there is thunder in our hearts - this story came together so easily for me, like i knew exactly how i wanted to tell it from start to finish

the only hoax i believe in - a kfam fic in my top 5s why yes and i'll tell you why. because i poured so much of myself into this fic that they could probably read it at my funeral instead of a eulogy

traveling so far to get there - after party au raph and mikey continue to take up so much real estate in my brain and for what

now the darkness comes alive - this one is more recent but im so happy with the way it turned out :')

if we could stay all day in the sun - it was a lot of fun reimagining one of my favorite fairy tales and doing a bunch of unnecessary research for this story i will stand by it until the day i die !!

why are queer characters so important in modern media?

right guys, sit down and buckle your seatbelts, because i'm about to explain why so many of us feel so strongly about characters being not straight or cis- particularly talking about stranger things, because that's what i'm the most into right now, so it'll be the easiest for me to talk about.

i know that this isn't the best platform to talk about this on, because so many people here are queer, but i've seen too much blatant homophobia surrounding will/byler from stranger things, and i'm fucking sick of it. so i'm writing this.

so the biggest question i've seen recently amidst all the byler stuff (that was also a big thing when season three came out, and robin had her coming-out scene with steve) is why did the show need gay characters? it was fine, why did they need to make it all "woke"?

growing up queer is fucking hard. i'm incredibly lucky to have been surrounded by supportive parents and friends, but so many people do not have that resource. there are so many queer kids out there who don't have anyone around them that's accepting, and seeing a queer character in their favorite show can COMPLETELY change their perspective. hell, i'm in a good situation in terms of my sexuality and the people around me, and yet seeing well-represented queer characters in movies and tv is still so huge to me, because i’ve struggled with accepting my identity for so long.

will byers as a character is so incredibly important to me because he is so much like me. i've been in (and in some aspects still am in) a lot of the same situations that he has, in terms of relationships and friend groups and growing up. that scene in season three, where he gets upset about mike and lucas not wanting to play d&d, and after arguing with mike (it's not my fault you don't like girls), he goes to destroy castle byers? that's one of the only times i've ever cried watching a tv show, because i've been there, and i still am there. growing up queer is fucking isolating. even with other gay friends, our experiences are nowhere near the same, and it doesn't make it any easier to see everyone else around you growing up and getting into straight relationships so easily when you're sitting there panicked about whether that one girl you like would be weirded out by you liking her, because what if she's straight and suddenly your whole friendship is ruined.

as a young queer person, good representation is so important to me. i’ve been queerbaited too many times because i just wanted to be seen (i’m looking at you voltron), because i wanted to be reassured that my future wasn’t hopeless solely because i was a girl who liked girls- and again, im in a good environment for queerness. i live somewhere where i could hold a girls hand in public with only a few odd looks, my friends and immediate family are supportive, and everyone around me is aware of my identity- so think about all the people who don’t have everything that i’m so lucky to have. so many queer kids grow up in places where they can’t be open about their sexuality or gender, where there’s no one like them for miles.

being able to see queer people in good, healthy relationships is life changing to queer kids who grow up feeling isolated and alone because of who they are.

specifically about stranger things, as well: it’s not a show like heartstopper, where you’re guaranteed to get queer characters because that’s what the show is about. stranger things isn’t about romance, queer or straight- it’s about kids fighting monsters from another dimension. making a main character canonically gay is fucking HUGE, because it solidifies queerness as something that doesn’t need to be advertised as the driving point behind a show, making it different than any other old romance show. they’re fighting monsters, and hey- that one kid with the dorky haircut happens to be gay!

it would be a huge win for our community. so. what are we not going to do? we’re NOT going to act like queer characters are only added so that a show can seem ‘woke’, because queer people are NOT a tool to ‘win you points with the liberals’. we are here, existing, just like everyone else.

we deserve to be able to see ourselves in the media we consume.

The sailor moon on your tv as a kid had all the gay erased and told you they were cousins. With the right kind of japanese dub thats faithful to the original you get playful flirty quips and uncensored lesbian romance.

Thats right our man Sinjir is one of the main characters of this book and taking us on a gay journey through space while a bunch of assholes lose their shit about it.

Admittedly it takes until about book two to get to the level of gay you crave. But with the introduction of Conder we've got full on gay romance, gay tension, gay pinning, in star wars.

Now this is the first thing I've pointed you towards that isn't free, here's how youre gonna make it cheaper.

Check your local library. Maybe it's free for you. Who knows. Sit in barnes and noble and read it in it's entirety. What are they gonna do kick you out?(maybe)

If all else fails check your email and see if google play sent you five bucks off a book, which they do sometimes.(use the email search bar)

Another gay star wars book, sortof, From a Certain Point of View

From a Certain Point of View is a collection of 40 starwars related short storys and we care about exactly one of them.

MSE-6 and Men by Glen Weldon is a short story about a mouse droid capturing the love affair of a stormtrooper and an imperial officer.

It's cute, it's short, and near as I can tell it's the only star wars story that's sole focus is gay romance.

Now I probably wouldn't buy the whole book, for this one you've seriously just gotta head into a book store and read the part you're interested in.(not to say the book isn't good but alas the other 39 aren't gay related)

The Kotor series

A series of videogames taking place in the extended universe it's got space combat, space romance, and writing so sharp it could kill a man.

Kotor is a game series riddled with gay romance, but for this one you'll have to look up whichever one you're interested in and see what your gay romance options are. There are sooooo many choices. I actually can't list them all. Seriously look them up. In a world where you get maybe one token character on the side, here you'll have more gays then you can romance.

Well you knew it was coming. Honestly shocked I managed to hold it back this long. So with all the casualness someone can recommend a webcomic longer than war and peace, let me tell you about Homestuck

It's beautiful guys. It's just literary perfection. I love everything about it. It's hilarious. It definitely understands life better than I do. The characters bounce off eachother and you can actually see the way they make a dent in eachothers live. The interests they have they actually geniunely have those interests. I'm almost positive hussie actually has all of the hobbies he's given his characters. It's just shockingly well written. And I recommend it more than anything else on this list.

Not to mention it's gay. It's so gay. Every grey character in the picture above is a gay space alien. And thats just the people I can show you.(tumblr says im at my photo limit)

It's literally a race of pansexual polyamorous space aliens. Seriously find me something gayer than that. You can't.

Well I'll admit this is sortof for the voltron fandom. They definitely seem to be having a rough time of it. And recommending steven universe a million times doesn't really do them justice.(but if you haven't gotten a steven universe recommend yet it is also well worth your time) And if anyone knows of any others I'm very interested and I'll add them to this list.

Y'know, you're making me actually wanna give watching Voltron a try 'cause you're posting caps of all these neat aliens n shit that I've never really seen because 99.99% of the fandom stuff that's come my way is just the human main characters and discourse about who should/shouldn't be shipped bc it's problematic, etc etc

Im actually a little disappointed... especially with the episode im on now showing the former paladins being these cool aliens. And now we just got normal humans... even Keith is part purple kitty but he just looks like a normal human.

Regardless the show is pretty neat. The main cast despite being SO BORING LOOKING IN COMPARISON!!!!! are pretty lovable. Even Lance sometimes (although hes still my least favorite).

tbh I find it interesting how different people interpret the 'you're like a brother to me' line? like to some people, it's just a declaration of how much Shiro means to him, while others see it as a hurdle Keith needs to overcome to recognise his romantic feelings. and then there's those who think it sinks sh3ith entirely. what's ur take on the scene?

ha i feel like ive talked about this so much it would be hard to word it better than i already have, but ill try! 

ok so. thing is, this isn’t the only reference to family we see. keith says they’re all made of the same cosmic star stuff, that they’re “all related.” in episode 2 hunk claims the paladins are all “brothers” and allura tells keith she comes to think of voltron as her new family. so first off, i dont think the brother line automatically disqualifies it as a ship (as you wouldn’t be able to pair up any of the paladins or allura with each other if that was the case). i also think its important to note that while fake shiro keeps pressing this idea that all of team voltron is a family, keith’s focus is entirely on shiro. ive seen plenty of people put lance into this scene, so theres also the fact that, however you feel about the brother line or shiro and keith aside, lots of people can still interpret the situation itself–someone dying on the floor suddenly seeing their greatest hopes and dreams manifest in the form of someone they desperately want to see, someone whom they can’t bear to be abandoned by–as romantic. and again, whether you think its platonic or romantic, bom makes it clear keith still loves shiro.

but real quick, here’s something about it i wrote in one of my other meta, which i think kinda explains it better:

the thing is, shiro is the one who mentions family first. he tells keith “we’re your family” and we get the brother line in response to it. But, shiro said “we.” as in, all the paladins. and we know keith thinks of them all as a family, know that he said “we’re all related” at the end of the olkari episode. (hunk also says all the paladins are brothers, and later allura mentions them all being a family. team voltron is pretty Big on family.) So he could have definitely said, yeah, we’re all a family. But no, he puts all the focus on shiro, and goes “ you‘re like a brother to me.” That one exchange shows keith thinks of his relationship with shiro as being on a whole other level from the rest of team voltron—all of whom he’s already expressed a platonic, familial kind of love for.

Yes, he’s known shiro much longer, but i also think whatever happened back at the garrison, he managed to really click with shiro in a way that’s never quite happened before. Without their backstory, it’s kind of hard to tell. But shiro  must have made one hell of an impression on keith if he ended up being the only one this poor guy opened up to prekerberos. I mean, kollivan tells shiro that keith is desperate to have him at his side. I don’t typically see This Person “desperately wants to see you” used to describe siblings, that definitely has more of an unrequited love vibe to me. If it was strictly familial, i feel like they would have used a term that implies a More Mutual, healthy relationship rather than having this connotation of the person being in agony over their desire.

also, one of keith’s worst fears is apparently confronting his own feelings, something evidenced time and again by how he pushes others away and isolates himself during the whole galra thing

and after how much he’s been hurt and left behind over the years, i think its easy to understand why keith would be so guarded about what he feels and who he strays too close to. If at this point he has romantic feelings for anyone, i think he needs to sort out his fears of abandonment and intimacy first before he even dares to consider being vocal about those feelings. because the way he is now? he’s going to stay silent and just keep throwing up walls to protect himself. 

going back to the brother line in particular, im bi. and i can honestly tell you that saying “youre like a brother/sister to me” when youre scared of how someone of the same gender would react to feeling anything deeper is something people actually do. its a way to kind of backpedal out of the situation and avoid being hurt. its something ive done. so i can see keith throwing it out there as a kind of “safe” way to express how much shiro means to him without being worried that shiro won’t reciprocate his feelings or worse, risk irreparably damaging their friendship over it. especially since his goal here is to try and make shiro stop walking away, to do anything to make him stay. 

i mean honestly everything at this point is still up for interpretation, but thats just how i see it. also, if the staff was so deadset on shiro and keith being brotherly, i dont think they’d support sheith anywhere near as much as they do
