I’ve been a political junkie since before I could vote. I remember, I was in 3rd or 4th grade, listening to the radio when my mom was driving me somewhere. A news brief comes on and it’s about George H.W. Bush and Desert Storm. When the segment ended I said, “George bush sucks!” My mom got mad at me, not because of the statement, but because of the word suck, saying, “where did you learn that word Eugene?! Do you even know what suck means?” Honestly I really didn’t, but I knew it was an insult.
I have never! Not once, bailed on my civic duty to vote since turning 18. Presidential election, midterm election, special election, local. If I was given the opportunity to voice my opinion, I was about it.
I’ve always stayed pretty informed. Sometimes, like the current moment, far too much. The whole process fascinates me. Both the campaigning and the idea behind a representative , democratic election. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not wearing a light up, goofy hat. Although I did attend a Democratic National Convention once. Not the convention itself but I saw Rage Against the Machine perform for my second time, and the DNC time was free!
My first election I voted for Al Gore. I liked him. I thought he was smart. I liked his stance on the environment. I liked that he had the experience under Clinton that he had. I will also tell you, I didn’t then, nor have I ever, repped hats, or shirts, or flags of ANY president or presidential candidate. A pin or two the day I received em, or on my backpack maybe. Never though have I walked around with my political affiliation, or my affliction to a politician on full display. There were times when it wasn’t hard to tell with long hair, patchwork pants, big beard but.
That’s what has me so perplexed, not the hair and beard thing, but the devotion. I don’t get it. It would be different if it was, I don’t know, not Donald Trump! I mean, who really is that guy?
I saw him on Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, a couple times as a kid, thought he seemed smug even then, I missed the whole Apprentice thing, didn’t even own a tv during that time. Was too busy living life. Is that where this follow derives from? I never saw one episode. I heard it wasn’t that good, nor did it have that high of ratings.
He isn’t a very elegant speaker. Go read a quote of his. When he says it, it kinda makes sense, but when you read one, it’s nothing. He says a bunch of words but he doesn’t say anything. It’s actually embarrassing that Trump quotes will forever be part of American history. Here’s an example from a rally when talking about Kamala Harris “back home to mommy. And she goes back home to mommy. ‘Was that you darlling?’ And then she gets the hell knocked out of her. Her mothers a big fan of ours. You know that, right? Her father, her mother. No, you always have that.” Mind you a couple things here. Right before this little snippet I clipped, he was talking about California and “whether you’re a Democrat, Republican, or independent this election is your chance to send a message”. Directly before, the next words are the mommy thing. It doesn’t piece together at all! Also. Kamala’s mom passed away quite a while ago from cancer. What is he even talking about!?
Now compare that to an Obama quote from 2004. “Yet even as we speak, there are those who are preparing to divide us, the spin masters and negative ad peddlers who embrace the politics of anything goes. Well, I say to them tonight, there's not a liberal America and a conservative America - there's the United States of America. There's not a black America and white America and Latino America and Asian America; there's the United States of America. The pundits like to slice-and-dice our country into Red States and Blue States; Red States for Republicans, Blue States for Democrats.”
See. It’s coherent, it has a driven message, it’s passionate. I can get behind that. Not talks about Hannibal Lecter, and electric boats. I don’t get it.
Moving forward.
Let’s talk about his presidency. What bills did he pass? There’s the massive corporate and wealthy tax cut that did very little for 98% of Americans. What else? Anybody? “Well, he built the wall and Mexico payed for it” that is false. There have been small sections built, but scattered, not even one long area. He increased the national debt by over $7.5 trillion. His policies, or lack there of with Covid caused hundreds of thousands of avoidable deaths. Those stimulus checks to keep Americans afloat are the cause of the inflation that we just now got back to normal. When he had to “print” money to give us so we could survive, the value of the dollar went down because there was more capital with no transaction, so with less value the dollar represents, the more things cost in relation to it. Economics is some weird, complicated, almost dogmatic stuff, but it kinda makes sense.
Then there’s the whole not accepting the election results thing. I’ve written and talked about over and over again. It’s exhausting! This is BY FAR the worst thing potentially ANYONE has done to America. More so than the 9/11 terror attacks, Pearl Harbor, Boston marathon, that’s a bold statement. Yet, through his narcissism not allowing him to concede to defeat, and claiming the election was rigged, it is an immensely damaging assault on the very foundation of this whole American democratic experiment. His words have sown doubt into the fabric of democracy with his baseless lies. He absolutely had the right to contest the results, do investigations, recounts, audits, and file suit with the evidence he had supporting his claims. The thing is, he had no evidence, there was no proof of any fraud because, there was none. Thats the end of the behavior that was acceptable. When all those court cases were dismissed for lack of evidence, that should have been it, but no.
All the tweets, all the interviews, all the scheming and plotting, after the court cases and recounts and whatnot, that’s sedition! Thats purposely conspiring against the United States. He knowingly pushed false information to Americans, who believed their commander in chief, and perpetrated the worst assault on our nation’s capital since the Civil War. Thats treason!!
The fact that that wasn’t the end is flabbergasting! The fact he is still in the public eye, let alone running for the seat he so immensely betrayed blows my f*cking mind!!
I don’t care about party affiliation, first and foremost we are Americans. First and foremost our allegiance is to the constitution. First and foremost we abide by the law. This sycophantic groveling to this guy is disgusting! It’s saddening. It’s unamerican.
This upcoming election will, and is saying a lot about us as Americans. The outcome will reflect who we are. I’m not sure I can say with confidence what that is. In the words of 4th grade Eugene, It sucks.

Descendants Headcanons
While all of the kingdoms are united, each of the smaller regions are still ruled by their respective royalty. In places like Charmington, I see it has multiple rulers that work together.
Out of all the royals, Kuzco and Snow White are taken the least seriously. They are seen how they were in their respective stories instead of how they are now, adults in their thirties.
I see Snow and her prince being divorced in the Descendants franchise. It’s not advertised, and Snow drives from her kingdom to Charmington for her reporting job. If it wasn’t for that job, she would rather not be there.
The Dwarves help run Snows kingdom. I see her turning to them after the divorce and they all have high ranking advising jobs in the kingdom.
Snow dose not hold Evie accountable for the Evil Queen’s actions, and gives her the biggest hug when Doug brings her home to meet the family. Snow sees how happy she makes Doug, and that’s all she needs to know about her to accept her.
Kuzco and Snow also have the most protected state forests in the kingdom. Snow wanted a place for all the magical animals to live without fear as the other kingdoms developed more and more while Kuzco knew that overdevelopment would destroy the beauty his kingdom. Both kingdoms have seen an influx of people who want to live simpler lives or lives that reflected what they used to do before the United States of Aurudon was created.
Kuzco was 100% against sending people to the isle. Like, some people only worked for the villains because they really needed a job. His best example would be Kronk, who is a sweet soul and could do no real evil.
For the heroes that didn’t come from royalty and then married into royalty had quite a hard time adjusting to being in a world of politics and royal courts. Most times they focus on being a voice for the people who have to deal with the fallout of their leader’s decisions.
Eugene and Aladdin are best friends when it comes to boring meetings and political parties. They like to steal each others stuff the entire time and by the end they give everything back. There are things that both have noted as off limits in their unspoken rules of the game. When the two were first starting the game Jasmine was mortified while Rapunzel was happy that Eugene is making friends.
Jay wants to play the game with Eugene and Aladdin but Evie won’t let him.
Eugene, Aladdin, and Cinderella are the most likely to take things from the hotel. Cindi will stick to things like soap or pens, but Eugene and Aladdin will take anything not nailed down that they can sneak past their wives.
Eugene has pens and paper pads on him at all time so Rapunzel can doodle whenever she wants. All of these items are off limits in the game, because they aren’t his they are his wife’s.
Rapunzel and Mal love talking about different types of art at royal events, and Rapunzel has invited Mal to Corona so they can work on a Mural together. Eugene has given Ben the wisest advice about always having art supplies on him.
For Mother’s Day, Eugene works hard on making Rapunzel duck tape and paper flower pens because he knows she would like them more than real flowers. Rapunzel refuses to throw any of them away. She stores them in a special vault. May their be mercy on any poor soul that tries to break in and try to steal any of them.
Dude is very protective of Carlos, and barks at any dogs that try to get near him. As a stray who found a loving boy, he would protect this boy to the very end. Even against things that are not a threat.
I see Rodger Radcliffe being Aurudon prep’s music teacher and brings some of the Dalmatians during midterms and finals as a way to help out kids that are stressed.
Anita Radcliffe sees how talented Evie is and would support her business as a fellow designer.
I do want to talk more about these Headcanons as well as develop some aus for this series. Feel free to ask me anything about these or the aus I want to develop.

One of the whistleblowers during the first impeachment process against U.S. President Donald Trump, Democrat Eugene Vindman, has won the election for the U.S. House of Representatives in Virginia, the NYT wrote on Nov. 6.
His victory keeps the district in Democratic hands, sustaining the party's hopes of securing a majority in the House of Representatives, the journalists wrote.
He will replace Democrat Abigail Spanberger in the House, who decided to run for governor.
The 49-year-old Kyiv-born Vindman, a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel and lawyer, is the twin brother of Alexander Vindman. The brothers, born in 1975, lost their mother at age three and were brought to the United States by their father, settling in Brooklyn. Vindman has served as the Deputy Legal Advisor for the National Security Council since 2018.
Both Eugene and Alexander Vindman gained prominence for raising concerns about Trump’s phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in 2019. The conversation, in which Trump was accused of pressuring Zelenskyy to investigate then-political rival Joe Biden and his son Hunter, led to the first impeachment trial. Following their whistleblower actions, both brothers faced dismissal, with Eugene reportedly experiencing retaliatory measures from Trump administration officials.
Donald Trump is the only U.S. president to have faced impeachment proceedings twice. The first process was initiated after a phone call between Trump and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy in 2019, during which the then-president requested the resumption of an investigation into Burisma Holdings, Ukrainian oil and gas company, linked to Hunter Biden, the son of his political rival Joe Biden.
The 45th U.S. president was accused of pressuring Zelenskyy to obtain damaging information on Biden. The House of Representatives voted for impeachment, but the Senate acquitted him entirely.
On Jan. 13, 2021, the House of Representatives passed a resolution for impeachment again. The impeachment process was initiated after Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, where Congress had gathered to certify Joe Biden’s presidential election victory. The riots resulted in five deaths. On Feb. 13, the U.S. Senate did not support impeachment.

• M50 Reising Submachine Gun
The .45 Reising submachine gun was manufactured by Harrington & Richardson (H&R) Arms Company in Worcester, Massachusetts, USA, and was designed and patented by Eugene Reising in 1940. The three versions of the weapon were the Model 50, the folding stock Model 55, and the semiautomatic Model 60 rifle. Over 100,000 Reisings were ordered during World War II, and were initially used by the United States, though some were shipped to Canadian, Soviet, and other allied forces.
Reising was an assistant to firearm inventor John M. Browning. In this role, Reising contributed to the final design of the US .45 ACP M1911 pistol. Reising then designed a number of commercial rifles and pistols on his own, when in 1938, he turned his attention to designing a submachine gun as threats of war rapidly grew in Europe. Two years later he submitted his completed design to the Harrington & Richardson Arms Company (H&R) in Worcester, Massachusetts. It was accepted, and in March 1941, H&R started manufacturing the Model 50 submachine gun. H&R promoted the submachine guns for police and military use, and the Model 60 for security guards. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941 the US was suddenly in desperate need of thousands of modern automatic weapons. Reising's only competitor was the .45 ACP Thompson submachine gun. The US Army first tested the Reising in November 1941 at Fort Benning, Georgia. During this test, several parts failed due to poor construction. Once this was corrected, a second test was made in 1942 at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. In that test, 3,500 rounds were fired, resulting in two malfunctions: one from the ammunition, the other from a bolt malfunction. As a result, the Army didn't adopt the Reising, but the Navy and Marines did, due to insufficient supply of Thompsons.
The Reising submachine gun was innovative for its time. In comparison to its main rival, the famous Thompson, it possessed similar firepower, better accuracy, excellent balance, a lighter weight, a much lower cost, and greater ease of manufacture. Despite these achievements, the poor combat performance of the Reising contrasted with favorable combat and law enforcement use of the Thompson mired the weapon in controversy. The Reising was far less costly ($62) compared to the Thompson ($200). It was much lighter (seven vs. eleven pounds). The Model 55 was also more compact (about twenty-two vs. thirty-three inches in length). The M50 Reising's delayed blowback operation, often classified as hesitation lock, works as follows: as the cartridge is chambered, the rear end of the bolt is pushed up into a recess, in a manner similar to tilting-bolt locked breech guns; but whereas such weapons rely on an additional mechanism to unlock them, in the case of the Reising the end of the bolt that pushes against the back wall of this recess, is subtly rounded, while the wall is correspondingly curved. On firing, the extreme pressure from the propellant gases is thereby able to force the bolt-end down, back to the horizontal. From here the bolt can move to the rear removing the cartridge from the chamber; but the combination of mechanical disadvantage and friction the force of the gases must overcome to push the end of the bolt down has achieved a delay of a fraction of a second, allowing pressure in the barrel to drop to a level sufficiently low for safe and efficient cartridge extraction. The Reising was made in selective fire versions that could be switched between semi-automatic or full-automatic fire as needed and in semi-auto only versions to be used for marksmanship training and police and guard use. The Reising had a designed full-auto cyclic rate of 450–600 rounds per minute but it was reported that the true full-auto rate was closer to 750–850 rounds per minute.
The U.S. Marines adopted the Reising in 1941 with 4,200 authorized per division with approximately 500 authorized per each infantry regiment. Most Reisings were originally issued to Marine officers and NCOs in lieu of a compact and light carbine, since the newly introduced M1 carbine was not yet being issued to the Marines. Although the Thompson submachine gun was available, this weapon frequently proved too heavy and bulky for jungle patrols, and initially it, too, was in short supply. During World War II, the Reising first saw action on August 7th, 1942, exactly eight months to the day after Pearl Harbor, when 11,000 men from the 1st Marine Division stormed the beaches of Guadalcanal, in the Solomon Islands. The same date of Guadalcanal's invasion, the Model 50 and 55 saw action with the 1st Marine Raiders on the small outlying islands of Tulagi and Tanambogo to the north. Serious shortcomings in both guns were becoming apparent. The reality was that the Reising was designed as a civilian police weapon and was not suited to the stresses of harsh battle conditions encountered in the Solomon Islands—namely, sand, saltwater that easily rusted the commercial blued finish, and the difficulty in keeping the weapon clean enough to function properly. Tests at Aberdeen Proving Ground and at Fort Benning, Georgia, had found difficulties in blindfold reassembly of the Reising, indicating the design was complicated and difficult to maintain. The producer, H&R, had not yet mastered mass-production technologies in 1940-1941, and many of the parts were hand fitted at the factory just like the company did with their commercial firearms. While more accurate than the Thompson, particularly in semi-automatic mode, the Reising had a tendency to jam. The Reising earned a dismal reputation for reliability in the combat conditions of Guadalcanal. The M1 carbine eventually became available and was often chosen over both the Reising and the Thompson in the wet tropical conditions.
In late 1943 following numerous complaints, the Reising was withdrawn from Fleet Marine Force (FMF) units and assigned to Stateside guard detachments and ship detachments. After the Marines proved reluctant to accept more Reisings, and with the increased issue of the .30-caliber M1 carbine, the U.S. government passed some Reising submachine guns to the OSS and to various foreign governments (as Lend-Lease aid). Both the Soviets and Canada purchased some Model 50 SMGs, others were given to various anti-Axis resistance forces operating around the world. Many Reisings (particularly the semiautomatic M60 rifle) were issued to State Guards for guarding war plants, bridges, and other strategic resources. After the war, thousands of Reising Model 50 submachine guns were acquired by state, county, and local U.S. law enforcement agencies. The weapon proved much more successful in this role, in contrast to its wartime reputation. Production of the Model 50 and 55 submachine guns ceased in 1945 at the end of World War II. Nearly 120,000 submachine guns were made of which two-thirds went to the Marines. H&R continued production of the Model 60 semiautomatic rifle in hopes of domestic sales, but with little demand, production of the Model 60 stopped in 1949 with over 3,000 manufactured. H&R sold their remaining inventory of submachine guns to police and correctional agencies across America. Decades later, in 1986, H&R closed their doors and Numrich Arms (aka Gun Parts Corporation) purchased their entire inventory.

easy company registration cards part 1
part 2
included in this compilation under the cut are the registration cards of 15 easy company veterans featured in band of brothers (2001). all are taken from publicly available draft records held in online databases and collected by me, and contain details like the registrant's serial number, physical attributes, date and place of birth, phone number, residential and mailing addresses, place of employment and nominated next of kin, as well as their handwriting sample and signature. like or reblog if you use or save.
a note about draft registration
during the second world war, the united states selective service system conducted a total of six draft registrations, the records of which are held collectively in two groupings at the national personnel records centre in st. louis, missouri. members of easy company were drafted in all but one of these registrations from october 1940 through to december 1942. the six registrations are as follows:
16 october 1940: males aged 21 to 35 "within the continental united states". winters, nixon, welsh, toye, perconte and liebgott were among those registered on this date.
1 july 1941: males "who had reached 21 since the first registration". lipton and speirs were registered on this date.
16 february 1942: between the ages of 20 and 45 "who had not previously registered". roe, bull, malarkey and luz, among others, were registered on this date.
27 april 1942: between the ages of 46 to 65 "not eligible for military service". no known easy company members were registered on this date.
30 june 1942: between the ages of 18 to 20. talbert, webster, grant, guarnere, babe, shifty, skip and christenson, among others, were registered on this date.
10-31 december 1942: "those who reached the age of 18 after 12 november 1942". penkala, who turned 18 in august 1942 three months before the cutoff, was nonetheless among those registered in this period.
if you have a family member or ancestor who served in a branch of the us armed forces during either the first or second world war, chances are that you can find their registration card on databases like ancestry.com and familysearch.org.

note: a few online sources incorrectly state that grant was born on 14 july 1915. his registration card gives his real date of birth as 1 march 1922, making him about 7 years younger than people generally think he is. supposedly this misconception comes from confusing grant with another veteran drafted between 1940-42, charles m. grant, who was born on 14 july.

Atlantic Ghost Crab, [The Cannibal]
[Ocypode Quadrata]
Ready to learn about the Hannibal Lecter of crustacean family? Hop on board!
Starter : The Atlantic ghost crab, Ocypode quadrata, is a species of ghost crab. It is a common species along the Atlantic coast of the United States, where it is the only species of ghost crab.
Some fun facts about this good spooky fella!
A 2023 study using the well known mirror test found that these crabs seem to be capable of recognizing themselves in a mirror. They are self-aware.
The atlantic ghost crabs must return to water periodically to moisten their gills, and when larvae must be released into the sea, but they are otherwise terrestrial.
Their stalked compound eyes can swivel to give them 360° vision.
Fun Fact! Ghost crabs are arguably the fastest terrestrial invertebrates, capable of running at more than a meter per second.
The Atlantic ghost crab lives in burrows (like fiddle crabs!) in sand above the strandline.
These burrows can be up to 1.3 m (4'3) deep, and can be closed off with sand during hot periods.
Young crabs are cryptically colored to blend in with their sandy habitats. This way predators are less likely to see them.
Ghostie mate can produce a variety of sounds by striking the ground with the claw, by stridulation with the legs, and an incompletely explained "bubbling sound"
O. quadrata is more active at night than in the day, and is an omnivore, eating clams, mole crabs, insects, plant material, detritus, and even other crabs. They also feed on the eggs and hatchlings of sea turtles.
CANNIBALISM!? Traitors shall walk the plank!
Ghost crabs are both predators and scavengers, and they feed at night. Their prey can be influenced by the type of beach they live on.
These fuckers arr' also mostly carnivores. They got taste, don't they?

Today's contribution for Disability Pride Month
Obligatory "I don't have this disorder. I'm raising awareness because I'm so fucking sick of women that drink while pregnant bitching about how hard it is being an 'autism mom'". (Autism mom in quotes because a) it's probably not autism and b) the phrase "autism mom" to describe "mom if an autistic kid" is stupid.)
(I'm going to use the term "women" instead of "uterus haver" not to be exclusionary or transphobic. But because I have a severe headache effecting my ability to find words. I am trans-masc. Don't cancel me. I'm not a FART.)
(This is not to demonize people that suffer from alcoholism. Addiction is a very real disability. This is to raise awareness for one of the only known preventable birth defects and hopefully seek help.)
Thank you for the people at @bfpnola discord for checking my post to make sure this doesn't sound eugenics-y.
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)
FASD (previously known as fetal alcohol syndrome) is a disability that can range from mild to severe dependant on how much the mother drank while pregnant. It only takes one glass of wine while pregnant to cause this disorder
I already know what the fuck this is. Why are you talking about it?
Because your only know about the severe cases diagnosed as fetal alcohol syndrome. You THINK you know what it is. But the reclassification has only come up in like... 2003? Fetal alcohol syndrome is like... the far end worst severity of FASD. And since the new information of it being a spectrum disorder, estimates have the disorder as high as 5% of the population (and I really think it's higher based on some information I'm about to share).
Fine. So what is this... spectrum disorder?
Very good! So this disorder is HIGHLY misdiagnosed as autism. So all those boomers bitching about "the rates of autism going up?" Yeah they probably caused it. Symptoms include low body weight, facial differences, poor coordination, difficulty maintaining attention, poor memory, poor emotional regulation, slower development, poor reasoning skills, issues with the heart, bones, and kidneys, shorter height, shorter head size,
I have all of those things. How do I know it's FASD and not the autism?
That's kinda the issue. The only real way you can know is ask your mom if there's ANY possibility she's had a drink while she was pregnant. I can't stress this enough IT ONLY TAKES ONE DRINK. For instance I have a lot of those issues, but my mom was so paranoid she wouldn't even dye her hair or drink coffee. Like there's NO WAY.
Like what do I do about it?
Mostly get your accommodations met and raise awareness. Like people are still actively drinking while pregnant because they are still under the pre-2000 belief that just a couple of drinks are okay. It's really not. Not to mention most women don't know they're pregnant until 4-6 weeks in. So they shouldn't be drinking if they're actively trying to have a child. Because that increases the risk.
What the fuck. People are drinking while pregnant? I don't believe you.
Each of these claims are linked.
30.3% of all women reported drinking alcohol at some time during pregnancy, of which 8.3% reported binge drinking (4+ drinks on one occasion)
According to the Center for Disease Control, one in 10 (10.2%) of pregnant women in the United States reports drinking alcohol in the past 30 days.
Despite clear evidence that primary prevention of FASD is possible if prenatal alcohol exposure is avoided, up to 80 % of women drink during pregnancy, many before pregnancy recognition
What? Women are drinking while pregnant? That's fucked up.
This is not to say people with FASD are lesser than.
But all of this "curing autism" when most of this "autism" is caused by a pregnant person's ability to stop fucking drinking for literally 5 minutes. THESE WOMEN THAT ARE DRINKING WHILE PREGNANT ARE THE ONES CAUSING ALL OF THIS GIVING "AUTISM". IF YOU DRANK WHILE PREGNANT. IF THERE'S EVEN A SLIVER OF A CHANCE THAT YOUR DRANK WHILE PREGNANT? ITS PROBABLY NOT AUTISM. ITS PROBABLY THIS DISORDER.
I'm just really fed up with all of these "autism moms" that also make "wine mom" jokes and making light of literal alcoholism bitching about how hard it is to be an "autism mom" because YOU'RE THE PROBLEM. STOP LAUGHING ABOUT YOUR ALCOHOLISM AND PUT THE DAMN GLASS DOWN.
But my parents are literally autistic
So they don't really know the generational effect of FASD because the new knowledge is so new. But since FASD is literally genetic issues caused by alcohol while you're in the womb. It's assumed that it can cause issues that are passed down.
But like this diagnosis is SO NEW that we really don't know much.

Hamas’ grisly terror raid on Oct. 7 has proved to be the single most stunningly successful act in gaining support for the Palestinian cause—not among Israeli or American voters, of course, but among top Democratic policymakers, and their counterparts across the Western world. One might think that a campaign of unrepentant killing, torture, rape, and hostage-taking would be disqualifying for a national independence movement. But in Washington, Hamas’ ongoing crimes have resulted in much of the weight of the U.S. government being brought to bear on advancing the cause of Palestinian statehood, and its correlate, the punishment and demonization of the Jewish state.
Months of U.S. backing for the Palestinian national cause have produced glorious results for Palestinian diplomacy. Whereas less than two years ago, at a meeting with President Mahmoud Abbas, President Biden had declared that “the ground is not ripe” for renewing negotiations between Ramallah and Jerusalem, the Oct. 7 massacres made Biden change his mind—and make the establishment of a Palestinian state with all deliberate speed a central priority of U.S. Middle East policy. Since Oct. 7, four countries have recognized the “State of Palestine,” with three European states indicating their intent to do so in May. That is more recognition than the PA has won in the entire past decade (notably, only one country moved to recognize Palestinian statehood during the Trump administration).
International institutions, seeing that Israel’s protection by the U.S. has been lifted, have also showered gifts on the perpetrators of Oct. 7. In recent weeks, the U.N. General Assembly voted to upgrade the Palestinians’ status, giving them privileges reserved for member states. On Monday, the International Criminal Court charged Israel’s prime minister and defense minister with committing war crimes, placing them on a par with the terrorist leader of Hamas, Yahya Sinwar—a huge diplomatic coup for the terrorist group that creates a moral equivalence between it and Israel. Had Oct. 7 only managed to revive the trial of Jews for killing babies, it would have still been a triumph.
Indeed, in his first three years in office Biden was careful to avoid overtly repealing any of President Trump’s historic pro-Israel initiatives, preferring a more indirect approach that nevertheless signaled the administration’s preferences and end goals. In recent months, the administration has dropped all pretenses—making it clear that Iran, not Israel, is its favored regional client. Israel is forbidden from restoring peace to the country’s north by attacking Hezbollah in Lebanon, or from offering anything more than a token response to a massive direct attack by Iran.
By itself, the specific identity of the perpetrators of gruesome violence does not account for Western advocacy on their behalf. That is explained only by the specific identity of the victims: Jews.Share
A similar about-face applied to the question of Israel’s borders. In November 2019, then-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo clarified that the United States did not view Jews residing in Judea and Samaria (“West Bank settlers,” as they are called) as a violation of international law; two months later he “disavowed” the so-called Hansell Memorandum of 1978, which used shaky legal reasoning to declare Jewish communities in the historic Jewish heartland to be illegitimate. In June 2023, the State Department circulated foreign policy guidance to relevant agencies ending bilateral scientific and technological cooperation with Israeli institutions in Judea and Samaria, East Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights, even as it maintained that it had not reinstated the Hansell memo.
This past February, however, the administration let it all hang out. Without bothering to present any legal analysis, Secretary of State Blinken declared that Jewish communities in those areas that had been ethnically cleansed by Jordan after 1948 were illegal (“inconsistent with international law”), going further than even the Obama administration, which had used the lesser epithet “illegitimate.”
Last month, the administration indicated it might require that Israeli-made products from Judea and Samaria no longer be labeled as “Made in Israel.”

Bean, I just read your fic "nobody wins a war" a couple days ago. It is so unique and well written. Could you tell us more about it? What happened after they move to San Francisco? Thank you.
It’s almost a year old now, and it’s still the fic I am most proud of to be honest! (x)
Max and Daniel move into a tiny one bedroom flat in San Francisco, but it’s all they need. They spend a while just… settling in. They have to do things like scout out a new busking spot for Daniel (very important!), find a new physiotherapist for Max (as the VA doesn’t exist yet), make friends in the community etc etc.
Not too long after they move Carlos gets injured in Vietnam, he’s discharged from the United States Army, leaving Charles alone out there. Max worries himself sick, he’s not there, Pierre isn’t there, Carlos isn’t there to keep Charles safe. He knows Charles won’t be coping, and he’s proven right when Charles appears on his doorstep late one evening.
Charles has been discharged on psychiatric grounds, and he’s in active addiction, which Max half expected. He’s seen what people do to cope. He doesn’t blame Charles at all.
For a while it’s really hard, Charles inhabits their sofa, screams at night, argues with Max during the day, and then cries. And cries. And cries.
Daniel and Max help him get involved in local rehab centres, there’s one that a member of the community has set up specifically for young gay men. It’s a good thing for Charles, a real turning point, and it is where things start to improve for him.
Over the years Daniel gets involved in lots of different types of activism. Max is more of a quiet supporter, but it works for the two of them.
When the war officially ends, Max cries deep heaving sobs of relief into Daniel’s shoulder. They take a walk out to the Golden Gate that evening, and Daniel encourages Max to climb up, hold the railings and scream out into the bay. He does, and then he kisses Daniel out there in the open.
Years later, Daniel is involved heavily in HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns and Max worries for him, worries about the names Daniel gets called, worries for their community. There’s not a huge amount of understanding and at the time so they also worry for their own health (they only sleep with each other and they are clean so it’s okay, but they don’t know that).
But one thing is for sure: they grow old together and their home is filled with song and laughter, and eventually Max’s nephews will visit from Eugene. They grow up knowing that love is love and Uncle Max loves Uncle Daniel and that sometimes people are mean but kindness is the future 🥺♥️

Good morning. This is what fascism looks like.
Lucian K. Truscott IV
Oct 26, 2024
It crept in overnight, while we were sleeping. Fascism showed its face not with jackboots and concentration camps…not yet, anyway…but rather as just another day in Capitalist America. Two major media companies, the Washington Post and the LA Times, made decisions to capitulate to the man they fear will be elected president before a single vote has been counted. They decided not to run editorials endorsing their preferred candidate for president, Kamala Harris, because the owners of the companies, Jeff Bezos and Patrick Soon-Shiong, are afraid if they anger Donald Trump, he will hit them where it hurts: In their pocketbooks.
Bezos sees himself as particularly vulnerable to the wrath of Donald Trump. Before he left office in 2021, Trump appointed a puppet to run the United States Postal Service (USPS): Louis DeJoy, a long-time Republican fund-raiser and major Trump contributor who was appointed as one of three deputy finance chairmen of the Republican National Committee shortly after Trump took office in 2017. The USPS prioritizes package delivery for Amazon and sets the price it pays for the service. Trump has threatened Bezos with jacking up his Amazon delivery prices before, in 2018. The Postmaster General was then Megan Brennan, appointed during the Obama administration, who resisted Trump’s demand to raise delivery prices, but such resistance is unlikely to happen if Trump is elected and DeJoy is there to carry out his wishes.
This is the way it happens. An autocrat like Donald Trump, with his history of impulsive decisions and threats against perceived enemies, has two billionaires cowering in fear, and he didn’t even have to pick up the phone.
Fascism is not an all-at-once transformation. We’ve already had our Brownshirt day, on Jan. 6, 2021, when Trump’s MAGA army stormed the Capitol waving Confederate and Nazi flags and assaulting police officers and attempting to hunt down and kill Nancy Pelosi and Mike Pence, all of it, we now know, with Trump cheering them on from the White House. Fascism uses symbols – MAGA this time, Swastika last time – to rally followers, and then it feeds them fear and lies and the demonization of minorities and others perceived as not like us.
I don’t even know that you can name the period of fascism we’re in right now. Giving it a name doesn’t matter. What matters is that it is happening right in front of our eyes, and little if nothing is being done about it, other than fascism finally being called out by political leaders such as Kamala Harris and other Democrats, and some news organizations have at last crossed the Rubicon of using the “F” word of fascism and the “H” word of Hitler in the same sentences with Donald Trump.
What can we do? We can all vote for Kamala Harris and whatever Democrat is running for whatever office in your district and state.
Journalists everywhere, but particularly at the Washington Post and LA Times, have a crucial role to play right now. It is journalism about Donald Trump’s crimes and political extremism that has revealed him as not just a totalitarian politician, but as a man consumed with a fascist lust for absolute power. It has been people like Timothy Snyder and Heather Cox Richardson who have put Trump’s rise in historical perspective and compared what is happening right now in this country to what happened nearly a century ago in Germany with the rise of Hitler, when German corporate titans of the day bowed down to him in fear.
Now the reporters and editors at the Post and the LA Times can help show the world what contemporary fascism looks like by refusing to countenance the craven subservience of their owners. There are leaders at the Washington Post, in particular Bob Woodward and Eugene Robinson and David Ignatius and Ruth Marcus and Karen Tumulty, who can show the way for their colleagues by leading a newspaper-wide walk out. With what we are seeing every day from Donald Trump, they can call it a “Strike Against Fascism,” or “A Call to Arms.”
You might accuse me as a freelancer of not taking seriously the possibility that people at both papers might lose their jobs for leading or participating in a walk-out. But people have already resigned in protest at both papers. This isn’t a time to show fear. It’s a time to stand up to power. The writers and editors have a lot to lose, but they have already been treated as expendable, and they’ve been told they are in danger of losing their jobs anyway.
The guy Bezos put in as publisher of the Post, former Murdoch hitman Will Lewis, bluntly told Post staffers when he was appointed, “We are losing large amounts of money. Your audience has halved in recent years. People are not reading your stuff. I can’t sugarcoat it anymore.” He could have been talking as well to the staffs of the New York Times and the three major television networks and cable news like CNN and MSNBC. All of them are in an existential crisis at this crucial moment in our history. Newspapers are closing across the country. Television networks and cable news shows are hemorrhaging viewers.
The arrival of Bezos and Soon-Shiong to “rescue” two major American newspapers has shown us how hollow were any hopes that billionaires will or even can make a difference in today’s economic and political climate.
But workers can make a difference. With ten days to go until the election, let’s see if a day with no newspaper in Washington D.C. and Los Angeles can make a difference. Maybe a strike will teach reporters and editors and the rest of us that we are beyond the point of being able to affect our lives and the lives of others. Or maybe rallying against the fascism that has been stealing our national politics will help to send more people to the polls to vote for Kamala Harris on November 5.
I do know this: When you are bullied, you STAND UP or you lose your self-respect and your dignity and your right to life. The fascism of Donald Trump would take away all three.

america invented eugenics?
the USA specifically did. we used it most acutely against immigrants, against institutionalized people, the mentally ill, the disabled, and anyone who wasn’t white. and it very much inspired the nazi party. eugenics is deeply and quietly entrenched in our history. do you know of Hellen Keller? she believed in eugenics. yea seriously
A lot of early thinkers and progressives were eugenicists too.
The American eugenics movement received extensive funding from various corporate foundations including the Carnegie Institution, Rockefeller Foundation, and the Harriman railroad fortune. In 1906, J.H. Kellogg provided funding to help found the Race Betterment Foundation in Battle Creek, Michigan.[13] The Eugenics Record Office (ERO) was founded in Cold Spring Harbor, New York in 1911 by the renowned biologist Charles B. Davenport, using money from both the Harriman railroad fortune and the Carnegie Institution. As late as the 1920s, the ERO was one of the leading organizations in the American eugenics movement.
In years to come, the ERO and the American Eugenics Society collected a mass of family pedigrees and provided training for eugenics field workers who were sent to analyze individuals at various institutions, such as mental hospitals and orphanage institutions, across the United States. Eugenicists such as Davenport, the psychologist Henry H. Goddard, Harry H. Laughlin, and the conservationist Madison Grant (all of whom were well-respected during their time) began to lobby for various solutions to the problem of the "unfit."
Davenport favored immigration restriction and sterilization as primary methods; Goddard favored segregation in his The Kallikak Family; Grant favored all of the above and more, even entertaining the idea of extermination.
Here’s the Wikipedia about the subject if you want to keep reading about it
TW for forced sterilization, eugenics (obviously), genocide, abuse.

Shortly after Covid started, in July of 2020, my father died.
Before I ended the call with my stepmom, who called me when my my father collapsed, my girlfriend already had the car packed.
She knew what to do, and I didn’t need to say anything.
By the time I hung up the phone, he was gone.
We immediately drove up to Washington.
Not for the funeral, but for whatever it was that we did during Covid when a loved one died.
I got to say goodbye to him in an empty room full of empty chairs, with one occupied casket.
It was unfitting for how good of a Man my father was.
And poof,
just like that,
He was gone, and then we drove home.
It never really hits you until later, and it’s usually when you’re not expecting it.
But that’s another story for another time.
One of the more memorable things from our trip was stopping to get gas on our way through Oregon.
Forgetting that you’re not allowed to pump your own gas in Oregon, I began to get out of the car.
With half of my body hanging out the door, the attendant quickly ran up to me and asked what I was doing.
At that point, I said sorry, I forgot you’re not allowed to pump your own gas in Oregon, all while trying to force through a smile, not realizing he’s angry.
From beneath his annoyed masked face, he asked me “Oh, so you’re not from Oregon, why are you traveling out of state during a Global pandemic?”, with his liberal Oregon condescending accent.
He continued to demand I get back in my car, but not before taking my credit card, after being face-to-face with me, and no further than 2 1/2 feet away.
Covid brought the authoritarian out of so many people.
He wasn’t scared of Covid. He wanted to assert some sort of dominance.
Here we are at a gas station in Eugene Oregon, and the gas station attendant feels he has the authority to question where I’m traveling, why I’m doing it, and demands I get back in the car.
He didn’t do this out of fear. If he was scared, he wouldn’t have approached me at all.
He would’ve been very careful to keep his distance.
He did this because he was given the smallest amount of authority, and it made him cruel. This is how people behaved before vaccines became available.
This is how people behaved before they were calling for doctors, nurses, and hospital staff to be fired for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine.
This is how they behaved before they were calling for forced COVID-19 vaccinations within the military.
This is how they behaved before the president of the United States of America tried to take the livelihood of every American that refused the COVID-19 vaccine, that worked for a company with 100 employees or more.
It was never about science, it was never about your health, it was never about your safety.
IT WAS ALWAYS ABOUT YOUR COMPLIANCE.
We can never forget how people behaved during Covid.
But more importantly, we can never let people forget how they behaved during Covid, or they will do it again.
I am here to remind everyone, and I will continue telling my story.
You should tell your story too.
People would love to hear it.
I know I would.
Thanks for reading.

Chapter 7: The Medical Question—The Prophecy (BoB Fanfiction)
A/N: The friendships here that are developing admittedly make me very happy! Haha, as always, please enjoy and let me know what you think!
Eugene Roe was quick as he moved between the stations, attentively performing each task to completion. Winnie had noticed his attention to detail and quick-thinking right away, back when they had first started training the medics. He always thought on his feet, he had a good bedside manner—at least as far as Winnie could tell.
All personal preferences aside, Winnie highly considered him the best medic that they had ever trained. It wasn’t just his temperament or quick-thinking. It was the fact that he improvised, he assessed, he was efficient in the way that he diagnosed and performed tasks. He could delegate, he could triage, and that was a skill that could not be taught. It had to be inherent in the medic or the doctor.
At the moment, he was moving between the stations and working on the poor souls that had been picked out by Sobel to play medical dummies for the purposes of training. Winnie took careful notes, eyes flicking between the rest of the medics as they moved. The timer buzzed and she glanced up from her clipboard.
“Next station!” Winnie called.
“Spina’s doing just fine,” Eileen observed, coming to a stop next to Winnie. “So is Roe. Easy will be in good hands,” she reassured Winnie.
Winnie knew that Eileen was right about that. But she wanted them to be in the best hands. She wanted any of the men that they trained here as medics to feel capable and ready for whatever was going to happen in battle. She knew that they couldn’t prepare them for obviously everything—but any of their shortcomings as medics would likely fall on their lack of preparation during training.
And that was a guilt she didn’t want anyone to have—not herself, not her nurses, and not these medics.
“Everyone here is on track to passing,” Reba added, arriving beside the two of them. “I’ve just overseen the last of the stations and it looks like everyone has passed. Now they just need to pass the written and Winn’s ridiculous interview portion that she thinks is necessary.”
At that, Winnie scowled. “It is necessary,” Winnie huffed. “I just want to get an idea of what they’re going to be like as medics and how they’d handle different situations. And this is the best way for me to do that.”
“You know that this isn’t actual medical school, right?” Eileen prodded lightly, a teasing smile on her face.
“Trust me, I’m well aware. Though this camp is just as male-dominated as medical school was,” Winnie stated dryly.
“I still can’t believe you went to medical school rather than do a nursing program,” Reba mumbled, shaking her head.
“I’d much rather be the person in charge,” Winnie replied, flashing a fakely large smile in Reba’s direction.
“You’re certainly good at it,” Eileen mumbled. “Ma’am.”
Winnie rolled her eyes at their words. In the weeks that Reba and Eileen had been working with her, Winnie had come to understand that they did, in fact, like her. It just so happened that Winnie was a hard-ass, but it helped that they all shared a room and talked to one another at night-time. And there was also the shared experience of being the few women at Camp Toccoa.
They were united in those fronts, and in the way that they wanted to help with the war, with Easy Company.
But sometimes, she knew she could be hard on them—and on everyone else.
Winnie blew her whistle, calling the room to attention as the timer ran out. “Alright everyone, gather up,” Winnie called in a firm tone. The medics moved quickly, all six of them standing at attention and waiting for Winnie to continue. “I’m pleased to report that you all have passed the practical application of your tests. The written portion will follow tomorrow—so read up if you’re worried about anything. Assuming you all pass that, we’ll have a short interview portion—and then you’ll be done with the basics.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Winnie sat behind a desk, tapping her pencil lightly against the desk. She could feel the intensity of Roe’s gaze on her, watching her carefully as she silently sat there. “Do you feel ready for this, Roe?” Winnie questioned, raising a brow.
“Yes,” Roe replied in a steady tone. “I’ve been payin’ attention, memorizin’ things. I think I can handle it.”
Maybe it was the fact that Winnie had grown up in the South, maybe it was the fact that she had had a Cajun neighbor when she was a kid, but for whatever the reason, Eugene Roe’s voice was a comforting thing to her. “I’ve seen you under pressure, Roe. I think I agree with your own self-assessment. Can I be frank with you?”
“You’re my superior officer, ma’am.”
“That’s not what I asked,” Winnie said, giving a dry smile.
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Medics see a lot of shit,” Winnie said, smile disappearing off of her face as quickly as it had appeared. “It’s not an easy thing, watching your friends and buddies go through stuff that you can’t always help them with. It’s gruesome, it’s exhausting, it’s mentally and emotionally draining in a different way. And you don’t get to fire a gun—you don’t get to defend your brothers in the same way. So I reiterate my previous question: do you feel ready for this, Roe?”
There was a heavy beat of silence. “Seems to me, ma’am,” Roe said, voice firm as he looked at her intently. “That we need some good medics—and if I can help in this way, then that’s where I wanna be.”
Winnie let a beat of silence drag on for a second. “Roe, I think you’re gonna be one hell of a medic.”
A smile spread across Roe’s features. “Thank you, ma’am.”
“Yeah yeah, don’t let it go to your head. You’ve still got a long ways to go before you do anything monumental or life-saving. But you’ll be there, swear to God,” Winnie said with a hint of a smile gracing her features.
“I won’t let you down.”
“No, I don’t think you will,” Winnie said with a nod. “Now you best get to Mess before all the food is gone and Sobel makes you do latrine duty or something.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“You know, that smug facial expression that you make does not make meal time any easier,” Nixon observed, gaze falling on Winnie during meal time.
“Well I like being right,” Winnie retorted.
“You two need to stop arguing all of the time,” Winters said, barely glancing up from his food.
“But Dick, you’d be bored if we stopped arguing,” Nixon grinned, locking eyes with Winnie.
“I’d get some peace, you mean,” Winters corrected.
“If you’re here for peace, you might’ve signed up for the wrong thing,” Winnie replied dryly. “Something about being a paratrooper and going over to fight in a war?”
“Ha, ha,” Winters deadpanned. “I didn’t realize.”
Winnie gave a rare grin, eyebrows shooting up. “Wow Dick,” she said in a lightly teasing tone. “I had no idea you could be so sarcastic and be like the rest of us lowly humans.”
Winters gave a deep sigh, shaking his head at her. “You know as well as I do that I’m perfectly human.”
“Well Winn and I were talking and we were pretty sure it was immaculate conception or something with you—” Nixon started.
“That’s wildly inappropriate,” Winters stated.
“Maybe,” Winnie agreed with a grin. “But you’re the one who willingly spends your time with Nix and I.”
“Nix?” Winters asked, narrowing his gaze at her.
Winnie just gave a shrug. “Yes, and?”
“Nothing,” Winters replied, looking between the two of them. “Just seeing an uncanny resemblance in the reason why you two would be friends.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Nixon questioned, furrowing his brow. “Winnie’s a delight and so am I.”
“Yeah, what he said,” Winnie said with a nod.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Does she really have to be here for this—” Nixon abruptly shut up at Sobel’s look of utter disdain.
Winnie just shifted on her weight, crossing her arms and watching the scene unfold in front of her. Sobel was on one of his many contraband busts—this time going through all of the men’s personal lockers. She was half surprised he hadn’t gone through the nurse’s things, though she had a feeling that it was more to do with Colonel Sink than it was to do with anything else.
Still, she knew why he wanted her here. It was in case there was, in fact, anything stolen from medical that he could pin on her poor leadership skills. But Winnie just stood there, watching the scene unfold. She had medical on lock—not a single thing was missing.
“Pornography! Contraband!” Sobel exclaimed, slamming a magazine down. He dumped out another locker on a cot, immediately snatching up a Sunday tie. “Non-regulation clothing—contraband.” He stalked over to another box. “This man had 200 prophylactic kits in his locker! Doc—”
“Not taken from medical. We’re legally required to sell those to the men rather than give them out,” Winnie retorted quickly.
Sobel’s eyebrow ticked in annoyance. “Be that as it may—” His gaze trained onto the other officers. “How in the name of God was he going to have the strength to fight the war?” He demanded, chucking the box on the ground as a pile of letters was handed to him. “And how is it that Private—Private Tipper has spare time for so much correspondence?”
“Captain, are personal letters to be considered contraband?” Winters asked, gaze flickering onto the letters in slight disbelief.
Bringing a letter up to his nose and sniffing the perfume, Sobel gave them a dirty look. “These men aren’t paratroopers yet, Lieutenant. They have no personal property.” He stalked over to the next cot, picking up a can of peaches. “What is this? Anybody?”
“Uh, it’s a can of peaches, sir,” Nixon stated, trying his best not to grin at the sight of it.
Winnie bit down on her lip, resisting her own urge to grin at Nixon’s nonchalance and shit-eating way that he did everything. “Lieutenant Nixon thinks this is a can of peaches. That is incorrect, Lieutenant. Your weekend pass is canceled. This is United States Army property, which was taken without authorization from my mess facility and I will not tolerate thievery in my unit. Whose footlocker is this?”
“Private Parkes, sir.” Winters answered.
“Get rid of him,” Sobel commanded in an even tone. He stepped forward, eying Winnie and the group of officers he had gathered. “All weekend passes are canceled, officers included. Carry on.”
He stepped outside, with Winters following closely after him. Almost immediately, Winnie turned and smacked the side of Nixon’s head. “It’s a can of peaches?” She demanded. “Really?”
“Ow—good God woman, quit hitting me!” Nixon exclaimed, pushing her hands away from him. “Aren’t you supposed to follow a Hippocratic Oath or something?”
Winnie just gave a roll of her eyes. “Aren’t you supposed to be the intelligence officer or something?”
Nixon grinned at that. “Touche, Winn. But it’s not my fault that he’s bored all of the time and enjoys making the rest of us miserable.”
“To be fair,” Winnie retorted, staring at the scattered prophylactic kits on the ground. “This is an absurd amount of prophylactics. There’s not even that many women in Toccoa—let alone in the county.”
A snicker fell from Nixon’s lips. “You think so?”
“Oh I know so,” Winnie replied. “You’re just lucky he didn’t check Winter’s footlocker or yours.”
“How’d you know about that?” Nixon piqued a brow.
“You’re always drinking. There are only two possible hiding places,” Winnie deadpanned. “It’s not that hard to figure out.”
“Well you’re not gonna snitch on me, are ya?”
“No, but you better be sobered up when it comes time for the medics to perform some field tests for Sobel,” Winnie said pointedly.
“Yes, ma’am.”
Cool Heritage/Family Facts about Band of Brothers Characters:
George Luz had Portugese-descended parents and nine siblings.
Darrell "Shifty" Powers had Indigenous heritage.
Eugene Roe was Cajun, as shown in the show, but his early life was most likely more interesting than we know. Historical records say Eugene was born in 1922 in Bayou Chene (translated from French as Oak Bayou), which was a small, unincorporated community located in the Atchafalaya Basin, which is the largest swamplands in the United States.
Bayou Chene was a community settled in the 1830s, located approximately 40 miles north of Morgan City, Louisiana. The U.S. post office was established there in 1858. The settlers there ran a church, a school, a merchandise store and the post office, which were all located on the bayou. In the 1920s it had approximately 500 residents, most of whom had lived there for generations after settling there from other communities both within and outside of Louisiana. They were swampers, lumberjacks, trappers, farmers, fishermen and moss pickers.
Despite occasional flooding, Bayou Chene thrived until the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 destroyed much of the community. This would have been when Eugene Roe was five years old.
The community rebuilt but declined after construction of the Atchafalaya Spillway levees and dredging of river channels caused repeated flooding of the community. While we know the Roes at one time relocated to Morgan City (Most likely due to the flooding), what used to be Bayou Chene now no longer exists, and now lies under 12 feet of silt. So when we talk about Eugene being bayou, the man was BAYOU.
