The Visual Genius Behind UY2022 [Animation]- An Analysis 🧐 (Long Post)

Hai there, hope you’re having a great day! Today on ‘Yuca Analyzes Silly Things (For No Reason)’, we’ll be talking the next half about how the remake uses different methods and techniques to achieve the fun aesthetic it’s known for as well as analyzing colors!

Note: There’s a lot to talk about when it comes to this topic, so I might not be able to cover ‘everything’, So I’m only analyzing sub- topics which comes to mind. And all of my sayings are merely observations based on what is shown and is not canonical fact in how the series was made (there’s the chance that a different approach was used as well after all). They are not confirmed unless specifically mentioned.

But, first… …I want to talk about something I missed previously, which I was reminded by the notes in one of the reblogs, which is.. The shape of Lum’s eyes (I’ve thought of this before but I forgot to write about it). Lum’s eyes in the remake are a bit different to how it is in the later parts of the manga. There, it shares the same shape as Shinobu’s eyes for example, but here it looks more like her earlier eye design:

Why this? I’ve though about it and I was reminded of a RT interview I had read where she said:

Of course, Lum’s eyes changed as time went because of her artistic evolution, but I think this might be one of the reasons her ‘slanted’ eyes were kept, as in to pay homage to the early art style. It could also be because they wanted to give her more unique eye shape compared to the other girls…

Colors, colors and colors! Now onto one of my favorite things in general���.

…Color Palettes (and monochrome colors as well, but we’ll include that in this for now because I don’t want to create a separate section for that one)!! I absolutely love the remake’s use of colors!! In general they make scenes even more eye catching than they normally would, but there are cases where the use of color palettes are complete genius, which I will prove with a few examples…

Our first example is from episode 1, when Ataru meets Lum’s dad. When the scenes swaps from Lum’s dad’s greeting to Ataru screaming “ONIII!!” The background with Mr. Invader (Not his actual name, but I’m calling him that because it’s easier) gets color paletted (I’m pretty sure that’s not a word but whatever…). If you look closely and if you’re familiar with Japanese mythology, you can see that Lum’s dad is colored red with light yellow horns…. Just like the actual Oni from the myths…

I also love how well colors are used to elevate extreme emotions, most often shock or surprise…

(Lmao, I just realized both siblings had the exact same SHOCK sequence… I do have to note that the duplicating method adds to the sequence as well…)

That’s all the images I’ll show since these are pretty easy to find… The aspect that makes this better is the fact that since in the 80’s cell animation couldn’t have stuff like blending modes and special effects and stuff that digital animation has nowadays, they had to rely on color usage like this as well…

So at the same time it’s like a nice little shout out to cell animation in general…

And also a moment of appreciation of how this scene was handled…

Since the manga is in black and white, you can’t tell the difference between ink and blood since they’re both colored black. It’s a bait which is difficult to convey into anime because it’s in color and blood and ink are suddenly no longer alike because of the colors, the remake manages to convey it with the power of color palettes and monochrome colors it had in the first place as shown above for a well done bait joke… And finally, it’s just outright pretty…

Smooth and Fun Animation Now to talk about the animation itself! First up we have a small detail I like. Do you know about the method used to make the animation extra fluid and kinda cartoony by drawing in something that doesn’t seem right in the frame but helps in the animation overall (I don’t know what it’s called)? Well, this particular method results in a frame or two in a scene to look like:

It’s a method the original anime used A LOT for it’s characters, even for that particular era. Since most modern anime aren’t doesn’t have a cartoony style like UY, they don’t use it (they use other methods instead). So what about the remake???

Yup, the remake has it’s moments as well.. The animation in general is like most modern anime with some cartoonish movements from more cartoony characters like Ataru (pictured above and) and Rei (Cow-Pig form). I also love how beautiful the animation is in the second half of episode 5 and 10, most of the details are pretty obvious there so I won’t talk about it, but here’s one of the smaller details I like…

I love how the clouds move slowly, like how it naturally would, like they didn’t have to do that yet they did it anyway and that’s quite the effort and it adds to the scene overall…

Miscellaneous This section is more about the miscellaneous aspects, or to be specific ,three other things I noted which also contributes to the animation aspect. First up, SFX. SFX is what you call the Japanese Onomatopoeia (or sound effects) which is written on screen. It’s mostly used in manga than anime because manga isn’t an audible type of media, unlike anime, which is. Because of that, not many anime uses it and only a certain do, which includes the UY remake. Not only does it add a bit more to the scene, but it also makes it more enjoyable because of the voice acting since the voice actors read every SFX out, where it sounds silly enough (in Japanese at least, the English dub is on a whole different level). Next up, Backgrounds. Okay, so when I started the remake’s first episode I was in awe as to how the backgrounds for the scenes look, like it’s very pastel compared to the saturated colors of everything else, not to mention, very detailed…

Also, let’s appreciate how beautiful the backgrounds for outer space looks…

Another thing I like is the stock backgrounds, stock backgrounds are pretty common in anime, but I love how the remake uses it to play up and convey the character’s emotion by making the stock lines move according to how their expressions elevate…

Moving on, Can we appreciate how retro and traditional it looks when they color like this (this is actually based on a method of coloring from the 80’s after all)??

And finally appreciation for the beautiful lighting…

Conclusion And that is All! The remake is absolutely stunning with very beautiful details which I can’t help but love and you can really see a lot of love was put into it. will loves dragons. dragons come from eggs. will is also an egg (respectfully), has dragon imagery all around him, has dragons in his room, and draws them all the time. 1 + 1 = 🥚 = trans.

people make fun of will's clothes. they're too tight. st literature states he gets hand-me-downs from both joyce and jonathan. his sister also borrows his clothes. depending on what your trans hc is, maybe he prefers his brother's clothes, maybe he prefers his mother and sister's. maybe he likes a baggier fit that hides his body, maybe he likes it when things are more form-fitting. what does he want to emphasize? what does he want to obscure? does he feel better in certain colorways, patterns, or cuts? is that part of what people make fun of? you could do a lot here and it works any which way.

trans will can be anything and anyone. genderqueer? sure. ftm? sure. nonbinary? sure. agender? genderfluid? demigender? whatever floats your boat. he's different, cannot help being different, and always has been. even amongst his fellow freaks, amongst his loved ones, he's still... different; a mistake. in ways they aren't and can't understand. and still, he perseveres. he holds onto his sense of self, clings to it like a lifeline, even when those closest to him try to tear him down. he isn't like anyone else—he's just will. 🏳️‍⚧️

What’s in a name, indeed? 🧐

Some fun facts from when I created Rey’akina! I used a Na’vi translator to find the words and made up the rest, I posted the breakdown of her name in an AO3 comment a long time ago, but here’s her parents’ names and bits of info on them too. 🤗

✨REY’AKINA✨: No surprise, Rey’akina (lovingly nicknamed as Rey’ka by Spider, but more on that later 🙂) had the most amount of time and thought put into her name. I used the Na’vi words: reykol (play music; to make sing), kakpam (deaf), and inan’ (read surroundings; gain knowledge from sensory input). So, it very loosely translates (by my own thinking lol) to: “Singer of Silent Understanding”. I did have a few other variations using ‘deaf’ and ‘knowledge’, but settled on this one after a while. Her father named her this because she would see and feel the world differently. Her life has its own rhythms, her own ‘first song’.

🌘ME’LIESI🌒: Rey’akina’s mother is the most untold and mysterious member of the family because she disappeared shortly after her one and only child was born. Me’liesi’s name is comprised of the Na’vi words: messray (the day after tomorrow) and lie si (experience). My loose translation is: “Experience After”. Her mother was also an only child. Rey’akina’s grandmother had a very long and difficult pregnancy. She was born almost a month late, but both mother and baby were fine.

🪨EY’PEY🪨: Rey’akina’s father was the constant in her life and his name couldn’t be more perfect. Ey’pey’s name comes from the Na’vi word: maweypeyyu (one who is patient). My loose translation is simply: “Patience”. He is one of triplets; the last one to be born after his sister and brother. Even growing up, he was the calmest of the three and the last to achieve life events. Everything from learning to walk and talk as a child to finding a mate and having a child of his own. His whole world revolved around Rey’akina from the moment she was born up until his passing from natural causes seven years into their nomadic lifestyle.

Extra fact! This will be further explained towards the end of SAS (yes, I promise it has an end and it’s a happy one!) but the reason she accepted the nickname of Rey’ka early in the story was due to Spider’s limited ability to understand the Na’vi sign language. She found his kindness and efforts to communicate with her so endearing that she accepted the moniker as a special way to celebrate their new friendship.

hi yay thank you for giving me an opportunity to yap 😈 putting all this below the cut because i couldn't help myself. here are all the sets i own in the order i got them + my thoughts on them

1) 10281 Bonsai Tree

this was given to me for my birthday last year! i think this set has become an instant classic, it's such a nice looking display piece. i put it on the windowsill in my staircase which was very silly because when it gets knocked over, those loose studs go EVERYWHERE 😭

2) 31140 3-in-1 Magical Unicorn

this is my favourite set ever i love it so much! i impulse bought it in a bookshop one day because it has a seahorse and is rainbow, two of my favourite things. i've definitely gotten my money's worth with how many times i've built and rebuilt the different models. plus, on Rebrickable, there are so many custom models people have made out of these pieces! i've turned it into a rhino, a boat and a helicopter from other people's instructions. love that website.

fun fact, an hour or two after i bought this (this was before i even really started getting into lego) they released the first teaser for the Animal Crossing lego sets. the way i manifested that?

3) 21340 Tales of the Space Age

this was a christmas gift! i think it's really pretty and i love how you can change the constellation in the third one. that being said, it just feels a bit silly to have a set be so 2D like this? this could have been an art print.

4) 77050 Nook's Cranny & Rosie's House

i got this one in March! when the AC sets were announced i vowed to get all of them no matter what. i have not done this because they are very expensive for what they are and i don't love them as much as i wanted to... the minifigs are perfect but i think the way that everything is on its own little squircle base looks a bit messy. that being said, as someone who grew up loving Animal Crossing but never had any merch because it was still pretty niche, my inner child was very happy building this set :) i really enjoy how you can change the layout of the furniture in the house and all the individual outdoor pieces.

4a/4b) 30662 Maple's Pumpkin Garden and 30635 Beach Cleanup

these two little sets came for free with the previous one! the Animal Crossing one is cute, kinda whatever though. it's pretty much just an add-on to the main sets. love Maple ❤️

the Friends one though? i held off on building it so i could have it to cheer me up some day i was feeling low. when i finally did build it i fell in love with it! it's just really colourful and cutesy. my first job was actually litter picking by the seaside so it's so bizarre and coincidental that i ended up with this. i've attached this set beside Rosie's house to try and incorporate it into my little Animal Crossing town. i guess Aliya is the player? Pascal looks different though 🧐

i will say though that this set does feel very greenwashy. i follow some sea glass collectors on instagram and they're always finding lego bricks washed up on the shore... i can't really talk because i'm out here buying their products but i do feel a bit guilty sometimes. but also life is short and i'm just trying to be happy. idk. surprise ethical discourse 🤩

🧐 FACE WITH MONOCLE — is your oc more logical or emotional? Just like societies on Earth, people on Reyal vary a lot in whether they're driven by emotions or logic. However, overall, I would say they're driven by emotion a little more than Humans! They're originally a prey species with highly communal and religious tendencies, and as such, aren't the best when it comes to logic and reasoning. This is one reason as to why they're only 160~ years ahead of us in technological development (circa 1972), despite their first cultures being around for nearly 231,388 years.

🤓 SMILING FACE WITH GLASSES — is your oc chatty or quiet? are they at ease in social situations, or are they more shy? Some people are pretty shy, but for the most part, people love to talk! Most shows, movies, music, and books all have several lines of thinking/melodies to follow at once. It isn't too overly stimulating, but enough that the average Human would probably find it a little annoying.

💯 HUNDRED POINTS SYMBOL — share three random facts about your oc that others may not know. 1. Despite being herbivores, quite a few cultures partake in eating fish and insects from time to time. This is usually relegated to ceremonies only, with most people struggling with digestion and the overall taste. In recent years, the process has increasingly turned to food modified to recreate the appearance, with none of the harmful side effects.

2. Most people are fairly obsessed with Yuniv and Semat, a pair of explorers who charted a path to the northern hemisphere from the south. An entire region, stretching out more than three times the size of the United States, is named after them! There are also numerous radio plays, shows, movies, books, and even games based on their lives. Quite a few embellish the truth of their voyage for dramatic flair, but they're still very well enjoyed by many.

Only until what would be around 2758BCE did the first actual full blown wars begin, which lasted only a few years even then. Respective religions, not wanting to lose their disciples early before their "salvation", agreed to hold publicly monitored meetings in neutral territory, as well as limiting things to their own proselytizing. Things were still fairly rough after this, but thankfully, war has pretty much since been eliminated.

Someone gently pried his fingers away, he watched as if the limbs did not belong to him, then smiled at Nicky, his brain categorizing this exact moment as an entirely different scene in a movie leaving all old thoughts and emotions behind. Riko could finally get lost on the dance floor with the one fox taking the role of Polaris as a very pleasant reference point in the system. Then Nicky kissed him.

Meditation: You were the only audience member in a large auditorium. There was a child dancing on stage, but they weren’t yours, and something wasn’t right. Not the right day, time, kid even idk, something was off - that’s why you were the only person there. You left to find someone and when you came back the child told you to wait, so you sat down and waited…for nothing. No one came…in time? Or you weren’t comfortable. So you did actually leave, a second time, this time for good. What happened to the kid? It’s giving “not my problem” with an uncomfortable situation.

What It Is: Embracing Enthusiasm 🥳

I love this reading 🥹 You’re going to strip away the parts of you that are illusions, masks, false personas and socially acceptable (but fake af) facades that you’ve created over who knows how long. A year, ten years, 50 years. Work face meets home face meets family face, all of the faces are melding into one - perhaps uncomfortably to you at first - but ultimately it’s very beneficial for you…to be whole.

The meditation seems to point towards abandoning yourself, your inner child, and that real you needs a chance to come out and play again. You could’ve spent way too much time and energy with career and practical concerns - and you’re tired of things that don’t fill your heart with meaning, joy, a destination, a goal to achieve and a purpose to fulfill. So you’ll find something that does…could be family or relationship based. Bringing the fun back into your world, romance too. When did we all become so serious 🧐 about everything? If there’s no passion in it, what is the point? Money? Obviously, for bills, but…you’re done faking it.

I’m seeing a literal location change for someone, a house you can’t afford or a neighborhood going up in price, it’s something you can’t manage anymore…but you want to do something else anyway. You’re tired of it anyway. You could get extremely emotional during moments where your masks are actually converging, I’m hearing, because for a lot of you it’s like you aren’t even aware you have them. Whatever happens to trigger this could make you act out, or someone else.

Someone isn’t the “right” gender, for the trans story this would be a full transition…maybe you can’t really afford it but you’re doing it anyway. Some of you could be selling a home (or heirlooms, I’m hearing) to help you pay for something big like this. Others could be working on their home and finally making changes they’ve been saving up for. Repairs, moving costs, financial transitions are as important as the aesthetic ones from what I can see. Or it’s aesthetic but expensive. FUN. Downstairs remodeled game room! Some of you have saved and are taking action - it’s been a rough road - and others haven’t saved and have to take a different route that *will* ultimately work out for the best, because Accomplishment is attached to it. Someone here is going to be able to work at home 🏡 and that’s going to solve a lot of stress…and maybe inspire you to spruce up your home. But now your home people are seeing “work” you, SHH 🤫 At the end of this transition - how it’s being described - you’ll feel more centered, authentic, and confident in who you are as a “whole” person, and where you’re decisively going. There’s nothing outside of you to influence you in any one particular area, if it’s all jumbled together there’s nothing able to bs, influence, or pressure you. One face, one goal, one Accomplishment…and you’re going to love it. Not at first. Not in the thick of it. After the fact 💜

But what specifically? I think it’s whatever you want, that’s the whole point. You will achieve this and be happy & childlike again, moving away from the old and towards the new, or deserved, earned, and achieved. Much of this is related to old wounds you’ve released, or will. You always wanted a workout area in the backyard, grew up where you couldn’t afford it, and now you’re building it. Wholesome. And in the process, strengthening relationships with people who only saw you as one way and now get to see another side of you (or all of them, even better).

🧐 What genre dominated your 2022 fics? Romance, adventure, angst, etc.? well it'd probably be romance, wouldn't it? i feel like most fics i write focus on a romantic duo and i don't particularly lean angsty without also getting a lot of romance in there. although i will say! looking at my fics on ao3 there were a few that wouldn't be classified as romance, but i still think that's the genre that the majority of the fics fit into. i didn't write any adventure, i wouldn't say that there's enough hurt/comfort or angst to make a dent, minimal fantasy, no science fiction, no historical works... i'd say romance is the answer here!

🤯 What’s the coolest thing you learned researching for a fic? i did a lot of research into professional ballet companies for pas de deux, which was cool! the way that they're structured is really interesting, and i enjoyed watching a lot of youtube videos about them. for one specific fact, though, i think learning that there are over 100 statues of peanuts characters (snoopy, charlie brown, linus, and lucy) across the minnesotan twin cities metro area was cool! i actually learned that when researching for a pdd director's cut that i might post, but while i've seen a lot of them i didn't know the full number

💖 Was there a comment or another piece of feedback that made you feel all the warm and fuzzies? i think particularly warm and fuzzy comments or pieces of feedback are ones that i don't expect! i absolutely love getting comments from my friends, but comments from unfamiliar people hit a little different, like getting a 5-star yelp review on my restaurant from a one-time patron vs. a regular. i love the regulars! i know that they enjoy my food and we talk about our lives when i stop by the table to see if they need a refill on beverages, but those comments or reviews from other people are a nice little surprise. pdd has gotten traction from people who's ao3 names i don't recognize, but also megs read and commented on my stranger things fic, which i didn't necessarily expect! so stuff like that is always fun. that being said, any comment where it's clear that the reader very sincerely enjoyed themself makes me happy, because that's always the goal :)
