reality door to Canon-Rocket, who took it with shaking paw, with utter reverence. Lylla was alive, somewhere out there--he had flarkin' PROOF, PROOF IN HIS PAWS! As Rocket held the feather to his chest, over his heart... Dovah Lylla's expression grew sad, as did the expressions of David and Ieesha. The dragoness buried her head into David's robes, Dovah Rocket and Lylla held each other gently, nuzzled, cried too. Because the portal, gradually, was closing...
Before the doorway - now once again a reality-crack - sealed forever, Canon Rocket, clutching Lylla's Feather, heard his beloved Otter's voice one last time. “Impossible connections made possible, my beloved raccoon!” she cried, joyously. “Reach through and grab a handful of hope!” Later, Rocket would go to his work bench and construct a display case for the feather so flarkin' indestructible, it would survive the end of the universe - and he would modify all his clothing such that there was a thickly armoured section with an internal pocket so he could carry the feather in its case with him, against his heart, no matter where he went - but for now... Rocket Raccoon - Canon Rocket Raccoon - alone in his quarters aboard the Milano, held tightly to Lylla's Feather as he laughed and cried.

God doesn't allow us to struggle just so that we can struggle. In our struggle, our faith deepens as we actively see the character, the face, and the hand of God actively and personally. In our struggle, we are met with the realizations that God is neither shallow or far away, but that He is awe-inpiring, very present, and deeply committed to us.
Awe-inspiring
[aw-uhn-spigh-uhr-ing]
(adj.) Arousing awe through being impressive, formidable, or magnificent.
Formidable
[for-mi-duh-ble]
(adj.) Inspiring fear or respect through being impressively large, powerful, intense, or capable.
This is literally God. Whatever it is that you may be dealing with, endure it by putting your faith in God. You're in good hands, bro. He's got you covered, sis.

"Al poner la mano en el tirador de la puerta, Winston reparó en que había dejado el diario abierto sobre la mesa, con «Abajo el Hermano Mayor» escrito en letra tan grande que casi era legible desde el otro lado de la habitación."
The two things I'm not understanding immediately are 1: Al poner la mano... de la puerta and 2: reparó en que había
So looking up some words and breaking this down:
(Al poner la mano en el tirador de la puerta) Adverbial clause -- Putting his hand on the doorknob,
(Winston reparó) Main verb -- Winston realized
(en que había dejado el diario abierto sobre la mesa) Main predicate -- that he had left the journal open on the table
(con «Abajo el Hermano Mayor» escrito) Adverbial -- with "Down with Big Brother" written
Adverbial -- in writing so big that it was almost legible from the other side of the room.
Some lessons:
Al [infinitive] ~ "when [verb]ing"
Reparar en que ~ realize that
Dejar algo [adj] = leave something [adj]
con "..." escrito = with "..." written
casi can come between que and verb
Almost false friend of letra, since it's being used as singular
Questions:
Use of tenses -- reparó is preterite, but había and era are imperfect. Era makes sense, but había is a bit weird to me. I guess because it's weird to me to use imperfect había for the perfect construction though maybe that's more common?

🔹 The weather is rather cold today. (Thời tiết hôm nay khá lạnh.) 🔹 She speaks rather fluently.
🔹 It was rather a surprise to see him. (Gặp anh ấy là một sự bất ngờ khá lớn.) 🔹 She is rather a genius.
👉 Cấu trúc "Rather than" dùng để so sánh, thể hiện sự ưu tiên hoặc lựa chọn.
🔹 I prefer coffee rather than tea. (Tôi thích cà phê hơn trà.) 🔹 He walked rather than took a taxi. (Anh ấy đi bộ thay vì bắt taxi.) 🔹 Rather than waiting, let's go now. (Thay vì chờ đợi, hãy đi ngay.)
💡 Lưu ý: Nếu đi với động từ nguyên mẫu, ta bỏ "to" (rather than wait ❌ rather than to wait).
4️⃣ Would rather + (bare infinitive) → Diễn tả sự lựa chọn, mong muốn
👉 Khi đi với "would", "rather" mang nghĩa "muốn, thích hơn" và đi với động từ nguyên mẫu không "to".
🔹 I would rather stay home than go out. 🔹 She would rather not talk about it.
Phủ định: Would rather not + V (I would rather not eat spicy food.)
Không dùng "to" trước động từ nguyên mẫu (❌ would rather to stay).
5️⃣ Would rather + S + V (quá khứ đơn) → Mong muốn ai đó làm gì (Câu giả định)
👉 Khi chủ ngữ thứ hai khác chủ ngữ đầu tiên, ta dùng mệnh đề với động từ chia ở quá khứ đơn để diễn tả mong muốn.
🔹 I would rather you stayed at home. (Tôi muốn bạn ở nhà hơn.) 🔹 She would rather he didn't call her anymore. (Cô ấy muốn anh ta đừng gọi cô ấy nữa.)
💡 Lưu ý: Dù mang ý nghĩa hiện tại hoặc tương lai, động từ vẫn chia ở quá khứ đơn (giả định).
💡 Tóm lại:
✅ Rather + Adj/Adv → Nhấn mạnh mức độ (rather cold, rather fluently). ✅ Rather + a/an + Noun → Nhấn mạnh sự bất ngờ (rather a surprise). ✅ Rather than + (Noun / V-ing / V-bare) → So sánh, lựa chọn (rather than wait). ✅ Would rather + V-bare → Diễn tả sự lựa chọn, mong muốn (would rather stay). ✅ Would rather + S + V (quá khứ đơn) → Mong muốn ai đó làm gì (would rather you stayed).
👉 Bạn muốn dùng "rather" trong câu nào? 😊

➝ Is Killing the Same as Murder?.
Killing isn’t necessarily immoral. We can kill in self-defense if it comes to that. Murder is a form of killing, but it is immoral, as there is no right to do so. The Sacred Feminine principle of nonaggression and nonviolence has to be violated, a violation of rights, a violation of Natural Law, in order for self-defense to be enacted. Murder is initiation of violence by taking another’s life that caused no harm to anyone, did no aggression or violence towards another being. Killing is a causal response (self-defense of the Sacred Masculine) to an effect and violation brought upon you against your will (violation of Sacred Feminine nonaggression and nonviolence).
Kill = to end a life.
Interestingly, tue, tuer in French which means to kill, comes from Latin tutor: I guard, protect, defend
It would seem kill/tue in French derives from guard/protect/defend-ing. We can infer that killing is only killing when it is used to guard, protect or defend oneself, whereas murder is not. This is the causal factor. Initiation of violence vs. defense against an aggressor.
Kill
Murder
Murder = “unlawful killing”
from PIE *mrtro-, from root *mer- “to die” (see mortal (adj.)). The spelling with -d- probably reflects influence of Anglo-French murdre, from Old French mordre, from Medieval Latin murdrum, from the Germanic root.
In which law is it unlawful? Natural Law! There is such a thing as lawful killing in Natural Law. When the Sacred Feminine is disregarded, nonviolence and nonaggression are violated and someone violates another to the point where they try to end their life, the self-defense of the Sacred Masculine is allowed to use force to end that unlawful violence and violation of rights, with whatever force necessary to end that violence.
Further validation comes from the Old Testament 10 Commandments. The translation of “Thou shalt not kill” is intentionally false, as it is really “thou shalt not murder.”
Even in the Strong’s Concordance they do not want you to understand this truth fully,
Exo 20:13 Thou shalt not(H3808) kill.(H7523)
raw-tsakh’ (H7523) (R-Tz-H)
A primitive root; properly to dash in pieces, that is, kill (a human being), especially to murder: – put to death, kill, (man-) slay (-er), murder (-er).
But in a dictionary that uses etymology, we can see the difference between kill and murder yet again.
To murder (to deliberately kill).
Murder: the crime of deliberately killing.
That is the real meaning of the Hebrew word R-Tz-H

@plentyghosts as;lrghjwriptgu SUCH good food
@pippin-katz, I'm confused by your descriptions of scared vs frightened—I think they do actually mean the same thing? Per Meriam-Webster (shout-out to their A+++++ daily games), they're synonyms. M-W definitions, bolding mine:
Scared (adj): thrown into or being in a state of fear, fright, or panic
Frightened (adj): feeling fear : made to feel afraid
I guess I tend to think of "gasp[ing] at a disturbing image or a sudden noise" as an action, like Wynn's suggestion of "startled" (verb form) or flinched etc, rather than a feeling, like scared or frightened. Thoughts?
Now, on a completely different note:
"Word of God" ≠ canon, and that is important and good actually!!!!
Just going to throw in something I wrote in (checks date) seven months ago (incredible... god bless the passage of time lol):
I want to push back against the idea that readers/viewers/etc must incorporate input—i.e. statements from interviews, commentary, etc—from creators, actors, etc that is not directly part of the canon in their readings of the text (or show, in this case). Accepting “Word of God” is a perfectly valid lens to interpret/read media, but it is NOT universally accepted (nor, I think, should it be). See also: Death of the Author.
Regardless of whether we get more of this version of DBDA, George Rexstrew is NOT the final arbiter for how we interpret or understand Edwin Payne of Dead Boy Detectives (Netflix, 2024). Same for Jayden Revri-Charles, or Steve Yockey-anything, or Beth Schwartz-anything... etc.
The show is out! It is in our hands now! And it is equally okay to take actors'/directors'/writers' takes as canon as it is to fully ignore/disagree with them!
... Kinda thrilling to have all that power, don't you think?
Most people assume that nothing much scares Edwin. He spent seven decades in hell. What, up here on earth, could possibly compare, after that? Turns out, quite a lot. In fact, Edwin scares incredibly easy. Spiders. The sound of a child's laughter. Old porcelain dolls. The dark. And then there's the myriad of creatures and vengeful spirits they face on cases. He is scared very often. He has simply become skilled at operating as usual, even in the depths of terror. Even when every non-existent nerve is screaming at him to hide. Even when his vision is going fuzzy at the edges, his ears ringing. Hell didn't make him less easily frightened, but it did give him the ability to carry on when he is.
#death of the author#word of god#meta#why am I like this you may ask?#well#i'm jewish that's why#i am an active part of a legacy that includes people telling G-d that G-d is wrong#and G-d eventually agreeing with the ppl

Quote
Symmathesy (n) is an entity of transcontextual mutual learning. Other forms: Symmathesize (v), symmathetic (adj) Symmathesy as a starting place stretches the inquiry into the contexts and detours from the pull of direct correctives. The national health system, for example, may be studied as an institution that needs corrective policies and measures. Still, when the health system is approached as a ‘system learning to be in its world,’ it becomes immediately apparent that the systems of economy, politics, family, education, history, technology, agriculture, and the ecological world are all wound into and combining in the health of a society. The symmathesy offers us another approach that naturally asks for a response of another order. What if the changes to the health system are only possible through changes to education of family habits around food and the shifting of economic and agricultural traditions? In working with living systems, the solution is rarely direct. Attention to this “around-ing” shifts the position from which a response is configuring. If I see a crooked tree, I might be tempted to straighten its branches with string or cut them off, whereas if I see the way that tree is “learning” to be in its world, I will tend to the con‐ texts of that ecological learning. My approach is altered wholly. With a sym‐ mathetic approach, I am not a mechanic. I am an artist; I am listening to all of the instruments in the band, I am in wide-angle receiving mode — taking in the peripheries, the tones, the nuance, responding from another cognition of the situation. As organisms, trees, bacteria, human beings, societies, and forests are always learning, every second is in ecological movement. It follows that the responsiveness to this movement in mutual learning is an attending, not a management or control. This tending is humble and, in every instance, uniquely detailed. As such, these responses generate relationships that generate more relationships. Like a meadow, continuing to be a meadow while changing all the time.
