One of my favorite things is taking someone to the Great Lakes for the first time - or describing how you can fly over them and see only hundreds of miles of glittering blue water and no coasts at all; how they have their own Coast Guard (the only lakes to do so); that the Earth's rotation steers their currents; that they're studied using ocean models; that they have wrecked more than 6000 ships - and watch them realize that the word "lake" is misleading and that they had no idea of the size and majesty of them at all.

ITS GREAT LAKES AWARENESS DAY!!!!!

On this excellent day, be aware that this is the largest group of freshwater lakes in the world, covering over 95,000 square miles and reaching depths of over a thousand feet. They are beautiful freshwater seas.

Also when you die in these lakes, the very cold, oxygen-poor conditions at the bottom preserves you perfectly for all eternity. You will not rot and nothing will eat you. You will exist for as long as the Great Lakes do. Many shipwrecks still have the crew on board. Be Aware.

I live in Michigan; please observe which Great Lakes are in contact with Michigan. Ontario is a Great Lake, but it's not Michigan's Great Lake. We get four out of five; I can get to any other Great Lake without leaving my state.

I would need to go through Canada or several other states to get to Ontario. It's lovely, but it is very literally no business of mine.

It's wild to reflect on the fact that SS Arthur M. Anderson, the last ship to be in contact with the Edmund Fitzgerald on the night of November 10, 1975—whose captain received the message "we are holding our own" from the Fitzgerald—is still around on the Lakes, just doing her normal things as a freighter.

Here she is departing Muskegon, Michigan, last weekend!
