Louis' choices as an employer continue to disappoint me. In a crew of over 40 only one is a person of colour. Only a few women.

It's clear evidence of systematic discrimination.
#The framing of this anon drives me up the wall#there's something so individualistic about responding to evidence of systematic discrimination#with your personal disappointment#individualistic and incurious

my ★★★★ review of the phenomenon on letterboxd
alien: 👁️👁️ zimbabwean schoolchildren: damn bitch we see them! loved this. ive always avoided ufo documentaries despite my belief in extraterrestrial life + alien visitation because ufo documentaries tend to be very… ancient aliens. a lot of conspiratorial thinking + bad research, often with a large helping of ahistorical + racist rhetoric. so i deeply appreciated how grounded in reality this was: the abundance of (actual) experts, eye witness reports + testimonies, photos and videos, etc. definitely reeling from those nuclear launch code accounts — i'll need to read up on that the docu is not focused on the "what if" boogeyman aliens/UFOs become in our (reverse) colonialist scifi-horror, but what UFOs exist as in our reality — another casualty of the american government's suppression of information, and investment in maintaining a geocentric, individualistic, and incurious society. which i think is a very accurate assessment of what importance "are aliens real?" has to us as we suffer a climate crisis/pandemic/late capitalist existence. we have these "so what?" reactions to the recent "aliens confirmed" clickbait-news because there is so much more we are enduring that has made us very aware that The Powers That Be lie to us ad nauseum. the tracing of the links these experiences share with nuclear weaponry and environmental issues was especially compelling… it is nice to think that there are technologically advanced little guys out there (in jumpsuits…they love to stunt in a little jumpsuit) who are at least passively concerned about us blowing each other up.

you. I'm scooting up closer to you. these are good study topics and more people should be working on 'em, even folks over in animal work like me. (and boy howdy, you want to talk about incurious assholes, I had low standards coming into working on animal models of neurodivergence and then I met the kinds of work that tends to come out of those fields. no thank you. It's truly amazing.)
"i think, on some level, this is because of a feeling of helplessness against those causes; we as providers feel like there’s nothing we can do about those larger systemic factors. either on an individual level or more broadly. and so it makes sense to go “okay, let’s focus on what we can change, and maybe it’s just a band-aid, but it’s better than nothing, right?” except it ignores how focusing on changing those behaviors without addressing the underlying causes can just add more stress without relief."
think you've hit the nail on the head here just exactly right. turning this paragraph around in my head like a nut I want to gnaw into. it's so solid and accurately directed.
this is a bit of a tangent, but i do think there is an element of learned helplessness when those systemic issues do come up, or perhaps lines drawn by the history of professions that keep people from trying to address these larger problems.
ding ding ding. like, it's not just that other professions exist whose job it is theoretically to do some of these things; it's also just that the actual problems are so often these massive systematic things, and doctors are a profoundly individualistic approach to medicine. That is not to say that we don't need individualistic approaches or doctors to help us; it's just that we also need epidemiologists and public health practitioners, and we need politicians to give enough of a shit to actually enable systemic changes to happen even when these are politically unpalatable (ah, UBI) or irritatingly expensive.
Even if you do have extensive time to offer people new or helpful ideas, you often don't have the resources to help a person find help through a system, if help even exists. Social workers are run off their feet as it is and criminally underfunded. No one person can fix a systemic failure, no matter how dedicated. So I think that doctors and nurses in particular tend towards a reflexive kind of burnt-out patient-blaming, because emphasizing the individual behaviors expected out of patients because "it's so easy" allows them to maintain a just-world belief while also insulating providers from grappling with topics that are already major causes of burnout.
as someone in clinical psych, it drives me up the wall that everyone accepts as a goddamn fact that stress is directly linked to weight gain, and yet every single study on diet and exercise just… ignores this as a confounding factor? it’s gotten to the point where if i open a study on weight and don’t see a stress measure anywhere i just close it again because EVERY TIME the behavior they’re saying causes weight gain is… surprise… a behavior people do when they’re stressed. so either the behavior itself is a spurious correlation to the already established causal relationship between stress and weight gain, OR the behavior does contribute some unique amount to variability in health outcomes, but we’re ignoring why people are doing that behavior. like ok maybe eating nothing but spaghetti-o’s causes you to gain weight. why is no one ringing alarm bells going WHY IS THIS PERSON SO STRESSED THEY CAN EAT NOTHING BUT SPAGHETTI-O’S? the intervention is always “eat less spaghetti-o’s” not “holy fuck what can we address in your life so you aren’t forced into the miserable existence of eating nothing but spaghetti-o’s.” setting aside “why is weight loss even your outcome variable,” if weight loss IS your target why the FUCK are you ignoring this piece! i am grabbing my fellow scientists by the shoulders and shaking them vigorously!!
HELL! FUCKING! YES!!!!!!!! You, YOU keep talking!

what’s weird to me about a lot of the anti SU videos is they seem so... completely incurious about WHY the show is more caring than other cartoons about its antagonists?
idk, i feel like... even if you don’t like it, you should be willing to engage with their ideas if you wanna be this savage critic.
like. i’ve yet to see one of them bring up the value of systemic vs individualistic storytelling, or about cause-effect chains vs consequences. it’s like they’re all just kinda. stuck. on this idea that stories Must be individualist and consequence-driven... or it’s just flatly bad. no alternatives allowed.
any story going for an exploration of cause-effect chain must just be a “failed attempt” at being consequence-driven. so we’re gonna “fix” it by telling it how to punish its antagonists or make them bleed to “earn” being alive, when that was never the point.
they’re just... bad at media analysis in general, but i wish they thought about this stuff? at least then, they would kinda understand why people like the show?? maybe????
like. if i ever heard one of them seriously talk about justice vs welfare perspectives without dismissing welfare out of hand, i’d be amazed.
if nothing else, i want one thing - i want one of them to consider, for five seconds, that SU being so unique in its storytelling means that maybe, just maybe, its uniqueness alone warrants its existence for the sake of media plurality, or maybe it’s just not that threatening considering most cartoons already follow the formula you’ve set out as ideal, where only the sad, misunderstood woobies who were never “that bad” get redeemed.

They've invested so much money into making people believe that they are only "safe" alone because they are One Truly Special Child to a frankly ludicrous degree. And I say ludicrous because it's turned so many functioning adults into manchildren (and womenchildren to a somewhat lesser degree). You have to be sociable but only for clout and networking, you can't just enjoy gatherings and hangouts, you have to post about every little thing of them, because you have to share it with the void. So many people obsessed with being known, but not in a truly social way, just be put on a virtual pedestal and being the object of parasocial relationships. All temporarely embarassed millionaires and stars, a conformism of "anticonformists". Other people are a threat to your individuality, to your pure self, or at best an instrument for your ends. This is part of why people are incurious and resentful of even other normal people's perspectives which don't fully fit with their ironclad viewpoints, and on platforms like social media which offer physical protection from actual confrontation flip out even worse than your average Karen.
This is the "cultural" side of hegemony. The social side of hegemony, the one which keeps alive and fosters the superstructure, is the fact that most of these people, in many of our countries, the gig economy and the atomization of workplaces has made labor not social and collective anymore, instead becoming increasingly individualistic. This fractures the working class, prevents the spontaneous formation of collective consciousness (even trade-union consciousness aiming for simple economic improvements) from arising, because when you think everybody's an enemy or competitor, and you are materially made such by how your job is structured, workers will never feel it is in their interests to unite against the bosses and owners.
And so the only escape that people can imagine is more individualism, more competition, finally being recognized as the One Truly Special Child. Becoming an idol, through influencing mostly, because you only need a phone and shit to react to. Even being a music star, an actor, or a YouTuber, by comparison, is such a labor-intensive thing that little by little it needs collective structures upon which to rest onto which might threaten the hegemonic culture that the person has internalized.
But we must break this illusion. It's imperative. We are getting poorer by the day, the planet is burning, and we are being made to hate and kill those worse off than us to cling even to this joke of a precarious subsistence gig-existence that capitalism has imposed on us. Statistically speaking, no random user on this site will be the One Truly Special Child. Yes, you too. You won't be the One Truly Special Child. You'll just be part of the pile of bodies left in the wake of the one the system choses to raise up to help cement the illusion. And that's not because other people are scary or want to hurt you because they are Other. That's exactly how they'd view you, with the lenses the capotalist system has forced on us.
So tearing down capitalism is a better survival measure than tearing each other apart for scraps until we're all dead, is it not? But that's only possible to do it with collective action. And that's the only action that values the individual, no matter the scary stories you may have heard about communism; because every singles individual's contribution is vital to the success of the movement.
It's like there's no better individualism than collectivism.
But this is it in practice. Get busy, find the org where you feel your input and effort would make the best impact and do the most help in tearing down capitalism and building a better world afterwards.
It'll be a blast.
I've always found the term "collectivism" to be very goofy when trying to fearmonger. those evil commies will force you to share and be social

I’ve appreciated your interest in and insight into whatever Taylor Swift and Matty Healy are doing, as well as your anon who made the connection to what The 1975 have been up to with videos. A majority of what I see online about them and about celebrity culture in general is so reactive and incurious that I really really value the rare exceptions who take the time to be thoughtful. Just, thanks. I probably would have left tumblr by now if it weren’t for you and a very few others. Happy to have broken my addiction to twitter and don’t miss it at all. Have a great week, Ralph.
Thanks anon - that's a really lovely thing to hear.
I do think the fact that it's so easy to reach an absurd number of people with our incurious reactions means that working to process as much we can before pushing our ideas out into the world is really advisable (particularly if we're operating in an environment where you're working together to make things normal).
But reacting is definitely part of being human. I have had a very strong 'THIS IS NOT POLITICS' response to the fandom discourse. And the question of meaningful political action - particularly the importance of building collective action solidarity rather than individualist responses - is incredibly important me. The idea that yelling at or about people on the internet helps build a better world infuriates me. But that wasn't that was all that was going on (I probably would always have felt it, but it might not always have been in caps).
I realised today, during a work conversation, what some of the personal stakes were for me and why this week of all weeks I have had little tolerance for the idea that this fan response was political. (The very short version is that last week, someone who I'd organised with 25 years ago had died under horrific circumstances that were directly connected to everything that we'd been trying to prevent. To know that someone you worked with to try and make things better, has died as a direct result of everything you were trying to fight - really underscores how little effect you've had compared to what needs to be done. And that means that I have felt the weight of what meaningful political action is and my capacity for generosity for things that are presented as political, but aren't actually about creating meaningful change is greatly depleted).
And I wouldn't have shared any of this without your anon - but I figure one thing I can do is walk through that process - and say it's not that we need to squelch our reactionary selves. It doesn't work and anyway our reactions often come from really important places. But that it's important not to centre our reactionary tendancies and treat our reactions as the truth.
**********
I am interested in what's going on, as well as the way people are talking about. What I'm thinking about most at the moment - is the relationship between what's happening right now and Midnights. When the break-up between her and Joe was announced - I did wonder if they'd been broken up for ages. Because Midnights did seem to describe their break up. But now it's also describing what's happening now - and that's far more interesting. To me it suggests she made art that pin pointed both how she felt about her life and the life that she wanted - in ways that she didn't fully understand.
It blows my mind how much the song Bejewelled seems to fit the night Taylor played at The 1975 Concert in January. If the song was first released in six months time I would totally believe that it was about that night. But of course it's not. Instead writing the song was part of Taylor processing her feelings and we've no idea if the enactment was conscious or unconscious, but it's fascinating either way.
As someone who is often frustrated at fandom discourse that is basically 'I can figure out what was going on in people's lives from their songs. I find the messiness of this (and what it suggests of the futility of certainty) fascinating.
#There is I think#an odd connection between my two very different points#that I hadn't realised when I started this post
