Russia Patented a Two-Seater Version of the Su-57. What's the Motive? - Technology Org
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/russia-patented-a-two-seater-version-of-the-su-57-whats-the-motive-technology-org/
Russia Patented a Two-Seater Version of the Su-57. What's the Motive? - Technology Org
Russia has patented a two-seater version of the Sukhoi Su-57 fighter jet. The standard Su-57 is a twin-engine single-seat fighter of the fifth generation. While this is not exactly news, as they first mentioned the development of the Su-57 back in 2021, it is a good opportunity to remember why the crew of the Su-57 can be expanded to 2 pilots.
The two-seater Su-57 is classified as a multi-role tactical aviation aircraft designed to detect and destroy air, surface and ground targets at supersonic speeds. It can also act as an airborne operations centre for mixed aircraft groups, which can include drones and manned aircraft.
A standard Su-57 is a single-seater, but a twin-seater version was considered for some time. Image credit: Alex Beltyukov via Wikimedia (CC BY-SA 3.0)
The new patent reminds us of an agreement signed between India and Russia in 2007 to develop a new fifth-generation fighter jet. The Su-57 did not even fly at that time – it took off for its maiden flight only in 2010. Later, it was believed that its two-seater modification would be the joint Indian-Russian plane.
However, in 2018 it was reported that India has suspended its participation in the joint program with Russia and will not even buy the Su-57, instead looking at developing something at home.
According to the Ukrainian media, India believes that Russian military aircraft, radars and sensors do not meet the standards of the fifth-generation fighter. On the other hand, it is possible that Russia would keep its best technology to itself even while exporting the aircraft.
The Russian Air Force previously did not want a two-seater version of the Sukhoi Su-57. At least not publicly. However, in 2021, it was reported that such a version was being developed. First of all, so that Russia can properly train its pilots to operate fifth-generation fighters.
The fifth-generation fighters are special in their electronics and stealth shape – they are difficult to detect by radars. Probably the most advanced fighter of the fifth generation is the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor, which is also a single-seater.
Also, interestingly, the two-seater Su-57 can be used as an airborne control platform for the Sukhoi S-70 Ochotnik combat drone. It is possible to imagine that one member of the Su-57 crew will control the fighter, the other will take care of the drone. In this way, the fighter and the drone would work together. Of course, more details about this are not provided, but the two-seater Su-57 is already patented, as reported by Mil.in.ua, and is under development.
In September 2023, Russia demonstrated the Su-35 and Su-57 fighter jets in detail to the North Korean delegation. It is not clear whether North Korea would be able to afford such advanced fighter jets. It would be difficult to pay for them in artillery shells that are allegedly currently being supplied by North Korea to Russia.
