Revolutionaries : The Other Story of How India Won Its Freedom
In this book, the economist Sanjeev Sanyal explores the often-overlooked armed insurgencies led by Indian freedom fighters against British rule. Through the stories of these freedom fighters' struggles and sacrifices, Sanyal argues that their resistance was crucial in shaping India’s path to independence.
Revolutionaries: The Other Story of How India Won Its Freedom is a popular history book about the sacrifice of the Indian people during the Indian Revolution. The author, Sanjeev Sanyal, is currently a member of the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Economic Advisory Council while previously having worked at Deutsche Bank. The book aims to discuss the often ignored and mostly forgotten armed insurrections against the British Raj that took place alongside the much more celebrated non-violence movement. It recounts the triumphs and tribulations of revered martyrs like Bhagat Singh and Chandrashekhar Azad and the equally deserving, though lesser-known, freedom fighters like Rash Behari Bose and Sachindra Nath Sanyal. However, it is important to keep in mind that the author is not a trained historian but a politician.
This book attempts to change the perception of how the uprising against British rule was a scattered series of events fueled by misguided heroism, doomed to fail in their ultimate goals from the start. It was the doings of a well-planned network of revolutionary cells that stretched not just across the country, but across the world. Delving into the writings of figures like Aurobindo Ghosh and Sachindra Nath Sanyal, this book reveals a different perspective on their actions and goals. Rather than the "extremists" and "terrorists" portrayed by the British and their Indian loyalists, these works showcase mature and rational individuals driven by a deep love for their nation.
In the end, this book turns into a tragedy when readers are shown how only a handful of these revolutionaries lived to see an independent India (as opposed to the majority of the Gandhian faction). It was heartbreaking to see the plight of these revolutionaries and their families in newly independent India - neglected by the very nation they helped liberate. The soldiers of the Indian National Army (INA) or the naval ratings who took part in the naval mutiny of 1946 were not reinstated into independent India’s armed forces. In Pakistan, Jinnah allowed Muslim generals of the INA to join the army that fought wars with India, over Kashmir in 1947-1948. In a bitter twist of irony, the only battles the veterans of the Azad Hind Fauj (INA's Hindi name - literally "Free India Army") fought in after independence, were against an Azad Hind (Free India).
Like all of Sanjeev Sanyal’s books, Revolutionaries uses engaging language and prose, allowing readers to become acquainted with the general picture of Indian history if they are not familiar with this topic. Sanyal has also traveled to many of the places discussed in this book. From the site of the little curry restaurant Rash Behari Bose opened in Japan to the winding Calcutta gullies that witnessed Subhas Chandra Bose's daring escape to Germany, readers get a rich sense of place alongside the historical narrative.
In many of Sanyal's writings about Indian history, he has been attempting to write a revisionist history of India that has received mixed reviews because of its skewed narrative and obvious preference toward one side. His other books include The Ocean of Churn: How the Indian Ocean Shaped Human History (2016) and Land of the Seven Rivers: A Brief History of India's Geography (2012)

https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/taxis-security-escort-help-indian-students-escape-violence-hit-bangladesh-2024-07-19/
GUWAHATI, India, July 19 (Reuters) - A fleet of taxis, a security escort, and a harrowing six-hour journey brought Asif Hussain and about 80 other Indian students back home on Friday from Bangladesh, where violence has erupted between protesters and security forces.
At least 20 people have been killed in the clashes this week - most of them in the capital Dhaka - with police firing tear gas and rubber bullets to scatter protesters who also torched vehicles and establishments. The protesters oppose a system of quotas for government jobs.
Some mobile internet services were cut off on Thursday and telecom links remained widely disrupted on Friday.
For Hussain, who studies at a private medical college in Bangladesh's Manikganj district, about 50 km (30 miles)from Dhaka, being cut off from his family in India was especially "stressful".
"Our college was not affected by the violence but we heard there was trouble in the town (about 15 minutes away)," he told Reuters.
As news came in of students being killed in Dhaka, Hussain and about 80 others from his college hired private taxis to travel to the border that Bangladesh shares with India's eastern state of West Bengal, about 170 km away.
The Indian High Commission (embassy) in Bangladesh also provided the students with a security escort after they requested for it, Hussain said.
Leaving their college at 2.30 a.m., the group reached the border six hours later but crossed it only in the afternoon after clearing immigration.
For Hussain, the journey will continue for another day as he travels to his hometown, Dhubri, in Assam state.
"It has been very scary...I have (still) not been able to speak to many of my friends in Dhaka," he said.
Around 8,500 Indians are studying in Bangladesh - many of them pursuing medicine - India's foreign ministry says, and about 15,000 Indians live in the country.
Bangladesh's history is closely intertwined with India, which intervened on the side of Bengali nationalists in their 1971 war of independence against Pakistan.
India's Meghalaya state, which too shares a border with Bangladesh, is also helping to evacuate people, with officials saying more than 350 students from India, Nepal and Bhutan have entered through this route so far.
In an advisory, India urged its citizens in Bangladesh to minimise movement outside their residences. The foreign ministry on Friday said that all Indians in Bangladesh were safe.
Nepal similarly said it was "closely monitoring" the situation in Bangladesh, where around 3,000 of its citizens study and another 50 work with the United Nations and other international organisations.

India has urged its citizens travelling to or living in Canada to "exercise utmost caution".
The advisory comes a day after tensions escalated between the countries with each expelling a diplomat from the other side.
Canada said it was investigating "credible allegations" linking the Indian state with the killing of a Sikh separatist leader.
India strongly denied this, calling the allegations "absurd".
Analysts say relations between the countries, which have been strained for months, are now at an all-time low.
How India-Canada ties descended into a public feud
Why Western nations fear India-Canada row
On Wednesday, India's foreign ministry said it issued the advisory "in view of growing anti-India activities and politically-condoned hate crimes and criminal violence in Canada".
The Indian government has often reacted sharply to demands by Sikh separatists in Western countries for Khalistan, or a separate Sikh homeland.
The Khalistan movement peaked in India in the 1980s with a violent insurgency centred in Sikh-majority Punjab state.
It was quelled by force and has little resonance in India now, but is still popular among some in the Sikh diaspora in countries such as Canada, Australia and the UK.
Canada has the highest number of Sikhs outside Punjab and has seen several pro-Khalistan protests and demonstrations. In June, reports said India had raised a "formal complaint" with Canada about the safety of its diplomats there.
In Wednesday's statement, Delhi said that some recent threats were directed at its diplomats and some Indians "who oppose the anti-India agenda".
"Indian nationals are, therefore, advised to avoid travelling to regions and potential venues in Canada that have seen such incidents," it said.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Monday that intelligence agencies were investigating whether "agents of the government of India" were involved in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen - India had designated him a terrorist in 2020.
Nijjar was shot dead in his vehicle by two masked gunmen outside a Sikh temple on 18 June in British Columbia.
"Any involvement of a foreign government in the killing of a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil is an unacceptable violation of our sovereignty," Mr Trudeau told the Canadian parliament on Monday.
India reacted strongly, saying that Canada was trying to "shift the focus from Khalistani terrorists and extremists" who had been given shelter there.
Some Indian media reports claimed the statement from Delhi followed a similar Canadian advisory for its citizens travelling to India. Canada's government confirmed its travel advice for India had been updated on Monday but said it had been "as part of pre-scheduled and routine maintenance in the section on travel health information".
"No new risk information has been added to the India TAA [Travel Advice and Advisories] page," a spokesperson told the BBC. Ottawa's advisory asks its citizens to "exercise a high degree of caution" because of the "risk of terrorist attacks throughout" India.

[ad_1] Several U.S. universities have issued travel warnings to their international students and staff, advising them to return to the U.S. before President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration in January. The advisories are based on concerns that his administration may impose travel bans. Trump, who will be sworn in on January 20, has said he plans to sign several executive orders on economic and immigration policies on his first day as president. Due to the disruptions caused by travel bans during his previous term, many top U.S. universities are encouraging international students and faculty who plan to travel abroad around the inauguration to return to the U.S. beforehand. According to data from the U.S. Department of State and other educational bodies, India and China together represent over 54% of all international students in the U.S. For the first time since 2009, India has overtaken China as the leading country of origin for international students in the United States, with 331,602 students in the 2023/2024 academic year, marking a 23% increase from the previous year, according to the Open Doors 2024 Report on International Educational Exchange. China, despite a 4% decrease to 277,398 students, remained the top source of undergraduate and non-degree students, sending 87,551 and 5,517 respectively. David Elwell, Associate Dean and Director of the MIT International Students Office, noted that changes in U.S. administration often lead to policy shifts affecting higher education, immigration, and visa matters. He urged students to reconsider their travel plans for the winter break, as new executive orders under President Trump could influence visa processing and travel. Additionally, he warned that staffing changes at U.S. embassies and consulates could result in delays in visa processing times. (With inputs from Agencies) [ad_2] Source link
